HONOR SOCIETY continued from page 1 justice and evangelization. In addition, the Church teaches us that Catholic schools should be distinguished by certain specific marks or characteristics. The Aquinas Society organically supports and builds upon those distinctive characteristics by placing students in positions of leadership toward achieving a specifically Catholic worldview.”
Michelle Healy, Faculty Co-Moderator of the Aquinas Society is enthusiastic about the opportunities for student growth in leadership and development, “The Aquinas Society will allow members to develop as leaders in faith, values and academics. We hope that this society will bring to the forefront the importance of our Catholic faith on the whole, as well as emphasize the rich traditions of Catholicism.”
John Paul Manfredi, Faculty Co-Moderator of the Aquinas Society explains, “The Aquinas Society recognizes those students on our campus who exhibit exemplary Catholic values. It will serve to highlight the theological achievements of our students on an academic level as well as acknowledge their commitment to service and the promotion of Catholic spirituality.”
Future activities will include the sponsorship of various speaker series, promotion of service initiatives, as well as the gradual assumption of leadership in the liturgical life of the school. Students interested in applying to the Aquinas Society for induction in Fall 2013, should pick up an application from any Theology teacher, or from the Campus Ministry office.

weaving for the homeless
Do you know what happens to the plastic bags (grocery, Target, the mall, etc.) that you put in your recycling bins? For most of them, Republic Services sorts them out and throws them away. Two Bishop Gorman sophomores, Brandon Wulff ’15 and Alex Perron ’15, have come up with a much better idea. They are making plastic bags into sleeping mats for homeless teens and adults. It is estimated that there are
6300+ homeless teens in Las Vegas. Alex and Brandon have built two looms to weave the mats and have plans to make more. The mats use 400+ bags each and take about 17 hours to make. This includes cutting and looping the bags into “plarn” (plastic yarn) then weaving the plarn into strong but lightweight 6’x3’ mats with good insulating properties. The mats have elastic loops woven in to keep the mats

rolled tightly when not in use and a carrying handle braided from more bags. Students will be able to help in numerous ways. Bins are available in Campus Ministry to place donated bags and a school wide drive is coming soon. After school, students will be able to earn service hours by cutting bags and making plarn. If anyone wants to help with the actual weaving of the looms (a very simple process), see Brandon or Alex for times they plan to work on them. This is one more way that our Bishop Gorman community is reaching out to the homeless teens of Las Vegas. So don’t throw away or “recycle” your plastic bags. Send them with your student to help the less fortunate in our community.
Matthew 25 Helps Out! Every week our student run Matthew 25 Board meets to review applications and determine where to distribute our Mite Box funds. Here is a listing of SOME of those we were able to help:
*A single father and his 10 month-old son *Medical bills for an 11 year-old boy with a seizure disorder *A 4 year-old cancer patient *A woman and her three year-old son who just lost her husband to illness *An elderly woman who needed food for her pantry *A family who could not pay the funeral expenses for their son *A social worker who is battling cancer *A single mother of three who lost her job a few months ago *The 23 year-old daughter with bone cancer and her family of five *An elderly woman who suffered abuse from her son and his spouse *A single 66 year-old woman needing 11 medications regularly *A woman caring for her cancer-stricken mother and her four year-old son *A 30 year-old wheelchair dependent mother of five children *A hospice patient being cared for by her daughter and family *Countless families who needed help with the Nevada Energy bill *Countless more who needed assistance with rent and/or food Many of these recipients have sent heartfelt “thank you” notes to us, and they are shared with our students. Please continue to support our Mite Box program and it will be able to continue to make a difference. BRING A BUCK for Mite Box!!

College Explorations The JET Tour is coming to Bishop Gorman High School on Monday April 29th. Eleven of the 28 Jesuit Universities will be here to meet you. This will be set-up in a college fair format on the 2nd floor of the Athletic Training Center in Ryan Hall. The fair will begin promptly at 7:00 AM and will end by 8:30 AM. To attend the fair, students will need to sign up in Naviance and follow the directions to obtain a class pass. Parents are also invited to attend with their student. Whether you are a senior making final enrollment decisions or just beginning your college search, this is a great opportunity to connect directly with college admissions representatives and to learn what each school has to offer! If you have any questions please call Mr. McAllister in the College Counseling Office 702-476-4052.

