Doukhobor History Many Grand Forks residents are descendants of the Doukhobor Russian immigrants who settled here in the early 1900s. The Doukhobor people believe in pacifism and fled their home country of Russia to avoid religious persecution. Their cultural influence is evident throughout the area from Russian cuisine such as delicious borscht, to historical buildings, museums and attractions. Visit the Hardy Mountain Doukhobor Village, Doukhobor Mill and Fructova School as well as the Boundary Museum, to learn more. Midway becomes the official name of what was once called “Boundary City.”

With new residents arriving almost daily, the Grand Forks population swells to 1,000. Today, about 4,000 citizens call the city home.

Phoenix is hailed as the “highest in elevation” incorporated city in Canada.

Midway is home to five hotels, a stationery shop, sawmill, stagecoach company and is the final stop of the Columbia & Western Railway.

What began as a cottage community, soon develops into a resort and recreation destination as new homes are built on Christina Lake.

Phoenix Ski Hill You’ll love this community-owned ski hill for its laidback atmosphere and excellent pow. With some tough downhill sections, a vertical fall of 244m (800 feet) on 11 runs and a T-bar lift right to the mountaintop, riding at Phoenix Mountain is truly enjoyable. Best of all, this hill has a mild climate, great snow throughout the season, and a north-facing slope that provides excellent late season conditions. All this, and it’s only minutes away from Greenwood and Grand Forks, right in the heart of Boundary Country. Phoenix Road, off Highway 3 | 250.445.6565 | skiphoenix.com (Map 4, D4)

Rock Candy Mountain Collect crystal treasures on Rock Candy Mountain! Take a historical journey with this exciting self-guided tour of three Doukhobor heritage sites in Grand Forks. The Hardy Mountain Doukhobor Village preserves the remains of the original Makortoff Village and is one of the last of nearly 90 communal settlements of its kind. A variety of exhibits and photos detail a pioneering lifestyle. At the Doukhobor Milling Heritage site, you’ll find an authentic 1920s gristmill that still makes additive-free flour and is sold in local specialty stores under the “Pride of the Valley” name. Built in 1929, the Fructova School is a heritage site and home to the Boundary Museum collection. Reflecting the region’s roots, culture and industry, artifacts depict the story of the self-sufficient Doukhobor community. Thousands of years ago the Sinixt First Nations, a branch of the Interior Salish Nation, settled in the area of Christina Lake. Rock walls at several points along the north shore of the Lake exhibit pictographs (rock paintings) that attest to the Sinixt Nation’s long history. The term Boundary Country evolved from the designation of the surrounding region as the Boundary Mining District in the late 1800s. Placer gold, discovered at Rock Creek in 1859, brought the first prospectors to the region, however it wasn’t until the Columbia & Western Railway came to town in 1899, that mining had its real boom in the area. Constructed around this same time was the Phoenix mine near Grand Forks. With 4,000 residents, an opera house, 16 hotels and a brewery, Phoenix was a happening town. To capitalize on the booming mining industry, the Granby Smelting Company built a smelter in Grand Forks in 1900. This massive operation was the first to be built in the district, and in fact was at one time the largest copper smelter in the entire British Empire! The Phoenix mine eventually closed operations in 1919, leaving a ghost town in its wake. During the early 1900s, Doukhobor settlers migrated to the area for its self-sufficient farming potential. The Doukhobors are Russian immigrants who practice a peaceful way of life, and came to Canada to escape religious persecution. The city of Grand Forks thrives today and its agricultural tradition continues with the region’s newly discovered grape-growing potential and booming agritourism.

Bridesville is known as “the end of Smuggler’s Road” and was once a thriving town on the Vancouver, Victoria and Eastern Rail Line with a border crossing into Washington State. Bridesville was also the site of a daring gold robbery, which still entices those with metal detectors to look for missing gold bars. Rent a gold pan and wander down the trails to the creek, where remnants of an old gold mine can be seen. (Map 2, G1)

harming and welcoming, the meandering main street of Greenwood tells a tale of history and culture with heritage buildings, vibrant new businesses, local parks and beautifully-maintained homes. Situated between Grand Forks and Midway, Greenwood in the 1890s was a booming centre of mining, smelters and railroads. Today, remnants of the glory days remain, along with all the services of a big city, on a friendlier, casual scale. Check out the Greenwood Museum and Visitor Information Centre to learn more about Canada’s “Smallest City!” 214 South Cooper Avenue | 250.445.6355 | greenwoodmuseum.com

It’s All Here! There is something for everyone here, whether you’re looking for a “citified” espresso, historical experiences or outdoor adventure. Greenwood has you covered, and they do it all with a friendly smile. Take the self-guided Greenwood Heritage Walk to fully appreciate the 1890s / early 1900s homes that speak volumes about the community’s days as the hub of regional mining. Greenwood’s arts community provides several festivals, fairs and annual events such as the Demolition Derby, art shows, craft fair, soapbox derby, and the Founders’ Day celebrations (see page 10). Keep a lookout for the colourfully decorated Tunnel of Flags just outside of town, along Highway 3 towards Grand Forks. See if you can name all 200 flags on this 1913-built tunnel!

Natural Beauty Picture it: glimmering blue summer fish-stocked lakes, blooming springtime fields of wild flowers, and sparkling winters with gleaming white snow. Greenwood’s mild climate is perfect for a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, skiing and fishing in nearby Jewel Lake. With deer, rabbits and a variety of birds, Jewel Lake is famed for its legendary world-record rainbow trout catch, weighing in at 23 kg (52lbs), with a length of 1.08m (42.5 inches). The Lake is also a great spot for winter ice fishing. Also check out historic Boundary Falls, once the site of a mining town, smelter and a hydroelectric dam. Remnants of the past can still be seen by this stunning waterfall, accessed via the Trans Canada Trail along Highway 3.

ock Creek’s beginnings, like many of the communities in the Boundary Country, can be traced back to the glory days of gold rushes and mining activity. The discovery of gold in 1859 sparked the biggest gold rush in the history of the province of British Columbia, with over 5000 miners panning the creeks and tributaries in the Rock Creek area. After the initial mining boom, Rock Creek residents began to develop an economy in agriculture, lumber and ranching. Today, some of the finest blue ribbon livestock in BC are raised in Rock Creek and the surrounding area.

The Fall Fair For over 60 years, the Rock Creek and Boundary Fair has brought families together at the “Biggest Little Country Fair Around”. This two day event, happening September 17-18, 2011 features everything from heavy horse shows and lawnmower races, to agricultural and baking displays, plus thrilling carnival rides for kids of all ages. An Agricultural History Surrounded by farms and orchards, Grand Forks is an agricultural town with a tradition that dates to the late 1800s when a few settlers came to the “Sunshine Valley” to take advantage of the fertile land. Mining spurred rapid growth and demand for agricultural production to feed the workers and new residents of the town. The tradition was bolstered in 1909 with the arrival of the Doukhobors, Russian pacifists, who settled in communal farming villages, planting orchards in abundance: apples, pears, Italian prunes, cherries, currants, gooseberries, raspberries and more! With so many orchards, the valley was named Fructova, meaning “fruit of the valley.”
