Design better touchscreens with simulation.
Visualization of electrode arrays in a capacitive touchscreen sensor and the log of the electric field norm when a finger touches the screen.
Many touchscreens developed for modern cars rely on capacitive sensing. Electrodes are embedded in a dielectric material, such as glass, and a voltage differential is applied, creating an electrostatic field. When someone touches the screen, the fields and capacitance change, and the device senses what part of the screen is being touched. To design better touchscreens, you can use simulation to accurately model the electrodes, surrounding metallic housing, and other dielectric objects. The COMSOL MultiphysicsÂŽ software is used for simulating designs, devices, and processes in all fields of engineering, manufacturing, and scientific research. See how you can apply it to analyzing capacitive touchscreens for use in automotive designs. comsol.blog/touchscreens

The word which discovered India in its digital tenure is ‘digitalization’. Relative to analysing the atmospheric physics to predict cloud for this monsoon, likewise, Cloud Computing was already heavy and dark to deluge the whole indigenous IT ecosystem. With changing Cloud mindset and an increased Cloud adoption among organizations, the Cloud computing market in India has grown beyond measure. To be precise, Public Cloud in India alone logged US$1.8Bn in 2017. Where surveys made much headlines talking about the cloud market and its growing services adoption of cloud among Indian businesses, this piece assiduously takes a step-ahead with aligning the numero unos to rediscover the Indian cloud market. The journey of this story began in July amidst the black clouds where rain was not only pivotal as it extended us to the cascade of pioneer companies from different domain and their mastery in extending myriad cloud services which has efflux the Indian cloud business. Expecting More Cloud for India? Settling down to incept the starting note of notion on technologies which are making cloud a big-wig was something of foremost interest, to which Purshottam Purswani, Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Atos India, elaborated, in the past few years India has seen increasing adoption of Cloud computing by both enterprises and Government, and it is expected to witness more growth in the future. Digital India is a campaign launched by the Government of India to ensure that the Government services are made available to the citizens electronically by improved online infrastructure and by increasing Internet connectivity or by making the country digitally empowered in the field of technology. Technologies such as Mobility, Big Data Analytics, the Internet of Things and most importantly Cloud Technologies are the fundamental backbone of these digital initiatives. At the same time Indian companies are increasingly focussing on the Cloud primarily due to a need for faster innovation, business agility, reduced goto-market time and scalability for their offerings. Purswani also emphasized italicizing on
public cloud, saying, the India Public Cloud services revenue is projected to grow 37.5 percent in 2018 to total US$2.5 billion, up from US$1.8 billion in 2017, according to Gartner, Inc. The highest growth will be driven by infrastructure as a service (IaaS) which was projected to grow at 49.2% in 2017, followed by 33% in software as a service (SaaS) and 32.1% in platform as a service (PaaS). On the other hand, to get further inputs on the technology-front, we asked Amod Phadke, Direct - Sales & Marketing, GCR on his thoughts. Where he promptly says, Wearables, Internet of Things (IoT), Internet of Everything IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Communication are the technologies we can expect to swell in the coming time. However, IoT and AI/ ML stand a promising chance to gain growth in the coming months. Due to the cloud delivery model, more and more vendors will be able to deliver these solutions with low entry barriers. Therefore, we should experience an upward shift in people experiencing these newer solutions. Again, both solutions depend on data, so we can also experience data analytics gaining a bigger ground in complete cloud gamut. Based on the cloud technology, we at GCR, provide vertical focused, SaaS connected, IoT solutions which can help professionals in transforming their businesses, the digital way. Veteran, Shivkumar Ganesan, CEO and cofounder, Exotel also did put his thoughts stating, since the emergence of cloud, it has been widely accepted by numerous companies. Almost every organisation has adopted cloud technology and working wonders using cloud. Mostly Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, IoT and Blockchain have been the major pick of the industry however we have also seen organisations taking strong steps to improve communication. Hence, besides the above mentioned Cloud telephony has also become got adopted by all sizes of organisations. It has become commonplace now because more and more rapidly growing businesses have started to realise the advantages of it. Bringing efficiency to customer communication by automating wherever possible and creating customised solutions using easily programmable APIs has been the biggest selling point of cloud telephony.

Trend of System-Level Integration in Designing SoC will Continue in the Future The electronic devices today are architected through a SoC design paradigm. The success of system-on-chip (SoC) hinges upon a well-concerted integrated approach from multiple disciplines, such as device, design, and application. Further explaining the quiddity of SoC designs in modern electronics, Sambit Sengupta, Associate Director – Field Applications, Avnet India demystifies the schematics of SoC design complexities in literary legibility and also shares the copes, advancements and challenges. Edited Nub.
Q
08 BISINFOTECH.COM
Is rapid development of standards and pressure on power consumption and minimizing area remains a bottleneck for modern SoC designs? The emergence of battery-operated System-on-Chip (SoC) in recent years increased the efforts to reduce the power consumption. Early works identified the need of minimizing the power consumption at the initial hardware/ software codesign process. In today’s era, there is a crucial need for efficient power consumption simulation and estimation tools. The increased complexity of modern SoC applications limits the capabilities of such
simulation tools to predict the exact measured power consumption. We at Avnet focus on a modular approach to deliver innovation in developing modern SoC. Over the years, we have developed a robust offering of System-on-Modules (SoM) devices that are based on the leading programmable System-on-Chip (SoC) processors. Avnet has developed various SoM modules inhouse as well as partner its embedded design house. Whether your technology requirement is on ARM or on X86 architecture or MPU or requires FPGA architecture, we have solutions for every segment. An online product selection guide (https://www.avnet.com/wps/portal/us/solutions/technologies/ boards-and-modules/system-on-module/ ) further helps customer to focus on their application development. SoC such as zync/ultrascale, i.mx, intel multi core devices design benefits from this approach.
Q
Is verifying complete system in a SoC design still a major challenge? The electronic devices today are architected through a SoC design paradigm. The success of system-on--chip (SoC) hinges upon a well-concerted integrated approach from multiple disciplines, such as device, design, and application. There are several challenges that one may face while integrating components on the chip. Firstly, there is a huge gap between what can be theoretically designed and what can be practically implemented. New requirements on performance, power consumption, and rapid design cycles necessitate that one revisits the fundamental design principles. For instance, one of the persistent challenges is how to deploy in concert an ever increasing number of transistors with acceptable power consumption. Another challenge is that in order to meet the increasingly demanding requirements in multimedia applications, SoC must provide functional flexibility as well as processing capability. For new applications in Industrial IoT, rapid prototyping or in data crunching environments, verifying the complete system
SoC
Q
What will mitigate the complex system design and timing closure problems of complex SoC designs? SoC design cycle requires detailed verification and it will be helpful if designers work on timing closures from very early in the design. For example, in any Xilinx SoC design- the customer has access to the world class EDA tool, Vivado – which is provided by Xilinx. The inbuilt simulation tool helps in sorting problems very early in the design cycle. Here the old adage ‘prevention is better than cure’ is of paramount importance. At Avnet, we have a large team of technical experts/ field application engineers (FAEs) who can help in independent verification and validation of customer design on request. In some cases an independent verification and validation paid service may also help to accelerate the project.
Q
How complicated is SoC architecture in network design? As SoCs continue to evolve to have more and more programmable elements and processors on them, the opportunity to tune the processors, interconnect and other blocks to match the intended application and gain advantages of performance and energy consumption is one that many designers are still not aware of.The other challenge is around IP integration that has become pivotal in determining whether design teams of advanced system on chips (SoCs) meet their time to market and performance goals. The rapid growth in the number of available intellectual property (IP) blocks has both enabled and paralleled the increase in the size and complexity of SoCs. One of the most difficult challenges in SoC network design is determining how to make sure the hardware and software work together at the SoC level. Hardware verification has advanced to the point where the verification of individual functional blocks in a design can be achieved with reasonable confidence using constrained code coverage, assertion coverage, and functional coverage. Challenges remain in making sure the blocks work correctly when placed
in the context of the SoC. Whether in telecommunications or consumer electronics, network design using SoC requires lot of planning by designers. Engineers need to have modular design approach while doing network design, and always under time to market pressure. Avnet provides access to many IPs which can be integrated with existing SoC designs and hence resolve the time to market pressure. The plug and play IP are usually targeted to the choice of SoC and can be procured off the shelf.
Q
What disciplines SoC designers adapt to minimize the risk of design error? SoC designers need to be strong in verification and validation techniques. There are wide level of EDA tools or tools from SoC vendors available to help today’s engineers while doing SoC design. However deep understanding of timing issues, embedded design flow and strong verification and validation techniques stand in good stead for SoC designers.
Q
Design verification has always a highly expensive and timeconsuming component of electronic system development? How Systemon-Chip (SoC) architectures morphed verification? The main challenge for SoC design today is that increased functionality is packed in each of the new chip available. Shrinking die size and better power management is enabling designers to have more advanced SoC, however this comes with challenges of better techniques of verification. At every level - whether module, chip or system leveldesigners need to use tools to validate the design. Latest SoC architectures help in various ways by giving better tools and more predictive analysis for designers.
Q
How difficult is matching Security protocol in modern SoC designs? SoCs or the systems developing them are prone to a wide range of security attacks. Security has become a critical consideration in the design cycle of every embedded SoC or system. The level of security in a SoC design is widely debated based on the critical nature of the applications and the
associated cost-benefit risks tradeoffs. Some of the modern SoC always comes with various security inbuilt. Designers now have options to add on security by using secure elements. Avnet helps designers to learn more about the latest technologies to secure SoC by conducting regular workshops at customer sites.
Q
What is the future of SoC designs?
The trend of system-level integration in designing SoC will continue in the future and this will have a strong influence on the designer’s environment. Increasing technology capabilities will enable new qualities of system integration. The demand for advanced mobile applications and distributed intelligent sensor arrays will lead to an integration of RF components (to be realized in CMOS) into SoCs. SoC designs will have expanded roles to play in Artificial intelligence and robotics. In many new designs of sub components of smart city design and Industry 4.0, we see the start of SoC design. In critical telecom designs as well as complex RADAR designs, SoC are readily used.
Q
Are Indian companies capitalizing on the global demand for SoC design expertise? Developing solutions that generate more sales has long been the mantra of India's software sector. Global semiconductor companies and OEM manufacturers are beginning to outsource the development of even complex, 'bleeding-edge' technologies such as SoC to several Indian startups and established companies with design expertise. Indian companies are positioning themselves to benefit from the shift to mobile devices, multimedia, networking and broadband applications, all of which are driving demand for system-chip technology.
Q
How strong is your SoC design team in India? Avnet India is a technology solutions provider supporting its customers in their SoC design. Whether it is a design of RADAR or satellite, or a complex 5G RAN design or consumer electronics, we have deep trained professionals who can guide you in SoC designs.

