Roberts Creek Home to the Sunshine Coast’s oldest golf course, the cosy community of Roberts Creek is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. Summer activities range from mountain biking and hiking to Oceanside walks and family fun at one of many local recreation parks. For the adventurous, there are also great water sports like kayaking, swimming and fishing. In the winter, get ready to strap on some snowshoes or cross-country skis and master the trails at the Dakota Ridge Winter Recreation Area, just minutes from Roberts Creek. Texada Island is discovered by the Spanish and nicknamed “Isla de Texada.”
Thomas William “Will” Roberts brings his family to stake out his claim of land near the waterway that now bears his name: Roberts Creek!
Thanks to its gold, silver, copper and iron mines, Texada Island is the largest urban centre north of San Francisco.
Davis Bay & Wilson Creek Famous for its long beach, Davis Bay features smooth sand bars at low tide and great crab and salmon fishing and windsurfing during high tide. Visitors love the clear view of Vancouver Island, visible from the pebbled coastline, as they stroll along the beach’s paved path or sit peacefully on the shore. Looking for some retail therapy? Then a visit to nearby Wilson Creek should satisfy your craving, whether it’s to purchase a specialty coffee or buy a new car! Wilson Creek is also home to the Chapman Creek Salmon Hatchery, which offers educational tours by donation. Summer brings the annual Davis Bay Sand Sculpture Competition and in winter locals and visitors flock to the frigid waters for the annual Polar Bear Swim. Sechelt Literally the “land between two waters,” Sechelt offers a wide variety of outdoor activities. With Coast Salish roots from the Shishalh Nation, this town is bursting with cultural and recreation opportunities, not to mention the stunning views of Vancouver Island! Adventure-lovers flock to the area for its abundance of year-round activities including some of the best diving in the world, sailing, golf, mountain biking and great winter sports like cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Halfmoon Bay
Pender Harbour Comprised of the seaside villages of Madeira Park, Garden Bay and Irvine’s Landing, part of this collective community’s appeal is its relaxed lifestyle, stemming from its long history of residents happy to live close to the city, but without the “big city” politics. The area is a hub of marine activity, attracting boat enthusiasts and water sport lovers who dubbed it the “Venice of the North” for its maze of waterways. The Patricia Theatre opens its doors in Powell River to entertain locals. Still operating today, its Canada’s longest-running movie theatre!
Harry Roberts (son of Will) paints a sign on the side of his company’s freight shed proclaiming the area as “The Sunshine Belt.” Years later Black Ball Ferries renames it “The Sunshine Coast.”
The Powell River Paper Company mill becomes the world’s largest newsprint supplier, employing 2000 workers and delivering paper worldwide!

This romantic community is a haven for those seeking quiet solace and peaceful getaways. Home to some of the finest outdoor recreation areas, including the Smuggler Cove Provincial Marine Park, Halfmoon Bay is also famous for its share of local artisans and craft-makers. Take part in charming aspects such as the historic General Store with its community gathering spot and delicious ice cream, as well as local galleries, shops and artists’ studios. Skirting along the eastern shore of Ruby Lake, Highway 101 runs north towards Earls Cove. It’s a great spot to take a break and enjoy beaches, wildlife and the diversity of birds found in the wetlands. Visit the Iris Griffith Interpretive Centre to learn more and join a guided nature hike or plan a picnic at the Dan Bosch Regional Park for some excellent swimming and fishing. sunshinecoastcanada.com (Map 9)

Earls Cove & Egmont At the northernmost tip of the Lower Sunshine Coast, you’ll find yourself in Earls Cove ferry landing where just a short distance away is the community of Egmont. Famous with kayakers for its proximity to the Skookumchuck Narrows rapids, Egmont is also the starting point for a cruise up to the 40m (120-foot) high Chatterbox Falls in the Princess Louisa Inlet. Both areas are also popular as entrance points for water sports and boating activities. Saltery Bay More than just a ferry landing, Saltery Bay is a favourite destination for scuba divers, kayakers and day-trippers. Divers love searching these waters for exotic marine life, including the 3m (10-foot) tall bronze mermaid sculpture, submerged 20m (65 feet) below the surface in (appropriately named) Mermaid Cove. Families love to visit for a day or camp overnight in the Saltery Bay Provincial Park, with its ample swimming and boating opportunities and great sunny views. With an official ferry service in operation and a new highway system, Vancouverites quickly begin populating the lucrative Sunshine Coast shores. And they haven’t stopped since!

The Shishalh Nation, original inhabitants of Sechelt, becomes one of the primary First Nations in Canada to function as an independent self-governing body.

Texada Island The largest of the Straight of Georgia islands, Texada is easily accessible from the Powell River ferry and is quickly growing as a safe place to explore the outdoors (there’s no cougars or bears!). Loaded with wilderness trails and marine activities, Texada is a great spot to enjoy stunning, peaceful scenery, year-round! In addition, rock hounds love the area for its geological formations and promises of ever-elusive gold, thanks to the Island’s long mining history. Visiting in summer? Lund marks the beginning of beautiful journeys. Literally! It’s a “Mile 0” marker along the Pacific Coastal Highway system that stretches all the way south through the United States and into South America. But you might not want to ever leave this beautiful Oceanside town. Luckily, you can stay as long as you like, thanks to the variety of overnight options including B&B’s, campgrounds and resorts. Lund is a great place to plan a short getaway or a long vacation and has lots of activity to keep you going, like galleries, boating and water sports, as well as scrumptious seafood and family-oriented festivals. Savary Island Perfect for a day-trip, Savary Island is accessible by water taxi from the mainland at Lund, just north of Powell River. With a beautiful, delicate ecosystem, the island is best explored on foot or bicycle, keeping car traffic to a minimum. But you’ll still get great access to the majestic sandy beaches of this 7.5km (4 mile) long island, complete with some of the warmest waters north of Mexico! If you plan to stay overnight, be sure to book in advance, as there is little public camping, so making reservations with one of the local B&B’s, campsites or cottage rentals is your best bet. savary.ca (Map 15)

The Suncoaster and Sunshine Coast Trails The recently completed Suncoaster Trail extends for 37km (23 miles) from Earls Cove on the Lower Coast, south to Halfmoon Bay. Visitors will love this new trail for its rugged natural setting and multipurpose use. Hikers, bikers, horseback riders and ATVers can easily share this wide, relatively flat trail to enjoy great mountain views close to several communities. The Suncoaster is planned to one day extend all the way south to the Langdale Ferry terminal for a total of 80km (50 miles) of continuous trails. sunshinecoastcanada.com Stretching for 180km (11.8 miles) on the Upper Coast from Saltery Bay to Sarah Point near Desolation Sound Marine Park, the Sunshine Coast Trail offers intimate views of coastal old growth forests. Weaving up and over mountains, hikers have their pick of short day-trips or longer journeys, but it’s estimated to take experienced hikers 10 days to complete the trail end-to-end. There are lots of tenting sites and access to local B&B’s along the way. Highlights include the 13km (8 mile) long, wheelchair-accessible loop at Inland Lake, 360o vistas from Tin Hat Mountain and the magnificent Douglas Fir and Yellow Cedar trees surrounding Elephant Lakes and Mount Troubridge, the highest point (1300m / 4265 feet) on the Trail. Ranging in difficulty, it’s advised to plan ahead and pick up available resources about the Trail (sunshinecoast-trail.com / discoverpowellriver.com).
