ASSOCIATION MESSAGES

ILEA CANADA | MOVING TO THE NEXT LEVEL At the International L ive Events Association (ILEA) we talk about #MyILEA moments. What it means to each of us to be a part of a professional association cultivated specifically for those in the event industry. MyILEA moment came when I was pursuing a

designation to help me move to the next level within the industry. The certified special event professional (CSEP) designation was perfect for me. It demonstrated my proficiency as an event professional, showed my competency level of industry standards a nd pra c t ic e s, h elp e d m e get the next great role and acknowledged high calibre

work. I fou nd my “fa m i ly” at the monthly ILEA meetings. I very quickly became a regular attendee and, in just a few short months, joined the Edmonton chapter board. I am returning this year for a second term as president and cannot wait to meet you at our award-winning education and programming events. Not a member yet? Not to

worry, ILEA offers general admission for all our events. Want to learn more about the membership advantage? Send me an email at ringmasterevents@hotmail.com. I would be happy to talk to you about everything ILEA has to offer. Jody Paulson, president, Edmonton chapter, International Live Events Association

MPI EDMONTON | WE’RE PART OF SOMETHING BIG Hello from t h e M e e ting Places International (MPI) Greater Edmonton chapter. MPI is not only the largest association for event professionals in Alberta; we’re the largest in the world. So I’m not exaggerating when I say “we’re

PCMA | TAKE TIME TO RECHARGE Greetings to everyone from the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) Canada West Chapter. As I write this, the summer is ending and the busy season for our industry is underway. W h i le we a re juggl i ng

deadlines, business trips and back-to-back events, let’s always remind ourselves of the importance of recharging. Recharging is not just about going on vacation. Listen to a short meditation session in the morning; take a five- to10-minute walk after lunch; unplug a few minutes in the evening. Recharging is about building daily habits that can

help us retain energy, calm and motivation. Recha rg i ng is a lso about spending time to learn new things. The business event industry changes dramatically almost daily, and it is a constant struggle for event professionals to keep up with the latest trends or threats. Professional associations like PCMA are here to assist you

with that. Make a commitment this year to build a new habit of attending at least one local event, to connect with your colleagues and community. I hope to see you at the next event. Shawn Cheng, president, Canada, West Chapter Professional Convention Management Association

EDMONTON GOES

BOLD

New Stanley A. Milner Library sparks debate as Alberta’s capital continues to create meeting places that define a contemporary city

ANDREA COX

E

dmonton has embarked on a downtown architectural transformation that has ignited debate, challenged perceptions and created some of the most dynamic meeting places in Canada.

The modern era began in 2010 with the Art Gallery of Alberta, designed by Randall Stout. Its angular form was juxtaposed by a 190-metre flowing steel ribbon inspired by Alberta’s northern environment. It was followed by the much-anticipated ICE District and new Rogers Arena, developed by Katz Group, and the Royal Alberta Museum that opened last year. Also opened in 2019, the JW Marriott Edmonton in the heart of the ICE District is the second-tallest building in the city, the first luxury hotel built downtown in decades, with space geared towards contemporary conferences and meetings. The Marriott features 10 event rooms, nearly 16,000 square feet of total event space and 13 breakout-meeting rooms. Its largest space can accommodate 936 delegates, and the new $500 million hotel

00_MPAB 2020_32.indd 6

is walking distance to the Edmonton Convention Centre and the Citadel Theatre. Yet it is the renovation of the Stanley A. Milner pubic library that has grabbed attention as it angles towards its unveiling in February 2020. “The built environment is both a reflection of people’s spirit and a source of inspiration,” says Stephen Teeple, principal at the Toronto-based firm Teeple Architects and lead designer on the Milner library refresh. Teeple describes the design vision behind the renewed space as “connecting the library to the city.” The renovation will add space for audio recording and playing games, offer cooking classes in a 2,000-square-foot centre and introduce a space for hosting Indigenous ceremonies and other events.