Applications such as Internet of Things (IoT) have significantly expanded from consumer-based applications like healthcare, smart home and wearables, to industrial applications such as industrial automation and the smart city. And, all these applications use Microcontrollers (MCUs) widely. According to market research, the handheld device market is expected to further grow, with billions of devices connected to the internet in the near future. This market represents a huge opportunity for device manufacturers. Other than MCUs, most of these devices consist of PMIC, RFIC, sensors and small batteries, which sense motions from humans and other things and communicate with cloud.
Handheld devices are typically used without power lines. In many use cases, the battery is seldom re-charged or replaced. To minimize current consumption, MCUs, along with other system components, must typically maintain active mode for brief periods of time, mostly operating in a sleep mode. Sleep current greatly affects the standby power of the device. It is not negligible and impacts the overall power consumption particularly for handheld devices that stay in sleep mode frequently. The current profile in sleep mode enables the designer to validate whether the device is in an unexpected state and consuming more power due to bugs in the software or hardware. Current profile analysis provides the designer with the current value and timing of each transition or segment in detail, and helps the designer to validate if the entire system is operated and managed as expected. In addition, the total current in the active state is the operating current consumption, which impacts the power consumption. An accurate current profile enables designers to analyze each segment in detail and quantitatively determine the optimum balance between performance and current consumption, which has been difficult by measuring the averaged current. Inrush currents and spikes occur when the device changes mode, for example, from sleep to active mode. It can cause a voltage drop of supply voltage or a degradation of battery capacity. Concurrent analyses of current and voltage waveforms on supply voltage and subsystems can provide indications of problem causes for troubleshooting. It also helps designers optimize the timing control and component selections, and validate designer modifications perform as expected. Achieving an optimal balance between performance and power consumption to maximize battery life; reduce the circuit design cycles of complicated, multifunctional products to meet time-to-market goals; and maintain a competitive advantage is the need of the hour. Preventing product defects to avoid costly recalls is critical. Handheld devices are typically shipped in high volumes. It is therefore vital to prevent any defects from occurring in advance, because any quality issues that result in measures, such as a product recall, can be extremely costly.
MCUs
Having said that, for handheld and mobile applications, measuring the power profile of low power devices, like Microcontrollers, is key. Visualizing the transient current waveform, quickly analyzing transient current response to applied voltage pulse and efficiently performing reliability tests are key tests among the number of tests performed by validation Engineers to test MCUs. Power profile analysis of MCUs (microcontrollers) is an important parameter that needs to be characterized efficiently, especially, when more MCUs are leveraged in a battery powered environment. Power hungry microcontrollers will eventually lose, paving the way for more energy efficient ones. And, with technologies like IoT being part of every other handheld system, energy consumption behavior of microcontrollers will play a big role in overall system performance. State-of-the-art power and current analyzers are a must have in engineering labs these days for the aforementioned reasons. Investment in these type of solutions can go a long way in getting the needed first mover advantage. In addition, signal integrity and power integrity issues are becoming more common due to the compact circuit design with closer components or traces, as well as lower DC supply voltages and tolerances. Potential issues for EMI or EMC should be detected at early stages of the design phase to avoid costly re-test and delayed time-tomarket. All these design and test challenges can be minimized with the right test solutions. Modern Device Current Waveform Analyzers can greatly accelerate the process of creating a current profile based on the precise dynamic current waveform, and dramatically improve debug efficiency. Simultaneous monitoring of voltage and current is possible in these current waveform analyzers. Also, these analyzers can help understand how the voltage changes with variations in current, and validate, debug and troubleshoot the circuit modifications quantitatively and efficiently thus speeding up validation and debug time. Electronic instrumentation vendors offer a wide range of test solutions to address many of these consumer electronics test challenges. This is possible with continuous innovation and investment in developing new technologies and participation in industry-standard bodies.

Q
Can you share an anecdote on your unique business model of Rent and Lease Testing Equipment which seems to me 'One of its Kind' for Indian market? The concept of rentals is not new. Rental options are available for high end automobiles, fashion and outfits, infrastructure machinery and tools. Traditionally in the technology industry, R&D engineers and organisations have owned the equipment that they needed for testing. The rate at which the technology was changing was much slower. However, in the last decade or so, the technological changes have been enormous and the life cycle of products has become shorter. On the other hand, the need to have a faster go to market has been ever increasing. This has led the organisations to rethink how they operate and adopt business models that can meet these requirements whilst protecting their investments. With the concept of the rental services in T&M equipment, we

