Health Squad Name: Sotiria Spencer, Supplement and Wellness Explain the accent. I was born in Adelaide, Australia. How did you get to Bismarck? I met my husband playing video games online. I moved here when I was 18. We have been married for 10 years, together for 13. When you arrived from Australia what was your first thought? Cold! What is your favorite part of working at Terry's Health Products? My coworkers, we all have such great comradery. We work hard but have such a good time together. They are such a talented and smart group of people. Our team is what makes our store environment so positive. Supplements and wellness is a lot of information to hold, what is your background? My family is big into health and Australia is a lot more into natural products as well. I grew up around it. I did study it as well. We do webinars at the store so we are constantly learning new information. Sotiria’s Personal Supplement Regimen 1. Maca This is great for energy boosters. You can actually pop open the capsules and stir it in your coffee. It works as a natural pre-work out without making you jittery. It also has 2 grams of protein in it. I use it right before I go to the gym. 2. Vitamin B Complex This is great, especially for women during times of stress. This helps our nervous system which then helps with immunity. It’s also great for people who suffer from migraines and that is why I use them. 3. Liquid Vitamin C Also used for the immune system, it’s great for skin and actually helps with collagen production. I mix up this with the Vitamin B Complex and drink it every day. 4. Ubiquinol This is the active form of CoQ10. It is great for the cardiovascular system. When you see little kids running round like crazy it’s because they have a lot of this in their system. It helps with energy, and I take this once a day. 5. Omega-3 I actually take two of these every day. It is good for eye health, heart health, hair, skin, blood vessels, joints. I am super active, so I use it for my joints. Take it with a meal so you don’t burp up fish all day!

There is no doubting that this has been a rough year and its safe to say we are looking forward to turning the page into 2021. We may have worked from home, learned from home, and remodeled our home because we were sick of staying in our home, BUT not all was bad. This community is truly incredible, from complete pivots to adapting to the times and spreading good we will make it through this! Times have been tough, but this city never ceases to amaze! Restaurants have turned from dine in to take out and family meal bundles; boutiques have started private, small shopping parties and free local delivery; the city voted to approve “to goâ€? drinks from our local bars, gyms got to go virtual with classes, and events were celebrated from the comfort of the couches with many able to join‌via Zoom of course. Times are different to say the least, but we are pulling together as a community. Read how Bismarck Motor Company made a HUGE impact on our small, local businesses by cutting their marketing budget and purchasing high priced gift cards or how Noodlezip created a whole new space to accommodate social distancing. This city is filled with big ideas and even bigger hearts!

ome businesses went above and beyond in generosity to help out their fellow local businesses in the coronavirus pandemic. Bismarck Motor Company made a generous contribution to the Bismarck community in 2020 that gave hope to many small businesses despite the challenges of a shutdown. As the coronavirus began to seriously impact North Dakota, Bismarck Motor Company first ensured that they were able to take care of their employees and keep their business afloat. Then, they focused on helping the community. “At Bismarck Motor Company being good community citizens is one of our core values. We believe that without our community we would be nothing,” said Jenna Adams, brand marketing manager at Bismarck Motor Company. One of the ways Bismarck Motor Company did this at the beginning of the pandemic was by offering rental vehicles to local restaurants for free, so they could start up delivery services. Next, Bismarck Motor Company looked

at their budget and shifted funds in order to allocate $20,000 to give back to the community by purchasing gift cards from local businesses and gifting them to frontline heroes. Moritz Sport and Marine powered by Bimsarck Motor Company donated another $10,000, bringing the total to $30,000. Jenna, along with Shaneille Ulmer, digital sales and marketing manager for Bismarck Motor Company, posted a video on Facebook asking which local businesses needed help. The response to the video was tremendous with over 300 comments suggesting deserving local businesses. In the end, Bismarck Motor Company helped 60 different local businesses. In order to ensure that each contribution made a difference, Bismarck Motor Company bought $500 worth of gift cards from each business in $50 increments. The gift cards were then packaged into small gift bags and given to frontline heroes like hospital workers, firefighters, ambulance workers, and police officers. The feedback from local

22 BISMARCK MAGAZINE | JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2021

business owners and frontline workers was overwhelming. Jenna said she had people call who would break into tears, expressing that the Bismarck Motor Company's generosity meant they were able to pay the rent or keep on an employee for another month. “It’s hard not to cry along with them, because everyone was going through the same thing. It felt really good to help people in the community,” Jenna expressed. The same goes for the frontline workers as Jenna said, “It feels good to directly affect those who have been there for us too.” Bismarck Motor Company always had community as a core value, but Jenna said this was a totally new level. “It shows that when you spend your dollars locally and spend on small businesses, it can go such a long way.” Bismarck Motor Company believes that what you put into a community is what you get out of it. Their generosity kept small local businesses open and exemplifies how to give back and support one another during times of strife.

