Letter from
The Publisher Sarah Lyons Glabman
So much joy and positivity radiates through me as I write this letter for Issue 15 of BodyScape Magazine. What a blessing to be able to do what I do…putting these fabulous magazines together to showcase and edify women. I usually wait until the entire issue is completed to write the publisher’s letter; not the case this time. I was on the phone with one of our newer contributing writers, Dr. Sean Drake yesterday, and we were reviewing his article for this issue. He was so excited when we were talking about the cover story of Dr. Sarah Gueli, and I was going on and on about our fabulous writer Kerrie Lee Brown, and how she always delivers the most incredible interviews for the cover models…and he stopped me. He said, “Yeah Sarah, she is amazing, but the visual aspect of how you and your team are able to lay the story out from a visual perspective gives me goosebumps! You are changing the game!” Well needless to say, that made me feel great and sometimes I forget about all of the work that I do on my end to make this happen. I’ve been a professional photographer mainly in the fitness industry for 14 years. I decided to start this magazine for women that A- love to do amazing photo shoots, and B- have a story to tell. Getting back to Dr. Sarah Gueli and her remarkable story, we found her on Instagram, and saw that she was obviously fit, obviously very pretty, but also that she is an MS SURVIVOR…and when I say survivor, she really has taken ahold of her disease and turned it around. She lets nothing get in her way. Her no-excuses mindset has gotten her through, and her lovely husband Jared is by her side, supporting her and lifting her up each step of the way. In fact, Jared is now an honorary member of the BodyScape Magazine Supportive Husbands Club! (Yes, that’s a thing. There’s even a T-shirt for the fellas.) BodyScape Magazine is different from many other ‘fitness’ magazines in many ways. First, I don’t expect you showing up to your shoot looking like you’re about ready to walk on stage for a fitness competition. If that is the look that you have or want to capture, then by all means we can and will shoot the daylights out of it! But you should know that is not expected at BodyScape. In general, I prefer a look that is achievable and healthy. If you feel like this is you, and you would like to do a shoot for a future issue of BodyScape Magazine, send us an email! BodyScapeMag@Gmail.com We would love to hear from you. There are BIG things happening throughout the rest of the year! Of course you can come shoot in Scottsdale, Arizona most of the year at my studio, and you can also join Monica Brant and I on one of our Epic Destination Photo Shoots. Next up is Sedona, Arizona September 17-20, and our locations are amazing! Sedona is one of my favorite places in the great state of Arizona. (Head to epicdestinationshoot.com for the details) And because Epic Destination Shoot Miami was such a HIT, we are going back for Version 2.0! Epic Miami will be taking place January 27-Feb 2, 2022 so mark your calendars! You will not want to miss this incredible opportunity! Thank you for all of your support!

Summer 2021 is here, and I feel like if I blink, it will be over and fall starting! Like much of the other central states, Texas has experienced a lot of rain so our landscape around our home and town are lush and green. Thankfully I have been able to get outside and enjoy the days, either at the barn working alongside my husband with his professional horse business (www.jewettperformancehorses.com) or at the track accomplishing some fantastic sprint sessions to stay conditioned. As we head fast and furious to the end of July, Sarah is treating me to a visit beginning of August so we can work on our upcoming Epic Destination Shoot in Sedona, AZ. and collaborate on future plans too (hint hint—MIAMI 2022!). It’s always a special time when we get together and have focus meetings. Speaking of special times, our shoot with Dr. Sarah G. is one of those times. She and her super supportive husband Jared arrived at our private location (Sarah Lyons always finds the best spots!) and we got to spend time getting to know one another and hand pick her wardrobe. These are fun moments as we all start visualizing which outfits may become our personal favorites, and…which one will land the cover?! This shoot was double special because our Celebrity Profile Writer, Kerrie Lee Brown, was also in attendance and we had already had a super fun day brainstorming and celebrating our time together- prior to Dr.G showing up! And honestly, it was challenging for us all to end the night and get to sleep, there seemed to be so much more we all wanted to talk about and share. But the fun night had to end so we could all wake up and BE READY for the big day to capture the COVER of Doc Sarah! During our conversation with Doc and her husband, we learned more about her journey through life. She has experienced so much on both ends of the spectrum, from her education and current position in Colorado, to survival and current competitive goals. I admit I really cannot believe this beautiful doctor has not been in front of the camera more. Helping her pose during her shoot was simple, and she molded right in to every cue. I feel what Kerrie wrote in her cover feature, “—she also possesses an enviable sense of selfconfidence that most can only dream of. She is stunning and smart. Strong and courageous. Adventurous and not afraid to follow her heart. Dr. G is also all about believing in yourself no matter what obstacles you face.” sums up this beauty perfectly! What a delight to share Doc’s story and I just know it will be a blessing for others to hear of her courageous journey!
As always, Stay Fit, Love Life and God Bless you! Monica Brant International Fitness Athlete, Model & Entrepreneur IFBB Fitness Olympia 1998

