elly and Kalyn, winners of the 2020 Midwest

married this past April, like many weddings, theirs was also postponed. Although 2020 may have canceled many plans, celebrations and maybe even the big wedding you always dreamed of, 2020 also brought about the intimate, family focused, spurof-the moment, memories that many couples will never forget.

Kelly and Kalyn had each and every detail planned, alongside Anne Cleary, owner of White Lace Bridal, and Melanie Schwab, owner of Melanie Sioux Photography. Anne and Melanie, founders of The Midwest Wedding Giveaway helped these two through the pain and disappointment of canceling their wedding and rescheduling for 2021. “It’s a very somber feeling. We had been looking forward to getting married for so long! We’re so grateful for all of our vendors who have worked with us to postpone and keep our loved ones safe,” exclaims Kalyn.

We are all hoping 2021 will not bring the same cancelations as 2020, but now, at least, we know how to make them work. Whether you are planning for 40 or 400 guests, Bismarck Bridal is here to help plan each step of your happily ever after!

t’s your wedding day, one of the most exciting and memorable days of your life. Every moment of the day is precious and having photos that catch those moments is priceless. From the time the wedding party is getting ready to the sweetness captured during first dances, Ethan Arlien of Ethan Arlien Photography is passionate about capturing not only the most memorable instances but also the unassuming, beautiful times that make your day unforgettable.

photography

The Importance of Experience and Trust In Ethan’s eight years of professional photography experience he has learned a thing or two about wedding days. One being that trust between a couple and their photographer is incredibly important. It starts from the first meeting and continues as planning and mapping out the day unfolds. “As a photographer, I’m there to capture those moments that a couple doesn’t get to see or that I know they’ll want to see because of the relationship we’ve built from our first meeting,” Ethan explains. Document Your Day … All of It Your wedding day is arguably the most important day of your life. Because of this, Ethan urges couples to recognize the importance of having a photographer to document their whole day. “Throughout the entire day there are moments that should be documented. Have your photographer start when your day starts,” Ethan explains and adds, “Even if you think you aren’t going to want these pictures, you’ll have them to look back on in 50 years.”

Ethan Arlien | Ethan Arlien Photography www.bismarckphotostudio.com

A typical wedding day for Ethan begins around 7am and wraps around 10pm. His wedding packages are completely customizable, and he works closely with couples to build their shot list. From this he builds an itinerary to ensure he and his photography partners get everything everyone wants. “We are the best reminders, and we keep your day flowing,” Ethan says. They capture everything including detail shots and basic pictures. “Then,” Ethan explains, “we get creative with it and incorporate things in and out of your day.” Photographer for a Day, Friend for a Lifetime Documenting moments is a part of Ethan’s job as a photographer and he is honored to spend so much time with couples on their wedding day. “When people come in and are crying looking at their photos because they are so happy it’s so good. It’s so good,” explains Ethan. And the coolest part of all of this is when his couples come back for more major life moments. “It’s not only documenting those moments as their photographer but being able to share in them as a friend.”

etting engaged is exciting and just the beginning of many opportunities to celebrate in anticipation of your wedding day. Engagement party? Bridal shower? A place to gather with your nearest and dearest to get ready for your big day? We’ve got you covered with Bismarck Photo Studio. It is the perfect space for all the ways you want to celebrate before you say, ‘I do.’

venue

Great Location Centrally located in Bismarck next to City Brew Coffee, with convenient access to the interstate, the Bismarck Photo Studio began as just that, a photo studio. Ethan Arlien and 3 photographer friends were looking for a spot and found the raw space that is now the Photo Studio. For the first year Ethan used the space exclusively for his photography business. But, after renting it out to a couple of individual high school groups for their proms, Ethan decided to open the space to all of Bismarck including photographers and events. Stunning Space The 800+ square foot space has a light and airy feel and is the perfect blank canvas for a variety of events. Exposed 14-foot ceilings in the main space lend an industrial feel. A faux brick wall is grounded by wood floors, and gorgeous windows throughout the space provide stunning natural light. If the light and airy feel of the space was not enough, the view overlooking an undeveloped hill might just make you forget you’re in Bismarck. “It really is a good private event space,” Ethan explains.

