Happy New Year! The new year is always an exciting time, it feels different than the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. The beginning of the year always feels like a clean slate, a fresh start. We know we all start out the year with lofty goals like losing weight, drinking more water, reading more books, or saving more money. Our New Year’s resolutions seem to be more self-focused rather than focusing on others. This year we want to challenge you to add to your list something for someone else. Rather than focusing on ourselves this year let’s focus on others and how we can make a bigger difference in our community. Let’s open our hearts and give back! Giving Hearts Day is just around the corner. Thursday, February 10th is the 15th annual Giving Hearts Day, an entire 24-hour period of giving. This day is not only about giving monetarily, but also about giving our time and our talents. Be sure to flip to the center of the magazine and read the Giving Hearts Day mini magazine to learn more about how you can give in all ways. Not only is Bismarck Magazine going to challenge you to give this year, but how about making this a year of trying new things? Lea Black has photographed and put together recipes from all around the world by those who live right next door. How cool is that?! Let’s try something new this year, go outside our box and make this year about trying new things!

• Digital kitchen scale • Parchment paper • Baking sheet • Brush • Cooling rack Ingredients that we will need as follows: • 420 g of King Arthur All-Purpose Flour • 170-227 g of water, lukewarm • 28 g of butter at room temp • 1 large egg • 50 g of sugar • 1 teaspoon salt • 9 g of instant yeast • 43 g of butter, melted • 1 large egg white with 2 tablespoons cold water • Sesame seeds 1. We will begin by making our dough. Combine the flour, water, room temp butter, egg, sugar, salt, and yeast together into our stand mixer bowl. Start with the least amount of water and add more so you have a soft, supple dough. Allow this dough to rise at room temperature until it has doubled in size, roughly 1-2 hours. 2. Once the dough has doubled in bulk, gently deflate the dough and divide into 8 pieces, roughly 100 g per piece. To make slider buns, make 16 pieces that are roughly 50 g each. 3. Shape each piece of dough into a ball BISMARCK-MAGAZINE.COM

by rolling it between your hands, then flatten it and place it on your baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and then cover and let the dough rise for an additional hour. 4. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. 5. Use the melted butter and brush over the dough prior to putting it into the oven. To have your seeds stick to the buns, brush them with the egg white mixture and then sprinkle the sesame seeds on top of them. Bake your buns for 15 to 18 minutes until the tops of the buns are golden. 6. Remove the pan from the oven and use some of the remaining melted butter and gently brush it onto the tops of the buns being very careful to not knock off the sesame seeds. Cool the buns on the cooling rack prior to slicing, and then enjoy!!
