The Publisher Back to reality! Well, sort of. LIFE BEYOND COVID-19 Is it over yet? Who knows if this “thing” will ever fully go away. I’m not referring to JUST Covid-19, as if that wasn’t a big enough curve-ball for the entire world, but also these other pieces of ultra-negativity that have been tossed at us from some really deep and dark places. I’ve chosen to handle this in the most positive way I can, and for me, that is by praying (multiple times a day) and having a positive outlook on the good times and focusing on the blessings that I have. Hard work and persevering towards bigger and greater goals has been a VERY good way (for me) to move through this foggy patch in life. When you dial your mind in to something that has challenged you, or seemed nearly unattainable, there is no time like the present to check yourself at the door, get out of your own way and GO. You literally have nothing to lose. I have found that through being still, and having silent time alone, I can really go inside and discover the depths within my mind and my heart that I never knew existed. Try it! it works. This is Issue 8 of BodyScape Magazine and I am beyond excited to showcase my work with Instagram Celebrity Theresa Miller! @TmillerFit Theresa and I have a shoot history dating back to 2014. Needless to say that outside of her 1 Million + Instagram followers, she is the PERFECT cover model and representative of BodyScape Magazine. When we were discussing this shoot, she was emphatic about the message that she wanted to send, and that is one of a “Strong mind, Strong Body”. It all goes hand-inhand, but the real reason for this message lies inside of Theresa’s article that she wrote exclusively for BodyScape Magazine. There is no interview, because there was no real way TO interview her on this topic. It comes from her own personal experience of life, growth, and moving forward. The photos are pretty amazing too.

Is your summer flying by too? I just cannot get over how the last 6 months have disappeared, seems it was just yesterday when Sarah honored me with my January 2020 BodyScape Cover!! Since my first cover appearance on Muscle and Fitness in November 1994, I have enjoyed a generous amount of both national and international magazine covers. I can honestly say that I am greatly humbled when I see myself on the front of a magazine. I never, in my wildest country girl dreams, (growing up in the county of a small town with only 2500 population) would imagine myself on the cover of 1 magazine, not to mention over 130 in the 26-year span of cover features! As I reflect on each cover shoot from the past there is a special memory, settled deep in my heart, that comes back to life. From the photographer, to the location, to the hair/makeup artist, to what I might have done after the shoot. Back in the early days I would treat myself and whoever was with me to an ice cream from Baskin n Robbins. There are so many wonderful memories and people that I had the opportunity to work with along the way. The odd thing about this shoot for BodyScape Magazine was my attitude going in. I didn’t really feel like I was ‘ready’ to shoot. We spent so much time on preparing for the models that I had’t really concerned myself about shooting. I remember sitting to get my hair and makeup done and I was still just going through the motions. But Sarah stood me in front of a glittery gold wall and after about 20 minutes of wind whipping my hair (and contacts) around, some back and forth with my hips and dumbbells, we were done! Just like that! I remember thinking, “that was easy” and well, fun! And just as quick as we could, all dolled up, headed out for a bite to eat! As we thumbed through the images on her camera my excitement grew! As an entrepreneur, athlete and professional model, new professional images are a must. But I had no idea one of these images would end up on the cover of Sarah’s pride and joy BodyScape Magazine! I happy she managed to encourage me to get in front her lens that day! She did not care that I was not feeling ‘my best’ and her confidence in me allowed me to bring it! When Sarah offered me space to share my thoughts and opinions as the Associate Editor for BodyScape it just felt right. Sarah and I have been working together for a year and a half with Epic Destination Shoot and we compliment each other so well. Together our talents and combined years of experience are fierce!

