In 2020, I learned so much. I learned what it really means to be patient. I learned more about being calm. I learned that we can never take things for granted in life. (I already knew that, but to really came to be in 2020.) I’ve learned that there is a force that wants to work against us, and that we always need to have a shield of {spiritual} protection around us. We have God, who will always guide us in the right direction. His unwavering loyalty and guidance for each and every one of His children FAR surpasses anything we would ever here about in mainstream or social media. I mean, how many lies were we told the year? The mystery continues to unravel. But in the midst of this year that has been very “off-centered” to say the least, it seems that the experiences that the BodyScape Magazine team has had have been so much more meaningful. As if we are all working closer, stronger, and with more love behind each and every project we do. Case in point…working with our amazing cover model Kristie Kwan. When I found out that Kristie wanted to do another shoot, Monica and were so excited! Not just for the shoot, but because we got to spend the with her again, and edify the amazing person that she is. Being around Kristie, s a calming experience. She opened her home for us for a SECOND time, and had more amazing snacks laid out from her K2 Ft Smart Snacks line for us to enjoy (AFTER her shoot of course!) What Kristie didn’t realize was that we were staging her shoot for her to be on the cover! It was a very specific strategy that Monica, myself and Kristie’s DARLING husband Aaron had executed seamlessly somehow, without blowing the whistle and telling Kristie. THAT was challenging! Now, here are the rewards of that amazing shoot that Kristie will have for a lifetime. I’m honored to work with her every time, and Im happy to consider her a good friend now too. We also have a new addition to the team that literally just blows my mind. Awhile back, Monica suggested bringing on a REAL writer for the magazine. Up until this issue, I had been writing all of my own interviews and some articles, and that was fine. Enter Kerrie Lee Brown. She is former Editor-in-chief of Oxygen Magazine, (somebody pinch me!) an author of a beautiful book called “My Heart my Self” all about women’s heart health and some personal experiences that she’s had with her heart, she is the founder of Red Lily Life which is not only an amazing heart health supplement line, but also an extensive and beautiful website where she lifts other women up and edifies them. The list of Kerrie’s credentials goes on and on as you will read in her article that’s showcased in this issue, but the most important part about this introduction is that she is now on board as the BodyScape Magazine Celebrity Profile Writer! This means that Kerrie interviews and writes about our cover models. When She sent me the interview she wrote on Kristie, was teary eyed because of how beautifully t was written. You’ll see for yourself! And Monica, you were right all along. Kerrie is a much needed and welcomed talent to have on board wth BodyScape Magazine. We are very fortunate to have you on board, and thank you for being a part of the team Kerrie! Although the world is in a crazy place right now, we must keep on pushing forward. Don’t stop reaching for your goals, and setting new ones! BodyScape Magazine will be here to tell the stories of the amazing people that work wth us. If you’d like info on booking a future shoot with us, send us an email at info@BodyScapeMag.com! 2021 is just around the corner and we are building out our schedule for the year and YES we will be traveling a bit too. Don’t miss out on an amazing chance to do a photo shoot of a lifetime. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and yours!
Sincerely, Sarah Lyons Glabman BodyScape Magazine Lead Photographer and Publisher BodyScapeMag.com

The holiday season is one of the most special times of the year for many of us. For me, it is a time to celebrate life-the birth of my savior, Jesus, and the people I love and cherish. I believe it is the perfect time to honor and edify others with our words, actions, and gifts. This Christmas issue, with our beautiful and super fit wife, mom and entrepreneur, Kristie Kwan, felt like a gift that started giving back in June and has ‘kept on giving’ to all of us involved. It was a joy making (secret) plans with Kristie’s first class husband, Aaron, and Sarah for her so-called ‘normal EPIC photo shoot’ back in July to land Kristie with her very first official magazine cover! This scheming (not always a negative, right?) between Sarah, Aaron and myself started as a small idea between Sarah and me that just felt necessary. We just knew that honoring Kristie with a cover was the right thing to do and secondly, being a Christmas theme was the only way to go. Typical Sarah and I, we are completely involved in the planning and orchestrating of all photo shoot details, from wardrobe to setting up hair and makeup, (thank you to the ever talented HMUA Lizbeth Mejorado for her beautiful work on Kristie!) to location and posing. From the beginning of our covert communication to the actual day when we finally broke down and told Kristie of her upcoming COVER, has been an EPIC-Cheers to our beautiful friend and cover model, Kristie Kwan! It seems like every issue we have something new and exciting happening here at BodyScape Magazine that it important to share with our readers and viewers. This Christmas issue holds true to that with our very first cover model feature interview written by none other than my long time friend, industry powerhouse and BodyScape’s newest team member, the former ‘Editor in Chief’ at Oxygen Magazine, Celebrity Profile writer, Kerrie Lee Brown! Having the expert author/editor Kerrie step in to handle the feature is an extremely rewarding gift to offer our upcoming cover models. Kerrie will be a perfect fit for BodyScape Magazine moving forward and I am so happy that the opportunity to work together again has presented itself. With Christmas right around the corner, it is my prayer that you and your loved ones will remember the REAL REASON for Christmas and celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

It is my job to make sure any woman I train for their respective pageant has “the look” and feels confident come the day of their pageant. In order to do this, I watch the pageants, judge them and read blogs to better understand “the look”. A key factor in competing in pageants is a person’s genetics. The look of a pageant contestant is held by less than 10% of the US population. A woman competing in a pageant will have a body fat percentage between 12-16 % (on average) and will be at a weight under 130 pounds (again on average). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention the average woman over the age of 20 is now 168.5 pounds with a body fat percentage over 24%. Note that your genes play in to about 30% of how you look. Other factors are your behavior/environment 25% and your nutrition/ exercise 35%. Genetics will be defined as the characteristics and features you got from good ol mom and dad. The color of your skin, eyes, hair, shape of your body, height, teeth, etc… While you can change your eye color with contacts, your hair with dying it, your teeth with braces and your shape to some degree with diet and exercise.