Edmonton’s first Quidditch Canada National Championship will be held March 28-29 at the University of Alberta • QUIDDITCH CANADA

Its cutting-edge design, however, ignited a flurry of social media debate, with some saying it resembled a spaceship; others, that it evoked a military tank. Some critics focused on the cost: the original budget for the renovations was $62.5 million, but the cost increased to nearly $85 million when structual problems surfaced in the 52year old building. Teeple and the Edmonton mayor both urge citizens to await the opening. “Criticism is a sport here in Edmonton and so people indulge, but I’m going to wait until it’s done and especially until people get inside before passing final judgment,” Mayor Don Iveson told reporters. The new library will have greater square footage, expanded meeting spaces and advanced digital and community resources. “The renewal is about more than a building, it’s about a space where people can connect,

00_MPAB 2019_32.indd 7

learn, belong and thrive,” says Pilar Martinez, chief executive officer at the Edmonton Public Library. Martinez says that the new exterior design is certainly striking and lends a futuristic look and feel to the former brutalist architecture. “It’s reflective of a modern library,” she says. In addition to a strong sense of architectural flow in the interior spaces – the multi-storey glass and steel atrium flows up and through the expanse of the library, visually connecting the spaces – key connections from the interior to the exterior public domain are carved with ample glazing: there are 650 windows, including five skylights in the refurbished six-storey structure. “The new library will create opportunities for social interaction in a dynamic, sculptural setting – it will be an enriching spatial experience that unfolds as one moves through it,” explains Teeple. É

BIGGEST EVENTS IN EDMONTON 2020 More than 3,200 delegates are expected in Edmonton this October for the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress, expected to be the largest conference event in the city in 2020. But it is quirky sport spectacles that could draw the greatest number of visitors, according to Explore Edmonton. These include Edmonton’s first Quidditch Canada National Championship (if you have to ask, talk to your grandchildren) March 28-29 at the University of Alberta. In April, also for the first time, the city will host the National Dodgeball Championships, an event expected to draw 300 athletes and hundreds of supporters from across the country.

NEW HOTELS MEET HIGH DEMAND Fancy new hotels and meeting places arrive in the nick of time for bustling and welcoming Calgary FRANK O’BRIEN

00_MPAB 2019_32.indd 8

Designed with a British influence, the hotel will feature a main-floor restaurant, conference facilities, a fitness facility and a top-floor restaurant-lounge with an outdoor patio. “We can help do more than get this city back on its feet; we can help it rise to even greater heights,” says PBA CEO Patricia Phillips. The $100 million hotel will employ more than 150 people, providing an envious level of service. The Dorian joins the Residence Inn by Marriott, a 35-storey, 90-room hotel that opened last year on 10th Avenue at 5th Street by Atlific Hotels. Designed for the corporate group market, the new Marriott has 6,000 square feet of meeting space with built-in multimedia technology that can welcome up to 175 delegates. Meeting rooms of various sizes on the conference level of the hotel can be used for lunches, breakout sessions and intimate discussions. The fresh accommodation will be needed this year in Calgary, which is becoming a major conference and event destination, says David Woodward, executive director of Meetings and Conventions Calgary. This June, the giant Global Petroleum Show 2020 is among the largest events, with an estimated 53,000 attendees, representatives from 22,500 companies and more than 1,000 exhibitors at Stampede Park June 9-11. Of course the famous Calgary Stampede is an annual highlight and will held July 3-12, 2020. Last year posted a record-snapping Stampede attendance of more than 1.27 million, and this year promises to be even bigger and better, organizers say. Woodward manages a team of 12 responsible for persuading organizations to hold their larger meetings and conventions in this city.