Ethan Arlien | Bismarck Photo Studio www.bismarckphotostudio.com

Get Ready, Get Set A smaller room off the main space is a perfect area for doing hair and makeup the morning of your wedding. A full-length mirror, long tables, and stools provided in house streamline the getting ready process. To help alleviate stress, wedding parties can get access to the Studio the night before to drop off dresses and any other necessities needed for the next day. Make it Yours When reserving Bismarck Photo Studio for your event you have carte blanche when it comes to catering and decorating. “When you’re there, the space is yours,” Ethan explains. The Studio has a prop room available if you’d like to decorate the space yourself, or you could bring in a decorator. The same goes for catering. If you love your mom’s cooking, she is welcome to bring it in or you could hire a caterer to bring in your favorite meal. The Bismarck Photo Studio is an unexpected gem, and its blank canvas is perfect for hosting your pre-wedding events, and maybe even creating a tradition. “It’s a place to keep coming back to year after year, celebration after celebration,” Ethan says smiling.

irst a Client…Forever a Friend’ is Gail Flom’s motto. The licensed REALTOR® at Alliance Real Estate, Inc. relies on her work ethic and 8 years of experience to ensure that when buying a home, the process is exciting and anything but stressful. You’ve said ‘I do’ to each other, now it’s time to say ‘Sold!’ to the home of your dreams.

"[Gail is] patient, caring, and worked hard to help me understand the process of buying my first home. I couldn't ask for a better person." Sandy, Bismarck, ND Getting to know people is one of Gail’s favorite parts of being a REALTOR®. “I like to take the approach of building a rapport,” explains Gail, “I can relate to a lot of people across a lot of ages and genders.” Getting to know her clients and their wants and needs in a home allows Gail to streamline the process and not waste her client’s time. A former federal law enforcement officer, Gail also has experience in property management. These prior careers allowed Gail to hone her attention to detail and documentation. When it comes to contracts and negotiations, she is adept at navigating the ins and outs and dedicated to getting her clients the best deal possible. Communication was paramount to success in her previous careers and Gail continues to make it a priority with her real estate clients.

“Gail provided us with the confidence we needed to keep the first-time home buying experience a positive one. She was always available and continued to be understanding showing after showing. Gail doesn’t sell you a home and disappear, but rather continues to follow-up and visit. There isn’t a better REALTOR out there!” Stephany & Josh, Lincoln, ND Finding a home you love can be difficult and Gail understands the importance of patience, “I’ll continue to look for a house that checks every box no matter how long it takes,” she says. “For me, it’s more important for people to buy the right home than it is for me to make the sale.” Gail’s best advice when beginning the home buying process is to get pre-approved. “The pre-approval process is so important, especially in the market we’re in,” she says. Couples will want to meet with a lender and know what they qualify for. “If they find a home that they want they need to know if they’ll be approved,” Gail explains. “This makes sure I’m showing them the right homes and getting them into something they can afford.” After the ‘Congratulations!’ and ‘Best Wishes,’ contact Gail so she can help you find the perfect home to unpack your wedding gifts and begin an amazing life together.

P

izza? At your wedding? That’s a big, ‘Dude! Yes!’ from Nick Schwieters and Colton Shoults, two owners of The CraftCade, Bismarck’s gnarliest New York style pizzaria. The CraftCade is approaching two years of providing ‘80s and ‘90s nostalgia in a retro arcade to the Bismarck/Mandan area. After winning multiple ‘Best of ’ awards in the Bismarck Tribune’s ‘Best of the Best’ competition, The CraftCade is excited to provide you and your wedding guests with totally tubular grindage on your big day.