Scott Keppel Scott’s Training Systems
Something to keep in mind with regards to shape if we look at the 3 major types (mesomorph “apple”, endomorph “pear” and ectomorph “banana”) you can not change your bone structure to make yourself an apple from a banana and so on. You can definitely shape what you have and make some changes, but at the end of the day you’ll be a modified version of your body type, but not different type all together. Some women will carry more muscle than others and have a “harder” look. These women will often be the ones that compete in bikini, figure, fitness and/or physique competitions. These women also come in leaner than a pageant contestant and overall have more lean mass, thus weighing more too.
How many of you grew up watching Miss USA and/or Miss America? How many of you admired their beauty, poise and Behavior will be defined as how one acts. For environment we will refer to as the overall appearance? surroundings and/or conditions in which I have been the official fitness and nutrition coach for Miss Arizona USA since 2008. In addition, I am the official coach for we live. Miss Utah USA, Miss Arizona, and I am also the preferred coach for Future Productions (Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Wisconsin) and the Pageant Planet.com.
First, behavior. This is important, because if we have been taught to reward and/or punish ourselves with food,
15
it will be a difficult road for those looking to compete in a pageant as they must make healthier choices more often than not, and they need to be mindful of what they are eating and/or drinking at all times! A pageant contestant must look the part at all times if she wants to have modeling opportunities, media appearances and/or compete. If she’s over eating, eating foods that don’t cooperate with her body (cause bloat, gas, water retention, etc…) she will not look or feel her best and in turn may not win her pageant and/ or “get the gig”. On the flip side, if a woman feels it’s best to starve themselves to look like a pageant contestant in addition to looking emaciated, being weak and her skin looking as though it sags she can develop long term side effects (slowed down metabolism, thyroid issues, diarrhea, nausea, osteoporosis and more). It’s too difficult to tell you exactly how much you should eat without knowing you, but as a rule of thumb I feel no woman should be under 1200 calories (unless medically supervised), protein should be approximately .06-.08 grams per pound you weigh, carbs 1-1.12 grams per pound and fats under 50 grams.
Environment is important, because if a woman
has “good” genetics, her behavior is “good” but if she does not have the money and/or means to eat healthy and/or exercise she will not achieve her full potential. If she is in an abusive and/or non supporting environment, she will struggle more and may not achieve her best. Setting yourself up to succeed is crucial. Surround yourself with positive people, healthy individuals and if able, hire a coach for at least a few sessions to help educate you on what exercises and nutrition would be the best for you.
Nutrition is the process of providing your body with the necessary nutrients and calories for optimal health. This varies for everyone (as stated earlier), but is a huge factor in a women competing in a pageant.
16
Knowing that your body fat needs to be under 16% and an ideal body fat percentage rage is 18-24% you will need to be on point with your nutrition as it will want to go to the ideal range. This ideal range is great for most of the population, again most women are above 26% with over 40% of our population being above 36% if you’re looking to compete in a pageant (not just do one) you must get lean. Getting lean does not mean cutting out all foods with the exception of 3 or 4 items. What it does mean, is tracking what you’re eating and noting how the food you eat makes you feel, look and what your measurements are. If you want to get leaner, you’re going to have to cut out “junk” and stick to more nutritious foods. In addition to nutrition you will need to exercise.
Weight training/resistance training is ideal for shaping the muscles you have and building lean muscle. Note, 1 pound of muscle is 3 times smaller than a pound of fat, and burns up to 4 times more calories per day. Lifting will not make you big! You need to lift a lot and eat a lot for this to even possibly come true. I suggest most women looking for the pageant look to lift 3 times a week with one day being a leg day, one back and arms and the last glutes and shoulders. Yoga and pilates are ideal for flexibility, mindfulness, elongating muscles and stability. I feel you should do one of these or a combo of 1-2 times a week. Cardio/Aerobic training-great for burning more calories and getting your heart rate up. Often times a woman competing in a pageant does not have a lot of muscle mass, does not eat a lot and does hours of cardio. This equates to an emaciated look which is not good. I suggest no less than 20 minutes per session and no more than 45 for 4-5 sessions a week. I also like HIIT (high intensity interval training) for at least half the sessions.