Two of his sales staff cover the U.S. market, two concentrate on Canada and another specializes in international organizations. Each year, overnight visitors contribute about $2 billion to local businesses, Woodward notes, and it takes long-range planning to keep visitors coming. An example is the Rotary International Convention that is expected to draw more than 30,000 delegates from 100 countries in 2025. The Rotarians will need plenty of hotel rooms, but by then a planned 650-room hotel on the Stampede grounds will be open, part of a massive redevelopment of the iconic site. 2020 EVENTS

There are many exciting events booked for early 2020 that should keep Calgary’s new hotels hopping. These include a high-performance “arts rodeo” in January, billed as Canada’s largest international festival of the arts. The Chinese New Year Festival in late January will light up Calgary’s Chinatown with live performances and fireworks. Calgary’s Chinese Cultural Centre is the largest facility of its kind in North America. Winefest in February promises “as many samples of wine as you can drink” and will be hosted in venues across the city. The Classic IV show-jumping competition will be held February 23-24 at Spruce Meadows, the internationally recognized equestrian event space, and visitors can watch from the indoor comfort of the Spruce Meadows Equi-Plex. And, as in all years, this final event of the show-jumping season has free admission and free parking. É

HOW THE WEST ONCE WAS While there are many new sights and venues in Calgary, a perennial favourite is the Heritage Park Historical Village, where visitors can see and feel the past come to life before their eyes. This park’s unique attractions and exhibits span western Canadian history from the 1860s to the 1950s. Visitors will see the story of the settlement of the West not only preserved but presented live with costumed actors and authentic buildings and experiences. With more than 180 exhibits on 127 acres of land – and a paddlewheel boat for river tours – Canada’s largest living history museum offers an unforgettable experience. Stroll the historical village and vist the entire park grounds, open from the spring to October 15.

How to use Meeting Places’ region-by-region directories of venues and services MEETING PLACES AT A GLANCE Q If you’re looking for details of specific venues, start with “Meeting places at a glance,” below. First check the Alberta map on page 14 to confirm which region your event is in, then browse the listings under that region.

Welcome to the meeting planners’ resource section of Meeting Places, including directories of all the resources you’ll need for planning meetings, conferences, conventions and trade shows throughout Alberta. Start by using the colour-coded map of Alberta on page 14 to identify the region of your intended event. Then use the two main sections of the Meeting Places resource guide: “Meeting places at a glance,” which offers details of meeting venues in each region; and regional directories, which guide you to all the services you’ll need wherever you are holding your event.

CALGARY: A CITY IN TUNE

Studio Bell and a remake of the BMO Centre usher in a new era for conferences and meetings in Alberta’s biggest and most youthful city

ANDREA COX

C

algary is a city in transition and in tune, evolving to meet a fresh identity, one that embraces its entrepreneurial spirit and builds upon it, putting less emphasis on the energy industry and more on the arts, sports and economics sectors that often include sustainable, environmental or green components.

With a young population (the median age is 36.9 years), Canada’s sunniest city has garnered all sorts of accolades from the world’s fifth-ranked Ultimate Sports City and Canada’s top multi-year ranking as one of the five most livable cities in the world by the Economist Intelligence Unit. It’s a city of choice for the world’s most innovative entrepreneurs. The pulse and vibrancy of this urban centre combined with an ideal location in the eastern foothills of Canada’s Rocky Mountains make it a top destination for corporate

events and meetings. And what better place to host than in one of the city’s most innovative and significant artistic venues? Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre, one of 15 or so buildings that define the city as a powerhouse of innovative architecture, houses the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio where big-name greats like Led Zepplin, Deep Purple, Fleetwood Mac and the studio’s namesake – the Rolling Stones – recorded classic albums. It offers a collection of meeting rooms and

event spaces designed by architect Brad Cloepfil. Here one can screen a film, dance the night away or host a private cocktail reception. The rooftop amenity terrace at the King Eddy, the adjacent hotel, features jaw-dropping views of downtown and the Stampede grounds and an up-close look at the architecture of Studio Bell. “The National Music Centre is a central part in Calgary’s transformation as an emerging hub for music in Canada,” says Cynthia Klaassen, the National Music Centre’s senior manager of business development. “Studio Bell is a completely unique building with fabulous architecture inspired by musical instruments and the surrounding Canadian landscape. We have the ability to host corporate town halls for 250 people to special receptions for up to 1,200 guests. Because we are a music museum and live performance space, if an event has a live component then we have all of the in-house expertise to facilitate that.” For those looking for some adrenalin pumping activities, WinSport, the site of the first Canadian Winter Olympics in 1988, features a myriad of meeting, dining and team-building opportunities that can be uniquely designed to incorporate many of the facility’s top-notch offerings. Whoosh down a zip line at 140 kilometres per hour, test out a bobsled or navigate through the ropes course and finish up the day with cocktails and dinner in the award-winning on-site restaurant.

