FYI 6

Pre 1800s:

1883:

1901:

Enjoying the lush landscape and abundant wildlife and food sources, the Kutenai (part of the Ktunaxa) First Nation were the original inhabitants of the Valley area.

Landing in a marshy, watery area, the first European settlers arrived. Also, William Baillie-Grohman drained the Creston Flats of water, creating fertile agricultural spaces.

Imported all the way from Ontario, the first apple trees were planted. Today their descendents bear the delicious fruit of the Creston Valley’s famous orchards.

Agritourism Adventures The Creston Valley is affectionately known as the “agritourism capital” of the Kootenays, and with a variety of farm markets, farm tours, greenhouses, u-pick operations, gift shops, and farm entertainment destinations, it’s easy to see why. Indulge in fresh fruits and vegetables from spring until fall, and don’t forget to take home some famous cherries and asparagus. Hot spots include the Skimmerhorn Winery and Vineyard, Kootenay Alpine Cheese Company, local farmers’ markets and fruit stands in town and all along the East Shore. It’s a foodie’s paradise! See page 30, stop in at the Creston Visitor Centre (121 Northwest Boulevard, Creston | 250.428.4342) and visit crestonvalleyfarmersmarket.ca to learn more.

Did you know? The two large grain elevators in downtown Creston are some of the last remaining in all of Canada! creston.museum.bc.ca The Creston Museum You’ll wind your way around a lot of corners on your journey through local history at the vibrant Creston Museum and there’s something exciting to see around every one of them! With two large buildings, exhibits indoors and out, and interesting artifacts in every available space, there’s nowhere else quite like it. Be sure to check out the Museum’s great summer events, programming and exhibitions (page 8) and plan to visit their stellar gift shop and lovely picnic area. A fabulous way to spend the whole day! 219 Devon Street, Creston | 250.428.9262 | creston.museum.bc.ca (Map 4, A6) Photo: Creston Museum

The Lake itself is one of the largest in BC and also has access to the world’s longest free ferry ride! (Schedule page 26) With beautiful mountainous shores, local artists and artisan shops nearby, amazing food and beverage (fresh and local, of course!), and some of the cleanest water around, there’s plenty to keep you going all year long. Definitely a relaxing destination. kootenaylake.bc.ca (Map 2)

The First Annual Kootenay Lake Agricultural Fall Fair takes place. 2011 is the Fair’s 100th birthday!

The first of Creston’s two grain elevators was built. Find them today, outside the Creston Visitor Centre at 121 Northwest Blvd!

The Kootenay Pass along Highway 3 is completed. At 1774m (5820 feet) it’s still the tallest highway summit in BC today!

With a healthy population of about 10,000 residents, the Creston Valley is a thriving agricultural community with a vibrant arts scene.

n the presence of the Creston Valley’s beauty, one can’t help but be inspired. This is definitely true for all the artists and artisans hard at work in the area.

With such grace and majesty at their doorsteps, artists are drawn to the area, and often set up shops right in town, where you can see them at work and purchase their wares. For a special treat, take a tour of participating businesses, shops, galleries and more during the Annual Creston Valley & East Shore ArtWalk, every summer from June to September (see page 8). Visit the Creston Museum to discover the area’s history and where its future is headed. With two buildings, exhibits indoors and out, and artifacts in every available space, there’s always something to do here! Don’t miss the model railway and the delightful little red schoolhouse. Between stops in downtown Creston, be sure to take part in a self-guided “Mural Wall Tour.” Started by a local artist over 30 years ago, the idea was to express different facets of life and history in Creston, and today represents the city’s commitment to the arts community.

aturally stunning and peacefully serene, the Creston Valley makes a great spot for a quiet vacation. But don’t let the tranquility fool you: there’s plenty of heartracing activity here!

Wetlands & Wildlife The Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area (CVWMA) is a rich and biologically diverse area. Over 300 species of birds, 57 species of mammals and 29 species of fish, reptiles and amphibians call the area home. Many of these are species at risk: endangered, threatened, vulnerable or considered of special concern at a provincial and/or federal level. The CVWMA is internationally recognized as a wetland of importance (Ramsar site). It consists of 17,000 acres of wetland habitat, part of a valuable chain of wetlands from the Arctic Ocean to California. The wetland is also recognized nationally as an Important Bird Area and is a major destination for migrating tundra swans, greater whitefronted geese and a vast array of waterfowl. Marvel at the 6 species of grebes, great blue herons and the rare Forster’s terns – which breed nowhere else in BC. Keep a lookout for moose, elk and the rare Coeur d’Alene salamander. Explore Kootenay Lake Spanning more than 140km (87 miles) in length, Kootenay Lake is BC’s third-largest natural lake, and one of the prettiest! It’s the perfect spot for outdoor activity all year and great for relaxing vacations. Check out these picturesque East Shore communities to discover local talent, natural beauty and genuine hospitality. (Map 1,2,7,8) kootenaylake.bc.ca

Wynndel: This charming town was the site of the first strawberry co-operative in 1912, but today it’s famous for awesome “pick-your-own-fruit” roadside farm stalls and gorgeous vistas of Kootenay Lake merging with the Creston Valley. Postcard worthy photo opps? You bet!

Sirdar: One-of-a-kind local artwork and handicrafts await you in Sirdar’s historic, family-run General Store, in addition to stellar bass fishing and serene bird watching at nearby Duck Lake. Motorized crafts are prohibited on Duck Lake making it perfect for canoeing, kayaking and moonlit swims. Locals especially love winter ice fishing here.

Crawford Bay: Home to dozens of artists’ studios where you can see blacksmiths, potters, glass-blowers and decorative broom-makers live in action, this is an artist’s mecca! Of course, the area also boasts the world-class championship Kokanee Springs Golf Resort, for some “après-art” exercise.

Riondel: Head north past Kootenay Bay to find this tranquil village and the beautiful Yasodhara Ashram. Take a peaceful tour of the Ashram or stroll around the quaint city streets. Zen indeed.

While growing fruits and vegetables in the Creston Valley since 1912, our family built this market almost 50 years ago. Committed to having a very small environmental footprint, we were the first Canadian producers certified by the European Union’s Good Agricultural Practices program, GobalGAP, in 2004. Our season begins in early spring with bedding plants, along with a range of fruits and vegetables. Our own local product starts with Sutcliff Farms Asparagus in May and our own fresh Strawberries (picked or U-pick) in June. Peaches, Apricots, Apples, Plums, Raspberries and a host of vegetables are here for your enjoyment. Cherries are a specialty of ours—we have been supplying late Creston Cherries to companies like Marks & Spencer and Whole Foods world-wide for a number of years. Stop by and taste what we have worked hard to grow for you. Open Daily April–November, Dawn to Dusk | 3016 Hwy #3 (1 mile east of Creston) | 250.428.4983