Exercise is defined as an activity that require physical effort. For some this may be lifting weights, others yoga, cardio, pilates, boxing and so on. Much like nutrition, it is too difficult to tell you how much of each you should do without knowing what you look like and your goals, but here are some bullet points to take into If you would like more information on Scott’s training systems, consideration when determining which form of exercise is best: visit his website at www.scottstrainingsystems.com

Hello BodyScape Magazine readers! I thought I’d take this opportunity to introduce myself because you will start to see my name in each issue now that I am the new Celebrity Profile Writer for BodyScape Magazine. I may also be assigned to interview some of you about your beautiful photo shoots in the near future! Stay tuned for more. A little bit about me: I am a proud mom of two boys with a long history in fitness journalism. Like most moms, my life revolves around my kids’ sports. My youngest Brock (11) plays the highest level of hockey in Colorado—and my eldest Connor (16) is a nationally-ranked motocross rider who is on his way to Pro status. Needless to say, we are always running them around to their activities—and when I’m not working we like to travel up to Canada to visit family. The gym is my safe haven where I can put on my earphones and let the music and exercises take me away. Professionally, I am a seasoned magazine editor turned women’s wellness author, advocate, and entrepreneur. From running various fitness magazines (most notably as the editor-in-chief of Oxygen Women’s Fitness, founding editor of American Health & Fitness, and executive editor of Today’s Parent magazine) to mentoring aspiring writers, editors, and creative teams as the current executive editor of Denver Life Magazine—all of my media roles have shaped me into the business leader that I am today. As a professional journalist, I love being a voice for those who may not have one. In fact, I’ve always tried hard to make a difference in some way—mostly by sharing people’s heartfelt stories and bringing awareness to different causes and their businesses. I will be forever grateful for my time spent in the media industry because it has allowed me to grow, survive, and thrive. I also learned to never give up. As someone who is obsessed with storytelling, I have continued to freelance and write articles for over 150 magazines worldwide in the areas of health, fitness, sport conditioning, nutrition, beauty, fashion, motivation, mind-body, supplementation, and celebrity profiles. I’ve also appeared on numerous television and radio shows including: E!, EXTRA, The Montel Williams Show, The Social, Breakfast Television, The Marilyn Dennis Show, among others. After my husband and I made the big decision to move from Toronto, Canada to Denver, Colorado in 2014 to pursue our business aspirations, I became the co-owner of Action Brands LLC where I still offer creative content and editing solutions to executives and VIP clients. I also teach women about the importance of self-care and listening to their bodies after a heart-health scare at the age of 39. In 2013, I had surgery to fix an electrical issue in my heart. I also found out that I had been living with a congenital heart condition, which was a huge wake-up call. So, I decided to make myself a priority and implement self-care into my life. As a result, I wrote and self-published a memoir called “My Heart, My Self – A Heartfelt Guide for Women Who Do Too Much” (available on Amazon) to help educate others about heart health. My book also includes “10 Signs You Need to Slow Down” and practical tips for women at any age. I realize now that my health scare was meant to help me dig deeper on a personal and professional level. That’s why today I want to continue to make an even bigger impact. I wrote my book because I truly felt my story would help people. That is still my mission today. Having a heart attack at age 39 at the height of my media career was shocking to say the least. I was seemingly healthy, not obese, no history of heart disease in my immediate family, exercised regularly, and watched what I ate. And, like I said, I was the editor of Oxygen for many years, so I thought I knew a thing or two about the symptoms to watch out for. But I ignored them as so many women do. I soon learned that no one is exempt from heart health issues and that’s why I am determined to educate women on slowing down and making themselves a priority. The purpose of my book is two-fold: Writing it helped me get through my own physical and emotional scars…and…I wanted to help others understand that if it can happen to me, it can happen to you. You can find “My Heart, My Self – A Heartfelt Guide for Women Who Do Too Much” on Amazon everywhere. I hope you’ll pick it up! Besides now writing for BodyScape Magazine, I also recently evolved my heart brand into an exciting new digital storytelling platform called RedLilyLife.com. My goal is to help women of all ages and life stages tell their stories in ways the industry has never seen before. I also launched RedLily® Wellness which incorporates all-natural, vegan friendly wellness products into your life. I have many more plans to come too, just wait and see! Sign up for my newsletter for all the updates and what’s new from RedLily® women’s lifestyle brand. To end, I truly think my journey to success is still evolving. I have taken risks in the past and plan to take even more risks in the future. I believe risk-taking can help you grow and gain more clarity about who you really are. Our move to Colorado made us all stop and think about what we wanted out of life. You learn to adapt to new environments and new people, and grow in ways you never thought possible. That’s the whole point of taking chances. I look forward to interviewing many of you over the coming months—and learning as much from you as I hope you learn from me. How to take your look from day to GLAM! By Allison Pynn MAKEUP * HAIR STYLING * BODYPAINTING |
www.makeupaz.com
Sarah and I have a “Glam Language.” When we first started shooting together over 10 years ago, we developed our language and it went like this: “Should we start at a 5?” “Ok, now let’s do a 9.5.” I glam on a scale from 1-10 going from a natural look to mega-watt epic (smoky eyes, big hair, big lashes etc). Over the years, we’ve started cutting out the “natural looks” and now START at a 10 because we’re going for IMPACT! And if Picturegroove is known for anything, its creating images with some serious IMPACT! As fun as it is to rock some mega-watt glam, in the real world, you’re probably wearing more of a natural look during the day. I’d like to show you how to take your look from day to PICTUREGROOVE GLAM! Your daytime face — I’m assuming you’ve got the usual on: light foundation, maybe some blush, mascara, etc. From here, the easiest way to amp up your eyes is to use cream eyeshadows. It may sound messy, but trust me, its the easiest way to get the most impact because the colors are usually so pigmented and intense. I recommend cream shadows in stick form because they’re also the easiest to maneuver. For the easiest smoky eye look use just two colors of cream eyeshadow: a light shimmer tone and a tone 3 to 4 shades darker. Start with your lighter eyeshadow and apply it to your lid. Since you’re using a cream, you can use your finger and gently buff it around the lid. Next, place the darker shadow at the outer corner of your eye and swipe it along the crease of your eye. Now run this same color along the entire lower lash line. If you have a synthetic eyeshadow blending brush, use this to blend out the shadow in the crease. To make it easy, place the brush in the crease and make halfmoon shapes moving the brush back and forth until the shadow looks soft and blended.
