ROHM COMMERCIALIZES FIRST 1700V SIC POWER MODULE ROHM announces the development of a 1700V/250A rated SiC power module. The new ROHM 1700V/250A rated SiC power module that provides highest level of reliability optimized for inverter and converter applications such as outdoor power generation systems and industrial high power supplies. In recent years, due to its energy-saving benefits, SiC is seeing greater adoption in 1200V applications such as electric vehicles and industrial equipment. The trend towards higher power density has resulted in higher system voltages, increasing the demand for 1700V products. However, it has been difficult to achieve the desired reliability, and so IGBTs are typically preferred for 1700V applications. In response, ROHM was able to reach high reliability at 1700V, while maintaining the energy-saving performance of its popular 1200V SiC products, achieving the world’s first successful commercialization of 1700V rated SiC power modules. The BSM250D17P2E004 utilizes new construction methods and coating materials to prevent dielectric breakdown and suppress increases in leakage current. As a result, high reliability is achieved that prevents dielectric breakdown even after 1,000 hours under high temperature high humidity bias testing (HV-H3TRB). This ensures high voltage (1700V) operation even under severe temperature and humidity environments. By incorporating ROHM’s proven SiC MOSFETs and SiC Schottky barrier diodes into the same module and optimizing the internal structure make it possible to reduce ON resistance by 10% over other SiC products in its class. This translates to improved energy savings and reduced heat dissipation in any application. Going forward, we will continue to expand our lineup and at the same time offer evaluation boards that allow easy testing and verification of our SiC modules.

1. Achieves the highest level of reliability under high temperature and high humidity environments This latest 1700V module introduces a new packaging method and coating materials to protect the chip, which allows achieving the first successful commercialization of a 1700V SiC Module, passing the HV-H3TRB reliability tests. For example, during high temperature high humidity testing the BSM250D17P2E004 exhibited superior reliability with no failures even when 1,360V is applied for more than 1,000 hours at 85°C and 85% humidity, unlike conventional IGBT modules which typically fail within 1,000 hours due to dielectric breakdown. To ensure highest level of reliability ROHM tested the leakage current of the modules at different intervals with the highest level of blocking voltage 1700V. 2. Superior ON resistance contributes to greater energy savings Combining ROHM’s SiC Schottky barrier diodes and MOSFETs within the same module makes it possible to reduce ON resistance by 10% compared to other products in its class, contributing to improved energy savings.

MICROCHIP EASES AUTOMOTIVE INFOTAINMENT NETWORKING Microchip Technology has announced the industry’s most efficient automotive infotainment networking solution that supports all data types, including audio, video, control and Ethernet, over a single cable. With the addition of mobile services, cross-domain communication and autonomous driving applications to in-vehicle networking, infotainment systems require a more flexible solution for transporting packet, stream and control content. Existing implementations are either costly and cumbersome, or too limited in bandwidth and packet data capabilities to support system updates and internetworking requirements. Hence, to address this need Microchip has brought the Intelligent Network Interface Controller networking (INICnet) technology Intelligent Network Interface Controller networking (INICnet) technology is a synchronous, scalable solution that significantly simplifies building audio and infotainment systems, offering seamless implementation in vehicles that have Ethernet-oriented system architectures. Audio is a key infotainment feature in vehicles, and INICnet technology provides full flexibility through supporting a variety
of digital audio formats with multiple sources and sinks. INICnet technology also provides high-speed packet-data communications with support for file transfers, Over-The-Air (OTA) software updates and system diagnostics via standard Ethernet frames. Thus, INICnet technology supports seamless integration
of Internet Protocol (IP)-based system management and data communications, along with very efficient transport of stream data. INICnet technology does not require the development and licensing of additional protocols or software stacks, reducing development costs, effort and time.
MEDIATEK WINKS HELIO P90 "AI" CHIPSET TO QUALCOMM After recently showcasing MediaTek's Helio P70 chipset, the Taiwanese chip company is reportedly known to be working on its next premier mid-range SoC, dubbed as Helio P90. The company has been lately sharing glimpse of the chip on Twitter. The Mediatek Helio P90 is expected to feature "groundbreaking AI" flaunting more power, precision and efficiency. The AI bit is definitely believable (at least for a mid-range chip) when you take into account the result that the also not announced Helio P80 was able to achieve in a dedicated benchmark - it was second only to Qualcomm's upcoming top of the line SoC. Just on the verge of Qualcomm’s big announcement on December 4, MediaTek seems to be teasing their competitors and large market that they are nowhere behind in the league of perennial innovation. We also saw the Helio P80 come second on the AI benchmark result, beaten by the Snapdragon 8150. So it should be pretty easy for the Helio P90 to surpass Qualcomm’s flagship chipset.

LITTELFUSE UNVEILS NEW POWER SIP RELAY IXYS Integrated Circuits Division, now part of Littelfuse introduced the CPC1984Y, a 600V, Normally Open Power SIP Relay, rated for up to 1A DC/1Arms continuous load current, twice the load current of the company’s most popular power relay. This high-reliability device uses optically coupled MOSFET technology to provide 4000Vrms of input-to-output isolation. In fact, the CPC1984Y SIP Relay offers the best combination of load voltage and load current available with a 4000Vrms isolation voltage. The optically coupled outputs, which employ IXYS ICD’s patented OptoMOS architecture, are controlled by a highly efficient infrared LED. With a typical on-resistance rating of just 0.51 Ohms and a maximum rating of just 0.66 Ohms, the CPC1984Y offers significantly lower on-resistance than

