How effective is online market research?

By Curt Cherewayko

M

arket researchers are finding social media, the Internet overall and new digital technologies to be necessary tools. Yet opinions vary on how often they should be used and on their effectiveness in gathering market data. On one side: companies like Vancouver-based Vision Critical Communications Inc., which reported an increase of 36 per cent in annual revenue in 2010 from fully embracing new data-collection methods like online survey panels. On the other: companies that use digital, web and social-media tools more cautiously. These include British Columbia’s second-largest marketresearch firm by employee count, the Mustel Group, which still trusts randomized telephone surveys and focus groups. In March 2011, Vision Critical created its 500th online community panel. Each

member of the company’s panels has been recruited to provide, as needed, an opinion about a particular brand. Vision Critical’s customers, which include such major brands as Banana Republic, NASCAR and Quiksilver Inc., can interact with other members of their own respective community panels any time through highly engaging, visually stimulating online surveys. With an average response rate of 51 per cent, the company says these panels easily outperform more traditional research methods. Each panel can have anywhere from 5,000 to 15,000 members, recruited through warranty cards, email, websites, banner ads and retail points-of-sale. Reid says that Vision Critical’s panel platform allows businesses nimbly to maintain ongoing conversations with consumers rather than simply analyzing data from the past to speculate about what to do in the future. While fewer than two per cent of Vision Critical’s thousands of panel members respond to web surveys through mobile devices,. • Adpages SOURCE BOOK 2012—9

Lessons from advertising on social media

hen Twitter decided to launch paid advertisements in its conversation streams last year, it turned to Vancouver’s HootSuite Media, Inc. for help. HootSuite was the first third-party application to syndicate Twitter ads, a recognition of just how popular HootSuite had become with people and businesses requiring a more robust product to schedule, manage and monitor their Twitter-based brands and personae. Paid advertisements, or promoted tweets, constitute Twitter’s key commercialization play. As such, they were a hot topic when launched through Twitter’s own site in April 2010 and then through HootSuite in October 2010. Experimenting with new ways of monetizing your web product after consumers have enjoyed years of adfree or subscription-free service can be disruptive. HootSuite had to respond to various levels of criticism from some users for hosting promoted tweets. “We had some people saying this [was] the downfall of Rome,” recalls Ryan Holmes, HootSuite’s president. He likens the negative reaction from some users to the initial response to Google’s launch of its AdSense product, which bloggers can use to receive shares of revenue from ads on their websites. “A lot of people said that it would be the end of blogging,” says Holmes of AdSense. “Ultimately, it provides a great way for websites to earn money.

It created a whole new economy and a ton more blogging content.” Holmes says the keys to getting web users to accept your new product are responding to negative feedback head-on and continually refining your product to speak to people. For example, one of the criticisms that HootSuite received was that the ads appearing in users’ Twitter streams didn’t resonate with or have relevance to them. Users of HootSuite’s premium, paid versions can choose not to receive promoted tweets. The fact that the percentage of HootSuite’s paid customers opting out of the ads is negligible signals to Holmes that Twitter serves relevant ads that users value. “Its algorithm is getting pretty sophisticated,” says Holmes. “It’s targeting the right content at the right people.” HootSuite receives a share of revenue from the promoted tweets it syndicates, and Holmes notes that the vast majority of feedback about promoted tweets was positive, so he is eager to keep HootSuite involved with the initiative. HootSuite is four months into its own commercialization program. In a so-called “freemium” subscription model, the company has begun offering two paid, premium versions of its Twitter client in addition to its original free version. Roughly three per cent of HootSuite’s users are paid subscribers. With positive cash flow, more than Adpages SOURCE BOOK 2012—11

Thomas Stringham, president and creative director, Hot Tomali Communications: maintain a dialoque rather than pitch products

1.5 million users and 75 Fortune 100 brands among its paying subscribers, HootSuite is in the top five Twitter applications. “There [haven’t] been a lot of products that have done this migration from free to pay and done it in a way that doesn’t alienate their loyal fans,” says Holmes. HootSuite has also incorporated Facebook and LinkedIn to become more of a social-media dashboard than a Twitter client. “Our big goal was to add more functionality in the paid product, as opposed to taking away things that our free users were used to,” says Holmes. “And we were always transparent about the fact that at some point we were going to head toward this paid model.” Thomas Stringham, president and creative director of Vancouver’s Hot Tomali Communications Inc. observes that “these platforms cost a lot of money to develop and maintain” and that “the owners of those platforms have a right to generate some kind of revenue from them.” 12—Adpages SOURCE BOOK 2012

Yet he adds that Twitter has to keep in mind its free ecosystem when positioning its promoted tweets. “Twitter is successful because people can get in there easily and because there is so much information,” he says. “If Twitter started becoming fully a paid service, I think it would just dry up.” Twitter hasn’t made its promoted tweets fully available to all businesses yet, and few Canadian companies are advertising through the beta program. Stringham notes, however, that blatant promotion can work through Twitter, where marketers tend to use a more conversational tone or maintain ongoing dialogue with customers rather than pitching products. Stringham’s clients promote contests and other calls to action. He says it’s not so much about whether the tweet is paid for or not as it is about the offering or the message contained within the tweet: “If the promotion you’re offering is enticing enough, people will act on it.” •
