LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Integration of What You Want To Read There has been a literary drone flying across the Industrial tech province. Perhaps, complementing everything over the internet nudging with the world of data is well-assisting the said next-gen miniaturized design evidently to empower industrial electronics. A notion to withdraw the statement on security and the unknown potential of IoT has been given the critic-accolades which our readers might turn the pages in this issue to rethink on these nascent yet powerful technologies. Bis Infotech has been the industry theorist where while reaching to industry makes a new resonation on the true discovery of new electronics under the umbrella of ‘Analog’ past which arguably still makes sense. The strive to bring every innovator under the page-limit is not a practice but endeared with purviews on how every organisation is looping into the deepdiving cold ocean of new innovation. Rovering across BIS Infotech March Issue, BIS with its diligent and strong editorial think-tankers has taken a mile forward throughout the month to extend the dialogue on LEDs future. We would like to extend the gratitude to the literary-veterans of the industry who believe in change through “Literary Innovation”. Artificial Intelligence concords with IT&OT would just be witnessed more than elementary in this Issue. To Put the Punch, Every taught technology of today also makes space in this exclusive issue. We understand the boundless barriers of technology and; “Hope You Give Us More Power To Bring You, What You Actually Want to Read”.

An Easier and More Efficient Way to Keep your LEDs Running
Brighter, Longer!
A high-level overview of power trends in the high power LED market -Chester Firek | Sr. Product Marketing Manager, Vicor Direct-view LED video wall technology is becoming an increasingly popular choice for large-scale displays because of its superior brightness as compared to LCD technology. However, large video displays present a power design challenge—how best to develop an efficient solution that reduces energy losses, minimizes heat generation and is easily scalable? Heat can be a big problem with LEDs. More heat results in excessive temperatures, which rapidly degrades LED luster and longevity. One factor contributing to the heating of a LED panel is the heat losses in converting and distributing power within the video wall; losses both from the power converters and the resistive copper losses in cabling and the printed circuit board. So what’s the solution? Evaluating the merits of different Figure 1: What happens in Vegas... the Fremont Street Experience LED display has 7,552 x 552 pixel resolution with a 2” pixel spacing and consumes 2.2 MW at full brightness. With 12.5 million LEDs, it measures 1,500' x 90' (Image courtesy of Indianapolis Museum of Art)
Not Your Average LED Power Requirements In addition to being brighter, direct-view LED displays are considerably more power-efficient than LED backlit LCD displays because they can produce more light output using less energy (i.e., “useful power”). Nonetheless, they still generate a significant amount of “wasted power” in the form of heat. This may seem surprising as

partitioning options will help identify the best option when designing high-powered LED application.
LEDs are typically cool to the touch. That's because they don't generally produce heat in the form of infra-red radiation, which is detectable by touch. In fact, up to 85% of the energy consumed is dissipated as heat so large-scale LED arrays demand significant power in excess of that converted to light. For large LED panels the LED power dissipation can become significant. For example, the Fremont Street Experience display (Figure 1) consumes 2.2 MW at full
brightness, and requires even more energy by day to combat the effects of sunlight. Even small displays have large numbers of LEDs and consume significant power: for example, a display module from one leading manufacturer contains an array of 80 x 80, i.e. 6,400 total LEDs and requires 300W (5V, 60A). Maximizing efficiency is, therefore, essential in the design of an LED power supply

Power System Design Priorities The power supply system must convert incoming AC voltage to isolated low voltage, high current DC in the most efficient way. Each stage of power conversion adds cost and wastes energy, so minimizing the number of stages is a design priority. Large video walls are composed of many modules linked together, so an efficient design must also scale well with minimum duplication of power conversion stages. What are two of the key design priorities? 1. Minimizing distribution losses – Transmitting power from the power supplies to the LED array over resistive wires incurs power losses in the form of heat, known as distribution losses. The distribution loss for a current (I) is proportional to the square of the current and is given by P = I2R, where R is the resistance of the wire, bus bar or PCB trace; reducing it requires either reducing the current or reducing the resistance of the wire. Reducing the current while delivering the same total power to the load requires increasing the voltage (P = VI). Doubling the voltage, from 24 to 48V for example, reduces the current by 50%, which in turn reduces the distribution loss by 75%. Attempting to achieve the same result by reducing the wire resistance requires quadrupling the conductor cross-section area, which adds weight and cost, and is not very practical. 2. Reducing heating effect on LEDs – As we've already discussed, heat is the enemy of LEDs and inefficiencies in the power design can only make matters worse. Excessive heat shortens the useful life of an LED and causes discoloration. Even worse, the light output declines with increasing junction temperature; an efficient power supply system for LED use must pay attention to each individual component to avoid local hotspots, which can result in LEDs that

not only fail faster, but look dimmer throughout their operating life. This is especially critical in a video wall where not only light quality but uniformity is important. A simple way to improve power system efficiency is to minimize the number conversion stages. For example, removing a conversion stage can improve system efficiency by 5-10%, and depending on the power level can reduce the amount of heat generated into the system. To eliminate a conversion stage a designer needs to select components that can offer high step-down conversion ratios without compromising efficiency.

Power System Components Make the Difference There are a number of ways to partition a power supply system to convert AC mains to low voltage DC for the LED drivers and control circuits. No matter which particular partition is selected, a typical design will include the following blocks: input protection provided by a Thermallyprotected Metal Oxide Varistor (TMOV) or similar device an AC filtering rectification block a bulk AC-DC conversion block including power factor correction (PFC) to maximize the power available from the AC mains, and adhere to strict equipment power factor requirements point-of-load (PoL) DC-DC buck regulation
to generate the final tightly regulated voltage rails. For example (Figure 4), Vicor offers a comprehensive portfolio of products to
simplify the design of power supplies for large-scale video walls. The result is a simple design that minimizes conversion stages and requires few external components.

24V and 12V power distribution have been the most commonly used bus voltages for LED panels. Compared to distribution AC, it removes potentially lethal voltages from the panels and they meet the SELV (Safety Extra Low Voltage) “safe” voltage level for low voltage power supplies. However, a superior option to 12V or 24V is to double the intermediate voltage to 48V (Figure 6). Since 48V is below 60V it still

bus voltage. Distributing AC directly to each panel and converting the AC to DC conversion on each panel would be too costly, too bulky, and is generally not an option for safety reasons. Instead, a single bulk AC-DC converter stage is typically used to supply an isolated low voltage bus voltage to power each individual panel. Figure 5: Standard smartphone next to a PFM, 4414 VIA.

With large panels, the distance from the bulk AC-DC supply to the LED drivers can
It also cuts distribution losses by 75%, which reduces heat generation. A lower operating temperature improves system reliability, and lower current reduces the thickness of the LED panels. Busing a higher voltage with lower distribution losses also allows the video wall to be more efficient which reduces the lifetime operating costs for the end user.
Options for Generating a 48V-Based Design Generating an isolated 48V bus to distribute can be very simple, in addition to the AC input PFM™ a high powered 3-phase ACDC converter could be followed by a Vicor Bus Converter Module (BCM™) to convert 380V to an isolated 48V with peak efficiency up to 98%. A single high voltage BCM is capable of 1.75 kW of power delivery within 63x22 mm size, 2,735 W/in3 power density. Either 48V solution can then be followed by a 48V input Cool-Power buck or buckboost regulators to directly power LEDs or Figure 6: 48V power system architecture (Image source: Vicor) LED drivers. 48V Delivers What 24V Cannot So how do you deliver brighter LEDs that last longer? You explore the merits of several approaches first. Driving thousands of LEDs in a large-scale video display requires an efficient power system to produce the low-voltage, high-current supply needed. Traditionally designers have turned to a PoL solution that uses 24V as the intermediate DC voltage. Increasing the voltage to 48V, though, reaps numerous benefits that 24V just can’t deliver: 1. reduced heat generation / easier thermal management 2. reduced cabling / save costs, size and weight 3. increased LED performance / improved display quality 4. longer panel life / improved reliability 5. higher power efficiency / lower power usage To safeguard your next large-format LED display deployment — keeping them brighter, longer — start with 48V.