VISHAY PIONEERS IRDA-COMINTEL ESTABLISHES 1.1 K CR CHIP PLIANT IR TRANSCEIVER MODULE DESIGN FACILITY IN BANGALORE Vishay Intertechnology announced that the company is providing designers with a new device for IrDA-compliant infrared (IR) transceiver modules in the standard 6.8 mm by 2.8 mm by 1.6 mm footprint. Vishay Semiconductors' TFBR4650 offers a reliable drop-in replacement for devices from other manufacturers. In cases of discontinuation of competitors' parts, this drop-in replacement prevents any need for PCB redesigns. The device introduced by Vishay consists of a PIN photodiode, infrared emitter, and control IC in a single package. Compliant with the latest IrDA physical layer standard for IR data communication, the module supports data rates from 9.6 kbit/s to 115.2 kbit/s (SIR) for wireless transmission in gas and power meters, cell phones, microphones, robots, and mobile medical devices. Wooing Make in India and in understanding the strong demand of next-gen chip design in India, The US chip giant, Intel has established its latest state-of-the-art design house in Bangalore at an investment of Rs 1,100 crore. The design facility dubbed as ‘SR4’, will expand Intel’s R&D presence in India, has been built at Intel’s 44-acre campus in Bengaluru. “The Rs 1,100-crore centre will design chips and power them to work for new technologies like cloud, client, graphics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G,” Intel India country head Nivruti Rai said. It has 6.2 lakh sq ft of space, including 1 lakh sq ft of lakh sq ft of lab infrastructure and will house technologists who work on cutting-edge engineering across hardware and software. The design facility was inaugurated by Manoj Sinha, minister of state (IC) for communications and minister of state for railways and Bob Swan, CFO and interim CEO of Intel Corporation. Swan said, “This year Intel celebrated its 50th anniversary, marking a half-century of innovation that has profoundly chan ged the world. This milestone is an opportunity to embrace a new Intel, a different, fast-paced, global company that’s adapting, growing and building the future. The India design hub is the largest outside the US, Rai said. The $63-billion semiconductor behemoth has invested about Rs 30,000 crore (about $5 billon) in its India operations over the last 20 years since it entered the sub-continent to leverage its skilled talent pool, according to a report shared by BS.

Keysight Technologies releases the results of the Keysight 2018 State of 5G survey. The survey reveals that companies primarily invest in 5G technology to secure market leadership, meet customer demand, and take advantage of flexible and scalable networks. The Keysight 2018 State of 5G Survey shows more than half (54 percent) of companies surveyed are already adopting 5G technologies with 46 percent citing securing market leadership early in the 5G lifecycle as the primary driver for their investments. And, more than two thirds of respondents said they are actively seeking 5G test solutions to accelerate the development or rollout out of 5G technology. “To meet customer demand and establish market leadership, equipment manufacturers and service providers need early access to 5G test tools and capabilities,” said Kailash Narayanan, vice

Higher reliability and lower latency to create the biggest impact from 5G technology president and general manager of Wireless Devices and Operators at Keysight Technologies. “Keysight’s close collaborations with industry consortia and market leaders, deep technical experts, and end-to-end 5G test solutions are empowering the mobile industry to accelerate 5G product design development and commercialization.” Most respondents (63 percent) of the Keysight survey expect higher reliability and lower latency to create the biggest impact from 5G technology. These aspects are important to address new business opportunities. Respondents indicated that the top three benefits of implementing 5G
technology are faster networks, greater IoT enablement, and connected car proliferation. By leveraging new and existing technologies including wider bandwidths in millimeter-wave frequencies, massive MIMO and virtualized networks, 5G will deliver a multitude of benefits to meet customer demand across a wide range of vertical industries. “The fact that many respondents are looking for test solutions means that those inventing and deploying the technology want to ensure their implementations perform as expected while securing a market leadership position,” stated Roger Nichols, 5G program manager at Keysight Technologies. “Many of these technologies, or combinations of technologies, are new to the radio communications world, which is why the industry is looking for tools to help them analyze, design, measure, and validate designs that rely on these technologies.”

5G BASE STATION ANALYZER FOR LARGE-SCALE DEPLOYMENTS Viavi Solutions announced the launch of CellAdvisor 5G, the next-generation base station analyzer used by mobile service providers globally, which is capable of validating and troubleshooting 5G radio access. In addition to industry-first features addressing 5G TF and 5G NR standards requirements, CellAdvisor 5G includes usability enhancements, developed with customers, that further improve technician experience and deployment speed. The instrument was successfully used in the rollout of the first commercially available 5G network in the United States. Leading mobile service providers are moving from lab verification of 5G technology to field trials, and are now announcing scale deployments to support commercial service as early as 2018. Monitoring and controlling of the environmental parameters is vital in a production environment since it has a direct impact on productivity of humans as well as machines. We are looking in to providing modules which can improve the

OMRON has a very strong and proven capability when it comes to promoting the adoption of smart energy solutions in India. They say, “Energy saved is equal to energy produced”, and we all know that our power sector has been grappling with issues like AT&C losses, power theft etc. We have innovative solutions for the power utilities who are one of the key stakeholders in the whole energy segment. Of late, we have been trying to build up a strong interface with them so as to showcase the utility of our solutions in managing the AT&C losses which has been counted as one of the biggest challenges in improving the overall performance of the power sector. We have Tamper Detection Sensors which can be embedded in smart meters. These sensors can detect various kinds of meter tampering such as ESD, Jammer, Magnet, Shock, Tilt and Temperature – many of which are considered non-detectable. The sensor not only detects but also measures the value of tampering. The information rel.ated to tampering is then shared with the utilities in real time which can be used to take corrective measures.

What is the role of connected technologies and IoT in India's industrial development and what challenges and opportunities does it underlie? The IoT based solutions are one of the most notable aspects to create a ‘Connected Factory’. A connected shop-floor with connected supply chains and connected customers is the need of the hour. IoT is necessary to create a seamless interface between all machine layers and information technology leading to transparent & robust production lines based on real-time data based production management enabling the manufacturers to successfully cope up with key challenges, as they scale up the value chain, such as: reducing downtime, decreasing frequency of sudden failures and improving changeover efficiency. The bag of opportunities is extensive comprising of unprecedented levels of productivity, reliability, perfection, uniformity, flexibility, customized solutions, design & energy optimization, finest asset utilization, big data & analytics, worker and machine safety, zero-defect production and above all a perfect match with global standards. Yes, there will be challenges related to a c c e ptanc e of the te c hnology, interoperability, standards and regulations in place, gap between value and cost expectations, etc. But we are hopeful that things will change down the line and will ramp up the market need for sensors.

Imagine a world without lights. That’s not a picture many would like to draw. Jumping to the current scenario, this technology has come a long way from fluorescent tube lights to now, what has become a very popular buzzword everywhere dubbed as LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes). Betting big in 2018, LEDs has made a huge breakthrough and has taken up all the major household and industrial sector worldwide. With the Indian Government and its various initiatives, LEDs have found its place even in the most remote areas of the country. This is huge and undeniable, that it has a long way ahead in the near future.Hence, BIS sat with industry veterans, J.K Jain, Chairman and MD, Fiem Industries and Sumit Joshi, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Signify India (formerly known as Philips Lighting India), with the intend to deduce some of the major potential of the LEDs Lights in India.

