Travellers’ Tips Umbrella Etiquette With springtime showers approaching, here are a few handy wet-weather pointers: . > Choose an umbrella that’s large enough to keep you dry but not so big that others can’t move past you easily. > Look both ways before you open your umbrella so that nobody gets poked. Be mindful of people standing or walking nearby. > Sharing an umbrella? The taller person holds it. > When you see others approaching, hold your umbrella higher or tilt it to avoid a collision. > S hake off and close your umbrella before entering a building. Look for an umbrella stand or ask where to set your brolly down. > D on’t give your umbrella its own seat on public transit. Stand it on the floor by your feet, ensuring it’s closed tightly and doesn’t create a tripping hazard. > C arry your closed umbrella vertically, pointy end down. Don’t tuck it under your arm with the end sticking out. Photo: Tourism Vancouver / Robert Kent

Beautiful Blooms
6
With the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival in full swing this April, see if you can spot the following cultivars on Vancouver’s streets: > Afterglow: This American hybrid cherry is characterized by bright-pink flowers, horizontally spreading branches and buds and branches that are more resistant to freezing damage. > Pandora: This English hybrid has a neat crown of upright branches and smallish, soft-pink flowers composed of five narrow, notched petals, suffused deeper pink at the tips. The flowers open flat, showing gaps between the petals. > Pink Perfection: An increasingly uncommon cherry in Vancouver with a small, spreading, umbrella-shaped crown and large, luxurious two-toned flowers – pink with white inner petals. > Snow Goose: Blooms in early April with pure-white flowers backed by bright green calyces. > Ukon: With flowers of an unusual yellowish colour, the name of this cultivar alludes to the fact that turmeric (“ukon” in Japanese) stains whatever it touches yellow.
Sushi Roll Some of the items you’ll likely find on the menus of Vancouver’s many sushi restaurants: > Edamame: Steamed or boiled soybeans served with salt. > Make-sushi: Sushi rolls that include various fillings, usually wrapped in seaweed. > Nigiri-suhi: Hand-formed sushi made with rice and fresh seafood. > Sake: An alcoholic beverage of Japanese origin made from fermented rice. > Sashimi: Very fresh raw meat or fish sliced into thin pieces. > Tempura: Seafood or vegetables that have been battered and deep-fried. > Wasabi: A condiment for sushi that has a very strong flavour.

ith one of the hottest fashion and luxury shopping scenes in Canada, Vancouver is known for its opulent designers and highend brands. Take time to indulge in what locals already know: this city was born to shop. Photo: Olesia Bilkei
Luxury Shopping Vancouver’s growing fashion scene includes retailers that keep their shelves stocked with the latest and greatest designs from local and international brands. And nowhere is that more apparent than in one of the city’s many high-end shopping malls, including Pacific Centre and Sinclair Centre in the heart of the downtown core.
Canada’s own luxury department store, Holt Renfrew, is also located downtown. Or ride the Canada Line SkyTrain to Vancouver’s first-ever shopping centre, Oakridge Centre, and further south to Richmond Centre. Speaking of rapid transit, the Millenium Line will take you directly to B.C.’s largest mall, Metropolis at Metrotown in Burnaby. With so many exciting retailers and destination shopping spots, it’s easy to see why Vancouver’s shopping scene is smoking hot. International brands like Chanel, Gucci, Coach and Louis Vuitton can be found in neighbourhoods like Yaletown, Gastown and Alberni Street. Take your turn in one of these great retailers’ dressing rooms and join Vancouver’s many fashionistas.
South Granville Looking for a unique piece of art, furnishings for your home or the perfect little black dress? Trendy South Granville Street is lined with retailers and galleries to draw out your inner art critic, interior designer and fashionista. Located minutes from downtown Vancouver, this is one neighbourhood that should be on every visitor’s itinerary. southgranville.org (Map 2, C5) Photo: Ariadna de Raadt

xplore the European feel of this hip downtown Vancouver area. Yaletown, which was once a warehouse district dominated by textile shops and train yards, has undergone serious revitalization in recent decades. Today, the 20-block neighbourhood is home to some of the most cutting-edge restaurants and retailers in the city, plus lots of fabulous live entertainment. The place to see and be seen, Yaletown’s charming cobblestone streets invite more foot traffic than vehicles, making it the perfect place to shop till you drop. When you’re ready for refreshment, sit down on one of the local restaurateurs’ spacious sidewalk patios – many of which were once used as loading docks – and indulge in some well-deserved people watching. Celebrity sightings are frequent here, so don’t be surprised if you see stars. yaletowninfo.com (Map 1, F10-G10)

Say Spa
A
spa hot spot, Vancouver serves up a range of treatments that will leave you rested, relaxed and rejuvenated.
Vancouver Spring 2013 | visitorschoice.com
Nearly every one of Vancouver’s neighbourhoods features spas and studios catering to clients with every kind of need. Eco-friendly spas in Kitsilano offer good-for-you services that take Mother Nature into account, too, while a booming yoga scene will help you downward dog your way to wellbeing. If you’re prepping for a big night out, Yaletown’s specialty beauty shops provide niche treatments like lash extensions, brow threading and body waxing. In Fairview, False Creek and Kerrisdale, state-of-theart medical spas take self-care to the next level, with the latest, greatest anti-aging treatments.
CHI, The Spa at Shangri-La draws inspiration from the origins of the Shangri-La legend, a place of personal peace, enchantment and well-being. 1128 West GeorGia street | 604.695.2447 open Daily 9am - 9pm www.shangri-la.com/vancouver chi.vancouver@shangri-la.com

Soothing Spa Trends
Heavenly Hotel Spas Virtually every Vancouver hotel has an on-site spa. The elegant Chi spa at the Shangri-La combines massage and hydrotherapy with relaxation and meditation to assist the body’s natural renewal. Try the West Coast Wave Massage, with deep-flowing movements and customized pressure tailored to your specific needs. And despite drawing Hollywood celebrities, Absolute Spa – at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, downtown’s Century-Plaza Hotel and River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond – gives every guest the star treatment (its Pink Grapefruit Jet Lag Recovery wrap makes a particularly soothing treat for tired travellers). Get Outside!
Whale Watching For a truly exhilarating excursion, whale watching with a local tour provider can’t be beat! Getting close enough to these majestic creatures often starts in the historic fishing village of Steveston (in Richmond) or from downtown Vancouver. Within minutes of either point of departure, you’ll find yourself exploring the Strait of Georgia, Fraser River Delta and Gulf Islands, home to these mighty mammals. You’ll also get a chance to spot harbour seals, sea lions, porpoises and a variety of marine wildlife that call these coastal waters home – don’t miss out on this oncein-a-lifetime experience!

Rent a bike from a downtown shop and exploring Coal Harbour, English Bay and Stanley Park’s 22-kilometre (13.7-mile) seawall, as well as the many new bike lanes that criss-cross the core. You can also lease a speedboat, charter a fishing tour or kayak around False Creek – right from Granville Island – or head uphill via the famous Grouse Grind – a 2.9-kilometre (1.8-mile) trek up Grouse Mountain on the North Shore, which will take you to an elevation of 853 metres (2,800 feet). vancouvertrails.com