TAKING THE EDGE TO
NEW HEIGHTS
Last summer, I had the unique honor of leading Intel’s product delivery of the Intel® Xeon® Scalable platform – our biggest data center advancement in a decade, bringing new levels of performance, agility and security to the data center core. Since the introduction of the Intel Xeon Scalable platform, we’ve seen tremendous customer adoption across enterprise and service provider data center customer environments. It has been incredible to see the entire industry deliver innovation founded on the Intel Xeon Scalable platform, and utilize this innovation to fuel new business opportunity. Today, I’m thrilled to share that we have extended this capability to our Intel Xeon D processor line with the introduction of the Intel Xeon D-2100 processor family, which brings the ground-breaking Intel Xeon Scalable processor architecture to edge applications and other workloads that require power and performance density. As data-driven services are becoming more pervasive and complex, they require more compute and intelligence closer to consumer and commercial “endpoint” devices that are both generating and acting on data at the “edge” (e.g. smart phones, IOT sensors and autonomous cars). By expanding the capabilities of the data center outward to the network edge, solution providers can process more data closer to endpoint devices, reducing application latency and opening up a whole new world of potential services and experiences. The new Intel Xeon D-2100 processor brings advanced intelligence to a lowerpower system-on-a-chip (SoC) for edge environments as well as other applications with space and power constraints, including power-sensitive web tier compute and storage infrastructure. The processor’s SoC form factor is optimized for lower power consumption and smaller size with integrated, hardware-enhanced network, security and acceleration capabilities in a single package. That makes the new processor especially well-suited for such applications as:

Indian LED Market is Still Booming and Not Matured Yet After successfully acquiring, general lighting business unit of Osram, LEDvance – MLS, thereafter has been high-flier in global LED market. With constant innovation in its mammoth R&D facility and portfolio,MLS has prudently managed to tap the potential of the LED market. India power demands are growing dynamically, the need for power-efficient LEDs to light up the country seems to be the only rational discussion for public and private entities. MLS has a strong foothold in the Indian LED market, to that contrast Niloy Banerjee from BisInfotech had a power-pack dialogue with Lawrence Lin | General Manager | MLS on the company’s position in the Indian market and their ahead strategies on-looking on their disruptive technologies. Edited Excerpts. How you see Indian LED market maturing, what scopes does it keep for companies like MLS Co. Ltd. (Forest Lighting)? Indian LED market is still booming and not matured yet. MLS Co. Ltd will still focus on supplying quality LED packages for the local manufacturers. As the applications of LEDs get more diverse, which key sectors are on MLS prime focus? MLS will still focus on supplying LED packages and be a good partner for local manufacturers in India. What are the latest offerings and product portfolio of MLS? 2835(1W 9V) is our main product at the moment. The automobile industry in India is prodigious, with most cars using automotive LED lighting. How MLS Co. LTD. (Forest Lighting) sketch this sector? MLS will keep watch closely, although LED lighting for automotive in India is still rare. The Government of India launched an initiative in 2016 to replace conventional lights by LED lights by deploying 770 million bulbs and 35 million street lights by 2019. With this humongous potential, where would MLS position itself in the Indian market?

As aforementioned, MLS will still be a good partner to the bid winners, and won’t participate the tenders directly. MLS turned heads by acquiring OSRAM making one of the biggest acquisitions in the LED history? How has been the alliance in terms of fostering new market verticals, product portfolio and generating consolidated revenues? Ledvance will keep enhance its branding and marketing all over the world, and MLS will do its best to provide Ledvacne more and more competitive products and support. What will be the strategies of MLS in 2018 to further rev-up the brand in global platform? In addition to what above-mentioned in No.6, for MLS, we will still expand our capacity for LED filaments and RGB displays (signages). What are the trends in LEDs which will edify the LEDs market in 2018? We foresee filament bulbs and related products will be another booster in LED market in 2018, especially in north America and Europe. Though LEDs have hit the mainstream, is price still a concern for its majority acceptance in the Indian market? Although the tender price is quite affordable in India now, we still think price is still a
concern for Indians because consumers here are so price sensitive. The LED industry has been undergoing a radical transformation fuelled by rapid improvisation in semiconductor technology as well as the demand for energy-efficient and sustainable solutions. How is MLS positioned to tap the ‘Smart Lighting’ revolution? Smart lighting still needs so many consolidation from technologies, protocols, applications, we are also learning now. Besides, it’s also highly related to consumers’ living practice change. The market for wireless smart lighting systems is also emerging strongly? How does MLS look into this market? It’s growing, but not strongly. Keep watching. LED market is maturing and many players are squeezing their heads to take the bite? How MLS strategize to be ahead of their competitors? Since MLS is the biggest LED package company in the world, we will dedicate ourselves to improve every details to provide the most competitive products to our customers and help them fulfil their any potentials.

Single 2MHz Buck-Boost Controller Drives Entire LED Headlight Cluster, Meets CISPR 25 Class 5 EMI
Keith Szolusha LED Drivers Applications Manager Analog Devices Inc.
Automobile LED headlight clusters combine high and low beams, daytime running lights, and sometimes signal and clearance lights into a single headlight cluster. The components of the cluster can have vastly different driver requirements, including voltage and current requirements, topologies, power levels or unique dimming functions. Meeting the range of requirements usually means employing separate driver solutions. Using multiple drivers not only complicates BOMs and production; it can make it difficult to meet EMI standards. Each additional driver adds its high frequency signals to the EMI mix, complicating EMI qualification, troubleshooting and mitigation. Although the headlight cluster for each automobile make and model may be outfitted with a creative variety of LED currents and voltages, they commonly top out at 30W total. With that in mind, there should be a number of drivers that satisfy the power and feature requirements of every string in the cluster. There are not. Such a driver needs to take the relatively wide battery voltage range, and using a buck-boost topology, convert to the wide variety of string voltages. It needs to be small and versatile, to fit easily into the space constraints of the cluster, and produce little EMI, to minimize R&D efforts and eliminate the need for costly metal-shielded EMI cases. It should also be efficient. The Power by Linear LT8391A 2MHz buck-boost controller is unique in satisfying all of these requirements, making it possible to drive the entire headlight cluster, and more, with a single controller. LT8391A 2MHZ SYNCHRONOUS CONTROLLER WITH LOW EMI The LT8391A is the first-of-its-kind 2MHz buckboost controller for LED current regulation. The very high 2MHz switching speed enables

