mall businesses around the Bismarck area have an extraordinary quality. They allow owners to use inspiration and portray

passion in a homegrown way. A University of Mary freshman has done just that by hand-painting canvas shoes to fit the specified interests of her customers. This is why AnneMarie Hansen never has two pairs that look exactly the same, just how she likes it. “It is a big learning curve, which makes it really fun,” Hansen said. It was never Hansen’s intention to have her product become a full blown business. When she first came up with the idea of hand-painted shoes, she was a high school art student just trying to develop something that met her own desires. “All of these people online had started making shoes, but they were starting in the hundreds of dollars. I was like, 'Hey, I know how to paint,’ so I started from there,” Hansen stated. “I wanted to be able to show the things that I loved and do it at a more affordable rate.”

DANIEL BIELINSKI

Bringing the Prairie to the Big Screen by: Bailey Hauf

T

here is a bare expanse for miles, green grasses and wildflowers scatter the horizon. A white farmhouse and an old pick-up truck are the only manmade structures within sight. Yellow, orange, and gold hues ricochet off the beautiful fields as the sunsets beneath the North Dakota landscape. A rather typical view for anyone living in New Salem, but not what one would generally expect to see on the big screen. Yet, the Grand Theaters in Bismarck premiered Daniel Bielinski and Marek Ryszard Dojs’s North Dakota written and filmed short, "You Beautiful Crazy Blind Cripple." “The intention with the movie is to generate a thriving film making scene here in Bismarck and in North Dakota,” Bielinski said. Bielinski, originally from Wisconsin, was pulled from New York where he lived and acted to become the director of the theater program at the University of Mary. When he moved to Bismarck he was unwilling to give up his passions and was determined to find a way to produce Hollywood quality films here in North Dakota. “Essentially, there is no narrative film making in North Dakota, which was something that I Photo by Glasser Images

was interested in changing. I moved from New York where there is an overabundance and I didn’t want my creativity to not have any outlet,” said Bielinski. “Here, meant I had to make my own opportunities. Thankfully people at the university were behind the idea.” Not only did coworkers at the University of Mary support him in his endeavors, but also Bielinski's students were included on his project. This allowed theater majors at the University a hands-on experience that they may have otherwise missed during their college career.

The hope is that from this short and the ones that are to come, other artists will be inspired to create films in North Dakota. It may take a bit of time, but the possibilities are endless and within reach for the community. “We are planning a western film for next summer and we hope to find even more members of the community to contribute to the process in any way that they can,” Bielinski stated. “I think we have the opportunity to put North Dakota on the radar.”

“They were cast in supporting roles in the film and big parts in the crew,” Bielinski said. “We got to meet a lot of good people locally, local professionals, and it was a really good starting point.” Involving students in the production of the film allows Bielinski to create foundations for the creation of quality movies in North Dakota. He is inspired to create movies in the area because he knows that there are talented artists that just need to find an outlet, collaborate and find support from the community to get the ball rolling.

“There needs to be an opportunity for people to get together and create beautiful work,” Bielinski stated. “This premier was to showcase the work to the community. We wanted to show that we are capable of producing industry standard work, because it requires community support for thriving film making to be born.” The stage has already been set. Bielinski believes there is an overabundance of natural beauty in this state and hopes to continue to feature that in his films. He has become inspired to continue making Hollywood level movies by taking advantage of the area’s quintessential style. “I want the future products to take advantage of the beauties that North Dakota has to offer such as the Badlands. There are so many places that we can shoot that have cinematic potential,” Bielinski said. “People loved what they saw and were proud that it was uniquely North Dakotan. Having a film industry in North Dakota is a win, win situation.”

NEW journeys

KATRINA & TERRY

RICHTER

A Wonder of Altruism

by: Madalyn Laske

An insurance agent his whole life, Terry Richter and his wife Katrina now have found a new chapter to their lives, giving back and helping others far away reach their potential.

W

ith power, grace and beauty a 5,604 foot long water curtain drapes over a 360 foot drop

nestled along the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, Africa. Thousands of awe-seeking tourists journey there each year to bask in the grandiosity of Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Last March, Terry and Katrina Richter discovered the Falls not only display indescribable beauty, but are enriched by hearttouching people. From then on, the Richters’ lives were changed in an eyeopening, altruistic way. “I was talking to these people and I realized that by helping them market some of their products, we could do so much good for them,” Terry said. “They don’t want to beg, they don’t want the money. They just want someone to help them.”

