Letter from the Editor Dear Readers, Starting a business or growing a company is a challenging process. You can enjoy the ride alone or you can get help. There are always people who understand business better than you, are smarter than you, are more connected than you, have more experience than you or all of the above. Making mistakes or delaying growth can be very expensive — even more so if you are starting a new business. You only have one chance to make a good first impression. Lack of proper planning, proper funding or designing the right strategy, may not allow your company to survive for a second chance. You need to maximize your chances for success. Engrave in your belief system that you need all the help you can get, from the starting line to carrying it all the way through the life of your business. You can turn to successful and experienced friends, relatives, organizations, networking associations or create your own master mind group. Usually this type of help comes for free and you can gain significantly from their input and support. Everybody needs a good reliable sounding board, second opinion and sometimes just emotional support. These people must have “been there and done that.” They went through the lessons acquired by succeeding and by failing. You will be borrowing the priceless wisdom that only time and experience can produce. If you do not have access to such free support, then buy it. Hiring a qualified business consultant may cost significantly less than the price of failure or delayed growth. Getting the right help will catapult you and your business to a level you could only have dreamed about. Remember that one of the biggest factors in your long-term success is your emotional state in the early days. Early success will keep you motivated to continue. Early failure and obstacles created by mistakes will demoralize you and prevent you, your partners and funders from moving forward. The advantage of hired help is that it is always there when you need it. Successful friends and relatives have their own businesses to worry about. They may not be there to help you make crucial decisions during crucial moments. It is relatively simple to find consultants with specific set of skills such as SEO, copyright law, taxes, etc. But, it is very challenging to find a qualified “general consultant” to successfully lead you in launching or growing your new company, as you need a jack-of-all-trades. You are basically left with the option of a retired executive who had a sea of experience in his particular field. The potential disadvantage is twofold: (1) They are not a jack-of-all-trades. They are experts in a particular field and (2) they were corporate people and not entrepreneurs. There is a huge difference in the way these two worlds operate. So what better option do you have? Pray. Pray a lot. Pray for a proven successful businessman to come your way or, even better, go look for one — someone who can allocate time to your business as a contribution to society while he looks for his next deal; an entrepreneur who just sold his business and is enjoying a break or an entrepreneur who is retired. Hired help may come in different shapes and forms. You can hire a consultant on an hourly basis and use his expertise only when you need it. You can retain a consultant for a fixed number of hours per month and secure his time when you need his advice. In that way, you will know that he will be there when you pick up the phone. You can also retain him to be on your advisory board and get him to commit to a certain number of meetings per month. Lastly, you can combine all the above options according to the stage of your business. Be smart. Don’t go solo. Mistakes and delaying growth are much more expensive than paying for advice. Water Heaters “During winter months, when the sky is often cloudy, the source of hot water (water heating) switches from solar to electrical. Common malfunctions of electrically operated water heaters include failures of heating elements, thermostats or the pressure relief valves. The heater may be noisy or leaky. The hot water may be dirty or not hot enough. It takes about one hour to fully heat up a 100 liter tank of water to 60 degrees Celsius. If a water heater takes much longer than that to heat up, it is a sure sign that the heating element has to be replaced. A professional technician can diagnose and repair any water heater malfunctions and recommend a replacement of one, when needed. And for lasting repairs, it’s important to make sure that the technician one hires uses original manufacturer replacement parts.”

Winter Snow and Fire Snow

Fire

Snow-related claims do not happen too often, so when they do occur, they are always interesting. The following are all claims that we are currently dealing with: 1. As a result of snow build-up, my pergola and part of my roof collapsed. Am I covered? Answer: If you have structure insurance, you are fully covered. 2. A tree from my neighbor’s yard fell on my car and “totaled” it. Can I sue his insurance? Answer: Good question! If the branches were overhanging before the storm struck, there may be a way to claim. If, however, the tree was strong and safe but the unusual amount of snow caused it to fall, then your only recourse is to claim against your own insurance. 3. I live in Efrat. Due to the extreme cold, the glass koltim of our dud shemesh burst. Is this covered? Answer: Yes. This is considered like a “burst pipe” which is covered in the standard policy. Remember, many people have this covered through their mortgage insurance. 

Common Questions Question: When I buy a car, can I use the old bituach hova until I organize things? Answer: Don’t do it! In case of an accident, it could mean that you are not covered. Make sure your own insurance is in place before you drive away. Question: I’m selling my car, can I get insurance for a few days? Answer: You can get temporary bituach hova for one or two weeks. Question: I’ve forgotten to pay the hova and need to get to work. What should I do? Answer: Many companies (and agents) have options for you to pay directly by credit card and have a paid bituach hova in minutes. This can then be faxed or e-mailed to you. If this option is not available – catch a bus! Question: Can anyone use my car and be covered? Answer: Yes, as long as he/she is doing so with your permission and has a license valid in Israel. (Residents in Israel for more than six months must change over their foreign licenses.) Question: Can I take money for people using my car (e.g. a car pool)? Answer: This is not covered by the standard hova. (This does not apply to someone offering to share petrol costs, etc.). Question: If my car is stolen and then causes injuries to a pedestrian, am I liable? Answer: Because you did not give permission, the injury is covered by “Karnit” and if found, the thief will be sued. Last but not least, never forget to say Tefilas Haderech.  10

Now that the log fire/heater is warming you up, a few words about fire insurance: What is it? 1. In most policies, the definition of fire is the appearance of sparks or flames. (In other words, damage caused by a hot iron would not be covered under standard fire cover.) Also included is smoke damage and explosions. Spontaneous combustion is not covered, nor is theft as a result of the fire. 2. It is obvious that if you own your home/apartment, you should make sure that you are covered for fire damage for your contents as well as for the actual house/apartment. (This is done either through a private insurance policy or through your mortgage.) However, for those renting homes, it is extremely important to check your contract and see whether you or the landlord is responsible for this cover. Other aspects of fire cover are: • Payment for alternative accommodations • Payment of rental (depending on amount of insurance) 3. In our experience, most fires have been caused by unattended Shabbat candles and by clothing left near electric heaters – so, be warned! Feel like a Tiyul? Make sure that your compulsory third party insurance or bituach hova is in your car. This is an area which is particularly confusing to olim chadashim and is often misunderstood by “veterans.” What is it? The policy covers all bodily injury (including death Ch’V’Sh) which is the result of a motor accident. The policy provides cover for the driver, passengers and pedestrians that are injured in an accident. What is it not? The policy does not cover any damage to cars or property. How does it work? In practice, the insurance risk is covered by the insurance company that issues the policy. In case of an accident, your bituach hova will cover all those injured in your car irrespective of who was at fault. What happens in the case of a “hit and run” accident? This is covered by a special fund called “Karnit” which pays out the claim and then tries to find (and sue) the driver. The same principle applies to an “illegal” driver (e.g. a driver without a license, an underage driver, etc.) – the injured party would be paid out and then the driver would be sued.  Egert and Cohen Insurance — we are here when you need us! Taking Care of Your Needs Too is Good Parenting By Helen Abelesz

eing a mother is an all encompassing job. Our children’s needs can be so overwhelming that we have little or no time to think about ourselves. For short periods of time this can work, but constantly giving without ever looking after yourself is not good for you or your children. Meirav* was a mother of three small children. She spent her whole day looking after them and one of them always seemed to be up in the night. She rarely had a moment to herself. Being a full-time mother wasn’t exactly what she had imagined. She’d envisioned baking with her children and having the best fun playing with them. But her reality wasn’t exactly like this. She couldn’t bear the mess they made in the kitchen and she didn’t have the patience to play the same games over and over again. But what bothered her most was the sibling rivalry and the constant fighting. Why couldn’t they all just get on? She was always exhausted and found herself shouting at her children. Meirav couldn’t get out of this vicious cycle and so she gave me a call. When Meirav came to see me for the first time, she found it strange to actually have an hour to herself without her kids. She was feeling very tearful, overwhelmed and disappointed in herself as a mother. We began to explore what being a mother meant to her. For Meirav, it was to love her children and enjoy being with them. Unfortunately, because she was so exhausted and overwhelmed, she wasn’t really enjoying being with them. She even worried that she was damaging their relationship.

B

12

JANUARY 2014

We discussed how a mother is the central person in the home and when she is being neglected then everyone else at home suffers. Yet Meirav couldn’t see who was neglecting her. So, we examined her routines and special activities over the previous two years. I asked her to think carefully about that period and to tell me all the things she had done just for herself. Meirav began to realize that she could not even remember when the last time that she had done something for herself. And only then did it hit her. Meirav was the one neglecting herself. We continued working together. Meirav began to realize that to be a good mother she also needed to look after herself. She found a babysitter who would watch the children twice a week. During this time, I set her tasks, requiring her to do activities just for herself. Meirav found this challenging, so we made a list and agreed upon the things she should do in her “free time.” They weren’t big things but they were things that made her feel good, like reading a good book or going for a walk or coffee with a friend. We still had other parenting issues to work on, such as the sibling rivalry (which I will write about in the future), yet, by having this time to herself, Meirav was now able to have more patience for her children and enjoyed being with them more. If you, like Meirav, are feeling overwhelmed and would like to learn tools on how to deal with the stresses that life throws at us, then call me, Helen Abelesz, life coach, for a free first consultation at: 054 482 9815. If you have an issue you would like to me to write about, please write to me at: helenabelesz@gmail.com  *Not her real name and all identifying features have been changed.

Real Estate

We Welcome

Realtor Yossi Lipsh

to our Team of Experts!

Interview with Yossi Lipsh Tell us a bit about yourself and what attracted you to the real estate industry? My wife and I moved to Bet Shemesh about eight years ago in order to live near her parents. It struck me that olim from around the world were buying homes despite being unfamiliar with Israel, its unique challenges and its real estate culture. Buying or selling a home is one of the biggest decisions a person ever makes. I wanted to help each person make the best choice. I felt that being born in Israel and having lived in America was the perfect combination to help my clients by negotiating on their behalf as an Israeli and servicing them as an American. How did your prior work relate to Real Estate? For many years I was a technical producer for major events and concerts. I serviced some of the biggest production companies in Israel--the IDF, the Ministry of Defense, among others. Every event was attended by thousands of people. Everything needed to be done right and on time. We worked under pressure with no option other than perfection. I now apply the same skills to ensure that every client is serviced efficiently and professionally. My goal is clear. For the buyers, we need to find the right home within their budget, with the right layout, in a good building, in the appropriate area of town, working hand-in-hand with them until the deal is done. For the sellers, we need to get the best price on the mar14

ket, in the least amount of time, through a headache-free process. In our property management division I ensure that every property is managed to the highest standards. No details can be ignored. It must be right every time. How did you learn the trade? I formally trained with one of the top real estate companies and received a diploma in addition to my real estate license. But the real skills of the trade must be learned in the field. I like being out there, involved with the people, getting information first-hand. When I first started as a realtor, I didn’t wait for phone calls and I still don’t sit in the office waiting. Geographically, which is your area of expertise? I sell in Ramat Bet Shemesh Alef and Gimmel only. As we are taught, “Tafasta Merube Lo Tafasta” (Grasp All, Lose All). I have lived and breathed RBS A for eight years and I can proudly say that in almost every building in RBS A, I know at least one or two of the residents. I constantly visit the new projects being built around RBS A, RBS Gimmel, HaMishkafayim, Mem 3 and more. I must see a project develop with my own eyes. I’m always walking all over RBS by foot, talking with people, learning the neighborhood, seeing each and every building personally. I know the exact layout of most apartments in RBS. I have come to know this neighborhood inside out. On my computer I have 80% of all the blueprints in the area. I know the Va’ad Bayit of