You don’t need a gym or a nutrition plan to get in shape. By Bodyscpe Magazine contributing writer, Micki Fisher @mickilynnfisher I get it. There are beginners and special populations in need of professional help. If you are not aware of how to target muscle groups or burn fat efficiently, these are valuable lessons to be learned. A gym environment is one way to become educated. Athletes usually follow plans using gym equipment to achieve sport- specific results. I would encourage new fitness enthusiasts to learn about nutrition and it’s benefits toward overall health. Those with diseases or diagnosed health conditions should certainly seek a licensed specialist. For the vast majority, there are self-guided diets and workouts for beginners to advanced fitness enthusiasts to get you non the right path.. Most of us are connected through social media and apps that do almost everything in one click. It’s all at your fingertips. Unless you are prepping for a competition, you can follow many experts with credentials and gain new workouts and recipes on demand. The beauty of this is you do not have to pay a membership fee and adhere to anyone else’s schedule! You can do a workout and search new recipes on your own time. As many of us are transitioning to a “stay at home” work life, we are also forming new social habits. I’ve noticed more interactions with social media fans and when I post about the food I’ve made. People love it when I post cooking videos and

pictures with recipes. And as much as I value my years of competition dieting on/off season plans, truth be told, I don’t use them anymore. Nutrition is constantly evolving. You do have to find your own rhythm as you age and the body changes, which means being your own personal dietitian. There are thousands of diets to follow that anyone, anywhere can find online. Popular diets right now include: Paleo, Keto, Vegan…there are so many diets that exist. So, forgive me if I missed your favorite one. The fact is, we are all different. You learn through trial and error what consistently proves to benefit your body. Sometimes, you have to change your eating habits to reach your desired results. There are no shortcuts. Pick a healthy meal plan and follow it. Make changes based on results or lack thereof. Educating yourself is the number one best thing you can do for a lifetime of fitness and healthy living. The reason you do not need a gym to have a challenging and effective workout is because fitness has been evolving also. Many of the newer at- home equipment is interactive and linked to online coaches and streaming videos. The fact is, you can follow your favorite Instagram fitness guru or find a new one every day if you have internet access. Secondly, you don’t need any equipment at all if you like yoga or running and hiking. Be creative with your workouts.

14

A few of my favorite pieces of equipment include: TRX suspension trainer -

I love my TRX. I have two of them. One is in my garage attached to an exposed beam and the other one is in my back yard attached to a tree. The TRX is the most versatile piece of equipment I own. Suspension training forces you to engage your core and has exercises for every muscle group in your body. I like to use them for lower body burn outs, incorporating balance and repetition.

Swiss Balls - I have several sizes. I spent many

years instructing mat Pilates at the YMCA and always incorporated Swiss balls. Try a reverse pike with your feet or shins on the ball and your palms on the floor. Various levels of pushups are achievable, from beginner to advanced. It’s challenging and it’s fun!

Resistance Bands –

My band collection is vast, my favorite of course is the Booty Band. Everyone is after a tight tush right now. There are hundreds of Booty Band videos circulating, many of them are challenging to complete because the Booty Band works! It burns and you will be sore if your band has enough resistance and you work through the pain! Smaller bands can be used around the ankles or wrists.

Kettle Bells –

I enjoy Kettle Bell swings and transfers. Introduced to fitness enthusiasts through Cross-fit and hybrid boot camps, Kettle Bells are not for everyone. You may get some bruises on your wrist when you first begin working with Kettle Bells. You will toughen up and get used to it. Kettle bells are also game changers for core and total body fat burn. I like to add a plyo-sumo squat jump to my single arm KB upright rows. Very effective.

15

Slam Balls – Sometimes you just need to slam

it into the ground! These balls are mainly filled with sand and come in different weighted sizes. I use a 12lb ball. Halo-ball slams are my favorite move. I also enjoy lateral slams against a hard surface or overhead to the ground. Your Goal is to Break it!

Take advantage of the outdoors. My best “gym” is over 80 miles of hike and bike I have access to from my back yard. I do various drills, including: sprints, weighted walking lunges, park workouts in front of a pond. The main point to conditioning, over your lifetime, is to like it! If you hate running, why are you running? Skate, swim, or ride your bike. The world is your oyster.

