A DAY OF GIVING Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” Let’s make a life, a life of giving. Giving Hearts Day (GHD) is a great way to start giving back, and the best part about giving is that it is all local, you are supporting the local charities within your own city.
WHAT IS GIVING HEARTS DAY Giving Hearts Day began as a simple idea that sprouted from the Dakota Medical Foundation (DMF) twelve short years ago. In 2008, DMF thought of an unique fundraising concept, a single day dedicated solely to giving. In the past decade Giving Hearts Day has turned a small idea of spreading the love into one of the longest running and most successful days of giving across the country, raising over $71 million dollars and rising.
WHY DONATE Giving Hearts Day always falls right around Valentine’s Day, and it’s not a coincidence. It’s a time to not only give your heart to those
close to you, but the people most in need, too. Thursday, February 13, 2020 is your chance to give back and make an impact in the community. Not convinced yet? Check out those who have donated before and why they feel compelled to give:
DON AND SYLVIA SCHMID Don and Sylvia Schmid have been giving to GHD for several years to multiple charities that have touched their hearts and made an impact in both their lives.
One charity they make sure to give to every year is Designer Genes, a Bismarck/Mandan charity that offers support and opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome and their families.
“We had been giving to Giving Hearts Day for years before we met Roxanne with Designer Genes and we were the ones that actually told her about GHD and encouraged her to apply and participate,” says Don. Don and Sylvia take care of the annual application fee for Designer Genes and even donate to part of their matched fund. “We believe in charities and public/private partnerships. GHD is a vehicle to give back to the community that is going to do some good.“
CAROL CASHMAN While playing bridge with her good friend Kathy Keiser, executive Director of the Ronald McDonald House, Carol found out about the wonders of
Giving Hearts Day. “I remember seeing the list of all the charities for GHD after my friend had told me they were participating and going online to donate and being like oh I know them give, to them, oh they do great work, give to them, and I just kept going like that,” laughed Carol. “It was so reassuring that no matter what amount, even small amounts, that they were going a long way and I felt I was getting a bigger bang for my buck.
“All these wonderful charities and people ask throughout the year for you to give and donate. You want to give, but often forget so I keep a list and then give all on that one day.”
As time goes on and Carol
Mary Kay holds a special place near and dear to her heart for the Bismarck charity Tracy’s Sanctuary House, which provides temporary housing for out of town families during a time of need, when a family member is in the hospital or in a life threatening crisis.
continues to participate in GHD, she keeps an ongoing list of her favorite charities throughout the year in order to give on that day.
Carol and her husband have a fun tradition, after 46 years of marriage, instead of gifts they give to their favorite charities on GHD.
MARY KAY LAPP
“For the past three years, I have been giving to Tracy’s Sanctuary House. Kelsey Zottnick, the Director of the charity, told me
her personal story on why Tracy’s House was started, I couldn’t believe it, I wanted to help and I knew this was the charity I wanted to give back to,” explains Mary Kay. Not only does Mary Kay have personal ties to Tracy’s House, but she also believes strongly in the mission. “It’s the perfect idea for the community, we need Tracy’s Sanctuary House here. I can’t imagine being out of town and watching a family member struggle in the hospital then worrying about where to stay. Tracy’s House takes away that worry for people and puts their minds at ease,” says Mary Kay.
SCOTT AND ALISHA RITTER From the beginning, husband and wife Scott and Alisha have been giving on GHD. Scott and Alisha also choose to give to Tracy’s Sanctuary House each year. “Tracy’s Sanctuary House fills a void within our
community. Their mission has touched our hearts and we can’t imagine not supporting it,” expresses Scott. Scott and Alisha believe in being generous and that donating is a privilege and not something to be taken lightly. “We have been truly blessed and because of those blessings we believe it’s our duty to give back to others.” The Ritters were also touched by Tracy’s mission and founding story. Like all charities, it was founded with a purpose and passion to make a difference in our community.
Giving Hearts Day is a day to open your heart and help those around you, give back to those less fortunate and those organizations that are making a difference. Visit givingheartsday. org and find one charity, or multiple, to give back to and know that you are making a difference. Maybe you give up that $5 coffee that day, or maybe, instead of going out to lunch, you give back. Even a dollar counts. Thank you for opening your hearts and helping make this community a better place to call home.

