Letter from the Editor
M A G A Z I N E SHARING THE MIRACLE OF SUCCESS
Editor in Chief Ariel Topf
Dear Readers, We are coming to America - Who Do You Know??? One of the key elements for success in business is to maintain a constant flow of leads. Many people tell me in desperation, “I’ve contacted everyone I know,” or, “I’ve run out of leads.” Most people never realize how many people they know until they commit their names to paper. This “name game” is a requirement in many industries. Sales people are often asked to write the names of everyone they know and every person who would recognize them if they called them up on the phone saying, “Hi, this is Sarah Lewis from…” At this stage, do not consider need, interest or affordability. Do not write address or phone numbers. Just list names of anyone and everyone you can think of. Use your Shul list, your school class list, your children’s class list or even your wedding invitation list to get those names flowing. The index of the yellow pages is an extraordinary tool to help jog your memory. Start with the letter “A,” and go category by category: Accountants – who do you know who is an accountant? Who do you know who works in an accounting office? Who do you know who is good with numbers? Who do you owe money to? If you do this task conscientiously with each listed category, you will have hundreds of names before you finish with the very first letter. This is not a quick exercise. You must devote hours and even days to this important task. Although most of the people you note down will not be interested in your product or service, they will be an endless source of leads. Get into the habit of NEVER ending a call or meeting without asking for three to five referrals. Committing to this process and learning to get referrals from every prospect is one of the best investments you can do for your business. Now it’s my turn to “walk the talk.” Bizness Magazine is coming to America! We are looking for a local partner in each city boasting a large Jewish population. This partner must be an energetic, responsible and charismatic sales professional who can relate to other professionals and small business owners. So, WHO DO YOU KNOW? Do you have a parent, a sibling, a relative or a friend who could work with us to build a great local business? (I hear Bizness Magazine is offering a significant finder’s fee for any lead that turns into a partner!) I look forward to receiving your referrals! Ariel Topf ariel@biznesssmag.com Ariel has built several companies on three continents in the fields of internet, retail, wholesale, franchising, direct sales, high-tech, employment, food manufacturing, food supplements, clothing manufacturing, pet nutrition, personal development, restaurants, advertising and publishing. In this process, Ariel has headhunted, hired, trained and managed over 20,000 individuals.

PSYCHOLOGIST
Ask Dr. Genstil: Parenting Q&A By Dr. Sara Genstil
Since 1983, Dr. Sara Genstil, Ph.D., has been practicing psychology using the Intersubjective Systems Theory. She uses this treatment modality for individuals with various conditions, such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, post-trauma and for family issues and parenting skills. Dr. Genstil is available to see individuals, couples and families. In addition, she treats bereaved families through the Ministry of Defense and terror victims through National Insurance (Bituach Leumi). She also works with organizations on how to strengthen ties with employees. Dr. Genstil is a member of the International Association for Psychoanalytic Self Psychology (IAPSP). After completion of her Ph.D., Dr. Genstil did a postdoctorate with Robert Stolorow, Ph.D., the global leading authority in Intersubjective Systems Theory. Over the years, Dr. Stolorow became her supervisor and mentor. She has practiced for many years, both in the US and in Israel.
My third grader is B”H very smart. When the teacher explains a new pasuk in Chumash, he understands it right away. The problem is that the teacher needs to go over and over what was learned in order for the whole class to understand. At that point in time, my son is bored and starts disrupting the class by talking with his neighbors. I understand this is a problem that teachers often face as every classroom has so many different kinds of learners. But when we suggested to the teacher perhaps giving our son something extra to do in the meantime, he didn’t like the idea. My son is still complaining that he is bored and the disruption is still going on. What can we do? This is an example of a question that is not for a psychologist. Your son doesn’t necessarily have a problem. He’s very smart and needs more stimulation. The educational system must respond to each child’s individual needs. If there are slow learners, there are special classes for them. What does the school offer for gifted children? Your son needs more stimulation, deeper thinking, and he’s not receiving it. He can’t be blamed for interrupting the class because he’s bored. I recommend that you speak to the principal or mifakeach to see what can be done for your son. 8

FEBRUARY 2017
My four-year-old son has been successfully toilet trained for over a year. For about the last three months, he has been having trouble staying dry, both during the day and at night. Although he is not having full-blown accidents, he is constantly wet. We went to the doctor to rule out any physical problem. What else can it be and how can we help him? First of all, it’s important to know that, developmentally, children go through phases. They move a few steps forward, then one step back. It’s not constantly going upward. If your child is regressing, it’s part of his development and that’s normal. As he’s only four years old, there is no reason to be alarmed by his regression. Your function as parents is to be with your child while he’s regressing. Be responsive to him when he’s going forward, but also be responsive to him when he’s going backwards. Be with your child, wherever he is developmentally. Good parenting is not to say, “Hey, you’re a big boy! You shouldn’t do that.” If the parent becomes tense and starts to doubt, saying, “What’s going on? What’s the problem?” he/she will begin to radiate tension and this will relay a message to the child that there’s something wrong. But there is nothing wrong. This response creates a situation where the child says to himself, “Hey, my parent is not accepting me,” and good parenting means to accept your child—not only in good times, but in every aspect, in every developmental experience. Be with your child wherever he is. That is good parenting. When he’s ready, he’ll snap out it. Now, that’s in a normal situation. However, it could be that he’s been traumatized by something. Very often, for example, when a new baby is born, it is a very difficult emotional experience for the older child. “Oh! I’m not the baby anymore. Somebody took my place.” Children feel subconsciously that if they behave like the baby, they will get their place back. So very often they regress and that’s normal. Parents should simply comfort their child who is regressing, as this may be a result of external reasons. Perhaps one of the parents went away for an extended period of time or something else happened that is traumatic for the child. The natural response is to regress, to go to an earlier state. When under stress, people of all ages do regress. So whether it is for external or internal reasons, be with your child. Comfort him and even give him extra love. Tell him, “I’m here. I love you just the way you are, as always.” The key point is for the parents to be serene, quiet and peaceful. Act towards your child the same way you would when he is doing wonderful things.

My 17-year-old daughter started hanging out with some neighbors that are not exactly our type. My daughter has always been a simple “eidel” girl and I am worried that these girls can influence her negatively. One of them is making a birthday party at a restaurant out of town and she really wants to go. I don’t want to let her go, but I am afraid that if I tell her too many “nos” she will stop asking for permission. This is a big question for you as a parent. However, there is some information that you should know when making that decision. Your daughter is a teenager and this is often the most difficult stage in the life cycle. A 17 year old has the maturity to think abstractly. She sees the world from a different perspective. Therefore, the question of identity comes up. “Who am I?” “What do I want in my life?” “What about my parents?” The teenager needs to establish his/her own identity as distinct from the parents. Your daughter knows she has you, her parents, as models, yet she’s thinking, “There’s a whole world around me. There are my friends, teachers, etc.” In her search for her own identity and independence, she is seeking additional models. But teenagers want to look for others, primarily peers, with whom to identify. Her peers have a great deal of power because they are possible role models, as distinct from her parents. There’s a lot of confusion about what’s right and wrong. They’re all trying to define themselves and find their own identities. As a result of that, teenagers are not that stable. For a teenager, it’s normal to have all these ups and downs, trying different things (sometimes extreme things!) They want to taste everything. They are trying to see where they fit in in this world. As noted above, peer pressure at this age is very powerful because friends have a lot of influence. Your daughter may be afraid that she will lose her friends if she doesn’t go to the party. She’s probably thinking that everyone will be there and, if she’s not there, she’ll be an outsider, creating even more pressure for her. It’s not easy to say no or yes. It’s a huge responsibility. However, at this stage, you as her parent should be there for your daughter. Reinforce a strong support system at home for her. Be open with her. Invite your teenager to build basic trust between you. If she see lots of negativity from you, she may not come back to you for support. Be her safety net. One idea that could be helpful is to invite family and friends who have teenage kids her age for parties, get-togethers, Shabbatot, etc. If she has teenage cousins, perhaps you could send her there for Shabbat if this is an option. That way, she can have the experience of being a teenager but in a more positive peer setting. In addition, it’s necessary for parents to reinforce appropriate limits. Many teenagers will rebel against these limits, but that doesn’t mean that the parent shouldn’t enforce them. Don’t fight with her; she needs someone to hold her and give her emo-
tional support. If you let her go out somewhere, you can say, “I let you go, but these are the conditions.” Or, for example, if she wants to go shopping, tell her, “That’s fine, but you can spend up to a certain limit.” Set boundaries, but coat them with a lot of love and affection. With teenagers, you must make sure to give all the explanations and reasoning behind your rules because, in many ways, they have the sophisticated thinking of an adult. Connect with her cognitively. Set boundaries until she sees the point. Again, for parents, this is the most difficult stage in childrearing, because they have to constantly find the balance between setting limits and being available emotionally, hopefully leading to a trusting relationship. As to your question whether or not to allow her to go to the party, if you feel that you can trust her to set her own limits while at the party, then perhaps you and she could establish a set of limits which she would obligate herself to keep (i.e., hours, kashrut of the restaurant, smoking, drinking, etc.). If you are uncertain of her ability to keep within those limits at the party or anywhere else she may go with peers of whom you do not approve, then perhaps it is best to say no, with an explanation, but without backing down. You are not her friend and she does not have to like every decision you make for her. However, it is your responsibility to help her make good decisions and, in the absence of good judgment on her part, it falls on you to do so. When teenagers rebel and the parents no longer feel in control, which is very common, often it is advisable to seek professional help, both for parenting skills and support and therapy for the adolescent. If you would like to send in questions to Dr. Genstil, please send an email to psychologist@biznessmag.com and perhaps your question will be featured in the next issue of Bizness Magazine. 052-260-9087 saragenstil@gmail.com