Tip: If you don’t have a synthetic brush you can use your ring finger to gently soften the edges of the shadow and blend.
Now using your finger, gently run it along your lower lashline to smudge out the shadow. Next, take a deep black eyeliner and line the upper and lower inner rim of your eyes. This will give you a SERIOUS pop to your eye color. Take that same liner and run it along your upper lashline, starting at the outer corner all the way to your inner corner. Don’t worry if it’s not a perfectly straight line, you can use your finger to smudge and soften the line (gives you more of a smoky effect). Next, curl your lashes and apply two thick coats of mascara. If you’re a lash master and can apply falsies this is the time to go for it! Tip: If you already have mascara on from the day, be very gentle when curling your lashes. Just give them a light squeeze. Now time to give your skin a glow! Use any liquid or power highlighter and run it along your cheekbones, down the bridge of your nose and pop a bit on the center of your chin too. Tip: a highlighter will give your skin a luminous glow in person and will photograph beautifully. Touch up your cheeks with a pop of a pinky or peachy toned blush. Apply a bit of bronzer along your hairline and under your highlighter as well. This will give your face more dimension. Last, swipe on a nude gloss or lipstick (either with pink or peach undertones (try to coordinate this with your blush color). If you have pink blush, choose a pinky toned lip color). Voila! You just nailed the EASIEST way to get that megawatt PICTUREGROOVE GLAM! Let me know how you did! Did you nail it or still need help? I’d love to give you more tips or answer any of your questions. Message me on Instagram and be sure to include a picture of your Picturegroove Glam for a chance to be featured on mine and Bodyscape Magazine’s Instagram! Can’t wait to see your pics! @AllisonPynn

Celebrity Profile Interview – Kristie Kwan BodyScape Magazine
Faith, Fitness & Family With a degree in speech pathology and a passion for health, wellness, and nutrition—cover model Kristie Kwan is the saving grace in her own story and the light in which inspires others.
By Kerrie Lee Brown BodyScape Magazine Celebrity Profile Writer There are certain times in one’s life where an event or a person changes you forever. A chance meeting. A surprise phone call. A heartfelt conversation. For me, as someone who believes wholeheartedly that everyone has an important message to share, interviewing this month’s cover model was a fortunate stroke of serendipity. There’s no doubt Kristie Kwan’s beauty and physicality exudes off these pages, but learning about what she has on the horizon truly speaks volumes as to who she is as a mom, wife, and entrepreneur. There’s no doubt she is living her truth and with that comes undeniable gratitude for her faith and support system at home for all of the good graces and blessings she has endured. A genuine, kind, intelligent woman who loves her family and friends, Kristie Kwan has much more than cover-worthy looks—she’s got a positive attitude about life and a passion for helping her clients lead healthier, more manageable lives. Kristie is a beautiful soul inside and out. Despite not being able to find the right words to explain how much she loves exercise, she prides herself on her natural ability to develop recipes and her determination to create a thriving business. As a revered Personal Trainer and Nutrition Specialist, Kristie loves the rush of endorphins when she works out—even on those days when she doesn’t feel motivated. But this only further illustrates her authenticity and drive to push forward. Kristie is diligent about helping others with their fitness aspirations no matter what age or life stage. From 17 to 60, her clients are a huge reason why she does what she does. It is her personal mission to help them succeed and achieve better health—just as much as she wants to reach her own health and fitness goals. Kristie admits it’s exciting to change a person’s life. Whether she’s working with clients one-on-one or educating her beautiful children about the importance of self-care and wellness—she knows it’s her destiny to challenge herself and others every day through the grace of God. Not to mention, her loving husband Aaron has been by her side the entire way. They met in sophomore year, graduated, married, and started a family. But her fairy-tale didn’t end there. Today her aspirations to make an impact continue to evolve. Hence, her curiosity about where she wants to take her love of exercise, food, and recipes is just the beginning. In her own words, “there’s purpose in the way things happen” … and we couldn’t agree more.
