Q

Impact of Voice-Enabled Assistants on consumer behaviour? Since voice-enabled assistants were first introduced, millions of devices have been adopted by consumers. Whether you’re in your kitchen and need a recipe recited or driving and need directions, consumers are increasingly conversing with these connected devices to enhance their daily lives. The more comfortable consumers are with the technology, the more we’ve seen it impact shopping and workplace behaviors. Many devices are now being used to order products, restock inventory, and connect with brands like we’ve never seen before. Voice-enabled technology has already impacted consumer expectations of instant service and communication, and more brands are implementing

virtual assistants in the form of voice-enabled devices or chatbots to interact with their consumers.

Q

How will voice transform the workplace, specifically in IT departments? Voice-enabled devices have huge potential to become an integral part of the workplace. Employees currently spend much of their work days completing tasks that could be automated with the assistance of a voice-enabled device. More than 1/3 of IT professionals spend up to 2 hours per day on work that could be automated. Many IT workers spend their days addressing and sorting individual tickets, but with a voice-assistant, the device could enter the ticket for them

and transfer it to the correct team, freeing up their time for higher level tasks. The key is connecting these devices to business applications to help get work done.

While the reminders have been promoted as a way to assign household tasks to family members, it’s clear that an office who utilizes voice assistants could use this capability to possibly assign tasks to team members and ensure they are followed up on with reminders. By connecting workflows and management tasks through voice-enabled devices, workplaces can become more efficient and productive when assigning tasks.

employees can let these connected devices enter information, set tasks for other team members, and complete tasks. Voice can also be used to track inventory or

Any use cases, opportunities and concerns in Voice-Enabled Assistants? There are many use cases for voice, and I think assistants have great potential, not only for completing nuanced tasks, but for assigning tasks to coworkers, running meetings, and tracking productivity. In an IT department, with so many different technologies at play, voice can also be a way to connect systems and assign the correct teams to different issues that may arise in the company. For employees, one primary concern with voice-enabled assistants is likely privacy and data security, as it is with all rising tech. By making the terms of privacy completely transparent from the beginning, company executives can ensure the purpose of these devices is

clear to the workforce. Voice-enabled assistants are only meant to assist in employees’ daily lives, so it’s important to have employee buy-in before investing.

Q

How is AI transforming this nascent technology? AI will make the difference between using voice as a toy and using voice as a productive assistant. With machine learning capabilities, a voice-enabled assistant is not only able to intelligently respond, but signal a response to the system based on your query, such as sorting a ticket request or completing the task automatically. As we see continued improvements in AI, we’ll see a correlation in improved voice-enabled devices as well. Another example is predicting when a preventative action needs to be taken and the voice assistant can request direction based on the prediction and shift toward proactive assistance.

Q

What do you think is the future of voice-enabled technology? This technology will shift from simple task automation to more complex business processing tied to workflow. It will also evolve adding predictive shifts from reactive to proactive.

Q

Data security consistently polls as one of the top reasons where current non-owners have shied away from adopting connected devices. Will this impact voice-enable assistant technology? Much like challenges with early adoption of technology that could make some data available, many of those issues are overcome with technology, regulation, and oversight. Any impacts will be in the near term and we can expect this technology to be as ubiquitous as browsing the internet.

Q

Your expertise and knowledge-base into this technology? I’ve led an advanced analytics platform team, introduced AI into our products for service, built a prototype voice-based assistant, and presented to the market.

ISSUE 09|VOL 1|SEPTEMBER 2019|BISINFOTECH

Smart Card - Key Features

V.G. : Smartcards are typically credit-card sized (ISO7816 ID-1 form factor) card that provide ‘convenient and secured’ means for information storage and processing. It is a plastic card with printed layers and security IC chip on board. The chip on a smart card can be either a microcontroller or a memory chip. Smart cards are designed to be tamperresistant and use encryption to provide protection for inmemory information. Those cards with microcontroller chips can perform on-card processing functions and can read and write information in the chip's memory. Certified security chips allow storage of sensitive information in the card itself, so that these are not threatened by mass attacks against backend systems. The information stored on the microcontroller can vary depending on the system design. With increased internet connectivity more and more data will be stored on the cloud. As big data is transferred and stored remotely, it is extremely important to design the system securely. In addition to the simple data storage media, the chip will then act rather as a key to allow secured proceeding and access of data. L.A. : Smart cards are physical cards with built-in microprocessors that act as security tokens; these can either be contact type or contactless. Smart cards in the form of credit/debit or SIM cards are the most commonly used cards in the world. Typically, these cards are connected to a reader through direct physical contact or wireless connectivity standards such as radio frequency identification or near-field communication. In terms of advantages, smart cards are secure and provide a higher level of security. The data stored on smart cards can’t be easily altered or deleted. Similarly, compared to magnetic stripe cards smart cards are not easily affected by electronic interference and magnetic fields.

How It Works?

14

L.A.: Compared to contact smart cards, contactless smart cards have an invisible chip where data is stored. Its embedded antenna allows for the cards to read easily within close proximity to a reader and doesn’t require direct physical contact. These cards are used for applications like access control, payments etc.