the use of a single, small inductor and small overall solution size for high power LED applications. Unlike monolithic converters, whose power switches are contained within the IC package, controllers such as the LT8391A can drive external power switches with much higher peak currents, such as 10A. Such peak currents would burn up the small IC packages of typical integrated converters. In contrast, a controller with external 3mm × 3mm synchronous MOSFETs can deliver much higher power. These MOSFETs can be arranged in tight quarters with hot-loop capacitors for very low EMI. The unique peak switch current sense amplifier architecture places the sense resistor next to the power inductor, which is outside of the critical input and output hot loops—reducing EMI. Optional spread spectrum frequency modulation (SSFM) further reduces the controller’s EMI. The 2MHz LT8391A 16V, 1.5A (24W)
buck-boost LED driver in Figure 1 boasts as high as 93% efficiency with EMI filters and gate resistors as shown in Figure 2. Efficiency is 1%–2% higher with the optional EMI components removed. With small 3mm × 3mm MOSFETs and a single high power inductor, the temperature rise for this converter is low, even at 24W. At 12V input, no component rises more than 25ºC above room temperature. At 6V input, the hottest component rises less than 50ºC with a standard 4-layer PCB and no heat sink or airflow. It continues to run at full 24W load in the face of input transients down to 4.3V; or reduced load current via analog or PWM dimming when the input drops for long periods. The 8A–10A sense resistor makes this high power at low VIN possible.
controller’s 2MHz operating frequency and 24W of power, this buck-boost passes CISPR 25 Class 5 radiated and conducted EMI. Class 5 is the most stringent requirement and the goal of most automotive EMI testing. Converters that cannot pass Class 5 EMI
The LT8391A includes the latest PWM dimming features and open LED fault protection. This synchronous buck-boost regulates current through a string of LEDs with a voltage that may or may not lie within the input voltage range, such as the 9V–16V car battery or a truck battery (18V–32V). It can run down to 4.0V cold crank input and can withstand up to 60V input transients. The LT8391A provides up to 2000:1 PWM dimming ratio at 120Hz and can use its internal PWM dimming generator for up to 128:1 accurate dimming ratio without the need for an externally supplied PWM clock. CISPR 25 EMI FOR AUTOMOTIVE APPLICATIONS The 2MHz LT8391A LED driver in Figure 1 is designed for automotive headlights. It uses AEC-Q100 components and meets CISPR 25 Class 5 radiated EMI standards. Spread spectrum frequency modulation (SSFM) reduces EMI, and also runs flickerfree simulta-neously with PWM dimming as shown in Figure 7. Its small size is highlighted by its small inductor and especially small input and output EMI filters. Large LC filters are not needed for 2MHz converters and only small ferrite beads are used for high frequency EMI reduction. Automotive EMI requirements are not easily met by high power converters. High power switches and inductors, placed on large PCBs next to large capacitors can create unde-sirable hot loops, especially when a large sense resistor is included. The unique LT8391A buck-boost architecture removes the sense resistor from both the buck and boost switch-pair hot loops, enabling low EMI. Figures 3 and 4 show measured EMI of the 24W LED driver of Figure 1. Despite this

BUCK-BOOST FOR MULTI-BEAM APPLICATIONS LED headlight clusters can be both innovative and artistically creative. High beams and low beams can be wrapped up with nifty and distinctive daytime running lights (DRL).
Because the daytime running lights are only needed when high and low beams are off, a single LED driver can be used to power either the high and low beam LEDs or the daytime running lights. This only works if the LED driver has a flexible input-to-output ratio
BISINFOTECH.COM 19
and can both step-up and step-down the input-to-output voltage. A buck-boost design satisfies this requirement. The multi-beam LT8391A buck-boost LED driver in Figure 5 can drive LED string voltages ranging from 3V to 34V. This enables it to drive both a low beam string and create a high beam by adding LEDs to the low beam string. The same driver switches over and drives a higher voltage, yet lower current, DRL. Switching from low-beam-only LEDs to a low/ high beam combo string generates no spike on the output voltage or LED current as shown in Figure 6a. The LT8391A can transition between boost, 4-switch buck-boost, and buck re-gions of operation smoothly. Changing from a small number of LEDs to a multi-beam circuit does this with ease. Switching back from high and low beams to just
(a) low beam to high + low beam

high number of LEDs without an LED spike can be challenging for a converter, but this low beams is also very clean, without any harmful LED spikes, as shown in Figure 6b.
(b) high + low beam to low
Figure 5: LT8391A multi-beam LED headlight cluster solution for low, high, and DRL lights
The same is true when switching to and from the DRL string. Figure 6c demonstrates how the low beam is turned off and the DRL is smoothly connected to the output capacitor. Even the LED current is changed from 1A (high and low beams) to 700mA (8 LEDs DRL) without any issues. Other trim or signal LEDs can be added in as well, and the DRL can be blinked as a signal light. Figure 6d shows how the DRL can be PWM dimmed with the internally set PWM generator and then switched over smoothly to low beams when darkness falls. Automotive environments require robust solutions in the face of short-circuits and open LEDs. Short- and open-circuit conditions are safely handled by the multi-beam solution shown in Figure 6, and reported via the converter’s fault flag.

FE AND QFN PACKAGES FIT TIGHT SPOTS The LT8391A is available in a 4mm Ă— 5mm 28-lead QFN for small size and a 28-lead TSSOP FE package for automotive designs. Both packages have thermally enhanced GND pads for power dissipation of the internal INTVCC LDO from higher voltages. The internal LDO INTVCC regulator of these converters can handle driving four synchronous MOSFETs at 2MHz with about 15nC gate charge. The small size of the LT8391A FE 2MHz 16V, 1.5A demonstration circuit (DC2575A, based on the design of Figure 1) is shown in Figure 7. Only a single 5mm Ă— 5mm inductor is necessary for this high power, versatile application.
CONCLUSION The LT8391A 2MHz, 60V buck-boost LED driver controller powers LED strings in automotive headlights. Its features include its low EMI 4-switch architecture and spread spectrum frequency modulation for meeting CISPR 25 Class 5 EMI requirements. The unique, high switching frequency allows it to operate above the AM band, requiring very little EMI filter-ing. Its small size and versatility enable use in headlight cluster LED strings of a variety of voltages and currents. Table 1. ARM Justifies Not ‘e’ But
'i'SIM
to Slate the Connected Future Aiming to secure identity in future connected devices, ARM has redesigned the future of connected devices by rolling out iSIM. Wearables, smartphones of many tech giant like (Apple and Google) have tried the successful future mainstream concept of eSIM replacing traditional SIMs in coming time. ARM well-known for its dominance in the chip world has lately buzzed new fame by unveiling iSIM. ARM has a vision of a trillion connected devices by 2035, and each of these devices will need a secure identity, enabling stakeholders to establish trust – for example, allowing a service provider to trust its device base so it can authenticate devices, provide value added services and if needed, issue security updates. Traditional SIMs cannot change ownership after they are deployed in a device, and require physical access to change mobile network operator (MNO). In our shift to a world of billions of connected devices across smart cities, connected rural environments and digitally transformed industries, many of these devices will benefit from cellular connectivity, but physically making SIM changes is not scalable or even possible.
The integrated SIM (iSIM) is known to provide a way for IoT devices to have cellular identities. The new technology is also said to be GSMA Embedded SIM Specifications compliant. Terming iSIM? Unlike an eSIM which is separate from the device’s main chipset and modem, iSIM combines everything into a single SoC. So you have the main processor, modem, and SIM as a single component. ARM says the SIM is stored in a secure enclave with enhanced hardware security like its Arm CryptoIsland. The advantage this brings is a significant reduction in production cost. ARM in its official release writes that the evolution of embedded SIM (eSIM) and more recently integrated SIM (iSIM) form factors is essential for providing secure identity to cellular IoT devices. In combination with an on-chip security enclave for enhanced hardware security (such as Arm® CryptoIsland), this will allow the integration of an MCU, cellular modem and SIM identity into a single IoT SoC to significantly reduce device costs. • Arm Kigen OS provides a scalable, low footprint and GSMA compliant software stack to enable full integration of SIM functionality into IoT SoC designs • Arm Kigen remote provisioning server
solution offers flexibility with a modular design for easy integration with MNO and IoT platforms Forecasts predict up to 4.4B IoT devices will be cellular-enabled by 2025 (Machina, 2017). This solution enables SIM identity with its associated security levels - at a much lower price point and with greater flexibility of deployment. It's an important step in enabling operators, silicon providers and module vendors to realise the potential of cellular IoT and is already receiving support from key ecosystem players including BT, SoftBank and Sprint. Secure identity is a critical principle of Platform Security Architecture (PSA) from Arm, the first common industry framework for building secure connected devices, which we launched in late 2017. PSA is a robust system architecture covering both hardware and firmware, pulling these common security principles into a set of system requirements and interfaces. The Kigen product family adheres to the security and immutable identity principles outlined by PSA. This technology will unlock new levels of cellular IoT integration, enabling new services, business models and revenue streams for all cellular IoT ecosystem players.