have demonstrated a business model that not only helps customers acquire the right technology at the right time at the right place but also maximize the use of their available budget and be protected from obsolescence. Apart from this other factors that result in an increase in costs and are generally hidden but contribute to the total cost of ownership like downtime whilst the equipment breaks down and is in repair, calibration and maintenance of the equipment, costs associated with management and disposal get addressed through this model wherein the customer pays only for the time that they actually use the equipment.
Q
India as you see is vigorously contributing to become technologically ample in the coming few years. The Test and Measurement Industry in India is also at its nascent stage. What challenges does Microlease perceive to stand a potent ground in future via the Indian Market Scenario? Well, it is very subjective question. For India to become forerunner of the technologies, country and industry to improve the innovation culture right from the school & colleges/ university levels. It can somehow be achieved with culture of real meaning of the internships and off course to promote innovations. For T&M Industry, I see tough price competition, import of low quality products from China and high rate of GST rate` 18% are few challenges.
Q
14 BISINFOTECH.COM
It’s highly commendable that, Microlease has been in the T&M business for over 30 years catering to all the major names in the industry. Has there been any competition pressure on Microlease? How does Microlease stand out from its competition in the market? Yes! of course, there has been competition and it continues to be there. Competition for us comes in all shapes and forms. The biggest competition that we face is the buying mindset of the companies which they have developed over the last few decades. In the business of
technology, the R&D cycles have been reasonably long and hence customers traditionally have been owning test equipment for long periods. However, this is changing now due to faster technological developments and higher obsolescence rates and of course rising cost pressures. Apart from this, we have and continue to face competition from both local as well as International companies engaged in the same business. Competition, I personally feel, is healthy and promotes innovation. After all, it can sometimes get really boring also being the only player in the market place and can lead to complacency, which is the last thing we would want. Our ability to cater to a large segment of customers through its Global presence and a huge inventory is one of the key differentiators for us. Also, this business has been evolving and growing over the last 3 decades and that shows how agile and dynamic we are in adopting to the customer and market needs and that continues to be our strength as we move along.
Q
Current scenario of T&M market in India and how is Microlease collaring to tap the major chunk? India is emerging as the forerunner in the next era of tech innovations. The Indian ESDM sectors have witnessed the growth in recent years along with shift in focus from pure play systems or product designs to include area such as product development, original design manufacturing and so on. The high product quality, safety and environmental standards for manufacturing, maintenance and use of equipment. The government initiatives Make in India, Smart Cities, Defense Manufacturing are pushing new requirements for TM business. We have witnessed requirements coming from Semiconductor Hardware Testing (digital interconnects like HDMI, MIPI, USB, Ethernet), Automotive Electronics, Electronics (Automotive Sensors Integration, Vehicle Networking and Communications) Manufacturing and General-Purpose Electronics. We have also observed regional Test Houses for EMI/EMC coming up
in south and north and it is really a positive sign for local manufacturing. Telecom industry has been going through a phase of consolidation and tariff wars but continues to remain an attractive segment with a lot of potential especially in the wake of upcoming technologies like 5g-IOT.
Q
Any key new developments of the company in the last fiscal year which you would like to share it with our readers? Over the last 2 years we have gone through two major Acquisitions and that has made is bigger and better in terms of our ability to cater to the evergrowing needs of our customers. Last year we were acquired by Electrorent which has made us number 1 T&M Rental company globally with an inventory strength of over 108000 test equipment over 8000 product lines and the financial strength and capability to invest further into upcoming technologies.
Q
According to Microlease which key trends you reckon will shape the Indian and at large the global T&M market in coming years? The technology is evolving every day. The next generation of the communication 5G will impact every business and day to day life. With the advent of the technology, other industries will change the curve. With more fast and connected world, Internet of Things, MM Waves Technology and next generation of automobile will surely change the world where we live in. The fusion of the sensors, fast speed internet, machine to machine communication will lead to more data driven society. All new technologies will bring additional challenges and opportunities to T&M Industry to come up with new cuttingedge products before the final roll outs. This will ultimately lead a scenario for T&M organization working hand in hand with Technology Company to solve the future challenges and developing their own platforms solutions. n

Osram Nurture IR LEDs, Now For Security Cameras Osram infrared chip’s narrow beam eliminates the need for secondary optics, the company says, as it continues to drive LEDs beyond general illumination. Osram lately added another chip to its infrared line - dubbed SFH 4718A joins the company’s Oslon Black portfolio of infrared (IR) LEDs The new SFH 4718A joins the company’s Oslon Black portfolio of infrared (IR) LEDs, with a beam angle of ±25°, more tapered than the ±45° and ±75° that were already part of the stable. The push of Osram towards LED use into non-illumination applications continues as this time narrowing the beam angle for optimization in security cameras Osram’s Opto Semiconductors (OS) group said the narrower beam eliminates the need for secondary optics in mediumcapture range security uses, such as in parking garages. “This makes the overall system more compact and costeffective,” Osram OS said. The new chip emits a wavelength of 850 nm, part of the infrared spectrum of invisible light. Osram has been steadily building up its offerings of IR LEDs – which it calls IREDs – as it pushes LED lighting beyond its established role as an illumination source. A year ago, it added an 850-nm chip geared for use in virtual reality and augmented reality headsets. The new SFH 4718A IR LED (top) optimizes security cameras in medium-capture environments such as parking garages, Osram said. The company offers IR LEDs at three different wavelengths — 810, 850, and 940 nm — each tailored for different applications.Osram firmly believes that LEDs in both the visible and invisible spectra will be in great demand amid the world’s insatiable drive to digitize seemingly everything. That’s why the company is in the midst of a €1 billion LED chip factory expansion in Kulim, Malaysia, envisioning LEDs for
applications spanning automobiles, fitness watches, drones, phones, laptops, and much more. Meanwhile, IR LEDs are also featuring in a couple of trials of Li-Fi systems by Germany’s Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute, in which infrared waves transmit data in two-way, Wi-Fi-like transmissions, using light rather than Wi-Fi’s radio spectrum. Fraunhofer has experimented with infrared Li-Fi at a BMW plant, and is hopeful that its infrared Li-Fi will catch on for outdoor communications in partnership with Japanese telecommunications company Sangikyo. Li-Fi in other instances also embeds data in visible light. The non-illumination use of LED chips is part of a broader trend among lighting companies in which they are treating the lighting infrastructure as an information technology network aimed at gathering, analyzing, and monetizing data. The transformation has not been an easy one, as evidenced by recent financial revisions and results from major players such as Osram and Signify (formerly Philips).

Cloud in India The word which discovered India in its digital tenure is ‘digitalization’.
On the other hand, to get further inputs on the technology-front, we asked Amod Phadke, Director - Sales & Marketing, GCR on his thoughts.

