Convalescent Home That’s a Five-Star Hotel Ushering a newborn into a less-thancalm world, no matter how joyful an event, often carries with it overwhelming stress for the mother, be it a first baby or an addition to many at home. Reports of research on post-natal depression show statistics of 10% of birthing mothers suffer such debilitation; but it seems that a period of rest and recovery after giving birth alleviates the likelihood of joining the group of suffering women. A long-needed solution is now at hand in Jerusalem for mothers wanting to recuperate in conditions that enable essential sleep, peace and tranquility. The prestigious five-star Ramada Hotel in Jerusalem, has now opened a convalescent home (Beit Hachlama) on premises. Beautifully-furnished rooms, spotlessly clean and smelling of freshly-changed linens, now cater for some 35 occupants (with plans to extend for up to 60), at Bikurim, a unique Hotel-Convaslescent Home at the Ramada. The bonus at Bikurim Hotel-Convalescent Home lies in having someone to take good, professional care of baby while mother catches up on rest and general recuperation. Pampering Care for Mother and Baby Changing diapers when needed, bathing, monitoring temperature, weight and bilirubin; tenderly comforting a crying baby; attending to night feeds and other requirements - all are provided with dedication in a warm, heimishe religious environment, to a clientele from all sectors of the community. Mothers from Jerusalem, Kiryat Sefer, Elad, Maaleh Adumim, Beit Shemesh and even Bnei Brak, enjoy companionship and fine service with a choice of a private room (where the husband can even stay the night and have meals for a reasonable price), room for two, or room for three. All rooms are of equally high 8

standard in terms of furnishings, service and cleanliness, with ample space for each occupant. If a mother wants to sleep, or care for her baby, she can go into a ‘private area’ by drawing a curtain, but has company with her when so desired. The Bikurim project is the brain-child of Yogev, his wife, and his investment partner, who have a dedicated sense of mission manifest in every aspect of the organization. Gourmet Meals with Mehadrin Kashrut Meals are served in an open-bar dining room. One area offers a choice of salads, the central area provides the hot part of the meal. In the morning: omelets, creamy potato pastries, shakshuka and more; at lunch: a variety of main proteins, carbohydrate and vegetable side dishes, and dessert. The drinks corner is open throughout the day and night, where mothers will also find cookies or muffins to nosh. Meat meals, for lunch, are delivered from outside caterers, under supervision of Badatz Eidah Hachareidit. Breakfast and supper are supplied by the hotel kitchen, with R’ Eliezer Mendelson, personally recommended by the kashrut administration, supervising that all products, and preparation such as checking vegetables, satisfy the Badatz Eidah HaChareidit requirements. VIP Baby The nurseries are very small, allowing individual care. A caretaker for every 7-8 babies means there is enough time to spend holding each child to pamper and calm him, as well as tendering to physical needs. Dr. Igor Weinstein, neonatologist, birthing specialist, checks daily that all is in order. Dr. Weinstein also introduced bilirubin checking into the routine.

Everything For the Mother and Baby Next to the nursery, mothers can nurse their babies in the well-equipped feeding room, in comfortable feeding chairs, with drinks, and advanced equipment from Medela. Esti Golovenzitz, the well-known qualified lactation counselor and advisor to pregnant women and mothers, accompanies the mothers. She organizes nursing workshops, and we will soon be offering her birth-preparation courses on our premises. Workshops such as jewelry-making, or napkin folding are also offered. The whole family is considered important, and gifts for babies and siblings are given when clients leave. Additional Options Staying at the hotel offers the option to have a Brit Milah in the hotel hall at affordable cost, so mother and baby avoid the need of traveling to the venue. Out of town family can stay in the hotel for Shabbat so the mother can join them. Pricing Per Day Triple Room:

Private Room:

So How Does Your Painter’s Home Look?
By Nachum Eilberg
E
ver wonder what your painter’s home looks like? Is he like the shoemaker’s kids that have no shoes, or does he actually put effort into his own home? When we first made aliyah 11 years ago, we rented a home we thought we would be in for just one year. Obviously, we thought we could live with the white sid on the walls for 52 weeks. Well, the one-year rental stretched to a second year, and again we decided to put off doing any painting. When the rental was extended to a third year, we decided it was time to paint. Not wanting to invest too much in a rental, I waited to have some left over paint from various jobs to use on my home. This was our third year in Israel, and a time when my schedule was not full. I had a few days per month without work scheduled, and took advantage of that to paint one room at a time. We were living in a two-story home, 200 meters, and over a period of several months I managed to paint the house. We were fortunate to buy a home in Jerusalem after living here for five years. The apartment we moved to was in a new neighborhood. As with all new construction (I have written about this in a previous Bizness column), it is best not to invest too much in painting the first two years, allowing time for the building to settle. When the new construction stage ended, it was time to paint. Fortunately, we were too busy with work (like the shoemaker), and had no time. Over the years, Walls R Us Painting has had the fortune of growing to a point where we are five people working full time without a break in our schedule, and as a result another year passed and we were still living with the original sid on the walls. All that changed two years ago on Chanukah. I received a call from a customer where we were due to start a week-long job that morning, asking to reschedule her job. They were recent olim and had no idea there was no school over Chanukah. She was in a panic that the painting was about to begin and her five children were going to be home. I assured her it was not a problem and immediately decided not to schedule something else, but to work on my own home. Having this full week gave me and my staff a great start, but it was not enough time to finish. It did give me the push I needed 10

