Well here it is Easter Sunday 2023, and I am at home, working on this glorious issue of BodyScape Magazine! Why is it glorious? Because I know for a fact that God has had his hands on this journey of mine since the beginning. He already knew everything you see and read on these pages was going to happen. Therefore, it is glorious.

I think the part that brings the most humility to me is that I publish this amazing magazine, and this is the 25th issue. 25 issues is a big deal, especially for someone with no formal education in publishing, or even photography for that matter! I never knew how this magazine would grow when I started it five years ago, but boy has it ever…

A couple of years ago, it was suggested that I should be on my own cover. At first the idea sounded foreign to me, but then I thought about it from a business standpoint. I do have experience in front of the camera, and I am basically my own client when it comes to photo shoots. So not only did I take that suggestion, but I also decided to REALLY run with it, and dive into the wonderful experience that I have been creating for my own clients for years. I became my own Epic Destination Shoot client. And it was amazing.

Who would capture me, at the highest level? None other than my buddy and mentor Jarmo. I can’t say enough great things about working with a professional of his caliber. He gave me exactly what I was looking for in my images. I wanted to show the world what it is like to be PHOTOGRAPHED, not to just be the photographer! This up-levels my game and skillset as a photographer, to provide even more amazing experiences for my clients, and I am so happy I can call on Jarmo for expert level advice.

Maybe a few of you recall when I was a fitness model. I decided to go back in time and literally dig up some of my images from the 90’s, and share. Boy were things different back then! Technology has come SUCH a long way and I’m so grateful it has! Some of the shoots in those days were fun, others…I felt just like a number. I was published in lots of mainstream fitness magazines back then because the public liked my “look”. Well, can you imagine if I would’ve had the attention of hair and makeup artists like Lisa Opie, Allison Pynn or Leiah Scheibel back then? That would’ve been a game changer!

Then I got back to it in 2007, and I have shared some of those images too. I was still in good shape and decided to do another shoot just because. I became very inspired by the photographer who took my photos, and I thought hey, I can do that too! Could be fun! I never thought that picking up a camera shortly after that shoot would lead me to where I am today publishing two magazines and doing super high-end photo shoots for the clients that trust me with their brand and image.

Celebrating our 25th Issue in Style!

As I sit down to write this editor’s letter I can’t help but think about the amazing things that have happened over the past few years in my life. Not only did I leave a job that was draining me mentally and physically to focus full-time on my own entrepreneurial goals, but I’ve had the chance to work with Sarah Lyons Glabman on her TWO fabulous titles: BodyScape Magazine and EPIC Fit Magazine

I am honored to watch closely as Sarah spreads her wings as a true BOSS BABE. She has turned her dreams into a reality by launching two publications dedicated to health, beauty, fitness and self-confidence through photography that bring light and love to everyone involved.

Sarah has a knack for finding the spark in everyone she photographs and works alongside on the glam side. Over the past few years, I have seen Sarah grow into the business woman she is today. From a one-woman-show to hiring Raj to design and me to help write each issue, I think we’ve made a pretty good team to date. All thanks to the Woman of the Year, Sarah.

On that note, I can’t wait for you to read my cover story on the one and only publisher of this very magazine. Not only is she talented, but she’s kind, compassionate and caring. I even remember a few times I’ve had to personally lean on her as a friend. Yes, Sarah’s that type of person. She will stop everything on her plate to help you get through the tough moments in life. She’s a life saver on set and off!

So, with that being said, I’d like to introduce our 25th

HOW MY FITNESS MODELING CAREER STARTED…

When I look back now it all seems like a dream…. After a spur of the moment decision to enter a Hawaiian Tropic bikini contest in my hometown Seattle—I couldn’t believe I actually won! The organization ended up flying me to Hawaii as a contestant in the Hawaiian Tropic Nationals. With the Miss Hawaiian Tropic title for Washington stat under my belt, I was excited but also a little nervous at what this all meant.

In Hawaii, I met a ton of amazing people including my (now) close friend and our inaugural BodyScape Magazine cover model Jennifer England! I ended up placing in the Top 12 among over 100 contestants from all over the U.S. But it wasn’t sexy curves that garnered the attention of modeling scouts there, it was my fit physique. I guess you could say that I’ve always had a solid, muscular physique, which is what ultimately attracted the best fitness and bikini photographers back in the day. This is how I landed my first photo shoots in some of the top fitness magazines in the world as a model.