Bluetooth 5 & Bluetooth Mesh: Enabling Use Cases For ®
Industry 4.0
In December 2016, the Bluetooth consortium (Bluetooth Special Interest Group, SIG) rolled out Bluetooth
5, the latest version of the Bluetooth core specification. This 5th revision, which I present here, includes a number of groundbreaking enhancements. In addition to the Bluetooth 5 specification, the consortium released the specification for Bluetooth meshin June 2017. Bluetooth mesh is a software enhancement that can run on any Bluetooth low energy solution; it does not require Bluetooth 5. In my opinion, the features provided by Bluetooth 5 and Bluetooth mesh are the most substantial enhancements to Bluetooth technology since its introduction in 1998. They will enable a whole host of new use cases, some which are of specifically relevant to Industrial IoT applications.
-Pelle Svensson, u-blox Malmö Bluetooth 5 Bluetooth 5 provides three main feature improvements compared to the preceding release: • twice thedata rate– from 1Mbps to 2Mbps • four times therange • eight times the advertising packet size (beacons) Let’stake a closer look at each of these three new features. Increased data rate The 2Mbps physical rate (PHY) doubles the amount of data that can be transmitted per second compared to the preceding revision of the specification. While sending data using Bluetooth 5 draws slightly more power than previously, transmission timesarecut to half. As a result, the same amount of data can be sent with just over 50% thetotal power required by Bluetooth v4.2. In addition to fasterdata transmission
28 BISINFOTECH.COM
rates, shorter transmission times result in improved co-existence with other 2.4 GHz radios (including other Bluetooth low energy connections) as the radio is active for a shorter duration.
Figure 1 Power consumption Bluetooth 5 2Mbit/s PHY
Extended range By extending the range of Bluetooth signals, the Bluetooth SIG is seeking to extend the reach of Bluetooth low energy tocover entire homes. Two newmodulation options, 125 kbps and 500 kbps, extend itsrange up to
four-fold compared to thecurrent Bluetooth low energy specification. In line-of-sight, the range of Bluetooth signals is expected to exceed 1km range using the same amount of power. The Bluetooth 5 specification further increases maximum output power to 20 dBm compared to today’s 10 dBm. This enables even greater distances between Bluetooth 5 devices, of course at the cost of increased power consumption. Home automation is obviously a key target application for the Bluetooth SIG going forward. This is clearly indicatedby the fact that two new members of the Bluetooth SIG board of directors were brought in from Philips Lighting and GoogleNest. Key players in the home automation industry see an interest in adopting Bluetooth low energyto connect thedevices they develop. Richer beacons The third new feature Bluetooth 5 brings to
the table is extended advertising capability. First introduced in Bluetooth low energy, advertising lets low power sensor nodes signal “I have new data” to a central unit. If the central device is interested in that data, itinitiates a connection during which it exchanges data with the sensor node. Once the exchange is completed, the connection is closed and the sensor node goes back into low power mode. Short advertising messages were sufficient toenable this type of exchange. However, it didn’t take long for device manufacturers to figure out that this kind of “non-connected” advertising message can also be used as a beacon to broadcast information without first having to establish a connection. Apple developed their way of doing it in iBeacon, and Google countered with Eddystone. With the popularity of the beacon use case
came the desire to make it more powerful and broaden its scope. Bluetooth 5 takes the beacon use case to a new level by increasing advertising message length from 31 bytes previously to 512 bytes, even allowing for multiple 512 byte messages to be linked together. To avoid congestion, it extends these longer advertising packets to all 40 available channelsrather than limiting advertising to three advertising channels as in the previous specification. Extended advertising capability lets nodes send more data packets, even packet streams, without first having to establish a Bluetooth low energy connection. Even though Bluetooth low energy was designed for low power use cases, short data packets, and quick connection establishment, establishing a Bluetooth low energy connection always consumesextra power. In some use cases, broadcasting data connection-free can push
down total power consumption even further. Advertising messages play an essential role in Bluetooth mesh, in which they are used to broadcast data to other nodes. Bluetooth mesh Shortly after the release of the Bluetooth 5 specification, the Bluetooth SIG released the specification for Bluetooth mesh. Together,Bluetooth 5 and Bluetooth mesh lay the foundation for many new applications and use cases. They are particularly important for the Industrial Internet of Things as they enable use cases previously only possible with other technologies such ZigBee, SubGHz, etc. Because the key advantages are already supported by Bluetooth, the combination ofBluetooth 5 and Bluetooth mesh is expectedtoenable a host of new application areas and use cases. Bluetooth mesh is standardized by the Bluetooth SIG, which means thatdevices implementing it will be interoperable. Bluetooth mesh is designed around the following techniques: • a publish-subscribe model • managed flooding • friendship for low power nodes In a Bluetooth mesh network, network nodes are configured to operate in a publishsubscribe model. Information among nodes is transmitted in messages. Nodes providing data or actions use messages to publish information on the network. Other nodes can either collect the data in messages or use it for actions. Figure 2depicts a simple mesh network made up of switches and lights and shows how they are configured to operate. To spread a message across the mesh, the source node simply broadcasts its message using advertising. Other nodes in the network then receive and forward the messageto all other nodes, extending the range of the mesh network well beyond the capability of an individual Bluetoothlink. This is referred to as flooding mesh. There are several basic mechanismsin place to ensure that the network is notoverloaded. Examples include (i) not relaying messages thata node has already touched, and (ii) limiting the number of hops. For a network to support relaying, relaying
BISINFOTECH.COM 29
nodes need to actively listen to messages all the time. This means that theycannot operate in low power mode. Nodes with limited power can instead be configured in a friendship relationship withrelayingnodes. In a friendship relationship, the relaying node temporarily stores data until the low power node wakes up. Then the data is exchanged during the short period in which the low power node is active.