Dr. Sarah Gueli BodyScape Magazine Cover Model Feature
WARRIOR WITHIN
THE
By BodyScape Magazine Celebrity Profile Writer
Kerrie Lee Brown By now you’ve probably noticed that every issue of BodyScape Magazine features a ton of incredibly inspiring women who have for the most part gone through their own unique struggles—and yet have successfully come out on the other side even stronger. All of these women are heroes in their own right. This month, the BodyScape Magazine team is excited to introduce you to Sarah Gueli, our newest fearless female to grace the cover.
23
This is the story about a warrior, not a worrier… What’s so amazing about Sarah Gueli? Well, besides the fact that she’s a revered pediatric doctor and has a wonderful, supportive husband by her side—she also possesses an enviable sense of self-confidence that most can only dream of. She’s stunning and smart. Strong and courageous. Adventurous and not afraid to follow her heart. Dr. G is also all about believing in yourself no matter what obstacles you face. After all, she should know. Not only does she work in the medical profession but she’s a survivor herself. Sarah was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2012 and fights the disease’s impact on her body every day. According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, nearly 1 million people over the age of 18 live with MS in the United States alone; and more than 2.3 million people have an MS diagnosis worldwide. Dr. G’s drive to push through her unexpected diagnosis is unprecedented. She had to learn to walk again and use her hands, which is critical when working on tiny babies in the operating room. Sarah’s also dealt with adverse side effects from various medications, and for a long time, she didn’t think she’d even make it through the night. Nonetheless, her strength and resilience continue to push through the ups and downs. And, more than anything, Sarah Gueli is determined to prove that you can do anything you set your mind to.

Pain to Purpose I had the pleasure of witnessing Sarah’s courage and confidence in front of the camera at her BodyScape Magazine photo shoot. Amazingly talented publisher Sarah Lyons Glabman photographed these beautiful photos in an eclectic, art décor home in Phoenix, Arizona. It was like magic. With hubby Jared by her side adoring every move (how could you not in these lingerie pics?) Dr. G’s unwavering drive to get the perfect shot amazed me even more. Over the following pages you’ll see Sarah Gueli’s inner voice scream, “I’ve got this, and you can too!” as she displays her classy as well as sassy sides. After all, every woman deserves to show what they are made of inside and out. As we spoke in-depth about her journey from diagnosis to now, and all that she is currently doing to inspire others going through similar life events, I couldn’t help but be inspired myself. Dr. G is not only beautiful—she is a force to be reckoned with.
27
About the Photo Shoot Sarah says her BodyScape Magazine photo shoot was a dream come true—and she wants other women to know that “anyone can do this.” When asked how she felt having all of the attention on her, she admits she loved every minute and would do it all again. It’s no secret that after everything she’s been through, Sarah was invested from start to finish. Her advice to others: “Whatever you do, don’t worry! The Bodyscape Magazine team will take such great care of you. Enjoy the whole process. If this is a once in the lifetime thing for you then take it all in and love it. If you’re doing something because you want to then just enjoy the experience and don’t care about what others think.” In the end, this first-time cover model wants women to be inspired by their own gifts and purpose.
The BodyScape Magazine team is amazing, they see to every detail, and I am just a regular person.

You only have to flip through these pages to see how her unique wardrobe looks go from stylish fitness-inspired to sleek, sexy glam to realize how much her confidence is brought out. Special thanks to the iconic Monica Brant for her styling and posing expertise on set. So, as I reflect on my own life and how lack of confidence can become a hinderance at times, I realize in hearing Sarah’s story that nothing should ever hold you back. If you want to book a photo shoot with BodyScape, then do it. If you want to move across the country, then do it. If you want to fly to the moon, then do it. There’s always a way. With that being said, I hope you enjoy my interview with Dr. G. Perhaps you’ll take away something that resonates with your life.
“I bring so much of that confidence into my regular life. I always tell myself, ‘I can do that!’”

