Speechless. The Miriam Webster dictionary defines it as, “not capable of being expressed in words or unable to speak.” I must say that is how we feel about entering year five of Bismarck Magazine.
Wow, it’s both shocking and exciting to be celebrating five years of locally producing Bismarck Magazine. As a small, local business we take great pride in our work and are so incredibly proud of the city we get to call home. Over the last five years, we have been able to highlight incredible people, events and businesses across Bismarck, Mandan, and Lincoln.
We'd like to say a big THANK YOU to all of our readers for supporting us over the last five years and our advertisers for making Bismarck Magazine possible. We look forward to another five years and are excited to see what the future holds. As we reflect on our first five years we thought it appropriate to travel back in time and explore where our favorite city came from. Check out some of the historic icons of Bismarck/Mandan as and find out what they're going to be in the future!
It’s an exciting time for this incredible city. Read ahead to see what’s coming up and how the past is becoming an exciting future.

PEOPLE FIRST, JUST LIKE OUR ANCESTORS DID."
Downtown Bismarck is on the edge of returning to all those time-tested elements that make a neighborhood great.
We have unique shops,
restaurants, services and entertainment supported by the largest employment center in central North Dakota. The missing piece of the puzzle was bringing folks back to live in and around downtown Bismarck, near all these great amenities. After years of working with the private sector, city leaders, and developers, downtown Bismarck will see new housing developments spring up in 2020. With residents will come the need for more green/public spaces, essential services, and enhanced transportation. Downtown Bismarck will see millions of dollars of private investment in 2020, some of which you’ll see previewed in this issue of Bismarck Magazine. It’s our job at the Downtowners to support not only our business owners, but our downtown property owners and downtown housing developers. Why? Because downtown Bismarck contributes the most property tax per acre in the community and because residents tend to support businesses near where they live. A strong downtown Bismarck produces benefits city-wide, just like Bismarck’s industrial parks, trail systems, and public buildings. Our downtown also fills a specific and proven need: building places for people first, just like our ancestors did.

EXHIBITION RUNS THROUGH MARCH
How to: Change a Tire story: Maria Fleck photos: Glasser Images
TOOLS NEEDED • Spare Tire • Jack and Jack Stand • Lug Nut Wrench • Lug Nut Key (if car has locking lug nuts) • Bracing Materials (pieces of wood or bricks) • Flashlight • Gloves • Owner’s Manual (for location of lift point and spare tire)
STEP FOUR: Jack up your vehicle without lifting the vehicle up entirely and keeping pressure on the ground. STEP FIVE: Once you have partially jacked up the vehicle, remove all hubcaps or center covers. This will give you access to the lug nuts.
STEP ONE: Park somewhere that is safe, away from traffic, and on a flat surface. Turn on your hazards.
STEP NINE: Place the lug nuts back and tighten them by turning them clockwise with the lug nut wrench. Make sure they’re tight, but avoid using too much force and knocking your car off the jack.
STEP TWO: Place bracing materials behind and in front of a tire that won’t be lifted off the ground. This will prevent rolling and increase stability.
STEP TEN: The last thing to do is check that your lug nuts are still tight after you’ve driven a few miles on them.
STEP SIX: Using a lug nut wrench, turn the lug nuts counterclockwise to unscrew them. STEP SEVEN: If the jack is stable, finish lifting the vehicle to a height where you can lift the tire off without trouble. STEP EIGHT: Once the old tire is off, place the spare tire on the wheel.
STEP THREE: Position your jack under your vehicle’s lift point (reinforced metal ribs designed for safe lifting) to prevent damage to the vehicle.
If you never want to have to change your tires, there’s good news for you, too. Customers of Bismarck and Mandan Tire Centers now have access to a year-long service called To Your Rescue thanks to Goodyear. With any purchase at Bismarck/Mandan Tire Center, you have free roadside service for 365 days and that service renews with each additional purchase. If you are within 25 miles of a store, not only will they change your flat tire, but they will also give you a tow, deliver you fluids, give you a jumpstart, or simply be an extra person if you feel unsafe, anytime of the day or night. Contact the store at 701-223-1722 for more information.