1) Smart Homes and LED are synonymous
One of the major trends that are very easily predicted is the LED lights finding its place at future smart homes. Because of its long operational life and the energy efficiency, LED lights are bound to make our smart homes, smarter. There are LEDs which are already able to communicate and automatically adjust to the users light preferences and conditions. The prognoses of the LED lighting technology is that, by 2022, each and every homes will have lighting technology that are predictive of any hazardous situations.

LEDs are going to be way advanced in the coming future. LEDs will not just be smart for the smart homes, but will have an added feature that thinks for the human. The idea of concentrating on energy savings would just become secondary. In India, HCL is rather a new terminology and has floated in market very recently. With increasing value of lighting to society, energy efficiency supplemented with light for sustainability with intelligent lighting systems and light for wellbeing, HCL looks to be a great future ahead not only for the growing technology but also for the economy and job creations.”
3) LEDs Getting Ahead for Automotive Industry
Automotive Lighting is yet another sector where LEDs are becoming an integral part. From the flashy lightings to currently, a systematic technology that helps the drivers in many ways, LEDs sure have come a long way. In the future, LEDs are going to have an Advanced Forward Lighting Systems (AFS) that ensure safety and security to the drivers. A shift to OLED technology is also going to be the trend for automotive sector. Adding more to this, J.K Jain explains, “Having lead Fiem Industries Ltd. for forty years and making it an Industrial Giant for Automotive Lighting, I feel that the driving decisions are based on what people receive through the visual senses and an estimate based on these researches shows that perhaps ninety percent (90%) driving decisions are based on light stimuli. Therefore, it is a concern of both the drivers and automotive manufacturers that the best combination and usage of visible light has to be made to eliminate the problems inherent in darkened conditions and improved nighttime visibility. This will provide drivers better perception capabilities and greater awareness of potential issues that may confront them. Therefore, HCL will also become a central stage for automotive lighting also.”

Li-Fi is a technology for seamless wireless communication between devices using a light source like LED bulbs to

transmit data. It’s a way forward for India to have also worked for technology as as such. Silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs offer great promise for maximizing the efficiency of power converters due to their extremely low switching losses. However, their short circuit robustness has long been a topic of discussion when determining if these devices are practical solutions for real-world power conversion applications. Higher short-circuit current density and smaller thermal capacitance due to relatively smaller die sizes means that SiC MOSFETs’ short circuit withstand times are shorter than those of similarly rated silicon IGBTs. Fortunately, a recent study on 1200 V, 80 mΩ SiC MOSFETs suggests that proper gate drive design that supports faster response time can protect SiC MOSFETs from short circuit damage. This study will discuss the short circuit capability of 1200 V, 80 mΩ SiC MOSFETs. Results gathered from destructive testing performed under various operating conditions are presented and explained, as well as design tradeoffs from both application and device perspectives. Additionally, another segment of this study compared the performance of various off-the-shelf gate drive ICs with de-sat protection functions.

When comparing Si IGBTs and SiC MOSFETs with similar current ratings, SiC MOSFETs have 5-10 times higher current density under short circuit conditions. Higher instantaneous power density and smaller thermal capacitance results in faster temperature rise and lower short circuit withstand time. MOSFET saturation current is primarily controlled by the design of the channel region. Although a shorter channel and higher on-state gate voltage are desirable for reducing on-resistance, they also increase the saturation current and reduce short circuit withstand time. This trade-off between on-state resistance and short circuit current is inherent in the design of SiC MOSFETs and is best resolved by designing gate drives with a faster response time than traditional IGBT gate drives offer. This allows designs that use SiC MOSFETs to accommodate circuit conditions without compromising the on-resistance or die size of the devices.

A test circuit (Figures 1a and 1b) was designed for evaluating the short circuit capability of 1200 V, 80 mΩ SiC MOSFETs (Littelfuse LSIC1MO120E0080) (Figure 2) under various working conditions. High-bandwidth, high-voltage passive probes were used to measure drain-to-source (VDS) and gate-to-source (VGS) voltages; a Rogowski coil was used for device current (IDS) measurement.

Figures 4 and 5 show the short circuit withstand time and critical energy results for destructive failure. The

dissipation also increases significantly. Consequently, the temperature rise is much faster, resulting in a lower short circuit withstand time.

Figure 7 shows the test results with gate voltages of 15 V and 20 V for a drain voltage of 600 V. These results indicate that the peak current is strongly dependent on the gate voltage, decreasing from 250 A at a 20 V gate voltage to 100 A at 15 V gate voltage, which supports the design trade-off theory, regarding the driving voltage / on-resistance / short circuit peak current and withstand time relationship, discussed earlier in this article. Additional factors that were studied but proved to have no noticeable effect on the short circuit withstand time of the device were the external gate resistance and ambient temperature of the device.

Critical energy under 600V DC drain voltage Figure 6 illustrates the short circuit test results under various drain voltages from 200 V to 800 V at a gate voltage of 20 V. Although the peak current is similar, at around 250A under all conditions, the short circuit withstand time dropped from more than 20 µs for 200 V drain voltage to 3.6 µs for 800 V. As the DC bus voltage increases, the instantaneous power
Protecting a SiC MOSFET from short circuit failure requires the gate drive to detect the overcurrent condition and turn off the MOSFET within its withstand time. Several off-the-shelf driver ICs developed for Si IGBT devices offer an integrated de-saturation (de-sat) protection function that monitors VDS during the on-state and turns the device off if an overcurrent event occurs. The same driver ICs can be used for short circuit protection of SiC MOSFETs if the driver IC can respond quickly enough. Figure 8 shows the circuit used to implement the de-sat

functionality with the various driver ICs. The fast action Si diode (DD) blocks VDS in the off-state, the Zener diode (DC) protects the de-sat pin during the switching transition, and the capacitor (CB) controls the blanking time to avoid false triggering during the switching transient.

Short Circuit Protection in Half-Bridge Configuration
Finally, the SiC MOSFET and the gate driver IC with the longest response time were tested together under short circuit conditions in both single device and half-bridge configurations. Figure 10 shows the test waveforms during shoot-through transients with an 800 V DC bus voltage. In the half-bridge configuration, the top device was kept on during the whole transient and bottom device was driven by a gate driver with de-sat functions. Figure 8. Right: Shoot-through protection in a half-bridge configuration. The results in Figure 10 show that the SiC MOSFET can be turned off safely under both conditions. The results also show that in the half-bridge configuration, the DC link voltage is shared by two devices and the actual voltage per device is much lower than the DC bus voltage, which provides more margin to the protection circuit reaction time. If both the bottom and top devices have shoot-through protection functions, either one can protect the whole circuit.