catering

A Radical Idea Nick, Colton, and the team at The CraftCade was inspired to offer up The CraftCade’s New York style pizza as a catering option after attending a wedding where the bride ordered pizzas halfway through her reception. “You know, she’s all dolled up and then she brings in pizza,” Nick explains, “I think pizza is generally considered this type of food that’s not elegant but in a wedding, things are made elegant. To take food like that and turn it on its head makes it more desirable and more attractive,” he adds. Totally Bomb Menu The CraftCade offers interesting and elevated flavors like barbeque and Thai, as well as more traditional pie, all with names reminiscent of popular ‘80s and ‘90s culture. The CraftCade offers an outstanding gluten free crust that maintains the crispy texture of a traditional New York slice. “Our gluten free crust is the best you’ll find anywhere,” Nick says. PROVIDED BY THE CRAFTCADE

The CraftCade Team | The CraftCade www.thecraftcade.com

Not to be missed on The CraftCade’s menu is their tasty selection of salads. Their fresh cut, high quality salads include cleverly named choices like the Kelly Kipowski and the Double Dragon. “If you want a plate full of pizza that’s great, but if you add a salad now you have more of a complete meal,” Nick explains. Bodacious Service When booking The CraftCade to cater your wedding you’re getting more than the greasy, cardboard boxes filled with limp, lukewarm slices. You and your guests get incredible pizza and an excellent experience. A pizza warmer will ensure your guests are provided with perfectly crispy, bendy New York style slices covered in warm, delicious toppings and melty cheese. The fully staffed experience invites guests to visit a table and choose from plates of fresh slices clearly labeled and ready to enjoy. With someone from CraftCade staffing the table all of your guests will be celebrating all night long. “Your maid of honor or best man won’t be distracted and worrying about pizza service,” Nick says smiling, “We class it up and make it a nice experience.” If you’re looking for a rad and memorable culinary experience for your wedding, The CraftCade is the perfect choice for your perfect day.

t’s the little moments that inspire Kristen Steichen, owner of Krismarie Photography. “I really emphasize capturing moments. I think that is the most amazing thing about photography. You can take any picture you want, and it represents one moment forever,” she explains. A fifth-grade teacher by trade and photographer by passion, Kristen is happiest shooting summertime weddings, engagements, and senior photos.

photography

Looking closely at the logo for Krismarie Photography you’ll notice two things, a clock and a camera. The clock is the lens of the camera and the time on the clock is 3:01. This is deeply significant to Kristen as 3:01 is a direct reference to Ecclesiastes 3:1 in which it’s stated, “There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under the heavens.” This verse is an anthem for Kristen’s work, “I think that’s what photography represents. We can capture any time we want; whether it’s a happy time, exciting time, or a sad time. I prefer to do the happy and exciting,” she explains. Kristen strives to make her business centered through Christ and in doing so loves photographing genuine Christian couples. “People who have a pure, genuine love for Christ and each other. You can see it in their eyes and throughout their day,” she says smiling. Kristen is known for her light and airy style. “I like everything to be light and bright and white and vibrant. I really want to show that, especially when people on their wedding day are so happy and radiant. Having all those vibrant colors is great.” Kristen Steichen | Krismarie Photography www.krismariephotography.org

Along with her light and airy style, Kristen likes to incorporate movement. “I like when couples are dancing and swaying and hugging and moving,” she says. “I like capturing the candid shots, the family’s reactions and the big emotions and their natural personalities.” To accomplish this, and to help people forget she is there, Kristen doesn’t use a lot of equipment that could get in the way or take away from the day. Kristen doesn’t have a lot of rigid rules. Each wedding she does is unique to the couple and Kristen will make sure they’re getting every shot they want. “I want to be the couple’s advocate, and I want to do everything I can so they get their wants and needs met,” Kristen says. In talking with Kristen her passion for photography is evident. Her eyes light up and her voice changes as she speaks of her craft and the couples she’s worked with.