almost every building, the different communities and rabbis. All these years I’ve formed fantastic relationships with community leaders, with the residents and my fellow real estate agents. How is your approach to dealing with customers innovative? I am first and foremost a listener. I seek to immediately understand their needs. I usually take them to two-to three places that fit the description for their new home. I then get their feedback. We usually don’t need to go to more than one or two additional homes to find the perfect match. To what do you attribute that so many people trust you and like you? I can relate to everyone. My clients are Anglo Chareidi, Anglo Modern Orthodox, Israeli Chareidi and Israeli Dati Leumi. I make sure to give people true and accurate information about every home and every street without smoothing things out. I say it like it is. I work hard and check things out for myself in order to understand the quality of each apartment rather than taking anything at face value or from hearsay. I service my clients above and beyond the contract. Clients can call me at 11 o’clock at night and I go out and meet with them until everything is worked out to their satisfaction. What has been your best advertising medium? In order to maximize exposure for the properties I sell, I advertise on a regular basis on many platforms in Israel and abroad. My website and my Facebook page are always up-todate with the newest properties and the latest news. But my most successful advertising is my service--personal recommendations, referrals and returning costumers. Is there anything that differentiates you from others after you have finalized the sale? I am passionate about every client’s new home wanting them to find it to be everything that they expected it to be. I am there for my clients from start to finish and beyond. If a client needs advice or any help after the deal is signed, I am still there for him until he is truly “at home.” Why have you been so successful in finding homes in Bet Shemesh for people from Jerusalem? People need very precise guidance. I get phone calls from parents who have been living for many years in neighborhoods like Neve Yaakov, Har Nof, Bayit V’gan and Ramot. I get calls from young couples as well. Each person needs to be guided to the right corner of town, to the right building, to ensure that this “huge event” of moving to RBS and buying a home here is a complete success. People living in Jerusalem want a realtor who knows this market inside and out and stands by his promise to deliver the home that they dream of. Where is your office located? We are at Nachal Dolev 38, RBS. We have easy access and plenty of parking available. 

or the past few months we have been hearing about the new Real Estate Tax Law reform that was published at the beginning of August. The reform already went into effect on August 1 for acquisition tax and will go into effect on January 1 for the main part of the land-appreciation tax. It seems that the purpose of the reform is to discourage investors in real estate and to encourage owners of multiple homes to sell their homes, thereby flooding the market with homes and thus bringing down the price of residential real estate. The tax reform is sweeping, and it requires Israeli real-estate professionals to relearn the Real Estate Tax Law. In this article we will endeavor to explain some of the changes in the law. First of all, to understand what is different, one must understand what went on before. In every real-estate transaction there are at least two types of taxes. Land-appreciation tax is paid on the profit from the sale of real estate and acquisition tax is paid on the acquisition of real estate. Land-appreciation tax is paid by the seller, unless otherwise agreed to by the parties to the contract, and acquisition tax is paid by the purchaser. The tax reform relates to both land-appreciation tax and acquisition tax. Land Appreciation Tax In the past and until this December 31, anyone owning more than one residential home in Israel could sell a home every four years and get an exemption from land-appreciation tax as long as the seller fulfilled certain conditions set out in the law. Now, as of January 1, an exemption from land-appreciation tax for the sale of residential property will only be given when the home sold is the only home owned by the seller. If the seller owns more than one home at the time of the sale, he will not be entitled to the exemption from land-appreciation tax. Another change in the law is the limitation of the exemption from land-appreciation tax to the part of the price up to NIS 4.5 million. If the price of the home sold is more than NIS 4.5m., then land-appreciation tax will be levied for the amount of the price above NIS 4.5m. Under the current (or soon to be previous) law, there was no limitation on the price for which someone could get an exemption. For example, one could sell a home for NIS10 billion and get an exemption from land-appreciation tax if he met with the conditions of

the law for this. Another change in the law is the cancellation of the exemption from land-appreciation tax for foreign residents, even if they only own one home in Israel, unless they can prove that they do not own a home in their country of residence. How this is to be proved is not known and so it appears that there will be no exemption from the land-appreciation tax for foreign residents. Many countries levy tax on their residents or citizens for the sale of property abroad and they allow the amount of tax levied in the country where the home is located to be credited against the tax that they charge. Where this is the case, there is usually no damage to such a foreign resident who will now be forced to pay land-appreciation tax in Israel. However, under the current and soon to be previous law, a foreign resident could get an exemption from the land-appreciation tax if he met the conditions set out under the law for this. The reform has left exemptions from land-appreciation tax in the following instances: When the home sold is the seller’s only home, when the home sold was inherited, when selling two small homes to buy one larger one, the sale of building rights in a condominium and the sale of residential property inherited by non-profit organizations. Each of these exemptions is subject to conditions set out in the law. It is the policy of the tax authorities not to grant an exemption from land-appreciation tax to foreign residents for homes inherited by them. Under the previous law, one could give a sibling a gift of a home and not pay land-appreciation tax. Under the reform, this exemption is only allowed when the gift is between parents and children. However, sometimes there may be an exemption from land-appreciation tax from sibling to sibling if the property originally came from the parent. Under the reform, the exemption from land-appreciation tax that is given for the sale of the single or only home is granted once every 18 months. If in addition to the home being sold, the seller owns up to one-third (as opposed to one-fourth under the previous law) of another home, then he will be deemed to own only one home. The tax authorities see a married couple and their minor children as a family unit. So if one person in this unit owns a home and another person in the family unit owns a different home, then each one of them will be deemed to own more than one home and in doing so will not be entitled to the exemption from land-appreciation tax when selling a home. All is not lost for anyone not entitled to an exemption from land-

appreciation tax after January 1, 2014, and up until December 31, 2017. For this type of seller there are three magic Hebrew words: Shevach reali lineari. The term shevach reali means the actual profit from the sale after all expenses and costs for the purchase and sale of the home are taken into account. Under the reform, this type of seller will be entitled to a big prize (and we are not being facetious). The actual profit (the shevach reali lineari) earned on the home up to January 1, 2014, may be erased. However, this can be used only twice during the above period on homes acquired before 2014. This can mean possibly no tax or very little tax for the sale of a home even when no exemption is available for the seller. However, “profit” earned due to the inflation will be taxed. Each case is different and must be investigated individually to see if the seller can enjoy the benefits set out in the law. It is then critical that owners of multiple homes sit down with Israeli advisers now and do some very careful tax planning. Acquisition Tax The tax reform has brought about changes in acquisition tax as well. Acquisition tax on property that is not residential has been raised from five per cent to six per cent. Acquisition tax for the purchase of an additional home or acquisition tax for the purchase of a home by a foreign resident is higher than the acquisition tax for the purchase of a home where the purchaser has no other home. The tax has been raised for expensive homes. Ownership of one third of a home will not be deemed ownership of an additional home. Again, each case may be different and should be investigated individually. It is clear that careful acquisition tax planning is necessary when purchasing a home as an investment as well. What tips can we offer? US investors may want to consider using a US LLC (Limited Liability Company) to invest in Israeli real estate. It seems that an LLC will only pay 26.5% company tax in Israel on rental income and sale gains, which should be creditable against US taxes. There are special rules dealing with property acquisition groups. Old techniques for avoiding VAT and/or acquisition tax on part of the purchase price have been blocked. More generally, beware of

purchasing groups with 35 or more “offerees” –- a full-blown listing prospectus may be needed by law. Limited partnerships exist in Israel, the US and many other countries. Investors get limited liability but only the general partner can manage the operation. Tax rates in Israel may range from 25% to 52% (in limited instances) but can usually be credited against taxes in a foreign investor’s home country. Complex rules apply to REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts). The above tax reform has set the whole system on its head. It is not yet clear if the results will be worth the chaos such a mas-

sive change in the law has caused. As always, consult experienced tax advisers in each country at an early stage in specific cases. YOUR COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO ADHD:

I

n the last issue, I explained the diagnosis of ADHD. In this issue, I discuss the core idea of the Brain Balance* program and what sets it apart from anything else. Why is My Child Struggling? As a parent, it is painful to watch your child struggle socially, behaviorally and academically. Yet, understanding why they are struggling and how best to help them is often a confusing and frustrating process. Whether your child has a formal diagnosis or not, understanding the root cause, or what is happening in the brain of a child with these challenges is critical to effectively addressing the problem. Understanding the Underlying Problem A properly functioning brain communicates between both hemispheres, as well as within each hemisphere, at lightning speed. Think of these communications as runners in a relay race. They connect, pass on information and release, repeating this process millions of times a minute. In a poorly functioning brain, these runners are often out of sync, missing each other or passing on only partial information. This miscommunication is called Functional Disconnection and is at the root of all types of learning, behavior and social problems. A Functional Disconnect Functional Disconnection Syndrome (FDS) explains the symptoms that we see in a long list of neurological disorders, including but not limited to, ADHD, learning disabilities, Tourette’s syndrome, OCD, sensory processing disorder and Asperger’s. All these conditions are the result of either a right- or left-brain deficit. The symptoms are different depending on the side of the brain and the area(s) affected. No matter

18

Part II

Functional Disconnection Syndrome

what label you attach to it, they all fall under the umbrella of FDS. It does not mean that the brain is diseased or damaged in any way, because it is not. It is simply not developing as it should. A functional disconnect can occur at any time during brain development, even in the womb, but it generally remains undetected until obvious symptoms begin to appear. The Symphony of the Brain A brain out of balance is like a symphony out of tune. The key to both sides playing beautiful music together is that each musician must not only play the right notes but he must play them at precisely the right time. The notes are constantly changing from moment to moment – the strings join in, go out, crescendo, pause. The same with the horns. All the time this ebb and flow must be perfectly timed. On occasion, a musician might miss a beat without notice, but if the conductor focuses on the right and doesn’t pay attention to the left, the players on the left can get confused, slow down or even stop. The two sides get out of harmony. Suddenly, the music they were playing doesn’t sound familiar at all. The exact same thing happens in the brain of a child with FDS. The Brain is Changeable It was once thought that the brain was static, unable to grow or change. But extensive research and in depth study of epigenetics has shown that it’s remarkably adaptable, able to create new neural pathways in response to stimulus in the environment. This is a branch of science called neuroplasticity. Additionally, it is now understood that the difficulties associated with a wide range of learning disorders and neurobehavioral issues result primarily from environmental