Those stories you hear are true. Tefillin bought for a bar-mitzvah and found years later to have been filled with the tightly-folded pages of a comic book. A series of misfortunes that led to a mezuzah check reveal a blank klaf with no writing whatsoever. Irreparable errors are discovered too late in a Torah scroll dedicated to a shul in memory of a loved one. Sta”m is an industry whose integrity we tend to take for granted but is not entirely infallible.
require or desire it to be,” adds Greenwald. “And since most sta”m items are for long-term or heavy daily use, you’ll want to choose an item that suits your personal needs and preferences.” But the large majority of customers aren’t really sure what they’re looking for or how to find it. Oraisah works with sta”m consultants who provide you with a quality kosher product that ticks all the right boxes on your must-have list.
“I compare buying sta”m items to buying diamonds, “We walk you through the entire process from initial because you need an expert eye to recognize their inquiry to actual purchase. We provide detailed pictures authenticity and true value,” says Rabbi Avraham of each item, and real samples are available on request so Greenwald, owner and founder of Oraisah, whose passion that you are fully equipped to make an educated decision. for safrus began 30 years ago. Oraisah is a consulting firm We get to know you and invest time and effort in really which specializes in professional advice on purchasing understanding what element of the sta”m item is most sifrei Torah, tefillin and mezuzos, or in its abbreviated important to you: The hiddur level, the sofer’s artistic flair, form: sta”m. vendors. The consultants they work with are familiar with the unique style of each sofer and can match customers with a sofer who suits their minhag, needs and budget. Some customers are happy to rely on their tried-and-tested sofrim and others know they can depend on Oraisah to assess a sofer who is not in their database. Since kashrus is the most essential element of any sta”m item, Oraisah insists on working only with consultants who have studied the complex minutiae of hilchos safrus, and are trained in various manual and digital checking of sta”m. These consultants have at their disposal advanced methods of checking every individual component of a set of tefillin – from the batim to the lettering – or any sta”m item, through both computer checks and the human eye by experienced magihim. “The kashrus of an item depends on the integrity of the sofer or vendor. But it’s difficult to judge these qualities in a person you’ve never met before. Experience enables us to determine if a sofer is trustworthy and educated, and whether he has yiras Shamayim and a love for the profession,” says Greenwald. Buying tefillin for a bar mitzvah or dedicating a sefer Torah are once-in-a-lifetime occasions and you want the experience to be positive, meaningful and memorable. Oraisah gives their full attention to all the details that are important to you and helps keep you focused on a fundamental aspect of the purchase – fulfilling the halachic requirements. Of course, these vary with each type of sta”m item since each has its own set of characteristics. Tefillin are manufactured through a series of complicated processes of which most customers aren’t necessarily aware. There are many different elements that affect the quality of a pair of tefillin, including the type of quill used by the sofer or the texture of the parchment, and each one
affects the final quality and price of the item. Buying a mezuzah is not necessarily much simpler, but does have its own pitfalls. Some customers can be distracted by choosing the style of the case that will house their mezuzah, and search for a mezuzah klaf based on what size will fit the case. Although there are not as many elements in buying a mezuzah klaf as there are in buying a set of tefillin, it can still be hard for the average consumer to be sure what they are getting. Similarly, with Purim just around the corner, consumers are starting to consider purchasing a Megillas Esther, and most people assume a kosher megilla is completely out of reach. But there are megillos available in a wide range of price brackets, and consultants know how to find you a megillah that is high on hiddur but easy on your pocket. “One of our goals is to dispel the myths and skepticism that surround the use of a consultant. Just like in other industries such as tourism or real estate, consultants have the relevant knowledge and skills the average consumer doesn’t, can guide you past the expensive extras and find you the item that best fits your needs for a better price.” Oraisah offers you total price transparency, so that you know exactly what you are paying for, and can actually save you time, money and effort and prevent a bad purchase decision. And if any issues come up postpurchase, you can be confident you have Oraisah’s full support and professional backbone to follow up with the vendor or sofer who supplied the items. Oraisah is committed to providing consultation services on the purchase of sta”m items of the highest quality and to your full satisfaction.

Riding the Waves

f you would have asked me six years ago if I could imagine becoming a sea skipper, I would have cracked up. I was an accountant, in my late 30s and the mother of eight children; I was far from typical sailor material. But a chance phone call led me to a sailing course that changed the course of my life. It set me on a journey to became one of the few female skippers in Israel, as well as a qualified sailing instructor. The course, which took place at the Via Maris Sailing School in Herzliya, covered both the practical skills and the theoretical knowledge necessary for safe sailing. As well as the subjects you would expect to study, such as navigation – including currents, map reading and route planning – and operating radios and motors, we also studied aerodynamics, which is the study of the properties of moving air, and basic meteorology. We studied all the theory at the Marine Sciences department of Hebrew University in Jerusalem and enjoyed many voyages in the beautiful waters of the Mediterranean putting theory into practice. Sailing can be as nourishing to the soul and psyche as the fresh water we drink is to our bodies. As well as helping us feel calm and relaxed, a voyage on the open seas is a great way to exercise and benefits the entire body. It uses all the muscles, especially the abdominals, which are really put to work when sailing.
As a sport, sailing is suitable for anyone above age 18 – and there’s no upper age limit. In fact, I have taught retirees in their late 80s who are on their second lease of life! In early May, I will be opening a course in English which will be held in the Jerusalem area. This course will give successful participants a “Mashit 30” certificate, a skipper’s license from the Ministry of Transport’s Port Authority to sail ships up to 24 meters long as well as motorboats of all sizes. The license also enables holders to sail or rent boats all over the world. During the course, you will learn everything from getting to know the various systems of the ship (including the engine and pumps), coastal navigation, instrument navigation as well as a practical summarizing course that teaches you all the hands-on skills you need for sailing. Don’t worry. You are never alone. Each student is paired with a coordinator who will help with any theoretical or practical issues that arise and is available for support throughout the program. Students also have access to an online study portal for added study materials and supplementary lessons to prepare for the written exam. The course, which will take place in Jerusalem and Herzliya, is suitable for men and women aged 18 and above. I am currently offering a special rate, but as the summer nears the price will rise. So register now and get ready to set sail.

