Businesses are evolving post lockdown

Even as coronavirus cases continue to increase significantly, many business have reopened across the country. All of these businesses have made notable changes in operations to promote social distancing among workers and employees.

While reopening after several weeks of lockdown has made them desperate for business, employers have ensured that all coronavirus-related precautions are in place, including social distancing and sanitation.

The Indian government has tried to protect its most vulnerable enterprise group—the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector—from the fallout of covid-19 by redefining what constitutes such enterprises, and providing a relief package under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan.

A big challenge for policymakers, as also other stakeholders such as lenders to these MSMEs, is the lack of adequate signals from ground-level data, both structured and unstructured. Policy measures such as debt moratoriums and the government’s underwriting of MSME loans may need to evolve for greater efficacy in the post-covid era, with a combination of structured and unstructured data serving as a basis for decisions.

With Covid-19 unlikely to make an exit in a hurry, many of the current fall back measures may become accepted norms of business — roadshows may be held remotely, renting out huge office space may become passé.

Technology is available to allow employees to operate from home. One definite outcome of the disruption is greater stress on technology, both in services and manufacturing sectors.

In electrified automobiles Infineon’s HybridPACK™ family of power modules play an important role as the connection between the battery system and powertrain. They convert the battery’s direct current into the alternating current that drives the electric motor. They also convert the alternating current recuperated when braking into direct current, which charges the vehicle’s battery. Reducing the energy losses in these processes enables both longer ranges and smaller batteries.

Infineon to become CO2 neutral by 2030 Infineon is already making a valuable contribution to climate protection today. However, we know: we can do even better.

This is why we as a company defined binding reduction targets in 2020 for the first time. Infineon will be CO2-neutral by 2030. This goal applies to Infineon‘s own greenhouse gas footprint and includes not only direct emissions, but also indirect emissions tied to electricity and heat. By as early as 2025, the following measures are to achieve a 70 percent reduction in emissions compared to 2019: • Continue and improve voluntary measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by exhaust air purification • Continue improvement of energy efficiency and migrate to the most modern process technologies in manufacturing • Switch to 100 percent green electricity with guarantees of origin in the medium-term • Promote electromobility by expanding the charging infrastructures at our sites • Purchase CO2 certificates (for emissions which cannot be viably avoided) with a high quality standard, in support of projects with ecological and social benefits

Vital Sign Technologies: Condition-Based Monitoring of the Human Body

Introduction

Vital sign monitoring has extended beyond the boundaries of medical practice and into many areas of our everyday lives. Originally, vital sign monitoring took place in hospitals and clinics under strict medical supervision. Advances in microelectronics have led to cost reduction in monitoring systems, making these technologies more accessible and common in areas such as telemedicine, sports, fitness and wellness, and workplace safety, as well as the automotive market, which is becoming increasingly focused on autonomous driving. Despite this expansion and given the health-related nature of these applications, quality standards remain high.

Vital Signs

Monitoring vital signs involves measuring a series of physiological parameters that can give an indication of the health of an individual. Heart rate is one of the most common parameters, and it can be detected via an electrocardiogram, which measures the frequency of the heartbeat and, above all, its variations. Changes in heart rate tend to be based on activity.

During sleep or when resting, the rhythm is slower, but tends to increase following physical activity, an emotional response, stress, or anxiety.

A heart rate that falls outside the normal range may indicate the presence of a disorder such as bradycardia (when the heart rate is too low) or tachycardia (when it is too high).

Breathing is another key vital sign. The oxygenation level of the blood can be measured using a technique called photoplethysmography (SpO2). Poor oxygenation can be

related to the onset of diseases or disorders affecting the respiratory system. Other vital sign measurements that can provide indications as to a person’s physical condition are blood pressure, body temperature, and skin conductance response.

Skin conductance response, also known as electrodermal response, is closely linked to the sympathetic nervous system, which in turn is directly involved in the regulation of emotional behaviors. Measuring skin conductance provides indications as to the stress, fatigue, mental state, and emotional response of a patient. Additionally, measuring body composition, the percentages of lean mass and fat mass, and the degree of hydration and nutrition provides clear indications as to a person’s clinical status. Lastly, measuring motion and posture can provide useful information on the activity of the subject.

Optical Measurements

Optical measurements go beyond standard semiconductor technology. In order to take this type of measurement, an optical measurement toolbox is required. Figure 1 shows a typical signal chain for optical me asurements. Light sources (generally LEDs) are needed to generate a light signal, which ma y consist of different wavelengths. The combination of se veral wavelengths allows for greater measuring precision. A series of silicon or germanium sensors (photodiodes) are also required to transform the optical signal into an electrical signal, also known as the photocurrent. Photodiodes must respond to the wavelength of the light sour ce with enough sensitivity and line arity. The photocurrent must then be amplified and converted, hence the need for a high performance, energy efficient, multichannel analog front end that can control the LEDs, amplify and filter the analog signal, and perform analog-to-digital conversion with the necessary resolution and accuracy.

Packaging of the optical system also plays a fundamental role. The package is not only a container, but also a s ystem with one or mor e optical windows that can filter outgoing and incoming light, without ex cessive attenuation or reflections that could compromise the integrity of the signal. The optical system package must also accommodate multiple devices including LEDs, photodiodes, and analog and digital processing chips in order to create a compact multichip system. Finally, a coating technology that enables the creation of optical filters is also essential to select the portion of the spectrum that is required for the application and eliminate unwanted signals. The application must function even when exposed to sunlight. If no optical filter is pr esent, the magnitude of the

Analog Devices offers a family of photodiodes and various analog front-ends capable of processing the signal received from the photodiodes and controlling the LEDs. A full optical system is also available, which incorporates LEDs, photodiodes, and front ends into a single device, for example, the ADPD1081.

Biopotential and Bioimpedance Measurements

A biopotential is an electrical signal generated by the effect of the electrochemical activity in our body. Examples of biopotential measurements include the electrocardiogram (ECG) and the electroencephalogram. These detect very low magnitude signals in a frequency band where there are several interferents. As a result, the signal must be amplified and filtered before being processed. ECG biopotential measurements are widely used in vital sign monitoring, and Analog Devices offers several components for this task including the AD8233, the ADAS1000 chip family, and the ADuCM3029.