ALEXIS EBERLE - GLASSER IMAGES

f you are on the fence about a videographer for your wedding, don’t be. Videography allows you to relive the best day of your life with movement, sound, music, and so much emotion. In addition to photography, video captures it all. Because videography is so incredibly customizable, the Glasser Images videographers can tell your unique love story like no one else can. Red Carpet Service When booking videography with Glasser Images you can expect the same top-notch service as the studio’s photography side. “It’s red carpet service, we are going to be there every step of the way,” explains McLauryn Alexander, Client Consultant at Glasser Images. To accomplish this, couples will work with a Client Consultant to build a timeline for their day and to ensure that everything they want is covered.

Videography Logistics Before the big day, the couple will meet with their videographer to go over the wedding day logistics. “We have meetings with the couple to communicate what to expect from us and so we know what to expect from them,” Kevin Fedde, Glasser Images Videographer and Photographer, explains. “Its building what they need to do to get the product they want and explaining that it takes more time to set up than photography.” Conveying Emotion The one thing you don’t get from photos is sound. Kevin suggests writing a love letter to each other that will be read by the couple and used as a voiceover during their video. There are a lot of emotions that can be captured during a letter reading or as well during your vows and toasts from parents or siblings. “There’s a lot of emotion conveyed from people’s voices, from people’s facial expressions while they’re talking, and you get all of that from video. You don’t necessarily get that from pictures,” says Kevin. McLauryn adds, “The letter or vow reading brings it all full circle. It’s beautiful.” Glasser Images videographers set moments of your day to spoken words and music, captivating both the eyes and the ears and taking you back to the best day of your life. They are masters at their craft and catching the fleeting, treasured times you may have otherwise missed. “Video adds that extra level of emotion and ability to connect,” Jack Glasser, founder of Glasser Images explains. “Those in-between moments are what we live for.“ Your wedding video will be a beautiful, intimate representation of your day that you’ll truly enjoy revisiting year after year.

Boho Bride

Stylist: Kaitlin Rahrich Makeup Artist: Amanda Lanenga

The Boho Bride is a very up and coming look in the industry right now. We are seeing lots of brides embrace perfectly imperfect texture, subtle volume, and big bold braids. Utilizing these delicate and neutral toned flowers from Concrete Daisiez really brings the down to earth and romantic vibe of this look to the next level. When it comes to makeup the Boho Bride is free-spirited and inspired by nature. Her foundation has a glow to it and her eyes are soft and romantic. To create the lip Amanda used a nude lip liner with a sheer gloss overlay.

Edgy Bride

Stylist: Macy Nelson Makeup Artist: Jenna Galt

There are no rules when it comes to the bride that has an edgy style! This look was created using curling irons of different sizes and a crimper to create a look full of volume and texture. To enhance this bride's bold look we added temporary spray color to give fun pops of color. The Edgy Bride has airbrush foundation with a dark and bold lip. Jenna finished the look with a deep plum smokey eye to add drama and fun to the look.

Modern Bride

Stylist: Laura Rogers Makeup Artist: Brittany Helfrich

The Modern Bride's style is contemporary and simplistic. Laura styled her bride's hair into a high pony tail with lots of fullness and volume. She has very long and thick hair that was perfect for the full pony tail but we still needed to add extensions around the base for coverage and fullness. We have extensions on hand at Glance to add to any style to create the look you are going for. To create a modern looking make up vibe Brittany kept the bride's eyes soft and simplistic and chose gold tones to make her eyes pop. A bold cheek color, with contour and shimmery highlighter on the top of the cheek bones kept the look striking and contemporary. A soft matte lip finishes the look off.

Traditional Bride

Stylist: Jessica Tergesen Makeup Artist: Keanna Kostelecky

The Traditional Bride is all about enhancing natural beauty and creating a timeless look with a touch of glam. The low upstyle with the textured volume is the most popular wedding style we see. There is something so classic and beautiful about it that keeps this look coming back season after season. For a bride going with a more tradtional wedding look its all about choosing colors that enhance their natural beauty. A dark brown smokey eye with gold accents, subtle liner, and strip lashes bring natural beauty while keeping the classic vibe.

Over or Under? The big debate! Veil under the hair or above? What should I do? There is no right or wrong way to wear your veil and as stylists we are able to secure it either way.