There is no “perfect plan, especially in the world we are living in now” Whether you are practicing social distancing and are just not comfortable going to the gym, or you simply want to be effective on your own; You can get great results with solid at home workouts. I love my community and I do make time to work out with my neighbor or good friend occasionally. My motivation is selfish: I have to work out to feel good and be healthy. I will do that anywhere I need to and I will eat what tastes good to me and fit it into my diet. You can, too.

Clean Beauty By BodyScape Magazine contributing writer Shelly Mattson

@bmbshell_tx

Do you ever give any thought to how many products a day you put on your skin, your largest organ? I didn’t. Certainly not until I was asked that same question in the interview process for a company I ended up working for 11 years ago. Up until that point, I had spent my entire career in the beauty industry and that thought had never even crossed my mind. Putting myself through college working at a makeup counter in a department store, and on through the years moving up through sales and management to now VP of one of the biggest and first true “clean beauty brands 28 years later, I have come to realize that this question has just as much relevance today as it did so many years ago. I think the reason it hit me with such force is because I found myself later that day, and the day after, and the day after, wondering why, when I am so conscious of everything I put IN my body with the food I eat, that it had never occurred to me to think about what I was putting ON my body.

going on in the industry that had given me so much passion, so many lifelong friends, countless years of applying makeup and feeling so good changing the way someone felt about themselves.

Theresa Miller STRONG MIND. STRONG BODY. What does it mean to you to be both strong physically AND mentally? Why do you enjoy working out? Personally, I believe that your mindset and mental strength and health is even more important than your strength physically. Why? It ALL starts in your mind. How you deal with struggles, how your perceive things, how you overcome challenges, and how you reach your goals and dreams. The thoughts you process and things you tell yourself will set the tone for so many aspects in your life! No matter what you may be going through, always try to keep the faith, then set your intentions and manifest your future. The energy you put out into the universe will always come back to you. Just got to BELIEVE it to ACHIEVE it! DO NOT allow self doubt, negativity and toxic people and things try to prevent you from your destiny. Stay authentically YOU! I’m here because I genuinely want to help and I care. I also LOVE what I do! Training and gym therapy has truly saved me on so many days during the tough times. It truly makes me happy and puts me in a good mood no matter what I’m going through. Being physically healthy inside and out is important, yes, but more so mentally healthy. I know it’s so easy to say oh just stay positive, much easier said than done, but as you get stronger mentally you can filter out those negative thoughts. It’s OK to feel ALL the feels, then process them, learn, and move forward. I will always keep it real, stay true to myself and be authentic on SM and in my personal life as well. I’m far from perfect and that’s ok because I don’t want to be perfect. I accept my flaws. I challenge you to do the same. The people that belong in your life, they will come and they will stay and love you unconditionally.

32

33

I have always had a passion for health, wellness and helping others. My main career is in the medical field. I’m a certified radiology technologist nationally and here in California. I specialize in pediatrics, and I worked at one of the largest Children’s hospital in California for about 8 years. I’ve always lived an active lifestyle. Growing up, I trained in dance and was on a competitive dance team. I also specialized in ballet and jazz style dance. During college, I knew I wanted to have a career in the medical field to help others that are ill and in need of medical assistance. After dedicating my time to my career for several years, I had my two sons. I managed to juggle being a mother, having a career, and also taking the time for myself doing the things that are important to live a healthy lifestyle, like staying active and working out. I enjoyed kick boxing classes and any other outdoor activities to stay active. After having my second son, I told myself I wanted to be and feel strong physically, so I started to lift weights. I didn’t have a personal trainer, but I did some research online and started with the basic weight training exercises. Yes it was intimidating

34

at first going into the gym to the weight section seeing all the other people working out. I didn’t really know what I was doing at first, but I knew it was going to be worth the try! I got over that fear within a few weeks of consistent weight training. I was gaining confidence and focusing on my form and the type of exercises I was doing to target each muscle group. I started posting my workouts, recipes and nutrition tips on my very small personal Instagram page. Before I knew it other health, wellness, and fitness pages from all over the world were sharing my content on their pages and my platform grew and grew! I was approached by a local coach to do bikini fitness competitions, so I agreed and gave it a try. I competed in three very large competitions in California in about a years’ time. Although I learned a lot from competing, {like discipline, proper form when weight training and important daily nutrition information} I decided that the competing lifestyle was not for me or sustainable long term.