BISINFOTECH|SEPTEMBER 2019|VOL 1|ISSUE 09

V.G: Contactless smart card works on the principle of RF communication between card and contactless reader. Both power supply and communication signals are derived from the RF field from the reader. As such, the communication can be done “through air” at short distance (typically 3-5cm gap). For example, in a transport application, commuter can just tap his contactless card on the gantry reader, to pay for the train ride. Thus providing a fast and convenience experience in the process.

Privacy & Security?

V.G. : Key functionalities of a secured IC on Smart cards, which acts as a so-called trust anchor, are: Data Authenticity 4 Consumer of the data has a means to verify the source and the data container; one use case here is verifying of user’s biometric data with template stored in smartcard secured IC. This enhances the security level and user convenience at the same time. Data Integrity 4 Check if data has not been modified since its origin 4 Unauthorized forgery of the data may cause many damages to the owners of the data and affect the trust to the system. The secured IC with corresponding cryptography like message digest and signature would give the data a secured stamp. Data Privacy 4 Holder has a way of verifying the receiver is authentic 4 Unintended listening / eavesdropping on an authentic conversation/skimming Non Repudiation 4 The validity of the data is protected from being repudiated or refuted by the data originator.

Interoperability and Standards

L.A. : Definitely, both interoperability and standards are crucial. While, interoperability enables the development of cards and applications that will work together in open environments. Standards are needed to ensure the industry at large is able to scale fast and seamlessly through standardized interface between cards, terminals and slots. V.G. : Yes, interoperability and standards, including the desired security level, provide a foundation for implementers and

adopters of smartcard technology. We have seen this trend in various projects implementation in India previously. For example, Rupay, which is used for local debit payment card scheme and SCOSTA which is the standard for e-Driving License. Here, based on open standards and specifications, the local industries has seen widespread and adoption for these application. Proprietary standards has its limitation, as it restricts open specification and multiple sourcing; in short, projects may be lock-in and tied to a closed system implementation which make scaling more difficult.

the preferred security partner. This is based on industry’s broadest security solution portfolio, in-depth system competence and high customer focus for 30 years.

V.G. : Key markets and application includes payment and banking, secured government documents, mobile communication (SIM), Transport and Ticketing and cards for physical and/or logical access (Employee Cards). These main stream applications covers more than 80% of the Smart Card market.

L.A. : HID Global powers the trusted identities of the world’s people, places and things and delivers a complete solution of secure smart card IDs and credentials in a variety of form factors for physical and logical access control as well as converged solutions for building and computer access, transit payment, cashless vending, biometrics and other applications. We provide the industry’s broadest range of smart card-based credentials such as cards, tags and keyfobs. As part of its portfolio, HID offers non technology IDs as well as single technology, multi technology, and contact chip-based smart cards.

L.A. : Typically, smart cards are used in market like Finance, Transport, Transit, Health, Education for applications relating to electronic payments, driving license, health cards, access control and so on.

This effectively decreases the time-to-respond by up to 90% while tripling the capacity of a SOC. Cyberbit’s ICS/SCADA Security, on the other hand, addresses the gradual convergence of IT, OT, and IoT networks. It eliminates end-to-end security risks associated with the networks of Industrial Control Systems (ICS) – such as electric grids, transportation systems, manufacturing lines, power plants,

etc. – where a cyberattack can put lives on potential danger and cause environmental damages. Lastly, a number of recent cyberattacks have indicated how easy it can be for evasive attacks to bypass firewalls and anti-malware systems. We have developed our EDR solution with Artificial Intelligence or to be more specific, its subset Machine Learning to detect attacks that can evade conventional systems. This approach is further refined using Behavioral Analytics to detect anomalies and hence, any potential threat.

Q

How is Cyberbit helping to bridge the cyber skill gaps? Cyberbit’s Cyber Range solution acts much like a flight simulator used for training pilots. It extends all real-life scenarios to cybersecurity professionals and prepares them to respond efficiently during an actual incident. It also acts as a test-bed for potential products, improves the utility of various tools, positively affects team play and communication, helps in brainstorming, and serves as a breeding ground for organizations to assess and onboard recruits. Using Cyber Range, we can dedicately focus on the shortcomings of the security team and efficiently eliminate them. It also helps in acquainting them the team with unconventional attack vectors as and when they emerge.

Q

Can you elaborate about the SCADAShield Mobile and what are its prime features? Industrial Control Systems (ICS) are the backbone of the global economy. ICS solutions control the operational technology (OT) networks that run largescale manufacturing facilities, critical infrastructure sites, and many more of the building blocks of modern society. Because of this diverse ecosystem, the legacy solutions that control large-scale OT networks are challenged to provide visibility into exact network structure. This ICS network security blind spot leaves OT networks highly-vulnerable to targeted attacks, malware, and other cyber threats. SCADAShield Mobile helps organizations overcome these challenges within minutes. For customers in need of rapidly assessing

Can you detail on the Cyberbit’s new SOC Automation and Orchestration? With an increasingly complex incident response environment, enterprises and MSSPs are seeking ways to scale their operations, shorten their mean time to respond, improve quality of services, handle the overwhelming volume of alerts, time-sensitive attacks, multivector IT-OT-IoT threats, and streamline incidence response capabilities. It helps in bringing the Mean Time to Respond (MTTR) by up to 90% through the optimization of NIST-defined incidentresponse lifecycle. Simultaneously, the user interface is enhanced and all tools are integrated into a single screen for seamless access and higher productivity. It helps in accelerating resolution with playbooks for various incidents such as phishing, ransomware attacks, DDoS attacks, or any user-defined playbook. The automated solution also prioritizes incidents as per their precedence and resolves them accordingly.