De-sat protection transient Due to SiC MOSFET’s fast switching speeds and the required optimized power loop layout, the amount of time that the device voltage and current take to reach steady state after a transient event is much shorter than that of an IGBT. Thus, the required blanking time for the de-sat functions of the driver IC used in a SiC-based design should be much shorter as well. To protect SiC MOSFETs, a CB of less than 100 pF is usually selected and the blanking time can be as short as 200 ns to reduce the total response time of the driver IC.

Table 1 compares the performance of different driver ICs with a 33 pF blanking capacitor. The results indicate that each of the ICs can protect SiC MOSFETs during shootthrough within 1–4 µs. Each of them also has “soft turn-off” features, which turn off the device slowly under short circuit conditions to protect both the MOSFET and the driving ICs.

This article has presented the short circuit capability of 1200 V SiC MOSFETs and solutions for overcurrent protection using offthe-shelf driver ICs. Several design considerations were discussed to ensure accurate measurements. Test results indicate that the short circuit capability of SiC MOSFETs is highly related with drain voltage and gate voltage, but it is not sensitive to case temperature and switching speed. Longer withstand time can be achieved by reducing gate driving voltage or reducing bus voltage, but these solutions will reduce the performance of SiC MOSFET. A better solution is to implement overcurrent protection to sense device overcurrents and turn off the device safely. Commercial IGBT drivers with de-sat protection can protect SiC MOSFETs effectively, but the circuit needs to be optimized to ensure that the total response time of de-sat protection is short enough to protect SiC MOSFETs. The performance of various off-the-shelf gate drive ICs with de-sat protection functions was compared and a gate drive design that can protect 1200V SiC MOSFETs under real-life short circuit conditions was demonstrated. The big black screens in theatres showcasing machines co-leading a society seems virtually inevitable today, sparing no ‘mad scientists’ tyrannically trying to overrule the organizational apparatus of human sense. 2018, as a year shall be remembered not just because of the augmentation of perforating “Smart and Interactive Devices” but a much-talked headline wrapping social humanoid robot dubbed, ‘Sophia’. From ‘Date with the Humanoid’ to its controversial social intelligence, it extensively swayed global thought leaders. Enticed by the glorifying, ‘Sophia’ and Enterprises, Industries wooing digital transformation, I apparently jotted our last-leg story of 2018 on ‘Learning & Articulating Intelligence’. I named it as the ‘Seven Sages of Tech Industry’ shall not be a foreword babble as it not just demystifies the Darwinism of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning but it also tries to lucid on the possibilities quantifying 2019 for this nascent technology.

Most notably, from the public's point of view, are improvements in language translation, speech recognition, and computer vision. On the negative side, machine learning models are sometimes misused, implemented badly, trained on biased data or used in places where they shouldn't. Additionally, some machine learning based systems are somewhat easy to attack, and not-at-all easy to defend - such as review and ratings sites, comments sections, and social network recommendation systems.

Technologies like the internal combustion engine created far more jobs than they took away. Will AI be similar? The answer depends on what scaffolding (e.g. regulation, corporate behaviour) we choose as a society. Also, what of the people whose jobs AI will cannibalise? A survey done in 2017 on consumers perception of AI showed only 34% of respondents thought they interacted with AI technologies. But when probed further into their device or service usage habits, it found that 84% actually used AI in one form or the other – albeit most didn’t realize it. In 2018, AI is now available in very visible forms, either through a chatbot or an Alexa device, and consumers feel its tangible benefits – most in the form of more personalized service and recommendations that enhance the brand experience. Now high level personalization is the norm rather than the exception both online and in person. Machine learning techniques have been used across most verticals for decades already. Obvious examples include things like financial modeling, marketing and business analytics, and many areas of scientific research. As far as the impact that machine learning will have on the way companies do business, the explosion in the amount of data businesses have to work with has spawned new types of analytic tools. Businesses across all verticals are using these tools to perform more complex analysis methods on the data they work with. The drive for businesses to become more data-driven will continue.
Artificial Intelligence is being used to create tools and automation to aid experts in the cyber security field. Artificial Intelligence techniques allow cyber security researchers to efficiently process and visualize analyse large data sets, and high-volume streaming data, on-the-fly, in order to find anomalies and patterns indicative of malicious behaviour. Machine learning models, deployed on both clients and back end systems, are already being used to detect anomalies in computing infrastructure. By using of powerful artificial intelligence-based tools and techniques, cyber security researchers are able to free up their time to work on creative solutions to problems they’re seeing in the field. That knowledge is then used to create even better tools and models for the future.

Organisations need to treat every node within the larger IT framework as a point of defence. Given how rapidly the threat landscape is evolving, I genuinely feel that not using AI and machine learning in cybersecurity is simply no longer an option. Human-only teams cannot maintain the 24x7 security vigil that modernday enterprises require, making real-time threat detection and response a virtual impossibility. Integrating AI and machine learning takes the burden of processing the security data off the shoulders of human security experts by automating threat detection and triaging. This leaves human teams freer to respond to more critical threats and breaches.

In the field of cyber security this means processing massive amounts of data and filtering it into more readable information sets for security teams, so they can find issues long before a human would normally be able to notice a pattern. This means that IT teams can leverage ML for quickly uncovering potential cyber threats on their networks. There is also the possibility of ML being used by hackers to identify weak points in cyber defence. Today successful hackers leverage people as the weakest point of any network and use social engineering techniques to break into networks and/or to defraud individuals and businesses. Although these hackers may be able to use ML to identify the social engineering practices that result in the best penetration over time, the use of ML to identify exact weaknesses on a network are still very limited in scope. Therefore, the potential upside in increasing cyber security and resilience using ML cannot be overlooked. The use of ML to support cyber security and to create defences as a counter measure against malicious intent is a real benefit.