Do You Have A Virus?

Dr. Axvig at Smiles By Design is not only a dentist but a true innovator. Dr. Axvig and his daughter Dr. Dwyer provide care for all aspects of dentistry, and they also are constantly thinking how to make their practice the most advanced it can be. Since COVID-19 has disrupted all of our lives, Dr. Axvig and Dr. Dwyer’s mission has been to make their practice extremely safe for their patients so they can continue to provide care for them even during these scary and uncertain times. In their space they have installed five different systems to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and

other viruses to assure all patients are as safe as possible. REME Halo central HVAC air purification system kills viruses with UV light and hydroperoxides continuously throughout the office. Four Surgically Clean Air commercial grade air purifiers with 5 stage HEPA filtration and UV light sterilizes all air 15 times per day. Five high volume vacuum/suction systems remove aerosols produced during treatment in the clinical areas. Two commercial grade ozone generators kill all remaining organisms in the air and on every surface that air contacts every night in the office. On top of all this, Dr Axvig has brought Viral Sign to Bismarck. Once again, he shows his innovative side by being the first in not only North Dakota to have this machine, but the first to install Viral Sign into a medical setting.

for someone looking for a boost on their fitness journey. Sydney Couch, an esthetician at Kharma Vida, was able to try out Emsculpt for herself. Her results can be seen in the pictures featured here. Sydney felt toned and strong after her sessions and found ab workouts to be easier. “People focus too much on the visual results, but more importantly it gives you a nice strong core which is really important to the overall health of the body,” says Sydney. “I’d rather do this than workout.”

Instant Tone Story: Maria Fleck

Are you a new mother hoping to regain some of your core strength? Are you looking for a boost on your journey to fitness? Or are you simply trying to get toned before summer months of swimsuits and crop tops? Kharma Vida can help anyone looking for these kinds of results with their Emsculpt machine. Emsculpt is a non-invasive, painless device that penetrates past tissue into your muscles, contracting them in order to burn fat and build muscle. Many new mothers have used Emsculpt to help them rebuild muscle in their core after giving birth.

BEFORE

34

Emsculpt targets specific parts of your body and helps tone your abs, glutes, triceps, biceps, or calves. Most clients do 30 minute sessions four separate times within two weeks, with results typically appearing 3 months later. No down time is needed after these sessions.

Everyone’s results vary depending on different lifestyles and body types. Consultations at Kharma Vida are free and the best way to find out if you are a good candidate for Emsculpt. “Now is the time to do it,” Sydney suggests, “so by the time spring and summer roll around, you have those results.”

Within one session there are three cycles, and the final one breaks up any built up lactic acid ensuring you are not sore the next day. This means you don’t have to miss any of your workouts, making Emsculpt a great tool

A picture is just a moment in time This is our second year in the Bismarck Magazine. As I sat down to write this article, I spread all of last year’s articles out on a desk. Then something came to mind … The topics change from month to month, but our picture has remained the same. It’s nice, because we don’t age! But are we really the same people we were when that picture was taken? A lot has happened in the last year. Pictures capture us at a specific moment in time. And then we change. You may have put a plan in place for retirement or college planning. Maybe you have a business succession plan or an estate plan. Or maybe you’re already retired. These plans captured you and your goals at a moment in time. Do they still apply to who you are today? Planning isn’t a one-time event. It’s an ongoing process. It starts with a conversation and continues as a conversation. If you haven’t reviewed your plans recently, give us a call. We are interested in hearing what changes have occurred in your life in the last year. It’s important to know who you were at that moment in time. We are also curious to know how you would like your next picture to look.

Goals are personal. Your financial plan should be too.