Industry 4.0 Industry 4.0, sometimes referred to as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), is an initiative that was launched by the German government in 2011. Since then, many other regions have created their own variants of the concept: In 2015, Japanese companies formed the Industrial Value Chain Initiative (IVI). In the US, the Industrial Internet Consortium was set up to encourage greater use of the Internet in the American manufacturing sector. In manufacturing, Industry 4.0 seeksto leveragetechnology to improve efficiency and reduce impact on natural resources. Examples of such enabling technologies include low power and low cost sensors, wireless connectivity, affordable network infrastructure, and computing power to analyze the large amount of collected data (Big Data). In predictive maintenance applications, for example, sensors are added to traditional electric motors.Sensor data is then analyzed toassess their operation (temperature, vibrations etc.) and predict when maintenance becomes necessary. The objective of predictive maintenance is toprevent unexpected failures that
30 BISINFOTECH.COM
would cause unplanned disruptions in the manufacturing process, but also to avoidunnecessary maintenance operations imposed by an overly conservative preventive maintenance schedule Bluetooth 5 in Industry 4.0 The enhancedfeatures provided by Bluetooth 5 pave the way for a number of new Industrial Internet of Things applications. Examples include: • device firmware upgrades • large industrial sensor networks, e.g. capillary networks • asset tracking • connected buildings • industrial real-timecontrol Let’s take a closer look at some of the aforementioned use cases. Device firmware upgrade The increased data rate provided by Bluetooth 5 – up to 1.4 Mbps –is sufficient to quickly send small files over the Bluetooth low energy connection. This makes it possible for industrial devices running embedded firmware, such as variable frequency drives,to use a Bluetooth low energy connection to transfer firmware filesforDevice Firmware Upgrade Over The Air (DFU-OTA). The latest generation of smartphonesthat support Bluetooth 5 may be used as mobile gateways between the internet and the industrial device. With a data rate of 1.4 Mbps, it only takesseven seconds to send a 1 MB firmware file, which is typical in many embedded industrial products. Device manufacturers might even consider replacing Wi Fi with Bluetooth low energy for this use case, bringing down both devicecost and power consumption.
Figure 4 Bluetooth low energy data rates support firmware upgrade over the air
Industrial IoT capillary sensor networks In the predictive maintenance use case, sensors need to be connected to a number of otherwise unconnected devices. There are two ways to do this: Sensors can either
connect directly to the cellular network, or they can connect to short range radio networks that, in turn, are connected to cellular gateways. The second approach is referred to as a capillary sensor network. Bluetooth 5 and Bluetooth mesh can be used to support capillary sensor networks by letting large numbers of sensors connect into a large network. Using Bluetooth as the short range radio has a multiple advantages over other short-range technologies. The main one is that Bluetooth is supported in almost all smartphones and tablets, making them the obvious tools for sensor and network configuration.
Figure 5 Capillary networks according to Ericsson
Asset tracking Mesh networks set up to control lighting in a building or factory, e.g., can be used to enable additional use cases such as asset tracking. This requires configuring Bluetooth mesh enabled asset tags to connect to the same mesh network, allowing nodes in the mesh sensor network to report which asset tags they detect back to devices monitoring the network. Information gathered from several nodes in the network can then be used to determine the approximate location of each asset. The accuracy provided is sufficient to know on what floor and in which room valuable assets are located. Examples of assets that could be monitored using this approach are expensive, moveable industrial equipment and specialized tools at manufacturing sites. Shaping Smarter Cities! Sensors: Key to Helping Vertical Farms Thrive
JosÊ Chavez is a senior pursing a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington, with particular interests in cybersecurity and augmented reality, among others.
Vertical farming has been on the rise these past few years thanks to technology advances that enable farmers to monitor and control environmental variables. The trend toward vertical farming is in response to several challenges found in traditional farming, including the extensive acreage and water needed, chemicals used in pest control, costs of transporting food to population centers, and crop loss due to extreme weather, among other things. Vertical farms have the potential to generate more produce than traditional farming in smaller spaces, using trays of crops stacked on top of each other. Vertical farming also reduces CO2 emissions by eliminating the need for vehicles to transport food over long distances, as the food grown by vertical farms would be supplied to local supermarkets
and neighboring cities. Additionally, the technologies used in vertical farming allow for tightly controlled conditions that minimize growth time, maximize harvest yields, and maximize overall process efficiency. Vertical farming is not typically done with soil-based systems. Instead, these alternative methods are used: yyHydroponics: Uses a solution of water mixed with nutrients that acts as soil for the plants to grow. yyAeroponics: Uses a medium such as cloth to grow plants by spraying the exposed roots with a mix of water and nutrients yyAquaponics: Uses a closed looped structure comprised of cultivating both fish and plants that support and benefit one another Vertical farms rely on sensor data to establish and maintain ideal growing conditions. Sensors such as moisture sensors, pH sensors, and temperature sensors provide hundreds, if not thousands, of data points that help farmers improve the quality of crops, grow larger quantities of crops, and use resources efficiently. Analog Devices combines moisture, pH, and temperature sensors into one development tool: The EVAL-CN0398-ARDZ Evaluation Board:
yyThe 3-wire soil moisture sensor determines soil moisture by measuring its dielectric constant, which enables precision in watering and eliminates waste yyThe pH sensor measure soil pH to determine which nutrients need to be added or adjusted to balance pH for optimal plant growth yyThe temperature sensor measures soil or solution temperature to maximize germination and growth The Evaluation Board is a low power device featuring an Arduino shield form factor for rapid prototyping to allow engineers to test the growing conditions of plants within a small sample size. The chip select is configurable to be routed to three general purpose I/O pins of the board, allowing multiple boards using SPI communications protocol to be stacked up.The all-in-one sensor combination makes is an easy and efficient sensor solution. Data Mining to Help Develop White LEDs is a Believable Discovery Data mining can show ground-breaking potential for producing future LEDs as Researchers used data mining and computational tools to discover a new phosphor material for white LEDs The application for data mining can be rationally defined in the connected world. From the virtual world plying to the physical world, data mining can show ground-breaking potential for producing future LEDs. University of California is making this mindboggling theory of data mining to a noted application. Phys.org has lately reported that a team led by engineers at the University of California San Diego has used data mining and computational tools to discover a new phosphor material for white LEDs that is inexpensive and easy to make. The Researchers have reportedly built prototype white LED light bulbs using the new phosphor. The prototypes exhibited better color quality than many commercial LEDs currently on the market. Phosphors, which are substances that emit light, are one of the key ingredients to make white LEDs. The phosphors used in many commercial white LEDs have several disadvantages. However, many are made of rare-earth elements, which are expensive, and some are difficult to manufacture. They also produce LEDs with poor color quality. Researchers at UC San Diego and Chonnam National University in Korea discovered and developed a new phosphor that avoids these issues. It is made mostly of earth-abundant elements; it can be made using industrial methods; and it produces LEDs that render colors more vividly and accurately. The new phosphor—made of the elements strontium, lithium, aluminum and oxygen (a combination dubbed "SLAO")—was discovered using a systematic, highthroughput computational approach developed in the lab of Shyue Ping Ong, a nano-engineering professor at the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering and lead principal investigator of the study. Ong's team used supercomputers to predict SLAO, which is the first known material made of the elements strontium, lithium, aluminum and oxygen. Calculations also predicted this
32 BISINFOTECH.COM
material would be stable and perform well as an LED phosphor. For example, it was predicted to absorb light in the near-UV and blue region and have high photoluminescence, which is the material's ability to emit light when excited by a higher energy light source. Researchers in the lab of Joanna McKittrick, a materials science professor at the Jacobs School of Engineering, then figured out the recipe needed to make the new phosphor. They also confirmed the phosphor's predicted light absorption and emission properties in the lab. A team led by materials science professor Won Bin Im at Chonnam National University in Korea optimized the phosphor recipe for industrial manufacturing and built white LED prototypes with the new phosphor. They evaluated the LEDs using the Color Rendering Index (CRI), a scale that rates from 0 to 100 how accurate colors appear under a light source. Many commercial LEDs have CRI values at around 80. LEDs made with the new phosphor yielded CRI values greater than 90. The computational quest for a new material Thanks to the computational approach developed by Ong's team, discovery of the phosphor took just three months—a short time frame compared to the years of trial-and-error experiments it typically takes to discover a new material. "Calculations are quick, scalable and cheap. Using computers, we can rapidly screen thousands of materials and predict candidates for new materials that have not yet been discovered," Ong said. Ong, who leads the Materials Virtual Lab and is a faculty member in the Sustainable Power and Energy Center at UC San Diego, uses a combination of high-throughput calculations and machine learning to discover next-generation materials for energy applications, including batteries, fuel cells and LEDs. The calculations were performed using the National Science Foundation's
Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment at the San Diego Supercomputer Center. In this study, Ong's team first compiled a list of the most frequently occurring elements in known phosphor materials. To the researchers' surprise, they found that there are no known materials containing a combination of strontium, lithium, aluminum and oxygen, which are four common phosphor elements. Using a data mining algorithm, they created new phosphor candidates containing these elements and performed a series of first-principles calculations to predict which would perform well as a phosphor. Out of 918 candidates, SLAO emerged as the leading material. It was predicted to be stable and exhibit excellent photoluminescence properties. "It's not only remarkable that we were able to predict a new phosphor compound, but one that's stable and can actually be synthesized in the lab," said Zhenbin Wang, a nanoengineering Ph.D. candidate in Ong's research group and co-first author of the study. The phosphor's main limitation is its less than ideal quantum efficiency—how efficiently it converts incoming light to light of a different color—of about 32 percent. However, researchers note that it retains more than 88 percent of its emission at typical LED operating temperatures. In commercial LEDs, there's usually a tradeoff with color quality, Ong noted. "But we want the best of both worlds. We have achieved excellent color quality. Now we are working on optimizing the material to improve quantum efficiency," Ong said.