Where did you move from? Emily: Plymouth, Minnesota
When did you move here? Jeremy: August 2018
What brought you here? Jeremy: Family
Emily: Initially, we were just going to come here for a couple months because Jeremy's parent's farm got hit by a tornado. That’s what ultimately brought us here. Then we came here and I was on a work trip in Nashville and Jeremy called me and said 'hey so school starts here next week.' That was foreign to me because in the Cities it’s after Labor Day. I was like oh, I guess we’re going to commit to a year here and see how that goes.
Brekken: (Points at Jeremy) Him Jeremy: I handcuffed them to the roof
Were you excited to come to Bismarck? Brekken: Kinda sad
How do you feel now? Brekken: I feel happy. I met some friends. It feels good to meet new friends. 14
Why have you stayed? Emily: It really comes back to the community. We actually fell in love with the community at Shiloh and found a good church, we go to Evangel. Jeremy's parents are here. And the kids really like it. Brekken is actually the one who asked us over the summer to stay here. Brekken: Yeah, I told them that I actually want to stay here. Jeremy: Yeah, Brekken strapped me to the roof this time.
BISMARCK MAGAZINE | JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2020
Brekken: Yeah, who’s the hunter now?
What does the ice skating rink mean for you? Brekken: Well, last year I didn’t really like hockey, and then I actually wanted to play because Aksel started. Then I realized sports were really awesome because you actually get to shoot and I made some friends.” Emily: “Growing up in Minnesota that’s really what you do. I grew up at the ice rink, so this is really no different, just moved places, and now I have little people.” Jeremy: “I grew up in hockey too, but took about 10 years off and then started old man league again. It’s just a fun way to exercise and not feel old even though you feel old the next day. It’s just a bunch of good people together, it’s fun.”

about it. With all the military moves that I’ve made and couple academic moves this probably has been the most heartfelt welcome that I have received and I think that the University of Mary is a special place as well.

What brought your family to Bismarck? Caprice: We both had really great job opportunities and started to really think seriously about the area, the schools, the quality of life here, and the more we looked into it, the more inviting it became and the more interesting it became. It seemed like everything all fit not only career wise but personal.
How long have you lived in Bismarck? Caprice: 4 months
Where are you from originally? Colin: Originally Florida, but with many stops between here and there. I spent 11 years in the military, so I ended up going through England, Virginia, Florida- that’s when we got married so that would’ve been back in 2002. In 2003 we moved to Colorado, lived there for 2.5 years, moved back to Florida. We were only supposed to be there for three years, but we ended up staying 10 before going to Pennsylvania for 5. We were 16
both at Penn State for a while, and then Caprice ended up taking a job outside of academia in health care still at Penn State when this opportunity ended up presenting itself.
What do you love most about Bismarck? Caprice: For me, I really like a couple things. One is we can get outdoors, I like that. The kids, we have two daughters 8 and 12, and when we moved here in the summer I think they really enjoyed riding their bikes and being outside. The other thing is I really like the people that I work with; they’re just a really nice, wonderful, welcoming group and so in that respect I think its been an easy transition, to feel like we’re part of a group already, so I enjoy that. Colin: I’d never been to North Dakota before, I came up for the job interview so this was state 49 out of 50. Oregon is the only one that’s left. I expected Bismarck to be pancake flat and bland, but I have really enjoyed the scenery even though I consider myself a mountains person. Now I’ve been outside on 15 degree days on long runs and don’t even think twice
BISMARCK MAGAZINE | JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2020
What’s your favorite thing to do so far? Caprice: “Our daughter is twelve, her name is Moorea, and I really like going down by the river with her to go roller blading. The other thing is enjoying new things like learning how to curl. I’ve been trying out a women’s hockey league so things like that that we would just normally do that have been really fun as well.” Colin: Curling by far. I look forward to it every week. I’ve been trying to find ways to do it more but it just hasn’t worked out yet, but I’m curling in a late Monday league and it is one of the highlights of my week. Caprice: Our daughter is learning how to curl as well, Etta, she’s eight.
Do you have a favorite restaurant? Caprice: We’re trying as many as we can. We’ve gone back several times to Mackenzie River. We take people there when they come visit, actually.
What surprised you most about Bismarck? Colin: So this might be shocking. One of the first events we went to where we were like okay we’re going to leave the kids at home, we’re going to go out, and have an afternoon to ourselves. We went to the First Annual Beer and Donuts event. The first people we met there were not from ND, they were from Caprice's home town in Florida.

Did you always know you were going to move here when you had a family?