The AD8233 is designed for wearable applications and can be combined with the ADuCM3029, a system on a chip (SoC) based on Cortex®-M3 technology, to create a complete system. Additionally, the ADAS1000 family, designed for higher end applications, is characterized by low energy consumption.

It is particularly suitable for battery-powered portable devices and it is scalable in terms of power and noise (that is, the noise le vel can be reduced with a proportional increase in power consumption), making it a great integrated solution for ECG systems.

Bioimpedance is another measurement that can give us useful information on our physical state. Impedance measurements provide information regarding our electrodermal activity, the composition of our body, and our state of hydration. Each parameter requires a different measurement technique. The

number of electrodes required for each one and the point at which the y are applied may vary along with the r ange of frequencies used.

Although the techniques may differ, a single front end, the AD5940, can be used for all bioimpedance and impedance measurements. This device provides the excitation signal and the complete impedance measurement chain. Various frequencies can be generated to fulfill multiple measurement requirements. In addition, the AD5940 is designed to work with the AD8233 to create a comprehensive bioimpedance and biopotential reading system, as shown in Figure 2. Other devices for impedance measurement include the ADuCM35x family of SoC solutions, which, in addition to the dedicated analog front end, offer a Cortex-M3 microcontroller, memory, HW accelerators, and communication peripherals for electrochemical sensors and biosensors.

Wearable devices currently available on the market, such as smart bracelets and smart watches, come with various functions for monitoring vital signs. Among the most common are heart rate monitors, pedometers, and calorie counters.

Blood pressure and body temper ature are also often me asured, along with electrodermal activity, changes in blood volume (via photoplethysmography), and other metrics. As the number of monitoring options grows, so does the need for highly integrated electronic components. The ADPD4000 features an extremely flexible architecture and was created to help designers meet this need. It can manage a photometric front end, pilot LEDs, and read photodiodes in addition to providing biopotential and bioimpedance readings. The ADPD4000 is equipped with a temperature sensor for compensation and a switch matrix, which enables the necessary outputs to be piloted and the signals to be acquired, either for singleended or differential voltage signals. The output is selectable and could be single-ended or differential depending on the input requirements of the ADC to which the ADPD4000 is connected. The device can be programmed with 12 different time bands, each dedicated to processing a specific sensor.

Figure 3 summarizes the key characteristics of the ADPD4000 in a few typical applications.

Likewise, varying frequencies are used to measure hydration and to correctly evaluate the intracellular and extracellular fluids.

Since MEMS sensors can detect gravitational acceleration, they can be used to detect activity and anomalies such as an unsteady gait, a fall or a concussion, or even monitor posture when a subject is at rest. In addition, MEMS sensors can be used to supplement optical sensors, as those are subject to movement artefacts; when this occurs, the information from the accelerometer can be used to make a correction. The ADXL362 is one of the most popular devices in the medical field and is the 3-axis acceler ometer with the lowest energy consumption on the market. It is characterized by a programmable measurement range from 2 g to 8 g and a digital output.

which in term was actively increasing current leakage and reducing battery life. The location was coastal and very humid.

Initially the customer tried an acrylic based Conformal Coating but this did not solve the problem as the battery typically discharged within 2-3 months. The customer asked Electrolube for assistance and from our wide range of Conformal Coatings, were able to make several recommendations, DCA, PUC and UVCL. Following extensive field testing, DCA was pronounced as the optimum solution satisfying all requirements including application method and cost. This is just one isolated case study in the vast spectrum of possiblties contained in the IoT.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a platform enabling embedded devices connected to the internet, collect and exchange data with each other. Devices can begin to interact and work with each other, even learning from each other’s experience as humans do. The potential for the IoT and connectivity is endless, as everyday objects can connect and share intelligence (AI – artificial intelligence) and knowledge.

Just one of the huge growth areas for IoT is within Smart Home systems as these encompass a wide variety of applications for the digital consumer. IoT connectivity allows connectivity for areas such as lighting control (on/off/dimmers), voice controlled items, security and locks, garden hydration, energy and water meters, heating, switches, and more.

Smart homes can also utilise a great many different sensors and a key area is within safety and security. For example, optical sensors are used for outdoor security lighting and trigger light fixtures to illuminate gardens at night. Gas sensors, used to detect gas leaks can prove invaluable as security devices. A sensor detecting a gas leak can submit results to a control system in real time and if necessary, shut an entire system down. Smoke sensors are also widely used in domestic environments and act as early warning systems, transferring data quickly enough to save lives. This list of sensors barely scratches the surface of IoT applications and there are many additional ones for consideration such as pressure, light, humidity, gyroscopes and accelerometers, proximity and motion, flow, sound, moisture, image, magnetic; the list of sensors literally goes on and on.

Tethered Inspection UAV Light, Compact Power Supply Increases UAV Payload

The Customer's Challenge

A customer was developing an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) carrying cameras to inspect the decks of incoming ships prior to entering a port.

Primary power for the UAV comes from a ground-based generator and was distributed to the UAV over a 30m tether, enabling it to be on station for many hours at a time, yet carry a significant payload. An onboard battery provided back-up should the primary supply fail. The power solution also needed to support the backup battery and, as the weight of an aircraft increases the payload capability decreases, so the power had to be as light as possible to allow higher carrying capacity.

The Solution

CASE STUDY

To minimize transmission losses due to the resistance of the cable, and reduce the size and weight of the cable itself, a high voltage transmission solution was designed. The supply to the UAV could vary from 160 – 420V depending on load, so six 300 VIN DCM DC-DC Converter Modules were used on the UAV to stabilize the voltage, with each powering one of the rotor motors. Each of these DCMs weighed just 29.2g, and measured 47.91 x 22.8 x 7.26 mm.

The DCM output voltage was adjusted to optimize battery charging and to control for reliable start-up of the motors. High power density, low profile and light weight DCMs ensured the UAV and the tether cable’s size and weight were minimized. With its high frequency zero voltage switching (ZVS) topology, the DCM converter consistently delivers high efficiency across the input line range. When combined with the thermal and density benefits of Vicor’s ChiP packaging technology, the DCM module offers flexible thermal management options without the need for heavy and chunky heat sinks or other thermal management devices.