influences that affect genetic expression and are, therefore, often correctable. Because the brain can change, and because difficulties can be corrected, children suffering from Functional Disconnection can be greatly helped. For people with ADHD, Autism, Asperger’s, or Dyslexia, the Brain Balance program is the best option available today. Dr. Robert Mellilo’s hemisphere based therapy demonstrates that there is not a problem of damage, but rather a functional disconnection. This means that some parts of the brain have lagged behind others in development. These are not purely genetic disorders or damage. Brains of ADHD or Autistic children’s brains do not demonstrate any clear-cut pathology. This information alone gives people hope and hope itself is a great tool towards healing. That being the case, a 12-week course of therapy can be instituted with the goal to develop the weak areas of the brain. In just 12 weeks, without drugs, over 80% of patients are able to drop their medications with their doctor’s help. Eighty-two per cent of 60 children lost the ADHD diagnosis within 12 weeks. Sixty per cent of them had a two grade level jump and 35% of them jumped four grades. These were very compliant cases with parents and children doing a lot of the recommended therapies between center visits. This is certainly very exciting news for a very difficult health topic, which, until recently, seemed to have no answer and no end in sight. It proves the chiropractic vision that the body has the ability to heal itself and the brain and nervous system are the master controllers of the entire body. By providing the brain with the boost it needs, in some cases great results can be achieved. Normalization of function is always the goal without drugs or surgery. In the next issue I will discuss the role of diet and nutrition as well as environmental factors in the management and even cure of ADHD.  Dr. Rosenberg offers a free, one-hour consultation in person or by phone to discuss your health issues. am of course referring to the choice by borrowers in finding the best mortgage for themselves. In past articles written for this publication I have touched on some of the different factors one should take into account when deciding what type of mortgage is best suited for you. While I do understand that it is much easier to have someone else tell you what to do or let someone else make a choice for you (and yes, all the details, issues and considerations involved in the process of getting a mortgage can be daunting) but the ramifications of any decisions made will have significant influence in financial terms, greater than almost any other decision you have ever made. Let’s remember what we are talking about. A mortgage is your largest single financial obligation. It is tied not only your largest asset but to the asset that you use more often than any other. If you have a persistent leak, sooner or later you will fix it. This is because you realize that it is a significant waste over time. That is why you take the time to hire a repairman or you fix it yourself. One way or another, you learn what to do to find the resources to stop the water running down the drain. If you multiply that loss by many, many times, on an annual basis, given the potential duration of the loan, and then add a couple of zeros, that is a significant amount of potential money you are pouring down the drain. I am sure that you are now saying to yourself, “What am I supposed to do? It is not feasible to become an expert overnight or even in the amount of time that most people have to arrange their mortgage.” But what you can do is educate yourself enough so that with the help of an experienced expert you can make choices based on understanding the actual or potential consequences of your choices and make sure that the potential effects of those consequences are in line with your interest and desires. I am passionate about this and I train my staff to educate my clients wherever possible. Sometimes clients get that glazed look in their eyes that says, “I don’t care. Just fund me.” But, after the process, they usually understand why the information was important and they see that it enabled them to understand what to do. Once we finish a general pre-qualification process that allows us to understand what the potentially available options are given the current requirements for loan approval; we focus on the borrower’s preferences and help him understand his options given his particular situation and we help him to understand the ramifications and effects of those options. At this point, our client is in a position to make a choice like a professional or, in the vernacular, choose like a pro. 

The Meeting Point between Man, Body & Motion

Gyrotonic

®

Life in a Spiral

What were your very beginnings? As I child I danced every free second that I could even while in the army and then through my university years. That is where my special love for the human body and its improved capabilities began. Studying towards my B.Sc. and specializing in the development of medical instruments, planted a seed of curiosity to the understanding of how the body reflects the laws of nature, from a scientific point of view. What led you to Gyrotronic®? I taught Pilates at the Wingate institute and was one of the first teachers to bring the “Gyrotonic®” method to Israel from the USA and Europe where it is very popular. I am certified as a Master Trainer and have been a professional therapist for over 13 years. What is unique about Shmone’s motion therapy? Conventional medicine looks at the change of the person’s normality, trying to take the deviation or irregularity back to normal. At Shmone we observe the body as a complete biological unit and the actual reason for the deviation. Through motion we create input which makes a better global reorganization of the whole body which helps fix the deviation or the body’s symptom. We also create a good alignment and wellbalanced joints. All surrounding muscles become flexible and strong and the bones situate in the best position possible. This increases range of motion and improves posture. It also brings space that improves the activity of internal organs and systems (lungs, heart or the digestive system).

Interview with

Talma Targan

22

JANUARY 2014

Why spiral? In nature there are no straight lines. Every joint in our body has a three-dimensional direction. Bones and muscles develop in a spiral direction. Blood vessels and nerves have a spiral direction of flow. How does tension cause pain? Modern life has taught us to go straight towards our goals. We are looking outside of ourselves and neglect or forget our bodies and our true natural ways. Most of today’s suffering and reasons for going to doctors is the pain caused by tension which causes stagnation and stress and prevents the body to function and move in the natural spiral. What is a functional movement? A three-dimensional movement. It is efficient and only uses the amount of effort necessary, in a way that balances all muscles and the surrounding joints related to them. That’s why after a session you feel energized, lighter and stronger. What is special about the machines and how do they improve the workout and rehabilitation? The machines allow the body to move in the best fitted way. The specially designed weights help support the body, creating a feeling like moving inside water. The resistance is suited exactly to the person’s needs and abilities. All joints, muscles and fluids move and arrange as a whole, to create a stronger, well-balanced movement. Who can benefit from the sessions for therapy and rehabilitation? Our classes deal with therapy for ailments such as arthritis, joint pain, osteoporosis, tendonitis, sleep apnea, insomnia, spinal problems, foot and hand injuries, neck pain, shoulder injuries, lower back pain and other postural problems. The classes may also help reduce or entirely eliminate the need for pain relieving drugs. With whom do you work? My clients are very diverse. Most have private sessions on a regular basis as a way of life, a way to prevents physical problems and to maintain a good vital and happy life. Here are some examples of clients:

A Studio with Specialized Equipment for Physical Training and Rehabilitation

Mothers: mothers with demanding lives, and mothers after baby delivery give their bodies time to recover and recharge. Middle Aged Women: Including those suffering from heat waves and weakness are surprised to suddenly feel better and more alive than ever. Office Workers: Men and women who sit in offices or spend many hours a day in a car who need a break in routine to give their bodies a chance to regenerate and reorganize. Children, Adults and the Elderly: Those with postural issues (like scoliosis) or orthopedic pain after injuries and surgery. Pregnant Women: To keep their posture balanced during pregnancy and prepare their bodies for an easy delivery. People Wishing to Lose Weight: give their bodies the space to change, by releasing blockages, making weight loss easier going deeper into a full body workout. In all cases our sessions promote physical and emotional health by giving the body fresh energy. This helps our clients live their lives to the fullest. Where can you have a session? Shmoneh operate two centers: Emek Ha’Ella Studio at Givat Yoshiyahu (seven minutes from Bet Shemesh, thirty minutes from Jerusalem) and Shikun Dan Studio in North Tel Aviv (close to Ramat Ha Hayal, Ramat Ha Sharon and Bene Brak). The

Language of the Brain A

nyone who has ever held a newborn baby feels something very special. No matter what state of mind you are in, the baby, as if possessing a higher wisdom of communication, dissolves all your worries and pressures. We feel a sense of peace, a sense so rare that we never try to duplicate it in all our other endeavors. There is a hidden language of the brain, a language so simple that we outgrow it too soon. It teaches us how to open our eyes after birth, pick up our heads and eventually how to crawl and walk. All mankind shares this process but man falls into a cosmic trap which is very difficult to escape. Let me explain this with the help of the insights of the Maharal. We are told that every fetus in the womb knows all the Torah. And how, before birth, an angel comes and hits the baby on the mouth/lip causing it to forget all that it has learned. Once the baby is born, he has a life-long job to relearn what he was made to forget. The Maharal asks a question: If we wanted (not that we would) to make a baby forget, wouldn’t we need to hit the baby on the head? What is the meaning of hitting the baby on the mouth? The Maharal explains that a child’s ability to learn how to speak and to form words is what causes him to forget his learning. Until the child has words, there is no intermediary between his feelings and his brain. He is an expert at listening to his inner sensations in relationship to his environment. He is a master of being secure when he is curious and exploring his surroundings. The myriad of mistakes he makes in his trying to maneuver has no shame or ill feeling. He learns from every mistake and each mistake is a part of his success. What he learns is important but the conditions that create the learning are the most important. The ability to learn is man’s greatest gift. This special quality becomes disturbed when words begin to take over his world. When a child says “bottle” it could mean that the child is hungry, or it wants attention or to play. We need to interpret what the child really wants. Just as words can conceal more than they reveal, so, too, our thoughts hold us back from realizing our dreams. They prevent us from all the opportunities that the fleeting present has to offer. Ninety-five percent of our thoughts today will be the same thoughts that we had yesterday and the day before that and every day. Mankind seems to be habitually stuck and we need help to move on and develop our lives. How is it that we are not in touch with our feelings? Before we thought in words, we were the center of our lives. Our sensations and brain went hand-in-hand. Every minute was turned into a learning and growing experience. But, the minute one needs to be understood or needs praise in order to feel good, the world is turned upside down. As we grow older, we distance ourselves further and further from the very process that created us. Maybe we have answered our original question about how a newborn has such a strong effect on us. The fact is, all our words 24

JANUARY 2014

B y D ovid R ubin

Founder B rain L anguage ™

are useless when playing with a newborn. The only way of communicating is through touch, but a touch without any habitual role-playing. The touch is gentle and soft. The touch is more oriented to listening than to giving. Perhaps the secret of harmony lies in doing but in not disturbing. How many times do we find ourselves going against our inner sensations but are helpless to do otherwise. I see clients in the cities of Jaffa, Bet Shemesh and Jerusalem. For the last fifteen years, I have been helping people out of pain, physical disabilities and learning disabilities. Until now, most of my clients have been private. It is my hope that group classes will be soon set up enabling me to help more people in a more costeffective way. It is my prayer that the need for achievement will be replaced by the satisfaction of finding the natural way of growth, respecting our inner sensations and connecting to a greater source than our habitual thoughts will permit us. This may be the road less taken but most definitely will make all the difference. Dovid Rubin can be reached at 054-220-8142. 

Interview with

Natan Feit, reflexologist “ All of a sudden he was calm!

The pain was gone! We could sleep!

I was hooked.” Natan, what is your background? I am originally from Miami. I moved to Israel when I was nine. After my marriage, I started to learn in the Torah Ohr Kollel. I have been there for the past ten years and I have been living in Beitar for the past seven years. What got you interested in reflexology? I always liked the idea of healing and preventing sickness without medicine. After our first child was born, we saw like all parents, that babies and children suffer a lot from ear infections. The child is in a tremendous amount of pain and very agitated. We never got to sleep and just suffered along with our child without having a way to help him! Once we saw that after antibiotics the baby can still get sick even a few days later, we began looking for an alternative. I read an article on the basics of reflexology and decided to try it out, especially since it is accepted by all medical insurances. All of a sudden he was calm! The pain was gone! We could sleep! I was hooked. Where did you study reflexology? I learned at Michlelet Shalem, an alternative medicine school in Jerusalem. What is the origin of reflexology? It is mentioned in the Papairosis from ancient Egypt. They used it for preventing and curing sickness. Around 80 years ago, Dr. Yunis Enghaim from England learned which parts of the feet 26

JANUARY 2014

are energetically connected to different parts of the body and used this information to help his patients. He then began teaching it to people from all over the world. In 1989, after three years of research, Vaadat Ayalon permitted reflexology in Israel. That same year, the Israel Reflexology Association was opened. What is the actual science behind reflexology? Just as the meridians (energy lines) in Chinese medicine reach the feet so all of the energy lines in the body reach the feet as well. The body is mirrored on the feet and therefore reflexology can reach the whole body. You have to try it and see how amazing it is for someone to feel so much better all over the body just by touching their feet! The real science is that it works! What type of conditions should be treated with reflexology? Many conditions could be treated through reflexology. For example, infections, bone and muscle pain, thyroid problems, immune system weakness, constipation and problems with the digestive system, mono and other viruses, prostate enlargement or infection, migraines and other neurological problems, asthma and much more. But, of course, preventing these problems is the most important and that is our goal in treatment. What can I expect in a typical session? Reflexology is a type of foot massage. Through the pressure points that are on the feet, I can pinpoint where the imbalance (i.e. sickness) is in the body. Through the feet, you can work on the whole body and directly affect the area that needs treatment. A typical session lasts between 35-40 minutes. What’s the typical number of sessions or treatments required to solve most problems? It depends. For acute problems, like back pain that just started, or an ear infection, it could be one or two treatments. If it is something more chronic, then usually it is between six and twelve treatments. The rule of thumb is, the longer that the problem exists, the longer it will take to correct it. Are there any complications or side effects? There are no complications and usually there are no side effects. Some people may experience slight dizziness, blood pressure could rise and muscle soreness. These side effects subside soon after. There are some cases where I wouldn’t do reflexology — right after surgery or to someone with high blood pressure (over 170). Tell us about a recent successful healing experience. One patient, who for several years suffered from constant pain in his back, muscles and feet to a point that he could barely pick up anything, came to seek treatment through reflexology after conventional medicine did not work for him. After seven treatments he felt like a new person! Today he comes for an occasional follow-up session just to feel refreshed and for preventive measures. Who should be treated with reflexology? It is recommended for healthy people. It gives them energy and alertness and is a preventive measure. It is also recommended for people on the verge of sickness or who are already sick and need treatment. It is also great for anyone who is on medications and wants to lower their dosage or stop completely. How should people contact you? I see patients in Beitar and in my office in Har Nof. I also see patients in their homes if needed. It is best to reach me by phone. Anyone who has a question or would like a session is free to call me at 052-763-4820. 

