Administration The late spring and early summer is always a time when those in Tornado Alley have their eyes to the sky. On May 20 an EF5 tornado with top wind speeds estimated at 210 miles per hour struck Moore, Oklahoma. The school reached out to the principal of Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School in Oklahoma City, David Morton, to inquire as to how the Gaels could help. Mr. Morton relayed that the damage was devastating and that initial reports indicated the cost would exceed that of the EF5 tornado that hit Moore in 1999. Student families as well as faculty families from both Bishop McGuinness as well as Mount St. Mary were affected. Morton indicated that the need for aid was great.
to Oklahoma
Demonstrating solidarity with those in need and desiring to help families directly, Bishop Gorman conducted a special Mite Box collection May 22-24 that would go directly to help these families. Upon the announcement of the Mite Box collection, a Bishop Gorman parent called in with a very unique offer: she wanted to double whatever contributions the school collected. Christy Molasky said “This is very close and dear to my heart because it is where I grew up, rode my bike and cruised Main Street on Friday nights after the football games. I grew up in Oklahoma and I actually graduated from Moore High School.” With student, parent, faculty, and staff participation as well as the matching funds, the school collected $25,524,50. Bishop Gorman sent half of the contribution total to each school so that aid could be given directly. The money will help those who were impacted by both the May 20 Moore tornado as well as those who were impacted by the second round of tornadoes that struck the metro Oklahoma City area on May 31.

Best of luck to you both!
Recycling Your School Supplies Four years ago Erica Korbel, ’15 saw there was too much waste by her peers in middle school when it came to the end of the year and all the left over school supplies. It was then that she decided she would do something to recycle rather than throw things out. She placed collection bins throughout her school for the students to put their unwanted school supplies. She then spent many weeks emptying them of papers, cleaning them up, and putting them in boxes to be donated to the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth. This endeavor has grown and expanded to BGHS where she has enlisted the help of fellow student volunteers. Erica hopes that her recycling effort, Students United in Recycling School Supplies, will continue to expand. She hopes to collaborate with more schools so that it can continue even after she goes away to college.

Gaels Race For The Cure Bishop Gorman Gaels helped to make this year another successful Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure! We thank you for your dedication and commitment and for getting up early on May 4th to come out and celebrate the wins, honor the losses and join thousands of others in the community as we continue to show this disease that while we may not have it beat yet, the fight still goes on!
Givingin Back Creative Ways!
On Saturday, April 20th, nearly 200 BGHS students, parents, alumni, and siblings worked for hours and hours at Catholic Charities to give the men’s homeless shelter a brand new look. Mrs. Lora Feely and Ms. Amy Dawson, from the Bishop Gorman Art Department, joined forces with Mrs. Susie Portz to tackle several projects that ultimately benefit some of our many homeless in Las Vegas. Art students and teachers arrived early to sketch a multitude of beautiful settings on the walls of the shelter. When the larger group of volunteers arrived, they began filling in the creative paintings, assembling over 200 food bags that were delivered to men who spend their days diligently looking for work, and putting together nearly 200 toiletry bags that will be delivered to homeless teens of Las Vegas on an upcoming Friday. Several teachers and administrators from Gorman were also present and worked tirelessly alongside the students. Additionally, a good number of volunteers worked to create three completely portable sleeping mats. These mats are woven out of plastic bags that are not recycled, therefore, utilizing something that would be trashed to provide a bed for someone in need.

Administrators are on campus throughout the summer should you require immediate assistance, or you can contact the counseling secretary at 476-4045. SCHEDULE CHANGES: We are pleased to say it is another record breaking year for enrollment. With that being said, we need to mention a couple things: At this time there will be NO schedule changes and/or teacher requests! The only time a change will be able to be made is if there is a mistake or you need a level change. For example, if you took a summer school course and it is listed on your fall course list or if you’re dropping a level. The master schedule is complete and the classes are very full. Quote of the Month: “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” John Quincy Adams
I have finished my junior year. What can I do over the summer to prepare for the college application process? Applying to college is exciting… and time consuming. Starting early is a wonderful way to make the process enjoyable. Here are some items to review over the summer before your senior year: 1) If you have not taken the ACT or SAT test, or plan to take either test again, review the test date options and decide which date(s) work for you. 2) If you are travelling over the summer, consider visiting a college or two near your destination. Even if the closest college is one you don’t think you will consider, touring various types of institutions (large, small, private, public) will help you to narrow down your options. 3) Reflect on your high school experience thus far and add to or begin your resume. You can update the resume on your Naviance Family Connection page and use this information when completing your college applications. 4) Research what majors you want to consider and start to build a list of possible colleges. Naviance Family Connection has tools to help you determine your interests and research your options. 5) Start writing your essay. See the Essay section of the 2013/2014 College Planner/Calendar to help you jumpstart the process!
Congratulations to Creative Writing Club member Nicole Mirkovic ’15! She won a poetry award that has earned her the right to be published in Creative Communications this June.