Despite its rapid growth, there are many challenges to Cloud adoption in India. With this lead-in statement, Purswani referred the below: • Connectivity – Lack of high speed internet connectivity at a reasonable cost is one of the primary obstacles for Cloud adoption • Security – concerns around the data security and privacy also hinders Cloud-based services adoption • Cost assessment – Opex-based business models of Cloud services makes assessment of cost difficult leading frequently to procurement, contracting and budgetary issues during scaling of projects The quality of bandwidth and the availability of Internet across geographies poses a challenge for the adoption of cloud, prompted Phadke. Further stating on the lacuna of the internet, Phadke said, although India has seen newer telecom players providing low-cost internet services. However, the availability of Internet across the regions at a similar pace or speed is still an issue. IoT security also adds up as one of the major glitches that India faces in cloud adoption, the issue with security and IoT is that it drastically increases the attack surface, which means that exist a huge number of devices, operating systems, protocols and endpoints. Therefore, there are a lot more pathways present in the network because of which they face the inbuilt security challenges. Ganeshan added, in India many the sectors have adopted cloud for their organisational growth, however Software Deployment, Implementation & rollout to multiple offices have come up as the challenges in cloud adoption by Indian organisations. Besides this security has also been a concern to the enterprises. Reliability is one of the largest challenges of AI, ML or cloud telephony as keeping in mind the fact that we cannot completely bank on the internet and telephony infrastructure of our country.
IT-as-a-Service – The Wildfire
Today, India is second only to China as the largest and fastest-growing cloud services market in Asia Pacific. Having said that,IT-as-a-Service is ramping up in the Indian IT ecosystem. Citing on this new trend, Phadke said, ITaaS will grow as companies might not want to spend on new purchases but still to keep IT department functional, they would shift their focus from spending on resources to consuming resources. Another critical factor that drives this initiative is the availability of quality resources for new age technologies like IoT, Data Analytics, AI and ML. GCR’s premium e-commerce partners platform
delivers IoT solutions helping businesses to understand their customers/markets by providing intelligent inputs and feedback, enabling them to monitor and manage their resources for optimum returns. However, there are external factors which can slow down the decision-making process of clients wherein companies have no choice but to invent themselves. They need to remain relevant to their organizations business requirements as well. Ganeshan said, India is in the midst of its biggest digital transformation exercise, and the cloud is playing the role of a principal catalyst by being the foundation for a majority of digital transformation projects. Companies are transforming their IT staffs to work faster, smarter, and in ways that truly benefit the business. If we talk about Cloud telephony, today, businesses interact with their customers mostly outside a traditional call center. This includes conversations with delivery personnel, drivers, vendors, service providers, etc. This entire activation is held by the growing strength of IT services. According to Gratner’s forecasts India Public Cloud revenue will grow 37.5 percent in 2018. A combination of legacy systems, cloud computing, and internal and external operations have been a major bricks to make IT As A Service. Whereas, Purshwani cited, We are living in the age of Software-as-a-Service module, so it has tremendous opportunities not only in India, but outside of India as well. The IT-as-a-Service model, enables companies to treat and run IT as a business, and therefore optimize and scale depending on the business requirement. The entire IT landscape is going through rapid changes and disruptions. This digital transformation fuelled by new digital technologies like Cloud computing, IoT, AI and Data Analytics requires new skills and a constant upgrade of the workforce. To combat this, it makes sense for companies to focus on the core business and let the IT experts take care of the latest innovations in the IT, thereby becoming the consumers of IT. Therefore, companies are increasingly looking at Cloud-first strategies and are adopting cloud services at all levels. In such scenarios ITaaS has become a very viable operational model for relatively large sized companies that need support 24/7 365 days a year and monitoring of Enterprise IT. Purshwani clarified, we are increasingly seeing Enterprise IT becoming complex and heterogeneous day-by-day and many enterprises will likely in the future run hybrid Cloud environments, such as a mix of Private Cloud, Public Cloud, and on-premise applications. We will see
STORY COVER
Conversing further on the subject, Phadke, said, Enterprises usually prefer hybrid cloud technology for complete delivery of IT services for their organizations. Enterprises also prefer cloud technology which can easily approach with a Multi-Cloud strategy to avoid dependency on a single vendor. A Cloud-first program is present in nearly every organization. The power which Cloud brings in, has challenged a lot of enterprises to move from on-premise to the Cloud, which apparently helps them to become scalable and agile based on their customer needs asserted Purswani.
On the heels, Phadke, said, IoE and high-speed internet availability would drive more quality services and solutions being delivered through the cloud till the last mile. This would also mean a larger number of organisations/homes adopting IOT solutions, therefore, increasing data and internet consumption. Emphasizing on Cisco report, Ganeshan said, India will add, on average, 5 million Internet users and 8.3 million networked devices every month. IoE has truly gone mobile, forever altering customer expectations and experiences. At 70 million, India already has the largest number of WhatsApp users in the world. Internet of Everything today mainly is approached from the perspective of connected devices, their sensing capabilities, and communication possibilities. AI, ML and cloud telephony are built on two internet hence IoE is going to be widely adopted by Indian enterprises.
Impact of Internet-of-Everything (IoE) and High-Speed Internet in 2018
How Security Concern Gave Rise to Cloud Security – The Unheard
Drafting an elaborative notion, Purswani said, The Internet-of-Everything (IoE), built around the global interconnection of people, process, context and things, is already starting to happen. This comprehensive penetration of high-speed internet to the last mile will have a high impact in the fields of Cloud, Mobility and Analytics. Cloud computing is the foundation technology for IoE. The combination of IoE and Cloud will drive the nextgeneration of innovative solutions in the market. In recent years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has been a major trend shaping the future of markets such as health, transport and the home. Wearable sensors that measure one’s activity and heart rate are impacting on Healthcare. For transportation, connected and autonomous cars are beginning to emerge. In the home, there are a growing number of connected objects that allow us to automate the watering of our plants, the opening of window shutters and control our central heating systems. The growth of IoT devices will mean an increased demand on the computing resources, which will be required to connect these devices and collect and analyse data from them. The potential of IoE cannot be fulfilled without the integration of the Cloud. The Cloud will help to: • Rollout IoT solutions faster to the market • Manage large amount of data generated • Scale business applications and infrastructure as needed • Easily integrate business applications Thus, Cloud will be an integral and important foundation for IoT and IoE solutions.
Referring to a Global survey, Phadke observed, cloud security market is ready to swell upto12.73 billion USD by 2022. As India aims towards a higher growth path for cloud adoption and allied services, Cloud security even though is in the nascent stage would experience equivalent growth. Out of 12.73 billion, we should surely witness a bigger pie being consumed by Cloud security providers in India. Analysing on the critical importance of security, reliability and resilience of data and infrastructure, Purswani said, the massive potential promised by Cloud developments is matched by a proportionate rise in the potential threats as well. As we come to rely more than ever before on this new connectivity. Analysts estimate that 60% of enterprises will be victims of major breaches by the year 2020. In the digital world, enterprises will need a seamless security strategy. We can think of the below four areas that underpin security in the worlds of Cloud and IoE: 1. Securing sensors and their operations, 2. E nsuring the confidentiality and integrity of data in transit, 3. Securing stored data on Clouds, and 4. Securing access to information via identity and access management solution. Enterprises are going to need help to tackle these critical issues and there will be opportunities for solution providers across all the phases, right from the initial consultancy and analysis, through to the implementation and ongoing management of the cybersecurity services.
Cloud Technology – What’s the Temperament?
Cloud computing is the foundation technology for IoE. The combination of IoE and Cloud will drive the nextgeneration of innovative solutions in the market. Poised with an elated response, Purswani said, the increasing focus on IT and digital transformation will result in an increase in demand for these professionals across all verticals including e-commerce, financial services, manufacturing, logistics and healthcare. However, there are frequent changes and disruptions in the digital technologies space which is having a significant influence on the future skill demands for professionals. The speed of technological change means that the workforce has to keep itself abreast with the new developments and reskilling themselves to stay relevant to the changing business needs. There will be a lot of opportunities for young India to work in the areas below: • Cloud – Roles from Cloud application developers, Cloud support engineers, Dev-Ops engineers to Cloud solution architects will be in demand. • Advanced Analytics – There is a growing demand for strong data analytics skills along with managing the data for enterprises. There are job opportunities for Data Scientists, Data Architects, and Data Managers. • Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics – With increasing focus on AI, the demand for professionals with skills in Machine Learning and Deep Learning along with Robotic Process Automation will be high. • IoT – There will be opportunities to work across the entire IoT value chain, right from Sensors and Edge Gateways to the IoT platforms and IoT Service Management. Whereas, Phadke mulls, with growing cloud adoption, there is an evident increase in Cloud service providers, Cloud allied services and Cloud-based solutions. Growth in these segments would increase the requirement for skilled manpower. To start planning for tomorrows requirements, we need to begin with skill development programs or advisory boards for the education sector. This must be done in order to bridge the gap between industry demands and education curriculum. We are hopeful to witness a win-win situation for both, the industry and young India. INDIAN A&D
There are more than three million parts in a plane that requires hundreds of vendors to complete. While competition may be perceived as negative in most sectors, it is positive sign for the Indian Aerospace & Defence industry. Global aerospace manufacturing industry is reckon to worth more than $2o billion(Bn) by a. Aerospace manufacturing comprises the production of general aircraft which is mostly for business use and space vehicles, usually satellites, for both military and commercial use. Simultaneously, the defense industry to be more prodigious which is expected to be worth more than $700Bn by the year 2026. Defense manufacturing depends on the nation’s need for military weapons and systems designed to operate on land, sea, and in the air in order to defend themselves.
THE NEW BATTLEFIELD!
FEATURE
Indian A&D Worth India’s Aerospace manufacturing stands at $250 million, compared to the $100 billion global market. However, the outlook for the Aerospace and Defence Industry in India is positive and expected to reach $70 billion by 2029, according to a joint report by IESA, Nasscom and Roland Berger. The government-backed expansion of domestic industries, particularly in Defence and Aerospace in order to increase self-reliance, support the steady growth and will attract more FDI. Several foreign companies have already entered strategic partnerships with India companies and many others and eyeing the billion dollar opportunities in the Indian Aerospace & Defence Industry. Indian A&D Sector Respires New Laws and Strategic Partnerships In an attempt to improve the quality of weapons and to promote domestic production, India is changing its laws to open Defence equipment manufacturing to the private sector. For the past 70 years, the country had only allowed government-owned enterprises to make weapons. This marks a milestone for Aerospace and Defence manufacturers and will attract plenty of foreign investment. The Indian Defence ministry released a strategic partnership policy to promote partnerships between Indian Private Sector companies and foreign companies, wherein the foreign partners would bring in advanced technology and
manufacture in India. Currently, India buys almost 70% of its weapons from overseas, which leaves plenty of room for growth for the domestic production. The policy is aimed to minimize dependence on imports and infuse self-sufficiency in Defence manufacturing. Single-engine fighter aircraft, light armored helicopters, submarines, main battle tanks and armored fighting vehicles are the categories initially opened for bidding by such strategic partnerships. Defense Electronics Market – The New Lingo Within the defense sector, Defence electronics have emerged as a key market. As per estimates from India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) president M. N. Vidyashankar today, of the $42.2 billion Defence budget, Defence electronics was allocated about $6.25 billion. The Aerospace and Defence electronics market in India is projected to be around $72 billion by the next decade. IESA, along with the National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) have put together draft recommendations on a “Defence Electronics Policy“ they hope the government will implement in a timely manner in order to enhance the development of the sector. The release of the Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP) in 2016 has already bought major shift that has impacted the overall supply chain dynamics. Many private sector companies have since ventured into the Defence sector and actively seeking foreign partnerships. Some Recent Strategic Partnerships Include: • Reliance Defence entered into a JV agreement with the France based Daher Aerospace for Aerospace equipment manufacturing in India. The facility will be the first ‘Make in India’ Defence project set at the Dhirubhai Ambani Aerospace Park in Nagpur. • Tata Group signed an agreement with American Aerospace giant Lockheed Martin to jointly manufacture the combat-proven F-16 fighter jets in India. • Wipro Infrastructure Engineering (WIN) entered an alliance with Israel’s largest Aerospace and Defence firm
Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) to manufacture composite aerostructure parts and assemblies in India. One specific location for India’s future Defence industry is already on the rise. A very likely hub seems to be Hyderabad, capital of the state Telangana and home to India’s first private sector missile manufacturing facility. As several global giants have joined hand with Indian companies to set up manufacturing units, Industry leaders say that the city has become the centre for implementing the Make in India initiative. With the set-up of Kalyani Rafael Advanced Systems (KRAS), a joint venture between Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Limited and Kalyani Strategic Systems, Telangana Industry Minister KT Rama Rao believes KRAS will propel the Defence electronic manufacturing eco system in Hyderabad to the next level, noting that “Hyderabad has all the trappings to become the number one destination for Defence and Defence electronics”. Other states are also in line with states like Haryana and Tamil Nadu among others working on rolling out Aerospace and Defence policies. What’s Driving Indian A&D Market • The MTS services segment is expected to gain traction in the India aerospace & defense market, owing to increasing need to cut the costs and outsource these services to the third-party players. • L and security solutions are expected to witness substantial demand in the India aerospace & defense market, owing to the increasing need from the domestic/ homeland and border security. • A ir application is expected to hold a majority share in the India aerospace & defense market, owing to the growing demand for efficient and environmentally friendly aircrafts. • I nitiatives undertaken by the government to make India self-reliant in terms of defense requirements is expected to drive the India aerospace & defense market over the forecast timeline. • Introduction of offset policy enabled the component manufacturers to enter the India aerospace & defense market. • Initiatives undertaken by the government to make India self-reliant