Secondly, using our Cyber Range product, we are trying to enhance the skill set of all current cybersecurity professionals while also familiarizing our college students, i.e. upcoming workforce, with real-life cybersecurity challenges. This approach will take us away from the bookish knowledge, which normally becomes redundant given the very dynamism of the cybersecurity industry. Our business model, as already explained, is a confluence of these approaches.

OUR VISION IS TO MAKE

Q

18

What are your strategies to expand in the Indian market and what is your business model for the indigenous market? Our primary strategy is to mitigate the biggest challenge that the Indian market is facing at present, i.e. the skill gap in cybersecurity segment. Subsequently, we envision to make India the global hub of end-to-end cybersecurity needs of global organizations. Here, we have to understand that India right now has the perfect ingredients to turn the tables globally. It is one of the largest markets, is rapidly digitizing, is as diverse and dynamic as it can get, and there is substantial room for novel approaches in the market. The nation is further home to the world’s second-largest population which is also the youngest. This positions India brilliantly amongst its competitor markets and the need of the hour is only to equip people with relevant skills. So, after India’s local cybersecurity challenges are addressed, it will unlock the avenues for the country and its market players to avail the global opportunity. This is the overarching objective that we have envisioned at Cyberbit. In order to achieve this objective, our approach is to make the military-grade cybersecurity a norm within the country.

INDIA A GLOBAL HUB FOR CYBERSECURITY TRAINING

Q

Govt. has extensive digitalization plans across the country, how does your company aim to align with them? Presently, we are seeing a paradigm shift in India with the boom of digitalization and the advent of smartphones is familiarizing everyone with digital tools and technologies including UPI, MyGov, DigiLocker, Aadhar Pay and so on. These initiatives focus on transforming India into a digitally empowered society and a knowledgeable economy. But this leaves India vulnerable to wide-ranging threats

that underlie with going digital. Cyberbit portfolio provides a complete product suite for detecting and mitigating attacks in the new, advanced threat landscape, and helps organizations address the related operational challenges. We are looking towork closely with government entities to strengthen their cybersecurity team by providing simulation-based training i.e. Cyber range. Our SCADAShield product has been securing the most sensitive infrastructures since 2010, with proven, battle-hardened technology that detects and mitigates cyber threats across the entire OT and IT stack—stopping known and unknown ‘‘zero-day’’ threats before they can cause physical harm. Hence, we are looking to work with publicly held oil and gas, airports, power generation firms, manufacturing firms and many more. Our EDRsupports 100% Air-Gapped networks by focusing on behaviour-based analytics and allows sensitive organizations –such aspublic financial institutions, government agencies to keep their infrastructure isolated and protected from the open internet-based threats.

Q

‘Education and Awareness’ still haunts Indian cybersecurity market, what are your comments to it and how is your company helping to foster the term, ‘cybersecurity’ in the country? As already indicated, our vision is to make India a global hub for cybersecurity training. This can only ha p p en if w e b ring pos i ti ve reforms across all aspects that affect the industry. Both education and cybersecurity awareness are integral in this context. In terms of cybersecurity awareness, we believe that the entire industry is working collectively to apprise organizations and individuals about the consequences that such a cybersecurity exploit can have on an organization. Organizations are also becoming more attentive to cybersecurity challenges as large-scale cyberattacks are surfacing across the horizontal market. In terms of education, state-of-the-art solutions like Cyber Range are bringing positive change on the ground. They are also being deployed by forward-looking educational institutes given the value it adds for their students and to their subsequent career.

IOT FEATURE

The world of technology is changing faster than ever these days, and the pace of new technology introduction to wireless applications has not subsided. As transmission standards have changed to accommodate Internet of Things (IoT) devices, it’s never been easier for a wireless enthusiast to try their hand at designing a new modulation scheme, and there are plenty of new sensors available to pair with a wireless link. These technologies are also more accessible to everyone than ever before. Let’s talk about each of these developments and how we can get our hands on this inexpensive and pervasive technology right now. Low power wide area network (LPWAN) radio technologies are available on cellular infrastructures and have been around for a few years now. Narrow band Internet of Things (NBIoT), Long Term Evolution Machine Type Connection (LTE-M and LTE-MTC), and enhanced Machine Type Communication (eMTC) are popular. The advantage of these technologies is their leverage of existing cellular towers that are used for voice and high bandwidth traffic. However, a device that needs only occasional reporting and control does not require a high bandwidth, and since many are battery-operated, there was a need for lower power and lower bandwidth standards that these technology standards enable. Other technologies that do not leverage existing cellular networks and must have infrastructures built a new include Sigfox, LoRa/ LoRaWAN and NB-Fi to name only a few. The disadvantage to these is requiring an uplink to couple to the broader internet. While network operators provide this uplink as a service, it is yet another computer network system to negotiate. However, the cellular network operators are huge companies and it’s not realistic to compete effectively with them. The best course is to buy “time” on their networks by adopting modems that comply to their standards and then pay a monthly use plan. The non-cellular networks can be built out with modest funds and with the limitation that the geography they cover is not great. They are certainly not worldwide until they are connected to a server that performs the bridging to the internet. The good news is that access to cellular networks, and the chips and modules to build your own low power network, are

available from Digi-Key Electronics. Digi-Key sells cellular network data plans, too, that cost as little as $3.00 per month for 300KB of data and international service (see figure 1). All you need is a cellular operator-certified modem and your device can be “online” worldwide. The modems and the chips that are included in those modems are also available.