Q&A KB: Where are you from originally and where do you live now? SG: “I was born and raised in Buffalo, New York (Go Bills!). Buffalo is where I spent the first 30 years of my life. I completed all my medical education and met my husband there. We spent five years in the Hudson Valley area of NY after I completed medical school, and then moved to Durango, Colorado. We’ve been out here for about four years now and have no plans to leave.”
KB: WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT? WHAT MAKES YOU GET UP IN THE MORNING? SG: “I’m passionate about living my life. Being in medicine, you see stories all the time where things happen to people that it shouldn’t happen to. People who are ‘too young’ to be dealing with it or who ‘don’t deserve it’. Sometimes it still doesn’t sink in until it happens to you. If it does, you realize how quickly it can all be taken away. So, I’m passionate about the good days I have. The days I wake up and nothing hurts. The days I have limitless energy. Those are the days I love and those are the days I live for.”

KB: What are your aspirations in life? SG: “Growing up I loved to read, and I loved the ‘hard stuff’ in school like science and math. I knew from a young age that I wanted to be a doctor, it was kind of always there. After college I attended medical school at the University at Buffalo. During medical school and clinical rotations, I decided I wanted to be an anesthesiologist. I loved being in the operating room and being part of a team that gets a patient through surgery. After residency, I decided to do another year of fellowship to sub-specialize in the field of pediatric anesthesiology.”
KB: Explain what you mean by “the hard stuff”? SG: “A lot of times if young girls start to express an interest in math or science or engineering, people automatically tell them it’s going to be really difficult. But I believe that anything boys can do, girls can do too! It’s sad to think that females get the response ‘it’s going to be really hard, but if boys do it they don’t get as much negativity. It sets an impossible standard for girls.”
Shooting with Sarah Lyons Glabman, publisher of BodyScape Magazine, was incredible all around. It’s almost hard to put it into words and even still when I see the pictures all I can think is, ‘wow... I did that!’ I’m so grateful to the team that was there to make this experience a reality.

KB: When I met you in Phoenix, Arizona at your BodyScape Magazine photo shoot, your husband Jared was there and he was extremely supportive. Tell me about your relationship. SG: “My husband Jared is amazing. He’s very supportive of everything I do—whether it’s a bodybuilding competition, a magazine photo shoot, or my career. He fills me with confidence every day and is there for me during every crazy, ridiculous thing I set out to do. Even when I wanted us to move to Denver from New York, he was all for it. It seems a lot of people have doubts when you ‘think big’ but he never does about me. He is my rock. But, I must say that I also support him in everything he does too, in his career etc. He works very hard, 12-hour shifts. We’re both in medicine so we understand each other’s jobs and the dedication it takes.”