Mapping Talent Pool While there is a dearth of skilled labour in the aerospace sector, those who have been trained on machinery in the
automobile industry can be re-skilled to fit the aerospace sector. Companies have taken the initiative to train professionals in this respect. Aequs Aerospace had launched the Aerospace Knowledge Center (AKC), with a vision to educate freshers and employees in the skills that precision aerospace manufacturing needs. It is a niche skill that holds high value and is not traditionally available in India. Since the company has presence in France and US, they were able to bring highly-experienced instructors to teach about every aspect of aerospace manufacturing. They also provide counselling to students in colleges in Belagavi as it is among the most preferred fields in engineering. The manufacturing sector especially is experiencing a revolution with profits soaring and several firms being represented globally. Strong PublicPrivate consolidation, admirable policies and right technologies are going hand-to-hand. This is the right time where one looking for India as the next country propelling A&D shall put in their footprints to the morale notching into a billion dollar opportunity. -MANAS@BISINFOTECH.COM n

Chinese major chipmaker Tsinghua Unigroup has known to have inked an acquisition deal to acquire French smart chip components maker Linxens for about 2.2 billion euros (US$2.6 Bn). The deal was in process for over a month which has now taken the public limelight. Tsinghua’s acquisition of Linxens from private-equity group CVC is still pending regulatory clearance, three of the sources told Reuters, adding regulators in France, Germany and the company’s union need to approve the deal. According to three sources, Tsinghua has already locked in a deal with four banks for a 1.5 billion euro (US$1.75 billion) bridge loan to fund the
transaction. Credit Suisse, a main lender in the loan, also advised the seller, the people said. So far this year, China has spent $45.5 billion on European assets, more than double year-ago levels, while its investments in the United States has dropped 75 per cent to $1.9 billion, according to Thomson Reuters data. The authorities are not expected to object, the sources said on condition of anonymity as the information is confidential. Failure to get local regulatory approval has previously scuttled Tsinghua’s offshore investment plans, such as share purchases totalling $2.6 billion from three
Taiwanese chip makers – Powertech Technology Inc, ChipMOS Technologies Inc and Siliconware Precision Industries Co – that fell through in 2016 and 2017. That followed a 2015 debacle when an informal $23 billion approach for US giant Micron Technology Inc was rejected by the Idaho-based chip maker amid national security concerns – a rationale that has increasingly been used to block Chinese deals in sensitive US industries. Linxens, headquartered close to Paris, has 535 million euros in annual sales and employs 3,500 staff at nine production sites globally. It also has offices in China, Singapore and Thailand.

Microchip Technology has introduced new two- and three-channel power monitoring devices that measure from 0V to 32V on a single chip, offering designers solutions that are easy to adopt and improve power measurement accuracy. The two-channel device is also the industry’s first with native 16-bit resolution, providing leading flexibility across a wide measurement range. Managing and reducing power consumption is crucial in low voltage, high power applications such as FieldProgrammable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and embedded computing devices. These devices must first accurately measure power before they can manage it, but
precision power measurement solutions are often costly and require multiple ICs or power configurations to measure different rails hence, Microchip has crafted the new PAC1932/33 devices. Microchip’s PAC1932/33 devices include precisely what is needed to measure power on a single Integrated Circuit (IC), integrating multiple channels in a single package for applications such as Point of Sale (POS) systems, ATMs and building automation. This reduces costs for system designers while also consolidating their Bill of Materials (BOMs), as the measurement of sub 1V to 20V voltage rails normally require separate components to measure each rail efficiently. The devices’ ability to
measure voltage rails under 1V to as high as 32V also relieves developers from having to reconfigure measurement resolution between low and high current load events. As the industry’s only two-channel device with 16-bit power measurement, the PAC1932 can measure without host intervention for 17 minutes, relieving developers from adjusting voltage or current range to measure power and energy. The devices include two 16-bit Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs) that can measure voltage and current simultaneously, enabling developers to extract a true power measurement. As a result, developers can better design systems to efficiently save power.