Take Advantage of Ceramic Capacitors to Boost Power Density and Conversion Efficiency RICH MIRON

Digi-Key Electronics From data servers for the Internet of Things (IoT) to electric vehicles (EVs), designers of power systems remain under constant pressure to achieve higher power density and conversion efficiency. While much of the focus has been on semiconductor switching devices to achieve these improvements, the inherent characteristics of multi-layer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) means they can also play an important role in helping designers meet their design requirements. These characteristics include low losses, high voltage and ripple current handling capabilities, high voltage withstand capability, and high stability over operating temperature extremes.

MLCCs

This article describes the construction of MLCCs and how ceramic capacitors boost power handling in DC and AC rails, while complementing fast switching semiconductors.

It also sheds light on Class I and Class II dielectrics and how they allow miniature MLCCs to serve power systems such as snubbers and resonant converters.

How MLCCs are constructed

MLCCs are monolithic devices built from alternating layers of ceramic dielectric and metal electrodes (Figure 1). The laminated layers in MLCCs are constructed at high temperatures to produce a sintered and volumetrically efficient capacitance device. Next, a conductive termination barrier system is integrated on the exposed ends of the device to complete the connection.

sizes. Additionally, they are more reliable at high-frequency operations. This allows MLCCs to provide the right combination of dielectric, termination system, form factor, and screening.

Still, several issues call for due diligence on the part of designers when choosing ceramic capacitors for high power density applications. For a start, capacitance can be affected by the operating temperature, applied DC bias, and time after last heat. The time after last heat, for instance, can cause a shift in capacitance, which leads to capacitor aging (Figure 2).

(Image source: Kemet) More importantly, the ripples generated by fast switching IGBT or MOSFET semiconductor devices can affect the performance because every capacitor has some impedance and self-inductance. So, it’s imperative that capacitors limit fluctuations as devices like inverters sporadically demand heavy currents, calling for a high ripple current tolerance.

Then there is the capacitor’s effective series resistance (ESR), a vital characteristic that represents the total internal resistance as specified at a given frequency and temperature.

By minimizing the ESR, a designer reduces power loss due to heat generation.

Next, a low effective series inductance (ESL) increases the operating frequency range and allows further miniaturization of ceramic capacitors. Together, a low ESR and a low ESL boost a capacitor’s power-handling capability and minimize the device parasitics. Moreover, they contribute to lower losses, which in turn allow capacitors to operate at high ripple current levels.

Another critical design consideration is the choice of dielectric material. This determines the change in capacitance over temperature (Figure 3). While Class I dielectric materials such as C0G and U2J offer more temperature-stable dielectrics, they have a lower dielectric constant (K). On the other hand, Class II materials like X7R and X5R feature mid-range stability as well as K value while offering much higher capacitance values.

Class I dielectric MLCCs

Kemet’s KC-LINK capacitors such as the CKC33C224KCGACAUTO (0.22 microfarad (µF), 500 volt), the CKC33C224JCGACAUTO (0.22 µF, 500 volt), and the CKC18C153JDGACAUTO (15 nanofarad (nF), 1000 volt) are good examples of Class 1.

They utilize Class 1 calcium zirconate dielectric material that facilitates extremely stable operation with no capacitance loss due to switching frequency, applied voltage, or ambient temperature. The low-loss calcium zirconate dielectric material also minimizes the aging effects because there is no capacitance shift over time.

The KC-LINK capacitors utilize C0G dielectric technology to achieve a very low ESR, and the ability to manage a very high ripple current which is necessary for high power density designs. The high mechanical robustness allows these Class I ceramic capacitors to be mounted without the use of lead frames, which also contributes to extremely low ESL. These ceramic capacitors can operate at very high ripple currents with no change in capacitance versus DC voltage, and negligible change in capacitance versus an operating temperature range of -55°C to 150°C. They are available with capacitance values ranging from 4.7 nF to 220 nF, and voltage ratings spanning from 500 volts to 1,700 volts (Figure 4).

Here, it’s worth noting that KC-LINK capacitors, which are based on Class 1 dielectric material, offer lower on-chip capacitance than equivalently-sized Class 2 capacitors. So, if more capacitance is needed, multiple KC-LINK capacitors can be bonded together into a single monolithic structure to create higher density packaging.

The outcome of this capacitor consolidation is a low-noise solution similar to KC-LINK but with up to 125 percent more capacitance. Kemet's KONNEKT surface mount capacitors, also based on a Class I dielectric material, provide higher capacitance values ranging from 100 picofarad (pF) to 0.47 µF. They retain over 99% of their nominal capacitance at rated voltages and are well suited for timing-critical and applications subject to temperature cycling and board flexure.

MLCCs

However, for fast switching power systems, the higher the operating frequency, the lower the capacitance required to deliver power. This enables lower K ceramic capacitors to replace bulky high capacitance film capacitors, significantly enhancing the power density. These ceramic capacitors come in smaller footprints, so they can be mounted closer to fast switching semiconductors while requiring minimal cooling in high power density applications.

Stacking MLCCs for more capacitance

The KONNEKT ceramic capacitors, including the C1812C145J5JLC7805, the C1812C944J5JLC7800, and the C1812C944J5JLC7805, are created by vertically or horizontally stacking two to four ceramic capacitors while retaining the integrity of the device. The C1812C944J5JLC7800 ceramic capacitor offers a capacitance of 0.94 µF by stacking two devices, while the C1812C145J5JLC7805 ceramic capacitor takes the capacitance value to 1.4 µF with three devices stacked together.

These MLCCs utilize the transient liquid phase sintering (TLPS) material to bond component terminations together and thus create a leadless multi-chip solution. The leadless multi-chip solution makes the capacitor compatible with existing reflow processes. TLPS, a metal matrix composite bond made of copper-tin material, is used as a replacement for solder. It forms a metallurgical bond between two surfaces, in this case, the U2J layers.

The fact that capacitors can be integrated in both orientations minimizes the component footprint and maximizes the bulk capacitance of a stacked MLCC device (Figure 5), allowing KONNEKT ceramic capacitors to achieve the capacitance range previously possible only with Class II dielectric materials such as X5R and X7R.