35

37

Personally I feel like the extreme diets while competing for women can do more harm than good. I think it’s important to live a well balanced lifestyle, not tracking every calorie you ingest everyday. It takes several trial and error phases to see what works for you and how to reach your goals realistically. As I was becoming more confident in the gym and seeing results, it was important to me to share with others on my social media platform to help as many people out there possible. I have worked with many great health and wellness companies out there including a sponsorship with a woman’s supplement line called NLA for Her. It was an honor to travel around the world, meet people in person at many fitness expos and share my tips and personal story. Although it felt great to help others, I was personally going through some tough times. I found myself in a very toxic and abusive relationship. Things spiraled out of control and got worse and worse. Going to the gym, staying active, being a good mother to my two boys and helping others are the things that truly saved me during the dark times. I knew that giving up was never an option. I had to stay strong mentally as I finally decided enough was enough and I deserved better than being with someone that was abusive and not supportive.

38

My advice to anyone feeling stuck in the same situation, is that it’s important to have self love, to know that things will get better and it’s ok to walk away and close doors to people and things that no longer serve you and make you a better person. There are many support groups out there to help with anyone feeling alone, scared and stuck. It’s my purpose and goal to eventually do outreach programs to help women gain the knowledge and strength both mentally and physically to have the courage to walk away from things and people that are toxic and not healthy.

39

40

For me personally, being strong doesn’t mean being able to lift the heaviest weights. Being strong means you have the capability to control your mind and watch your thoughts. It means being strong even during hardships and struggles. I’m sure many of you can relate to that, and it’s how you handle those tough times that will determine the outcome. I always try to stay positive no matter what I’m going through. I found myself in a very scary situation a few years ago that tested my strength both mentally and physically, and it forever changed my life. It’s difficult to talk about even now, but I feel it’s so important to share my story so it can hopefully help any of you that are struggling out there. I was a victim of an attempted kidnapping at gunpoint. I had a stalker that followed me home and attempted to kidnap me while holding a gun to me. He didn’t want my car, purse, or other belongings, he wanted to take me. I knew in that second that I had no other choice but to fight for my life. I managed to fight the attacker off me and I’m so thankful I did because who knows where I’d be today?!

41

42

I was strong enough mentally and physically to escape with no injuries from such a scary situation and I owe it all to gaining confidence from lifting weights and training in the gym! I told myself in that very moment that I could escape and nothing was going to stop me. To this day I’m on high alert but I never let that incident knock me down, and my whole perspective on life has changed. I try to cherish each day positively and live in the moment because you never know what tomorrow brings. STAY STRONG, STAY POSITIVE, and always love and believe in yourself.

Home Made Food WITH SPECIAL GUEST, MONIKA FIELDS INTERNATIONAL COOKING

Monika’s International cooking tells a story of European cultures. Her love of cooking was inherited to her through many generations in her family. When Monika prepares something wonderful to eat, you know it will be an experience worthy of conversations, long after the food is gone! Monika’s favorite stories that she clearly tells through her delectable dishes are that of her wonderful and tight knit family, and also from the beautiful land in which she descends from, Rosenheim, Germany. Rosenheim is full of history dating back to the 13th century. It is located in the stunning Upper-bavarian Alpine Foothills in the state of Bavaria, not far from the Austrian border. Monika is sharing a slice of her Germany with us in this wonderful (and easy) dish just for BodyScape Magazine readers, German potato salad. Enjoy!