FOR PARTICIPATING INFORMATION

Tell us about your background. I am the Rav of Kehillas Ohev Yisroel in Ramat Shilo in Ramat Bet Shemesh. How did you get into the mezuzah and tefillin business? I became involved in stam after helping members of the kehilla get their tefillin and mezuzos checked. I was shocked to find that there were shomrei Torah u’mitzvos who were using pasul or almost pasul tefillin or mezuzos. What exactly is it that has to be checked? In Meseches Eiruvin 13, Rebbi Meir warns that sofrei stam should be very careful because their work is a meleches shomayim. If just one letter is missing or if there is one extra letter, it can destroy worlds. I did not understand the depth of this gemara -- how could a small mistake that was not found cause a person to sin over and over again, never fulfilling the mitzvah properly? It is a truly a great responsibility. I was given a pair of tefillin to check from a person whose father had passed away after many years of illness. He left his tefillin for his grandson who was soon to be Bar Mitzvah. I opened the parshios and they looked kosher. I sent them to a stam specialist. He was shocked that a person had worn such tefillin his entire life! The crowns on the letters were switched and although kosher according to Kabbalah, such a switch brings midas hadin to rest on the person. What I then learned was that technically tefillin can be kosher but they need to be much more than that. That is when I decided that I needed to bring a greater awareness regarding the mitzvah of hidur in tefillin and mezuzahs.

Interview with

Rabbi Binyomin Flintenstein How often must mezuzahs and tefillin be checked? According to most poskim, tefillin that were checked need not be checked again as long as they still have chezkas kashrus. If the tefillin were constantly in use and there are signs of paint swelling this could mean that they were damaged by the sun or by dampness. If the paint has started to peel or the straps or corners of the batim are damaged, they should be checked and repaired. Not having to check tefillin only holds if the original checking was done by a meticulous and qualified sofer. If there was no checking ever done on the tefillin or one is not sure that they come from a reliable source, they need to be checked. It is recommended to check tefillin that are used daily once in seven years and those that are used only now and then, every three and a half years. Mezuzahs should be checked every three and a half years. There is a minhag to check mezuzahs every Elul. When one rents an apartment, one should inquire from the previous renters regarding the nusach and level of kashrus of the mezuzahs. Many times the renters take their mezuzahs with them and leave plain ones in their place. How can anything happen to a mezuzah or tefillin that have been totally protected by its box? If one suspects that a mezuzah became wet from the rain or if a 30

JANUARY 2014

mezuzah was exposed to direct sunlight, as it was hung in a transparent case, it needs to be checked. A pair of tefillin was brought to me after being left on the dashboard on a tiyul. They were checked and the sofer found that the heat had completely dissolved the ink on the klaf. The writing was no longer legible as the letters had melted into one another. The tefillin were pasul and they could not be fixed. What services do you provide? I help people choose what is right for them. There are levels of hidur. And people are not aware that there are also differences for Sefardim and Ashkenazim. I have tefillin and mezuzahs written by sofrim yirei shomayim who are well-learned in the halachos of stam smicha for safrus. The batim are produced in a factory by yirei shomayim with the best hashgacha. The tefillin go through two checks, one by an expert checker and then by computer. I have tefillin and mezuzahs to loan while checking/repair is being done. The repairs included fixing the batim, painting and replacing the straps. What type of chances do people take when buying from an unknown person? From whom should they buy? I have found many pasul mezuzahs and tefillin and even batim which were not according to halacha and were pasul according to all shitot. When one wants to buy from a particular place, one puts trust in the seller -- especially where there is really no way for the purchaser to know what he is getting. Regarding stam, there must be a maximum level of trust. There are things that cannot be checked, such as a whether or not the sofer wrote l’shem mitzvah. Safrus needs kavana. Before each name of Hashem, there must be special kavana. Without kavana, the stam is pasul and one would never know. From my experience, there is much stam being sold that is pasul before it ever gets to the customer. Sometimes, I have to tell a customer that the tefillin he has been using for years was pasul. Usually, they don’t believe it until they see it with their own eyes. The tefillin were bought in a Jewish stores but that is not enough. Having tefillin and mezuzahs checked at the beginning, can save a lot of pain and aggravation. Today, there are even mezuzahs being sold that come from China and some that are even being written by our Arab neighbors. Rabbi Binyomin Flintenstein can be reached at 052-725-5017. 

BIOFORCE

USE THE FORCE...

By Dr. Lavi and Dr. Gherman

32

JANUARY 2014

I

n popular culture, “the force” is an invisible power that a Jedi knight taps into in order to destroy evil. In the orthodontic world, Bioforce is an outstanding tangible innovation that has greatly improved the comfort, speed and results of orthodontic treatment. What is Bioforce? Bioforce is the first biologically correct, high quality orthodontic wire introduced by the Dentsply GAC company. It has many advantages that make it superior to other standard orthodontic wires. First, a little background on tooth movement. Orthodontic tooth movement is carried out by engaging successively increasing sizes of arch wires in braces that are bonded to your teeth. Contrary to what you might think, it is actually the WIRE that moves the teeth, not the braces. The braces simply house the wire and transfer the force from the wire to the teeth. Different bracket systems are designed to transfer the force of the wire to the teeth in slightly different ways. As we discussed in previous articles, an experienced orthodontist should be familiar with the subtle nuances of the different bracket systems and determine which bracket system is best suited for each individual situation. With all the different types of brackets on the market, it is easy to overlook the importance of the orthodontic wire itself. Why is a Bioforce wire better? As orthodontists, we know that different patients need different treatment approaches. For example, in getting a teenage patient to brush his teeth properly — some patients

Bizness Magazine

need to be told only once. They salute and then devote all their energy into making their teeth sparkle like the sun. Other patient require repeated lectures, begging and pleading, and many post-it notes stuck in various locations to remind them about the stick with the bristles that sits by the bathroom sink. Researchers have found that teeth are not all that different. Each type of tooth requires a different amount of force to move it in the fastest, healthiest and most ideal way. So while a lower incisor needs 80-100 grams of force, a molar needs 250-350 grams of force. Bioforce wires are better because they are designed to deliver the correct amount of force to each tooth! In addition, Bioforce wires are temperature sensitive, activated by the heat of the mouth (cool)! This makes them very gentle and comfortable when placed in the braces, as they are still very soft. This feature also allows us to place a thicker wire at an earlier stage, thereby decreasing the amount of time you need to wear the braces (very cool)! Finally, no matter how thick the wire or how much we need to deflect it, it will deliver the same gentle ideal force to each tooth. Doctors Gherman and Lavi are always looking for the most comfortable, fastest and ideal way to give you a healthy and beautiful smile.  Dr. Gherman’s and Dr. Lavi’s office is located at 1 Nachal Tamar, Ramat Bet Shemesh. A New, American-Style,

Auto “Service” Center in Bet Shemesh

A

utoKING is a new, American-style, auto service center which is now open in Bet Shemesh. It is located across the parking lot of the BIG Fashion Mall near the train station. We interviewed the two partners, Ariel Levy, the head mechanic, and Aryeh Deverett, the general manager. What are your backgrounds? Ariel: I have been a mechanic since I was 15. I love fixing cars. I made Aliyah from America. I have been servicing cars of the Anglo community in Bet Shemesh for the past 10 years. Aryeh: I made Aliyah from Toronto a couple of years ago. My background in Canada was in customer service. I had a company that did major service work with many large retailers and brand organizations across North America. One of my main clients was Toyota and I gained a lot of experience in how to run a professional auto service center. Why did you decide to open a new garage in Bet Shemesh? Ariel: I have been servicing the Anglo community in Bet Sh34

JANUARY 2014

emesh for the past 10 years but have been working out of other mechanics’ garages. I always dreamed of having my own professional, fully-equipped shop so that I could really take care of my clients. Now I do. With my new shop and my team of mechanics, I can now give clients faster service at an even lower cost. Aryeh: It seems that in Bet Shemesh people are always looking for a good mechanic. And after having my car serviced in some of the shops, I understand why. Until I met Ariel, I felt I was overcharged and under-serviced every time I took my car in. I and mechanics who couldn’t answer my questions (and certainly not in English). And I knew that I was being overcharged. I continue to hear exactly the same frustrating stories from so many people who are being taken advantage of by some garages. It’s not right. I felt that Ariel and I could do a better job at providing the type of service that we all deserve: Quality service, fast and at a low-price. That is why we started AutoKING. We know that you probably don’t understand how your car works — but we do. And we’ll take care of you. We answer all of your questions (in English or in Hebrew!). We appreciate that customers like you are the reason we are in business and we will do everything we can to service you well. How is AutoKING different? Aryeh: Ariel is a brilliant mechanic and a mensch. He is fluent in English and Hebrew. And, most of all, he is honest, fair and patient with all his customers. He is the kind of mechanic that we all want to recommend to our friends. That is why I partnered with him. But every good mechanic needs a good shop, good systems and good management. That is what I bring to the table to ensure that our clients’ experience is as smooth and satisfying as possible. Ariel: Everyone has the perception that taking a car for service is the “guy’s” job. But many times the woman of the family needs to drop off the car for service. I make sure that all of my clients, especially woman, get treated with excellent service. Does AutoKING cater only to the Anglo community in Bet Shemesh? Ariel: We cater to everyone who drives a car. However, I think that the Anglos will really appreciate our “Americanstyle” professional service. It is what they were used to in their former countries. Aryeh: AutoKING is for everyone in Bet Shemesh. It’s your shop as much as it is ours. We appreciate every customer. Try us out the next time you need service. And please let me know if we met your expectations. 