(Image source: Kemet) In a low-loss orientation, less electrical energy is converted to heat, which in turn improves the energy efficiency and further enhances a capacitor’s power handling capabilities.

The low-loss orientation also lowers both ESR and ESL and thus increases a ceramic capacitor’s ability to handle ripple currents.

The use of TLPS material, combined with an ultra-stable dielectric, enables ceramic capacitors to handle extremely high ripple currents in the hundreds of kilohertz range. For instance, with the C1812C145J5JLC7805 U2J 1.4 μF KONNEKT capacitor, the ESL is 1.6 nanohenry (nH) when mounted in standard orientation, but it reduces to 0.4 nH in low-loss orientation.

Likewise, in low-loss orientation, the ESR is reduced from 1.3 milliohm (mΩ) to 0.35 mΩ, lowering system losses and limiting the temperature rise.

Kemet's U2J KONNEKT surface mount capacitors limit their capacitance change to –750 ±120 parts per million (ppm)/°C across temperatures ranging from –55°C to +125°C. This allows the U2J ceramic capacitor to exhibit a negligible shift in capacitance versus DC voltage, and a predictable linear change in capacitance with respect to ambient temperature.

AC line ceramic capacitors

The ceramic capacitors mentioned in the above sections stabilize and smoothen the voltage and current on DC rails and thus prevent decoupling spikes caused by fast switching.

However, ceramic capacitors are also used in AC line filtering, AC/DC converters, and power factor correction (PFC) circuits.

Here, it’s important to note that AC line ceramic capacitors come in both safety and non-safety rated formats. While the safety rated capacitors suppress electrical noise and

protect designs from overvoltages and transients, higher capacitance/voltage (CV) levels are not available in these safety-certified MLCCs. Non-safety rated AC ceramic capacitors, available in a variety of sizes and CV values, can be used for continuous use in AC line conditions. The CAN series of ceramic capacitors are available in both X7R and C0G dielectrics. The C0G dielectric, as shown in the case of DC link capacitors, exhibits no change in capacitance with respect to time and voltage, and it shows only a negligible change in capacitance regarding ambient temperature.

On the other hand, in ceramic capacitors such as the CAN12X153KARAC7800 and the CAN12X223KARAC7800, X7R exhibits a predictable change in capacitance regarding time and voltage, and features a minimal change in capacitance due to ambient temperature.

The CAN12X153KARAC7800 ceramic capacitor offers a capacitance value of 0.015 µF, while the CAN12X223KARAC7800 device features a 0.022 µF capacitance. Both of these MLCC devices offer a 10% tolerance.

Conclusion

As power delivery systems continue to shrink and pack more power into smaller form factors, MLCCs are playing a crucial role in designs ranging from server power supplies to wireless chargers to power inverters. Solid-State Batteries Will Create a $6Bn Market By 2030

in 2015. Now in 2020, we can see lots of further interests in solid-state batteries, such as the newly developed solidstate batteries based on argyrodite electrolyte by Samsung, and a further $ 200 million investment by Volkswagen on QuantumScape. Besides the companies we just mentioned, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Fisker, Panasonic, Samsung, CATL also get involved in this game.

The market demand for solid-state batteries mainly comes from electric vehicles. Energy storage system, consumer electronics such as smartphones, tablets, laptops are also its targeting markets and the later may come true earlier.

With most of the companies’ mass-production plans, like Japan ~2025-2030, Europe ~2025-2026, mainland China & Taiwan ~2022-1023, it is likely that solid-state batteries will take off around 2025, although small-scale production may happen even earlier. The car plug in market will take the most share (65%) in 2030, followed by smartphone applications.

In solid-state batteries, both the electrodes and the electrolytes are solid-state. Solid-state electrolyte normally behaves as the separator as well, allowing downscaling due to the elimination of certain components (e.g. separator and casing). Therefore, they can potentially be made thinner, flexible, and contain more energy per unit weight/volume than conventional Li-ion. In addition, the removal of liquid electrolytes can be an avenue for safer, long-lasting batteries as they are more resistant to changes in temperature and physical damages that occurred during usage. Solid-state batteries can handle more charge/discharge cycles before degradation, promising a longer lifetime.

IDTechEx has identified solid-state battery technologies including solid polymer electrolyte, as well as other 8 inorganic electrolyte types such as LISICON-like, argyrodites, garnet, NASICON-like, Perovskite, LiPON, Li-Hydride and Li-Halide.

Among them, the material systems based on oxide and sulfide systems stand out, together with the polymer systems, becoming the popular options in the next-generation development.

Many solid polymer electrolytes, in a strict definition, should not belong to solid-state batteries. However, due to their popularity and market acceptance, IDTechEx also included them for benchmarking. Sulfide electrolytes have advantages of high ionic conductivity, even better than liquid electrolytes, low processing temperature, wide electrochemical stability window, etc. Many features make them appealing, being considered by many as the ultimate option. However, the difficulty of manufacturing and the toxic by-product that can be generated in the process make the commercialization relatively slow. IDTechEx has observed that more companies tend to focus more on the oxide system to reach a shorter time of return. This has also been reflected in the market prediction.

Types of Medical Applications

Medical device not only needs to consider operator protection, such as doctor and nurse but also the patient protection. The requirements of the operator and the patient protection are different. Since the health state of a patient and operator is different and the patient normally is in a weaker state, thus a higher level of protection is required for the patient.

Medical device is divided into three types(see below Figure 1) according to the judgment that - whether the medical device is in electrical contact with the patient and how to contact the patient.

Figure 1: Three types of medical applications For those medical devices which do not have direct electrical contact with the patient (type B), it is only considered to provide operator protection, thus such medical devices have lower requirements for power supplies. However, if the medical devices contact the patient’s heart (type CF), which is the most sensitive part of human body, it is considered to provide the highest protection level for the patient, in that case the medical devices have higher requirements for power supplies.