ROHM Rolls-Out New CMOS Op-Amp, Delivers LeadingClass Low Noise The latest addition of ROHM, LMR1802G-LB is ideal for industrial applications that demand high-accuracy sensing, including sonar and optical sensors
Key Features 1. Easy to use despite low noise results in the industry’s best performing CMOS op-amps This latest product combines ROHM’s superior analog technology covering circuit design (new circuit at the differential input stage), layout (analog design cultivated over many years), and processes (optimized for low noise) to achieve ultra-low-noise. The input equivalent noise voltage density of 2.0nV/√Hz at 1kHz and 7.8nV/√Hz at 10Hz are approximately half that of products on the market, ensuring superior low-noise performance. In addition, in the past when pursuing lower noise in opamps there were problems such as poor phase margin and capacitive load characteristics, as well as oscillation that
made circuit design difficult, but introducing a new circuit at the differential input stage allowed ROHM to achieve industrylow noise along with a class-leading phase margin of 68° and capacitive load tolerance of 500pF. This doubles the detection capability of sensor signals over conventional solutions, enabling accurate amplification of voltages on the order of µV, improving performance with sensors that demand higher precision. 2. Minimizes input offset voltage and input bias current In terms of op-amp configuration, the output voltage should be 0V when the input is 0V, but an offset voltage is often generated as an error. Also, if the sensor’s output impedance is high the sensor output voltage will be affected if the input bias current of the op-amp is large. Consequently, these two error factors must be made as small as possible to ensure optimal performance. Application Examples • Distance measuring equipment utilizing sonar and optical sensors • Security systems, IR remote controls, night vision, and other sets equipped with IR sensors • Devices demanding high accuracy operation (i.e. HDD) • Equipment management systems including flow meters and gas detectors • Other industrial and consumer sets integrating sensors requiring high accuracy detection The LMR1802G-LB offers an input offset voltage of 450µV and input bias current of only 0.5pA (4x and 2x less than conventional products, respectively), providing high accuracy amplification. Pricing: TBD Availability: June 2018 (Samples), October 2018 (OEM quantities)

ROHM has recently announced the availability of a CMOS op-amp featuring the lowest noise in the industry optimized for industrial applications requiring high-accuracy sensing, such as accelerometers used in sonar systems and optical sensors that handle ultra-small signals. In recent years, in addition to IoT devices, sensors are being adopted in a variety of applications from portables and vehicle systems to industrial equipment, to improve functionality and provide advanced control. Used to detect and convert various environmental and physical changes into signals, sensors demand high accuracy, but at the same time peripheral sensor circuitry is trending towards lower voltages to achieve greater power savings. Op-amps are configured at the rear stage to amplify the analog sensor output, but because sensor signals are so weak it is necessary to implement noise countermeasures to ensure high-accuracy transmission. In response, ROHM developed a high noise tolerant op-amp for the automotive market utilizing a vertically integrated production system that leverages original analog design technologies and processes. ROHM has introduced an op-amp that delivers the industry’s best performance against external noise optimized for consumer devices and industrial equipment. The LMR1802G-LB developed utilizing ROHM’s market-leading analog technology covering circuit design, processes, and layout, reduces input equivalent noise voltage density by half (2.9nV/√Hz at 1kHz, 7.8nV/√Hz at 10Hz) compared to conventional products, significantly improving the detection performance of sensor signals. In addition, best-in-class phase margin (68°) and capacitive load tolerance (500pF) provide excellent stability (difficult to oscillate, easy to handle). This enables accurate amplification of voltages in the order of µV, ensuring support for industrial and consumer applications requiring high-precision sensing.

Q
Why businesses need the right tools, policies, and procedures to bring risks under control? With business expansion it gets more difficult to watch out for every dollar and every person who has access to the corporate coffers. And with seemingly daily changes to the regulations that govern business keeping an eye on your spending and keeping up with policies and procedures can seem virtually impossible. To avoid T&E frauds, the simplest answer lies with using the corporate card. When travellers charge expenses directly to the company, they’re not accidentally entering incorrect numbers into their expense reports and leading auditors astray. There’s little room for error, and the firms get far more detailed and accurate figures. So once again, you can focus on fraudulent behavior. Shaping your T&E policy around corporate card usage simplifies matters for a company and makes things easier for your employees, as well. VANTAGE
With these types of policies in place— and a workforce that understands them—businesses can save money and separate well-intentioned employees who make mistakes from a few who look to outsmart the system. Adopting a zero-tolerance policy and shining a light on fraudulent behaviour are the best things businesses can do to deter further fraud. And utilizing a thirdparty auditing lets you be the big brother without having to be the bad guy. With global business travel and varied spend on the rise, it is imperative to have the right tools, policies, and procedures in place.

Any recent successful case study you want to underline? Ericsson, a telecommunications giant, with a presence in 175 countries and offices in 108 countries, was using multiple expense management systems – from manual to Web-based. This was costly and inefficient for Ericsson to manage. The company lacked control and had no means to track travel spend. Ericsson looked for an on-demand
global solution that would reduce costs and universally meet the needs of its employees. After a brief pilot, Ericsson implemented SAP Concur, a Web-based, on-demand service that streamlines and automates the expense process. As a global expense management solution, SAP Concur drives significant costs out of the expense process by automating the processes Ericsson uses to manage employee spend. In just the matter of a few months, Ericsson implemented SAP Concur in India, Sweden, Netherlands, and Germany. Prior to using SAP Concur, Ericsson employees manually entered VAT, travel allowance, and currency rates into expense reports. With SAP Concur, VAT is automatically recorded and reported in both local and foreign VAT, travel allowance reimbursement rates are automatically presented, and currency rates are automatically captured. SAP Concur made it easy for Ericsson’s employees to complete their expense report quickly, with minimal effort. With SAP Concur’s powerful reporting capabilities, Ericsson now has the
ability to monitor the suppliers that employees frequently book. With SAP Concur, management can quickly analyze employee spend data to optimize supplier negotiations, spend management and fraud reduction.
Q
How is spend management disrupting the service-based sector especially public sector? Within the public sector, many spend management and travel solutions that were adopted by organizations decades ago are now outdated, making financial control difficult. Implementing a modern, easy-to-use spend management solution can increase adoption and visibility into spending to insure visibility into every aspect of spending. With valuable insights, organizations can prevent duplicate payments, flag unusual transactions, or lead more informed negotiations to take advantage of discounted supplier rates. Automated compliance enforcement alerts allow public sector organizations to more easily adhere to government regulations - a process which is typically very time consuming.