I knew that I always loved fitness—I just didn’t realize it’s what I wanted to do. That’s why I can’t believe this is all happening. The people God has brought into my life is incredible. It’s all about divine timing; meeting Sarah and Monica, and now you Kerrie… it’s all too surreal.

Tell us about yourself. “I am 43 years old and live in Cedar Park, TX just north of Austin. I was born and raised in Odessa, TX until I was 13 and then my family moved to Waco, where I finished up my education and I met Aaron. My husband and I are college sweethearts from Baylor University and just celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary this past March. We have 15-year-old boy/girl twins that are sophomores in high school and an 11-year-old son who is beginning the journey of middle school. All of our kids are quite active so it keeps us on our toes year round. Our oldest son plays football in the fall, varsity lacrosse in the spring, as well as travel club lacrosse. Our daughter plays high school volleyball and is a lover of all things music, playing the piano, guitar, bass, and now learning the electric guitar. Our youngest is involved in golf, lacrosse, and water polo. So, there is never a dull moment in our household!
43
How did you begin your fitness journey? “I began my fitness and nutrition journey at 15 years old, when I was introduced to my high school weight room for track. Fast forward 25 years, marriage, and being a stay-at-home mom, I began reaching out to various people that I knew in the fitness industry. I eventually earned the original certifications I set out to get, right around my 40th birthday. And, continue today with certifications in additional areas revolving around health, fitness, and nutrition—and how everything we put in our body will have some sort of positive and negative effect. Seven months after I turned 40, I competed in an event in Austin called the Texas Shredder. I competed against women of all ages. It was an incredible amount of work but I actually won! I learned a lot during that process. It was after the competition that I decided that I was going to pursue my passion with a different angle. I believe I found my calling after my experience with the competition by training and watching what people go through emotionally in order to transform their lives physically. I believe my calling is specifically to help women. I want to walk alongside their weight training and nutrition journey. I want to encourage, edify, and educate.”
What makes you get up in the morning? “Above everything else, I am most passionate about my faith. Beyond my faith is my family. And of course, I love fitness. I love creating and working toward personal goals. I’m excited and grateful to wake up every morning to do life. My relationships are what get me up in the morning—my family, friends, and clients. I also LOVE creating workout routines that include strength training as well as cardio, balance, and flexibility exercises. And I love, love, love inventing, recreating, and sharing healthy protein packed macro balanced snacks; which I refer to as Smart Snacks.”
These photos making it into BodyScape Magazine was the sweetest surprise. And to make the cover is beyond anything expected. My cup is completely running over with gratitude. Especially to be featured in the Holiday edition... It is simply the most wonderful time of the year and my absolute favorite.

What are your aspirations in life? Have you had to overcome any obstacles? “I don’t believe I was created to change the world. There are plenty of fitness trainers, plenty of dieticians and nutritionists, and plenty of heath coaches out there already. Rather, I believe I was called to walk alongside a few—to cheer and help keep those few accountable to their personal goals revolving around fitness. I have a vision and aspirations [for my business] K2 Fit SmartSnacks to be a one-stop-shop to help people become mindful, organized, and equipped with creating individualized fit lifestyles. No gimmicks, no quick fads, just organic sustainable fitness and food routines for a healthy life. In regard to overcoming obstacles in my life, [to be honest] I feel like I’ve just had to overcome myself. My own inner struggles of self-doubt, insecurities of failure, the struggle of stepping out of my comfort zone are what I’ve had to deal with over the years. As a result, I practice praying and meditating on truth to combat the difficult times.”
What made you decide to shoot for BodyScape Magazine? “Originally, I didn’t realize I was shooting for BodyScape Magazine. I really wanted some pictures for social media and our website. [I thought] it would be another great step and opportunity towards my fitness aspirations. Basically, it would give me a fitness goal to work for and another step out of my comfort zone—and I’d get the chance to work with world-renowned IFBB Fitness Olympia Champion and esteemed athlete, Monica Brant. I knew I would need extraordinary photos to use for social media and I wanted photos that would be beautiful to look at—that showed the hard work of maintaining a fit lifestyle, and that were authentically me! And lastly, I truly believe Sarah Lyons is the absolute best and top of the list for fitness photography.“

What are you currently working on that you’d like to share? “God’s timing is precise and I love watching His timing play out personally and with our family. It’s taken me a lifetime to discover my passions for everything fitness. And it took time. Moving into the field of fitness with a family in my 40s, studying, and gaining certifications [such as Personal Trainer, Nutrition Specialist, Behavioral Specialist, as well as certifications for handling and managing food] I just have to smile and be grateful for everything. When I think about starting my career at 40; it’s mind-blowing how it’s all come together. Our K2 Fit SmartSnacks website gives me the ability to provide unique protein-packed delicious snacks to clients and anyone else who wants to eat healthier. I also offer monthly specific workouts and monthly macro-balanced familyfriendly menus; along with recipes and a comprehensive grocery list. I also share what I’ve learned along the way in my own fitness journey, how to become the CEO of your kitchen, and information on the best protein options. Besides all of this, I get to share my love of fun, positive workout tank tops and muscle shirts that motivate you to get moving and will hopefully put a smile on your face. It’s a lot but it’s what I love to do.”