At Genetec, we have been looking at ways to apply methods of machine learning and data science to our products for improving efficiency and provide greater insight for many years. We are using both supervised and unsupervised ML techniques to improve the performance and value or our solutions for customers. Supervised ML is when computers are “trained” to properly classify inputs via feeding the application with structured datasets that correlate thousands of possible inputs and then over time the application is able to apply an “understanding” to new inputs based on historic data or patterns. 1. Introduction

The Internet of Things (IoT) is being adopted in an expanding number of fields to improve business operations, increase convenience, detect/prevent abnormalities, and enable automated operation by collecting, analyzing and using data from a variety of devices. In recent years, AI technology capable of automatically analyzing acquired data has taken center stage, but for IoT the most important aspect is how accurately data can be collected. In

this case the sensor plays an essential role. A wide variety of sensors exist, from environmental types designed to detect the ambient temperature and humidity to sensors capable of detecting equipment vibrations and the movement/presence of people. The ROHM Group develops a broad range of sensors utilizing 3 key technologies: 1) MEMS device technology (i.e. silicon deep etching), 2) Analog front end technology for processing weak signals output from sensor elements, and 3)

monitoring environmental conditions such as temperature, brightness, and color, while our interface lineup includes capacitive switches and resistive touch controllers (Fig. 2). We are also able to offer smaller packages by combining analog circuits for sensor control and leveraging one-chip and chip stack technologies.

3. Position detection using beacons
LOGY
The following is an example of using sensors to solve problems with IoT beacons. A beacon is a device that transmits signals at certain intervals within a range of several meters to tens of meters, and are used to send coupons or other relevant information to terminals such as smartphones and tablets. They can send periodic one-way signals that allow smart devices such as smartwatches to receive data without the need for pairing with a tablet or phone. This convenience is believed to be largely responsible for its increased adoption in recent years. Beacons are often used in locations such as offices and factories. Attaching beacons to people and devices makes it possible to improve operating efficiency by communicating location information with installed receivers. However, because this method estimates the location based on the strength of the signal delivered from the beacon to the receiver, problems such as a communication failure or positional error are common. For example, despite the presence of a person carrying a beacon in the room containing Receiver A, the person is incorrectly detected as being in the room containing Receiver B (Fig. 3). This is because when several receivers are installed inside a building, it is impossible to tell which receiver a beacon is closer when the wearer is situated halfway between two receivers.

2. ROHM’s IoT-targeted sensor devices
Sensor devices developed at ROHM can be generally divided into 3 types: motion sensing, environment sensing, and interface devices. For motion sensing, in addition to geomagnetic and barometric pressure sensors, we also develop sensors that detect the movement of people and objects, such as accelerometers and gyroscopes utilizing ROHM Group company Kionix’s advanced MEMS technology. For environment sensing, we provide sensors capable of

4. Developing beacons using ROHM sensor technologies In order to solve problems related to erroneous detection,

we developed a solution that uses motion data in addition to signal strength to estimate the location of a person or item. The configuration combines an accelerometer, barometric pressure sensor, geomagnetic sensor, microcontroller, and Bluetooth® Low Energy module from ROHM Group company LAPIS Semiconductor. When the beacon transmits a periodic signal, this solution simultaneously sends data from individual sensors as well as processed data from all sensors. Utilizing the built-in accelerometer and algorithm in combination with the beacon’s signal strength results in increased location detection accuracy.
accuracy (Fig. 5). • P iezo-resistive Barometric Pressure Sensor (BM1383AGLV) ROHM’s BM1383AGLV compact (2.5mm x 2.5mm x 0.95mm) barometric pressure sensor is equipped with a temperature correction algorithm that makes it unnecessary to carry out external temperature correction using a microcontroller, reducing computational load. This makes it ideal for applications such as relative altitude detection, floor detection, and calorie calculation (Fig. 6).
The following describes the sensors utilized in the beacon. • 3-Axis Accelerometer with Pedometer Algorithm (KX126-1063) Kionix’s KX126-1063 is a 3-axis accelerometer that delivers high sensitivity, high accuracy, and low power consumption in a thin, compact 2.0mm x 2.0mm x 0.9mm form factor. Integrated motion detection algorithm makes it possible to detect gestures such as tapping along with free fall and device orientation. In addition, when analyzing vibration, component analysis can be performed using FFT or the like over a wide frequency band, and acceleration information can be output at a maximum data rate of 25.6kHz. A pedometer function is also included that reduces design load and enables immediate use by simply configuring the sensor, eliminating the need to run an algorithm on the microcontroller side after obtaining the acceleration value(Fig. 4).

• Geomagnetic Sensor Utilizing a Magnetic Impedance Element (BM1422AGMV) The BM1422AGMV from ROHM is a 3-axis geomagnetic sensor housed in a compact 2.0mm x 2.0mm x 1.0mm package. Since 2013 we have worked with Aichi Steel to develop a special amorphous wire. The result is 10,000 times greater sensitivity over conventional Hall effect sensors along with lower noise and power consumption. In smartphones and wearable devices this enables indoor navigation and contributes to long-term use by increasing azimuth

5. Application examples of beacon using sensors
The use of beacons with sensors for
high-accuracy location detection not only applies to the horizontal plane. As mentioned earlier, beacons are often used for monitor worker locations. In this area there is also a need to determine location in the vertical direction, such as at different heights. Previously, a barometric pressure sensor alone would be used to calculate the relative altitude. A commonly used method is to record the atmospheric pressure on the first floor of a building and set that value as the standard pressure, then move to the second floor and again record the atmospheric pressure, using the difference in values to confirm that a change in floors has occurred. However, barometric pressure sensors are affected by ambient changes in atmospheric pressure. When weather conditions suddenly worsen, the sudden change in pressure results in the sensor erroneously detecting that the person has ascended/descended. Therefore, by combining readings from an accelerometer that can detect movement with the change in atmospheric pressure, altitude calculation can be achieved that takes into account fluctuations in ambient pressure. This allows ROHM’s beacons to monitor worker position not just horizontally, but vertically as well. In addition, an accelerometer and geomagnetic sensor can be paired to create an electronic compass that can detect the direction a person or object is facing. Combining various sensors in different ways allows users to achieve a range of functions.
6. Conclusion
Through innovative sensor development, ROHM has been able to deliver a wide lineup of sensor devices optimized for a variety of market needs. Furthermore, by developing modules that combine not just sensors but wireless technologies and proposing sensor fusion solutions that incorporate multiple sensors, we support improved energy savings and productivity in factories and the early adoption of sensors for IoT. And going forward, we will contribute to the realization of a smart society by developing products and solutions that meet the demands of not only the IoT market, but the automotive and industrial equipment sectors as well.

security system, generic cabling system, etc. Because of the compact of the residential houses, the controllers of these systems have the general character- compact size, as small as the common power socket. Therefore, the power supply for these controllers also should be small in size to meet the layout requirement of the controller. Moreover, it will be more convenient for people to decorate the house to be beautiful and comfortable with these compact controllers and panels.

