What is the definition of a “fitness model” to you? I’d like to know. Over the past two decades, fitness models have become very popular. Is it a stage-ready, ultra lean look? Is it someone that has transformed from one size to another? Someone whom has overcome a tragic event and now is in the gym to recreate themselves?

Editor-in-Chief:

My definition of a fitness model is someone who: ~Has an attainable physique ~Is not so lean that you see each and every crease in their face ~Represents a healthy, and again, attainable look ~Is confident in their own skin, whether they are a size 12+ or a size zero

Art director & Creative Solutions:

different physiques, attitudes and lifestyles abound in this issue, and I want to present them all to you. Some are more “popular”, and others are just getting started in their respective careers. Young or old, new to the gym or not, your “fitness” is a choice. If you go to the gym, go hiking, do pilates, or group fitness, the one thing ties these activities to a common bond is getting you MOVING. And we ALL need to move! Movement lubricates the joints, arteries, and gets your heart pumping so that you r body can work effectively. Therefore burning calories and creating your result. The old adage remains true to today, and I {do my best} to live by it each day. Calories in vs. calories out. If you eat more calories than you burn, you WILL GAIN WEIGHT. Plain and simple! So be aware of what you put in to your mouth when heading toward your goal! The consistent vision the I have for the shoots I do is to promote health and wellness, in a glamorous and sexy way, and I would love to share my craft with you. If you’re interested in shooting with me, and experiencing fun and a ton of support, laughs, and memories along the way, shoot me an email at PictureGroovePhotography@Gmail.com. Next upcoming issue is our Special Edition…”Exotic Beauties”

The Editor

So, let’s get one thing straight: If you don’t know Monica Brant or who she is, you’ll soon find out. First of all, Monica Brant graces the cover of this issue of BodyScape Magazine. She is a world champion fitness competitor, model and track star. She’s also a well-known lifestyle advocate for her clients. Her practice includes fitness and also health, nutrition and a host of other wellness pathways for those who come to see her. Most importantly, Monica is a genuine, confident, warm-hearted and beautiful human being. I am blessed to count her as a friend. Right now, she and Sarah, my daughter, PictureGroove photographer and publisher of BodyScape magazine, have teamed up to produce Epic Destination Shoots, of which probably most of you have heard. www.epicdestinationshoots.com is a site they’ve been working on. Monica has been in the Phoenix area recently working with Sarah on Epic Scottsdale. I met Monica last July to help she and Sarah produce Epic San Antonio, where Monica lives with horse-trainer husband Brad and their two dogs. I tagged along mainly to hold the reflector and schlep the lighting equipment from here to there. For starters, Monica introduced me to some dietary supplements about which I was totally ignorant. At age 74, I’ve come to realize that anything that promotes health and wellness is at least worth a try. So, I’ve become a fan of powdered beets, for example. Put a scoop in a shaker bottle or your morning smoothie and you’ll automatically boost your intake of nitrous oxide for more energy. That’s just one of her recommendations. If you haven’t met Monica and want to know know more about her, go to www.monicabrant.com or head to her Instagram @monicabrant. It’ve been toying with the idea of using this page to publish Letters to the Editor where readers can comment on subjects addressed in BodyScape or other topics devoted to health and fitness. So, I’d like you, dear Readers, to share your personal stories about Monica, how you met her and your experiences with her. How did she impact you? Just send your offering to me at mike.c.lyons@hotmail.com. I’ll devote this Letters to the Editor page to you.

Home Made Food BY BODYSCAPE PUBLISHER SARAH LYONS Who doesn’t love a great home-cooked meal? With the world on go-go-go all the time, it seems nearly impossible to sit down and relax, with some good food at home. In each issue of BodyScape Magazine, we will feature a recipe from someone awesome, and share it with you. These recipes are healthy (for the most part), filling, easy and delicious. The BEST part of them though, its that each one takes less than one hour. The key to all of it is to actually take the time to do it! Enjoy yourself. Play some music and get your cooking vibes going! Cooking can be lots of fun, especially when tasks are divided between 2 people. Make a date out of cooking at home! Here is a great chicken soup recipe from Issue 4 cover model Susan Hoff. Enjoy!