HOW TO CHOOSE

ŸĂˆ´½ œ°¡½´ °´Ă…¸Ă

KITCHEN CABINETS

itchen cabinets are the first thing that you think about when you are imagining your new kitchen. Why? Because kitchen cabinets are very basic and their design and function are very important. Add to that the fact that kitchen cabinets take up the most room in the kitchen. The decision about kitchen cabinets is very complicated. There are many types, shape, sizes, materials, special designs, types of doors, drawers, metal accessories and thousands of other details that are connected with kitchen cabinets. Let us begin with the different types of kitchen cabinets. First of all, it is important that you know that kitchen cabinets are built in two parts: 1. The body of the cabinet — the box itself without the doors or the drawers. 2. The façade — the doors and the drawers. It could be that you will be surprised, but the choice of only solid wood to build the body of your kitchen cabinets is hardly ever used. There are two reasons for this. The first is that large sections of only solid wood tend to get warped with changes in temperature and humidity (something which will not be lacking in your kitchen). The second is related to price. Solid wood is very expensive, much more expensive than the other possibilities. And when you are talking about a large amount of material as in the amount needed to prepare kitchen cabinets, the difference in price is very, very significant. But when we are dealing with cabinet doors or drawers, the amounts are much smaller and therefore the problem of the solid wood getting warped is much less and the price is not sky-high. So from what materials are good cabinets built? • Plywood (“sandwichâ€? board) • Particle board or chip board (“sibitâ€? sometimes called “shevavitâ€?) • MDF (medium density fiberboard) The main differences between the various materials are in quality and price. “Sandwichâ€? and “sibitâ€? are generally used to build the body. “Sandwichâ€? will cost more but will also last longer. MDF is generally used to build drawers and the façade because it is denser than “sandwichâ€? and one can engrave decorative elements on it and even coat it with veneer to give it the look of wood. And if we are already talking about materials‌ The facade of the kitchen cabinets, in other words the kitchen 36

cabinet doors, can be decorated with different designs—solid wood, wood covered with varnish, wood varnished with Formica or a polymer covering. Every material has its advantages. Solid wood offers you the natural traditional look which is appropriate for village kitchens but Formica and Melamine have endless variety and possibilities for design that are more appropriate if you like modern kitchens. But‌ With a little imagination any material can be appropriate for any style of kitchen. In effect, kitchen designers today usually use more than one material to design kitchen cabinets or use the same mate HPDLO NLWFKHQV@JPDLO FRP a rial but with different finishes or colors. And here is a design tip: What can upgrade the design of the cabinets significantly? Handles (or door knobs)‌ That is Correct! Handles! For kitchen cabinets handles are one of the most important items to be chosen. That is why it is important to spend time and energy in choosing correctly and picking the most appropriate handles for you. More on metal accessories in the next articles. 

Helping Kids Heal:

When Your Child Needs

Psychotherapy

W

By Dr. Rachel Rashkin-Shoot

e prepare children for all sorts of things in life—a new babysitter, the first day of school, the arrival of a new sibling. Preparation is important because children, like adults, find comfort in knowing what to expect. The same sense of security is critical to helping a child who is entering psychotherapy. The decision to seek therapy as a treatment option for your child is generally not an easy one for most parents. Many parents feel they somehow failed and that if only they would have done X, their child wouldn’t need “someone else’s” help. While these feelings are normal and need to be processed, it’s also important not to let them interfere with getting your child the help he or she needs. Whatever your reason for considering therapy, it’s likely that your child’s struggles significantly interfered with his or her day-to-day functioning. Finding a therapist who will be a good match for your child is the first step and is often no easy task. Consulting with your child’s pediatrician or trusted friends or family members for referrals can be a good start. Once you find a therapist, don’t be shy about asking his or her level of professional training and experience in working with children, how he or she approaches the therapeutic process and what you can expect in terms of your involvement in the process. Keep in mind that for young children, seeing a therapist can feel like a play date; the therapist is someone who simply has interesting things to play with and who talks about feelings. Don’t be alarmed with the words “play therapy” since for young children in particular, play is their natural form of communication. A skilled therapist is learning a wealth of information about your child through play. For your school-aged child, however, the thought of seeing a therapist can feel frightening, overwhelming and trigger all sorts of feelings. Adolescence presents its own set of challenges; with many teens worrying a therapist will simply be one more person in their lives telling them what to do. Most importantly, while you’re searching for a therapist, trust your gut. As a parent, you’ll have a good sense of whether a particular therapist will click with your child. It is always important to help your child understand the underlying reasons he or she will be seeing a therapist. Examples of helpful statements might include: “Sometimes you get very angry at school and hurt the other children. A therapist can help you understand what makes you so mad and help you learn better ways

38

JANUARY 2014

to show how angry you are without being hurtful.” Furthermore, it can be extremely useful to explain to your child that a therapist is a “feelings doctor” who helps kids with all sorts of behavioral problems. Some will take to this analogy instantly, while other kids will be more skeptical. Either way, the idea is to present the psychotherapist as someone kind and helpful. Older children and adolescents may need to be reassured that unless they are a danger to themselves or others, what they talk about in therapy is private. For older kids, negotiations around what and how much to include parents in the therapeutic process will be something navigated along the way, as well as the reminder that confidentiality will be respected (a concept the therapist will reinforce). Although improving, there unfortunately exists a stigma attached to psychotherapy which can be further exacerbated by personal, familial and cultural beliefs. For that reason, parents ought to first examine their own feelings before attempting to prepare their children for the healing process of therapy. Children may need to be reminded repeatedly that seeing a therapist doesn’t make them “sick,” “bad” or “weak”. As a parent, you need to genuinely believe that. Remind yourself that many, many children (and adults) see therapists at various points in their lives to work through issues that will hopefully result in a more meaningful, rich and satisfying life. Supporting children throughout therapy by discussing it in a positive, reassuring tone will help them perceive psychotherapy as an opportunity to heal rather than a punishment. Remember, children are resilient; they won’t be in psychotherapy forever. Praise your child for having the courage to work through his or her emotions and behavior. This will foster a sense of accomplishment and help your child feel proud of mastering his problems and forging ahead in his development. In turn, you as a parent will feel competent and rewarded for your effort to keep your child’s well-being on track.  About the Author Dr. Rachel Rashkin-Shoot, an American-trained psychologist, made aliyah three years ago. She is the author of three selfhelp books for children: “Feeling Better,” a story for children entering psychotherapy, “An Umbrella for Alex,” a story for children living with a mentally-ill parent and “In My Corner on the Moon,” a story for children who experienced trauma. Dr. Shoot sees children, adolescents and adults, with a wide variety of psychological issues, in a warm, confidential environment. Bowling Bet Shemesh

Interview with

Gili Sharoni & Eli Kaplan

10 Lanes

3rd GAME FREE

New Bowling Alley in Bet Shemesh Where are you from? Originally we are both from Jerusalem. In the last half year I moved to Bet Shemesh. What are your business backgrounds? Eli comes from a background of doing sound and lighting at events. I previously ran wholesome entertainment clubs in Jerusalem and Maaleh Adumim. In recent years, I have moved on to the business of bowling alleys and managed the bowling alley in Mishor Adumim. Where did the idea for a bowling alley in Bet Shemesh come from? The original plan was to build a bowling alley in Maaleh Adumim. After we bought the equipment and were in advanced negotiations, Meir Balaish [a deputy mayor of Bet Shemesh] approached us and asked to set up a meeting. In our meeting with him he convinced us of the potential in the city for the development of places of entertainment and business

initiatives. After a thorough review we were convinced enough to copy the bowling alley plan to Bet Shemesh. The investment in a place like this is very high, a lot higher than in most other businesses. What gives you the confidence that it will succeed? In my opinion, there is a lot more to add in the way of culture and entertainment to the city of Bet Shemesh and I believe that the city is ready for it. How is it going so far? There is a great deal of interest on the part of the residents. They are very happy that there is finally a place to go and do something during their free time. And most importantly, there is now an alternative for birthdays for all ages. What other attractions are there at the bowling alley? In addition to bowling, we have video games and a kosher dairy cafeteria. We also

30 shekels per game

are a place to have warm, social and family meetings. How many lanes are there? There are ten lanes. How do you plan to keep the environment healthy and safe for children and families? We have chosen not to allow in alcohol in order to keep the warm, cultured family atmosphere with sporting values. How much does a game cost? It is 30 shekels for a game (on weekends too), a third game is free (but not on Saturday nights). In the near future, we hope to organize tournaments and set up a bowling league for Bet Shemesh and the surrounding area. Bowling Bet Shemesh is located in the Sun Centre next to the Paz Gas Station in the Industrial Area. The entrance is to the right of the Paz Yellow and is one floor above Sheshet. Tel. 02 5877171. 

Fast and Furious or Slow and Steady:

Is Rapid Weight Loss

Just a Quick Fix? B y D r. B o R osenblat

C hief P hysician for D r. B o’s D iet

I

am frequently asked, “Is rapid weight loss safe?” This is a great question but ironically I most often hear it from people so overweight that they are already in a very unsafe position regarding their health. A better question would be, “Is rapid weight loss safer than being obese?” I recently saw a patient in the ER who I diagnosed with appendicitis. Immediate surgery was recommended to remove the appendix before it ruptured. The young patient asked me if the surgery was safe. I explained that the surgery was a routine procedure and as a healthy young man he should do very well. There are always risks associated with general anesthesia and surgery but the risks associated with a perforated appendix (sepsis and death) certainly justify the smaller risks of the surgery. While a more moderate approach to weight loss works for some, discouraging people from seeking out all options is irresponsible, especially if the patient has already tried many diets, only to succeed in the short term and fail in the long term. Albert Einstein once said, “Insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” There is simply no quick fix when it comes to most things in life — especially our health. There are, however, many things to consider when choosing a weight loss program: Risk/Benefit When I encounter a patient that has an elevated BMI, I immediately consider the very serious health risks directly associated with their weight -- diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, heart disease, infertility, stroke and back pain. A careful analysis of the risk-benefit ratio associated with dieting and weight loss is determined and an appropriate, well-balanced diet plan is created. By taking into consideration the four elements of types of foods, portions consumed, methods of food preparation and the schedule of eating, our diet plans maximize the weight loss results of an individual without compromising on adequate nutrition and general well-being. Staying Motivated All The Way to Goal Let’s face it. We live in an instant gratification society. So while losing one or two pounds a week seems reasonable, it isn’t always enough to motivate us. If after three weeks of constantly testing your willpower and discipline you have only lost three or four pounds and don’t see any visible changes to your appearance, you may get frustrated and veer off course when tempted. You are then only one binge away from gaining back what took you three weeks or more to lose. If, however, you have sustained a weight 40

JANUARY 2014

loss of 15 or more pounds in that same period of time, not only are you going to see the physical changes to your body but you are also less likely to fall into temptation. Keeping it Off, Not Just Taking it Off Rapid weight loss usually gets a bad rap because most people associate it with “crash dieting” which is simply too unsafe to justify any type of weight loss results. Prolonged exposure to a deficiency of nutrients could have devastating effects on the delicate electrolyte balance of the body. When we lose weight quickly, only to put it back on quickly, you are putting additional stress on your body and metabolism, ultimately making it harder to maintain a healthy weight. These failures also convince us that the disease of obesity is unbeatable and reinforce the lack of confidence we have in our ability to lose weight. Additionally, these diets are generally extremely low calorie and/or nutrient deficient and the results are simply not sustainable. If, however, the rapid weight loss comes from a combination of reformed habits, gained education and physiological balance, the results are transformative in the short-term and more likely to carry over into the long-term. Conquering obesity is almost always possible. The real task is finding the right path to get us there. In short, the answer is that rapid weight loss is not always the ideal but when performed in a medical environment, for short term, it is very often better than the alternative of being overweight. The unfortunate reality is that when people don’t see results quickly, they most often give up on their goals of healthy weight management and that is, without debate, very unsafe. So, if losing a pound a week hasn’t worked for you in the past, Einstein implied it’s insane to think it will in the future. Oriela Galitzer “Cosmetics took top honors as I could be a career woman and a mother simultaneously.”