The Call Upon arrival at the Victoria Falls entrance, the Richters and other tourists were greeted by African natives selling handcrafted goods. Because most groups take a bus to the falls, many are not prepared with cash to purchase any gifts or souvenirs, resulting in a poor success rate. “When we were visiting with them, they totally caught me off guard asking if we had pencils or if we had paper or if we had soap,” Terry said. “They wanted to trade for supplies rather than money, so their children could go to school.” Many of the goods, sold for pennies on the market, take tedious hours to make with limited tools. However, if the people had a platform to sell their goods, Terry knew they could make profit at a quicker rate. Terry and Katrina not only wanted to help the natives, but they wanted to help them help themselves. “So I realized, as much as I tried to ignore it,” Terry said, “this was a call. I knew why I was there. And it was to help these people.”

The Project In July Terry and Katrina went back to Africa to provide what they call an “internet café” in the village to establish fundamental communication with the Zimbabwean people.

The cafe, made up of six laptops, six routers, a credit card machine, a printer, a scanner and a fax machine, is located about 40 feet from the falls in a beautiful area. Nothing is perfect yet however, they still remedy hiccups on a day-today basis. “We are having issues because the baboons and monkeys take the wires down since they run wild around this area,” Terry said. Selling goods to tourists is the natives’ primary source of income. “I told the people, 'Take a picture of your family and hang that picture up,” Terry said. “Then when tourists come, you can tell them this is how you feed your family,' and it turns it completely around to a human element. This is not just a souvenir, this is their family.” Prior to the project, the average income was about $300 per month. Now the cafe generates about $100 per day and retains a teacher (paid by the Richters) to show the merchants how to use the computers. “Before the cafe, the biggest sale I think was $70 (at a time),” Terry said. “We got them a credit card machine with an account and the first day a gentleman made a $250 sale. Now they can accommodate the people that are coming.”

Not only do the Richters provide financial stability to the villagers, they want to show them how much self worth they have.

Terry and Katrina also donated a laptop to a local school in Livingstone, Zambia. The makeshift “computer” classes before the generosity of the Richters consisted of a photograph of a computer, keyboard and a mouse. Most of 42 BISMARCK MAGAZINE | NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2016

“The thing that is so important is to see the transformation in these people,” Terry said. “When they are able to give back they stand taller. It’s like they are worth a million dollars. They are worth something. They can give back and they have a reason.”

The Extra

The first time Terry and Katrina went to the Falls, they met an African albino man named Webson. Webson changed their life and kick-started their project. “This young man was out there playing an instrument and

Giving Hearts Day is inviting you to #GoMatchyMatchy for a charity you love and challenge your friends to do the same. It’s an effort to grow the online giving event, which over nine years has raised more than $30 million for over 300 charities across North Dakota. #GoMatchyMatchy is a fun and creative way to join with friends to show support of a charity you love. “Over 14,000 individual donors found a charity to love in 2016,” said Sara Stolt, Giving Hearts Day director atDakota Medical Foundation (DMF), the event’s host. “We’re asking those donors to ask a friend or two to ‘match’ their commitment to their charity or any charities they support.” If every person who plans to give takes a #GoMatchyMatchy selfie, posts it to social media and challenges just one friend to match their commitment to the charity of their choice on February 9, the number of donors on Giving Hearts Day could easily double. The potential to improve lives across North Dakota is endless.

DMF and its sister organization, Impact Foundation, established the Impact Institute to teach thousands of people from over 360 area charities how to better tell their mission stories, promote online giving and lead conversations with donors—prepping them for a one-day home run and giving them a fundraising system they can use all year long. They’ve learned a whole system for attracting donors, building a sustaining donor base and raising major gifts. But never before has Giving Hearts Day been so visual, or asked the public to get involved in such a visible way.

a fun matchy-matchy #2 Post photo with your friend using hashtag #GoMatchyMatchy anytime from now until February 9 to show your support and help raise awareness for Giving Hearts Day.

“We’re asking people to do a good thing, but more importantly, we’re asking them to have fun doing it,” Stolt said. “Giving is joyful.” Giving Hearts Day is powerful because it inspires so many to give for the first time or contribute to newly-discovered charities. Donations are processed through givingheartsday. org, but go directly to the charities. Organizations typically find that 25 percent of donations come from new givers. It’s the start of a fulfilling relationship: new donors learn about great causes, and organizations learn about people who’ve signaled their support for their important missions. To learn more about Giving Hearts Day and view the 2017 participant list go to www.impactgiveback.org

Ask a friend to match your commitment to donate to a charity on Giving Hearts Day. You can each pick your own charity and dollar amount or you can #GoMatchyMatchy all the way!