First of all, it is necessary to confirm if a medical device has electrical contact or has the possibility to contact with the patient. If devices which are used in hospitals have direct electrical contact with the patients, who in some cases are in a weak condition, even a small amount of leakage current can have negative effects on the patients. The leakage current of the power supply for medical device must be limited to the lowest specified value. Medical device tends to be more sensitive to electromagnetic interference(EMI) than most of the industrial device. Therefore, the power supply for medical device should meet more stringent EMI standards. The key of the power supply for medical device applications is the safety and reliable insulation between the input and output as any shortcoming in insulation would result in the risk of electric shock. The isolation voltage between the primary and secondary side of the transformer, the safety distance(creepage and clearance) provide measures of insulation. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to leakage current, EMI and reliable insulation when selecting a power supply for a medical device.

Types BF or CF of medical device power supply needs to meet 2x MOPP, while for type B medical devices, it is available to use medical grade power supply which meets 2 x MOOP or industrial power supply.

Ventilator Application Analysis

A ventilator is a device that provides mechanical ventilation by moving breathable air into and out of the lungs, to deliver breaths to a patient who is physically unable to breathe, or breathing insufficiently. Severe patients with pneumonia usually use a ventilator during the treatment process, which is regarded as a life-saving straw and has become an indispensable medical device in clinical treatment. It is increasingly and widely used in the fields of first aid, anesthesia, ICU and respiratory therapy.

Ventilator application diagram is showed as below(Figure 3), it controls the air through inspiratory valve and exhalation valve, and at the meantime detects air flow, pressure, oxygen density etc. in order to give an alarm in time when patient is in abnormal breathing.

Tips for Selecting Power Supplies for Medical Applications

If a medical device is not likely to have electrical contact with patient, it is enough to use a medical grade or industrial grade power supply which is able to provide enough operator protection.

We can follow the below process(Figure 2) to judge the requirements for switching power supply. It shows means of protection(MOP), which includes insulation, air clearance, creepage distances, impedances, and protective earth connections. MOPP refers to means of patient protection, while MOOP refers to means of operator protection.

For mains AC/DC power supply, it must meet universal input voltage range from 85Vac to 264Vac to meet global common ventilator input demands, and provide stable 24Vdc output voltage with high accuracy. At the same time power supply has to be highly reliable whose EMI should comply with EN55011(CISPR11) CLASS B, in order to avoid disturbance to other medical devices. It is available to use a medical grade or industrial AC/DC power supply, all because ventilator itself does not have electrical contact with patient directly so that’s

For DC/DC power supply part, normally the input voltage range is wide from 10.8Vdc to 33Vdc which is compatible with 12Vdc and 24Vdc system. The backup batteries inside the ventilator is used to provide instant power for ventilator so as to ensure it can work normally and continue to help patient breath in case that mains AC/DC power supply is not available when there is a power outage in hospital.

There are several sub-systems in ventilator’s control system, such as blower, valve, flow meter, signal sampling and fan, and all of them need reliable power supply to ensure their reliable operation.

MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY

Blower requirements for power supply are: 24Vdc input, perfect protections, for example, if the blower is stuck and stop working, this power supply’s output is cut off and turns into short circuit protection mode. In addition, when selecting a power supply, its output power should match the blower which is used in the ventilator, from 1A to 3A or greater.

Valve sub-system includes inspiratory valve, exhalation valve, and oxygen valve. For these parts, non-isolated power supplies are available because front AC/DC or DC/DC power supply is already isolated.

The function of flow meter is to detect patient’s breath. Signal sampling system includes temperature sensor and pressure sensor etc. They both require a power supply with high output voltage accuracy and low ripple and noise. Non-isolated DC/DC power supply can be available here but if there is a greater disturbance in the system it is better to use an isolated power supply.

The fan in the system does not have strict requirements for the power supply, generally, a 5W non-isolated power supply is available for this part.

The ETSI Technical Committee on Cybersecurity has recently unveiled a new standard, ETSI EN 303 645 (EN) for cybersecurity in the Internet of Things (IoT).

As more devices in the home connect to the internet, the cybersecurity of the IoT has become a growing concern.

The EN is designed to prevent large-scale, prevalent attacks against smart devices that cybersecurity experts see every day.

By preventing these attacks, the EN represents a huge uplift in baseline security and privacy.

The EN specifies 13 provisions for the security of Internetconnected consumer devices and their associated services.

Water Disinfection - Crystal IS experience: ( reference: Crystal IS application notes) Engineers can leverage highly UV reflective materials to maximize the efficiency of UVC reactors in Water and Air Ducts, to decrease the amount of UV intensity required throughout.

The amount of UVC radiation applied to a given volume over a specific time period needed for disinfection in a particular system is commonly referred to as the required UV Dose. UV Dose is comprised of two factorsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the irradiance of the UVC light and the length of exposure to radiation. The reactor designers consider reactor size and shape, flow rate and the UV power of the system. In systems where there is less flexibility around flow rate, residence time and effectiveness of the UV light becomes a crucial factor. One way is to maximize internal reflection to take full advantage of the UV energy or photons emitted from the light source and increase efficiency.

Table 1 shows the UV reflectivity of standard materials used in disinfection reactors.

Commercial UV disinfection systems use stainless steel, highly resistive to microbial growth. SS has only 20 - 28% reflectance of UV light. Flow cells that contain e-PTFE (expanded PolyTetraFluoroEthylene) provide more than 95% reflectance making the UVC more than three times effective than traditional reactors.

EXAMPLE 1: WATER DISINFECTION REACTOR UV reactors are a mainstay for water treatment facilities and residential appliances designed to disinfect water flowing through a system for safe public consumption.

To illustrate the impact of material reflectivity, Crystal IS examined two reactors with the same dimensions (Figure 1), flow rate and UVC LED arrangement. The total power in the reactor is 200 mW. Reactor 1 was composed of stainless steel while reactor 2 used e-PTFE.

At the center of the reactor 7.5 cm from the end caps, the average irradiance in reactor 1 was 4.5 mW/cm2 whereas in reactor 2 the average was 17 mW/cm2. The radiation patterns in the reactors at the mid-point can be seen in Figure 2.

HVAC systems rely on UV disinfection to inhibit mold growth and reduce energy consumption. Filtration coupled with UV light is commonly integrated into ducts for complete disinfection.

These ducts come in various sizesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the models in this example are based on a duct that is 380 cm wide by 250 cm long.

The 35 LEDs in the system were arranged in a grid pattern to ensure the entire duct was covered with UVC light.

