LETTER

BISMARCK MAGAZINE TEAM I don’t know about you, but Bismarck Magazine is ready for 2018! The holidays are wrapped up and we are getting ready to take on the next year. It’s time to reset ourselves, our goals and start over fresh. The holiday stress is over, so let’s restart! We believe that 2018 is going to be an incredible year for our entire community. This is an exciting time for Bismarck/Mandan/Lincoln. Major construction projects and a downtown revitalization, including new restaurants and boutiques, prove our community is rapidly growing. We are excited to announce that our team and company are growing, too. Bismarck Magazine is expanding and adding another magazine named River + Ranch. This new magazine is a collaborative effort that will showcase the creativity and design of homes in western North Dakota. Look for River + Ranch February 1st at over 300 different locations around our community. Not only are we adding a second magazine, but we are also excited to announce two new team members, Jennifer Kranz as Editor and Anna Schwieters as our new intern and social media coordinator. We are excited and humbled to be part of this community as we begin our third year. Our team at Bismarck Magazine, and now River + Ranch, is ready to take on 2018 and continue to build culture in this amazing community. Let this issue inspire and push you to try something new and check out the new businesses in town. Happy 2018 Bismarck/Mandan/Lincoln! It’s going to be a great year!

FORMER MATHISON’S BUILDING BEFORE 12

BISMARCK MAGAZINE | JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2018

112

N 4TH STREET By Madalyn Laske

Before owning multiple properties in Bismarck, Rolf Eggers began Eggers Audio and Video. Until recently, his 13,000 square foot video store was a fixture in the community for 34 years. “I started that when I was 19,” Eggers said. “That was 1982.” Ever since, Eggers has been investing in real estate. He started buying in downtown Bismarck and moved into residential areas until eventually buying property in Florida. “I sold about two-thirds of what I owned in Bismarck during the oil boom,” Eggers said. “Then, I bought in Florida after the crash and that’s done well. Now, I’m selling Florida and buying back in town.” Buying and selling real estate is in Eggers’ blood. His father owns the Luna and Anderson buildings. As his father slowly starts to relinquish the reigns of his properties in Bismarck, Eggers and his four siblings have begun plans to develop the Anderson building into something profitable. “EAPC Architects have been hired to do a study,” Eggers said. “That’s all we’ve done so far, is scheduled a study. When you have a large building like that the building codes are far more complex.” The community should stay tuned for what’s next for the building. “The best place to have office space is downtown because people really want to be here,” Eggers said. “But that’s probably what it’s not going to be. The current residents are absolutely wonderful. They have been tenants there a long time and they absolutely love it.” Looking out onto the Missouri river, the building is set up perfectly for potential high-end rental units.

REDEFINING RESOLUTIONS

Making a resolution for the new year can feel motivating, refreshing, and bring hope for a better year ahead. We all know some of the most popular resolutions: losing weight, getting “fit,” or embarking on some sort of health improvement journey. In January resolution-ers are enthusiastic to change. But by the second week of February, 80% of those resolutions that started with such bright hope are completely null and void. Why is that? For any New Year’s resolution to be successful it takes changing behavior and habits. We set all these resolutions but we fail to address our ability to sustain motivation and how we’re going to handle the stress and discomfort that often accompanies change.

Set RealiStic GoalS Creating goals that are unrealistic can lead to disappointment. Keeping your goals within reach is important to staying motivated to work towards them.

Celebrate SuCCeSSeS Tangible rewards can be very motivating. Since you’ve already set realistic goals, assign a small reward to each accomplishment. Some ideas for rewards are: go see a movie, buy new walking shoes, take a bubble bath, get a massage, visit a friend, enroll in an exercise class, sleep-in one day, read a book, etc.

Set up your