INSURANCE
A Letter From The Heart By Shimon Cohen
Dear Friends and Readers, I’m writing this article in great sadness over the death of a dear friend, which was much too soon!! It sharpened our resolve to make sure that all of our clients, friends and readers are aware of the vital importance of two policies: a) Life Insurance b) Disability Insurance These policies are among the things that can make all the difference between leaving your family protected and taken care of, or leaving them scrambling for help and being dependent on others. We recently had a staff seminar where we brought up two reallife examples.
File #1 R.L. was a 55 year old who took out a mortgage policy with us. (A bank mortgage requires one to have both life insurance and structure insurance.) Less than a year later, this young man had a stroke and died. The life insurance policy kicked in and his widow gladly received a check for $200,000 which covered the remaining mortgage. BUT, in retrospect, we were unhappy. What we should have done is insisted on giving R.L. a comprehensive summary of all his life insurance and pension needs, not just for the mortgage.
Now the questions: How can I find out what I have? How much life insurance is there in my pension plan? Maybe I have some insurance from a previous employer? Answer: Today, this is relatively simple. We take out a summary (called mislaka in Hebrew) from a government site called Swiftness (www.swiftness.co.il), based on your teudat zehut. This lists all the various pensions and Bituach Menahalim policies that you have ever had. From this, we can see exactly how much life insurance and disability insurance you have and then advise you on what you need to add. *As an aside, life insurance premiums are relatively low. A few examples:
File #2
Age (male, non-smoker)

B.J. came into our office to take out a pension plan. This time we did the right thing — we went through what the pension would give him and worked out that he was not covered sufficiently for disability or for life insurance. The paperwork was done and the policy issued. Five months later, B.J. was diagnosed with cancer. He is now undergoing treatment but, thank G-d, his disability policy is giving 12,000 NIS a month to his family. As a result of these two cases, we decided on a campaign amongst our clients, friends and readers to make sure that you all have these two policies or, if not, your family enjoys financial security from other sources.

FACE-PAINTING: Spiderman • First create a base using a small sponge or wide brush. Then draw an almond shape around each eye and fill it in with face paint. • Next, draw the outline of the mask, which can either cover the whole face or just the area of the eyes, nose and forehead. Fill in this area in red. • For a full face mask draw the lines around the teeth in black using a make-up brush with a thin to medium tip. • Draw the spider webs with the same brush. •Extra tip: Your mask can be upgraded by adding a small black spider on your nose or cheek. You can also add white spots or stars using the same brush. This would give your mask more of an alive and three dimensional look. C ALL FOR D E TA IL S A BOU T M Y U N IQ UE

ARE YOU HOPING TO GO TO UNIVERSITY? •••• •••• •••• •••• ••••
Read what these three olim have to say:
Jenny
I made Aliya from California when I was 15. Although making Aliya was very exciting, it was also difficult. I took all of my classes in Hebrew and completed my bagrut exams. Nevertheless, I still prefer to study in English, and I am more comfortable in an English-speaking classroom. After high school, I worked with special-needs children as part of the Sherut Leumi program. Subsequently, I was very confused about which university I wanted to go to and what I would like to learn, and I was also nervous about taking the psychometric test. Even though I always wanted to study physical therapy, I was not sure if I would get the score I needed on the psychometric test to be accepted to the right universities. I asked some of my friends if they were going to take it in English and they told me that not only were they taking the test in English, but they were taking a prep course in English too. When I heard that, I was very relieved, I had thought that the only courses were in Hebrew. The GMAX psychometric course was everything I had hoped it would be. We got loads of study materials and the teachers were very good. I made sure to come to all of the classes and also studied every day for about two hours. My hard work paid off. After three months of study I took the test and scored 730! I never imagined how many doors would open for me because of my score. Thank you GMAX for your great course and excellent teachers. I couldn’t have done it without you.

I was born in Florida. We moved a lot when I was a kid and by the age of 17, I had moved six times. I don’t think moving was a bad thing; it was just hard to make new friends all the time. But eventually I just sort of gave up and stopped going to school altogether. About four years ago I made Aliya and immediately connected to Israel. I had always wanted to be part of something, so I joined the IDF and was drafted into the paratroopers unit. I really excelled in my unit and it was an amazing experience. After serving in the army, I decided to study business and marketing. I knew that the first thing I needed was a high school diploma, so I decided that my best bet would be to take the GED test. I needed to study all of the things that I didn’t study in high school. When my friends asked me how I was going to make up four years in six months I told them that I was in good hands. I had found a course that would prepare me for the test, give me all of the best prep materials and lots of personal attention. I took all the GED tests and started studying in the mechina program at Hebrew University. Next year I hope to begin my undergraduate degree. I owe a lot to my family, my friends, this wonderful country and am thankful for the awesome GMAX GED course that helped make this possible.

I made Aliya in 2011 from Brooklyn, New York. Last year I decided I would like to take the SAT test. I thought a lot about going to study in the US for a BA in Art. I knew that as much as I love Israel I just really missed my friends and family. I heard that the SAT score was good for some university majors in Israel and was required in the US, so I figured it was my best option. I was a little apprehensive about taking an SAT course in Israel because I heard that most students who join courses in Israel have a very weak background in English. I thought that if I had to go to a course and study fifth grade vocabulary I would be wasting my time and money. Luckily, I found out about an excellent course made exclusively for English speakers like myself. The course was excellent, we spent a lot of time on the math sections and verbal reasoning sections and we got amazing books and online tools to reinforce what we studied in class. The course helped me get into a great university. Thank you GMAX!

WHO IS MRS. SHAINDEL COHEN?
Mrs. Cohen is an internationally acclaimed educational consultant and social skills specialist who has lectured in Israel, England, Canada, Mexico, and throughout the United States. She specializes in nurturing the shy and selective mute child and has designed and taught programs related to this field such as communication and friendship issues, assertiveness training and self-esteem, social skills, conflict resolution and much much more. She is available to work with children, teens and adults on any related social skills challenges. Question: Does my child really need friends? Aren’t her sisters or brothers enough? Answer: When trying to create a barometer of “who is most likely to succeed in life,” people often think that externals are most important. What kind of car you drive, how big your house is, what kind of (designer) clothes you wear—these are the things that attract people. Others think that academics are the most important factor in determining future success; the straight-A student is guaranteed to be the future CEO. Yet others think that a family’s name or yichus is the most determining factor. In reality, study after study has shown that the ability to get along with all kinds of people and make friends wherever one goes is the single most important area which determines one’s future success in life. So the basic answer to the above question is yes, we need friends besides our siblings. Question: What are the advantages of having friends? Answer: In short, friendship is earned, while family just happens. Friends provide an external validation of who we are, while with family, the love is more apt to be unconditional. A good friend is a sounding board for us, and helps keep us in balance. With friends, we get to appreciate people who are different from us, and thus, our horizons are broadened. People without friends are more known to drop out of school and engage in alcohol and substance abuse. People without good friends are very often lonely adults. Chazal tell us “Kneh licha chaver,” but some people struggle to do this. Chazal also tell us beforehand, “Aseh l’cha rav.” Some people need a rav, a mentor, in order to learn how to make a friend, how to join a group or a conversation, how to bond with another. I’d be happy to give you some tools to enable you or your child to find the right friends and vastly improve your quality of life! 22