Chicken Soup: GOOD FOR MORE THAN THE SOUL Please, for the love of all that is good, put down the can opener and step away from another bowl of instant soup with a shelf life longer than the time it takes for your favorite team to make it to the Super Bowl! This isn’t just another “good for the soul” chicken noodle soup recipe. Instead, this is a recipe perfect for when you feel a cold coming on but your sweet tail is too worn out to cook. It’s easily shared with expected guests or surprise visitors. I mean who doesn’t fancy a warm savory bowl of soup on a blustery day? It also covers your much needed Protein/Carb/Fat macros without the higher calorie count. Take the few extra minutes to make this exceptionally tasty recipe, and utilize some of those extra veggies in your fridge you’ve been staring at for the past week. We’re looking at you, carrots and celery.

HOFF’S HOMEMADE HEN SOUP INGREDIENTS: Prep: 10 Min Cook: 20 Min Total: 30 Min Servings: 6

1 Tablespoon Avocado Oil ½ Cup Chopped Onion ½ Cup Chopped Celery 58oz Organic Chicken Bone Broth 14.5oz Organic Vegetable Broth ½ lb. Chopped, Cooked Chicken Breast

1 Cup Sliced Carrots ½ Teaspoon Dried Basil ½ Teaspoon Dried Oregano ½ Teaspoon Lawry’s Salt Salt & Pepper to Taste

DIRECTIONS: In a large pot over medium heat, cook onion and celery in avocado oil until just tender, roughly 5 minutes. Pour in chicken bone and vegetable broths and stir in precut chicken, veggies, and seasonings. Feel free to add a pre-dried carb of your choice, ie. noodles, dumplings, or rice. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer 20 minutes before serving. I hand make my gnocchi-like dumplings and add them after it boils and is simply simmering then I garnish with freshly diced kale leaves just before I serve it.

13

14

DON’T SETTLE FOR JUST ANY VEGETABLE BROTH A lot of recipes you’ll find around the internet call for vegetable broth, and while picking up that watered-down and boxed shelf-staple is easy, you can make that magic potion yourself. It’s as easy as stuffing scraps in a bag and boiling water. When you’re cooking during the week, toss those extra shavings of onions, carrot peels, celery, garlic, shallots, and leeks into a gallon bag. Oh, and we’re not overlooking mushrooms, bell peppers, and herbs. Add them to the party. Keep cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and brussels sprouts out the party-they can get a bit bitter after too long (pun intended). When you have about 5 cups of scraps, toss them in a large pot with another 9 cups of water. Simmer it all over medium heat for an hour and add a teaspoon of salt and pepper for flavor. Then turn off the heat, allow the pot to cool, and strain out the scraps for some truly original vegetable broth. Easy to Store Without Going to the Store The vegetable broth isn’t the only element that can be stored or frozen for another rainy day. After creating your own delicious bowl of chicken noodle soup, you can easily save it in small containers for an ultra-convenient work time lunch or postworkout dinner. With a recipe as delicious and convenient as this, we won’t blame you if it becomes a weekly staple during the holiday season. Chicken soup is great for your sinus, easy on your tummy, and with a bit of salt can help with hydration. Enjoy! Cheers!

Gone are the days of being “over-cardio’d” and being “shredded” year round. Healthy, curvier shapes are to be desired and attainable, and these twelve women are perfect representatives of a healthy lifestyle.