Vehicle Electrification 4. Connectivity Today, our cars are empty and parked 90% of the time and with the increasing traffic congestion in cities, people are questioning the need to even own a vehicle of their own. Companies like Ford and Toyota who are looking in invest in car-sharing and mobility services platforms as potential business opportunities.
Another major trend in the automotive market is the electrification of vehicles. OEMs are aggressively pursuing electrification with Toyota, General Motors, Volvo and Ford making aggressive plans towards electrification. With India leapfrogging to BS VI and Government of India’s aggressive push to electrify all new vehicles by 2030, auto part manufacturers and carmakers are compelled to draw up early plans for electrification. The other 2 trends are Autonomous Driving and Connectivity. SAE has defined the various levels of Autonomous Driving all the way from no automation to driver assistance and full automation. Most of the systems used today are helping drivers avoid accidents but in just a few more years they may be eliminating the need for drivers at all.

There are various technologies that drive autonomous vehicles: • Sensors
Sensors are an integral part of autonomous vehicles.
• Communication and Connectivity
A “connected vehicle” as the name suggests should be connected with the world around it and should be able to communicate to other vehicles (V2V Communication), infrastructure like traffic lights (V2I Communication) and even with the GPS signals coming from the satellites. Combined with other wireless signals of a typical automotive V2X accelerates technology convergence, where test engineers integrate more I/Os and wireless standards. There are different standards competing today for V2X. IEEE 802.11p (DSRC) and LTE V2X (Cellular V2X) being the top-runners. • Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence
Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence needs to play an o Radar: Radars typically work by emitting an electromagnetic
pulse which gets reflected from objects and is received back by the receiver. Based on the time difference between the transmitted pulse and the reflection and parameters like Doppler shifts, the range and speed of objects is calculated. The Automotive Radar so far has been a tale of two frequencies- the 24GHz band and the 77GHz band.
important role to achieve fully autonomous vehicles. A lot of research is going on to develop deep learning algorithms including neural networks. This kind of inductive learning leads to evolving software operation that is challenging to test. Test Challenges & Methodologies
Autonomous vehicles pose several test challenges due to regulatory uncertainity, new technologies and their integration.
o Cameras: Radars are effective at detecting obstacles, whereas cameras on the other hand are good at detecting what those obstacles are. There are multiple cameras mounted on a vehicle to capture a 360-degree view of the surroundings. The Automotive Camera market is expected to grow to $5 billion by 2026 according to a report of Transparency Market Research. o LIDAR: LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) works on the same
principle as Radar with the only difference being that instead of using Radio waves, a LIDAR uses visible light for creating exact 3D monochromatic images or maps around the vehicle. Apart from the sensors mentioned above there are other sensors like ultrasonic proximity sensors, etc. that are extensively used.
National Instruments offers a flexible platform based on the open PXI standard that can be moulded to build test systems that can scale up as the test requirements change. This kind of a modular platform allows flexibility and scalability of these test systems. Let us take examples of some of these technologies and the test

strategies for them. • Radar: There are 2 different tests that are performed on a radar subsystem. o Radar Sensor Characterization
o Target Emulation or Radar Echo Simulator NI Vehicle Radar Test System (VRTS) provides automated radar measurement and obstacle simulation capabilities for 76-81 GHz vehicular radar systems. The VRTS’s flexible obstacle generation capability allows engineers to test the embedded software of radar and other ADAS systems through simulation of a wide range of generated scenarios. The system works on the 76-81GHz frequency range and can emulate obstacles upto a minimum range of 4m which a range resolution of 10 cm. In addition, the combination of high-performance mmWave Radio Heads and the PXI Vector Signal Transceiver (VST) also allows engineers to conduct precision RF measurements for beam characterization and testing. radar module that we could not detect before.” - Niels Koch, Audi You can find the complete application note here • Cameras Cameras help to detect details about the obstacle. Camera subsystems are testing in 2 specific ways: o Scene Replay in front of camera assembly. o Raw Video Frame Simulation with noise and error injection. Companies like Valeo use the NI platform to maximize test reuse for Vehicle Camera systems meant for Automated Parking. “Using the PXI platform, we get the flexibility we need, while still ensuring we can reuse all the common elements such as the DAQ functionality and HIL environment." -Derek O'Dea, Valeo. • Sensor Fusion Sensor fusion is a growing trend where multiple sensors are fused together and their signals are given collectively to the ECU to make better decisions. The systems required to test these need to generate precisely synchronized sensor signals which can be achieved using the timing and synchronization lines on the PXI bus. • Communication and Connectivity A typical vehicle contains various wireless standards like radio, navigation, broadcast, cellular communication and connectivity. NI’s RF measurement and test products include Vector Signal Generators, Analyzers and Transceivers to test these wireless standards. The Second-Generation Vector Signal Transceiver from NI (NI 5840) offers an instantaneous bandwidth of 1 GHz and works up to 6 GHz of RF frequency and can generate and analyze wideband RF signals. Companies like Harman have used NI platforms for test of wireless standards for infotainment units. "We tested multiple wireless technologies ranging from Bluetooth to WiFi to GPS and cellular all with the same equipment using the NI Wireless Test System which helped us significantly reduce test time and the time it took to get our test systems up and running." - Markus Krauss, HARMAN/Becker Automotive Systems GmbH Please find the full application note here: Conclusion: Autonomous vehicles are the future of the automotive industry and the industry is gearing up to move from partial automation or driver assistance systems to full automation. There is a lot of new technology in terms of advanced sensors, sensor fusion and machine learning that is fueling this trend. The test systems that test these technologies need to be flexible and scalable to accommodate new requirements and ensure that these systems are reliable before they enter the roads.
Major OEMs like Audi have been using the NI Radar Test Systems to test their radar subsystems. “With the PXI VST, the combination of wide bandwidth and lowlatency software allowed us to discover an automotive radar sensor like never before—even allowing us to identify critical bugs in our