While, the disadvantages are: 1) low efficiency, 2) narrow range of input voltage, 3) value of load is easy to be affected, 4)uneasy to test the circuit. The worst point is the non-isolation between the input and output, it may easily lead to electric shock which may cause harm to personal safety. Illustration of industrial frequency transformer step-down circuit of the controller panel is shown as pic 3. Input and output circuits are same as RC step-down solution as both of them need to protect the voltage and back-side load. The difference is that the power is converted by transformer. Supplying by AC input with frequency of 50HZ Transformer step-down the input power, and then using rectifier and filter circuit and LDO to get a regulated voltage for the load.
Two common solutions of power supply
Among the traditional design solutions of power supply in controller circuit, the most common solutions are: RC (resistance-capacitance) step-down and the industrial frequency transformer step-down. We will talk about the features of these 2 solutions with pic2 & pic3. Illustration of RC step-down circuit of the controller panel is shown as pic 2. We can know that the power supply is for the main controller, signal-isolation, and display circuit. The solution shows that, a surge-protection circuit at input side is to ensure the reliability and stability of the power supply circuit, and then the RC step-down circuit converts the voltage,

The advantages of this solution are: 1) easy to test, 2) simple in circuit structure, 3) safety level upgraded as the input and output is isolated by transformer, and 4) lower cost. Its disadvantages are 1 ) limitation of input range, 2) bulky in size and low in efficiency, which is against the demands of smart home as compact size and energy-saving.
A typical AC/DC power module for smart home
The above two solutions have different disadvantages. RC (resistance-capacitance) step-down circuit may cause harm to personal safety and the industrial frequency transformer step-down circuit don’t satisfy the request for compact size and energy-saving. Isn’t A Destination But A Continuous Journey Cybersecurity is an occurrence representing a complex socio-technical challenge for an organization but requiring the involvement of individuals. Although cybersecurity is one of the most important challenges faced by an organization today, the visibility and public awareness remain limited. Challenges around cybersecurity are not new and have actually been around since the beginning of computing. However, it is now a topic that everyone talks about today. It is a board, public safety, livelihood and a personal topic. Now, we need to effectively address industry challenges to preserve the computing environment in the future. Today, most cyber security efforts are focused on what is referred to as the “EMR” model of educating, monitoring, and remediating. This approach is effective but is essentially like the game of “whack-a-mole,” where the core underlying risks and issues are never solved and keep popping up. While EMR is essential, the innard foundation of a secure and virtuous computing experience requires being more proactive. Proactive means ongoing, real-time, continuous self-testing and self-assessment a focused education as it pertains to best practices. This, combined with a continued evolution in the new technologies, will help mitigate and ensure more trust in the future. Still, it will be very difficult to solve all cybersecurity challenges due to the technical dependencies that exist and will exist for the immediate future. Safe and secure computing can occur with a connected, comprehensive approach to security hammered in each of
the leading digital disruption bars, from the Internet of Things, to conversational artificial intelligence, to blockchain and distributed ledger technology, to wearables and mobility. Industry focus, industry standards, close adherence to best practices, and the constant ability to randomize to protect digital identities is on the horizon and needs to continue to gain acceleration. Introduction Deploying automated guided vehicle (AGV) systems for material handling allows factory owners to enhance operational efficiency and increase productivity. However, system stability can be a key concern. Given that the warehouse AGVs are constantly on the move, wireless clients installed on the moving AGVs should not only be able to roam seamlessly between wireless APs, but also endure the vibration resulting from the AGVs’ movements. Moreover, to ensure smooth plantwide communication, industrial-grade Ethernet switches that support industrial protocols and can tolerate field-site environments are required. One of our customers, a leading provider of turnkey material handling systems in the US, provides automated conveyors and automated guided vehicles (AGVs) to large factories that produce corrugated folding cartons, bottles, and cans. Their key requirement was to build a highly reliable system to ensure nonstop plant operation. The industry-leading Allen-Bradley EtherNet/IP programmable logic controller (PLC) was used for the control systems, and Moxa’s EDS-516A Ethernet switches, which support the EtherNet/IP protocol, were selected to implement two reliable industrial networks for the automated material handling systems. TESLA FOUNDER ELON MUSK TOPPLED BY ROBYN DENHOLM After a row took over Elon Musk’s twitter posts, the Electric Car maker company has removed Musk from Board Chair with immediate effect. Tesla said Robyn Denholm has taken Elon Musk's place as chair of the company's board. Denholm, who has served on Tesla's board since 2014, will be leaving her role as CFO of Telstra to focus on Tesla full time. The 55-year-old Australian will temporarily step down as chair of Tesla’s audit committee until she quits Telstra. In late September, Musk, who remains chief executive and is also Tesla’s biggest investor, agreed to step down as chair for three years and pay a fine in a deal with the US Securities and Exchange Commission over tweets he made about
taking the firm into private ownership. The financial regulator accused Musk of fraud and misleading investors, and fined him and the company $20m each. “I believe in this company, I believe in its mission and I look forward to helping Elon and the Tesla team achieve sustainable profitability and drive longterm shareholder value,” Denholm said.
“Robyn has extensive experience in both the tech and auto industries, and she has made significant contributions as a Tesla Board member over the past four years in helping us become a profitable company,” said Musk. “I look forward to working even more closely with Robyn as we continue accelerating the advent of sustainable energy.” Directors also will create a permanent committee to ensure implementation of the terms of the SEC settlement, which include setting up procedures and controls to oversee Musk’s communications -including his tweets. ADVANCED QUANTUM TECHNOLOGY TO COUNTERACT GPS HACKING
The world’s most ubiquitous navigation technology, GPS — or Global Positioning System — is vulnerable to hacking. This exposes potentially dangerous security risks in critical systems, from air traffic control to satellite communications. Professor Amr Helmy (ECE) from University of Toronto is working to harness cuttingedge approaches in quantum sensing to reduce our current reliance on GPS and introduce a more secure, accurate approach to mapping and navigation. “Quantum sensing technology introduces ground-breaking approaches to measuring things,” said Helmy in a statement. “It’s an exciting time because it’s a challenging time. But there are emerging needs in both instrumentation technologies and in security, where quantum sensing is the answer.” Quantum sensors have capabilities that extend beyond the reach of conventional
systems of measurement: they rely on the ‘squeezing effect,’ whereby photons have the uncertainty inherent to their attributes minimized, to precisely measure the position of a location. To develop new navigation tools, Helmy is using a design approach patented by his lab to integrate chip-based sources of quantum-squeezed light into existing optical gyroscopes. Quantum sensing also provides a solution to security breaches. Unlike GPS platforms, quantum-enhanced navigation instruments do not rely on satellites to work, which makes them less vulnerable to hacking or spoofing - when a location falsely masquerades as something else. GPS hacking and spoofing have made headlines around the world in recent years, from researchers successfully hacking a yacht's navigation to bring it off its programmed course to the discovery