Figure 1. Examples of Digi-Key cellular data plans.

Electronic solutions in the form of modules continue their dramatic growth. Instead of requiring the expertise yourself to design at the chip level, you can obtain a radio prebuilt and certified. This not only reduces necessary RF technical acumen, it also gets products to market more quickly. I did a spot check recently after looking up the chips used in modules and then looked to see what type of customer was buying each. It was surprising to see that companies having the necessary acumen were not only buying the same chips that were on the modules, they were also buying the modules, and both were being purchased in quantities of thousands of units. This supports the notion that it can be better to get to market early with a less cost-optimized product to test the market for a new product. If the market is large enough, the product can then be cost-optimized by going all the way down to the chip-level. But there is even a level lower than chips that I am callingthe waveform level. Software Defined Radios (SDRs) allow a developer to experiment with entirely new modulation schemes. If you have a unique need and the expertise, you can develop your own radio standard. Even if you don’t have the expertise, experimenting with an SDR can teach you a lot. One such SDR is the Analog Devices Advanced Learning Module PLUTO (ADALM-PLUTO) from Analog Devices and available for off-the-shelf shipping from Digi-Key (see figure 2). These units cost less than $150 USD as of August 2019. They interface to a personal computer over a USB link, contain an FPGA that is easily reconfigured, have extensive support for the programming language Python, and can transmit and receive signals over a range from 325MHz to 3.8GHz. If you really want to know and use RF, you can start at this level.

board, configure it in the IDE, and download your configuration including IDE-generated open-source code onto your board. That board can communicate with a device that is either tethered to a host via wires or wirelessly tethered via Bluetooth or WiFi and can then send whatever data it has to the internet for reception by a paired smartphone. Options exist to scale this to larger settings which do require a nominal fee. Trade-Off For

Semiconductor

Industry? 24

The semiconductor sector is already seeing a slowdown in the midst of challenges such as inventory issues, slowing demand for smart devices and falling memory chip prices. Now, the tensions between the U.S. and China threaten to worsen the situation. The market "will bottom out in the second half of 2019, but considering manufacturers have become cautious about investment due to U.S.-China trade frictions, the pace of recovery will likely be slow," said Akira Minamikawa, a principal analyst at IHS Markit. The U.S. in May essentially banned exports to Huawei Technologies, prompting some chipmakers to suspend transactions with the Chinese telecommunications equipment producer. Stepped-up American tariffs on goods from China are another negative, and a further slowdown in the Chinese economy would have repercussions for trading partners. The semiconductor market is anticipated to grow over the medium term as 5G wireless technology and next-generation automobiles take root. But for now, industry players will continue to assess the timing of the market bottoming out. Demand has plunged for memory chips used in data centers, smartphones and elsewhere. Memory sales, which account for roughly 30% of the semiconductor market, are seen tumbling 30.6% to $109.5 billion in 2019.Memory prices continue to languish, even as chipmakers move to cut production or postpone capital spending. Large-lot prices of standard DRAMs are almost 30% lower than in October, and prices of NAND flash memory have fallen about 30% in half a year.

SEMICONDUCTOR REPORT

From 2020, the industry is again poised for strong growth as artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly adding to global demand. With technological innovation happening at a breakneck speed worldwide, the semiconductor industry is also no exception to this, and it can look forward to significant growth in the coming years following a rather weak 2019.In 2018, global semiconductor sales stood at a total of US$ 481 billion, and over the coming four years, sales are expected to keep growing (albeit at a slower rate) to cross US$572 billion by the end of 2022. Samsung, a leading player in the global semiconductor industry, has recently undertaken a massive capital spending on its semiconductor division and this is expected to drive overcapacity in the memory segment, likely causing a fall in sales of memory products in 2019. Nevertheless, 2020 will witness a recovery of the sector once again. The global semiconductor industry is expected to be massively driven by the demand for chips that are related to the booming artificial intelligence sector. Much of this demand is likely to emerge from the industrial and automotive markets, with the automotive market expected to grow the fastest through 2022.

Key Drivers

How is The Global Market Performing?

The global semiconductor market is expected to post a CAGR of close to 9% during the period 2019-2023, according to the latest market research report by Technavio. A key factor driving the growth of the global semiconductor market is the rising adoption of semiconductors ICs in automobiles. The integration of semiconductors is being viewed as a key component for technological advancements by automotive manufacturers. In addition, several other developments in the automotive sector including the autonomous vehicles, wireless charging, EVs, and computer-based testing will drive the need for semiconductor components. Therefore, the increasing integration of advanced systems such as collision warning system, smart cameras, and autonomous braking system, will boost the demand for semiconductor ICs during the forecast period. The demand for advanced level packaging that helps to reduce node size and supports large volume production has compelled the

development of various packaging technologies. In addition, the emergence of 3D ICs has also increased the investments in packaging technologies. Several semiconductor packaging technologies are increasingly being developed and used by IDMs and OSATs to allow semiconductor manufacturers to improve the scale of production. Thus, the emergence of advanced packaging technologies will complement the growing quality and production scale requirements of semiconductor manufacturers during the forecast period. “There has been an increasing adoption of wafer-level packaging (WLP) and wafer-level chip-scale packaging (WLCSP). Finer patch pad, nanoscale patterning, FinFET fabrication, SIP fabrication, and SOP fabrication are some of the key advantages associated with the advanced packaging technologies. Thus, the dominance of these technologies as opposed to the existing technologies is expected to increase during the forecast period,” says a senior research analyst at Technavio.