@MonicaBrant

At 20 years old, I would never have dreamed my life’s path would lead me on such an amazing adventure. After all I’m just a country girl from Texas who loves sports and horses. It was 1989 when in my first year of college that I found the old weight machines in the school gym and guessed how to use them! To my surprise, other students started asking me how to exercise. It was in this stage of my life that I started to discover how much I enjoyed helping others. That small beginning has grown into my being involved and working in the fitness industry for 27 years and I have had the opportunity to turn my athletic passion into a successful career. When ‘fitness’ was beginning to take off in the mid 90’s, I was hired to travel worldwide spreading the good news about health and fitness while demonstrating the differences of a ‘fitness’ athlete from a female ‘bodybuilder’. Men and women were hungry for something other than ‘bodybuilding’ so they looked to my lead. I really enjoyed interacting with people from all over the world. Through the course of my profession I’ve been very fortunate and have been featured on the cover of both international and national fitness publications’ over one hundred times. I’ve won some amazing titles including the IFBB Fitness Olympia 1998 (same title Arnold Schwarzenegger was known for in bodybuilding), WBFF World’s Figure Pro both 2010/2013 (I was 40 and 42 while on stage for those titles). And most recently, in the fall of 2016 (at age 46) I was invited to represent the USA in 2 shows, both held in the United Kingdom. After being off the competitive circuit for 3 years I decided to prepare for the shows and add an exciting European vacation with my husband. Obviously, winning one Overall Title and taking second in these two shows gave me a great sense of accomplishment ,while proving that women in their 40’s can still be competitive! As much as I enjoy the challenge from the athletic side of the competitions, the thing that drives me most is the anticipation of the interactions I share with the other competing athletes and fans during the events. I love that fitness has given me this opportunity to connect with so many lives worldwide.

78

I’ve discovered that there are some amazing things we can do when we believe in ourselves and dream big! In 2013 I decided to return to my love of sprinting and after 25 years away from the track I competed in the W40-44 age group in the USATF Master’s Track meets (100, 200 & 400m races). During the 2013 World’s Master’s Track meet held in Brazil I earned top 3 placings representing the USA in my events. Once again this provided more opportunities to encounter people from all over the world and prove a healthy lifestyle pays off. Although fitness has become an integral focus of my life I’ve discovered how to have consistent success balancing fitness and living LIFE. My passion is to share this message of lifestyle balance with women and men all over the world through the various ventures I’m working on. BSM: Monica, What inspired you to go into the field of fitness? As strange as this may sound, fitness was only a hobby for me back in the early 90’s. I had no idea I could actually make something out of it for a career path. I did not have a role model for a business structure or even honestly know what that meant. However, I did feel challenged by the few competitions I’d entered and I was curious about where I could take my abilities. It was at this point I met a trainer that designed a weight lifting plan for me (end of 1990) and this was when I first saw photos from an actual Fitness Competition in a Bodybuilder magazine. Since ‘fitness’ competitions officially started in late 80s, they were still relatively new to everyone and I was intrigued after seeing the beautiful pictures of the winner, Marla Duncan. I decided to purchase the VHS tape offered in the magazine of the most recent National show to learn more. I recall inviting my family and close friends to come to my place and watch the tape with me, and proceeded to tell them I wanted to give it a try too! I located a show to prepare for in the summer of 1991 in Arizona and my Mom went to support me when it came time to compete. I found an aerobics instructor who helped me with a routine for

79

80

81

this show... hate to say it but I it was a hot mess of a routine compared to the current fitness competitor routines! You see, I was never a dancer or cheerleader. I was a track athlete and horseback rider who didn’t know one thing about dance, pointing my toes or smiling on stage to entertain a crowd. However, I worked hard to learn to perform the routine as best I could and since there were only 2 of us on stage, I ended up taking home first place. I certainly recall laughing at myself while trying to learn the ‘running man’ or ‘roger rabbit’ dances. (which by the way I never mastered either) Winning the show in Arizona piqued my interest enough, and having won I was invited to compete shortly after in the Ms. Fitness Nationals held in Vegas. As my talent on stage grew (slowly but surely), new adventures happened, and I landed my first cover of Muscle & Fitness in 1994! When it came out on stands, I recall purchasing at least 10 copies at the local grocery store where I’d shopped for years without telling the cashier it was me on the cover. During this time, I had a few odd and end jobs such as waitressing, personal trainer, children’s horseback riding instructor and from time to time some modeling. I figured I could do most of this if I moved to California, where the fitness movement was happening. In April 1995 my Daddy hauled me and my stuff to Redondo Beach, CA and dropped me off. I remember him driving away on his Harley he brought in the front of the U-Haul to drive home. Looking back at this moment, even though I was excited about the move and the possibilities that lay ahead, it felt daunting at the same time. My resources were limited, and I barely had 5 acquaintances in the entire state of California. As well, I did not know how I was going to earn a living at this point. I’ve discovered facing our fears is one of the most empowering moments a woman can have. Thankfully I am an internally motivated person and made one strategic call landing me my first modeling job the very week I moved! Out of the 5 people I knew in CA, one of them was my big brother’s past roommate who I lived with that first year, right by the beach. Waking up to waves crashing on the beach was something I never knew before and it was a stimulating location with all the activity that happens in a beach community.