What is something you truly believe in? “I believe in being centered on thankfulness. If we exercise the practice of gratitude, it is scientifically proven that transformation occurs. Our brain releases neural modulation in the prefrontal cortex, which helps regulate negative emotions and activates dopamine and serotonin, which helps one feel good. Thankfulness is also proven to show a resilience to stress, improves sleep, improves relationships, helps with depression, improves memory, enhances hormonal balance, and increases energy and motivation. And, I’ve personally experienced the benefits of practicing gratitude to assist me in getting through some of the hardships and valleys life has thrown my way.” Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thes. 5:16-18.

What are you most thankful for? “I was blessed to be able to stay home with my twins. I know I’m on the cusp of such wonderful blessings. The opportunities to work with certain people I’ve met has been unbelievable. It’s not lost on me and I know that not many people have those opportunities. This has all be made possible because my husband Aaron is successful in his career and has supported me 100 percent. He’s is a huge part of why I do what I do—when I met him I never looked back and he has encouraged me to follow my heart. My kids have also seen all of this unfold the last four years. I believe there’s a purpose in what I am doing. I talk to my kids about their passions and what they’re good at so we can direct them to go after what they love, too. I want to be strong for them and be a good example.”
What message do you want to tell other women reading this magazine? “If we are honest with ourselves, many times if not most times, we begin our health journey with vanity as our motivating source. We often aren’t comfortable in our skin; perhaps we’ve put on some weight, or in 2020, many have put on the COVID-19 lbs… Or, we can’t fit into our clothes, we feel bloated, or struggle with inflammation. Maybe we aren’t sleeping well, our digestion is off track, we can’t figure out what foods we may be sensitive to, we find we are taking so many vitamins and supplements, yet still feel sluggish. Or, we don’t know how to add one more thing on our plate and feel completely selfish for trying to find time to work out and guilty for not working out. And, if we do carve out time, we then struggle with knowing what to do at the gym, how to organize our workout, or how much cardio to do. And, in a day and age with so much wonderful information at our fingertips— we wake up having over-stimulated our brains to the point of not even knowing what to believe or practice when it comes to our physical health. So, what do we do? We adapt, accept, and appreciate. We go back to the basics, keep things simple, and just start! I believe everyone, at least once in their life, should consult a personal trainer and someone to help with their nutrition. This will help you get started with a plan and accountability.”
51
What is the number one thing you want to do? “Make an impact. I wasn’t called to make this huge splash. I’m going to give it to God and honor him and honor my family. If I can help people with menus and make their life a little easier and use my knowledge, then I will be happy. I work locally with clients and provide them with monthly workouts—a workout every day and weekly menu and grocery lists mainly so they don’t have to think about it. I often work with 30 to 60 year olds who are not comfortable going on Instagram. Again, I just want to offer what comes natural to me like an entire month’s worth of menus and clean whole food eating ideas so they don’t have to do the work themselves. I like to provide tips on how to clean out your fridge, embrace the staples, maintain clean eating on a weekly basis, tips on protein, plant proteins, and options that I think are best for supplementing from your food. The tank tops I design and sell are the icing on the cake. I love them and they’re comfortable for any woman.”
I don’t think my purpose in life is to be a model. If the opportunity presented itself I would jump on it. I knew I needed to take this step with the website and social media. It’s been a huge blessing. But part of the reason I stayed back is the fear that I don’t have a social media following or know who I am. I am more comfortable one-on-one. I love that aspect of it. I can share what I’m doing in a more intimate way—and I don’t have to worry about other trainers out there.

Why is it important for women to express themselves and be self-confident? “As women, we’ve been gifted with these amazing bodies—heart, soul, and mind. We’ve been given great intelligence, with the ability to bring life into the world, whether that is our path or not. We’ve got strengths that only women have been given, emotions to help us fight for what is right, and compassion to serve those in need. We are the thermostat of our homes in charge of the temperature of our environment. With that being said, we are the helpers and counsel of those closest to us. We are multi-taskers and encouragers. Typically, we wake before most and our lights do not go out until most are sleeping. I hope and pray that all women continue to express themselves in a way that uplifts one another. Our confidence is what makes us beautiful. It’s the kind of beauty that ages with us and defines our uniqueness.
As women, we’ve been gifted with these amazing bodies—heart, soul, and mind. We’ve been given great intelligence, with the ability to bring life into the world, whether that is our path or not.