India,The Next Semicondcutor Hub For Asia?

26

Asia is one of the largest contributors to the global electronics industry with its expertise in semiconductor fabrication. Experts say that India is spending more money on import of semiconductor than on oil. But India has never entered into this scenario even though it is one of the world's largest consumer of electronic goods. Hence the assessment of the reasons behind the lack of India's presence in the global electronics economy is quintessential at this point in order to build a future prospect of the country in electronics. As the Silicon Valley became the start-up hub for the US, India is building its own start-up cities such as Bangalore which houses some of the prominent start-up companies such as Mymo Wireless and Tejas Networks. The government initiatives to nurture the start-up ecosystems are also highlighted in this report. “Telecom, Healthcare, and Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) are Key Electronic Clusters Attracting the Indian Startup Ecosystem” Changing from embedded software and IP development, to developing derivative SOCs and now to full-blown complex SOC

IC development. Given the complexity of Fin FET based SOCs, the large staffing needs continue to cut across international boundaries. India continues to focus on its current strengths in IC design and development, embedded software, and supporting MNCs. Analog will continue to be a growth area in semiconductors, to power these SOCs. US, Japan, Korea, China, Singapore, etc are all large producers of semiconductor chips and also have a strong foothold on the global economy. applications, such as data centers and analytics. The greater, leading-edge devices are used at data centers. There are smart homes, connected cars, and wearables, as well as MEMS/sensors, MCUs/MPUs, smarter devices and PMICs, integration and SoCs, and advanced packaging. Eye at China From India China is building a homegrown chip program for the adoption of local semiconductors in 70% of its products by 2025.

IoT Impact

oT is going to be everywhere. According to research from Gartner, total spending on IoT technology will reach a billion dollar market. This was driven by service-based spending in the professional sector, which means businesses were contracting with outside firms to design and deploy the infrastructure required to support new connected machines and devices. The same research says that, worldwide, we can expect to see more than 26 billion connected devices come online between now and 2020.IDC predicting 32 billion and Cisco predicting 50 billion connected devices by 2020. The varied forecast for the number of connected devices and the market size for IoT evidently shows that there is a lack of clarity on the market opportunity. For consumers, IoT devices provide a degree of convenience, comfort and energy-efficiency that wasn’t possible before. All of this is true of the IIoT, too, with the addition of cost savings thanks to improved product throughput, insights into resource usage, better production forecasting and planning tools, better route optimization for deliveries and much more.Semiconductors power all of this. Each connected IoT or IIoT device contains sophisticated microchip designs that allow even low-energy devices to achieve remote connectivity. And because the IoT is so clearly poised for growth, it means the semiconductor

industry is, too. But that growth isn’t going to look like what we’ve seen so far.

New Models and Standardization

Standards war is not new to the technology industry (CDMA vs. TDMA, WiFi vs. WiMAX, HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray). However, in IoT the standards battles are unfolding on multiple fronts – connectivity, network, and applications. Semiconductor companies will have an important role to play on all three fronts. Technological innovations, growing demand, and evolving ecosystem will drive IoT maturity. Semiconductor companies are well positioned to help the IOT gain momentum, despite the obstacles ahead, provided that they embrace innovation and rethink their traditional business model. In the long term, IoT-driven yield models, linked with statistical process control methods, ensure process improvements as process engineers can quantify their own process sector’s influence on test yields instead of waiting for months to get the final test results.

Q

What are the impact and effect of IoT in the consumer electronics market? The IoT is making a tremendous impact across both consumer and industrial electronic markets. For consumers, in particular, the IoT is rapidly transforming their experience within their own homes. The smart home has moved from being a consumer gadget business to a comprehensive ecosystem of consumer solutions. The recent growth in smart speakers, or voice interfaces, in the home is also driving new growth in the smart home market. It is no longer enough to merely turn on a light via a remote control; consumers expect their connected lights to turn on or off based on other triggers. For example, when a family sits down to watch a movie together, a touch of a button or voice command might close the living room drapes, turn down lighting and switch on the TV to create a “movie night” scene.

and expectations of the many smart devices on today’s market, much of the functional intelligence is not actually resident on the devices. In a typical smart home device, the sensors observe the variables, such as motion, light and moisture, report them to a gateway device and wait for further commands. Commonly, the gateway connects to a remote cloud environment, which analyzes status and issues relevant instructions. While this architecture has proven its commercial viability in the marketplace, it lacks the immediacy and flexibility necessary for context-aware applications. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are emerging technology areas that will allow even more sophisticated data analysis and compression to be handled at the edge before transmitting data to the cloud, reducing latency and increasing privacy and security in these context-aware end nodes. How commendable in respect to consumer electronics is IoT serving as a vital source of revenue? The IoT market is poised to exceed 70 billion connected devices by 2025, creating massive opportunities for numerous companies across the global electronic supply chain. Silicon Labs recognized this opportunity more than eight years ago when CEO Tyson Tuttle set the company on a trajectory to become a groundbreaking innovator in the IoT. The revenue opportunity, combined with the potential