Adding to the meeting spaces pool, Calgary is expanding and breathing new life into veteran spaces. Take, for example, Victoria Park and the Stampede Grounds, a 30-acre (12-hectare) refresh project spearheaded by the city’s development arm, Calgary Municipal Land Corp., and the Calgary Stampede. The redo, dubbed the Rivers District Master Plan, will establish a culture and entertainment district and include residential densification, plenty of upscale and local shopping, a new sports arena and expanded conference facilities, starting with the BMO Centre. The refresh, designed by S2 Architecture, will double the BMO Centre space to more than one million square feet. Just down the road from Victoria Park, Fort Calgary, established in 1875 at the confluence of the Elbow and Bow rivers by the NorthWest Mounted Police, is also undergoing an overhaul, one that will uplevel its dated meeting spaces while adding a brand new cultural component. Part of the broader revitalization of The Rivers District Master Plan, Make History is a three-phase design that includes a new 12,750-square-foot museum. Designed by Calgary’s Nyhoff Architecture, it allows for future addition or expansion and will link to Fort Calgary’s Barracks/Business Centre, which will also experience a renovation, creating new meeting spaces for groups eager to re-discover Calgary. EDMONTON & AREA

EDMONTON’S TOP EIGHT There is plenty to do in Edmonton, but here are eight not-to-miss highlights in Alberta’s vibrant capital city

FRANK O’BRIEN

T

he opening of the JW Marriott hotel in Edmonton’s ICE District, the downtown playground, is likely the big news for those planning events in Alberta’s capital city, which is why we place it No. 1 on our list of eight great places to experience in the city.

Now open, the JW Marriott Edmonton ICE District features more than 22,000 square feet of meeting and conference spaces, including downtown Edmonton’s largest ballroom at 10,500 square feet. As befitting a 346-room, 55-storey giant that overlooks Edmonton’s Rogers Place arena, the JW Marriott has named the ballroom after Wayne Gretzky – the world’s greatest hockey player – but nine of the hotel’s meeting spaces are also named after Edmonton Oiler hockey legends, including Mark Messier, Paul Coffey, Glenn Anderson, Kevin Lowe, Grant Fuhr and Al Hamilton. Your next conference may be hosted at the JW Marriott,

00_MPAB 2019_32.indd 19

one of Edmonton’s other fine hotels, or at such venues as the Edmonton Convention Centre, the gigantic Edmonton Expo Centre or the Oasis Centre, which itself can accommodate 1,000 guests, but the city is so packed with sights and delights that you must tear yourself awau for a day of discovery. Our No. 2 stop on the Edmonton tour is the stunning Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA). Designed by Randall Stout, the iconic building was likely inspired by the work of Frank Gehry, who Stout worked with for many years. Stout juxtaposed angular windows against a winding 620-foot-long steel ribbon that references the forms of the North Saskatchewan River and the aurora borealis, which often lights Edmonton’s northern sky.

your skis to the Edmonton conference: the gigantic River Valley Parks system offers a seasonal escape, including cross-country skiing in the winter and golf in the summer • TRAVEL ALBERTA

The 85,000zz-square-foot AGA is a worldclass centre for the presentation of regional, national and international art. It also features the 150-seat Ledcor Theatre and a number of unique meeting spaces. No. 3 is a tour through Edmonton’s thriving craft beer scene. Organized tours for up to 14 tipplers visits five local breweries and tasting rooms, but informal visits are encouraged. Destination No. 4 is to go shopping at the largest mall in North America. With nearly 5.2 million square feet – 114 acres – the West Edmonton Mall boasts more than 800 stores and services. It is home to a golf course, a skating rink, four movie theatres, a massive entertainment complex and its new Asian Village. The mall welcomes 32 million shoppers, and visitors, every year. Our next must-see will take more than a day. No. 5 is the River Valley Parks system, which combines a score of distinct and interconnected parks that together are 22 times larger than Central Park in New York City. A great escape from the nearby city centre, the River Valley Parks feature 11 lakes, golf courses and nature centres. Watch for wildlife: the parks are known as a natrual corridor for deer, moose and other wild critters.