KB: What obstacles have you had to overcome to get to where you are today? What would you like to share with our readers about your story? SG: “I always thought that becoming a doctor would be the toughest challenge in my life, but I didn’t know how hard I could really fight until everything fell apart. I have very vivid memories of the day my life changed. It was July 2012 and I had just started my fellowship training. Everything in my life was going just according to plan. I was training in a great program, set to have a wonderful career. I had married the man I loved in 2009 and things were amazing. Then, I was in the O.R. one day and started to notice [that] I was having difficulty with my right hand. It progressed rapidly to the point that a few minutes later I announced, ‘I can’t move the right side of my body’ right in the middle of the operating room. What followed was a whirlwind of ambulance rides, imaging scans, and invasive tests. The imaging scans combined with fluid from a spinal tap were what ultimately diagnosed me with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).”
KB: As a young, healthy person, you must have been scared. SG: “I was devastated in every way. My whole life was crumbling. I had spent its entirety training to be a pediatric anesthesiologist and now I couldn’t walk or feed myself with my right hand. I was immediately put on IV steroids which helped at first. I could move my right side but not well. It was like moving underwater or how it feels if you sit on your foot wrong and it falls asleep. That was my whole right side.”
KB: What was your next step in the recovery process? SG: “I knew that if I wanted that life I had been planning, it was going to be on me to work. I spent the next month starting over. I learned to walk again. I started by draping myself over a treadmill and dragging my legs along below me. I also had to work on my right arm and hand if I was going to return to performing delicate medical procedures on the tiniest of patients. I did lots of crossword puzzles with a pen to work on my writing skills—the boxes for the crosswords forced me to keep my lettering small and even. I also ‘played’ a lot of the game Battleship, moving those tiny pegs precisely into tiny holes was great therapy.”
KB: How did this devastating discovery make you feel? What did you do? SG: “It was hard. It was humiliating. I often felt defeated and hopeless. And I let myself feel bad about my situation. It sucked. I wasn’t going to try and pretend it was some kind of ‘opportunity’ to be better. It just plain sucked. But I did something else important. For however long I wanted to wallow and feel bad, I had to spend twice as long doing something that improved my situation. If I cried for an hour, I had to spend two on the treadmill, with my crosswords, making up fake situations that I had to fix. And an amazing thing happened... I realized that no matter how long I spent feeling bad, no matter how much I ugly cried and wailed... I never felt better. The harder I worked, the better I felt. To the point where I’d feel so good, time would fly. I would spend the rest of the day working. It was just over a month that I went back to work, no limitations.”
47
KB: Sounds like you were adamant about dealing with your MS. What happened next in your journey? SG: “After that I thought for sure things would be OK. I started on medications for my MS so I wouldn’t go through another flare up or worsening of symptoms. However, it was around Christmas later that year that things fell apart again. Since it was around the holidays, I had a few days off and when I came back to work, I was asked ‘why are you yellow?’. It happened slowly so I hadn’t noticed, but in fact, I was yellow. My medication was pouring me into liver failure, and I was jaundiced. We immediately stopped the medication but over the next few weeks things continued to worsen. It got to the point where my neurologist wanted me hospitalized. I told him that I worked in a hospital. I was stubborn and stupid, but I refused to stop or take more time off. ‘Well, if you slip into a coma, at least they’ll take care of you’ was his reply. It was the sickest I’ve ever been, the worst I’ve ever felt. I couldn’t eat because I would get nauseous— and I was swollen with fluid in my legs, up my back, and in my lungs. I would get out of breath walking from my car to the locker room to change for work. Sometimes knowledge is scary, and I knew enough to know that the way things were, I might not get better, and I might not survive. I made very clear my wishes for the end of my life and every night before I went to bed, I told my husband I loved him with tears in my eyes because I did not know if I would be there in the morning.”
I thought about doing a photo shoot around the time I was getting ready for a bodybuilding show, but never did! The BodyScape Magazine shoot was a dream come true.
KB: Wow, that is scary! At what point did things start to get better? SG: “It was weeks and weeks until my numbers finally stabilized and started to improve. Finally, the next spring I was feeling like myself. I graduated on time and took my first job in the Hudson Valley area of NY. It was pretty uneventful. I was started on a new medication and work was good. I was ready to move on. Then one day routine lab work showed I was having a reaction to this new medication. It had dropped one of my immune cells to zero which puts you at risk for serious infections. Nothing serious happened but I finally was forced to realize that I needed to make a change. It was obvious to me that the risk of these medications was too high. I needed to be able to treat my disease with lifestyle changes. The biggest of those was the stress and demands of work. In my job, I was working 60 hours a week, nights, weekends, holidays etc. I knew I needed to stop putting those demands on my body. That’s when my husband and I decided to move to Durango. We had always wanted to go to Colorado when we ‘were older’ but decided we should go now so we could enjoy it while we had time and so I could take a less stressful job.”
KB: What made you decide to shoot for BodyScape Magazine? SG: “I decided to shoot for BodyScape because I can... and I wanted to! Going through everything I went through would be worse if I didn’t take something away from it all. The mindset I live with now is more ‘if I can do something and want to do it...why wouldn’t I’? I don’t want any regrets, I want to live every day.”
48
49
50
KB: How did you first hear about KB: What are you currently BodyScape Magazine? working on that means a lot to you and you’d like to share? SG: “I had competed at the Rising Phoenix bodybuilding competition in Scottsdale on December 5, 2020, and after that, the magazine’s social media manager reached out. It happened so fast, but the next thing I knew I was traveling from Colorado back to Arizona in February of this year to shoot with Sarah Lyons Glabman and her team. That’s where I got to meet you! I’ll never forget the experience and will be forever grateful. These amazing photographs to last a lifetime and will always remind me of how far I’ve come.”
KB: Do you have a coach you’d like to thank? SG: “I do, yes! I’d like to give a shout out to Janeen Lankowski in Florida. She does online coaching with me. Janeen is a professional bodybuilder and works with clients who want to compete or just change their lifestyle—she is great for self- confidence.”
KB: Your photo shoot was extremely inspiring. It was quite obvious that you were really enjoying yourself and taking in every moment. SG: “I think that’s because I was! This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that was offered to me. Jared and I both thought it would be a really great opportunity. Why wouldn’t we do it? I never thought about getting the cover and then I did. Dreams do come true. It’s so amazing.”
SG: “Right now, I am working with a small group of anesthesiologists in the south Denver area (Complete Care Anesthesia). For me, I don’t enjoy medicine when it’s run like a factory churning out products. Patients are people, not things. I don’t believe bottom lines or numbers of cases should be the driving values behind how we define care. I prefer a smaller group, a more intimate setting, a chance to take care of people.”
KB: What is something you truly believe in? SG: “I truly believe in living your life. Figure out what’s important to you and give it all you’ve got. This is the one chance you have to get it. Also, don’t let anyone else’s opinions of you influence what’s important to you. A lot of people ask me if I regret not having children or if I regret moving to Colorado. The answer is no. I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve done in my life, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!”
KB: What message do you want to tell other women reading this magazine? SG: “I want to tell women to stop listening to what others tell you. Everyone. Every industry that’s set up to capitalize on the shortcomings they artificially create. Every person selling a product to fix a flaw they invented. Everyone who says you can’t because they’re afraid of what will happen if you DO. Shut it down right away. You can, and you should.”
51
KB: You speak a lot about women and confidence. How important is that to you? SG: “It means everything. I wouldn’t be where I am today if I didn’t get over my issues or setbacks. I have a lot of amazing, confident women around me, so I am fortunate to have a great support system. For instance, I often work with teams that are entirely female. Myself, the surgeon, the nurses and techs, the assisting staff... all women. And sometimes I think to myself, ‘wow, this is cool: all women’. But what I really want is this to be normalized. I want to eventually see more teams in medicine and every business/career to be composed of women and it be a normal thing. The fact that I think it’s cool that I’m working with a team of women shows us that we’re not there — it’s not a widely accepted thing. But we’ll get there one day.”
“Being on set was very eye opening. The BodyScape team was so welcoming… Sarah, Monica, Kona, and Leiah for makeup, etc. I never used to think my story was interesIng untiIl I started to share it.”

