NEW LAYAR TECHNOLOGY BRINGS PRINT ADS TO LIFE

B

eginning with this edition, Adpages offers a fresh reading experience with the inclusion of “augmented reality” technology, which lets you scan selected articles or advertisements with your smartphone or tablet and watch as the printed page comes to life with additional digital content. Layar technology, which embeds invisible codes onto printed materials (articles or advertisements), allows Apple iPhone and iPad and Android users to scan specially created pages using a free app. To experience Layar for yourself within the pages of this magazine, simply follow these steps: 1 Download the free Layar app by visiting www.layar.com. 2 Hover your phone or tablet over a page or image in this magazine that features the Layar “cloud” logo. 3 Tap the “scan” button to reveal enhanced content. 4 Move to another page and repeat. This augmented-reality technology is provided to our advertisers, too. Adpages ads featuring the Layar logo can be scanned to reveal additional content about the product or service being advertised, directing readers to websites, promotional videos or online stores seamlessly. The information provided by Layar can even be updated after Adpages is published. This new technology is inexpensive for advertisers but makes their messages much more powerful by allowing readers to engage with print ads. Best of all, Layar provides precise tracking of how many people have read and responded to an advertisement. Download the free Layar app and join us in a new digital dimension today. É

BUILDING YOUR COMPANY’S SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGY

Connect with your customers better and create value through social media

BY CYRI JONES AND IVAN SURJANOVIC

W

e answer some of the most common questions from businesses about social media marketing.

Do I really need a social media strategy? If your target group extensively uses the Internet to buy products related to your business, search for solutions or just communicate online, you need a social media strategy. I’m terrified by lack of control and afraid that a few unhappy customers can present a substantial risk for my company’s reputation. What do I do? Of course you want to control your marketing. Keep in mind, however, that your customers will communicate online whether you join them or not; by using your own social media platform you can channel and control their

| 11

communication about your business better and address their concerns more quickly, perhaps even turning once-unsatisfied customers to the most loyal ones while demonstrating to other clients that you care. Where do I start when planning my social media strategy? First check out what your competitors are doing; they may have already discovered intelligent ways to leverage the power of social media. Then learn more about your customers’ online behaviour: how do they communicate online? What social media platforms do they use most? Finally, think about how to connect with your clients better and create value through social media. What types of social media should I use for my business? Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Flickr, LinkedIn and Google Plus – there are many types of social media to choose from. In terms of where your customers are, Facebook and Twitter may be a good start. We recommend using both to gain access to more people. What are the dos and don’ts of social media marketing? Do: ■know your social marketing objectives; ■plan enough time and effort to succeed in your social media marketing strategy; ■monitor your social media regularly and stay on top of all communication; and ■hire someone in your company and/or in an outside agency to spend a specified number of hours on social media each week. Don’t: ■try to do too much at once: focus on your most important social media platforms first; ■forget to track your success regularly (e.g., number of likes, followers, etc.); ■neglect to engage in online conversation with your customers; and ■just use social media to send one-way messages to your customers. Create a buzz by personally responding to all customers’ questions, concerns and requests. HOW TO RUN SUCCESSFUL EMAIL MARKETING CAMPAIGNS

BY CYRI JONES AND IVAN SURJANOVIC

Email is still the ultimate sales tool to help you sell

E

mail marketing can be very cost efficient and extremely targeted, customizable and measurable. Still, many organizations don’t use the potential of this tool at all. Today, for some reason, people tend to give too much time and attention to social media while neglecting the power of email. While social media is a great branding tool to help create desired image and interest (“pull” factor), an email is still the ultimate sales tool to help you sell (“push”) your products. You want to leverage social media to draw people to your website; from there, you want your website visitors to sign up for your email newsletter to further engage and ultimately lead to a sale. If not part of a bigger marketing strategy, social media (especially ads) can have a very low return on investment. Better to think of social media as your online PR, while email marketing is your Internet sales force and customer relationship-management mojo. Email can do many of the marketing tasks associated with walking the customer through the AIDA (attention to interest, desire and, finally, action) communication process. Use it to inform, educate, persuade, remind or ask for an order.