13

Over the years, I built my modeling portfolio one shoot at a time—and I was lucky to book several shoots from 1997-1999. During this time, I learned a lot from modeling and on sets, including what magazines were looking for to publish. So, I pushed through the grueling schedules and stuck to my diet to constantly shoot—good, bad, and indifferent. Along with these photo shoots and the attention they were getting from the magazines, I ended up getting attention from other outlets like the WWE, modeling agencies, etc. In fact, I was just on the threshold of getting more exposure, but at the time, I was in a very emotionally abusive relationship. The more I was getting published, the more possessive my then boyfriend was over me.

Unfortunately, he didn’t respect my modeling aspirations and I was looked at just as his object. This made me insecure enough at the time that I believed my worth was wrapped up solely in my appearance. It was all about keeping my body fat super low, staying skinny lean year round, and if I didn’t, that he threatened to leave me. My ex loved the bragging rights of having a published fitness model as his trophy.

14
15

If I had the common sense or loved myself enough at the time to get out of the relationship sooner, I know I could’ve landed so many more opportunities. I even showed up to do a cover shoot with a very popular male fitness model that was guaranteed to be a cover for MuscleMag International! However, the person I was in the relationship with got super jealous of the model and he told me on set (in a rage!) that we were leaving right then!! I was devastated. I’d never been so embarrassed in my entire life. However, in 2001, I finally mustered enough courage to leave the relationship after feeling trapped for nearly 8 years.

As you can imagine, looking back at some of these images from my fitness days is bittersweet. I didn’t know it then because I was young, but my experience in front of the camera would not only coin me as one of the more popular fitness models of that era, but it would become the basis of my evolved modeling career and now publisher of two amazing fitness magazines! All of these experiences have also helped me build my elite business model that I continue to polish every day. So, at the end of the day, my message to all the young girls out there—don’t ever give up hope or let someone else’s pressure on you to be something you’re not be what drives your dreams. Be your own person and you WILL thrive!

BOSS LADY Our ßeautiful

INTRODUCING OUR AMAZING PUBLISHER AND LEAD PHOTOGRAPHER SARAH LYONS GLABMAN: THE TALENTED WOMAN BEHIND THE LENS.

All photos in this article by Jarmo

In honor of our 25th issue of Bodyscape Magazine, I’d like to take a moment and pay homage to the beautiful person who made it all happen. As your editor-in-chief, I can honestly say that there isn’t a better time to showcase how authentic and accomplished Sarah Lyons Glabman is as an entrepreneur, fitness creative, and more importantly, devoted wife and friend. With that being said, I really hope you enjoy this issue dedicated to Sarah’s life, business and aspirations.

Sarah Lyons Glabman is the official lead photographer, publisher and owner of BodyScape Magazine, and its sister publication Epic Fit Magazine. She’s also the amazing woman who brought me on to oversee the editorial side of her publications. And, I couldn’t be more excited to work with Sarah to create these two wonderful publications for readers all over the world.

In fact, being a part of Sarah’s magazine journey has also been life-changing for me. Not only has she given me the responsibility to interview all of our cover models each issue, which has enabled me to meet the most fascinating people all around the globe, but she’s also become a close friend along the way. So, when I found out that Sarah was going to be on the cover of our 25th BodyScape Magazine, I was ecstatic to say the least. All I can say is that it’s about time we recognized this powerhouse by showing her some love for all that’s she’s accomplished over the last few years.

Passionate Powerhouse

For those who have had the pleasure of meeting Sarah in person, I’m sure you agree that she’s a total badass. No matter where you live or what circumstance you’re going through, you can bet she’ll be there for you. As a result, you are instantly drawn to her and admire her talent and her heart. Sarah Lyons Glabman is just one of those people who always lifts you up no matter what.

Sarah’s commitment to her home, work and faith is what makes everything come together. And what comes out of her vision every time she steps on set is nothing short of magical. Balance is key, but her priorities in life are what sets her apart and empowers her to get all that needs to be done on the day-to-day.

Sarah is a survivor in the game of life, an amazing friend, mentor and phenomenal, self-made business owner. Her personality is electric and her photography is bar none. But, more than anything, Sarah’s commitment to her faith and to her husband overrides it all. Without her faith and her husband she wouldn’t be where she is today.

22

The Love Of Her Life

At home Sarah is a dedicated wife to the love of her life, Barry, and mom to her two fur babies: Wrigley her dog and Lilly her cat. No one on this earth loves Barry more than she does— and the feeling is very mutual. Barry supports Sarah in everything she does and that has made a world of difference in launching her business and pursuing her dreams. No matter how outlandish her ideas may seem at first, Barry is always there to support her 100 percent.