Mayanei Hayeshua Where Modern Medicine and Religious Observance Share Pride of Place
Until 1990, Bnei Brak, one of Israel’s largest Haredi cities, had no hospital to serve its almost 100,000-and-counting population. The risk to life and practical challenges it presented were great. When Dr. Moshe Rothschild established Mayanei Hayeshua in the heart of Bnei Brak, he foresaw the revolution it would mean for the city and for religious Jews all over Israel. Founded as a community hospital, Mayanei Hayeshua Medical Center (MYMC) is a public hospital with a unique mission: To provide cuttingedge medical services with strict adherence to Jewish tradition and Halacha, and the sanctity of life and human dignity as a fundamental and supreme value. Mayanei Hayeshua literally means “Springs of Salvation,” named after Reb Yehoshua Frischwasser, who was the chief donor in the establishment of the hospital. Frischwasser means a spring, and Yehoshua comes from the root word for salvation. No philanthropist’s name could have been more apt for an establishment whose prime purpose is to save and prolong lives. But how was it possible for one man to envision something so great and bring it to fruition almost singlehandedly? In Switzerland – Dr. Rothschild’s birthplace – there was a hospital for every city with a population of twenty thousand people. As a resident and medical practitioner in Bnei Brak, he recognized the necessity for a local hospital that would answer the particular needs of the religious inhabitants of the city: provide medical services of the highest standards without compromising on the characteristic spiritual level of the environment and the most meticulous dictates of Halacha. When the Gedolei HaDor – the Steipler Gaon, Rabbi Elazar Menachem Shach, and the Baba Sali, ztz”l – gave him the green light and much encouragement, he set out to raise the necessary funds. “I never thought I would become a schnorrer when I grew up, but life often surpasses all imagination,” Dr. Rothschild says with a wry smile. He scraped together every penny he could get his hands on, and finally had enough to purchase the land. Still, people were skeptical. “Dr. Rothschild has gone crazy,” said some in furtive whispers. The mayor of Bnei Brak sent him a letter stating: “You’ll be throwing money down the drain if you think you can build a hospital in Bnei Brak.” Even his lawyer tried to dissuade him by telling him he had competition for the plot of land he wanted to purchase. “A Frenchman has expressed interest in building a public
swimming pool on that plot, which is a far more practical investment.” But Dr. Rothschild stood firm and made a ten-percent down payment on an orchard for sale not far from his home. Not long afterwards, the foundation stone for the hospital was laid in the presence of Gedolei Yisrael. From a hospital that was predominantly a maternity ward, today Mayanei Hayeshua comprises fifteen departments and 45 outpatient clinics, and ranks third in Israel in the number of births per year, with an annual growth rate of approximately 10%. It employs a professional team of 1,000 highly qualified staff members, who maintain high standards of service, while a large group of volunteers provides a wide range of support services, day and night. Dedicated General, Pediatric & Maternity ERs, Internal Medicine, Intensive and Intermediate Care Units, Coronary Intensive Care, Gastroenterology, Dialysis, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Pediatrics, Cardiac Catheterization Unit & Heart Institute are just a few of the departments at Mayanei Hayeshua. The hospital also operates a variety of specialist outpatient clinics in the fields of Nephrology, Mental Health, Diabetes, ENT, Nuclear Medicine, Neurology, Orthopedic Surgery, Urogynecology, Male Fertility and Rheumatology, as well as a modern Imaging Institute, Pain Clinic, Voice Clinic, and paramedical services. Particularly well-known is the large Obstetrics and Gynecology ward which includes delivery rooms, a maternity and gynecology clinic, high-risk pregnancy department, neonatal unit and NICU. Mayanei Hayeshua has grown and expanded over the years and today serves over 200,000 patients a year. Other annual figures are also astounding: 6,000 operations, 300 patient beds, 13,000 obstetrical deliveries, 62,000 emergency room visits and a turnover of $65 million per annum. That’s quite an achievement for a hospital whose necessity had been dubious. An additional 20,000 square-meter hospital tower was recently inaugurated and houses the Psychiatry Unit, Nephrology and Dialysis Unit, Department of Pediatrics and a third Maternity Ward. The new Cardiology and Geriatric Centers are currently under construction and are scheduled to open in late 2017. Some existing departments have been renovated and expanded in the current building (with an area of 16,500 square meters) including renovation of the existing Gastroenterology Unit, and new CT and MRI facilities in the Radiology Unit, as well as development of other new services and equipment with the latest
advancements in medical technology. In the last five years, MYMC tripled the scope of its activities – an unprecedented feat for an Israeli hospital – and continues to break the glass ceiling in many areas of medicine and technology. One of the hospital’s prime goals in recent years has been to raise awareness in mental health, as well as reduce the stigma and prejudice that prevent many from seeking help. The new Psychiatric Unit, named “Marbeh Da’at” by Rav Kanievsky, operates under the guidance of Gedolei Yisrael, and makes this goal a reality in a newly inaugurated Psychiatry Building with modern design and all the comforts of a hotel. “The public is unaware of the extent of the problems existing in all educational institutions, from schools to yeshivot and girls’ seminaries,” says Dr. Rothschild, hospital President.“This sector of the population has been highly neglected and no hospital or institution has ever been able to fully meet the unique needs and requirements of certain communities.” Professor Yisrael Strous, Director of Mayanei Hayeshua’s Psychiatric Department and one of Israel’s leading specialists in the field of psychiatry (and resident of Ramat Beit Shemesh), stresses, “Mental illness is a common phenomenon in all sectors of the population and this is the first and only hospital in the country with a holistic approach to treating both adults and pediatrics as well as offering the discretion and sensitivity required by some communities. Anyone is welcome to use our services, but the atmosphere and program are aimed specifically at providing a solution for certain sectors of the population and are run according to halachic guidelines. There is an optional afternoon seder for limud Torah, and men’s and women’s wards and activities are completely separate, on separate floors, with only male staff in men’s wards and only female staff for women.” Advanced medical services and capabilities include operating room facilities and equipment for both conventional and endoscopic surgery. A new state-of-the-art digital mammography machine with sophisticated computer and digital technology enables early detection of breast pathology, yields better and faster image analysis and is safer with lower radiation exposure. In addition, the medical and nursing staff keep up-to-date with the latest medical developments by participating regularly in professional courses and international academic symposia. But Mayanei Hayeshua’s concept of advanced technology extends even to the support systems that function behind the scenes to make the administration of medicine possible. The hospital employs the most advanced computer and information systems and is a pioneer in the field of computerized medical records in Israel. This technology enables the transfer of medical information directly to the patient’s computerized record from the various departments within MHMC as well as from external parties. This reduces the number of errors, enables the concentration of a patient’s full medical data in one file, and facilitates the collection of information for research purposes.
Plans are already underway to integrate all hospital databases into the national medical information interface. MYMC is also the first medical center to develop unique medical applications for tablet PCs. Our medical teams use tablets to monitor a patient’s medical condition at any time and from any place, or receive rapid test results, that enable decisions in real time regarding treatment. Even green awareness is an integral part of the hospital’s philosophy, with investment of considerable efforts and measures to increase efficiency, reduce pollutant emissions, save money and make prudent use of resources. Green projects include a hybrid hot water system that ensures a reduction of 75% in the energy consumption required for heating water for all the hospital’s needs. In addition, a new environment-friendly chiller-fridge saves 30% on electricity consumption through lower refrigeration costs and increased cooling capacity, and the replacement of a diesel-oil heating system in the hospital laundry with a gas-operated system also reduces costs and waste of resources. So what really distinguishes Mayanei Hayeshua from its counterparts? The fact that it upholds age-old Jewish values, laws and traditions? Or its uncompromising pledge to ensure patients receive top-notch treatment from leading medical experts in state-of the-art facilities? Or perhaps the investment of significant resources in keeping abreast of the latest advances in medical technology? MYMC somehow successfully knits together these lofty objectives without detracting from the importance of any one, giving equal reverence to the expertise of medical staff, medical innovation and Torah jurisdiction. All activity operates under the expertise of Israel’s leading physicians and medical specialists in tandem with the direction and guidance of some of Israel’s most distinguished rabbinical authorities who determine the spiritual milieu and any day-to-day matters that require a psak halacha. The Rabbinical Council is headed by Maran HaGaon HaGadol Rabbi Nissim Karelitz Shlita, Maran HaGaon HaGadol Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky Shlita, and Maran HaGaon HaGadol Rabbi Yitzhak Zilberstein Shlita. What began as a modest community hospital in Bnei Brak, for Bnei Brak, has rapidly grown into a nationally renowned medical center where Haredi and orthodox Jews from all over Israel and abroad feel most comfortable receiving the medical treatment they need. All that’s left is to keep on growing and greet Moshiach on his way in.

