Building an online business with your hobby

Building an Online Business with Your Hobby A lot of people ask me how to build an online business and the first thing I always tell them is to think of something that they like to do for fun. There’s a huge advantage to building a business based on something that you choose to spend your free time on – it turns work into play and you’ll be investing in something that you already have good knowledge on. It could be anything; it could be biking, photography, dogs, or plant care. And while it may already be a good idea to have any kind of business based on your interests, having an online business removes a huge part of the financial risk. There are a lot of opportunities for putting up a business; so why put one up in the internet? Because an online business gives you access to thousands or even millions of people at the click of a button and you won’t need to take out a huge, high risk loan from the bank to do it. You can start by simply putting up your own website. In your website, make sure that you are clearly stating your unique selling point and that you have high quality copies and content. In any online venture, content is king. Also, it is important for you to start building an email list right off the bat so be sure to have an opt-in form in your website. And just like that, you’ve taken the first step to turning your hobby into an online business. So you’ve looked into how to build an online business, you’ve put up a website, and you’ve snooped at your competition’s websites too. You have a clear product or service that you’re offering to your customers. What’s next? The next step is to market yourself shamelessly. Create a Facebook fan page and a Twitter account so that you can tell everyone about your site. Add the website in directories and get yourself onto relevant forums. Find related websites and join the discussion while leaving your website address for other people to find. Be relentless; because in the internet business, it never hurts. But steer clear of being too pushy or crass; there are rules and since the internet is a very social environment, you need a good reputation to help build your brand. Finally, don’t be afraid to close a sale. Let people know that there is a need for your product. Steer clear of being arrogant by asking for testimonials from customers or presenting infographics. Keep in mind that your goal is to create a need for your product, not just a “want”. What you want them to feel is a sense of urgency that will take them to the next step which is purchasing what you have to offer. And if you don’t get that sale, never fear; once you’ve got their email, you can keep in touch via a newsletter and updates. You can reel them in sooner or later.