From important business and marketing decisions to travel plans, photography selections, professional development courses and so on— Sarah leans on Barry for love and guidance. There’s absolutely no mountain too high for Sarah to climb with Barry by her side.

23
“I AM SO GRATEFUL TO HAVE MARRIED BARRY. HE IS A WONDERFUL SUPPORT SYSTEM IN BUSINESS AND IN LIFE. HE IS MY HEART AND SOUL. I DON’T KNOW WHERE I WOULD BE WITHOUT HIM.”
24
25

The Sky’s the Limit

Sarah says that one of the biggest blessings is that they got married later in life. As she becomes an even busier and a more extraordinary photographer, Barry and Sarah are both okay having space to do what they want and focus on their projects (one of the luxuries of not having kids). “If I go on a travel shoot, Barry never asks questions. He supports me 100 percent and gets behind all of my ideas. Barry constantly reminds me that he just wants me to HAVE FUN on my shoots. He has always been very supportive of my magazine ideas—and I love that about him.”

Barry has always seen Sarah’s work on a much bigger scale, and this has pushed her to work even harder. “I remember way back when I first had the idea to start a magazine he said to me, ‘Do you know anything about producing a magazine?’ And I didn’t know anything in the beginning but this made me think long and hard about my next ambition. I knew I had it in me to create something really special. I knew deep down that I was tired of waiting to see if my photos would get published in other magazines, so he convinced me that it was time I took things into my own hands. And I’m so glad he did because he encourages me, challenges me and makes me a better version of myself.”

On the flip, Sarah says they like to reward themselves after all their hard work by traveling the world. For instance, last August they went to California for a month where they could unwind and spend quality time together. “We are super busy and work our butts off so we like to treat ourselves. We also carve out time go places with friends and for golf tournaments and the beach. We are both extremely passionate about travel; our first big trip together was to Australia and New Zealand in 2018, which was absolutely amazing!”

26

In 2019, this devoted couple spent their honeymoon on a Mediterranean cruise and travelled to Greece, Israel and Italy for three weeks. Next year they plan to visit Dubai for a few days to acclimate on route to Africa on a 3-week tour on a private jet. “We are both so excited!”

With many similar interests such as travel and the desire to succeed and be happy—it’s no surprise this dynamic duo ended up together. Barry knew about fitness and that it was the main thing that drove Sarah’s ideas—and Barry loved Sarah’s tenacity and passion for life.

“My ideas became wild and crazy when I decided to start a magazine on my own, but he’s my biggest cheerleader. I don’t think I would be able to do this without his emotional and mental support. He was tired of me putting all my talent into one-off projects and hustling to get my work into any magazine. The magazines have now gained so much respect in a short amount time. It’s been a joint effort!”

She’s Also An Award Winner!!!!

Recently, Sarah was honored by Supermodels Unlimited Magazine as their Woman of the Year! Due to her ongoing contributions and amazing photography on Times Square and LA billboards over the past year.

This was a wonderful surprise to Sarah and WELL DESERVED! We are so excited for Sarah and would like to congratulate her on such an amazing accomplishment.

To celebrate this special achievement, Sarah travelled to Miami and hung out with her amazing friends, celebrity stylist Joey Rolon and glam superstar Lisa Opie (Sarah fondly calls these two her “dream team”) as well as many other friends and potential clients. Everyone looked amazing! Sarah says she will never forget this experience— and especially landing the cover of Supermodels Unlimited Magazine as well.

Congratulations! 30

Working with a Creative Genius

With 25 glamorous issues under her belt, and a plethora of praise from industry experts and models alike, Sarah has learned to hone her craft expertly. By the way, did I mention that Sarah has zero formal education in photography? She is a self-taught dynamo and learned a lot from previous shoots she had done when SHE was a fitness model in the past!

In doing so, Sarah knew if she was going to be the best she could be, she’d have to lean on others who paved the way before her. One of those people who became a huge mentor is Jarmo Pohjaniemi, a worldrenowned fashion photographer who has worked with numerous A-list celebrities and high fashion models for top brands and magazines such as Playboy and Maxim. (Note: Since Sarah’s mentorship with Jarmo her work has now been published in Maxim too!)

Sarah has learned a lot from working with world-class photographer Jarmo. A few years ago, she had enough business sense to realize that if she wanted to take her business to the next level, she would need help from a pro. So she decided to attend Jarmo’s esteemed “Shoot the Centerfold” seminar in Miami in 2021 to broaden her technical horizons and become a better marketer and photographer. As soon as she did, her photography skills started to skyrocket even higher.