What gives Rosenblum-Holtzman the edge? Throughout the years we have remained true to our vision: To consistently offer our clients personal and professional service. Upholding the firm’s reputation while keeping our clients’ information strictly confidential fosters trust and close relationships with both existing and new clients.
What’s the difference between using an internal and external auditor and in which situations is each most appropriate? An external auditor extends his opinion of the financial status of a company or a private business as well as acts as a company’s representative vis-Ă -vis the tax authorities. His job is focused on reviewing and auditing financial records and transactions in accordance with relevant applicable standards. An internal auditor is a “toolâ€? activated by management and the board and whose work focuses on the operational side of a business: review and analysis of a company’s appropriate behavior with respect to compliance with the law, proper management, moral integrity, savings and efficiency, and whether these serve to achieve its goals. Additional responsibilities include review of a company’s assets and liabilities including bookkeeping, as well as the manner in which it safeguards its property and manages and invests its funds. An internal auditor is the anchor on whom foreign investors can rely to maintain their rights over investments made in Israel, who otherwise would have no representation here.
Why is an effective audit system crucial for a business? Internal audit activity (rather than a system) that works specifically in line with the needs of an organization can help improve efficiency, reduce unnecessary expenses, assist in establishing procedures and guidelines for better management, reduce the chances of fraud-related incidents and aid managers to work in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. There is immeasurable added value in an effective internal audit.
Please explain in brief about the field of forensic accounting and its application. What type of establishments require this kind of service?
Many olim chadashim, especially from the western hemisphere, are involved in non-profit organizations (in the fields of charity, education, etc.). An internal auditor can advise and assist in avoiding “problems.”
Forensic accounting is a special type of audit aimed at detecting and preventing embezzlement, fraud and financial irregularities. This auditing field is based on a unique combination of knowledge, practice, experience and special training and we have vast experience executing this type of audit both in Israel and abroad (for citizens or corporations with businesses abroad).
How can your firm help local and foreign investors before they make an investment in Israel?
Members of our staff who deal with investigative and forensic auditing have over twenty-five years of cumulative experience. We maintain discretion and apply a “need to know” approach throughout the entire process, from referral through the various stages of the investigation, and confidentiality with respect to its results. For this reason, we strictly avoid any publicity regarding our activities. Our Firm provides expert opinions in a variety of areas, including evaluation and quantification of financial irregularities, financial disputes between partners, shareholders, creditor priorities and deprivation of minority shareholders, as well as special expert opinions for silent or inactive partners.
Are there any measures a corporation can take to prevent fraud and embezzlement and not merely react after it’s already transpired? I don’t believe water-tight prevention is possible, but there are definitely several key steps that organizations can take to significantly reduce the chance of fraud or embezzlement: • Establish Proper Procedures especially in processes directly related to funds like purchasing or payments (via signatory authorities). • Create Proper Segregation of Duties – Maximize the capabilities of computer systems already in use and compensate controls when necessary. • Recruitment – At the end of the day, it all comes down to the people doing the job. Although all people came into this world as honest human beings, organizations must apply a cautious approach when recruiting personnel: request recommendations from prior employers, perform social network or other online searches, verify certification if necessary, etc.
Our economic department provides professional consulting services in all areas, including corporate valuations, preparation of business plans, economic feasibility analysis, due diligence, preparation of expert opinions for legal proceedings, and more. The economic department staff has an in-depth understanding of each customer’s line of business and needs, which enables us to provide intelligent analysis of problems and issues while presenting feasible, efficient and effective solutions that take into account the organization’s constraints. Additionally, the economic department extends corporate valuations and due diligence services to inactive investors and foreign investment funds which have made several investments in Israeli companies (for example, in the hi-tech, pharma and medical devices fields).
What do dual (Israeli and US) citizens have to be concerned about when filing taxes? A dual citizen should be aware of the basic fact that US tax regulations are far broader than its Israeli counterpart. Numerous issues like the sale or purchase of an apartment or withdrawal of “tuition funds” have certain tax benefits or exemptions in Israel, while US regulations afford other benefits or none at all, and this is just an example in very general terms. Financial institutions in Israel strictly adhere to FATCA regulations, a fact that demands careful attention. Our Firm is also an independent member of Morison KSI, a global association of professional service firms (accounting, auditing, tax and business consulting), with numerous member firms in the US and Europe. This membership provides our Firm with direct access to accounting firms worldwide for assistance and consultation on any matter a client might face outside of Israel.
Is there any way to avoid double taxation? This is a complicated issue that cannot be addressed casually. The most crucial issue to identify, based on the US-Israeli tax treaty, is which country has the “primary right” to a dual citizen’s revenues or income.
Our firm has consulted for numerous corporations in risk assessment aimed at detecting loopholes and opportunities for misconduct and extending recommendations for improvement.
I highly recommend that dual citizens or olim chadashim consult with a professional accountant who has comprehensive understanding of tax matters before moving forward with any decision or action.
From experience, the cost of preventing a fraud is far lower than the cost of recuperating in its wake.
What’s your personal goal, having already achieved status as one of the most prestigious firms in Israel?
Is there anything a company can initiate at the outset to facilitate the auditing process later on?
Maintain and strengthen our reputation. I believe it is an incessant task to earn a reputation and this enables us to better serve and protect our clients’ interests.
For sure. Defining proper job descriptions for employees together with correlating authorizations in the organization’s information systems, setting proper procedures especially for key processes in the business, using updated information systems that are compatible with the scope of the organization – these are all a good start.

Timeless Perfection
Interview with
Rivka Rischall,
RI )UDPHG 5HÀHFWLRQV 3KRWRJUDSK\
Why photography?
What inspires you when you take pictures?
I’m passionate about photography! I adore working with families and children and the best part is helping to create priceless memories for families to cherish.
The outdoors and children’s constant joy makes me want to take more pictures!
What inspired you to enter the field? It started with food – food styling and food photography. And then my niece was born and I decided to give newborn photography a try, and I loved every aspect of it. By now I was ready to take my hobby a bit more seriously and I took a basic and advanced course at the Jerusalem School of Photography and had the opportunity to learn under the renowned wedding photographer Shmuel Diamond. All along the way I had been building my skill set in graphics and the technical side of photography in Adobe programs.
How would you define your style? Classic yet modern. I always make sure to get the usual expected shots, but I like to keep up with the latest trends and make every session something special and unique. My primary goal is to always let my subject shine.
Is photography art or technique to you? It’s definitely an equal combination of the two! The art is the atmosphere that is infused into each picture—the background, the pose, the composition, and the feeling you create with the picture. The technical side has to do with the complexity of the equipment and how best to utilize it as well as today’s requirement of using various computer programs to bring out the best in every photograph.
How has the use of photograph editing programs influenced the field in general and your work in particular? A good photographer has to take great photos first and then she can make them stellar with good editing. I’m careful about using the word “Photoshop” because some clients are worried about changing features and giving photos an unnatural look. That’s not what I do. I work with my clients to choose the best photos before editing and then work on those to enhance the positive aspects of photos that we both already like.
What’s the key to really capturing the moment so it will be remembered forever? Interactions. If you sit down, smile, and leave, it wouldn’t be memorable. So I always try to get the family to interact with each other and have a good time. The kids’ mood reflects the parents’ mood, so parents should try to be cheerful and relaxed, and make sure the child is well-rested and not hungry. Then this memorable experience is captured as a timeless keepsake for generations.
How do you work with impatient children? I start with the most important photos first. Then I can allow them the space to run, jump, play and be active; going with their flow lets me capture great action shots with lots of personality. Sometimes letting go of a few of the details in a posed photo allows the kids to feel more comfortable at the photo shoot and then the photos look relaxed and natural. Compliments are also a great way to boost a child’s confidence and give them the energy to keep going.

3D PRINTING THE FUTURE IS NOW BY BENZION CHEIRIF
F
or the last week I have been working with a local doctor who is inventing a product for the medical field. The way that we have been working together has been very productive and I wanted to highlight it in order to demonstrate one of the unique ways my services are provided. The doctor took his idea for the new product and went to tinkercad.com. He then used their online tutorials to learn the basics of 3D design. After a few short hours he had a prototype ready and sent it to me to print. A few design changes later and we are very close to a final product that can be sent for mass manufacturing. Other businesses, especially ones overseas, would have taken weeks if not months to provide the same service. Although I can also happily provide full service including design and modeling work, I am particularly proud of this job and wanted to share it as an example of one of my workflows.

Hypothermia and Preserving Body Heat
Part 2
By United Hatzalah
I
t’s important to understand which sectors of the population are most susceptible to hypothermia, especially during the winter: `` Infants — due to the fact that they have less muscle mass and less ability to effectively shiver in order to satisfactorily produce body heat, they are more vulnerable and need heat and suitably warm clothing. `` Invalids and the elderly — due to their decreased muscle mass and ability to effectively shiver and produce energy, and due to decline in nutrition which causes anemia. `` Anemic patients — suffer from iron deficiency, decrease in amount of blood; they commonly feel cold since blood is an important component in the production and preservation of body heat. `` Those who have extensive exposure to cold environment — homeless people, transients, field laborers, soldiers, etc. who are regularly exposed to low temperatures reach a stage in which it is significantly difficult to produce and preserve a standard body temperature. `` Alcohol and drug users — drugs and alcohol are a common cause of suppression of the central nervous system. In the case of overdose, loss of consciousness is possible, as well as suppression of basic physical activity and orientation. Therefore, even if the patient feels the low temperature, he will not have the ability to protect himself and to move to a warmer place. `` Hypovolemia — bleeding, dehydration, etc. are a major cause of hypothermia due to the significant loss of blood. `` Brain injury in the hypothalamus — this is where the body’s temperature control center is located. Therefore, a brain injury is liable to cause significant damage to the body temperature balance to the point of hypothermia. `` Patients suffering from cirrhosis or viral hepatitis — since the liver is the main organ which produces and maintains body heat, if it is damaged due to hepatitis or cirrhosis, this will cause a major decrease in body temperature. The main concern with regards to hypothermia is the suppression and slowing down of all the basic and vital bodily functions, such as the heartbeat, breathing, and oxygen consumption, and as well as the suppression of metabolic processes in the liver, pancreas, kidneys and more. Above it all hovers the issue of resistance to treatment; a severely hypothermic patient will almost never react to medical treatment or to the administration of electric shocks. So even if an EMT arrives to provide first aid, the patient still won’t respond to treatment. Another issue here is, due to the decrease in