Challenges and scopes in this segment as IoT evolve stronger in the coming years? One of the largest challenges facing the IoT market is security, and Silicon Labs has been working for years to get ahead of this challenge. Security has without a doubt been overlooked as consumer device makers aren’t in the security business. Silicon Labs believes security must be built into the development process – it cannot be an end or bolt-on feature. Securing the IoT requires constant vigilance and ongoing development efforts across all layers of the IoT ecosystem. This even means chips and software embedded in today’s smart bulbs need to be designed with security in mind. We believe it’s up to chipmakers to educate device makers on the importance of implementing embedded security into their IoT applications to help protect end users against threats. Silicon Lab’s Z-Wave S2 smart home security technology has been developed as the gold standard for smart home using Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hillman cryptography and a-symmetric key exchange. Silicon Labs’ Z-Wave S2 Security requires only a small code footprint in embedded devices leaving plenty of headroom for device features and functionality. The S2 complements similar optimized mechanisms for IP domains that allow Z-Wave services to operate securely in an end-to-end fashion. We are advancing the robustness of this security solution and encouraging the other standards bodies to follow suit. Silicon Labs’ next-generation Wireless Gecko Series 2 SoCs also offer bestin-class security features that enable developers to implement robust security in IoT products. A dedicated secure core delivers faster, more energy efficient crypto with differential power analysis countermeasures and NIST-grade random number generator. Secure Boot with Root of Trust and Secure Loader prevents malware injection and ensures authentic firmware execution. Secure Debug with lock/unlock allows authenticated access for enhanced failure analysis.

Microchip Delivers Analog Embedded SuperFlash Technology Microchip Technology, via its Silicon Storage Technology (SST) subsidiary, reducing power with its analog memory technology, the memBrain neuromorphic memory solution. Based on its industry proven SuperFlash technology and optimized to perform vector matrix multiplication (VMM) for neural networks, Microchip’s analog flash memory solution improves system architecture implementation of VMM through an analog in-memory compute approach, enhancing AI inference at the edge. As current neural net models may require 50M or more synapses (weights) for processing, it becomes challenging to have enough bandwidth for an offchip DRAM, creating a bottleneck for neural net computing and an increase in overall compute power. In contrast, the memBrain solution stores synaptic weights in the on-chip floating gate—offering significant improvements in system latency. When compared to traditional digital DSP and SRAM/DRAM based approaches, it delivers 10 to 20 times lower power and significantly reduced overall BOM. “As technology providers for the automotive, industrial and consumer markets continue to implement VMM for neural networks, our architecture helps these forward-facing solutions realize power, cost and latency benefits,” said Mark Reiten, vice president of the license division at SST. “Microchip will continue to deliver highly reliable and versatile SuperFlash memory solutions for AI applications.” The memBrain solution is being adopted by today’s companies looking to advance machine learning capacities in edge devices. Due to its ability to significantly reduce power, this analog in-memory compute solution is ideal for any AI application. “Microchip’s memBrain solution enables ultra-low-power

in-memory computation for our forthcoming analog neural network processors,” said Kurt Busch, CEO of Syntiant Corp. “Our partnership with Microchip continues to offer Syntiant many critical advantages as we support pervasive machine learning for always-on applications in voice, image and other sensor modalities in edge devices.” SST will showcase this analog memory solution and present Microchip’s memBrain product tile array-based architecture at the AI/ML session track on flash performance scaling at the 2019 Flash Memory Summit from August 6-8, 2019, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, California. Development Tools SST offers design services for both its memBrain solution and SuperFlash technology, along with a software toolkit for neural network model analysis.

Implementing Serverless Microservices Architecture on AWS Aarti Parikh

About Author: Aarti is AWS Certified Solution Architect, AWS Certified Developer, and AWS Business & Technical Professional. She is associated with VOLANSYS Technologies as a Cloud Engineer. She has good hands-on experience on Serverless systems, Designing, developing and maintaining cloud Infrastructure for public clouds and architecting cloud solutions for enterprise applications.

Microservice is an architectural approach for softwares that are designed to speed up development cycles and support scalability. In this approach, software is composed of small independent services that communicates over well-architected APIs. In this article we will explain how enterprises can implement Serverless Microservices architecture using AWS Cloud.

Monolithic vs Microservices Architecture

In monolithic architecture, all the components are tightly coupled and run as a single service. Here, the entire architecture has to be scaled if any one component of the application experiences a spike in demand. This architecture type increases the difficulty level to implement new ideas in the application.

In Microservices architecture, each component is a small application that has its own hexagonal architecture. It is an architectural style that structures an application as a collection of services that are loosely coupled and independently deployable.

Features of Microservices Architecture Independent n In Microservices architecture, each component can be changed, upgraded or replaced individually without affecting the functionality of other components. Decentralized nM icroservices architecture follows the decentralized data management, where each service has its own view on data models. Autonomous n In Microservices architecture, there is no need to share any of the component code or implementation with other components. Any communication between components can be done via well-defined APIs.

MICROSERVICES ARCHITECTURE

Microservices architecture is complex and requires to release code dependencies going down to the database layer. Testing n In a Microservices environment, testing is complex due to different services and their integrations. Monitoring n In Microservices architecture application is broken down into small components. It is difficult to find the root cause of the problem when something goes wrong because issue may not lie within the component that fails, but a dependency.