Oriela, where are you from? I come from sunny South Africa. Cape Town. I grew up on a flower farm on the outskirts of Cape Town. Not a typical Jewish life at all. What is your background? I completed 12 years of schooling. My intention was to become a professional dancer. I am qualified in four dance forms — viz. ballet, tap, jazz and Spanish. From this, the love of make-up artistry began. I am also a music teacher for flute and recorder. Can you tell us all your areas of expertise? I qualified as a cosmetician in 1991 and have had many years of experience and many mentors to guide and help me progress.

HAIR CUTTING

Interview with

I offer my qualified expertise in waxing, facials, manicures, pedicures, haircuts and hairdos, sheitels, massage, tinting, make-up and more. How did you learn such a variety of disciplines and managed to be praised in all? My parents were very supportive and encouraging during my school years. I studied three musical instruments and four dance forms from the age of seven. Our South African schooling made us “all-rounders,” as besides academics, sports was compulsory and extra murals encouraged. I also became very independent at a young age as I was running a dance studio at the age of 12 years old. Due to living on a farm, I also had to travel for hours at a time to get anywhere to achieve my goals. Throughout the years I have seen a variety of cases and worked with such a vast range of situations and clients from whom I have learned and continue to learn more daily. What’s your favorite field? All my qualifications have meant a great deal to me and have made me a stronger person. But, once I married and settled down with a family, cosmetics took top honors as I could be a career woman and a mother simultaneously. By the way, I also managed to study for a BA in physiology through Unisa (the largest university in South Africa and one of the largest long-distance education institutions in the world) correspondence and I also taught aerobics in the RBS area for a few years. How many years have you been making women even more beautiful? Over twenty years and I’m still loving my profession daily. Who are your typical clients? Anyone who needs me. That is kids for haircuts from one years old and up, teens with skin problems and other needs, to woman of all ages until 90 plus for their needs. We hear your clients love you, what makes you special? I try my best to make everyone feel special and am an attentive listener. My philosophy is to do for my clients what I would want done for me. I don’t practice treatments I don’t believe in. I hope I’ve been successful. What do you like most about your job? Every client is a learning curve for work and self-improvement. Through my clients I learn a great deal of mussar that hopefully makes me a better person in my own daily life. What advice would you give to women starting or wanting to grow their small businesses? Get a good qualification. (I did a three-year degree for cosmetics.) Gain as much experience as you can through others. And, with a lot of motivation and hard work, it will all come your way. How are you enjoying your new salon location? I have been so blessed by Hashem to be able to fulfill my dream of having a “real” salon. This summer my dream was actualized and I’m loving every moment I’m in my new location. I look around every day and then pinch myself to make sure it’s not a dream. Do you have any hobbies? Yes. Over the years I have gotten into making Sorovsky crystal jewelry that I display in my salon. Oriela can be contacted at 02 999 9954. 

Do You Have an Overseas Bank Account but Have Not Yet Told the Israel Tax Authority

About It?

It May Well Be that your Final Opportunity for Voluntary Disclosure is Here!

V

By Avi Gurman, Adv (LL.M)

oluntary disclosure is a proceeding where the Israel Tax Authority allows taxpayers, who have not complied with the tax laws, to amend their reports and to state their true situation. When a taxpayer opts for this proceeding, the Israel Tax Authority undertakes not to initiate any criminal proceedings against the reporting taxpayer. Taxpayers who choose to act in accordance with this proceeding, must submit an amended report and a declaration of the truth. Ultimately, they must pay the tax which is due. (The terms and conditions for the procedure and the method of submission are publicized on the website of the Israel Tax Authority, “Voluntary Disclosure Proceeding,” April 10, 2005.) In 2011, the Israel Tax Authority published a Temporary Order pertaining to the voluntary disclosure of funds, property and capital which are held outside of Israel. The Temporary Order was given for the period of November 15, 2011-June 30, 2012. (In actual fact, an extension was granted and the Temporary Order remained in effect up until September 27, 2013.) A taxpayer who has applied for the voluntary disclosure proceeding pursuant to the Temporary Order is entitled to concessions in interest, linkage differentials, penalties and fines. Increasingly, there are signs revealing that the Israel Tax Authority is strengthening its ties with foreign tax authorities and overseas banks with the aim of obtaining information about Israelis who hold overseas bank accounts which have not been reported. Already a few months ago, the Director of the Israel Tax Authority, Mr. Moshe Asher, announced that, “The Israel Tax

Authority is seeking to reach an agreement with the USA regarding the reciprocal submission of information concerning the funds of persons who are citizens of both countries, held in the second country.” There are more and more indications that this cooperation is actually being realized, both in the ties with the USA and also in the ties with other entities of the OECD countries and beyond. Recently, various clients of our firm who possess accounts in two different Swiss banks, received letters in which the bank informed them that it had been requested to transfer information about Israelis residents who hold accounts with their bank. In addition, according to newly published reports, the American Tax Authority is putting even greater pressure on a number of banks in Switzerland, including branches of Israeli banks. Information which is submitted to the American Tax Authority may, ultimately, also reach the Israel Tax Authorities in view of the cooperation between the authorities. To the best of our understanding and in accordance with the plans which the Israel Tax Authority has published, the Israel Tax Authority intends, in the near future, to reach agreements with foreign entities. By virtue of these agreements, information will be transferred to the Israel Tax Authority, information which it did not previously possess. Once this information is transferred, the account holders will, unfortunately, be exposed to criminal proceedings. There is no doubt that heavy fines will be imposed on them. As the Biblical proverb says, “The wise man’s eyes are in his head.” It is better that one knows what’s in store, be proactive and initiate a proceeding of voluntary disclosure regarding overseas accounts. The benefits which were granted in the past, pursuant to the temporary order concerning the voluntary disclosure procedure, are no longer in effect. However, despite the lack of these benefits, there is still no doubt whatsoever that it would be preferable to contact the Israel Tax Authority and to make voluntary disclosure and not wait until, heaven forbid, it may be too late.  About the Author Avi Gurman has many years of experience in dealing in the fields of law and tax. For years, he served as a legal advisor in the service of the Israel Tax Authority, and after he left, he opened up a private firm where he currently practices. Avi Gurman serves as a lecturer of courses in tax law at the Ono Academic College and at other academic institutions. He is also the Chairman of the Tax Committee of the Israel Bar Association in Jerusalem. Additional attorneys, specializing in the field of taxation, practice at Avi Gurman’s law firm. s e c t i o n

How long have you been in the landscaping business? For the past ten years, I was called “Gardens By Design,” a landscaping and garden maintenance company in Bet Shemesh and Jerusalem. How did you become interested in landscaping? My parents made aliyah from America in 1975. In 1980, they moved to the moshav shitufi Elazar in Gush Etzion--one of the most beautiful spots in Israel. I remember my Abba hitching a flatbed wagon to the back of his tractor and taking us all for rides through the vineyards and the paths of our fathers-- the same path our father Avraham traveled on to Hebron. We passed ancient burial caves, terraces and mikvaot from the period of the Second Temple. Every centimeter was chockfull of Jewish history. I guess that’s how I got into landscaping. I can’t imagine myself doing anything else. When did you make the change from landscaping to selling artificial turf? My first installation was six years ago when artificial turf was still new. When more orders started to come in, I wasn’t happy with the quality of what was available. So, in 2010, I designed my own specs and went to China with a partner familiar with the language and culture to look for a production factory. In two years we produced and imported eight containers full of custom, high- quality turf that was such a hit that the containers were sold out before the boats even left the port. I stopped manufacturing in China when I realized that it wouldn’t work in the long term. But the experience taught me a lot about the grass industry and to how to recognize quality turf when I saw it. My next stop was the U.S. Why is artificial turf so popular? Because of the huge savings in water and time. The average lawn requires 2-3 hours of maintenance a week. The last thing people want to do after coming home from work is mow the lawn, fight with their kids to mow it (LOL) or weed. As I see it, anything that lowers the stress level at home is a good thing. I even installed artificial turf in my own yard. I love it. 46

JANUARY 2014

“The last thing people want to do after coming home from work is mow the lawn…”

How is the turf installed? First the existing lawn or plants are removed. Then we level the ground and lay down base rock covered with tarp. The turf is then cut to size, the ends glued together and secured in place with special turf “pins.” The whole installation takes one or two days to complete, depending on the surface. What’s the difference between “Evergreen” turf and everyone else’s? No dealer anywhere sells artificial turf as luxurious, lifelike, durable, good-looking and finely-crafted as we do -- including the importers from Belgium and Holland. Our turf isn’t cheap, but we guarantee outstanding value for your money. We have an exclusive dealer’s license from Synthetic Turf International, an established U.S. company with a sterling reputation. Their products meet all U.S. IPEMA and Israel Standards Institute requirements for UV resistance and safety with an eight-year manufacturer’s warranty. If you go to our website at www.evergreen-il.com, you can fill out a request form to receive a free sample swatch of our turf by mail. As soon as you hold it in your hands, you’ll understand what I’m talking about. Also on the website is a photo gallery with a great selection of “sports turf” for playgrounds, indoor patios and home play areas. For people who want something a little different, we provide a service for custom colored shapes and logos which are embedded into the turf itself. Why do people call you? I run my business the same way my parents ran their central heating business “Bayit Cham” in the 80s. It starts with striving for excellence in everything you do. Then to stand 100% behind your work and your word, without “passing the buck” on faulty equipment or mistakes. They had an amazing reputation with a fanatically loyal clientele. A tough act to follow but it’s a model I try to emulate. How can people contact you for more information? 1. By contacting the office at 02-5363510 between 9-5 SundayThursday or 2. By visiting our website at www.evergreen-il.com Both ways allow you to request a free sample swatch by mail or receive more information. You can also request a quote which is prepared at the installation site. Wishing everybody a safe, healthy winter! 

ell me a little about your company and what it does. My company includes a staff that is professional and reliable with a “can-do” attitude about everything that has to do with repairs and building. We work according to previously developed organized plans which we have built together with our clients. We are attentive and understand and know what is going on. Our work provides a very satisfying and available answer in both quality of materials and keeping to the time table. What is your advantage in working with Anglos? I have a lot of experience in renovations. I personally worked a number of years abroad in the field of construction. Thus, I know the demand and the level that these clients want and there is no doubt that this is a blessed advantage. What type of projects do you do? Private: “Villas,” “cottages,” private apartments, expansions, foundations, building extensions, etc. Businesses: We build and repair stores, restaurants, offices and businesses. What is your favorite type of job? I like to create everything that is related to building and renovating, to see the “after” and to remember the “before.” It amazes me every time anew to see what kind of change a renovation can make to a property. In which markets have you built? In Jerusalem, Bet Shemesh and the surrounding areas. What makes you different from other builders? I give just as much meaning and serious attention to the small details as to the big ones from the beginning of the renovation until the perfect end with the highest level of service and of course responsibility for my work. What’s the best advice you can give to our readers who are in the process of deciding to build or do a major renovation? We have a lot of suggestions but there is one that is very important from the beginning and that is that one must ask oneself what budget one wants to invest in the renovation. Once this answer is clear, one mustn’t deviate from that amount. After one has a budget, it is much easier to move on in the planning because, as is well-known, there is no end to the expenses in a renovation and it is a wide open market out there. That is why it is so very important that you decide on a budget before 48

you start work. The key is in the planning of a budget in advance. At what stage of the process should people contact a contractor? We recommend that one should set up a free introductory meeting without a commitment already in the planning stage so that together we can create a specific detailed plan that will be carried out according to your demands.