The main thing to think about is the look that it creates. It is a totally different look from the front and the side if you wear it under or over and that is the most important factor to consider. We think on top of the hair is a more traditional look and under is a more modern or contemporary feel.

the dress

It’s a fairy tale, putting on that white dress, looking into that mirror, twirling around and feeling like a princess. Each and every bride-to-be should feel like a queen when trying on gowns for their big day. You want to feel your best, be comfortable, and love what you are wearing. The mission at White Lace Bridal is to make each and every woman glow from the inside out; to make her feel like the dress she says yes to is the one she will remember for years to come and always make her feel like she is in a fairy tale. Anne Cleary has been in the wedding gown business for years and is the owner of White Lace Bridal. She has cultivated a team that knows exactly how to help each unique bride find their perfect dress.

“It all begins with the appointment. As you walk in, you are greeted by your consultant and get whisked away to the fitting room. Your consultant will want to know how long until your wedding, what type of style you think works for your body, what type of bride you want to be aesthetically whether it’s sparkle or lace or simple and where you envision your price point or what you’re planning to spend on your wedding dress. From there, we will pull gowns for you that we think will fit those specifications, as well as let you look through the racks and see if anything catches your eye. We’ve found it’s almost just as important to rely on your consultant to find things for you, because the amount of dresses in White Lace Bridal can be very daunting. There are so many options that it can become overwhelming and we want this experience to be nothing but, fun," Anne explains. "The consultant’s job is to understand what you’re looking for and then to make sure that they are giving you these options from our racks. The sample options at White Lace Bridal range anywhere from a 4 to a 28. In theory bridal runs small, so a 4 is actually a 0 in regular clothing. We try to make sure that we have something at different price points and at different size ranges for you to try on,” expresses Anne.

What type of bride ar you? Whimsical

the dress

Words like boho or ethereal come to mind when you’re describing your dream wedding day look. Unique materials and details combined with comfort are at the top of your priority list. The “Belinda” gown is perfect for an outdoor wedding. Add a flower or two to your hair and mixed and matched bridesmaids dresses in soft dusty tones to make your boho dreams come true.

Classic

When you think of your gown, you want to look back and love it just as much in 20 years - it’s that classic of a style! Classic brides tend to be born romantics and lean towards more timeless silhouettes such as A-line and ball gowns. A sleeve or offthe-shoulder detail can elevate your style even more. The “Mallory” gown can be styled from effortless to princess level and pairs so well with a dramatic cathedral length veil.

Modern

Elopement

The 2020 wedding season was unlike any other, and it has really had brides adjusting their wedding style and size. If you are looking to plan a more intimate mini-mony or you decide to elope, this might change the plans you originally had for a gown. Elopement style gowns can be anything from tea-length to a full length gown with a short train, but there tends to be a few similarities between them. Gowns like the “Raelyn” gown provide the perfect balance of truly feeling like a bride but a little bit more casual to embrace any setting. Comfortability and an affordable price point are also important, and is another reason why this gown is so great!

The “Anthony” gown is the perfect sophisticated gown to pair with next-level accessories and a dapper black and white groom-look to make a true modern statement.

Steps to take before dress shopping Set a Date

the dress

Not every bride has the exact date set when they decide to shop for a wedding dress, but typically knowing things like your venue and season of your wedding can help you envision your bridal look easier.

Invite your girl gang

Every bride has a group they want with them when they find their gown. Keep in mind that typically a small group of supportive family and friends is best, and a large group can sometimes cause more stress on a day that should be special and fun. Also, it’s important to know any limitations of group size a bridal shop may have before deciding on who to invite.

Pre-Shop

It’s important not to get too set on a particular style before trying gowns on. But it is good to start to try to decide what styles interest you, like our breakdown of bridal types on the previous page or just scrolling through Pinterest to see what catches your eye.

Set a Budget

It’s good to know what you’re comfortable spending and who plans to buy the gown before you start trying dresses on. Every boutique has a different range of price, so don’t be afraid to ask a store their average pricing when making your appointment to help find the best stores to fit your budget.