Where did you move here from and what brought you here? Also, what did you go to school for? Nika: I grew up in Bismarck, I was born here. I was homeschooled before I went to Century High School. I graduated in 2005, and went away to college in Tennessee to the Lee University. That’s where Ricardo went to play soccer, so we met there. Then we moved to Cleveland, Ohio. Ricardo was playing soccer there. I went to grad school there and worked for a while. When we had kids, we decided to move back to Bismarck to have a family here. My undergraduate major is pre-med and I went to grad school to become a Physician Assistant. Ricardo: I grew up in Haiti. Haiti is a poor country. I played soccer all my life. I played for all the Haitian national teams from U15 all the way up to the senior national team. I played in France and then in 2005 I came to college in the USA. I studied business administration and after college I played professional soccer here in the USA in Columbus. After I played in Ohio, we moved back to Bismarck. I got my master’s in education, and became a teacher. Now, I teach personal finance, Marketing and
French at Century High school. I also own a soccer academy in Bismarck that has around 800 kids.
Nika: No, I kind of suspected when we’d have kids that we might, but I didn’t realize how different other parts of the country were and how challenging it would be to our opinions and beliefs. So living in Cleveland was just really tough. I worked in healthcare there and some of the different ways of practicing were challenging the way that I wanted to do it, and so it was a big relief to come back to what I was familiar with.”
What is your favorite place to hang out as a family?
Nika: He owns Magic Soccer FC, so that’s one of the reasons we moved back here, too. We knew it would be a good opportunity to start his business. He always wanted to own a soccer club.
Nika: Our house. Our backyard is really nice for family.
What do you enjoy about Bismarck?
What surprised you about coming back to Bismarck?
Ricardo: I like the people. They are nice people, they are very kind. I also like the outdoors, because I grew up in Haiti. Where I grew up was more like the countryside of Haiti, so it reminds me of home. All the stuff that I used to do growing up, I can do here. And also, I enjoy hunting since I was introduced to it.
Ricardo: I think the biggest change is the growth in diversity here. We used to come here when we were dating in like 2005. I remember there weren’t many black people here in 2005 or 2006 even. There is a rapid growth of diversity here which is good. I think that shaped the town well enough, and it’s good for both sides; it’s good for the people that are in Bismarck expanding a little bit and it’s good for the outsiders that are coming in to experience a different culture and be taken care of. And not just international people, but also with the oil boom a lot of people from different states move here as well. So I think it not only provides economic opportunity for Bismarck as a whole, but also the diversity - for people to live together and understand life from a deeper perspective.
Nika: The kindness of the people and just the generosity and thinking of other people.
What do you think about the snow? Ricardo: In Haiti it’s always hot, but here there is excitement. It changes

rea 57 is a new development from EPIC Companies set to open in the summer of 2020. The space will be located next to the Bismarck Surgical Associate Center and Light of Christ High School just off 57th Avenue NW. This unique development will contain both residential and commercial units to fit all of your needs. The residential options include one bedrooms, two bedrooms, and two story two bedrooms. Area 57 offers an alternative living option in a prime location, near great schools. McKenzy Olson, a native of Mohall, ND and VP of Marketing and Public Relations for EPIC Companies said “the biggest thing Area 57 is bringing is a sense of community and a gather destination location.” Olson explained the second phase of the development will include the gather space meant to showcase such events as vendor shows, acoustic performances, and movie nights, among other functions. This outdoor space is intended to be north Bismarck’s destination location and entertainment district. Area 57 will bring to Bismarck a destination to gather and host events 365 days a year. Although the location may have some playground equipment for kids to play, it is not meant to be just a park. It will also be a space to host events as well. With
the combination of residential and commercial spaces, these events will come about organically to best serve the community and its desires. “There are so many people in this community involved with the arts, they are very creative, and they have a lot of different ideas for events and things to host” Olson said. Area 57 is a space that will allow them to offer their events to the community. Area 57 will be a lively, energetic, and entertaining area that allows not only its residents but the entire community to come together. It will be a place where you may stop and grab a snack or go workout and then see an event going on and join in the fun. “It is a community within a community. It’s places that you live, play, hangout, and work” said Olson. Blake Nybakken, from Minot, ND turned Bismarck local and Vice President of Development for EPIC Companies said “Area 57 is a true master plan development. Residents [will] like it when it’s cold outside they can run downstairs and get a drink or a bite to eat. It works out well for the commercial tenants, too because they have a built-in client base.” Area 57 is on track to open summer