Where are you from? I live in Moshav Zanoach which is a moshav just behind Bet Shemesh, just off of Road 10. How many years have you been in the building industry? Over thirty years. What are your typical projects and who are your typical clients? Nowadays, I concentrate mostly on renovations or what you would call remodeling jobs. These can be small or medium-sized projects that will improve the look of your home. Just a few small changes can impact and improve the way your home looks and functions. This, of course, also increases the value of your home and makes it a more enjoyable place to live and spend your free time. Projects that I am involved in usually include additions to houses, fixing up basements and all other types of renovations. Today, most of my clients live in Beit Shemesh and are Anglos. I find it very easy to work with the Anglo olim. As a local builder, how would you describe the “avalanche” of Anglos coming to Bet Shemesh? I love the Anglos and I am very happy that so many have decided to make Beit Shemesh their home and that so many have chosen me to do their remodeling jobs. They are good people and I find them to be

very intelligent and straightforward. They usually know what they want and they don’t want to waste time playing games. If they don’t know exactly what they want, that is why I am here—to give them suggestions for the best way of doing things to get the job done to their satisfaction. Anglos don’t like to cause trouble and usually are not on my back. They just want to see that a job gets done properly and gets finished on time, which I do. They appreciate excellence so excellence is what I try to give them. What’s the advantage of being a native Israeli for this type of job? My advantage is my experience. I am a native Israeli who has been living here for many years. Because I am someone who has been in the business for a long time, I know the various types of materials available here in Israel in the construction field. Many of them are very different from the materials that are used in the United States and what my Anglo clients are used to. I therefore usually need to explain to my clients the various local options available to them. Because I can identify the quality of materials I can show my clients which materials are top grade and which are poorly made. This is a very important advantage. Due to my many years of experience, I am familiar with many suppliers and I know which ones are the least expensive. In that way I can pass my savings on to my clients.

Can you tell us some names of the Anglos you have worked for? I built for Zvi and Linda Wolicki, Daniel and Debralee Goldman, for Sheila and Reuven Schwartz, and many more. What feedback do you get from your clients? Mostly very positive. My clients are always writing me compliments and spreading their good recommendations on the social networks. What can you tell us about the level of your service? My service level is very high. I am a trustworthy contractor, honest and I keep to the time schedule. This is very important. I also am very careful with my measurements and ensure that everything is symmetrical. I also work clean which is very important to my clients.

Over 30 years building & renovating beautiful homes What have been your main challenges in this industry? I believe that any businessman’s main challenge is to keep his clients happy and content and feeling that they have gotten the “bang for their buck.” So that is my challenge. If my clients are happy, then I am happy too. What’s the main challenge for Anglos when they decide to build? The main challenge for Anglos (and most Israelis as well) is to keep the construction on schedule and to finish as fast as possible. I find that Anglos are also concerned with precision and cleanliness. Cleanliness is especially important when I am working inside of a home where people are currently living. How can people contact you to discuss their projects? The best way and the way I like the best is by calling me on my cell phone at 054-450-2248 and then making an appointment to set up a meeting. 

Yeshivas Arzei Levanon

Y

eshivas Arzei Levanon is a new yeshiva ketana opening, IY”H, for the 5774-5775 school year in Ramat Bet Shemesh, Israel. The yeshiva’s philosophy is based on the phenomenally successful educational principles employed for the past 14 years by Mesivta Shaarei Arazim in Monsey, NY. In a nutshell, the mission of Arzei Levanon is to enable each talmid to reach his highest potential in learning Torah - and getting a geshmack from it! — while developing life-skills and growing into confident, motivated and well-rounded individuals. Limudei Kodesh As with all traditional yeshiva ketanas, Arzei Levanon provides three full sedarim of learning a day. The derech ha-limud will focus on transmitting clarity, understanding and retention of the material. In morning seder, the talmidim will learn the classic “yeshivish” messechtas b’Iyun. In the afternoon and night sedorim, they will learn gemara beki’us, chumash, machshavea and halachah. The bochurim will be encouraged to develop a close kesher with our hand-picked, experienced and nurturing rebbeim. Each rebbe will make himself available to a bochur who needs him. At Arzei Levanon, these close, warm relationships are the linchpins of our program and will enable the rebbe to impart the fundamentals of learning, personal growth and beyond. Growth through Success – The Electives and Live-Skills Programs The environment of the yeshiva motivates and inspires our talmidim to develop their unique capabilities and interests by incorporating an Electives Program into the curriculum. This program enables them to experience successes in life by supporting and encouraging them to pursue their personal abilities and interests and by building their self-confidence and motivation. Every afternoon, between the morning and afternoon sedorim, the boys participate in a variety of activities and classes such as music (guitar or keyboard), woodworking, karate, gymnastics, kedushas Eretz Yisroel, computers, practical science and nature, and more. Additionally, there will also be extra-curricular undertakings and ventures to foster an appreciation of Hashem’s world around us. Arzei Levanon provides its students with the necessary skills to succeed in life. The Life-Skills Program includes practical, real-life mathematics, Hebrew reading and writing, English and public speaking training. This last program trains the bochrim to give confident, public divrei halacha and chaburahs and to be the shaliach tzibbur on a

Talmidim

reaching their potential – with a geshmack! rotation basis. Ultimately, the Life-Skills Program will empower the talmidim to confidently pursue any path in life following yeshiva they so choose.

Questions and Answers Who is the typical boy that will be attending Yeshivas Arzei Levanon? A typical student is a solid yeshiva bochur and mentch who did well in cheder/elementary-school but, with a little more attention, encouragement or motivation, could have done even better. This talmid may also have interests or talents outside the beis medrash, and, if nurtured in the right environment, can use these talents to grow in self-confidence and reach his potential as an oveid Hashem. Can you describe the Electives Program in a more detail? The Elective Program is a unique opportunity for the talmidim to develop their personal skills and talents within the framework of the yeshiva. By engaging in a range of physical, vocational and educational activities and classes (such as carpentry, music, computers, science and nature, kedushas Eretz Yisroel, physical activities, karate, and more) the boys will have the opportunity to experience successes in areas that they are passionate about. This, in turn, will promote self-confidence and develop their success in all areas of life, including learning, middos, as well as important life skills. Where does this idea come from? Is it a new concept in education? Rav Yisrael Salanter, zt”l writes in Ohr Yisrael, “A person is an indivisible unit and all of his kochohs are intertwined; success in one area will bring success to others.” Rabbi Shlomo Freifeld, zt”l, dean of the famous Sh’or Yoshuv Yeshiva in Far Rockaway, NY, constantly used this concept to motivate and to advance the growth of his talmidim. A talmid, Rabbi Zev Freundlich, honed and fine-tuned

this chinuch concept further and 14 years ago founded a yeshiva high school in Monsey, NY called Shaarei Arazim. That yeshiva has experienced phenomenal success. Arzei Levanon is proudly bringing many of these concepts to the new yeshiva in Eretz Yisroel. Are you offering bagruyot? No. This is for a few reasons. Firstly, Arzei Levanon is a yeshiva ketana, not a high school. As such, it follows the directives of the gedolim in Eretz Yisroel who request that bagruyot not be offered in the framework of the yeshiva. Additionally, the demands on the students to take a full bagrut as required by the Education Ministry would run counter to the philosophy of the yeshiva. That is to provide the students an opportunity to grow and develop their core life-skills and interests at their own pace. Finally, post-yeshiva education opportunities abound which makes studying for the bagrut during these important formative years unnecessary. Would this school be appropriate for students with learning disabilities or “special educational needs?” No. Arzei Levanon is not a special-needs school. It is geared towards the average talmid who is looking for more encouragement and excitement in his learning and his life. While the yeshiva will have educational consultants, it will not employ special-ed staff or therapists to cater to students with learning disabilities. Will classes be in English or Hebrew? All classes and shiurim will be taught in Hebrew. However, the yeshiva recognizes the unique qualities and interests of An-

glo families and students, and, as such, will employ rebbeim who are sensitive to these needs. From which communities will you be drawing students? Initially, we anticipate that the majority of students will come from the local RBS community. However, we expect interest from families anywhere in Israel and have already received applications from outside of Bet Shemesh. Where do you envision boys going after Arezei Levanon? The mission of the yeshiva is to develop confident, successful young men, who are able to pursue any path in life they wish. Through the Torah skills they will develop, we expect most will continue on to yeshiva gedolah. Love Custo The 9th Commandment Part II

By Nachum Kligman

Love Your Customer

Do more than you say. “Emor me’at va’asay harbay.”Say a little and do a lot.” (Pirkei. Avos, 1:15) The idea of delivering more than you promise can be extremely beneficial. Imagine ordering a product and receiving an additional product for free. It doesn’t have to be an expensive one. Another example is someone coming in for a massage and getting an additional foot massage for free. Everyone enjoys a free gift. A gift can be as small as a beautiful bookmark. But one should always send something extra, something that will put a smile on faces. What that free gift will be also depends on what it is you are selling. If it is an expensive item, like a crib, then why not throw in a free baby blanket? Even better, if you can find out the child’s name, personalize it.

That would really get them talking! Sold a home insurance policy? Send a beautiful mezuzah case (or even a real mezuzah, which represents the real insurance policy on your home). Be creative! Think differently! When you do the unexpected, your customers will spread the word and your business will increase. The issues of money, time and effort are factors that must be considered. Take into account the profits and amount of money you are going to make in the long-run. Word-ofmouth marketing is going to be ten times more valuable than if you just place an advertisement in a publication. For example, someone who orders shoes from you is surprised to find a new pair of socks included with the order. You get the idea.

Involve your customers in decisions. You are doing business with your clients, so consult with them. Who better to tell you what they want? Tell them what you are thinking about doing and ask their opinion. Inquire about how you can make happier customers or clients or how you can improve your business. When requesting clients’ opinions and suggestions, you are making them feel that they have real input in your business and are part of the team. Keeping Your Word

I have always found it very important to keep your word, even if it will cause you not to profit from that job or even to lose money. From a business perspective, I believe that it is important for your reputation and for showing that you are a man of your word. My wife’s great grandfather, Sigmund Adler, was in the marble floor-installation business. That business apparently did some very large jobs. One such job, which was the undoing of the company, was laying the marble floors at the (then) new Boston Public Library main library. The story was that one of Sigmund’s son, Irving, worked in the business and was responsible for doing the estimating for new jobs. When they did the estimate for the Boston Public Library, apparently Irving missed a whole floor in preparing their quotation. Of course they got the job and then realized, I am sure with horror, their mistake. Sigmund was a man of honor and finished the job but of course they lost a lot of money doing so which ultimately put his company out of business. I strongly suggest reading the book, “Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose” by Tony Hsieh. You can’t afford not to read this book. Once you do, your customer service will never be the same.