Back in the city, the newly completed Royal Alberta Museum is a must-visit No. 6 on our Edmonton to-do list. At 419,000 square feet, it is the largest museum in Western Canada. The $375 million museum boasts inspiring architecture, more than two million artifacts, and plenty of well-equpped meeting rooms for events large and small. Get funky and fun with our No. 7 recommendation, a visit to Edmonton’s historic Strathcona district. Once Edmonton’s commercial centre, it is now a vibrant entertainment zone with great brew pubs and restaurants, all backdropped by turn-of-the-last-century architecture, including the Canadian Pacific Railway Station and the South Side Post Office. No. 8 on our list is the all-season, all-time celebration in Edmonton, which has long been nicknamed Canada’s Festival City. No matter when you arrive, you will likely find a festival to greet you. From June to July is time for the Works Art & Design Festival. August welcomes the Edmonton International Street Performers Festival. November rolls in with Farmfair International, where visitors can see rodeo action and live livestock auctions – and plan their next visit to Alberta’s non-stop capital city. É

ALBERTA ROCKIES

HIGH IN THE ROCKIES The Alberta Rockies welcomes with sophisticated venues, peak adventures and awe-inspiring beauty

FRANK O’BRIEN

A

visit to Alberta would not be complete without experiencing the Rockies, which includes Lake Louise Ski Resort, third largest in Canada, the après-ski adventures to be found in Banff and the huge selection of accommodation and meeting venues in Canmore.

And the Rockies, if you can believe it, are about to get even better. Last year Parks Canada approved a long-range plan for Lake Louise Ski Resort. Ski hill officials say the plan allows for growth and improved experiences to accommodate up to 9,000 skiers and riders a day, but also includes moving summer use away from grizzly bear habitat and removing about 1,200 acres from the leasehold to improve wildlife habitat and corridors. Meanwhile, there is plenty to experience for anyone lucky enough to attend a conference or meeting high in the Alberta Rockies. In Canmore, the gateway to the Rockies and about a 90-minute drive from Calgary, the Malcolm Hotel opened in 2019 in time to host the annual Highland Games in luxury.

00_MPAB 2019_32.indd 23

With 124 rooms and 8,800 square feet of event space, the Malcolm also has a banquet room that can seat 350, plus six breakout rooms. But Canmore has also thought of budget-conscious travellers, with the recent opening of two hostels, the Canmore Hotel Hostel and the Canmore Downtown Hostel. “Growing up in Alberta, we have fallen in love with this part of the world over the years and want to share the experience with many people from different parts of the world at an affordable price,” says Robby Aurora, owner of the 75-bed Canmore Hotel Hostel, located on Main Street. The hostel includes five private rooms. With rates of $55 or less per night, the Canmore Hotel Hostel offers complimentary linens, blankets, pillows, a private locker, free Wi-Fi, a full-service kitchen and a common area.

The 80-bed Canmore Downtown Hostel has nine dorm rooms with shared and private bathroom options. In Banff, the Fairmont Banff Springs hotel offers a peak Rockies experience with conference and team-building opportunities along with a spa, golf course and a menu of sophisticated restaurants. Banff continues as one of the most sought-after destinations in Canada during the winter, with up to 86 per cent occupancy in the nearly 5,000 hotel rooms available in a resort town nestled in a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Canada’s first national park. The completely renovated Mount Royal Hotel in Banff is also a must-see, and not only because of the breath-catching views from its rooftop patio. At Lake Louise, the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, situated on the lakefront, offers an entire conference wing with more than 36,000 square feet of meeting space for large and small conventions. The Alberta Rockies provides extensive opportunities for team challenges, group exploring or flat-out adventures, including guided trips to the Columbia icefield, helicopter tours, hiking, horseback riding and world-class golf and skiing. MEETING PLACES ALBERTA 2020 PUBLISHED BY BUSINESS IN VANCOUVER