Shiny & NEW

alking into the remodeled Zorell’s Jewelry store you are transported to old Hollywood, surrounded by the shimmer and shine of beautiful jewelry and glamorous finishes. You’re greeted by beautiful, crystal chandeliers and to your left is the Wine and Shine Bar and to your right you’ll see a spacious showroom with marble floors and lights bouncing off diamond jewelry. “No matter which direction you go, you’re going to have fun,” says owner Tim Ell, smiling. Tim opened Zorell’s Jewelry store 14 years ago in a 2,000 square foot store front. Now, after 4 years of precise planning and approximately six months of construction, Zorell’s Jewelry store has opened their stunning new 7,000 square foot showroom. To achieve the dramatic transformation, Tim worked with award-winning jewelry store designer Leslie McGwire to ensure his vision was perfectly executed. “My wife and I love classic movies, so we wanted our store to feel like classic, vintage Hollywood. My instruction to Leslie was to make the store look like Fred Astaire or Ginger Rogers,” explains Tim. True to Zorell’s tagline walking into the store will give you goosebumps. Not only is the increased showroom size visually appealing it also allows Tim to bring fashion jewelry that has rarely been seen in the Midwest, let alone North Dakota, to his clients. “Because of our smaller store front bridal was our focus,” Tim explains. Now, with the increased
footprint, the sky is the limit and Tim has worked hard to bring brands like John Hardy who makes beautiful handwoven, sterling silver chains and bracelets and French designer Frédéric Duclos to Bismarck. By offering new and different designers and fashion jewelry Tim is looking forward to attracting a new clientele. “We have a large area of the store that caters to the woman that wants to get something for herself because she works hard, and she deserves to spoil herself. It’s a gift from her, to her,” he explains. Tim’s favorite part of the new store is the Wine and Shine bar, an idea he came up with, and trademarked, years ago. The Wine and Shine is a glamourous replacement for your standard jewelry clean and check that both Zorell’s clients and non-clients are welcome to enjoy. “I wanted to make this more of a memory and make it enjoyable. It’s been a great hit so far,” Tim says, smiling. It is the hub of the showroom and a way for Zorell’s staff to entertain clients while they wait, turning a chore into a more enjoyable and memorable experience. After dreaming of a new store for years, Tim couldn’t be happier with the results of the new Zorell’s Jewelry store, especially because of the feeling it brings his clients. “The best moments are when people enter for the first or second time and it takes their breath away. There isn’t a wall or corner in the store that doesn’t look beautiful.” He adds, “It’s a sexy store, and we’re having a lot of fun with it.”

Cold Car Care story: Maria Fleck photos: Glasser Images
E
xtremely cold weather is hard on your vehicle, especially if it has to be parked outside overnight. In North Dakota, the cold weather lingers longer than most of us would like, making everyday tasks like driving more complicated. Thankfully, we were once again able to sit down with Rachel Gietzen, owner and president of Quik Service Inc/Bismarck and Mandan Tire Centers, to find out what is necessary to prepare your vehicle for the winter. How does the cold affect my car? Winter weather affects the features of cars in various ways, and your tires are one of the first to be affected. For every 10 degrees the temperature drops, your tire drops by 1-2 PSI (pounds per square inch). Rachel Gietzen explains a few more results of frigid temperatures, “When the temperatures really drop, that breaks things, so check your oil level, make sure nothing is leaking and check your belts, because they get brittle. Also, your battery will go dead if it hasn’t been started in a while.” Another overlooked factor is wiper blades, which should be replaced every six months. “Coming into the winter you are constantly having junk thrown up and it can be dangerous if you can’t see,” Rachel says. “Same thing with washer fluid. These are things we take for granted, but when you get in that moment, and you can’t see and then it’s slippery, it can be really dangerous.” 46
What are the most important things to check on my car? “Test your battery, test the tire pressure, and make sure your antifreeze is good for 40 below temperatures.” These are the top three things Aaron Zahn, Service Manager for Bismarck and Mandan Tire Centers, recommends one checks as the temperature drops. It is best to check these out before the bad weather hits. “Call us ahead of time,” says Rachel. “Usually we can get you in within a few days no problem, but you always want to do it before that first big snow or before you get trapped. When a snowstorm or 40 below hits, it can be up to a week out, so think ahead if you see something coming. Preventative is the best way.” What are some other tips for winter driving? A few other tips Rachel shared with us were keeping your gas tank at least
half full at all times, having a winter survival kit in your car, and getting your oil checked. Extreme cold thickens oil which can prevent engines from starting. Bismarck and Mandan Tire Centers are full mechanical centers, so they can take care of this for you. “All of our oil changes include full inspections. We will look at everything under the vehicle,” adds Rachel. Bismarck and Mandan Tire Centers also include a free battery test with every oil change. Rachel also stressed the importance of getting your tires rotated, “to make sure that you have the best traction on your vehicle, especially if you are in a two-wheel drive car. You may want to look at snow tires too, they can be really helpful for some of the two-wheel drive cars out there Hopefully, all is well this winter and your car runs without any problems. But even if you do run into mishaps, Rachel doesn’t want you to worry. “We can fix it. That’s the good news! If something happens, we can fix it.”