Juniper Networks’ Expands Offering to Arm Enterprises with Multicloud-Ready Environment Juniper Networks rolls out expanded portfolio of offerings that will bring businesses closer to a secure and automated multicloud environment. Adding to its robust portfolio of data center, campus, branch and cloud networking solutions, Juniper Networks is seeking to provide the infrastructure solutions organizations need to become multicloudready. A recent study conducted by PwC and commissioned by Juniper Networks found that a majority of enterprise workloads currently on-premises are expected to migrate to the public cloud in the next one to three years. As a result, enterprises will need to adopt even greater multicloud strategies as workloads become more distributed across IT environments. Juniper’s extended offerings across its data center, campus, branch and cloud portfolio are designed to enable enterprises to migrate to a multicloud architecture on their terms, using natural refresh and expansion activities to meet today’s needs, while also ensuring they are multicloud-ready. “The promise of multicloud is to deliver an infrastructure that is secure, ubiquitous, reliable and fungible and where the migration of workloads will be a simple and intuitive process,” said Bikash Koley, chief technology officer at Juniper Networks. “For IT to be successful in becoming multicloud-ready, it is critical organizations consider not only the data center and public cloud, but also the on-ramps of their campus and branch networks. Otherwise, enterprises will face fractured security and operations as network boundaries prevent seamless, end-to-end visibility and control.” Juniper is introducing new data center solutions, including: • Universal switch for data center spine, data center edge and DCI: The new QFX10002-60C switch can be flexibly used as a spine or an edge device for data center interconnect (DCI). It features 60x100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) deep-buffer interfaces. Juniper is also adding the QFX5210-64C,
48 BISINFOTECH.COM
a 64x100GbE port spine switch, and the QFX5200-48Y, a 48x25GbE top-of-rack switch, to its portfolio. • Secure workload transitions with new line cards: The QFX MACsec line card addition to the QFX10000 modular switches provides 30-port 100GbE connectivity for encrypted traffic in and between data centers. Juniper is expanding its campus portfolio to include the following solutions: • Simplified campus management with a single point of control: Juniper SkyÔ Enterprise is a cloud management service that enables operators to deploy, configure and manage switching and security devices, reducing change errors by up to 90 percent. With an intuitive and easy-to-use web dashboard, managing campus and branch networks is made simpler. Sky Enterprise also gives network operators visibility into wireless access points using Aerohive Hive Manager NG API integration. • Multigig and compact core switches: The new EX2300 and EX4300 switches bring multigig interfaces to Juniper’s campus portfolio. The EX4300 multigig switch supports POE++ for new applications and MACsec to enable a secure on-ramp to the cloud. The EX9250 switch is a compact campus core that gives enterprises multiple fabric options by supporting both Junosâ Fusion and EVPN-VXLAN. Juniper’s extended branch portfolio prepares the branch for multicloud with the following offerings: New network services platform with wireless connectivity: Juniper’s new NFX150 Network Services Platform combines native branch security and hybrid WAN functionality with wireless 4G and LTE connectivity between branches. Built as an extensible platform, it can run third-party virtual network functions (VNFs). • Contrail SD-WAN with new subscriptionbased pricing: Juniper’s Contrail SD-WAN solution bundles the SRX Series Services Gateway and the NFX Series with the platform and orchestration software required for multicloud-ready SD-WAN. New subscription
pricing bundles provide several physical and virtual endpoint options with secure SD-WAN management. Juniper is offering a secure and automated way of establishing connectivity to and within public clouds. • Secure connectivity to public cloud: Juniper’s secure cloud connectivity solution combines onboarding services with virtual products (vSRX Virtual Firewall or vMX Virtual Router) available in AWS and Azure to automate the setup of secure IPsec connectivity between data center, campus and branch networks and virtual private clouds (VPCs). The solution gives enterprises operational choice with options that include CloudFormation, TerraForm or Ansible playbooks. All new offerings announced today are powered by the Juniper Networks Junosâ operating system, providing users the telemetry, secure programming interfaces and operational tools required to automate across multiple places in the network. “For multicloud to yield meaningful improvements in enterprise IT, the boundaries that have historically existed between the various places in the network have to come crumbling down. That requires endto-end security and automated operations across the data center, campus, branch and public cloud. We are bringing the full force of our engineering teams in a bid to simplify networking so that enterprises can migrate from legacy to multicloud-ready and eventually to full multicloud architectures,” noted Michael Bushong, vice president of enterprise and cloud at Juniper Networks.
Red Hat Fosters Kubernetes and Containers Expertise, Signs Acquisition Deal With CoreOS Red Hat has lately signed a definitive agreement to acquire CoreOS, Inc., an innovator and leader in Kubernetes and container-native solutions. The deal settled for the price of $250 million is subject to certain adjustments at closing that are not expected to be material. The strategic acquisition is sought to foster Red Hat’s vision of enabling customers to build any application and deploy them in any environment with the flexibility afforded by open source. By combining CoreOS’s complementary capabilities with Red Hat’s already broad Kubernetes and container-based portfolio, including Red Hat OpenShift, Red Hat aims to further accelerate adoption and development of the industry’s leading hybrid cloud platform for modern application workloads. As applications move to hybrid and multicloud environments, a growing number of organizations are using containers to more easily build, deploy and move applications to, from, and across clouds. IDC noted, “Substantial advances in cloud adoption, simplification, and portability are underway. The demand for cloud continues to grow, and enterprises now anticipate that cloud architecture will dominate their spending for the next several years. With the growing sophistication of containers, customers are looking to their application platform providers to help them use containers to transition and extend existing production applications to be useful in public or private cloud.” Founded in 2013, CoreOS was created with a goal of building and delivering infrastructure for organizations of all sizes that mirrored that of large-scale software companies, automatically updating and patching servers and helping to solve pain points like downtime, security and resilience. Is Blockchain Right For Your Business? Microsoft Azure Translates Union Budget 2018 speech through the potential usage of blockchain for Digital India When is the right time for your business to implement blockchain technology? Is it the right time to invest your capital in the technology and if yes, then will your current capacity or core capabilities be able to bear the overwhelming potential that blockchain has to offer? The Government of India, in its 2018 budget, has undertaken to explore the use of blockchain proactively for ushering in a digital economy. To aid the efforts of the Government, Microsoft has been working over the last many years with global giants to uncover the potential of blockchain across banking and finance, retail, cyber security, supply chain management, IoT, Insurance, cloud storage and many more. But what is blockchain exactly? And what capabilities make it so attractive for enterprises? Blockchain is a disruptive technology trend that enables a shared, authentic, decentralized ledger that is:
50 BISINFOTECH.COM
• S E C U R E : B l o c k c h a i n u s e s s t ro n g cryptography to create transactions that are impervious to fraud and establishes a shared truth. Also, all the transactions are signed with the digital certificate. • SHARED: The real benefits of blockchain, over conventional technology, are achieved when we use it to link organizations to share
information on a distributed ledger. • DISTRIBUTED: A blockchain can be distributed across multiple organizations and becomes more secure as replicas are added. • LEDGER: Every transaction is written into the ledger once and cannot be changed after the fact.
What kind of businesses is blockchain best for? First and foremost, blockchain technology is adept for businesses where large amounts of data is transferred, updated and filtered by multiple users. The potential scenario to apply blockchain depends largely on that. Once we realize that there is a situation that requires the capabilities of blockchain, there arises the need to understand whether a public blockchain is required or an enterprise blockchain is essential. But what is an enterprise blockchain? An enterprise blockchain (i.e. Hyperlegder, Ethereum Enterprise, Ripple, Quorum, etc.) is a distributed ledger with the following characteristics: • All the participants, and their digital identities, are known from one or many trusted organizations • Writes and read permissions are roles-based and usually requires consensus of several participants • Multiple algorithms are used for consensus There are two types of enterprise blockchain: • Private: Usually managed by a single
organization. Typically, the network participants are internal business units or divisions. • Consortium: In this case, the blockchain network is managed by multiple trusted organizations. New participants require a consensus of several participants. Which industries can use blockchain? The potential impact of blockchain is significant across all sectors and industries—from banking to government to healthcare and beyond, as it: • Eliminates intermediaries increasing efficiency and speed. • Simplifies operations by reducing cost and time related to reconciliations and disputes. • Potentially enables new business models increasing revenue and savings. According to top market analysts and leading consulting firms, the top five industries that blockchain will likely disrupt by 2020 are financial services, government, real estate, supply chain management, and media distribution. Currently, most Microsoft customers using blockchain on Azure are financial services institutions, including insurance companies. However, the trend is rapidly shifting to other industries.
More interestingly, a sizeable percentage of blockchain implementations involve at least one participant from a second industry such as manufacturing, government or retail. A few customer examples are: • Bank of America and Microsoft Treasury using Blockchain in a Trade Finance scenario to improve the process of issuing a Standby Letter of Credit to a customer (SBLC) to a customer. Impact: The process has been reduced from 3-5 weeks to just 3-5 days. • Renault Group is working together with Microsoft and VISEO to create the first digital
car maintenance book based on Blockchain and using Microsoft Azure capabilities. • Large food manufacturers and distributors are using blockchain to track their premium products journey from source to consumption efficiently, and to have a shared ledger as the single source of truth. In India, amongst other strategic partnerships and implementations, Microsoft has partnered with Primechain whereby Azure Blockchain is the exclusive cloud platform for BankChain, a blockchain consortium of 30 top banks. Primechain is creating innovative applications on top of Azure for near real-time cross-border
remittance at near zero cost, real-time peerto-peer transfer systems with automated reconciliation, end-to-end loan syndication process management, vendor onboarding, NDA processing, and vendor rating and many more. The State Bank of India, India’s largest bank is using Primechain’s blockchainenabled smart contracts and KYC. (https:// news.microsoft.com/en-in/microsoft-azureaccelerate-blockchain-adoption-bfsi-sectorindia-exclusive-cloud-partner-bankchain/) Both, in India and globally, Microsoft is the partner of choice for the financial services industry, be it for transforming into a modern workplace, collaborating securely in real-time with first line workers and field teams, reducing IT costs, improving CRM performance, or technologies like blockchain. Looking ahead, Microsoft is working with customers, partners, and the developer community to accelerate blockchain’s enterprise readiness. Microsoft’s mission is to help companies thrive in this new era of secure multi-party collaboration by delivering open, scalable platforms and services that any company can use to improve shared business processes. Its roadmap is based on the following principles: • Blockchain on your terms: No one-sizefits-all approach — Microsoft’s platform and ecosystem partners make it easy to get started and iterate quickly with the blockchain of your choice, both on-premises and in the cloud. • Integrated with your business: Merge blockchain with the IT assets you already have. Azure lets you integrate blockchain with the cloud services your organization uses to power shared processes. • Ready for the enterprise: With the Coco Framework, Cryptlets, and Azure services integrations, Microsoft is addressing existing technology gaps with blockchain and helps organizations build durable enterprise-grade applications. Microsoft also actively participates in industry consortiums such as R3, Enterprise Ethereum Alliance, and IC3, to understand core industry scenarios, and to continue learning to meet the needs of customers. Currently, Microsoft supports the most widely used blockchain and distributed ledger protocols on Azure, including HyperLedger Fabric, R3 Corda, Quorum, Chain Core, and BlockApps.