Hyderabad has become a global destination for defence companies looking to establish manufacturing or research units. The city has attracted biggies such as GE, Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Sikorsky in the past. Lockheed Martin is carrying out three projects in Hyderabad- making F16 Wings, empennage parts for C-130 and metal-to-metal bonding. In exclusive talks, Jayesh Ranjan, principal secretary, Industries & Commerce, Telangana, said, Hyderabad has been attracting defence establishments since 1960. The city today hosts a dozen defence labs and public sector units. From 2000 onwards, there has also been a growth in the private sector participation in defence. Over the years, aerospace and defence sector has evolved in and around Hyderabad. The aerospace and defence cluster growth is happening with a lot of interest in the second phase of aerospace park now. Existing companies are looking to expand their operations and new companies are coming. In December, another major international project will be announced. This is a good sign, he said. To boost the opportunities in the sector, Ranjan adds, “Hardware prototyping hub T-Works can create a prototyping

centre exclusively for defence so that more innovation can happen. Defence sector will be potentially a big user of the infrastructure at T-Works. SMEs can’t have such facilities as it is too expensive. Many times, prototyping doesn’t lead into products so there is an affordability associated with it.” T-Works in addition to defence is seeing interest from fibre glass, plastics, electrical goods and other conventional sectors. Kalyani Rafael Advanced Systems (KRAS), a joint venture of Kalyani Group and Rafael Advanced Defence Systems, Israel, is exploring new products to serve Indian defence wings as well as opportunities in the automotive space. Currently, the manufacturing facility is integrating and testing SPICE 2000 kits (electro optics/GPS-guided guidance kits for converting air-droppable unguided bombs into precision guided bombs) for Indian Air Force. Aerospace and defence are the sectors where self-reliance has become extremely important to reduce import dependency by enhancing production and creating more jobs. The Defence Procurement Policy has given a push for indegenisation since 2016 onwards, but there is a need to bring more MSMEs into the fold, both in terms of their
participation and reforming outsourcing norms, point out experts at the second edition of Defence Conclave organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry in Hyderabad recently. CII Telangana chairman Sanjay Singh speaking on the occasion, said, there remain certain challenges in the sector particularly with the MSMEs not having robust linkages in the ecosystem. Cost of testing products is still high, which is a concern. Jayesh Ranjan, principal secretary, Industries & Commerce, Telangana said, “Hyderabad has seen emergence of large number of MSMEs in the defence sector. There are 983 companies operating in this segment today, primarily concentrated in Sanathnagar, Kushaiguda and Balanagar besides other areas.” If the MSMEs step up their technology adoption, there could be more opportunities in the aerospace and defence sector. The way automotive sector has embraced latest technologies, defence sector can also gain from it. Telangana government has always supported the MSMEs with the needed incentives and Hyderabad will continue to offer its value proposition for the industry, he added.

ISRO LAUNCHES HYSIS, 30 SMALL SATELLITES FOLLOWS The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) is reported launchED India's earth observation satellite Hyper Spectral Imaging Satellite (HysIS) and 30 small satellites from eight countries on November 29. The space agency said the 45th flight of PSLV launched from the First Launch Pad (FLP) of Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR, Sriharikota. ISRO said that the Indian rocket Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle Core Alone variant (PSLV-CA) will fly with the 380 kg HysIS satellite and 30 overseas satellites together weighing 261.5 kg. The PSLV rocket is a four-stage launch vehicle with alternating solid and liquid stages/engines. The entire mission will be completed in just over 112 minutes after the rocket’s liftoff, said Isro sources. Just over 17 minutes into the flight, the PSLV rocket will place the HysIS satellite with a mission lifespan of five years in 636 km polar sun synchronous orbit. After that, the rocket will be brought to lower altitude to about 503 km from 642 km, said the space agency. The Indian space agency has earlier done
a satellite mission for over two hours in January 2018. HysIS mission is to study the earth’s surface near infrared and shortwave infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The co-passengers of HysIS include 1 micro and 29 nano satellites from eight different countries. All these satellites will be placed
in a 504 km orbit. While 23 satellites are from the US, the balance is from Australia, Canada, Columbia, Finland, Malaysia, Netherlands and Spain. These satellites have been commercially contracted for launch through Antrix Corporation Limited, the commercial arm of Isro.
ODISHA AIMS A GRATIFYING A&D POLICY 2018 After some strong projective push from the Central Government for Aerospace and Defence, Odisha lately unveiled its Aerospace And Defence Manufacturing Policy 2018. Assuring to congregate public-private partnerships, the policy allows for a capital subsidy of Rs 100 crore per company, for the first three defence OEMs (original equipment manufacturer) to set up base in Odisha. The only stipulation is that these companies will have to make a minimum investment of Rs 1,000 crore in plant and machinery, and hire at least a thousand employees. “The policy aims to carry forward the process of industrialisation in the state through the promotion of aerospace and defence manufacturing enterprises, generate employment opportunities and provide value-addition," said Sanjeev Chopra, principal secretary (Industries), Odisha government. The policy also
promises 24-hour power supply to all manufacturing units and dedicated industry feeders when production commences. Is A&D Industry Gratified? Chief Executive of Lockheed Martin India Phil Shaw said his company would be looking for aviation grade materials in Odisha. The American origin aerospace and defence major offers top-end technologies to Indian Armed Forces. “Odisha provides a robust ecosystem for

We are open to partnerships with small and medium enterprises of the State,” he said. But, now we have indigenised most of our systems. India has developed the best-in-its-class re-entry tracking systems in the world without the support of any other country,” he said. WFP, ALIBABA INK STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT Alibaba and The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) have entered into a strategic partnership to support efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 – a world with zero hunger. Under the framework, Alibaba will provide its leading technology and resources to support the digital transformation of WFP’s operations. In particular, Alibaba Cloud ill collaborate with WFP to develop a digital “World Hunger Map” to monitor the status of global hunger and help enhance the efficiency of operations to support efforts towards the goal of ending world hunger by 2030. WFP’s Executive Director, David Beasley, and Alibaba Partner and Chairman of the Alibaba Foundation, Sun Lijun, signed the agreement at Alibaba’s headquarters in Hangzhou, China. “Alleviating global poverty and fighting hunger is the shared vision of Alibaba and WFP,” said Sun, Chairman of the Alibaba Foundation. “We look forward to joining the global campaign of fighting hunger using our innovative technologies in data intelligence and cloud computing, as well as sharing our experience in China and worldwide. “