82

As I began to learn my way around, settle into some routines and earn some income I was able to afford the move to Marina del Rey, to be closer to the heartbeat of fitness and body buildingthe MECCA, Gold’s Gym Venice Beach, California! Looking back, I believe this bold move to CA was instrumental in securing my place as one of the ‘pioneers’ of the industry as I was in the right place at the right time with the right attitude and work ethic. In Golds Gym, I connected with an amazing choreographer who took my fitness routines to the next level, and I also met all of the top fitness photographers for the industry at that time. Back then most photoshoots for the fitness publications were taken either in Gold’s Gym or in the surrounding areas of Santa Monica/ Venice. Learning to stay ‘photo shoot’ ready was a must as this was the hub of all fitness. As the photographers and fitness magazines grew to trust my personal upkeep, I was given numerous opportunities to shoot and sometimes only a couple days’ notice. It could be any time of the year and if I was not ‘in the shape to shoot’ they would move to the next girl. If that happened too many times, they quit calling you. This is where I started to really learn how to balance life and fitness. I was one of a handful of the first fitness models that were completely ‘fitness’ and being on stage in the competitions only gave me more exposure as the magazines would feature the shows/placings. As I am writing this I am recalling many stories of how I grew through these years, how I learned to network and present myself while building my reputation as an athlete, professional, model and leader in my industry- all the things that have laid the strong foundation for my career. I was in a constant state of personal development and I believe this is a must for everyone, no matter your occupation. I didn’t realize winning my first fitness Pro show the same summer I moved to CA would be such a pivotal moment for me! This Championship set me up to be a leading contender in the competition field and provided me with an invitation to the very prestigious (first ever) IFBB Fitness Olympia 1995! I joined the top fitness ladies in becoming the very first professional fitness athletes of all time. I always had to quickly determine how to market and present myself . Reputations can be ruined quickly in this world. When necessary, I asked other trusted industry professionals (many of

83

84

85

them were the professional male body builders) questions regarding situations or people that I was unsure of. I’ve never had a problem asking for guidance and I believe it’s important for others to get out of their comfort zone and ask for help when necessary. Throughout the years I’ve been privileged to pay it forward by giving my time to listen and provide sound advice for other fitness professionals as they walk through situations. If we want to grow, we must have mentors and coaches to help get to the next level. Even now I have an amazing business coach who challenges me to dream big and grow. These diligent actions all led to hundreds of photo shoots for magazine exposure worldwide, paid guest appearances also worldwide, featured articles and started my endorsement deals with various companies in the industry. To the best of my ability I have kept in touch with my fans who sent fan mail from all over the world. Over the years, the mail piled up and with my hectic schedule it was impossible to keep up. To this day I appreciate my fans greatly and am honored when they share, they have been following my career, some for 20 years! I am continually looking for new ways to engage with them through social media, my website, www.MonicaBrant.com and events and programs I’m developing. I’ve been very blessed in this journey and to called one of the ‘pioneers’ of the fitness industry has been a very rewarding experience is to put it mildly. BSM: Since you have been in the fitness industry, what changes have evolved? The internet was a game changer and recognizing this I was one of the very first fitness athletes to produce a website. Having a website allowed much more interaction with fans and potential job opportunities. Of course, since the explosion of the internet, the largest change has been with the social media frenzy. Now more than ever, there are thousands of people marketing themselves as ‘models’, ‘trainers’ and ‘pros’ when they haven’t done any competitions, modeling jobs or educated themselves correctly to be considered a trainer. These FB/IG models are working diligently to build the most ‘Likes’, ‘Follows’ and ‘Mentions’ to gain notoriety on their own. Instead, in the past, magazines and companies helped develop leaders with the official athletes through advertising and features.