The Art of Being An Athlete Part II By BodyScape Magazine contributor
Dr. Sean Drake athletechiropractic.com
This issue of BodyScape Magazine is a prime showcase of how limitations, whether physical or mental, with the right team, mindset, and path can be overcome. I was inspired by Dr. Sarah Gueli’s story and how she was able to overcome obstacles, continue her passion for service as a health care professional, and be an inspiration to others throughout her journey. She is one of the real superhero’s in this world and guess, what you are one too! Many times, we do not start moving towards health because we are scared of what we do not know. We often want to ignore the signs that we are not thriving in life, and that we have forgot about our dreams and goals because we are so stuck in the “doing busy” life. What if that isn’t the path? What if we can come back to life, listen to that voice inside speaking to you; trying to show you your best, and most important, the ability to execute on that inspiration. I always ask my patients, if I were a genie and you had 3 wishes for your health; how can I help you? If you were to list what your wishes are, what would they be? When choosing these be mindful, take time to really think about what you want.
Your Wishes: 1. 2. 3.

If you are currently struggling with pain, discomfort, lack of fulfillment, not feeling successful, or numbness, this can all change. Trust me and take the leap to ask for help! Every great athlete has a coach and team to help them find that extra percent which makes good; great. There is a quote I learned while in my studies.
“You never know how far reaching something you may say, think, or do today will affect the lives of millions tomorrow”. B.J. Palmer. Moving the body in the most efficient and strongest way possible is an art much like the way a painter finds the perfect combination of colors, and a photographer the best lighting and angles. Time, energy, and an ability to think outside the box are all needed to create the best athletes. And just as every writer has a unique process, the technique used to find the way your body moves at it’s best will always depend on each individual person and their personal goals. To respect the body and want what’s best for our health, means treating the body as a masterpiece of art. Take a minute to say, think, and do something for you that complements the wishes that have been written down. If you can start to tackle these, you will start to shine brighter, and we need more light in the world. Is your goal to get fit? Go get that assessment from a fitness professional. Are you in pain or struggling with something in your body or mind? Get an evaluation by a medical provider who understands functional movement and will look at you for performance in life, and not just your symptom. When you seek help have a specific visual and tangible goal; this way you can set expectations and reward yourself. The fun part here is once you start doing this process and look at your life you will see progress; so don’t get stuck on perfection. This is the great thing about life; it’s a journey.