T
he Art Department had a special visitor on Friday, March 8th. Ms. Samuels’ daughter, Samantha Samuels, gave a presentation to the visual arts and computer science students about art careers at Pixar Studios. Samantha, a Production Assistant on the Academy Award winning, “Brave”, and Production Coordinator on the upcoming “Monsters University” due out this summer, inspired the Bishop Gorman students by showing animated storyboards, and developmental stages of animation in feature-length movies. Samantha encouraged the art students to continue practicing their drawing and computer graphic skills. Using employee testimonials and detailed visuals, she described the numerous artist positions on any given animated feature film. According to Ms. Samuels, there are plenty of talented kids at Bishop Gorman who could very possibly fill future positions at Pixar. Even though many of the students had to trek to the ATC in the pouring rain, it was a fun event for all.
Honors Human Physiology students were fortunate to participate in a field trip to Touro University. Students explored the Gross Anatomy Lab where they were able to hold a human brain and heart. In the Nursing Skills Lab, students practiced intubating “patients.”
CALLING ALL BOOKS AND UNIFORMS! This field trip was an excellent opportunity for our BGHS students to explore a career in the Health Services field.
Now that we are coming into the final stretch of the school year, PLEASE remember that we will recycle all of your student’s uniforms and books! As you clean out closets and find uniforms that are no longer needed, just send them to Campus Ministry and we will be certain to give them to other Bishop Gorman families. This is one way we can really help each other out!

Gaels’ winning season
2013-2014
The winter sports season was another successful one for Bishop Gorman athletics. The wrestling team made big strides under first year coach Ricky Lundell. Look for the wrestling team to have a strong season next year as they are working hard already. The men’s and women’s bowling teams had good years and won several matches. Despite the fact that the women’s basketball team had six freshmen playing, they still had a solid year. The Lady Gaels beat Centennial twice in dramatic fashion to win the Sunset Southwest League Title. The team advanced to the State Tournament with a win over Canyon Springs in the playoffs. They also won a close battle with Liberty in the State Semi Final game, before falling to State Champion Reno High School in the Finals. Congratulations to Tonishia Childress ’13 and April Rivers ’13 on four successful years playing for the Lady Gaels Varsity team. They were both just recently named to the All-State Team as well.

The men’s basketball team capped off a 29-3 season with a 69-43 victory over Centennial High School in the State Championship at the Orleans Arena. It was the fourth time the Gaels beat high powered Centennial this year to capture back to back titles. It was also the fourth state championship for the team in the last five years. The team is currently ranked nationally in all polls and is #9 in Prep Nation and #11 in Max Preps. Congratulations to Stephen Zimmerman ’15, Rashad Muhammad ’13, and Noah Robotham ’14 who were all named to the All-State Basketball Team. Treyson Kennedy ’13 also had a big year for the team, earning all-league honors. Rounding out the starting five was senior Austin Guinn ’13, who gave the Gaels solid minutes all year long and served as one of the team Captains with Noah Robotham and Treyson Kennedy.
February 6th was a big day at Bishop Gorman as 17 student athletes signed their letters of intent to play college athletics next year. It brought the total number of athletes who have signed this year in the class of 2013 to 25. Look for several more of our seniors to make their college choices in April. he Spring Fashion Affair was a great way for our Gorman girls to get together for a day full of fun & fashion and with good reason! On Saturday March 2nd, nearly 100 parents, alumni, & friends gathered at Saks Fifth Avenue to enjoy drinks & treats, mini-makeovers, shopping, and a real runway fashion show featuring the latest trends for Spring, including prom dresses modeled by our students.
The best part of the day? Proceeds from a portion of the event sales were generously donated back to Gorman students! A very special thanks to our event sponsor, Saks Fifth Avenue and all of the raffle donors: The Capitol Grille, Magnolia Lane, Tease Boutique Salon, Grimaldi’s Pizzeria, Sara Buckley, Alexus’ Nail Bar & Genevieve Wylubski. We hope to make this another Gorman tradition!