86

With all the ‘free’ tips and advice it is even more important for people to make wise choices with who they let speak into their life. On the flip side, when you want information for something specific it’s easier to obtain those from multiple online sources today. Over the years I’ve helped thousands of people through the internet with my experience and advice as well as plugging into other experts for new ideas for nutrition/wellness, new exercises and what arises as the latest trends in the industry. BSM: What aspects of fitness do you feel are the most important? Over the last 28 years I’ve discovered having a healthy balance of emotional & spiritual strengthening is more important to the overall mind, body and soul than just the physical. I’ve met more super fit people that feel they are missing something or have low self-esteem due to only focusing on the physical. Therefore, I decided to focus not only on the fitness side of a person but also on their entire life and that’s why I considered myself a ‘Lifestyle’ Coach and not a ‘Life’ Coach. BSM: What is lifestyle coaching and how does this help women on all levels? Lifestyle Coaching encompasses both fitness and life lessons and it is my experience that women and men need support in both areas. Learning to balance attitudes, emotions, situations and schedules while also pursuing a change in their physique can be quite demanding, especially if they are married and have a family. Today’s women are challenged like never before in the past generations to have a balance in their life due to the demands of having a career and a family. I’ve discovered the power of having both. When I am working with a client as their Lifestyle Coach, I partner with them in a thought provoking and creative process that inspires the client to maximize their personal potential. It brings me great joy to feel I can guide my clients through their desired personal changes to experience fuller and more meaningful lives in every area.

87

88

89

BSM: What has been your most rewarding experience to date? If you have more than one, please feel free to mention them all. As an athlete, it would be easy to list the achievements that I am most proud of from the time I was young, and maybe one day I will do just this when I write my next book. However, the most rewarding experiences I can recall are the thousands of personal conversations and messages received from women around the world who have shared their stories with me of how I helped them in their life journeys through my articles, posts and meeting me at events. It is an outstanding honor to discover that one has changed the course of someone else’s life in a positive way by their actions. We never know when one word or an interaction can inspire someone to become a stronger version of themselves in any area of their life. BSM: Please explain how health, emotional and spiritual fitness intersect and why it is so important for the sum to be greater than the parts. Many times, over the years, my Daddy would share an example of life with the talk of a 4- legged table and how the table can’t support weight from 2 or 3 legs only. I believe our lives are like a table, we are a ‘4 -legged or 4 -part’ being that requires a balance of Spiritual, Physical, Emotional/Relational and Career/Dreams. These four parts summed together equally make for a fuller, healthier life. BSM: Can you walk us through an example of Lifestyle Coaching and explain what it entails? An example of Lifestyle Coaching would be the partnership between client and coach working to discover or excavate that which already exists within the client. Once the detailed design of client’s goals/visions/passions have been discovered, the coach will support the delivery of change through accountability and guide the client’s goals into action. One of the ways to guide the development of goals is by being SMART! Specific and welldefined goals with detailed objectives. Measurable criteria for measuring progress. Achievable/appropriate, ensuring the client