metabolic processes, perfusion, blood flow, tissue oxygenation and disposal of waste products, acidosis develops. This causes significant damage to the central nervous system—primarily to the brain. The damage is manifested by confusion, disorientation in time and place, ataxia (duck walk), loss of coordination, listlessness and apathy to the point of loss of consciousness and death. The main danger is death, but wait! Not so fast. We know that brain cells die and irreversible brain damage occurs when the brain doesn’t receive the oxygen it constantly needs. However, due to the decrease in metabolism during hypothermia, the necessity for oxygen also decreases. This causes death by hypothermia to be long and agonizing. Even if the patient has been in cold conditions for an extended period of time and has severe hypothermia, and even if the patient shows no signs of life, that does not mean he is dead. This is mainly because, when treating a hypothermic patient, paramedics have a hard time even evaluating and manually taking measures due to the fact that the external areas of the patient are cold and sealed (therefore heartbeat, saturation, sugar, etc. may give us a false representation). Due to this difficulty, we understand that it is impossible to determine death or “not to start CPR” because signs of life may be hiding under the cold. A patient is not dead until warm and dead! Therefore, severely hypothermic patients who are not showing any signs of life (consciousness, breathing, heartbeat) require resuscitation. Complete CPR must be performed and at the same time the patient should be heated in order to aid in treatment (defibrillation and resuscitation drugs). A frozen patient’s medical condition will remain unknown until her body temperature returns to normal. Now that we understand the dangers and causes of hypothermia, we will review the various injuries and bodily damage that are caused by the cold. To begin with, it’s important to note that the best way to deal with hypothermia is by prevention. Therefore, it is highly recommended to focus on population sectors such as children, the elderly, and the ill who have difficulty in actively keeping themselves warm. One should make sure to eat nutritious and warm food, drink a satisfactory amount of hot drinks, wear dry and warm clothes, and be physically active on a regular basis. Wishing you a safe and warm remainder of the winter!

Suffering from Insomnia? You are not alone. An Israeli survey comprising 500 Israelis reveals that 41% of participants suffer from insomnia, while 8% use the aid of sleep remedies. Many studies have proven the fact that sleep on a healthy and high-quality mattress enables better and sounder sleep, which results in optimum functioning in the daytime. THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD SLEEP Many studies about sleep suggest that sleep is not a luxury but a basic necessity. It comprises about a third of our lives, and when it is good and qualitative, it improves our mood, our efficiency and our functioning throughout the entire day as well as influencing our quality of life and even reduces wrinkles. THE BEDROOM Planning our sleep environment and choosing the bed and mattress are important factors. The bedroom is the private domain in the home and should be designed in a way to ensure relaxation, comfort and tranquility. The bed should be attractive, comfortable and should provide the ultimate sleep experience with a superior mattress. Choose a comfortable, soft mattress that is not too hard, but at the same time ensures full support for the spine. WHAT ARE THE BESTSELLING MATTRESSES IN THE U.S.? The American magazine “BedTimes”, which is the leading professional magazine of its kind on the subject of mattresses, released a comprehensive mattress study. Its findings were conclusive: Ninety-two percent of Americans purchase spring mattresses, while only eight percent purchase latex and polyurethane mattresses. Simmons, which began producing mattresses in the year 1825, is the pioneer in spring mattress production. BEAUTYREST — SIMMONS’ EXCLUSIVE PATENT World-famous Simmons proves that its Beautyrest (pocketed coil) mattresses rise to the challenge of good, healthy and qualitative sleep, which gives consumers a healthier and better way of life as well Bnei Brak

as a product that has the durability to last many years. If we add the layer of latex (produced by the fabulous British manufacturer Dunlopillo) or the layer of NG Visco, which provides additional support and amazing comfort, there’s no doubt that tonight you will sleep better and much healthier. Research done in the Simmons sleep laboratories revealed that while sleeping we roll over in bed about 40-60 times, which diminishes the quality of sleep. Good quality sleep means a small amount of rolling over at night. The Simmons Beautyrest mattress enables adults, children and teenagers to receive the support they need. The mattress perfectly supports all parts of the body by means of the innovative Beautyrest technology, which adapts to body weight and allows for comfortable and healthy sleep. WHAT ABOUT ALLERGIES? The cause of the majority of allergies is the dust mite, a microscopic organism that feeds on skin cells which are shed from our bodies during sleep and which reproduces in warm, moist environments. In recent years, more and more people are suffering from dust mite allergies and therefore many companies are strict about using anti-allergy fabric that prevents its development. HOW OFTEN TO REPLACE A MATTRESS? A good mattress lasts nine to ten years, according to the American National Sleep Foundation, but should be replaced every five to seven if you don’t sleep well. Our body structure changes with age, which makes it necessary to change the mattress. In addition, new technological developments contribute to improving the sleep experience. Leading companies such as Simmons, Sealy, Aminach and King Koil make use of the latest innovative technologies, advanced raw materials, and improvement of their products, enabling their customers to sleep better. And so, we wish you nothing but good, beneficial and healthy sleep on a good and healthy mattress.

How to Cut Your AC Bill by 30%!
H
ere are three very good reasons to clean your air conditioners regularly:
1. SAVE ON YOUR POWER BILL Cleaning the coils on a dirty air conditioner/heat pump can save you up to 30% power usage for that unit. When dirty, a unit has to work harder to cool or heat the air because it is effectively choking as it tries to draw air through it. The harder a unit has to work in order to get the desired result, the more power it uses! 2. MICROBIAL CONTAMINATION All regularly used air conditioners/heat pumps become infected with “microbial contamination” which in-
cludes fungi, mold and bacteria. Air conditioners/ heat pumps are the perfect environment for such contaminants and of course, become airborne every time you switch your unit on, which is bad news for asthma and allergy suffers, children and the sick. A cleaning virtually eradicates microbial contamination so you can breathe healthy air again. 3. Y OUR AIR CONDITIONER WILL LAST LONGER A regularly serviced air conditioner will last a lot longer than one that never gets serviced. If you purchase a new car and never service it, you would easily shorten its life expectancy by up to 75%! Your air conditioner is no different. Most consumers are not aware of the above and erroneously believe that cleaning the filters is enough. In truth, cleaning the filters is only “basic maintenance”. With regular usage the entire inside unit also needs to be properly serviced. At TzviAir we can regularly clean your air conditioner units in order to maintain optimal performance.

Clear the Aisles for Super Smiles By: Dr. Eliyahu Gherman, DDS
I
magine you and your family decided only to eat healthy. It’s Friday afternoon, your family sent you shopping and you are in a rush. Unfortunately, you picked the supermarket with the tiny aisles. Everyone is trying to make their way to the checkout counters. Carts are bumping into each other and there is no room to move. You reach for the organic high-fiber chulent bean mix, and as you do a glass bottle of oil crashes to the floor. People start slipping and more items come crashing down. A jar of pickles misses you by inches! You hear over the loud speaker “spill in aisle 14” and one of those super cleaner machines is dispatched, but there is no room for it to get down the aisle… HELP!!!…. With an oil-drenched shirt and pickle juice in your hair you finally make it to the checkout. The cashier takes one look at you and says, ”Excuse me, sir, but you are wearing more than you are buying.” OK, so what does this have to do with your mouth? Let me explain. When teeth are lined up correctly, they form what is called embrasure spaces, or spillways. Each spillway is like an aisle in the supermarket. In the supermarket we saw why we want wide and clear aisles to avoid damage. In our mouths as well, when the teeth are ideally aligned, the aisles are open, passage is free and uninhibited and food can escape during chewing. In this case, chewing food actually becomes a self-cleansing process, whereby eating a piece of bread, for example, will push out any debris that might still be hanging out in the “aisles”. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a good idea to brush! Even, in the worst case scenario, if food does get caught, a simple brushing or flossing will clean up the embrasure spaces with ease. Diagram of straight teeth with clear spillways: GUMS Spillways
But what happens when the teeth are crowded and overlapped? The spillways disappear and instead we are left with crowded aisles and mayhem. Diagram of crowded teeth and blocked spillways:

teeth. Attempts at cleaning these areas by brushing or flossing are nearly impossible because the spillways are blocked. Even a professional hygienist cannot sufficiently clean the areas where the teeth are fully overlapped!

