Lift the

Children

19,000 children die in Africa every day! Lift the Children is addressing this tragedy by building and

supporting non-denominational Christian-based orphanages. The children we help have no family to turn to, no place to go. They are lonely, sick, without hope - they are desperate. They are hungry, abandoned, dying. They have no bed to sleep in, no earthly comforts, only dirty, ragged clothing. They are the poorest among the poor. We provide safe, caring homes for these children. We nurture and educate them to become self-sufficient. We prepare them for life’s challenges, so that they can contribute to the development of their country and the betterment of our world.

This is our Passion!

We currently support 51 orphanages.

Have you ever considered:

‘Why isn’t more being done for these children?’ Please take this opportunity to make a difference!

Lift the Children is unique! Your entire donation reduces the children’s suffering.

All administration costs such as wages, rent, travel, and fundraising, are paid for by the John Volken Foundation.

Therefore:

100% - yes, every single penny - of your contribution goes directly to lift children from sorrow and despair to happiness and hope.

Supporting these children today makes for a better world tomorrow. Please send your gift to: Lift the Children 6911 King George Blvd. Surrey, BC Canada V3W 5A1 All donations are tax deductible. Tax receipts are issued for donations of $25 or more. Lift the Children is registered with the government of Canada under Charities Reg. No. 80569 0690 RR0001.

Michael’s Story

Welcome Home I couldn’t make enough money

is a successful, residential addiction treatment program for men and women between the ages of 18 - 40. Every aspect of the program is personalized for your particular capabilities and needs.

IT WORKS! International Accreditation

to support my drug habit. So I started making money the ‘easy way’, dealing and stealing. I ended up in jail. I lost my job, I lost my house, I lost my family. I felt there was nothing to live for. There was only more time in jail and there were ‘programs’. Nothing helped. Living was hell. I wanted to die. Welcome Home stopped the downward spiral. Getting back was not easy, in fact it was a struggle, but I made it. My two children now have a Dad. I have so much to look forward to. . . Welcome Home has given me my life back.

Hundreds of testimonials like this are on file. For its methods and success in addiction treatment, the Welcome Home program has been accredited by CARF. CARF is the leading international accreditation authority for addiction rehabilitation programs.

Endorsement by CARF is much more than a certificate on the wall. Acceditation is only awarded to the very few drug and alchohol addiction recovery programs Commission on Accreditation that consistantly provide effective solutions of Rehabilitation Facilities and achieve superior results.

Welcome Home

does much more than help you overcome your addiction. Our comprehensive program is balanced between addiction recovery, personal development, and career preparation - all essential for life-long sobriety.

Your Recovery Is Paid For! Thanks to donations from businesses, friends, “All that we ask from you and the John Volken Foundation, Welcome is your total committment Home covers the entire to change”. cost of your recovery.

Royal Columbian Hospital 604-520-4438 www.rchfoundation.com

“The Multipurpose Interventional Suite will be used for a range of life-saving clinical services, including cardiac care, medical imaging, neurosurgical diagnosis and treatment of aneurysms and stroke,” says Dr. William Siu, Director of Medical Imaging, RCH.

A BRIEF HISTORY Royal Columbian Hospital (RCH), the first operating hospital in British Columbia, opened in 1862 with 30 beds for men only. Today, this hospital serves one in three British Columbians – men, women, children and babies – and receives more patients by air ambulance than any other hospital in the province. In 2012, RCH will celebrate 150 years of excellence! A VIEW TO THE FUTURE CENTRES OF EXCELLENCE RCH is a Fraser Health provincial centre and regional referral hospital providing specialized care for trauma, cardiac services, neurosciences and neonatal intensive care for 1.6 million seriously ill and injured people from across the province. RCH is also a UBC teaching hospital with a Clinical Academic Campus. RAISING FUNDS Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation (RCHF) is a provincial and regional independent charitable foundation that raises millions of dollars annually to help fund priority equipment needs, facility enhancements, research, education and innovation at RCH. For more information about Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation, visit www.rchfoundation.com or contact us at 604-520-4438.

Giving Guide 2012

Royal Columbian Hospital lies at the heart of the fastest-growing health authority in B.C., Fraser Health. The number of people aged 50 to 79, those most likely to need cardiac and neurological services, is growing by 20% every year. Plans are underway to redevelop and expand the Royal Columbian Hospital site, but this expansion will take several years, and something needs to be done immediately to relieve the strain. RCH is building a new multipurpose suite that will accommodate hundreds more critical cardiac and stroke-related patients a year, as well as other life saving procedures. “At Philips Healthcare we believe in supporting health-care professionals by placing the best tools possible in the hands of highly trained physicians and nurses so that they can continue to provide superior care to their patients,” says Phil Freiberger, account manager, Philips Healthcare. RCHF would like to thank Wesgroup Properties, Thrifty Foods, Tim and Karen Delesalle and the Delesalle Family, RBC Foundation, the McLean Foundation, TB Bank Group and the Lohn Foundation for stepping up to support our campaign to help RCH provide greater care for heart, stroke and aneurysm patients at RCH. Every seven minutes in Canada, someone dies from heart disease or stroke.

“RCH gave me hope that Carol would not only survive, but now, almost a year later, is close to 100% better. It just proves to me that our healthcare system and Royal Columbian Hospital has only the very best doctors and health-care personnel. We need to provide them with the best infrastructure we can.” – Ron Gayle, fiancé of Carol Thorpe who suffered a hemorrhagic stroke

To date, we have raised $2.0 million dollars toward our goal of $2.8 million and toward saving many more lives. Please give now. 604520-4438 or www.rchfoundation.com

ĄIncrease our fundraising returns by 20 per cent so we can recruit more mentors and provide enhanced training and development opportunities for those we have. ĄExpand and enrich the range of our community partnerships with the aim of sourcing new publicity for the benefits of mentoring, finding new targets for volunteer recruiting and attracting gifts in kind that will create opportunities for mentors to provide enriched community experiences.

Giving Guide 2012

GIVING OPPORTUNITY Give This Kid a Start Support the KidStart Mentoring Program Help us provide a kid like her with a volunteer mentor – a caring adult who helps vulnerable children and youth develop the abilities they need to keep themselves on the right track.

WHO WE ARE KidStart is an initiative of PLEA Community Services Society of BC. PLEA specializes in programs tailored to address the full spectrum of problems encountered by children, youth, adults and families who face significant challenges trying to lead constructive lives as part of the community. www.kidstart.ca

The kids are referred by family members, school counsellors, community workers, police, social workers and probation officers. Mentors are recruited from the community and paired with a young person of the same gender. They get together at least once a week and gradually develop a relationship while riding bikes, hanging out, going to games and movies, reading, playing sports... all the everyday activities that help kids thrive and connect. It costs $2,500 a year to provide a mentor compared with $215,000* a year to keep a kid in custody. A mentor cannot only be viewed as a bargain, but a really good investment. * Kids, Crime & Care, Mary Ellen TurpelLafond, February 2009, p.5

Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver ReStores: A major revenue source, ReStores sell new and used building materials to the public at 50% to 80% off retail. Proceeds from sales support 100% of Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver’s administration costs, allowing all other donations, grants and sponsorships to go toward the cost of building homes.

Corporate In-kind Giving: Suppliers, manufacturers and retailers supply our ReStores with products for sale and products for constructing our homes. Corporate Sponsorships/Cause Marketing: A great way to give back through a Corporate Social Responsibility and/or marketing initiative.