ServerlessMicroservices Architecture

The diagram below shows the ServerlessMicroservices architecture where the complete solution is built without managing any server. This also eliminates the operational efforts of running and monitoring the servers. Lambda will handle everything required to run and scale the execution to meet actual demand with high availability. Lambda supports several programming languages and it can be called directly from any web or mobile applications.

Black Box n Microservices architecture behaves like a black box because each component hide the details of complexity from other components.

Advantages of Microservices Architecture

Quality n Microservices architecture can also improve the quality of code as the whole application is running into small and well-defined components Scalability n In Microservices architecture, each component is properly decoupled so it can be scaled horizontally and independently from each other and it never faces the downtime during the scaling process because in horizontal scaling more components are added to the existing pool instead of increasing the capacity of each component Easy Development n Microservices architecture makes it easy to try out new ideas and roll it back with the help of continuous integration and continuous delivery,if something undesired happens. Resilience n With Microservices architecture, applications can handle total service failure by degrading the functionality instead of crashing the entire application.

Challenges of MicroservicesArchitecture

Migration n The Process of migration from a Monolithic architecture to

Fig 2.ServerlessMicroservices Architecture

In the architecture diagram, Lambda is integrated with API Gateway. Synchronous calls from API gateway to AWS Lambda enables the application to operate as serverless. AWS Lambda will store all the data in a fully managed NoSQL database called DynamoDB and all the static data will be stored in S3 Bucket. It can be said that Microservices architecture is designed to overcome the challenges of traditional monolithic architectures seen in enterprise applications. It allows collaboration between operations and development teams of any organizationleading to DevOpsand is a preferred choice nowadays. AWS offers multiple managed services that can help engineers build Microservices architectures and minimize architectural and operational complexity.

Future of Broadcast and Multimedia Analyzers IAN VALENTINE

Video Products and Strategy Director at Tektronix Video, which is now part of Telestream.

42

Before considering broadcast and multimedia analyzers specifically, we need to take a step back and consider what is happening in the content creation and content delivery arenas as providers strive to deliver a great experience to consumers, on the consumers terms, on a variety of end devices. Choice, an increasingly difficult battle to win and retain viewers, and an accelerating rate of deployment of new technologies is creating new challenges for broadcast and multimedia providers. As a

BISINFOTECH|SEPTEMBER 2019|VOL 1|ISSUE 09

consequence, Test and Measurement solutions need to evolve to address and solve new problems to ensure a great and consistent experience for customers can be created and delivered as efficiently as possible. On the content creation end of the process there is a continuous drive to originate content (live or episodic) in the highest resolution possible. This translates to 4K (or UHD) resolutions, the use of wide color gamuts (WCG), and

high dynamic range (HDR) technology. These technologies combine to create increasingly realistic images on the latest displays being used by consumers. However, for content creators these technologies have brought with them a series of new problems. For example, how do you ensure that the content being created will look good on HDR and SDR displays, that skin tones and colors are acceptable regardless of the display used, and that the HDR highlights do not exceed the capabilities of the

T&M

screen or are so bright and cover large areas of the screen leading to a very uncomfortable viewing experience? These challenges are driving changes in the production workflow and the need for a new range of tools to help creators get this right. Traditionally waveform monitors are the instrument of choice for this task, but waveform monitors themselves need to evolve and provide new tools and analysis capabilities to address these challenges. The standard tools used on these instruments in production include a waveform display to ensure that luminance levels are within specification, a vector display to check chroma levels and skin tones and a picture display to provide a representation of the final product. However the use of WCG and HDR make these tools difficult use in production and post production – traditional waveform displays dealing with HDR will crop highlights and crush black levels, using vector displays to measure WCG such as BT 2020 is difficult as the display shrinks to deal with the wider color space and the traditional picture display will appear washed out when fed HDR content. This means that new displays that support a new workflow are required – waveform displays that work in light levels (Nits) not mV or percentages so that there is a direct correlation to the HDR image and camera aperture settings, a CIE chart to display and measure colors in multiple color spaces and a false color picture image that can be used to display HDR highlights, what area of the image is at HDR levels and where those highlights are. The problem is exacerbated by the use of multiple HDR standards (e.g. HDR10, Dolby Vision, Hybrid Log Gamma) and camera gamma curves (e.g. Slog 3, Log C) and so the modern waveform monitor needs to be able to handle all of these quickly and efficiently. Having created the content it needs to be delivered to the consumer. The biggest and most disruptive trend here is the use of Adaptive Bit Rate (ABR) or streaming technologies to deliver the content to a wide variety of display types (phones, tablets, high resolution televisions) with different capabilities. Unlike traditional broadcast or linear cable systems where content is pushed from the broadcaster,