The irradiance was modeled within the duct based on two different materials: duct 1 comprised of a surface having no reflective properties and duct 2 is lined with Alzak Sheet aluminum which has more than 80% reflectance. The increase in reflectance between duct 1 and 2 increased the peak irradiance from 0.2 mW/cm2 to ~0.3 mW/cm2 . In addition, the UV dispersion was more uniform within duct 2, as can be seen in Figure 4a and 4b.

One candidate UV reflector material is an aluminized polymer film having a front surface protective coating without appreciable UV absorption, suitable for indoor applications. Its also most cost effective. Another candidate is electropolished aluminum having an anodized protective coating (Al03). The "semi-specular" material has comparable cost, while "highly specular" material could cost double. Both have questionable outdoor durability. Typically, thin (2-3 pm) oxide layers are used to provide some measure ofabrasion resistance but no protection against moisture or pollutants. Thicker oxide layers (10-50 pm) are usually specified when anodized aluminum is intended for engineering/marine applications, but such layers can affect specular reflectance. Another approach is to apply multilayer dielectric (MLD) protective coats over the oxide layer. Considerable added expense can be incurred by the coating process.

With 5G technology knocking on the doors, a Medical Internet of Things (Medical IoT) is gaining more and more popularity and is soon going to become the new norm. It will extend the connectivity and transmission of health data from the patient to the physician on a regular basis, or immediately and continuously in an emergency. The Medical IoT will make medicine participatory, personalized, predictive and preventive; also known as P4 Medicine.

Successful medical devices and pharmaceutical companies are using engineering simulation and connected patient modeling to develop systems that ensure high reliability, provide data privacy and expedite regulatory compliance.

To make a real impact on healthcare, connected medical devices should capture and interpret relevant and reliable parameters without compromising patient safety and comfort, and deliver insights to physicians with full integrity, readability and security.

Ansys Multiphysics simulations are used in various stages in the design of these devices. One of the applications of these simulations is to evaluate the electromagnetic performance of antennas, sensors etc. Let us look at an example of a neurostimulator, which is placed under the patient’s skin to deliver mild electrical signals that provide pain relief by blocking pain messages before they reach the brain. Unlike oral medications that circulate through the patient’s body, the neurostimulator targets the precise area where pain is experienced. Patients can try a neurostimulator to see if it relieves their pain before committing to long term therapy.

The device can be surgically removed later if the patient decides to pursue a different treatment. The batteries of rechargeable neurostimulators are recharged by low-frequency inductive energy transfer using a recharger that is attached to the patient’s belt. The recharger emits a non-radiating magnetic field that penetrates human tissue and the implanted device’s sealed metal enclosure for communication and recharging. An Ireland based global healthcare company got the approval of neurostimulator recharge system from the Federal Communications Commission of US without any clinical trial by only submitting the results of electromagnetic simulations carried out using Ansys Maxwell [3]. This resulted in saving of considerable time & money that would have gone into physical testing.

Use of body-worn wireless devices has grown in recent years because of actual and potential applications in healthcare, sports, law enforcement, entertainment and other areas.

Using a wireless device close to a human body creates a number of major design challenges. The radiated power of the device must be below levels that can cause health hazard. The device’s power consumption, size, weight etc. must be minimized to make it suitable for wearing. However,

the device must be designed to deliver a signal of sufficient power to the right location, with good reception by the target device — despite the fact that the human body may absorb a significant portion of that signal. These various aspects of the signal can be simulated by carrying out high frequency electromagnetic simulations in Ansys HFSS. A US based healthcare company used it to quickly gain insights into this complex interaction of signal with its surrounding. This helped them reduce the design time of a wearable antenna by 25% [4].

• Modeling a catheter kink using Ansys Mechanical can provide insights into the maximum stresses that the catheter walls have to sustain and hence help choose material that will withstand the stresses throughout the expected life of the device.

• Using Ansys fluids solutions can help understand the flow of drug through the catheter and its infusion in the blood.

Thrombotic occlusions of catheter may result from the formation of a thrombus within, surrounding, or at the tip of the catheter. By performing multiple fluids simulation of this occlusion over the complete parametric space, it is possible to create a Reduced Order Model (ROM) that can later be used in the systems model.

• An Electromagnetic (EM) analysis of the pump along with a Human Body Model (HBM) sheds light on the complex interaction of the EM field with the human body leading to estimates of absorption of radiation by the human body. A parametric analysis enables positioning studies.

On top of these individual physical modeling, a system model is also developed, which helps product teams understand how components and controls behave when assembled into a fully integrated system.

At Ansys, a complete Multiphysics solution is developed for a wearable insulin pump that is used to deliver insulin in right quantities based on the patient’s need [5]. Figure-1 shows a typical pump and the associated design challenges, namely durability of the pump, embedded software, power management, wireless communication, catheter design, catheter kinking, drug flow through the catheter & finally the drug infusion in the blood.

As illustrated by various examples above, Ansys Multiphysics solutions can be used to obtain various physics based & systems level insights of a medical device early in the design.

This helps engineers to reduce the cost & effort of prototyping & physical testing by providing opportunity to conduct parametric studies over the full Design of Experiment (DoE) space & optimize the design. This means safe, accurate, durable and affordable wearables & medical devices can be designed with a reduced time to market.

In the past, this called for the putting in place of maintenance regimes where regular checks were done, which was of course both costly and timeconsuming.

firmware. In mid-2018, ZKey was approached by a leading systems integration firm to contribute to a large scale MCM project. It would be responsible for the development and supply of the data acquisition apparatus required.

Over time, the performance parameters of the image sensors in machine vision implementations can deteriorate - with the resolution, contrast and noise levels all potentially being effected. If such deterioration is not dealt with, it could lead to product quality issues going unnoticed (and whole batches needing to be scrapped) or serious operational situations not being reacted to early enough, with downtime costs being accrued or even human safety being put at risk.

Through MCM, the particular places in which the effects of ongoing wear-and-tear are at their most acute can be identified, so that any necessary component replacements may be undertaken before actual failures occur. It means the working lifespan of the sophisticated electronic systems that have been invested in can be prolonged and the disruption relating to unscheduled repair activities avoided, while significantly reducing the dayto - day operational expenses too. Furthermore, potential injuries to the workforce caused by critical situations arising from component failures can also be averted. In the example described below, the objective of the MCM implementation is to carry out runtime verification of the machine vision systems in production facilities.