Salesforce Announces the Next Generation of Service Cloud Einstein
Next generation Service Cloud Einstein: Create engaging service experiences with AI and guided processes Built on the world’s #1 CRM, Service Cloud Einstein Platform Services Include: • Einstein Bots for Service supercharges agent productivity by responding to customers immediately, automating routine service requests, gathering basic information from customers so agents don’t have to, and seamlessly
handing off customers to the right agent at the right time. And because it uses machine learning and natural language processing, Einstein Bots improve with every interaction. • Lightning Flow for Service empowers companies to deliver guided service processes that take customers through self-service interactions and guide agent workflow (i.e. fulfilling requests, resolving issues). Lightning Flow removes the guesswork from customer interactions, and delivers connected service experiences with a complete view of the customer. • Einstein Next Best Action leverages rules-based and predictive models to provide agents with intelligent, contextual recommendations and offers for customers. Einstein Next Best Actions are delivered at the moment of maximum impact—surfacing insights directly within the Service Cloud console that lead to faster case resolution, increased customer loyalty and upsell opportunities. The combined power of these innovations transforms customer service. For example, if a customer loses their credit card while on vacation and goes to the company website for help, an Einstein Bot initiates a chat session. After gathering the initial details (e.g. who are you, what happened?), the bot seamlessly passes the chat thread to a human agent to expedite the card replacement process. A Lightning Flow workflow takes the agent and customer through a step-by-step process to resolve the problem. Assessing the situation based on the conversation and customer history, Einstein Next Best Action suggests to the agent that she inform the customer that they qualify for free travel insurance. The agent informs the customer about the insurance and closes the loop. The customer leaves the interaction fulfilled
and happy with the service experience, while the agent quickly proceeds to the next case. Salesforce AppExchange and Partner Ecosystem Extend the Power of Service Cloud Einstein With Salesforce AppExchange companies can extend the power of Salesforce with more than 5,000 partner solutions, including Lightning apps, components, data, industry specific solutions and more. Because it is powered by the Salesforce Platform, partners can build Einstein Bots for Service training packages, as well as Lightning Flow for Service and Einstein Next Best Action strategies for the AppExchange that are customized for industries and specific use cases. Companies looking to accelerate their success with tailored solutions built on the Salesforce Platform can work with key global system integration partners such as Appirio, Bluewolf and PwC. Additionally, with Salesforce's strategic partnership with IBM, joint customers can leverage the power of AI to make smarter decisions, faster than ever before. “Artificial intelligence alone will not drive your business forward—AI must be connected to CRM data and guided processes so companies can create seamless experiences that put customers at the center,” said Bill Patterson, SVP and GM, Service Cloud, Salesforce. “Today is a big step forward in empowering our customers with an easy way to provide guided, intelligent service at scale." And Einstein Next Best Action empowers agents by delivering intelligent recommendations and offers for customers. The Rising Tide of Customer Expectations Today, 80 percent of customers say the experience a company provides is as important as its products, yet many customer service organizations are unable to rise to the challenge. Too often data exists in silos across an organization, preventing service agents from having a complete view of the customer. In addition, business processes are not set up to deliver frictionless customer experiences. For companies to truly compete on service, they must find scalable ways to quickly resolve routine queries, navigate complex processes, and leverage intelligence to deliver outstanding, connected customer service experiences.

GDPR enacts stringent protection and processes for handling particular types of PII medical information. In general, an organization may collect and process personal medical information only if it is necessary for patient treatment and diagnosis, and with the explicit consent of the patient.

The GDPR is changing more than data compliance—it’s changing the way businesses operate—affecting how and when they interact with the data of EU residents. One industry that will be held to higher standards is healthcare. The healthcare industry can expect a variety of new challenges when it comes to gathering and protecting the personal data of European Union residents. The new legislation aims to build upon common and current personal information protection, working to ensure that data is protected across all processing activities and endpoints.
How Can Healthcare Organizations Comply with the GDPR? In a latest exchange of notion with Jyoti Gazmer, Sub Editor of BIS Infotech; the security veteran, Rajesh Maurya, Regional Vice President, India & SAARC, Fortinet enumerates the impact of GDPR in the healthcare Industry. Edited Nub.

• D ata Portability: The right to retrieve and reuse personal data, for own purposes, across different services. GDPR also introduces a new obligation on organizations to notify relevant authorities of any personal data breach likely to result in a risk to “the rights and freedoms of individuals”. Where that risk is deemed ‘high’, notification must also be extended to the affected data subjects. Notifications must be made ‘without undue delay’ and where feasible, within 72 hours of the event discovery. Note, one way to ensure that a breach would not likely result in a risk to EU resident data owners is to encrypt all collected personal data. If this strategy is pursued, organizations need to consider their ability to support large amounts of encrypted traffic in transit and at rest. The GDPR acts as a means of protecting personal data for EU residents across the globe. This means that any business or organization that processes or stores the data of EU residents are subject to GDPR rules and regulations—regardless of whether the healthcare facility physically operates in European Union countries.
BISINFOTECH.COM 49
A Closer Look at the General Data Protection Regulation The GDPR is a fundamental shift in the protection of an individual’s data and privacy. Prior to this legislation, personal data was widely viewed as the property of the businesses who collected and stored the information. In May, however, any personal data of European Union residents will be seen as the individual’s property, and the GDPR provides rights regarding the access and usage of their data by organizations. At its core, the GDPR defines the rights of the individual as they relate to data protection. These rights can be broadly summarized as follows: • Informed Consent: The right to be clearly informed why the data is needed and how it will be used. Consent must be explicitly granted and can be withdrawn at any time. • Access: The right to access, free of charge, all data collected, and to obtain confirmation of how it is being processed. • C orrection: The right to correct data if inaccurate. • E rasure and the Right To Be Forgotten (RTBF): The right to request erasure of one’s data.

How Can Healthcare Organizations Comply with the GDPR?
In order for healthcare organizations to comply with the GDPR, there are a number of requirements, some healthcare specific, that must be adhered to. All “personal data,” defined as “any information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person,” has to be gathered in accordance with Article 5 of the GDPR, meaning data must be: • Collected for specified, legitimate and explicit purposes and not processed in a way which is incompatible with them. • Processed lawfully, fairly and in a transparent manner. • Processed to ensure appropriate security of data. • Adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary in relation to the purposes for which it is processed. • Accurate and kept up to date. • Kept in a form which permits identification of data subjects for no longer than is necessary for the purposes for which it is processed. • Controlled by a controller who is responsible for the data and able to demonstrate compliance. As mentioned earlier, healthcare organizations have a unique set of higher standards to adhere to. Specifically, certain personal data—known as genetic data, data concerning health and biometric data—can’t be processed unless it falls into certain categories. Before we dive into what those categories are, we should define the three types of healthcare-related personal data subject to the specific regulation. Genetic data: personal data relating to the inherited or acquired genetic characteristics of a natural person that give unique information about the physiology or health of that natural person and that result, in particular, from an analysis of a biological sample from the natural person in question. Data that concerns health: personal data related to the physical or mental health of a natural person, including the provision of health care services, which reveal information about his or her health status.
Biometric data: personal data resulting from specific technical processing relating to the physical, physiological or behavioral characteristics of a natural person, which allow or confirm the unique identification of that natural person, such as facial images or dactyloscopic data. While the GDPR prohibits the unnecessary collection of personal data by healthcare organizations, there are several exceptions that allow for its collection. In order for healthcare organizations to collect specific personal data, the collection has to fall into one or more of the following categories: 1. Data has been given with explicit consent from the owner 2. Processing data is necessary to the “vital interests” of the patient/provider 3. Processing is needed for the purposes of preventative or occupational medicine 4. Data is necessary for the good of the public health What are the Penalties for NonCompliance? Failure to comply with the GDPR can mean serious fines for healthcare organizations. Fines are calculated based on a number of factors but can range up to the greater of €20 million ($24.8 million) or four percent of global annual turnover. The word “greater” here is important. If compliance failure or a data breach is discovered and penalized, the higher-generating sum at the time of the fine will be used. This means that if four percent of global income for the healthcare organization was higher than 20 million Euros, the fine would be the amount equal to four percent of global income. How Can Healthcare Facilities Brace for the GDPR? If your healthcare facility finds itself having to meet GDPR requirements, there are several actions you should be taking to help ensure that you’re compliant: First, you should audit your facility to determine the personal data that needs to be reorganized for compliance. Make sure you include
insight into what data is collected, how its collected and the purpose for collecting the data. Second, ascertain how the data is being processed, stored, transferred and shared inside/outside your facility. Organize and consolidate any possible information silos to ensure that the necessary information isn’t being lost in badly implemented processes or technologies. Once you’ve audited information protected under the GDPR, you should invest in educating and training staff on the revised data life cycle requirements; updating the procedures for gathering, using, storing and destroying personal information. In addition, data security and privacy teams need to be prepared should any information be audited or requested by an EU resident. Next, you should review your cybersecurity capabilities. Determine if your organization is capable of detecting and reporting data breaches within the required 72-hour window. Breach detection is very difficult, even for the largest enterprises. In fact, the majority of data breaches is detected by third parties – usually by customers or law enforcement. If it can’t, you should update your cybersecurity capabilities to help protect your organization against breaches across the attack space. Finally, you should commit your organization to rigorous risk-based cybersecurity program characterized by continuously assessing your GDPR relevant data life cycle and the organization’s overall security posture. While compliance does not necessarily mean secure, given the heavy fines associated with the GDPR, consistently checking for weaknesses within your organization ensures a strong foundation for response should an EU citizen request his or her information, submit a complaint or, worst-case scenario, if sensitive data has been breached. n