CENTRAL ALBERTA

ACTION CENTRAL

Central Alberta blends Prairie history with warm western hospitality and cosmopolitan meeting venues GEOFF KIRBYSON

G

reg Newton, the director of business development at the Calgary Stampede, would like to see the international meeting and convention business look beyond the traditional sites of Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver (MTV) when making bookings. Instead, he wants his AMTV, as in Alberta. From a Canadian perspective, it’s only fair for larger events to include the West, he says, and that includes Calgary and surrounding Central Alberta. There are 101 hotels in Calgary with some 15,500 rooms, including 2,600 that have been added in the last year, so there is no shortage of meeting places. Ninety minutes to the north, Red Deer’s two biggest hotel properties are also busy with renovations. The Baymont by Wyndham Red Deer added a new 4,800-square-foot ballroom last year as well as a new 75-seat restaurant. Its public space is also being refreshed and the guest rooms are getting new furniture, carpet and paint. Corey King, its assistant general manager, says when the economy turns against you, you’ve got to get creative to get heads on your pillows. “When there are tournaments in Red Deer, we’re contacting groups instead of waiting for them to find us. With curling, we know there are bonspiels all the time so we reach out to every curling club in Alberta so they know when they come to Red Deer, we’re the place to be because we’re less than a block from the rink,” he says. The Cambridge Red Deer Hotel & Conference Centre is only a year into its rebranding from the Sheraton banner. Lisa Francoeur, its director of sales and marketing, said it has recently completed a “soft” renovation in its guest rooms and an upgrade to its public areas. She’s hoping to make a bigger renovation announcement in the not-too-distant future. Because the hotel is an independent property, her staff is eager to showcase the Cambridge’s unique features, including its outdoor patio, two night clubs, two

restaurants and a liquor store, in addition to its 53,000 square feet of meeting space and 241 guest rooms. “We didn’t have a lot of crew or oil and gas business before the downturn. Now we’re going after new [customers] like financial services companies, insurance companies and the cannabis industry,” she says. Red Deer also boasts Westerner Park, the largest convention, trade show and sport facility in Central Alberta, with 4,200 parking spaces and a full-service recreational vehicle park. The park welcomes the sixday Canadian Finals Rodeo this year. Olds College in Olds opens up 450 student-housing units during the summer season for guests to rent. The college also has an 85-room hotel on its campus and even rents out its century-old barn and stables for casual encounters. Olds officials say they welcome conferences at a much lower price than in big-city Alberta. É

SOUTHERN ALBERTA

SOUTHERN DELIGHTS Writing-on-Stone named UNESCO World Heritage Site FRANK O’BRIEN

S

outhern Alberta’s Writingon-Stone Provincial Park was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site last year, the only Canadian site named by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 2019.

It is Alberta’s sixth World Heritage Site, and its first in 24 years. The decision came after UNESCO, which is tasked with preserving the world’s most important cultural sites, added it to its global list last July. Alberta’s other UNESCO sites in Southern Alberta are Dinosaur Provincial Park, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump and Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park on the border with Montana. The designations recognize the “outstanding universal value” of the parks. A refuge of spectacular badlands and hoodoos set amid the prairies of southwestern Alberta, Writing-on-Stone, located near the town of Milk River, has been a hidden gem of Albertans for years. More than 60,000 people visit the provincial park annually to experience its breathtaking landscape and rich history. A sacred place for Indigenous Blackfoot people for around 4,000 years, the site gets its name from the ancient rock art among its sandstone cliffs. Some of the Writing-on-Stone carved petroglyphs and the pictographs date back 2,000 years. There are 138 rock-art carvings depicting sacred people, spirits, battles, journeys and moments. Southern Alberta is more than notable history, however. The city of Lethbridge, an hour’s drive from Writing-onStone, is a progressive city of 93,000 that recently adopted the Blackfoot word “Oki” as its official greeting. The words means “welcome” in English and has become part of the city’s official branding. Lethbridge has a number of meeting venues, from fine hotels and the Lethbridge College campus to its huge Exhibition Park with 30,000 square feet of trade floor space. Heading east, Taber captures the Prairie experience as part of the Alberta badlands. The city has been named among the top 10 friendliest communities in Canada by Expedia and offers a number of community events, including the annual Cornfest in late summer and the Midnight