Your omer Be open and accessible

I once went to a barber shop during normal business hours and they were closed. So I called the number listed on the sign on the door and, as had happened once before, they did not answer the phone. I never went back. There is nothing more annoying that taking out time from your day to find out that the place of business you want to go to is closed. They should have left a message explaining their unexpected closure, ensuring that you would know they cared about your business. By asking for your name and number, this makes customers feel as if the owner cares about them. But this owner left no way to communicate with me and so they lost my business. Be true to your posted hours of operation. If you state you’re going to be open from 9-5, then be open from 9-5. Everyone understands when there is a special situation or if you need to run out to daven mincha. But then put a sign on your door that says, “Went to mincha, be back at 1:45 p.m.” Along the same lines, if you leave a voice-mail message that says you will return the call within 24 hours, make sure that you get back to that person within 24 hours. Respect people’s time. A couple of times a year I need to get my car serviced. This literally means losing a half day of work, plus the expense of driving in and taking a taxi home. I recently brought our van in to have the air conditioning

Do you think I recommend that garage to my friends?

fixed, along with a few smaller things. I brought the car in at about 9:30 a.m. and they told me it would be ready about 4 p.m. I couldn’t wait around for it to be ready so when they called me at 4 p.m. to tell me it was ready, I told them that I had already gone home and I would pick it up the next day. So the next morning I went in to pick it up. It was raining hard, some roads were closed and the traffic was frustrating. I finally got to the dealer at around 11 a.m. He told me that everything was fixed but that the air conditioning/heater only worked when you put it on the highest setting. If I wanted to get it to work on all the levels, then I would need to bring the car back another day at around 8 a.m. and leave it until noon. And, of course, it would cost a couple of hundred dollars more. I couldn’t believe it! The whole point was to get the air conditioning working perfectly. I lost two full mornings plus the cost of taxis and gas. He told me that since he knew I was selling the car, I could just pass the problem on to the buyer who would get it fixed -if he wanted to. I would never sell a car that did not have working air conditioning to someone, so now I needed to lose another half day of business to bring the car in again. Of course this was all min hashamayim and an opportunity to work on my emuna and patience but that doesn’t mean he needed to be the shaliach!

Bottom Line: The rule of thumb is to treat your clients better than how you would want to be treated as a customer. I’m sure you also have many instances of poor treatment from a place of business. When dealing with your customers, always keep in mind how you would want to be treated and then treat them better then what is expected.

Here is another example of poor customer service that happened to me. I went to a pharmacy to get medicine for my sick wife who was home with the kids. The pharmacy was being painted and the pharmacist, who was just sitting there, explained that he couldn’t help me now because he was closed. I could not understand this as he was sitting right there, in an open shop, and had the medicine. He went on to explain that he was doing paperwork and they were closed because the store was being painted. “I’m not asking for a new toy but for medicine for my sick wife,” I said. He refused to help me, stating that if he did it for me; he would have to do it for someone else. This negative impression will neither leave my thoughts any time soon nor will it stimulate my interest in doing business with this man’s pharmacy in the future. I was actually in shock that he would not help me. Instead, I had to drive an additional 30 minutes to get my wife’s medicine instead of being home to help her. If you were going to emulate one company when it comes to customer service, that company would be Zappos. Zappos was founded in 1999 and after just ten years was sold for $1.2 billion! Not bad for a shoe store. In truth, they sold shoes but their business was “happiness.” The culture of this company, which saw phenomenal

growth and success, was due to Tony Hsieh, one of its first investors who later became CEO. He created a company that focused to the point of absurdity on making the customer happy. Tony wrote a book about customer service. In it he tells the story of how one night he was out late with a bunch of business executives. When they finally returned to the hotel, one of his colleagues was starving for pizza but they could not find a phone book. So Tony said, “Just call Zappos and ask where you can buy a pizza.” So this person took Tony up on the challenge. Mind you, it was after midnight and Zappos does not sell pizza. They sell shoes. So the man called up Zappos and asked the employee who answered the phone where he could get a pizza in Las Vegas so late at night. The customer service agent first responded by asking, “Do you know we are an on-line clothing retailer?” When the man confirmed that he knew that, the employee said, “O.K., one moment please.” After a minute or two, the Zappos employee came back with three options — phone numbers for pizza places that were still open and which would deliver to their hotel. He even told him which one of the pizza parlors was the most highly recommended. The man hung up the phone in shock. Tony had won the challenge.

Training Young Men in Computer and Life Sciences with B.Sc. from Open University

Interview with

Rabbi Uri Broner

Yeshivat Hakidma HaTechnologit Tell us about your college. Our college specializes in vocational training for the software profession. We are now in our third year of successfully providing our students with a Torah environment and career opportunities for their future. The college has an agreement with the IDF to recruit all graduates into the various branches of the IDF’s computer infrastructure. Presently, we have three groups which joined the navy and a fourth group which joined the space program of the Ministry of Defense. The fifth group will join the air force. How about Limudei Kodesh? This year we opened Yeshiva Hakidma Hatechnologit where, in the mornings our students study limudai kodesh as preparation for the rabbinical ordination tests. In the afternoons they take courses at the Open University for a B.Sc. degree in computer science and integrated life sciences. What happens at the end of this course?

60

JANUARY 2014

At the end of this course the student is given the option to decide to join an IDF computer unit or, alternatively continue studying medicine in a short track of four years. Who is this program for? Those who are 16 and above can join the program. There is no need for a school diploma. Each student takes a computerized test that examines mental abilities and personality to see if he has what is needed in order to succeed in his studies. What about military service? Every student who studies with us receives a military deferral and later joins the army with his group. Potential students who have already completed the army or who have an exemption can join us up until they are 24. What is the daily seder? Morning prayers begin at 8:30. On Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday we finish at 18:00. On Tuesdays we finish at 14:00. What is your vision? Our vision is to turn our students into professionals, not only in coding but also in terms of responsibility, reliability and achieving targets. In addition to personal empowerment, we strengthen the students’ yiraat shamayim based on emunah and Halacha. The change in our students lasts not only for the time they learn with us and during their military service but for all of their lives. A change in thinking, lifestyle and socio-economic status will strengthen their faith and their ahavat Hashem. When should new students register? Students registered by next month will be able to attend the next spring semester and hopefully successfully finish in about three and a half years. Is there any type of financial support for students? Financial support is given by the Toronto Friends Organization and by the Ministry of Immigration and Absorption. Remaining payments are paid directly to the university. Where can people get more information? They can call me directly at 073-7057055 or visit our website at www.hakidma.com 

ust a few years ago, 18 year old Esty Segal was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a cancer that presents itself in the bones. After rigorous chemotherapy, she underwent surgery to remove the tumor in her left leg and then the necessary, yet painful process of having a knee replacement performed. Having endured many years of treatment, more operations and endless chemotherapy, she is not completely healed; yet she can walk with the aid of crutches, although she is sometimes wheelchair-bound. Esty was first introduced to Chaiyanu in 2009 through the “Chanukah — Make a Wish” project, where children with cancer have the opportunity to request any present they want for Chanukah and Chaiyanu acquires it for them. Siblings of the patient receive presents, as well. This past Chanukah, Chaiyanu volunteers hand-delivered thousands of toys and presents to over 400 families throughout Israel, giving them whatever they requested, as well as delivering presents to all the children in the oncology wards. For a teenager, battling this life-threatening disease cripples any feelings of joy and hope and has a most devastating emotional

and physical effect every single day. So, when Esty received the Chanukah present that she wished for, it warmed her heart. It gave her such joy and brought back the smiles that were long gone. For the first time since Esty became sick, she felt deep feelings of happiness and hope. In 2011, Chaiyanu sent Esty to its camp in the USA, Camp Simcha. Chaiyanu arranged for the necessary funding and medical support to ensure that Esty would enjoy a summer of long-lasting memories. In 2012, Esty participated in “The Hope Tour,” Chaiyanu’s trip to South Africa that gives 20 children with cancer an unforgettable trip to an unforgettable country. During an eleven-day excursion, they meet the wonderful people of Johannesburg and Cape Town and travel through this ruggedly handsome land and experience the Game Reserve that is so unique in Africa. It was after these life-changing experiences that Esty decided that she was going to be a volunteer for Chaiyanu. She began volunteering in the hospitals every Tuesday as part of the art activities with children, a practice she continues until today. But that was not enough for Esti! When Chaiyanu built the game room and jamboree for patients and their siblings to have a place to go and have pure fun, Esty demonstrated her extraordinary artistic skills, designing and painting all the walls in the most extraordinary and artistic way! Immediately after she completed this masterpiece, the Chaiyanu children were begging Esty to custom design their own bedrooms, each with its own special design. There are now children’s bedrooms throughout Israel with Angry Birds, Disney characters, Michael Jordan and a basketball game on the walls, to name a few. So began a most inspiring program created by a Chaiyanu cancer patient turned volunteer. Uriel, a ten year old with a very aggressive leukemia, said after he saw his “new room,” “Even when I am sick, I feel good when I look at my walls. It makes me smile, a lot of smiles!” In addition to artistic abilities, Esty is a very active volunteer for a number of families, taking the children on day trips and activities. Whether it be bowling, carting or just to go get pizza and ice cream, Esty is there and full of spirit. Rabbi Yaakov Pinsky, Director of Chaiyanu, said about Esty, “There are no words to describe Esty’s charisma and inspiration. Having been a cancer patient herself for so many years, she knows exactly what these kids are going through and what they need!! You couldn’t ask for a betJoin the Chaiyanu Family, seize ter person to be there for them. Her an opportunity to volunteer or dedication to Chaiyanu and helpprovide a service for children ing others knows no bounds. We with cancer and their families. are so extremely grateful to have Please email her on “this side of Chaiyanu!” ypinsky@chailifeline.org or Esty plans on continuing to volinfo@chaiyanu.org.il or unteer for Chaiyanu, giving her call 1-800-222211 heart and soul, and, most important, her experience and hope to children with cancer around the country. Esty’s new mission in life is to utilize her artistic abilities as well as other means to bring light into a very dark place, to help these children overcome the emotional and physical challenges they are faced with on a daily basis. May Esti and the over 400 Chaiyanu patients throughout Israel be blessed with a Refuah Shelayma! 

Do you have a dream? Did you ever dream of renovating the house or going on a relaxing family vacation? Usually these dreams remained just that – dreams. Your family budget won’t allow for such expenditures. Dreaming Of a New Coat‌ For the “Mikol Halevâ€? families, buying new clothing at a store is one such dream. They have second hand clothing and just make do with that, whatever the condition. With coats, the situation is much harder. Good-quality warm coats are hard to come by and being that they cost a small fortune, most of the children are forced to get by with a thin coat, not always in the correct size, and who cares about color, style and personal taste? Dreams Can Come True! For them, Mikol Halev opened the “Coat for Every Childâ€? program. With your help we made their dream come true! One hundred children who were used to seeing the clothing stores only from the outside, who always had to make do with hand-me-downs and second hand clothing, got a chance to make a real purchase of a good-quality, warm coat. How Does Buying a New Coat Feel? Hand in hand, mother and child walked together to real clothing store. All the clothing stood lined up, all are brand-new. They chose the right size, they debated over the color and the style and when they went up to the cashier, nobody noticed when instead of a credit card, their mother handed the man one of the hundred Mikol Halev coat-vouchers. The saleslady packaged their new coat in a bag and handed it to the child saying “Wear it well!â€? and he didn’t forget to say “Thank You!â€? to his overjoyed mother. The Thanks Goes to You‌ His mother gave us the thanks, adding to it her own appreciation to Mikol Halev. We pass the thanks along to you, dear donors -our real partners. It was only thanks to you that we were able to make this child happy and give his mother the opportunity to nurture her child. It is thanks to you that he is now protected from the wind and the rain, from the cold and frost. Thanks to you he is warm, and his heart, too, is warmed!

We, at Mikol Halev do our best to maximize every donation stretching it as much as possible for our families. After receiving donations for the coats we began negotiating with the various importers and manufacturers to get the best coats for the cheapest prices possible. After extensive research and negotiations we settled with the LEADER clothing chain. They gave us a significant discount on coats and have outlets throughout Beit Shemesh which is convenient for our families. It Doesn’t End Here‌ One of the importers we had contacted in our initial quest was TEDPY. After listening to our appeal they checked their warehouses and got back to us a few days later with the news: they had hundreds of new coats left over from last year in their warehouses and they wanted to donate them for our families! Hundreds of other families were invited to the Mikol Halev offices to choose coats from the racks that had been sorted and hung up by size and color by our devoted volunteers. Your donation led to another donation and three hundred additional children received new coats!