Google announced Thomas Kurian, former Oracle President of product development and a respected technologist, is going to head Google Cloud from early next year. The current CEO of Google Cloud Diane Greene will continue through January, working with Kurian to ensure a smooth transition and will remain a Director on the board of Alphabet, Google's parent company according to the sources. Kurian will replace Diane Greene as head of the Cloud division. "Kurian, a respected technologist and executive, will be joining Google Cloud on November 26 and transitioning into the Google Cloud leadership role in early 2019," said Greene said in a statement. Sundar Pichai, CEO, Google, commented, "We're really excited to welcome Thomas whose product vision, customer focus, and deep expertise will be a huge asset to our growing Cloud business," he said. Kurian stepped down from Oracle in September. A member of Oracle's Executive Committee for 13 Years, he led 35,000-people software development team in 32 countries with an R&D budget of $4 billion.

RUCKUS NETWORKS POWERS APAC UNIVERSITY CAMPUSES Ruckus Networks, an ARRIS company, announces that Asia Pacific University (APU) selected the company's indoor and outdoor Wi-Fi access points, SmartZone network controllers and ICX switches, to deliver an exceptional digital experience for students at its existing and new Technology & Innovation Campus. The campus required a completely new network that was fast and reliable but was also able to scale to meet the future demands of its growing student population. APU's network team also faced a challenge of providing satisfactory service levels to stakeholders across both of its campuses, which are located approximately 1.5 km apart. Ruckus Networks -- selected for its exceptional performance, simple configuration, and optimal cost -- will build a complete scalable wired and
wireless network infrastructure to meet the growing needs of APU's expanding student population, connected devices, and bandwidth requirements. APU deployed Ruckus' access points to deliver seamless wireless network roaming across both campuses. These access points are managed by Ruckus' virtual SmartZone (vSZ) controller, which can scale up to 300,000 devices, enabling administrators to expand and adapt the network according to the university requirements. The university also deployed Ruckus' ICX switches which simplified network set-up and management, enhanced security, minimized troubleshooting, and made upgrades easy. This resulted in significant time savings and fewer resources. Also, the ICX switching architecture ensured excellent throughput for the most demanding video, wireless interactive
projection, and unified communications including VoIP, VDI, and mobile applications. APU is also looking at future network upgrades that will help drive innovation, including analytics and insights for indoor location tracking to help administrators track student movements within campus buildings in case of emergencies. Another example is helping lecturers automatically track attendance without requiring students to manually "tap-in" using their student IDs. FORCEPOINT INSTITUTES NEW GCSC IN BENGALURU Forcepoint announced the opening of a new Center of Excellence for Customer Success in Bengaluru, India. The allnew facility provides Forcepoint enterprise customers with 24/7 support services worldwide that help solve complex security challenges while accelerating the adoption of behaviorbased cybersecurity to support their business growth and digital transformation. The CoE is located in the Prestige Blue Chip Software Park, a modern technology complex, where Forcepoint is actively recruiting. 5G TO COVER 1.5 BN SUBSCRIPTIONS BY 2024 5G is expected to reach more than 40 percent global population coverage and 1.5 billion subscriptions for enhanced mobile broadband by the end of 2024. This will make 5G the fastest generation of cellular technology to be rolled out on a global scale, according to the latest edition of the Ericsson Mobility Report. Key drivers for 5G deployment include increased network capacity, lower cost per gigabyte and new use case requirements. North America and North East Asia are expected to lead the 5G uptake. In North America, 5G subscriptions are forecast to account for 55 percent of mobile subscriptions by the end of 2024. In North East Asia, the corresponding forecast figure is more than 43 percent. In Western Europe, 5G is forecast to account for some 30 percent of mobile subscriptions in the region by end of 2024. The uptake of NB-IoT and Cat-M1 technologies is driving growth in the number of cellular IoT connections worldwide. Of the 4.1 billion cellular IoT connections forecast for 2024, North East
Asia is expected to account for 2.7 billion – a figure reflecting both the ambition and size of the cellular IoT market in this region. Diverse and evolving requirements across a wide range of use cases are prompting service providers to deploy both NB-IoT and Cat-M1 in their markets. A look at the India Market – Mobile data traffic in India to quadruple by 2024 The total mobile data traffic per month in India is expected to grow 4 times during the forecast period from 3 EB in 2018 to 12 EB by 2024. The total smartphone
subscriptions in the country will reach 1 billion by 2024 growing at 10% CAGR, whereas the total mobile subscriptions in India are expected to grow at CAGR of 3% from about 1.2 billion in 2018 to 1.42 billion in 2024. Nitin Bansal, Head of Ericsson India and Head of Network Solutions, South East Asia, Oceania and India explained, “LTE roll outs in India will continue and it is expected to be the most dominant access technology by 2024 accounting for nearly 81% of all mobile subscriptions in India compared to 30% in 2018.” Video will continue to drive data usage and we see monthly data usage per smartphone increasing from 6.8 GB in 2018 to 15 GB by 2024 growing at 14% CAGR. India also saw the second highest number of net mobile subscription additions by a country in Q3, 2018, with the addition of 31 million mobile subscriptions. Globally, the third quarter of 2018 saw an addition of 120 million new subscriptions, with China adding 37 million and Indonesia adding 13 million new subscriptions.

Spirent Communications in its latest release noted that Spirent, China Telecom Guangzhou Research Institute and Huawei worked hand-in-hand to complete the functionality and performance verification of FlexE under MAN and 5G scenarios. FlexE technologies are receiving a lot of attention as highend applications, such as high-definition video and highfrequency transactions, are putting an increased demand on the Quality of Service (QoS), Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communication (URLLC), and massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC) scenarios of the 5G network. This ground-breaking test was conducted at China Telecom's Network and Terminal Lab, utilizing Huawei routers and Spirent’s Flex Ethernet test solution as part of the test bed, connected via 100G BASE-LR4 links. Configured in both 100GbE and 100G FlexE modes, the Spirent FlexE Test Module helped generate line rate traffic to verify hard isolation characteristics of a leased line based on FlexE, testing both the forwarding performance of the FlexE channel itself, as well as the performance between FlexE and Ethernet.