BodyScape Mag: Where are you from originally, and where are you living now? I was born and raised in Austin, Texas
BodyScape Mag: You have a gorgeous physique! What motivated you to shoot for Bodyscape Magazine? My good friend and trainer Kristie Kwan did 2 shoots with BodyScape and encourged me to do one as well. It gave me a goal to work towards and a timeline for acountability. I knew I would push myself harder than I ever had (which I did) to meet the goal of looking my best. I also saw this as an opportunity to step out of my comfort zone. I’ve always been camera shy and I knew this would be challenge to overcome it. The sense of accomplishment I felt and still feel is priceless.

BodyScape Mag: Talk about your workout regime. Did you have to do anything different to get ready for the shoot? My workout journey began 3 years ago at age 43. I started at Orange Theory, working out there 5 days a week with a couple of girlfriends. Initially, it was just a fun and healthy way to spend time with friends. It didn’t take long to see some minor results and I was hooked. I enjoyed the weight lifting portion much more than the cardio and decided I wanted to put more time and focus into lifting. I joined Inspire Fitness with the intent of getting 2 private training sessions a week to supplement Orange Theory. Those 2 sessions a week quickly turned into 6. Lifting weights became my passion. I continued to do cardio a couple times a week. Once I committed to doing the photo shoot, I upped my cardio from 2 hours a week, to 5 hours. I also made the commitment to eating cleaner and healthier. I increased my protein and cut down on fat. The extra cardio and adjustments to my diet made a real difference in my appearance. I’ve tried really hard to keep up these good habits post photo shoot.

BodyScape Mag: What do you do for work? I am self employed as a dog trainer. I’ve had my business, Capital City Dog Training, for 21 years. I’ve always been passionate about animals and knew I wanted a career working with them. I feel so blessed that my passion became my career. My job is so rewarding and fun, I can’t imagine doing anything else.
BodyScape Mag: Name three of your favorite hobbies and why you love them. My very favorite hobby is working out. I love everything about it, it’s my favorite way to spend free time. I love the way I feel during a work out and the energy I have when it’s over. I’m lucky that I get to work out with my husband, some really great friends and some amazing trainers. As a business owner, mom, and wife, I don’t get a lot of time to do things just for me, but I’ve made my health and fitness a priority. I do love spending evenings at home with my family watching movies and we all enjoy relaxing by the pool.

BodyScape Mag: What is your favorite food? My favorite food is Italian, specifically pizza! Even as a little girl, I could put down a lot of it. I don’t restrict myself from any foods but do practice moderation. I don’t believe in denying myself really good food and feel that by allowing myself to indulge on occasion, I’ve created a lifestyle I can maintain for the long term.
BodyScape Mag: What was your favorite vacation, and why? My very favorite vacation was a trip I just took this year. My husband and I took all 4 kids to Alaska. We spent 7 amazing days there, and there was an adventure for each day! We toured glaciers, river rafted, fished, hiked, hung out with sled dog teams, and flew in a helicopter. The quality family time was incredible. Having the kids away from technology and out in nature made for some of the best memories