streaming moves to a pull model where content is pulled at an individual level to individual devices and so the need for IT like environment scaling is essential. Any monitor or analyzer in this environment needs to be able to scale in a similar way. It is also worth mentioning that increasingly these solutions are being deployed as virtual or cloud solutions (both on premise and public cloud) and so efficient mechanisms for deploying monitoring solutions in this environment is essential and needs to be easy to setup, configure and control. ABR is used to deal with the variations in the available bandwidth to which these displays may be connected to. ABR itself relies on the content being chunked into (usually) 2 second segments and multiple profiles of different bit rates so that a continuous and acceptable viewing experience can be achieved without the end device stuttering or freezing as the available bandwidth varies. Where all these segments and profiles are stored on the network is defined in a manifest file that is used to select and send the correct profile to the end device. This means that ABR monitors or analyzers need to be able to check the manifest file structure and actually check that the specified content is where it is defined to be. If the content is there the analyzer need to ensure that the bit rate is correct for that profile and should also check that the actual quality of the content is acceptable. This can be difficult to do in most streaming systems as the packager used to chunk the content will also encrypt it for protection purposes. This means that modern ABR analyzers need to be able to handle a variety of Encryption and DRM systems to be able to provide quality of experience measurements. To avoid stuttering and jumps it is essential that all of the chunks in the various profiles are accurately aligned so that there is a smooth transition between profiles as the display device moves between profiles. Today’s analyzer not only needs to check that the various profiles are available, but also need to ensure that all of the chunks are accurately aligned. Advertising remains the major method for monetizing content and todays

technologies allow advertisers to provided targeted adverts that are more relevant to individual viewers. These adverts are dynamically inserted from a number of sources on the network. It is vital that these adverts are sourced from the right place and inserted into the content at the right time and place. This means that ABR analyzers need to ensure that like SCTE35 markers are inserted at the right point in the content (to mark insertion points for adverts) and that those adverts actually get inserted into the content. Beyond this, these monitors are also required to ensure that delivered content meets the regulatory requirements (loudness measurements and the Closed Captioning) and provide a whole range of quality measurements (MOS scores, frozen frames, audio mutes etc.) for the delivered content and for most operators this needs to be done as a background task so that they are only informed when there are issues i.e. monitoring by exception. It is worth mentioning that the link between content creation and content delivery is often a file based environment where content is stored until required for playout. Here file based analyzers can be used to perform in depth analysis of the content stored to ensure that any transcoding or audio/video processing has not negatively impacted the content, that is will play correctly when delivered and meets required delivery specifications for example the Netflix and DPP delivery specifications. File based solutions can also provide vital MOS measurements, check alignment, HDR levels and metadata along with a wide range of syntactic and semantic tests of the content.

Key products are: PRISM – Media monitoring and analysis Aurora – File Based Analysis Vidchecker – File Based Analysis Surveyor ABR – ABR Monitor OptiQ Monitor – Channel and Monitoring cloud framework.

SECURITY UPDATES

Attackers Outpacing Ability to Defend Organizations 84 percent of CISOs believe the risks of cyber attacks will increase and almost a quarter believe the capabilities of attackers are outpacing their ability to defend their organization. This issue is compounded with limited resources, including lack of sufficient budget and skilled professionals as well as a threat attack surface that is quickly expanding and becoming more sophisticated. Because of this, security leaders understand it is critical to have the right strategies in place as they face an arms race between the capabilities of attackers and their own defense postures. Fortinet announced it in a new report by Forbes Insights it commissioned titled “Making Tough Choices: How CISOs Manage Escalating Threats and Limited Resources.” The global survey polled CISOs across various industries about the biggest challenges they’re facing and strategies they’re putting in place to address these obstacles. “The Forbes Insights survey echoes the primary challenges we hear directly from Fortinet customers and prospects. Today’s CISOs are tasked with the challenge of allocating limited funds and resources to the highest-return cybersecurity projects which can range from breach detection to response. These C-level security leaders must maximize security with finite resources, all while balancing strategic leadership responsibilities and tactical issues. Through

the Fortinet Security Fabric, Fortinet is providing end-to-end security so that CISOs can navigate a rapidly changing cyber threat landscape day in and day out,” said Rajesh Maurya, Regional Vice President, India & SAARC at Fortinet. Other key takeaways from the Forbes Insights report include: CISOs are increasingly implementing AI technologies to cybersecurity. Forty-eight percent of security leaders are focused on seamlessly integrating security into their network operations and 45 percent are shifting and changing their cybersecurity strategy toward advanced analytics for greater visibility into their environments. AI, like machine learning, and analytics relieves IT teams time away from monotonous tasks, so they can focus on business-critical tasks such as identifying anomalous behavior in their networks and responding to threats quickly. CISOs would like to allocate more of their budget to detection and response. According to the survey, security leaders are currently allocating an average of

36 percent of their security budget on response. However, in an ideal world, they would shift their resources from prevention to bolster detection and response. The survey found they’d increase response to be 40 percent of their budget. Cybersecurity training and education for employees is key. The Forbes Insights survey found that CISOs believe talent and training constraints have a significant impact on their organizations. As a result, CISOs are paying more attention to educating their own employees on best practices and building cybersecurity awareness in order to prevent and reduce internal threats. CISO are constrained by the lack of an adequate budget. While threats are expanding, CISOs find that their resources, including budget, remain limited. A third of CISOs surveyed in the report felt that the lack of an adequate budget is having a significant impact on their cybersecurity program. A top priority for CISOs is safeguarding customer data and intellectual property. More than a third of respondents said protecting their organization’s brand is top of mind. More than 36 percent of CISOs selected customer data as the highest priority for protection. A majority of respondents also shared they are focusing on protecting intellectual property as one of the most important assets in their care, which they believe is another core target of most malicious actors.