90

has the skill set and capacity to achieve goals. Relevant/realistic considerations of the goal, degree of challenge and reflection of similar pursuits Time and date for goal to be achieved. A great way for clients to monitor their progress. What I instill in my clients in the very beginning that this will be a process of support and challenge. BSM: What have you discovered being a personal trainer/nutritionist that has helped you as a Lifestyle Speaker? What sets me apart from other speakers, is in almost 3 decades of working with clients, through personal training and Nutritional Coaching, I’ve discovered that LIFESTYLES need to be addressed and considered to truly lead people with support for the desired change they are after. For example, here are some of the things I’ve discovered over the years. While forming a training session or package for personal training clients, I make a point to open their engagement in a variety of exercise types to challenge them both physically and mentally. With nutrition coaching, my goal is to guide clients to make wiser choices year-round (not just when they are working towards a goal) by experimenting healthy nutrition tricks and working through any of their lifestyles that hinder them from making those wise choices. Also, experiencing with different foods to find what works for their body with the end goal of a nutrition routine that is sustainable and satisfying. Obviously, my goal is to help them achieve their goals physically and much of this can be done by refocusing some of their thought patterns about food and how they utilize it. We all know food holds a major role in life, we use it for every emotion possible as well as a celebratory tool. Unfortunately, food cravings can also be a way to self-sabotage. My clients must have a healthy mind about food and learn to use food to their advantage not allowing or permitting food to rule them. I use the same approach with my clients that I use for myself. Keeping ME healthy and having functional/usable muscle always takes a certain mindset and skillset. Most clients seem to be walking through life with no direction for their health. I want to see that change for them as I know it will bring new joy and fulfillment to their lives. These are a few life keys that I have discovered through PT/Nutritional Coaching that I incorporate into my Lifestyle Keynotes. These life lessons and others I teach are vital in maintaining a healthy body, provide natural energy and release the best mood enhancers for productive and successful lives!

BSM: Looking good and feeling good usually go hand in hand so to speak. What is your philosophy in the fitness field and how does that help others? True, usually they do. After hosting women’s events for almost 15 years it is amazing to find so many beautiful, very fit women deal with poor self-esteem. It is my belief that you can look great on the outside and feel terrible on the inside. Therefore, I focus on fitness and lifestyle. You must have both to live a consistent successful life. This is true from a nutritional stand too. I’ve seen massive change in client’s attitudes after transforming their bodies by healthy eating and appropriate exercise. Most people don’t fully realize that proper nutrition can affect inflammation, immunity and effects on the brain and even behaviors. Changing our lifestyle through fitness and nutrition can greatly improve our attitudes, energy and moods! Deep down want to feel good inside and out and I’ve discovered that is the key to a happy, successful life. BSM: Please share some tips with us so we can all benefit from your experience. Physical: Step out of the comfort zone and CHALLENGE yourself in different activities and training types. For example, people should keep in mind that weights are your ‘friends’ and will help you shape your body because we can’t ‘tone bone’! Don’t be afraid to lift heavier and push the intensity in ALL your exercise opportunities. After 20+ years of lifting heavier weights, I have reaped the rewards of heavier lifting as opposed to extended easy cardio or light-high reps. Allowing your body to undergo the taxation of weights will allow you to open the energy receptors in your muscles to absorb and utilize the nutrients you eat. With this said, it’s imperative to have the proper fuel (food) for muscle growth and recovery. Plus, hire an experienced coach if you are unsure of the exercise you want to engage in. Emotional: Take time to De-Stress more often and allow yourself to relax. Move on from hurts and disappointments from others or yourself. Just let it go .. if you can relieve emotional baggage everything else becomes lighter and easier. Nutritional: 2 words: Manage Insulin. Insulin can be your best friend or worst enemy when it comes to fat loss and retaining muscle.

