How to Publish an eBook for Beginners One of the toughest parts about writing an eBook is the process of actually publishing it. There’s the formatting part and then choosing the cover art and choosing where to distribute your books, endless details that can get pretty intimidating. Believe it or not, once you’re done writing your eBook, you’ve actually already done the hard part. Actually publishing the book isn’t as complicated as it first seems. And once you’ve gone through the whole process once, it’ll be easy as pie the next time you do it. The first step to learning how to publish an eBook isn’t formatting it which is what most people think but choosing where to distribute it. Because more than 80% of eBook readers shop at Amazon (and own a Kindle), authors don’t really feel they’re disadvantaged by sticking to this tried and tested shopping website. On the other hand, it never hurts to reach out to a wider readership and some of the best eBook online markets include Lulu, Smashwords, and Kobo. It’s important to decide where you want to distribute your eBook because the where also decides the how. These websites have pretty similar requirements in terms of formatting but pay special attention to what you can and can’t do in Word (headers are particularly troublesome). Once you’ve formatted your eBook for the distribution website of your choice (don’t forget the clickable table of contents and the ‘welcome’ pages – title page, author’s page with social media, and book information and rights), you can choose the right cover art. A lot of authors rush through this part because it’s basically the last step before getting published but don’t forget that your cover is your first chance to make a good first impression on your readers. Don’t skimp; check out online stock photos and choose high quality, high resolution photos that match the title of your book. This is where a little Photoshop know-how comes in handy. To format the photo correctly for a cover, just look for canvas size in Photoshop (under the Image tab) and change the pixel size to what is indicated on the website for the format. You can also play with the image size to get the cover that you want. Don’t forget to add your title; it’s best to stick to easily readable fonts like Calibri or Arial. The text or Word document file and the cover image are usually updated separately and are automatically put together by the distribution website. You can actually update both the eBook itself and the cover art which means that you can continue to improve your product. And if the cover art isn’t as fantastic as a small button image or isn’t as readable, it won’t be the end of the world. So there you have it; a few tips and guidelines to publishing your eBook online. Remember, learning how to publish an eBook isn’t limited to just formatting your book and uploading it.