NORTHERN ALBERTA

BIGGER. BETTER. NORTHERN ALBERTA The saying ‘the bigger, the better’ is certainly true when it comes to Northern Alberta ROB ALEXANDER

T

he land and the sky, along with the rivers, the forests and the lakes, all tend to be bigger in Northern Alberta, as are the travelling distances. Even the municipalities and the national parks are bigger north of Edmonton. The 66,000-square-kilometre (25,000-square-mile) Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is Canada’s second-largest municipality, while Wood Buffalo National Park is the world’s largest national park. And for good measure, the Wood Buffalo municipality can also lay claim to the world’s largest dump truck, Canada’s largest community recreation complex and one of Canada’s biggest hearts. The volunteer rate in Wood Buffalo is twice the Canadian average, while the United Way charity has six times named Fort McMurray the most giving community in Canada. So, what does that mean for conference and convention planners? Well, this is where the “better” part comes in: given that nearly everything is bigger in Northern Alberta, events held in that part of the province are simply better for it. The big sky means the region offers some of the best northernlights viewing in Alberta, while the big land with its equally big forests, rivers and parks provides exceptional outdoor activities and opportunities, and the big distances have created communities with a distinct character, including Fort McMurray, which is readily accessible via daily direct flights from Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto. Along with its big heart, Fort McMurray has a vibrant urban setting, a rich cultural scene and amenities that rival Alberta’s major urban areas, including a range of event venues that

00_MPAB 2019_32.indd 30

include hotel and conference centres, such as the Quality Hotel and & Conference Centre, which offers 12,000 square feet of space, and more intimate locations, such as the Clearwater Suite Hotel, an all-suite hotel with six separate boardrooms. The city also offers other venues, such as the Syncrude Clubhouse at the Syncrude Athletic Par and its two meeting rooms, outdoor patio and 2,000-square-foot atrium. And there is, of course, the centrepiece of Fort McMurray: MacDonald Island Park, the home of Suncor Community Leisure Centre and Shell Place. This enviable complex boasts six ballrooms, seven suites, a club room and a stadium that can seat

up to 15,000 people, along with its recreational facilities. To the south, 2.5 hours northwest of Edmonton, the picturesque town of Slave Lake sits on the southeastern corner of Lesser Slave Lake, Alberta’s largest lak, with its white-sand beaches, exceptional boating and fishing and the largest conference centre in north-central Alberta. The Slave Lake Inn and Conference Centre can accommodate up to 500 guests in the largest of its six rooms. It also offers a tap house, lounge and restaurant. Northwest of Slave Lake, near the confluence of the Peace, Smoky and Heart rivers, Peace River continues to provide access to the north as it has throughout its history. Peace River is home to the Belle Petroleum Centre, the town’s largest conference facility. This facility can host conferences, conventions and trade shows across its five event rooms with the largest capable of hosting 560 guests. Peace River’s Sawridge Inn & Conference Centre, meanwhile, provides 3,000 square feet of conference and event space in six flexible rooms, while the Peace Valley Inns Hotel and Conference Centre has space for parties of up to 70 and 180 people, respectively, in its meeting and banquet rooms. Peace River is also home to some 500 hotel and motel rooms, all-season recreation centred around its rivers, and the award-winning Peace River Museum, Archives and Mackenzie Centre, which was the 2014 recipient of the Robert R. Janes Award for Social Responsibility. É

Hosting a conference worthy of happy face emojis takes a dream team. Yours and ours. We’ll take your vision and turn it into ‘Unforgettable’ for delegates. How? With creative solutions and a roll-up-your-sleeves attitude. You’ll be happy to learn we don’t understand the word no. It’s this attitude that makes Edmonton, Edmonton. Let’s talk.