91

92

93

Learning how to manage it correctly- making it work for you not against you will extend your efforts. Eat lower glycemic index (GI) foods (lean protein, healthy fats, fibrous carbs) as a rule, and combine higher GI foods (sweet potatoes, yams) with lower ones (lean protein, fibrous carbs) to lower their net impact on your body. The secret is knowing WHEN to eat your starchy foods, not ignoring them. Timing meals according to your exercise will help you receive the benefits of insulin. After a weight training or sprint-type interval session, adding a small amount of starchy foods in the mix along with your post training meal can work well. This is your golden opportunity to have insulin direct the correct starches you eat to your muscles and not your fat cells. For most of the other meals, focus on protein, healthy fat, and carbs mainly in the form of nonstarchy vegetables - I like to say GREEN IS GOOD! Spiritual: Take some time to pray, meditate and refuel your spirit! Many times, I have caught myself looking to eat because I thought I felt hungry (or simply just wanting to snack) when what my body was really in need of was some spiritual fuel. Keep watch on this area for yourself and next time you have a craving for something that may set you back from all your hard work take a mental examination of when the last time you stopped to pray, give thanks and then LISTEN to what God may be saying to you. BSM: I noticed that you end your emails with “ Stay Fit, Love Life & God Bless You!” At one of my first paid appearances, while I had the privilege of signing photos for fans, I learned quickly that I needed something creative to write other than ‘Love, Monica’. I did not feel ‘love’ was the right expression and simply ‘Best Wishes’ was also too shallow (in my opinion) for me to use with my signature. I decided ‘Stay Fit & Love Life’ made sense to me because I felt that people simply needed to remember to ‘Stay Fit & Love Life’. At one point, while signing autographs during one of the larger shows, I had an elderly man approach me and was happy to share that the year before I signed his photo with this message, and he took it to heart. He decided to start loving his life and one of the ways he did that was by taking his wife dancing! He said that way it also helped him ‘stay fit’. I will never forget the impact that made on me and how I realized

that the words I personally write to fans will be taken to heart. I’ve used it ever since and added the ‘God Bless You’ as to me, I’m asking God to look favorably upon this person. I am confident that words are very important and how we speak to into others’ lives can make a positive or negative impact whether it’s one word or many. BSM: Do you have any advice to give to those that need the motivation to stay fit? There are many people that want to feel good about themselves both physically and mentally, but they just don’t have that motivation. Any words of wisdom? Here’s a thought … Imagine with me for a moment that ‘motivation’ is like a muscle. As we all know, any muscle that goes without working becomes soft, weak, strained when used and unreliable when it comes to supporting the weight of the body. The Motivational ‘muscle’ exists in all of us, just like we all have abs. However, some people choose a lifestyle that allows the abs to be seen clearly because of their daily habits of healthier eating practices and exercise routines. If the motivational muscle becomes accustomed to ‘lounging’ and not being used consistently it will become covered with selfdoubt and low selfesteem, just like the abs of someone who chooses to eat poorly and lacks discipline. In that case, the person must find an external motivational tool that will start the motivational internal muscle firing once again. This could be as simple as getting honest with oneself while possibly standing in front of the mirror asking themselves simply “Why?” Why do they want to become fit or remain fit? Does it serve a purpose in their life? Will it make them a better athlete? Do they want to live longer? Do they want to feel better? Do they have a goal? Will they feel better for their line of work? Do they want to make an impact on their children, families or even a spouse perhaps? Once people are honest with themselves and start working towards their ‘REAL WHY’ or their heart’s desires the motivational muscle revs up again and can be counted on even when life happens. Again, just like a muscle supporting the body in physical strain, our motivational muscle can support us as we go through life’s ups and downs if we maintain it correctly. I’ve discovered it’s helpful to handwrite our WHY and make multiple copies for each room of our home as reminders. Once the REAL WHY is determined, it’s important to formulate a

goal that correlates to the WHY. Having goals, even small ones, are imperative to growth and forward movement. After the goal is determined, incorporating a date for the desired result is key. Next would be to determine what action steps are necessary for the complete follow through contributing to a successful goal. The key is to be honest in the beginning when determining the WHY otherwise it won’t drive the actions and next is to be realistic when setting the goal. It’s OK to have small attainable goals starting out. Achieving small goals will lead to more confidence for larger, more exciting goals in the future. If people could stop settling for less than what their heart’s desires are and successfully follow through with their goals the motivational muscle will remain strong and capable of handling all life’s curve balls. Exciting things are coming soon, so be sure to watch for the release of Monica’s new website this month, and the launch of her band new Radiant Lifestyle Online Coaching Program in January!