10 SECRETS TO SUCCESSFUL EMAIL MARKETING 1

Consider email an essential part of your overall marketing strategy. Develop an email marketing blueprint that outlines what your objectives are, how you’ll collect email addresses, who you will send messages to (and how often), what type of content/message you’ll send, what technology platform you’ll use and who in your organization will manage your email marketing campaigns. 2 Set goals for your strategy so that, at the end of the month h or year, you can track your progress.

3 Start growing your database of existing and potential customers. Use every opportunity (including a sign-up form on your website) to collect email addresses and gain permission to send email messages. 4 Make sure you comply with the anti-spam regulations of any country you’re doing business in (Canadian regulation can be found at www.fightspam.ca) and consult a legal expert or web professional before starting your campaign. Many countries now require businesses to get consent or have a pre-existing relationship with consumers prior to sending commercial emails. Don’t forget to provide (and act on) an unsubscribe option. Remember to provide your physical business address at the end of your emails. 5 Create your own standard e-newsletter. Make it visually appealing. Give it an attractive name. Add value with tips, insights, facts or news about your products and industry. Educate your customers, build relationships and trust – and always remind them to try your products. Send your e-newsletter regularly. 6 Make your subject lines as informative and appealing as possible. This component is probably the most important part of an email. Subject lines help recipients identify each email they get and entice them to open it, much like a headline in a newspaper. Consistency will help you to build familiarity and trust.

Make M ake k sure you comply omply with the anti-spam regulations of any country you’re doing business in

14 | ADPAGES 2013 PUBLISHED BY BUSINESS IN VANCOUVER

Campaigns Using a reputable email service can also significantly increase the percentage of emails that make it through antispam filters

7

While using your own program can serve the needs of a small to medium business at the start, we strongly recommend using a web email marketing service that will help you create an e-newsletter template, expand your contact lists, send hundreds of messages and track your campaigns. Using a reputable service can also significantly increase the percentage of emails that make it through anti-spam filters. It’s also important to stick with whatever reputable email service provider you pick – each time you switch providers you need to re-ask your subscribers to opt-in, which usually leads to huge attrition rates. 8 Personalize your email campaigns with personal greetings. Customize your emails to various customer groups. 9 Provide a call to action in each email campaign, be it to sign up for more services, get something for free or buy your products. 10 Celebrate when you achieve your goals. Not only does this let the world know your business is succeeding and help encourage new subscribers to come on board, it will make you feel good about your efforts. More on management Avoid inundating your customers’ inboxes with emails – your clients will either unsubscribe or stop paying attention to your messages. Sending one e-newsletter a week or a few times a month is probably the best approach. Make sure that every message you send is worth your customers’ time. To improve in the future, make sure to test almost all elements of your email marketing campaigns, from the subject line to the visual template, the content and any incentives you’re offering. Continually optimize your email campaigns by tracking open rates, click-throughs, bounces and transaction conversions. Email marketing is part of good customer relationship management. Web email services have given the practice of email marketing a facelift, making it easier than ever to benefit from the fundamental concepts of customer relationships. Branding

YOU’RE A PERFECTLY FINE COMPANY – SO WHY DON’T I LIKE YOU?

BY DAVID ANTHONY CHILDS

H

ave you ever had to choose between two products that were a l most identica l? What made you pick one over the other? Assume that a potential client has seen your advertising and is comparing you to one of your competitors. How can you tighten up your brand and company to ensure that they choose you?