After
This patient had severe crowding in his lower teeth. Notice the plaque buildup! We used Invisalign for 10 months. After: Notice the unobstructed spillways and the healthier appearance. On a final note, because this occurs in the mouth (the entrance to your body), the bacteria that takes residence between your teeth can also have a negative impact on your overall health. Studies by the American Dental Association have shown that crooked teeth can lead to oral infections and make one more prone to other serious ailments such as heart disease, stroke, pneumonia and diabetes. So no matter what age you are, look at your teeth in the mirror. If they are crooked, then it may be the time to make that move now, to avoid damaging effects in the future. Call or email our office today for a free consultation. Fixing lower crowding can be as easy as wearing clear unobtrusive aligners for as little as three months! Anything else is just sweeping the dirt under the carpet. I’ll end with a nice letter I received from a patient after we corrected his lower crowding:

I never thought I would be a floral painter, but I find flowers to be fascinating subjects. The variable colors, shapes and patterns intrigue me. I am convinced that each flower with all its details is a manifestation of G-d’s glory on earth. When I see a beautiful flower, I see G-d’s handiwork. Flora means “flower” in Latin, but it also refers to flowering plants like wildflowers and plants not grown for food. Flowers
have been serving as a prolific motif for centuries. In addition, they have found their way into almost every art genre. The Dutch have a particularly long and varied floral painting history. Ambrosius Bosschaert, who lived between the 16th and 17th century, painted very realistic florals. He was one of the pioneers of painting highly detailed flower arrangements with almost scientific accuracy. Van Gogh was another master of flower painting, but in an impressionistic way, such as in his “Sunflowers”, painted in 1888.

5 TOISPINSG THE FOR CHO PERFECT WIG BY: RALPH WIGS Whether you plan to wear your wig every day or just on special occasions, choosing a sheitel can be overwhelming. Not only is a wig a significant financial investment, but our hair plays a large role in how we see and feel about ourselves. Here are five tips that will help you know which questions to ask so that you can buy the sheitel that makes you feel beautiful.
1. TRUST
Choosing a wig store or sheitel macher can be just as important as choosing the wig itself! If you have friends or relatives who wear wigs, ask for recommendations of people who are patient, experienced, and most importantly, not just pushing for a quick sale. However, at the end of the day, you must find someone you feel personally comfortable with that understands your style and needs.
2. COVERAGE
Whether you will wear your wig on its own or with something on top, make sure you are aware of all the different types of sheitels on the market today, offering different looks and levels of coverage. There is a diverse range of full wigs, pony wigs, headband falls and hat falls for example. No matter how much of your hair you choose to cover, you will be able to find a style that looks beautiful and natural.
3. STYLE
Do you want something very different from what you are used to, or a wig that resembles your natural hair as much as possible? Long or short? Bangs? Layers? Straight, wavy, or curly? Thick or thin? Try on as many pre-cut wigs as possible to see which style fits your face best, keeping in mind that the wig you choose will be customized to fit you perfectly. If you can’t find something you love in the store, look through magazines, browse the internet, and try on your friends’ and relatives’ wigs to get more ideas.
4. COLOR
Most wigs are available in a wide range of colors, allowing you to find the shade that matches your natural hair best. However, if you have always dreamed of going blonde or getting some natural looking highlights, this is your chance! An experienced sheitel macher will help you find a color that looks natural, even if it isn’t. Just remember, you still want to look and feel like yourself.
5. COMFORT
Especially if you plan to wear your wig on a daily basis, it is essential to choose something that sits comfortably on your head and fits you right. While average cap sizes fit the vast majority of customers, many wigs come in multiple sizes or have adjustable straps or “stretch caps” for a more flexible fit. Never settle when it comes to comfort; if you have a non-standard shaped head, you can always custom order or alter a cap to fit you properly.
Just like getting a haircut, remember that it will take some time for you to feel totally comfortable with your new wig - both how it feels physically and how it looks. Play around with where the wig sits on your head and how to style it so that you feel like you. More than anything, you need to make sure your wig makes you feel beautiful. At the end of the day, it is your confidence that makes you shine - not your hair.
Ralph Wigs prides itself on providing the highest-quality product. Our caps are custom created with your comfort in mind, and our hair is of the finest in the world. 38

Recently we made a Bar Mitzvah for our son and we had Eliyahu Stein play at our kabalas panim. People commented about how leibadig the party was and we attribute much of that to his fantastic playing. The sound level was perfect – loud enough to be exciting but not too loud that people had to scream above the music. He also was very open to hearing what type of music we wanted and did not want. We also found that he had a very good sense of what music to play at different points of the simcha. Overall we were very pleased with his work and would gladly use him again!

I would like to thank you from the bottom of our heart for enhancing our simcha so greatly. The music was on the right volume that we could actually appreciate it. Quite a few people commented on the fact that they enjoyed the music so much and I received even more compliments for the volume. You were so accommodating and easy going to work with.

Eliyahu is a very good keyboard player. He plays nice leads and adds life to the simcha. People want to dance when he spins his magic.

How to Change Your Tires Safely
E
ver get stranded at the side of a freezing cold highway with a flat tire? Know the feeling of waiting for hours for the motor rescue to show? With just a little know-how, you could be back on the road in no time, without having to rely on outside assistance. Fortunately, changing a tire is pretty easy, provided you’re prepared to exert a little effort. Read the step-bystep list below thoroughly, and you’ll be properly empowered for the next sudden breakdown. 1. Start by reading your car owner’s manual from cover to cover, especially the sections devoted to changing a wheel. This manual contains valuable information as to where to find the jack, wheel brace and any other tools you might need to change a wheel, as well as where to find the jacking points. 2. Please note it is very important to check the inflation pressure of the spare tire regularly. It’s extremely frustrating to find the spare tire already flat (!) when you need to use it. 3. In the event you do have a ‘flat’, pull off to the side of the road and on to a flat and level surface. Apply the parking brake and, after turning off the engine, engage the reverse gear in a manual car, or ‘park’ with an automatic. 4. Turn on the hazard warning flashers to warn other motorists of your presence. Remove the jack, wheel brace, and spare wheel from the trunk. Jack the car off the ground using the jacking point closest to the wheel being changed. Place the jack under the frame near the tire that you are going to change. Ensure the jack is in contact with the metal portion of your car’s frame
and, if you’re not sure about where exactly to place the jack, consult again with the car manual. 5. Pump or crank the jack to lift the tire off the ground. You need to lift it high enough to remove the flat tire and replace it with a spare. As you lift, make sure that the car is stable. If you notice any instability, lower the jack and fix the problem before fully lifting the car. 6. Once the car is off the ground, remove the loosened wheel nuts by hand and slide the wheel off the wheel studs. Fit the spare, run the nuts up as snug as you can by using your fingers. (Make sure the spare tire is facing the correct way and not backwards. That is, with the valve stem of the tire facing outwards, away from the vehicle.) Lower the car to the ground and tighten the wheel nuts by tightening every second nut in sequence using the wheel brace until all nuts are tight. 7. Finally, properly stow the jack, wheel brace, and punctured tire, and proceed on your way. Yay! 8. It is a good idea to place the old tire in your trunk and take to a mechanic, who will give you an estimated cost for the repair. Small punctures can possibly be repaired for fifty shekels or less. If the tire cannot be fixed, they will dispose of it properly and sell you a replacement. Follow these valuable instructions to the letter and you’ll never be left ‘out in the cold’ again! For additional guidance, further explanation or for a visual demonstration, consult us or your local car mechanic.

