WELCOME TO CONTINUING EDUCATION

Did you know that Bismarck State College is home to the Southwest Region of the TrainND workforce training program? TrainND is the state’s most comprehensive and inclusive workforce training network in North Dakota. Designed with the goal to expand opportunities by training employees to achieve more for themselves and their employers, TrainND serves the state through four service regions managed by local colleges in the North Dakota University System. Together the four regions of TrainND work to reduce barriers to workforce training by connecting local and statewide business and industry, as well as government and nonprofit organizations, with innovative and relevant training curriculum and instructors.

TrainND Southwest is powered by the staff and faculty of Bismarck State College, serving both large and small communities in and around the Bismarck, Mandan, and Dickinson regions. The Southwest region provides custom, contract training for organizations seeking to upskill or reskill employees to meet an ever-changing economy through corporate, industry, and career pathway training programs. Our programs cover areas such as commercial class A driving, manager and leadership development, and healthcarerelated career training. TrainND Southwest also offers individual training opportunities through open enrollment professional development classes and online self-paced courses available on demand. Welcome to the world of 3D printing, where designs on your computer become physical objects. In this handson course, you’ll learn how to design for and use a 3D printer—and leave with a few custom items to show for it. Beginner Woodcarving

Learn the basics of woodcarving, and carving-knife safety with members of the Flickertail Woodcarvers carving club. These classes will teach specific techniques to get you started on your journey of carving. Whether you are interested in pursuing chip carving, relief work, caricature, or realism – it all starts here. Practice your push cuts, sweep cuts, and v-cuts. Observe grain directions and learn about different types of wood used in carving. Be inspired by historical or modern designs, to carve your own creations! Crochet 101

It is time to discover crochet! In this class, you will learn the foundation of crochet from the chain to the double crochet stitch. Participants will learn how to chain, the single, half-double, and double crochet stitches by creating motifs that can be used as coasters or blanket squares. No prior crochet experience is needed - just patience and determination to have fun while learning! Participants will need the following supplies for class: 1 skein of Paton’s classic wool (or any worsted weight wool), one H or I crochet hook (5mm or 5.5mm), scissors, tape measure, and a blunt tip needle with a large eye (tapestry needle).

NEW! Crochet a Baby Octopus

Learn the basics of amigurumi crochet and how to crochet in a spiral using just one stitch. You will create a tactile toy, an octopus, the perfect gift or donation to a local hospital NICU. For this class, it would be helpful to be familiar with the single crochet stitch and chain stitch but it is not required as the instructor will guide participants in both types. The following supplies will be needed for class: a safety pin or stitch marker, scissors, tape measure, yarn needle, and a small amount of poly-fil or polyester stuffing – about 2-3 hands full. If you are making a NICU donation, you will need a 3.25 mm OR 2.75 mm crochet hook, 1 skein of or worsted weight cotton (recommend Hobby Lobby I Love This Cotton). If you are making it for a gift, you will need a 4 mm to 6 mm size crochet hook and at least 4-8 oz worsted weight cotton or acrylic yarn.

Pysanky-Amazing Ukrainian Eggs

Are you ready to take your Easteregg decoration to the next level? This all-ages class teaches the basics of coloring Ukrainian pysanka eggs. The process uses melted wax to control which areas of the egg are dyed, allowing for complex patterns and intricate drawings. We will use a variety of traditional methods and materials, including homemade dyes. This class is a great way for grown-ups to bring home a new activity for kids—just in time for Easter! Beginning Guitar

Now offering a beginner guitar class!

You will have fun while learning all the basics during this 12-week class designed for the beginning student. It is not necessary to have any previous music experience. We will learn individual notes to a variety of chords and songs in different keys. Lost Civilizations and Cities

This class will begin with discussing verified sunken continents and microcontinents, including Zealandia, Mauritia, and The Kerguelen Plateau. Some of the earliest lost locations will be discussed such as The Lost Empire of the Indus Valley, Gulf of Cambay, and Truk Island, Micronesia. Then, we will cover mythical, legendary, or fabled places such as Atlantis, El Dorado, and Pompeii/Herculaneum. Country Folk and City Slickers: The Virtuous and the Venal

In this behind-the-scenes tour at the ND Heritage Center & State Museum, you will get a first-person glimpse into the past. Specifically, we will learn about both paleontology and archaeology, and how these two closely related scientific fields of study have different and distinct goals, despite also having similarities. Join us to learn about how a paleontologist studies fossils to understand the forms of life that existed millions of years ago, and an archaeologist studies human artifacts and remains to understand human life and history. This tour has limited spots and will require walking and standing for the one and a half hour tour.

Popular culture portrayals of the rural and the urban are often situated as “them vs. us.” In this session, we will discuss this binary of city and country, including some of the ways in which rural people are portrayed that make them look hopelessly backward yet virtuous and how urban people are portrayed in ways that make them look clever but somehow morally corrupt. The agrarian ideal of hard work and clean living is still alive and well in our culture, but it is often placed in direct contrast with the urban ideal of wealth and culture. The discussion will include video excerpts from popular television shows and films, along with material from critics and scholars who have weighed in on this “great divide” between the rural and the urban, especially in the US.

Various techniques have been developed over the centuries by leaders as well as followers who have used physical and mental cruelty as a means of forcing people to submit to the will of other individuals. Torture has been used by mankind from the beginning of our existence until our present-day world. Kings, Queens, Presidents, Dictators, Chieftains, and Generals have at one time or another contributed to the development and use of terror tactics to reach a level of control over individuals. Torture has been used during both times of war and times of peace and has become sophisticated over the ages. Not for the faint of heart, this topic may be painful, but the class won’t be.

The Fabulous Fifties was a decade of fun, fads, fears, and fallout shelters. A decade filled with events that still shape America. A time of duck-andcover drills in case of an atomic attack and even fears of communists amongst us. Also, the decade that Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat and witnessed the beginning activism of a young Martin Luther King, Jr. leading the Birmingham bus boycott. America entered the space race after the launch of Sputnik in 1957, the first man-made object in space, a satellite launched by the Soviets. It was also the decade that brought us coonskins hats: the hula hoop, Barbie dolls, Tupperware, drive-in theaters, and I Love Lucy followed by the age of westerns. The fifties also witnessed the start of rock and roll, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, and of course the king, Elvis Presley.

The Red Scare, a Time of Fear and Accusations

The Red Scare was a time of fear and hysteria; a time of accusations

and blacklisting. The second Red Scare ocurred after WWII — a time of fear-mongering that would shape politics and society. It brought to power politicians who made their reputation for being hard on communists, including Richard Nixon and Joe McCarthy, among others. The government used the House Un-American Activities Committee to question the loyalty of thousands of Americans, not only in Washington and Hollywood but in academia and everyday life. The Red Scare was brought into our homes, live on television, the charges that the Army itself harbored communists in the Army-McCarthy hearings.