Branding

Every element of your brand contributes to the experience

Have you heard or said any of these statements: I have a feeling about these guys; everything seems to be in order; this just feels right. As a brand strategist, this is my business. This isn’t about capturing an audience through advertising or marketing – rather, it’s about creating a brand experience that inspires a particular feeling. Imagine that every element of your company has an ✖ (bad) or a ✔ (good) on it: shop space, offices, website, letterhead, packaging, storekeeper, salesperson, car, watch, business card … everything. As a customer experiences your brand (website, advertising, store visit, staff interaction, etc.) those red xs and green checkmarks will act like a subconscious scorecard. If you score below your competitor, you’ve lost a customer. So what creates that positive or negative feeling about a company, product, service or person? Often, it isn’t the obvious but, rather, a gut feeling. This is why I leave nothing to chance when detailing a client’s company and brand. I don’t want my client to lose business after failing a “gut check” because of a minor item like cheap business card stock or a messy waiting room. Remember: every element of your brand contributes to the experience. Be picky and critical about your brand. While you should never cut corners, if there’s something you can improve quickly, do it. A few places to start looking: ■your website: do you have “under construction” pages with cute animations of someone digging a hole? Delete them; ■your print materials: maybe you moved a year ago and corrected your address with stickers or whiteout? Print new ones and recycle the old; and ■your office: get rid of the dusty plastic plants. We’ve all given business to companies with red xs on their score sheets, but those businesses don’t often earn their customers’ loyalty. Just like finance is about money, branding is about feelings. Be a smart competitor: make your company “feel” like the right choice. É David Anthony Childs is the founder of strategic branding and communication agency Living Blueprint, which helps clients discover their company’s core value and use appropriate forms of media in an orchestrated marketing campaign designed to forge an emotional connection with their audience. MARKETING IN B.C.: WHAT’S HOT AND WHAT’S NOT?

BY RICHARD SANDOR

I

was recently involved in a joint BCAIM-Ipsos Reid initiative that looked at marketing opportunities and challenges as defined by marketers in British Columbia. My job was to examine the state of marketing in Canada and other parts of the world to see whether we’re really all that different in B.C. I then hosted a panel discussion at a BCAIM luncheon with a few senior marketers. Here are some of the key findings – plus commentary – from this work. Digital media, including social and mobile, is red hot Like marketers the world over, we in B.C. are enthralled with digital media and the many possibilities it can bring. Upping their digital game is a key mandate for most organizations and, as a result, marketing departments are adding digital talent and new skills to their ranks. Despite marketers’ frustrations in measuring the impact

and ROI of social media, they’re not shying away from it. Social media and mobile marketing are the hot focus areas for marketers in the coming year, with company budgets for such initiatives being carved out from more traditional media. We also found that social media was extremely influential within the industry itself. The top source for marketing information, news and trends: Linkedin.

Areas of concern for marketers in B.C. The big ones here were: ■fragmentation of media and media channels; ■increased overall advertising message exposure to consumers; and ■decreased ability of companies to distinguish or differentiate their products or services. To overcome these challenges, I suggest really defining and understanding your target group and truly knowing what solution your product or service is providing. When you do this, fragmentation of media and message clutter is a blessing and an opportunity because you can focus your targeted message to a well-defined target group – and your message of your differentiated product will stand out. Homegrown brands that B.C. marketers admire The top brands mentioned were Lululemon, Telus and Coast Capital Savings. These weren’t a surprise to me; I know that Telus is held up as a textbook case study for brand consistency. And Lululemon – what’s not to love? It’s a local brand that’s gone from grassroots to global with little to no paid media (at least in Canada). Coast Capital Savings is seen as unique, memorable and fun not only in its marketing but, just as importantly, in the customer experience. Consistency. Grassroots/community connection. Being unique – and carrying this through to customer experience. Do these well and you, too, will be admired by marketers – and, more importantly, your customers. Brand experience is critical Customer experience and new products or services were the top strategy focus areas for marketers in B.C. This mirrors what I’ve seen in other market reports.