ROHM’s New Boost Converter Provides 1.3x Longer Battery Life ROHM has recently announced the development of a boost DC/DC converter with built-in MOSFET featuring the lowest current consumption in the industry, making it ideal for electronic devices powered by dry-cell batteries such as electronic dictionaries, remote controls for home appliances, and gadgets (i.e. toys, accessories).
In recent years, the number of portable devices such as smartphones and wearables that utilize rechargeable batteries (i.e. lithium ion) has risen dramatically. Meanwhile, the adoption of conventional dry-cell batteries resulting from application diversification and expansion into overseas markets for electronic dictionaries, remote controls for home appliances, and electronic gadgets is progressing at a rapid pace, increasing the demand for power supply ICs that can provide greater energy savings. In response, ROHM leveraged power
processes and analog circuit technologies cultivated over many years to develop power supply ICs that meet market needs, including this latest converter optimized for devices powered by dry-cell batteries. The BU33UV7NUX outputs the 3.3V necessary for driving MCUs in applications requiring 1-3V input from 1 to 2 dry-cell batteries. Pursuing lower current consumption to prolong operating time in battery-equipped devices allowed ROHM to achieve an industry-low current consumption of 7uA (vs functionally equivalent products), extending operating time by as much as 175 days over conventional products, from 540 days to 715 days (ROHM study, 50uA load current and assuming standby operation in conventional remote controls driven by 2 alkaline batteries). In addition, a load current mode switching function is built in that allows existing remote controls to support the latest highperformance systems equipped with LCD panels, providing greater energy savings in a wide range of sets. Key Features
1. Low current consumption and lowvoltage drive contribute to longer battery

Revolution Induced in Modern Inductors
Kaustav Banerjee, a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has taken a materials-based approach to reinventing this fundamental component of modern electronics. The findings appear in the journal Nature Electronics.
Classification of inductors in modern electronics is ubiquitous. With Internet of Everything (IoE) miniaturization and new compact design factors are all revolutionizing today’s electronics. Darwinism the fundamental component of modern electronics, a higher performing, smaller alternative to the inductor is to said have been developed using a materialbased approach. A team at UC Santa Barbara, led by Kaustav Banerjee, a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has taken a materials-based approach to reinventing this fundamental component of modern electronics. The findings appear in the journal Nature Electronics. Professor Kaustav Banerjee, leading the team at UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) in this project, explained that in typical metal conductors the kinetic inductance is so small it goes
unnoticed. "The theory of kinetic inductance has long been known in condensed-matter physics,” he said. “But nobody ever used it for inductors because in conventional metallic conductors, kinetic inductance is negligible.” Unlike magnetic inductance, kinetic inductance does not rely on the surface area of the inductor. Instead, it resists current fluctuations that alter the velocity of the electrons and according to Newton's law of inertia, the electrons resist such a change. Prof Banerjee explained that as the links between transistors and interconnects have advanced, the elements have become smaller, yet the inductor has remained an exception. "On-chip inductors based on magnetic inductance cannot be made smaller in the same way transistors or interconnects scale because you need a certain amount of surface area to get a certain magnetic flux or inductance value," lead author, Jiahao Kang, added. Historically, as the technology of transistors and interconnects that link them has
advanced, the elements have become smaller. But the inductor, which in its simplest form is a metallic coil wound around a core material, has been the exception. “On-chip inductors based on magnetic inductance cannot be made smaller in the same way transistors or interconnects scale, because you need a certain amount of surface area to get a certain magnetic flux or inductance value,” explained lead author Kang, who recently completed his Ph.D. under Banerjee’s supervision. The UCSB team designed a new kind of spiral inductor comprised of multiple layers of graphene. Single-layer graphene exhibits a linear electronic band structure and a correspondingly large momentum relaxation time (MRT) — a few picoseconds or higher compared to that of conventional metallic conductors (like copper used in traditional on-chip inductors), which ranges from 1/1000 to 1/100 of a picosecond. But single-layer graphene has too much resistance for application on an inductor.