31
32
33

Sarah has now become close friends with her mentor and he checks on her regularly to make sure she’s staying on track. “He’s really encouraging of my work,” Sarah says. “He says to me, ‘You’re a hard worker. Why are we not seeing your work in international magazines?’ Jarmo gives me great advice and listens to me when I have ideas in mind.” Jarmo’s seminar is a weekend-long practice shoot focusing on various techniques, and how to shoot different people in different lighting and scenarios.

“I wanted to make it known to Jarmo who I was and what I do. With the direction from Barry, it was my mission to make sure that Jarmo knew who I was before leaving Miami. So, when the group of photographers at the seminar decided to go out to lunch on the last day, I followed Jarmo around and made sure I sat RIGHT next to him at lunch. How could I not with all of his amazing knowledge and experience? I was determined to make a permanent connection with him before heading back to Scottsdale the next day!”

Jarmo showed a genuine interest in Sarah’s work and that gave her the confidence to keep going. “He encouraged me to stay in touch with him. I went to his seminar for the learning and education, but took him up on his offer and still today, anytime I have questions I reach out. He said he saw something in me that was way more than I ever see in myself.”

34

Our Jaw-Dropping Cover Photo Shoot

When Sarah decided it was her time to be on the cover, Barry and her both decided that Jarmo should be the one to shoot it. And I’m sure you can agree that this special cover has turned out spectacular! Sarah has done not one, but two shoots with her mentor.

“The first shoot back in January 2022 was pretty bikini forward,” Sarah explains. “But I didn’t want my readers to think that I think that’s who I am. We did a second shoot with my stylist Joey Rolon that was a lot more edgy and classy styling wise— and I love how it turned out. My mission was to implement a lot more style into this shoot to show clients how I could immerse myself into a photo shoot in front of the camera as well. By doing so, I felt more confident that I could sell my services with the experience of knowing what it felt like to be a model.”

Sarah felt like she needed to act as though she was her client—and be the person who walks through the process with her as the model instead of being the photographer. She did this strategically so she could understand her clients better and understand what they wanted and expected on an Epic Destination Shoot. “It’s not all about bikinis! It’s about bringing out your own style that you didn’t know you had in you. It’s a vibe and I wanted that to come across in this shoot too, which I think we achieved.”

According to Sarah, Jarmo is always trying to achieve a goal and expand his horizons. “That’s how I am on my shoots, too. We don’t need to spend hours on end with things don’t mean a lot; Jarmo and I are very, very similar in that regard. I don’t believe in spending too much time with each outfit change. I needed to start working with a higher caliber of models too with similar dedication and focus while shooting with people. As a result, it made perfect sense to invest in his shoot for my own Epic Destination Shoot. Maybe

there will be another one in the future, you never know! After all, I do have some experience in front of the camera, and doing both of these shoots has reminded me how much fun booking a shoot really is. Jarmo’s gorgeous wife Mary Alejo was super helpful with lighting and just being on set with me to help with all the details too. I am thrilled with the outcome.”

A Pro’s Perspective

I know a big part of Sarah’s recent journey as a photographer has been working with Jarmo, so I wanted to get his perspective on the woman of the hour as well. While speaking to him, I learned that he is not only a true professional and expert on the art of photography and visual creation, but he is also a firm believer in anyone who shows a passion for something they love. True dedication.

“When I first met Sarah I did not know she was a photographer. She came to my seminar in Miami and ended up having more photography skills than anyone else in attendance. There were over 40 photographers at this seminar in particular. We kept in touch and the next thing I know I’m photographing her in Miami,” Jarmo says. “One thing that really struck me about Sarah is that she is very passionate about her business. This is someone who has accomplished a lot for being a photographer turned magazine creator. She’s come a long way in a short time.”

Jarmo explained to me that there’s a certain “quality” that he looks for in photographers— and Sarah definitely has it. He looks for people who have something deeper inside than just photographing beautiful women. “Sarah is a beautiful woman who just turned fifty. I was very impressed with her work. She gave me an open hand to mentor her and was open to my advice. I guess I earned her trust and her flowing personality is another plus that is very important especially in photography. She has a certain kindness that she is able to bring to the table every time.”

35
36
37

Originally from Finland, Jarmo is a wealth of knowledge with 40 years of experience. One if his true loves is working with aspiring photographers in the U.S. and abroad. He went on to say that Sarah was someone who definitely stood out as she was “all in” taking notes and paying attention. Asking a lot of questions and paying attention the entire time. He said she had a lot of discipline, determination and willingness to learn.

