Administration

O

ne of the tasks required in the WCEA Accreditation was to create or revisit the Integral Student Outcomes, or ISOs of the school. Previously, these outcomes were known as Expected Student Learning Results (ESLRs). The major shift from ESLRs to ISOs was that the outcomes should be more about who the students are as opposed to what they can do. A committee of the faculty received training and engaged in a process to build on the ESLRs to produce our new ISOs. Each month in Sharing the Pride, we will focus on one particular ISO. INTEGRAL STUDENT OUTCOMES A Bishop Gorman graduate is an individual formed as a disciple of Jesus Christ who possesses attributes of the values shared by all GAELS, which are:

from the DESK of Dean Rivera Welcome back Class of 2019! As we begin our second semester together I wanted to congratulate and thank each of you for your generous spirit of giving during the winter blanket drive. For the second year in a row we were able to win the class competition by donating over 500 blankets to the Las Vegas Rescue Mission. Additionally, other members of our class elected to support the Las Vegas Arthritis Foundation by participating in the Jingle Bell Run at Tivoli Village bright and early on December 10th. That said, I would like to remind everyone that 50 service hours should be completed by the end of this semester. Thus, for those of you who are now driving or will be driving in the immediate future, please remember that your completed service hours will determine where you will park as an 11th grade student. In closing, GET INVOLVED! Make time to attend the school’s upcoming Club Fair on February 1 and reflect upon the recent invitations extended to you from our campus ministers and activities director to experience the various extracurricular activities designed to enhance your spiritual, social, and personal growth.

Collectively, they picked up 300lbs of trash/debris and 125lbs of recyclable materials from Hole 33 at Lake Mead National Recreational Area!! Club moderator, Mr. Devlin was very proud of the Environmental Club members for their hard work and said that the club plans to visit the lake again to do another cleanup!

Meet Amanda Adolfo, an outstanding member of the Class of 2017. Amanda is a tennis athlete, a very talented student, and an active member of the National Honor Society. However, to many hospital-bound children, she is something like an angel. Several times each week, Amanda visits these children in their hospital rooms, talks with them and reads stories to them individually. When she departs, she leaves the book with the child as a gift and as a remembrance of the pleasant time she has spent with each child. She often makes more than one hundred such visits each month. Amanda is the face of Bedtime Books, the nonprofit organization that brings some joy into the lives of many bedridden children in Clark County hospitals. An illness and a hospital can be scary situations for anyone, but for children it can be even more devastating, particularly in the case of long-term or very serious illness. The mission of Bedtime Books is to support children receiving intensive hospital treatment while promoting literacy. Bedtime Books was created by Lauren Willmore ’15 as a result of her own experience as a patient at a young age and the comfort she received from hearing her favorite story before falling asleep.

Amanda continues this ministry that has become a tradition. The Bishop Gorman chapter of the National Honor Society helps to sponsor Bedtime Books by collecting books for children – new and gently used – that can be used by Amanda in her hospital visits and to provide a library of children’s books in area hospitals for the use of families. Just bring new or gently used children’s books to Room 309 and Amanda will make sure that they will brighten the lives of children. Amanda is a fine example of the Bishop Gorman tradition of compassion and service to our community.

Mr. Sayre and class are thankful for their 5th MITE BOX VICTORY!

RILEY FOLEY BLANKET DRIVE

Las Vegas Rescue Mission gladly picked up our nearly 2,000 blankets from Bishop Gorman! Many people stayed warm this holiday season due to the generosity of our students, staff, and families. As a junior, Riley Foley ’06, saw the need for blankets for the homeless of Las Vegas. Bishop Gorman gladly continued doing for others, just as Riley had envisioned. Our sophomore Class of 2019 donated the highest number of blankets this year, and they were treated to a continental breakfast on the first day of exams in December! We thank everyone involved in this project and the hundreds of people who donated blankets. God Bless You All!

In late 2016, the generosity of Bishop Gorman’s student body was once again on display as a typical Mite Box Tuesday turned into a bonanza for students in the Amazon Basin. A whopping $2,000 was raised and will be used to support four schools that are part of CONAPAC’s Adopt-a-School program that operates near Iquitos, Peru. CONAPAC is a Peruvian non-profit that has, for over 25 years, provided basic educational supplies for students that attend small schools along both the Amazon and Napo rivers. Iquitos is the capital of Loreto, Peru’s poorest province or state. The national government builds the schools and staffs them with teachers, but lacks the additional resources to provide personal school supplies such as paper, pencils, pens, folders, and workbooks. Gorman’s Cultural Geography teacher, Mr. Thompson, has participated in the Adopt-a-School program since he first visited the region in 2000. Mr. Thompson enlisted the help of his freshman students to help spread the word about the Mite Box collection for this project. They also created posters illustrating Bishop Gorman and Las Vegas that were mailed along with letters to CONAPAC’s US partner, the Detroit Zoological Society, in late December. In late April or early May BGHS students will be treated to return letters, artwork, maps, and pictures from their adopted schools. In addition to the four schools that received supplies on behalf of the Gaels, the CONAPAC Amazon Library will be given $300 to support a program on its wish list. This amazing facility supports afterschool enrichment activities such as technology and language programs for students. The library sponsors a yearly spelling bee and struggles to support field trips for its students. The funds donated by Gorman students will go a long way in a region in desperate need. Mr. Thompson has experienced the good works of CONAPAC first-hand. His students have not only adopted schools in past years, but he has also traveled to Peru more than once to participate in the actual delivery of the school supplies and would like to thank every student, faculty, and staff member who donated to this worthy cause.

Thank you Gaels!

The Power of the Pen: Winning Writers

Toni Lacandalo, Franklin Licos, Grace Lipparelli, Chase Lopez, Maddie Lower, Jonathon McSwain, Venus Melvin, Anthony Pace, Kaitlyn Paez, Brooke Pensivy, Nicholas Pero, Felicia Pilcher-Hebron, Dominic Proctor, Halle Robins, Norina Romo, Giacomo Silvestri, Brandi Sloane, Kristiana Streuber, Francesca Tabora, Justice Watson, and Brianna Wiens. Congratulations to the 44 Gorman authors who are to be published for their poetry in Creative Communication’s Fall 2016 Anthology. The majority of students who enter this online journal do not win, but this year’s class of seniors, according to alumna-teacherauthor, Christi Thomas-McEachern, “...is budding with creative writers who possess a keen ear for nuance and an eye for editing.”

The published seniors include: Mark Bautista, Daniel Breslin, Hannah Borgel, Avery Boser, Sarina Camacho, Delaney Carlovsky, Cameron Cieluch, Cameron Cox, Hagan Crear, Jalynne Decker, Cobie DeLeon, Alexis Dunne, Dara Franceschi, Evan Freudenberger, Alexandra Gex, Isabel Gomez, Jessica Goodman, Andrew Grierson, Carter Hall, Trevor Henry, Benjamin Howell, Ariana Jensen,

Many of these authors plan to purchase this anthology as a gift to their parents. Their investment in a Bishop Gorman education has paid dividends, truly evident through this contest’s recognition.

Congratulations Gaels! 5