Monikas International Cooking @Monikasinternational Monika’s International Cooking Monikasinternationalcooking@gmail.com

German Potato Salad INGREDIENTS: 5 pounds of golden potatoes 1 European seedless cucumber 1 bunch of green onion (about ¾ a cup of chopped green onion) ½ cup of extra virgin olive oil 1-2 tsp of vegetable bouillon seasoning (powder) Salt and pepper ½ cup of white vinegar INSTRUCTIONS: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

Boil potatoes with skin for 20-30 minutes or until potato is almost soft. Rinse potato under cold water for 30 seconds. While potatoes are still warm remove the skin. Cut potato in half and cut it again in half, then cut across to form 1-inch cubes. Add to a big bowl and right away while potatoes are still warm add ½ cup of olive oil, ½ cup of vinegar, and season it with 1 tsp. of vegetable bouillon. Grate a whole cucumber with skin attached. Add a little salt to the cucumber in order to releases more liquid. Let sit for 5 minutes. After that take a kitchen towel or paper towel and place the grated cucumber on to the paper towel and squeeze the whole liquid out. Then add grated cucumber to boil. Add ¾ to 1 cup of chopped green onion to the bowl. Season with a little more vegetable bouillon, salt, black pepper, and vinegar to your liking. Add more vinegar if needed. If salad is too dry add more olive oil.

This German potato salad tastes even better the next day. Store in the refrigerator for up to three days.

Capturing the cover By PictureGroove Photographer and BodyScape Magazine Publisher

Sarah Lyons Glabman Behind the scenes images courtesy of Jez Noble @Jezco_Images I was contacted by my former client, Theresa Miller earlier this year. She and I did some amazing shoots together back in 2014 and 2015. The first one was in Vegas in the scorching summer sun, and the second one was in Utah in the snow. (She looked amazing as a snow bunny, by the way.) Theresa and I caught up on a ton of just life in general. She informed that she has a big story to tell, and wanted to get it out there through the vehicle of BodyScape Magazine. Well, who am I to say no? Theresa has a MASSIVE following on Instagram of well over one million loyal followers. It was a perfect fit for the both of us.

59

One thing people MAY or may NOT know about me, is that I am extraordinarily selective when I choose a makeup artist for my shoots, especially the covers of BodyScape Magazine. For this shoot in particular, amidst the massive scare of Covid-19, Jessica Brennan was the perfect fit, AND available to work the day of the shoot.

Having a studio in Scottsdale, Arizona has really elevated what I can do for my clients. When I knew Theresa would be flying in for the shoot, she was all set within the studio with a place to stay, a fully equipped kitchen, and more. It’s a very convenient place to stay for out of town clients, AND makes for a sweet shoot spot as well!

60

Jessica understands what I am going for right out of the gates. We always discuss the model I’ll be photographing before the shoot happens, so that my team is fully prepared. Timing is impeccable with Jessica, which is SUPER important to me. Inside of an hour and 15 minutes, Jessica can knock out a FULL glam and hair look. If the glam session takes longer than 2 hours, it cuts in to the shoot schedule, and chances are, I won’t be working with that makeup artist again. That is of course, unless we are going for some VERY specific costume look with props etc., but those shoots are few and far between.

For the cover look in particular, my lighting setup was very commercial. What that means is that there is a lot of light, coming at the model from a lot of directions to create a clean and crisp image. The makeup must out-stand the lighting. And a lot of the time, I don’t know what kind of lighting setup I’m going to use until the model comes out in her “cover” outfit! It was a no-brainer when Theresa walked out in the red, black and white number she is wearing on the cover… PERFECTION!

61

I love the dutch braids, bright eyes and big lashes that Jessica mastered on this shoot. It is a sporty, clean fresh and sexy look that really captured Theresa’s “Strong Mind. Strong Body.” message that is so important to her. You can find Jessica on Instagram @JessicaBrennanBeauty and you can also se her website, JessicaBrennanBeauty.com