The Fountain of Youth By BodyScape Magazine
“Fitness Connection” Karen Mullarkey
I was training a client the other day and a long-time gym member approached me. He said, ”Karen, I have known you for 15 years and you do not age. What is your secret to the Fountain of Youth?” I laughed and replied “I’ve been at this gym for too long!” But seriously, here are my top 10 secrets to the Fountain of Youth to share with you.
1-Water, water and more water! We live in an arid climate and hydration
is key. Do your best to drink at least one gallon of water a day, especially in our hot summer months!
2-Keep moving! Let’s face it, we are all getting older. The moment you stop moving rigor mortis sets in. Get off the couch and get to it y’all!
3-Resistance training is key! As we age our skin loses it’s firmness and we
also lose muscle definition. You have to get in the gym and lift those weights. Ladies, you are not going to get “BIG” from lifting weights, it does a body good. Skinny fat is not an option.
4-Cardio! I know we all hate the “C” word, but it is necessary. As we age, being heart healthy should be more of a priority. Resistance training combined with cardio and a healthy diet are the building blocks for the fountain of youth.
5-Nutrition is so important! Look at food as fuel, not flavor! Work hard,
hydrate and fuel appropriately! If it’s raised on the ground and grown in the ground, chanced are it’s good for you.
70
6-Supplements can’t hurt, especially during a pandemic!
I take Previnex supplements to help support my immune system. Here is what I take daily:
Vitamin C, B and D, Collagen Peptides, Calcium, Previnex Multivitamin, Prevenix Joint Health Plus, Previnex Omega Pure Plus, Previnex Brain Health Plus. (Be sure and take with food to avoid an upset stomach. For 15% off your first purchase, use my discount code ‘nomullarkey’. www.previnex.com.)
7-Positive vibes all day! The mind is a powerful thing so stay positive, do the work and the results will follow. Where there is a will, there is a way my friends!
8-Skin Care! I would love to give a shout out to my laser skin care specialist, Cindy Semerdjian of Scottsdale Skin Institute. I have been doing IPL photo facials for the past 15 years with Cindy. Research shows that staying consistent with photo facials will take 10 years off of your your age. You can find her at www.scottsdaleskinintitute.com.
9-Learn balance, Danielson! Life is all about balance! Mr Miyagi from The
Karate Kid couldn’t have said it better. I hit my workouts hard Monday-Friday and let my body recover over the weekend. Weekends I golf, do water sports, mountain bike or do nothing at all:). We need to recharge as we age!
10-Laugh and Smile:). We are all on this crazy ride called life together. Take
the time to destress and to laugh. It does a body good!
There you have it, those are my secrets to the fountain of youth. We are all in our own driver seats so take them for what they are worth. Remember “No Excuses and that’s No Mullarkey”!