As we now enter the Industry 4.0/IoT era, and gaining access to key operational data becomes easier to achieve, there is the prospect of far more efficient methods via which to evaluate the health of complex systems right down at a granular level. The advent of machine condition monitoring (MCM) is already showing itself highly beneficial to industrial processing/manufacturing companies - giving them continuous streams of data about the status of their equipment in real time. From this, their staff are able to make well-informed decisions about where and when maintenance work might be needed, dispensing with the outdated preventative strategy and utilising a predictive one.

The capturing of analogue signals would be addressed by custom-built data acquisition boards constructed

by ZKey’s engineering department. High sampling rate data conversion ICs on these boards would then translate the received data into a digital stream - so that, after processing had been completed, in-depth analysis could be carried out.

Due to the industrial environment they would be situated in, the data acquisition boards (and their constituent electronics) could be constantly exposed to vibrational forces and extreme temperatures. A considerable degree of robustness was therefore mandated. After lengthy evaluation of analogueto-digital converters (ADCs) from numerous vendors, it was agreed that Teledyne e2v’s EV10AQ190A 5GHz sampling frequency devices would be placed at the heart of ZKey’s MCM data acquisition boards.

The project that ZKey became involved in would require the gathering and compiling of serial digital interface (SDI) signals concerning the functional characteristics of machine vision systems’ image sensors. From this, the health of these systems could be determined, by comparing the data with expected behaviour profiles and trying to spot anomalies.

When interleaved using their SPI interfaces, in conjunction with their built-in crosspoint switches, they each offer a pair of channels running at 2.5GSamples/s or 5GSamples/s across a single channel.

Through these devices, the data received by the ZKey boards gets converted into digital signals. The ADC on each board then feeds into its respective FPGA, so that initial processing can be executed. The high-end FPGA chips being used each possess almost 700,000 logic cells, along with 10MBytes of embedded RAM and extensive digital signal processing (DSP) resource.

Since the MCM runtime verification tests would be applied continuously, long-term operation of the data acquisition boards needed to be totally assured. The industry-leading mean time between failure (MTBF) figures of the EV10AQ190A ADCs gave the ZKey engineering team confidence that longevity would be achieved. Suited to deployment in uncompromising industrial settings, these devices can cope with operational temperatures up to 110°C.

Although ZKey’s engineering team had looked at the solutions available from other analogue/mixed signal IC suppliers, they could see real positives in specifying EV10AQ190A devices for this design. A notable differentiator here was the fact that, thanks to the cross-point switch incorporated in each ADC, the number of channels being utilised could be changed dynamically.

As well as saving valuable board space and reducing the overall bill of materials cost, there are other benefits that could be derived from this, since the EV10AQ190A would enable a platform approach to be taken (with one core design being applied to numerous different models). It presented ZKey engineers with far greater flexibility in terms of how the testing might be conducted by their client. Consequently, it would be straightforward to go from single channel to quad channel operation, while still using the same ICs as a basis for the data acquisition system. As Kevin Chiang, Chief Architect at ZKey, explains; “This feature gave us the capacity to switch between having four channels operating at lower sampling rates or a single channel at elevated rates. Hence, we could adapt to what the performance demands dictated, but without having to make any fundamental alterations to the system itself.”

The whole development process for this project was, as a result, dramatically shortened and the associated logistics simplified substantially. It has also meant that ZKey’s acquisition instrumentation is now fully future-proofed, so there is ample scope to deal with new application criteria as they emerge.

ZKey’s systems integration client is already placing sizable orders, which will equate to approximately 2,000 data acquisition boards per year. In addition to this, the company is also aware of further opportunities opening up to apply derivatives of the data acquisition board to other areas. As well as this major endorsement for its EV10AQ190, Teledyne e2v is currently seeing a lot of traction within the industrial, telecommunications, avionics, space and defence sectors, for the newer EV12AQ60x ADC series. These devices have similar feature sets to the EV10AQ190, but with 12-bit resolution capabilities and a smaller footprint (thanks to inclusion of serial I/Os). They support 6.4GSamples/s across a single channel, 3.2GSamples/s over two channels and 1.6GSamples/s when in quad channel mode.

What is V2X or Connected Vehicles?

Simply put, Vehicle-to-everything or V2X is an integrated communication system that allows a smart automobile to be connected to its environment, always. All the communication cannot go via Cloud always because of possible high latency and un-availability of internet. Advent of 5G will reduce this problem to great extent. These are also known as Connected Vehicles and typically comprise of automobiles with Interactive Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS’s) and Cooperative intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) and are designed to enhance ‘situation awareness’ and to identify and avoid traffic accidents. In other words, Connected Vehicles deploy intelligent communication that can be useful to solve traffic woes, enhance road safety, and offer seamless in-transit infotainment, advanced parking assistance and roadside assistance. It is also useful for remote diagnostics, and telematics for autonomous self-driving vehicles, and global positioning systems (GPS).

Largely, connected vehicles comprise of Vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I), Vehicle-to-Network (V2N), Vehicle -to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle – to- Pedestrian (V2P), Vehicle –to- device (V2D), and Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) connectivity. The DSCR – a WLAN based V2X communication, is the simplest form of connected vehicle network, and is useful to ensure efficient V2V and V2I communication in remote areas. The 3GPP or Cellular V2X, utilises the cellular data connectivity and communication network that offers an advanced, more sophisticated, two-way communication for V2I, V2V, V2D and V2N interactions.

Although nascent right now, the V2X is globally emerging as one of the smartest technology applications that efficiently combines AI, Data Analytics, smart Infrastructure and IoT, with the best in automobile technology. As per a report by Stratistics MRC, the Global Automotive V2X Market was estimated to be USD 341.22 million as of 2018 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 42.1% over the next decade, to reach USD 8060.79 million, by 2028.

Factors like rising traffic congestion, need to curtail environmental hazards due to emission, need for intelligent navigation and smart

transportation facilities powered by access to 5G connectivity, and road safety are some of the key motivators for the growth of the V2X market.

