PROFESSION

flight dispatch and operations

For decades, the position of a Flight Dispatcher or Flight Operations Control Officer has been considered as one of the most exciting jobs in the airline industry. The job is dynamic and challenging. It entails responsibility and requires decision making qualities. These qualities help to define the profession of a Flight Dispatcher and the environment in Operations Control Centres where they work.

A Flight Dispatcher needs to analyse all these factors to ensure that every flight is dispatched as safely and as efficiently as possible. He/she would also need to liaise with cockpit crew, engineering staff, company representatives overseas and air traffic control centres. Moreover he/she becomes an extremely important point of contact especially in non-normal situations. A sound foundation and proper training of Flight Dispatchers is one of the key elements in the success of any airline.

SO WHAT DOES A FLIGHT DISPATCHER DO? Weather forecasts enroute and at destination, availability of navigational aids and equipment, airport facilities, aircraft technical status, aircraft performance, fuel uplifts, on-time-performance and crew flight time limitations are amongst some of the most important factors that affect each and every flight in today’s competitive aviation world.

“Flight Dispatchers are an airline’s secret to success in operations”