| 19

Marketing in more progressive organizations has influence beyond the traditional departmental boundaries. For instance, marketing will have say in messages relating to customer care, sales, human resources, NPD, pricing and more. With all the consumer insight that marketing already owns, this expanded influence makes sense. Good marketers know that marketing is not confined to the marketing department. And while marketing would love to have complete control of the brand, it doesn’t. Often, it’s someone far removed from marketing who makes an impression (good or bad), which in turn is posted by a customer on Twitter, YouTube, Facebook or Google, where it has the opportunity to potentially influence others. B.C. not so hot on analytics What stood out for me in comparing the state of marketing in B.C. with elsewhere in the world was that analytics in this province seem to take a back seat. With the growing digital channels, including social and mobile, the fragmentation of media overall and the expanding role of marketing beyond traditional marketing responsibilities, there’s more data than ever out there. This data stream needs to be understood so that it can inform and optimize marketing efforts. Elsewhere in the world big data is seen as key. It’s a huge challenge and opportunity for marketers. From the B.C. survey and my own experience, marketers and their organizations, both small and large, could benefit from more focus here. Can B.C. talent overcome small budgets? It’s no secret that the budgets for marketers in B.C. are typically smaller than those enjoyed in HQ central, Toronto and the U.S., where there is greater scalability to marketing investments. That being said, B.C. is such a desirable place to live that there’s an abundance of marketing talent here. Someone once told me there are two types of marketing currency: ideas and money. As marketing budgets in B.C. are tight, those in this province are just going to have to draw more upon talent and ideas to connect with customers. All in all, it’s a great time to be a marketer in B.C. É Richard Sandor, the founder of Eustress Marketing Coaching, offers insights on such issues as brand, strategy, communications, budgeting and business structure. Originally published in Business in Vancouver, March 4, 2013.

Good marketers know that marketing is not confined to the marketing department

1 Are you Forest Stewardship Council certified? 2 Do you have an environmental policy? 3 Have you implemented an environmental management system? 4 Do you use harmful isopropyl alcohol in the pressroom? 5 How do you engage your employees in sustainability? 6 What types of materials do you recycle? 7 Are you tracking carbon emission? If so, do you have a mitigation strategy? 8 What environmental performance indicators are you tracking? 9 Does your company generate hazardous waste? If so, how is it disposed of? 10 What measures have been taken to reduce volatile organic compounds in your process? If your printer can’t answer these questions, ask yourself why not? THE BUCK SLIP IS DEAD! LONG LIVE THE BUCK SLIP!

BY JOHN HALL

A

h, the humble buck slip. A five-by-seven piece of the thinnest, lightest paper available, designed to up-sell, create urgency and inch the audience closer toward a sale. One of the last deliverables to check off during campaign execution, the buck slip is typically the territory of account coordinators and junior creatives. What possible relevance could this most analog of analog tactics possess in a digital world? After all, we’ve completely changed how we communicate, gather information and shop for goods and services. While the buck slip’s days may be numbered, a lot can be learned from this time-tested metaphor for the

| 23

relationship we have with our customers. “Hello dear customer, here is your bill. Thank you for your business. And, hey, while we’ve got you, maybe you’d like to take advantage of this special-friend price on a new product extension we just introduced.” If you think about it, the buck slip is one of the oldest, most basic forms of relevant dialogue: a reminder that advertising’s never really been about creating artful, one-off, award-seeking, visually driven ads with tiny, illegible logos jammed into the bottom right-hand corner, sans call to action. Rather, we are (always have been) in the business of creating a moment that influences an individual’s opinion or behaviour. Perhaps today’s expanding array of digital touchpoints is really just the addition of more tools to help us do what we’ve done all along: create an interconnected series of messages that work together to produce a flow and depth of information. But one thing has definitely changed. At MacLaren we’ve spent a lot of time evolving our “connections planning” process to create the pathway to purchase. No longer are we directing cattle-like consumers into a rudimentary funnel. Instead, we’re accompanying people on a decision-making journey that begins with a truth and ends in advocacy. It can be a bit of a circuitous route at times. There are no more linear blocking charts. And one thing has become abundantly clear: this approach requires a co-ordinated, 100% integrated effort between strategy, technology, media and creative. That’s the only way that every television spot, display banner, social post, event, contest, coupon and yes, even every buck slip, will contribute to your business. É John Hall is senior vice-president and director of media innovation at MacLaren McCann in Vancouver. If you’re interested in this kind of stuff, give him a shout at 604.601.8555 or email john.hall@maclaren.com.