Feel Good Again in Just Days! Key Topics: Health Shortcuts for Body Wellness, Athletic Performance, Energy, Anemia, Immunity, Digestion, Gluten Inflammatory Syndrome, Celiac Disease, Whole Leaf Aloe Vera Juice Concentrate and Core Supplements, Mediterranean Diet. November, 2020 What does a world class tennis player, actor, teacher, policeman and child next door all have in common? The answer is: a food sensitivity to Gluten! Understanding gluten and the factors influencing Celiac Disease (CD) will give you the keys to unlock the mystery behind much of the early aging and disease development that affects each child and adult to some degree. Novak Djokovic, the number one tennis player until 2013, winning six Grand Slams, attributed his unmatched ability in sports to eating “gluten free.” Following in his footsteps are excited parents everywhere who are passing on the granola bars and whole grain cereals – allowing the kids and young adults to stay off ADHD and other pharmaceutical drugs, with just a few other dietary tweaks! Like it or not, the Gluten Free Craze is here to stay because reducing or leaving gluten out of the diet altogether really does allow one to feel better in a short period of time. Doctors are also getting on board with an improved definition of CD. Collective research in 2003, spearheaded by Dr. A. Fasano, MD, gave a better understanding of the broader symptoms that exist with ingesting gluten (through mother’s milk) in newborn babies, throughout childhood and with adults. Previously CD was thought to be rare, with just one in 10,000 cases. At last, this explained why so many patients living with chronic digestive issues (ulcers and failing health), were minimized and written off as psychiatric imbalances.
64
The classic symptoms of CD are diarrhea and weight loss due to poor digestion, and malnutrition. Surprisingly though, most people with CD experience few or no outward digestive issues, yet other symptoms are present. • • • •
Only about 30% of people diagnosed have diarrhea. 20% experience constipation issues. 10% actually becoming overweight or obese (not underweight). 40% have other health issues related to diet (see list).
Regardless of what type of digestive or health issues one might be facing, the advice is to be suspicious of dietary gluten found in whole grains; wheat, rye and barley. Other similar inflammatory complex carbohydrates cause reactions including oats, brown rice, sometimes corn, many thickeners, refined sugars (honey and stevia are OK) and also milk. To read more about contributing factors to failing health and bowel disease, along with getting some good tips on food replacements using low gluten grains, delicious recipes, plus the most valuable supplements used for health support – check out the self-help book called Beyond Gluten Intolerance GIS, available on Amazon or by calling 1-800-414-2563.
What, the Hull? Brace yourself for this next fact – the outer fiber from grains tests the highest in the gluten molecule which is made up of protein and carbohydrate! If this confuses you, believe me, you are not alone. The entire world population has been brainwashed to think that the whole grain fiber was the healthiest choice – not the case. Truly it is best to rely on food fibers from fruits, vegetables (non-grain) and beans (as tolerated). Making the switch, you will begin to experience the truth first hand. Eating the offending foods when sensitive causes gas, bloating and ulcers from the inflammation that takes place primarily in the small intestine, due to poor digestion. As years pass, if this inflammation continues in the gut without making dietary changes or adding supplements, the destruction of tissues in the intestinal tract results in malnutrition. It also allows larger food molecules to circulate through the blood. This elicits systemic flareups in the mouth (mouth blisters) and on the skin (skin blisters). A cascade reaction may also occur, referred to as the Gluten Inflammatory Syndrome(GIS), throughout the nervous system, causing other symptoms of CD and reducing body wellness, including:
65
• Digestive; (all types) diarrhea, constipation, ulcers, gas, bloating, acid reflux, heart burn, swollen belly. • Immune System Imbalances; (all types) decline and over-active autoimmune. • Weight Loss & Weight Gain; plus Obesity. • Anemia; pernicious type and malnutrition induced – lack of B12, Iron, Folic Acid, Protein, Vitamin A, C, B, E, Calcium, Magnesium and Zinc. • Slow Development & Pre-Mature Aging; failure to thrive, scoliosis, osteoporosis, short stature, delayed puberty, dyslexic. • ADD, ADHD, other learning disabilities, lack of muscle coordination. • Mental Illness; (all types) anxiety, aggressiveness, Bipolar, depressive, OCD. • Skin; (all types) rash, itchy, blistery, bruising, acne, dermatitis, white spots and advanced skin issues. • Headaches, Allergies & Fatigue. • Weak Dental Enamel • Nervous System; tingling, numbness in hands and feet, balance, tremors, asthma, heart palpitations and swallowing. • Joint Pain Anemia is one of the most common and important symptoms of CD. Mayo Clinic has elaborated about it as being a culprit behind much of the body fatigue experienced today. Anemia is linked to nutritional deficiencies and is experienced in epidemic numbers across the globe. The World Health Organization classifies anemia as the number one nutritional condition facing humans. It is linked directly to the multiple health issues including shortening ones lifespan. Anemia prevents life-giving oxygen from reaching the 100 trillion body cells that build the body. Nutrients that are critical for avoiding anemia and allowing proper functioning of the entire body and nervous system includes B12, Iron, Folic Acid, Protein and Essential Fatty Acids called essential nutrients. Also, the secondary essential nutrients required for complete metabolism for healthy blood cells are Vitamin A, C, B-Complex, E and the Minerals, Calcium, Magnesium, and Zinc. Ninety one nutrients are known to be required to cover all the health bases for optimum health of the body, sourced from foods or supplements and a robust digestive system is a must to absorb them into the cells which calls for Aloe. In 2003, research at the University of Davis in California showed a remarkable increase in absorption, up to 300% greater in Vitamin E, 200% in Vitamin C and B12 uptake was significantly better and timed released - when taken with a quality Aloe Vera juice*.