Interview with Paul Incitti, Owner of Building Care Services (BCS) What is BCS Israel? BCS (Building Care Services) Israel is a full-service A-Z construction and cleaning contractor, with over fifty years of experience in a wide variety of services that relate to properties.
How did it all begin? After I made Aliyah, I was doing this kind of work on an odd job basis for a year or so. I found that every customer I had encouraged me to build a company, telling me that they needed to get these services from a reputable, reliable and quality English-speaking provider. I listened to them, and thus my company BCS Israel was formed.
What are some of the services that you offer? • • • • • • • • • • • • •
Post-construction clean up with extreme detailing Certified mold remediation and removal expert Window cleaning of any height through rappelling Carpet, upholstery and drapes cleaning Renovations and new construction Crystal floor polishing/floor refinishing Painting – basic interior/exterior painting Light building repairs, handyman services Heavy garbage removal/sewer spill clean up Deep, thorough residential cleaning (beyond Pesach level) Rental property preparation Property management Vaad Habayit services (public spaces: hallways, lobbies, stairwells, sidewalks)
Who do you service?
Private residences, property managers, building management personnel as well as offices and commercial structures. We also work with architects, designers and other contractors who don’t provide such an extensive suite of services. Our
services are great for anyone who wants a licensed, legal, insured contractor handling their services.
Do you have your own staff or do you hire different companies for different jobs? All jobs are performed by our own people, unless there’s a requirement for a specific licensed subcontractor such as an electrician or plumber. The people we subcontract with have experience working with us on prior projects and have developed great working relationships with us over the years.
What are the advantages of using one company for so many services? Quality, reliability, accountability, knowledge, experience and flexibility. And obviously, it’s so much easier to buy one individually tailored package to meet all of one’s needs than to have to deal with six different companies. Even just keeping track of all their names and phone numbers is one big headache! The myth in Israel is that these services are to be separated for some reason. As a service provider in the U.S. you had to be able to perform all of these services as one company. The people/crews performing the tasks have specific knowledge and experience in these individual areas.
What types of renovations do you do?
We do bathrooms, kitchens, tile floors, parquet floors, plaster walls, windows, stairwells, demolition or new construction. We are widely used in complex retro fits where a unique solution is being sought.
Is your work guaranteed? How? Yes, we offer a monitoring package for any mold problems for which we have provided solutions. When it comes to any of our contracting projects, since we are the ones who built
it, we are always available to come and see if there is an issue. We generally don’t have these kinds of issues, but we certainly are available for our customers.
Do you do only big jobs or can someone call you just to get their couches or carpets cleaned?
dealing with mold problems and the like.
With such serious plumbing problems in many homes in Israel, how are you able to tackle mold effectively?
We are very flexible and can handle anything from large projects to simple ones such as cleaning couches. Whoever wants or needs our services will find their answer with us. We like to work and we give our customers what they want. Can you believe it? It’s true!
It’s true that the diagnosis and discovery process can be complex. The solutions can also be complex. In each scenario we effectively tackle moisture issues and provide a written plan for homeowners to follow after we’ve provided a solution. We generally don’t get called back unless the plan wasn’t followed or a separate moisture issue suddenly developed.
Are there certain upholstery materials that are harder to clean than others?
What has been the most memorable incident from your working career?
Yes, unfortunately certain types of stains on specific materials can be problematic. Stains might have sat over a long period of time and been absorbed into the material; or the spilled substance might contain dyes and chemicals that cause damage to the actual fiber or threading, and therefore the item cannot be cleaned. We try our best, but we do disclose these facts to our customers prior to starting. There are some materials, substances and stains that we cannot attempt unless the customer absolutely understands this. Usually the manufacturer has alternative methods and advice for such cases, but most likely they will say the same thing. We do have access to research tools on the Web, etc. and we use these as much as possible.
What do you do with stubborn stains on furniture?
Well, without giving away our methods and tricks of the trade, I can say that our technique often succeeds very well in stain and spot removing. We identify the stain and use one or more of a variety of cleaners to raise each stain and remove it for good. To tackle the stain effectively we are willing to do everything short of destroy the fabric. Our track record is excellent. That said, it would be best to know in advance that not every stain or spot is fully removable, as mentioned above. Due to a variety of factors, some might have become so embedded in the fabric as to have (a) become part of it, (b) permanently damaged the fabric underneath, or (c) changed the fabric color and integrity. Again, we will do our utmost, utilizing the best stain remedies available, but cannot in good faith promise 100% success. However, we trust our workers and our methods, based on many years of experience and success with some of the toughest stains.
What about painting? Our painting solutions are geared towards fixing up rental apartments or providing a one-color or two-color solution,
I’m saving that for the book! But to name a few memorable clients: In Israel, we have provided services to Sir Martin Gilbert, the great Rav Pearlman and to American Consulate members. In the U.S., various N.Y.-based congressmen, senators and the Marriott Marquis.
Can you provide regular weekly cleaning services? What would be the advantage over hiring someone directly?
We do provide this service to property managers with multiple properties that are rented out to guests and visitors. We have a strategic alliance with ALL THE BEST ISRAEL to provide legal, trained, and insured housekeepers to private residences.
What do you find is the biggest hindrance when your staff comes to clean a home? Generally it’s the preparation that the homeowners said they would do, but didn’t, and that we end up having to working around. These things happens and there’s not much we can do. We strive to give the most excellent service that can be provided under the circumstances.
What changes have you witnessed in the AngloIsraeli population over your years of service? I have seen many more people come into the same space as me and most of them for the same reasons. Opportunity is small here in the Hebrew-speaking world but I have also seen that start to change as well. More and more Israeli-founded companies are expanding their service capabilities and their global reach with their businesses. I believe in a strong Israeli economic base and a smoothly integrated AngloIsraeli population by working towards one goal.

Laser—The Modern Invention That’s Changing the World The word laser is actually an acronym: 'Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation’
A laser is a device that emits light and has constant (coherent) cyclic activity and identical (monochromatic) and parallel wavelengths. The light beams operated by the device are unique and they create tremendous energy for various uses. The first laser device was used and demonstrated for the first time on May 16, 1960 by scientist Theodore Maiman. The hair removal laser device was invented in 1979 by inventor Barry Jay who exposed his arm to a YAG laser and, after a few days, noticed that the exposed area wasn’t growing hair. Following a short study, the device went on the market, but was found to be ineffective, unstable, with a short lifespan and causing many side effects. After almost two decades of research and development, in 1995, the improved device was sent to FDA clinical trials. And at the end of 1997, the updated device together with the IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) device conquered the hair removal market. Up until then, no other devices in this realm had such advanced features. The principle behind the device is selective photothermolysis, meaning that light disintegrates the hair follicle. The laser goes through the light skin, is absorbed in the area that causes dark hair growth, turns into heat energy and destroys the hair. The dark target is generally melanin, which is highly concentrated at the base of the hair. Many technologies offer treatment particularly to people with light skin and dark hair—this combination shows a clear differentiation between their skin and hair color. In 2012, a new and revolutionary device was introduced that offers effective treatment both to those with dark skin as well as those with fair hair. Today, the laser device considered to be the best in the world is the Vectus® by Cynosure. The Vectus Laser has the most uniform beam profile available today and allows for the removal of unwanted hair, even in the largest areas, in less than five minutes. The required amount of treatments is between 6-10 as some hairs overcome their trauma and grow back. The number of treatments depends on a variety of factors, the most notable of which are hair properties and changes in the body. Benefits of Laser versus IPL The intensity of the IPL is lower than that of the laser device, while laser has a higher success rate. Likewise, the number of treatments needed with laser is significantly lower than with IPL. The Palomar Vectus® Laser Device — The Best There Is
The Palomar Vectus® Laser is an unprecedented innovation in laser technology. It is the best choice for the fastest hair removal and has proven reliability. The Vectus® Laser is one of the only devices in the world to provide hair removal for all skin types (even dark), all shades of hair (even fair and red; not for grey hair) and to any ethnicity. This device is suitable for treating large areas without sacrificing client comfort. Unique specifications: •The Vectus® Laser features the most uniform beam profile available today. •Revolutionary use of wide pulse for maximum absorption of melanin. •Unique innovation of photon recycling which maximizes results of treatment and lessens the total amount of treatments. •Large treatment surface which is chilled up to 4°, which allows for a comfortable experience. •Use of sapphire in order to ensure a smooth transfer of energy without warming the treatment surface. •Huge treatment area 8.74 square cm, and twice as fast as our leading competitor. •The only technology that features the Skintel™ Melanin Reader™ for a more effective, higher quality and safer treatment. Skintel " Melanin Reader" The laser device comes with Skintel, which the treatment provider uses to determine the client’s skin and hair type, then matching the treatment to the corresponding data. Skintel determines the average melanin density of the skin prior to laser treatments and provides accurate measurements, which help the practitioner better choose treatment settings for superior results, while minimizing risk to the client and maximizing accuracy. Until the invention of Skintel technology, aesthetic treatment providers primarily relied on old, fairly subjective tools to determine a client’s skin type, such as the traditional Fitzpatrick Skin Type evaluation, observations of the patient’s skin, and the patient’s account of recent sun exposure. With the help of Skintel, you can get accurate and effective treatment that will give you excellent and fast results. The Vectus® Laser technology meets the most stringent standards and has the approval of the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration), the CE (European Commission) and the Israel Ministry of Health.