Gateway Scalability in Industrial IoT

To help maintain the balance between the computation power needed for IoT applications and data driven decision, there is a need to transmit relevant data to the cloud for providing the business insights, requiring the adaptation of edge devices. Powerful gateways which can perform the computation on the data collected, when coupled with network connectivity options can be the strong foundation required for a robust IIoT transformation.

Computing Scalability on the Gateway?

Scalability is the property of a system to handle a growing amount of work by adding resources to the system. The fastpaced development in the Industrial IoT domain demands that any new system be easily scalable. Enterprises and industries require proof of concepts to validate solution architecture while evaluating potential RoI on the solution.

With a successful proof-of-concept, there is a need to scale up to full scale implementation within a short span of time.

With this in mind, there is no time to design a gateway for each solution. Therefore, there needs to exist scalable computing on the gateway with the technology easily configurable for the higher demand.

the gateway is capable of being scalable not only in terms of computing power but also in handling the number of connected devices.

Why Scalable and Modular Communication?

There is now a multitude of wireless connectivity options available for Industrial IoT implementations. Ranging from LoRaWAN and Wirepas to setup a local network infrastructure to 4G Connectivity to the cloud, there is rapid innovation on the wireless connectivity.

For systems where the end nodes are spread over a very large area and the data polling rate is very low (~1/day), LoRa is best suited. In other cases, where there is a high density of nodes in a smaller area and a high data rates are required, BLE is a viable open source option. Wirepas, on the other hand, is a very robust protocol which enables low latency high data rates for a similar architecture as the previous one.

Some implementations require that a single node be able to poll multiple sensors and send the data to the gateway in real-time. Here even higher data rates are required and Wi-Fi proves to be the technology to rely upon.

With the aim to offer an engaging solution to connect the digital with the real and provide Indian start-ups a platform to showcase their talent in the AI domain, Infineon launched the AI Challenge in December 2019. The challenge sought an Intelligent Document Finder tool that can provide easy and intelligent searches among the document files. The main idea behind this problem statement was to combine human tagging with an automated semantic search for efficient document finding.

The initiative was started in collaboration with Startup India and AGNIi and several preliminary rounds later, Infineon selected ten finalists from over 250 start-up applications. Young entrepreneurs from across the country submitted their solutions to a jury whose members included AI experts from Infineon.

Kalyankar Analytics Pvt Ltd won the challenge while Resonova Technologies Pvt Ltd secured the first runner-up spot. The second runner-up and a special category awarding Best All Womens’ Team included student groups from across the country. The winning teams were awarded gadgets worth INR 3 lakh, along with a paid pilot of INR 5 lakh and an opportunity to intern with Infineon Technologies India.

MediaTek has recently announced the commercial availability of its MT3729 product family of 800GbE (Dual 400GbE) MACsec retimer PHYs designed for the high-speed and ultra-low power data transmissions needs of data centers and 5G infrastructure applications, in addition to the stringent security requirements of these applications.

The MT3729 family uses MediaTek’s industry-leading 56G PAM4 SerDes technology available as a standalone applicationspecific standard part (ASSP), and will equip Tier-1 network equipment and service providers to enable secure, reliable and high-speed data transfer for modem networking infrastructure.

Data center demand for 400GbE and above networking is expected to see strong growth by the end of 2020 and will eventually make up more than 25 percent of industry shipments by 2024, according to industry analysts. STMicroelectronics has announced the signing of two M&A agreements related to the acquisitions of the entire share capital of Ultra Wide Band specialist BeSpoon and of the cellular IoT connectivity assets of Riot Micro. After closing of the two transactions, subject to customary regulatory approvals, ST will further strengthen its offer for wireless connectivity and, in particular, the roadmap for its STM32 microcontrollers and secure MCUs. BeSpoon, based in Le Bourget du Lac, France, is a fabless semiconductor company founded in 2010 and specialized in Ultra Wide Band (UWB) communications technology. Their technology enables secure real-time indoor location with centimeter accuracy in environments under adverse conditions. The integration of this key secure positioning technology in the STM32 product portfolio will enable developers of IoT, automotive and mobile communication applications to provide services such as secure access, and precise indoor & outdoor mapping. ST will acquire BeSpoon from its majority shareholder, TRUMPF, and from its founders. ROHM and Leadrive Technology (LEADRIVE), the Chinese leading manufacturer of automotive powertrain for new energy vehicles with headquarters in Shanghai, held an opening ceremony of their joint laboratory on SiC technology in the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone (Lingang New Area).

SiC power devices have been adopted increasingly in onboard vehicle chargers and DC/DC converters. These devices provide several advantages compared to silicon-based power devices such as IGBTs. One key benefit: significantly lower losses during both switching and conduction along with being able to operate at higher temperature.

According to data gathered by BuyShares.co.nz, the total amount of funds AI startups raised over time reached $61.6bn in the second quarter of 2020, a 35% increase in a year.

In March, Chinese big data company MiningLamp raised $300 million in a round led By Tencent and Temasek, the secondlargest investment this year.

Statistics show that Berkshire Grey `s $263 million worth funding round led by SoftBank Group represents the third-largest investment in 2020. The Massachusetts-based robotics and AI company delivering retail, eCommerce, and logistics fulfillment automation, raised funds to finance global expansion, acquisitions, and team growth.

More than $8bn Funds Raised in 2020

In 2010, artificial intelligence startups worldwide raised a total of $277.3 million in funding rounds, revealed the CrunchBase data. In the next three years, this figure jumped to over $1bn for the first time.

Statistics show Asian companies raised a total of $20.3bn in funding, ranking as the second-leading region globally.

European AI startups follow with $7.3bn worth investments so far.

The CrunchBase data also revealed that the five most active investors in this industry come from the United States. The Colorado-based global platform for investment and innovation, Techstars, ranked first on this list with 258 funding rounds so far. Statistics show that startup accelerator Y Combinator, the second most active investor, took part in 198 funding rounds.

RS Components (RS) has announced its collaboration with the UK Government’s Crown Commercial Service (CCS) and other suppliers, to return the public sector to work as safely and as efficiently as possible. CCS do this by providing 'frameworks' for the supply of goods and services to the public sector. Public sector buyers can use the frameworks to purchase goods and services compliantly, without having to go through the traditional rounds of quotations.