“When you’re a photographer you are measured by your personality a lot. It’s a really competitive industry. However, Sarah has a great personality that draws you in. I have worked with so many editors and photographers who don’t have a good attitude—and it wasn’t a good experience. On the other hand, Sarah has a lot of success coming to her if she sticks to the formula that we’ve talked about on how to reach her goals and fulfill them. I have faith in her abilities to go all the way.”

A Mentor to Sarah

One of Jarmo’s main pieces of advice to Sarah was that if she wants to succeed further and faster, she has to get published elsewhere. Her clients will appreciate her exposure out there in the industry. “I strongly believe you have to become your own pop star to make it. Your own cheerleader,” he says. “Sometimes I shoot jobs and I don’t care a lot about marketing, but I do know how important it is while you’re building your brand.”

Jarmo worked for Playboy for 15 years. He knows first-hand that you have to “break the rules” to survive in the business sometimes. “For Sarah running a magazine, there is so much other work to be done. The shooting is a small part of the photographer’s life and it’s getting less and less with social media etc. Today, it’s all about the quality and how to differentiate yourself from other publications.”

38

Jarmo told me that he explained the “Secret to Success” to Sarah. “You’re giving girls covers and billboards. What’s next? Next you have to grow and come up with new ideas. Go travel do things internationally. Get published elsewhere. Spread your wings. Get new readers. Work with new people. Keep growing your brand any way you can.” And that’s exactly what Sarah has been doing ever since.

What is an Epic Destination Shoot?

Although Sarah has been a full-time photographer since 2008, she has been doing Epic Destination Shoots officially since 2016. Some of her first Epic Destination shoots were in Lake Tahoe, Malibu, Cabo, Costa Rica and even Toronto. They have become a big part of her successful PictureGroove Photography business.

39

GETTING IN FRONT OF SARAH’S LENS

Sarah is based in Scottsdale, Arizona, which is its OWN Epic Destination, so when she isn’t traveling to Miami, Vegas, or New York, she is always looking for great people to photograph locally. If you think this might be something for you to help build or re-brand your business—or if you’re thinking of updating your portfolio—Sarah is great at orienting you from the initial conversation to shoot day. She also considers where you want to visit (vacation), so she can cater to your individual desires to create a glamorous shoot JUST FOR YOU.

IMPORTANT: The one big thing she wants everyone to remember is that you don’t have to be a model to book an Epic Destination Shoot. “We’re not looking for supermodels. We welcome anyone who wants an unforgettable photo shoot experience at any age or body type.”

Sarah also spends a lot of time getting to know the models before they step in front of her lens. This way she puts people at ease if they are a little nervous about what to expect. A lot of these shoots start with a simple Zoom call to get a vibe for each other, and then Sarah screen shares information so it’s easier to understand the various packages.

“We talk about their goals, objectives, the kind of set up they want, the scene, the business, content creation, and what kind of look they want to achieve. Whether they want to look more business-like, get beautiful beach babe shots, or maybe do a sexy boudoir shoot—it’s all attainable!”

**Please note that Sarah says 2023 will begin the wind-down of her shooting these large, preplanned Epic Destination Shoots—so make sure to book yours ASAP! When she is done doing the travel shoots, all photo shoots will take place in Scottsdale, Arizona, unless a custom travel shoot is planned just for YOU.

The Details Count

No matter where the shoots take place, the location is already included in the base cost of the shoot. If Sarah needs to rent a studio or a special location in Miami, these might be extras depending on the situation. However, consideration of Sarah’s travel budget, cost of lodging and rental of gear etc. are worked into the final amount.

46

Professional Gear – Sarah only uses the highest-quality professional level camera. Her lens and computers are top-notch and are the core of her elite business. All of these are factors that go into the cost of shoots.

Make up – When Sarah looks back on her impressive portfolio as a fitness model (she has graced hundreds of top magazines during her modeling career) she recalls that a lot of the times she didn’t have professional hair, styling or makeup—but she still made it work!

So imagine what you will look like with her amazing glam squad!!

With an Epic Destination Shoot, you will have access to the best glam squad and service providers in the business such as, Lisa Opie (Miami), Leiah Scheibel and Allison Pynn (Arizona), and Esme Tores (Texas), plus many more depending on where you shoot. These experts are all hand-picked by Sarah herself!

Posing – Sarah is an expert posing instructor, and learns more on posing with each of her shoots. Different body types photograph differently. For example, a fitness pose that an athlete may work well might not work for a more voluptuous client. She is multi-talented!