Retail Industry going IoT way? IoT is driving innovation and new opportunities by bringing every object, consumer and activity into the digital realm. At the same time, leading businesses are making similar changes within their enterprises by digitizing every employee, process, product and service. The IoT will be particularly disruptive to the retail industry. • Improvising and refining the customer experience to next level The IoT presents an opportunity for retailers to develop a vastly improved ecosystem that connects physical and digital worlds, allowing bidirectional, real-time interaction with consumers both inside and outside the store • Optimizing supply chain operations Connected devices and products provide retailers with the opportunity to help optimize operations in the face of a more complex supply chain, increasingly important digital channels, and a more demanding customer. RFID technologies, for example, can improve the precision of inventory tracking. • Introducing new channels and revenue streams We’re already seeing examples of incremental revenues retailers can help achieve by expanding into new channels or creating new, high-margin product categories for the emerging “connected home.” Household appliances, home security and comfort products, even health and wellness products are all becoming part of the IoT ecosystem. Some retailers are taking further advantage of the wide array of connected products by becoming an integration “platform.” The concept behind these platforms is to make it easier for customers to make all of their in-home devices talk to one another.
IoT challenges for retailers and the future journey The biggest challenge with the IoT is the rapid evolution of the scope and variety of technologies which can be used in the connected ecosystems. In retail specifically, the biggest and immediate challenge for companies to overcome is managing, analysing and acting on the reams of data pouring in from all connected devices. The time to unleash IoT is now. It is the first step to transform your store for 21st century retail. It addresses one of your most pressing challenges – how to provide a personal, seamless and
differentiated experience for customers who do not think in terms of channel? Retailers that take the lead in this space stand to gain an important advantage in an already competitive environment. Early adopters will be positioned to quickly deliver IoT enabled capabilities that can increase revenue, reduce costs and drive a differentiated brand experience. Our own thinking on this continues to evolve and we expect to witness additional perspectives further. One thing is however clear – to truly build value from IoT investments, retailers need to be expansive in their thinking, consider innovative applications and

The draft tower policy pending for notification for more than 2 years imposes issues such as restriction on the location of towers such as restriction on the location of mobile tower installation, requirements of multiple documents and NOCs, non-availability of Government land & buildings, exorbitant high fees ranging from 50,000 to 10,000 rupees, lacks provision for the deployment of in-building solutions and Cell on Wheels etc. This enormous delay will impede addressing the growing data demands and roll out of futuristic technologies such as 5G, Internet of Things, Virtual Reality and Artificial intelligence etc. While on the other hand, the Centre Government have been sedulous on the development of a robust telecom infrastructure which is evident by the notification of the Right of Way rules, 2016. The policy has to enable features such as no restriction on the location of telecom towers, single window clearance mechanism, defined time-period for approvals, an appointment of Nodal officers, nominal administrative fees and deemed approval etc. extensively supporting the Digital India mission. The draft Karnataka tower policy is not aligned with the Right of Way rules, 2016 issued by centre government. While highlighting the issue, Tilak Raj Dua, Director General, TAIPA said, “The state of Karnataka should align its draft policy with the Right of Way rules issued in November 2016 by the Department of Telecommunication to ensure deployment of critical telecom tower infrastructure. Issues such as call drops, network outage and connectivity gaps
etc. are being faced by the users’ due to the absence of comprehensive mobile tower installation policy. We hope the new government will certainly address these issues and facilitate robust telecom infrastructure in the state.” The industry has also highlighted through a number of representations and submissions to respective authorities for notifying a comprehensive tower policy which addresses the provisioning of seamless telecom infrastructure rollout aligned with the RoW rules, 2016. The visionary programmes of the government such as Digital India and Smart cities are severely impacted due to the absence of uniform comprehensive tower policy aligned with RoW rules dated November 2016 issued by central government. It is worth highlighting that other Indian states such as Kerala, Jharkhand, Haryana, Odisha, Rajasthan and Assam have aligned their tower policies with the central government guidelines.
Further, Dua added “The development of robust telecom infrastructure is the bedrock for state to leapfrog towards Smart and Digital Karnataka. This is because all the transformational reforms such as Digital India, e-governance, Smart Cities and cashless economy etc. depends upon the connectivity provided by telecom infrastructure. Hence, we are sure that State authorities would align their state policy with RoW policy dated November 2016 which will eventually help to realise the dream of Digital India.” Today, Karnataka has more than 29000 mobile towers mounted with more than 1 lakh 22 thousand BTSs serving 64 million wireless telecommunication subscribers. In the near future, Karnataka state needs to double the number of towers and BTS count in order to connect the unconnected, to ensure seamless network connectivity and rollouts future technologies such as 5G, Internet of Things, Virtual Reality and Artificial intelligence etc.

Recently, Reliance Industries’ acquisition of US telecom software firm Radisys highlighted the necessity and revenue opportunities for carriers in nextgen services such as Internet of Things (IoT), a market which is sought to be worth well over $9 billion by 2020 in India. The telcos are keeping in mind that data tariffs have dropped 90% while voice tariff by about 60% in the past couple of years, resulting in gross revenue falling 8% on-year to Rs 2.6 lakh crore in 2017, and are thus shifting focus from core telecom services to emerging technologies and have begun tapping areas such as IoT and Machine-toMachine (M2M) more aggressively said a report by ET. Rohan Dhamija, Head, India and the Middle East for consultancy firm Analysys Mason, said “Telcos will need to go beyond their comfort zone of offering services beyond connectivity which only forms 20 to 25% of the IoT value chain in terms of revenue.” “There’s a need for an immediate focus to be able to participate in this IoT opportunity. From the experience on OTT (over-the-top, or app) wherein, telcos were late in participating, telcos realize that they have to be aggressive and need to invest now rather than wait for the ecosystem to mature,” he added. He further explained that the requirement for investment and the addressable revenue opportunity will increase as telcos move from connectivity to end-toend solution provider. As per consultancy firm Deloitte, the IoT units in India are expected to see a growth of 31 times to reach 1.9 billion in 2020 from its current base of 0.06 billion. In terms of revenue, this opportunity could represent $9 billion by 2020 from $1.3 billion in 2016 — a growth of 700%. Government of India though is aiming to create a $15 billion IoT industry in India by 2020. Counterpoint's senior analyst Hanish Bhatia commented that the key areas in the IoT industry for telcos could be vehicle tracking, smart appliances, smart metering and security & surveillance. "Besides smart cities, telcos also plan to target retail, manufacturing, healthcare
and automotive." RIL’s latest buy will accelerate Reliance Jio's push to build in-house development capabilities for fifth generation (5G) technology and IoT. Its rival and leading telco, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone, on the other hand — as part of their established enterprise businesses — are now offering IoT services. In a major push, Airtel is in advanced talks with US telecom major Verizon for a broad partnership around IoT. It has already initiated several IoT projects at its Manesar network centre, and is establishing a new centre in Bengaluru to work on these technologies. Vodafone, which is in the process of merging operations with Idea Cellular, has tipped IoT to be one of its fastest growing segments and will bring some
global IoT use cases to India, besides launching a narrowband IoT network, mirroring a similar one by Jio. Jio though appears to be the most aggressive of the telcos in India, having already set up a narrowband IoT network which is commercially active in a few cities, including Mumbai. It has now followed it up with the acquisition of Radisys. The company’s vice president, Aayush Bhatnagar, who is currently looking after the software development around domains such as 5G networks, IoT platforms, blockchain and SDN/NFV platforms, will be heading the Radisys team. Dhamija said that Indian telcos see a huge IoT opportunity even in the short to medium term, especially with the arrival of 5G due to low latency and higher capacity benefits. 5G technology, according to analysts, will support billions of connected devices, and digitisation of different sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, and smart cities, thereby creating a huge demand for IoT and M2M devices which will be connected by the telco infrastructure.