66
Today, many people are experimenting with lowering gluten in the diet. It is quite remarkable how quickly energy, focus and health begins to return – especially adding a few natural health shortcuts. Most people don’t have the urgency to get a formal diagnosis. They just want to feel better mentally and physically. In fact, because certain biological markers that may be missing (in advanced cases), a false negative from the routine gluten blood test is common. People are improving their family’s health dramatically without ever getting any true confirmation of the disease. Feeling better in every category is worth the effort, focusing on improving the dietary choices, digestion and absorption of the foods. Health Shortcuts for Body Wellness for a Three-Month Trail • Eat a more Mediterranean Diet; fish, lean meats, beans, red & yam potatoes, raw nuts & seeds (as tolerated), vegetables and fruits in season (organically grown when possible). Hard cheeses in smaller amounts plus butter, eggs and almond milk (unsweetened). Keep dry snacks, fried & junk foods, citrus and tomato products lower. • Drink a quality whole leaf Aloe Vera juice, dark in color, showing more yellow sap anti-inflammatory agents present (*concentrated if possible for strength by Aloe Life), or take tablets before meals to increase digestive support for kids and adults. • Supplements; Probiotics (milk free), Liquid B12 (under tongue), B-Complex, Omega-3 (fish oil or algae type), Daily Greens (powder or tablet), Multiple Vitamin & Mineral (tablet, chewable or liquid). Also, a liquid calcium and magnesium may be needed if yogurt and fermented cottage cheese are not tolerated.
67
Overwhelmed? Change is never easy, especially with foods and our lifestyles. Peer pressure in families can also be challenging. Do it for you first, don’t try to change the world.
The main regret that is shared from clients is wishing they had begun the renewal diet years before, in childhood! First – focus on eating three meals per day and reduce the quantity of breadstuff, cereals, junk foods and milk. Go with your natural cravings (not addictions) and eat foods that are grown (not processed) and those choices will make a big improvement. Next, get the quality Aloe and Probiotics started with a liquid B12, and then the Greens. Taking a daily greens is “healthy fast food” that decreases hunger and gives the body real nutrition without harm. Focus on one day - then one month and before you know it, in three months brand new cells are built and systems function better in the body very significantly, which allows you to “Feel Good Again” – Enjoy!

Capturing the cover Christmas issue 2020
By Sarah Lyons Glabman BodyScape Magazine lead photographer and publisher Every single time I head to Texas to shoot, I feel a sense of encouragement. I just know that God’s love is all around me. The proof is in the people He brings my way. Working with Kristie Kwan has always been very seamless‌easy. Kristie is always READY for whatever Monica and I throw her way, which, sometimes is very random! But we roll with it, and the images wind up speaking for themselves.
76
Enter makeup artist Lizbeth Mejorado. She’s soft-spoken. Quiet. The consummate professional. Lizbeth owns her own makeup studio in Austin, Texas called the Look Agency. She educates up-andcoming glam artists on how to fine-tune their skillset, and these students aspire to achieve the level of perfection the Lizbeth has created in her own. I absolutely LOVE it when I can walk on set, sit the model down with a glam artist, and not have to give any direction to the artist whatsoever. Lizbeth is one of those rare gems that just GETS IT. She understands what is needed to pull of a look whether we are using no lighting at all and just working with natural light, or if I have four high powered lights going in an extreme lighting situation, and the makeup doesn’t lose any detail whatsoever. I’ve only worked with a few artists that have that confidence.
77
78
So, here we are in Austin, at Kristie’s beautiful home for the SECOND time. We were fortunate to have Lizbeth join us both times, and now I am fairly certain that Lizbeth is Kristie’s OFFICIAL makeup artist. Each and every image was shot on Kwan property. Can you imagine what it will be like when I get Kristie out of her own home? Like on a beach somewhere? (I can’t even….) Kristie was all set up for a BodyScape Magazine Cover shoot, and she didn’t even know it.
79
Monica was a huge help assisting Kristie’s every pose. And I mean every pose. When you have a physique like Kristie’s every line on her body counts. It’s imperative that you have a pro model coach in Monica Brant on-hand to see what I am seeing through my lens. Pose that physique to a point where all of the hard work comes out. Not only comes out, but POPS out. Athletes like Kristie (and Monica!) have trained their bodies to a level that 90% of Americans could never achieve. That’s a real story. So, when you’re being photographed, you want to make certain that each pose is executed with precision. Kona Kamai, BodyScape Magazine’s official videographer was on-set with us to capture these great behind the scenes snaps of the day. I love images like this that tell OUR story. And, that’s what I am good at. Telling your story through my lens with my awesome crew by my side. It really comes down to team work!