Top 10 Summer Skin Protectors: Aloe Vera, Veggies & Fruits By Karen A. Masterson Koch
Skin takes a beating year round, yet summer comes with extra abuses that truly require the A -Team. A is for Aloe and Vitamin A rich foods, both critical if you want to have the best skin protection. At the top of the list of summer skin protectors is a quality Aloe Vera. Topically it, gives an advantage for fast skin support, increasing Type I Collagen, UV protection, First Aid relief for sunburns and injury, and also support for chronic troubled skin. Acne, Rosacea, Eczema, Psoriasis, rashes and scarring all respond well to a quality Aloe Vera topical. Internally, Aloe Vera taken before meals as a supplement supports the inside for improved digestion and absorption of valuable skin nutrients. The extra bioavailability of nutrients is significant for skin and ignites energy and immunity, too. Remember, it’s not just what you put on the skin, but what you put in the body and absorb into the cells that truly counts!
Actions of Aloe Vera & Vitamin A Rich Foods • Healthy Skin & Anti-Aging • First Aid & Type I Collagen • Body Immunity & UV Protection Improving dietary choices and good water intake can sometimes take a little time. By taking small steps you can develop better habits. Just add one new food each week or kick up the quantity of veggies and fruits with every opportunity for big results. A great new habit may be reaching first for the apple, orange or Kiwi with some raw nuts and seeds or peanut butter, and keeping the dry snacks lower.
74
Targeting the dark yellow, orange and green-colored foods will kick up your Vitamin A levels which the skin and body both thrive on. These same foods come with other important skin nutrients as well like Vitamin C, Bioflavonoids, E, B-Complex and essential fats and oils that slow aging of all cells. Focus on healthy skin and it will set the stage for a healthy body. Also, remember protein! Protein is essential for building cells in the first place. Get a variety, half your body weight in grams per day, approximately 50 – 100 grams for adults. Proteins rely on the other nutrients from foods, as a team, to build hormones, immunity and digestive enzymes, as well as skin cells. The entire human body is made of cells, just specialized by individual DNA according to each cell’s function. Mind you, these days many people, both children and adults, do not receive adequate quality protein & other nutrients and, therefore, do not digest foods well.
Why is Aloe Vera Both a Skin & Body Supplement? The ancient herbalists wrote about the Aloe Vera plant as an Elixir — safe for any ailment and often referring to it as the Skin Plant. Internally, they used the bitter yellow sap from the whole leaf for improved digestion, constipation, infection, water retention, ulcers and pain. Topically, they made poultices for any injury, burn, ulcers, rashes, infections and pain as well. Hundreds of research papers now confirm the pathways of action of a quality Aloe Vera product, or using the plant itself. The bitters and sulfur compounds support improved digestion. Astringents, disinfectants, natural antiinflammatory, anti-bacterial and antiviral agents assist in wound healing. The glyconutrients and growth factors stimulate new cells and collagen in record time for stronger connective tissues and even reverse scarring, plus evening out skin tones. Note: Any caution to use is due to its cathartic action of the bowels. If diarrhea occurs, reduce the daily amount.
75
What is special about Vitamin A? Focusing on skin with more vitamin A brings additional benefits. Highly-researched Vitamin A supports any skin condition and gives a super charge to immune response. Most skin cancers are associated with a low level of Vitamin A in the skin. Vitamin A also supports bones, soft tissue, mucus membranes, mouth, eye/vison, heart, lungs, kidneys and other organs. Vitamin A is found in fruits, vegetables, livers of fish and animals, egg yolk and fish oils. It is required in very large amounts to keep the skin healthy and immunity functioning. It also provides anti-aging benefits. Foods containing Vitamin A will have an abundance of other essential skin nutrients.
Top 10 Skin Protectors Water: Dermatologist and nutritionist agree that dehydration is the most harmful omission to health of the modern man, woman or child of today. Healthy skin and body require half your body weight in ounces or at least 6 – 8 glasses of water per day. Diuretics and heavy perspiration will increase the requirements.
Aloe Vera The question with a good Aloe is; “what doesn’t it do?” Besides being a catalyst for improved digestion, drinking Aloe helps maintain healthier cellular water levels due to its content of macro and micro trace minerals. The entire plant, called Whole Leaf, contains over 100 actives that support digestion, detoxification and bio-availability of food nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Actives include infection fighter saponins, pain relievers’ salicylic acid, bradikinase and lupeol, immune balancers polysaccharides, sterols and sterolins, plus the growth factor gibberellin and more. These actives are responsible for this unique herb’s broad applications of repair and renewal of skin and more. Look for the ActivAloe trademark showing quality and Concentrated Whole Leaf juice products for fast action and effectiveness.
76
Peppers All peppers, all colors, contain high Vitamin A and C (highest food source), plus a variety of other skin nutrients known as anti-oxidants. The dark red color shows more phytonutrients supporting immunity and a sweeter taste.
Carrots, Yams & Squash Root vegetables and squash are available year round and are great choices for Vitamin A. Carrots are one of the best sources. Steamed, raw, or juiced carrots contain important antioxidants shown to slow aging and protect the skin from pollutants, even cancer. Skin replication and immune function are both heightened greatly. The vegetarian source of Vitamin A is Beta-carotene, named from the carrot. Its downside is it requires a healthy liver to process it to help build skin cells. Fish Oil Vitamin A, on the other hand, gets absorbed directly into the blood stream. Chew all raw veggies carefully to help make the nutrients more available for absorption.
Dark Orange & Colored Fruits Papayas, oranges, Kiwis and berries are packed with the anti-oxidants Vitamin A, C, E and phytonutrients. They support every function of the body and healthy cells, especially remarkable for support to allergies and immunity. Peel fruits and avoid berries with advanced mold allergies. Leafy Greens All greens including Kale, Chard, Spinach, Mustard Greens, Green Lettuces, Cilantro, Watercress and Parsley are best eaten raw or lightly steamed and are packed with skin and body nutrients including minerals. Minerals are very important to build healthy skin including wound healing. They are great for detoxification and immunity as well and are often found in supplemental greens formulas.
77
Chlorella & Red Sea Algae Classed as super foods, they are harvested from fresh water and ocean salt water and contain an extraordinary variety of important nutrients. Very high in Vitamin A and Chlorophyll, they are often added to supplements of daily greens formulas to support body wellness.
Raw Almonds & Pumpkin Seeds Healthy eating often includes a small handful of raw nuts and seeds (as tolerated) to support valuable protein and Vitamin E, plus minerals like Zinc and silica, required for healthy skin and body.
Broccoli & Brussel Sprouts These two foods (including cauliflower) are in the “cruciferol food class” and contain healthy natural sulfur and an abundance of other minerals for bone, joint, skin and body health.
Avocados Besides being delicious, this fruit is fairly high in Vitamin E and other natural fats and healthy essential oils. All fat soluble vitamins like A, E, D, EFA and K require healthy oils to be properly absorbed into the cells for good skin and body health. Optimum Health of the body and skin doesn’t just happen — it takes effort. The only side effect of eating new foods and taking Aloe is improved health. Most people want to look their best and feel good, yet statistics of troubled skin including skin cancer, are soaring. So why not control our destiny and begin to make easy, natural and tasty choices today. Enjoy!