and the desire to keep going. So, over the next few months we found the time needed to finish up. For the past two years we have enjoyed our painted home. This time all the colors were ones we chose. We have numerous faux finishes, for example Venetian plaster in the living room, velvet in a bathroom, rooms with stencils, circles, stripes, and murals. Even the laundry room was given attention and has four different colors to make that task as cheerful as possible. We have a mural surrounding our zecher l’churban, a mural in the background where our Shabbat candles are lit, which includes “candles” on which our family’s names are painted, as well as a mural of the Toronto skyline where my wife and I got engaged 27 years ago. We installed crown moldings, which add a tremendous amount to the room. This is something I certainly suggest to customers, but not something we offer. Installing crown moldings takes precision and expertise, and we prefer to refer you to someone who does this regularly. I have tremendous satisfaction and enjoyment from the work in my own home. Some of my customers even had the opportunity to come to our home to see examples of our work. Nachum Eilberg of Walls R Us Painting, will be happy to answer any painting related questions. Please submit questions to nachum@wallsruspainting.com and perhaps your question will be published in a future issue. Alef Alef Ca r Ga r ag e
Under the Management of Avner and Benny Michaeli
Welcome to our TEAM of EXPERTS
We’ve heard such great things about Alef Alef from their customers, here’s three examples!
Five years ago my car broke down and I had it towed to a big name garage in Yerushalayim where they told me that the turbo gear mechanism was broken and had to be replaced…for 12,000 shekel. I had the car towed to Alef Alef Garage to get a second opinion, and explained what the first garage had determined. Later that very day I received a call back from Alef Alef to come pick up my car – the reason it had stopped working was because the turbo mechanism had become disengaged, and it merely needed to be re-connected! The final bill from Alef Alef was 100 shekel! The key to a great garage is honesty and professionalism. At Alef Alef I found both, and since then have continued to be a very satisfied customer! - Baruch Bebchick
I just took our car in last week for its annual tune-up and to check out at a possible issue. Avner and his crew at Alef Alef Garage had come well-recommended and now I know why. Avner and Benny took the car right in and went to work while I waited. They explained clearly what needed to be done and answered all my questions. Everything was done without pressure and they even gave me some extra pointers and suggestions that were much appreciated. They even told me that I could come back for free just prior to my annual inspection for my car license to clean up a certain part, in order to avoid failing for an unnecessary reason. The best part of it, was not only was the service great, Alef Alef employs only Jewish labor. With the unfortunate circumstances of the current events, there is a real relief in knowing that all the workers in the garage are Jewish. Alef Alef Garage gets a definite thumbs up from me! - Ariel Siegel
We’ve been in Beit Shemesh for six years and have been to a few different mechanics. While everyone has their pluses and minuses, I feel very confident and safe with Alef Alef Car Garage. I completely trust them as they have decades of experience and are honest and reliable people. There have been times where I’ve come in with concerns or needed a quick fix and they always seem to diagnose the pro blem correctly. In fact, what can I say- before I starting using Avner I had to visit the mechanic way too often. It’s not so with Avner and sons (bli ayin harah) because they not only fix the issue temporarily, but locate the source of the problem and I find I don’t need to return for a long time. Someone happened to mention that Avner also supports a kollel in Beit Shemesh which he humbly nods about, but doesn’t like to get too much attention for. Basically when it comes to a mechanic, I need to trust and know I’m in good hands. Not many of us are car experts so I personally need to know the one fixing my car is. - Barak Schecter

Exercise and Aging:
An Important Element for the Elderly
By Jerrold Hyman
S
tarting, maintaining or projecting an exercise program for the future can be a complicated project. This is especially true for an older adult and the elderly. At any age, as we evolve physically, mentally and emotionally, we meet challenges along the way that may pose difficulties for us in any or all these areas. Physically one may incur an injury, trauma, chronic ailment or disability. Mentally, one may suffer memory loss, head trauma or other impairments. Emotionally, as time forges on and gravity wears us down, motivation, depression, living life can all take their toll. Such obstacles can be met head on and overcome, or they can get the best of us. A positive attitude and mental outlook has helped many achieve the success of aging healthily. Self-awareness, motivation, hobbies and things that make us smile and laugh are key factors. Recognizing the factors necessary to achieve positive outcomes as one ages, is most beneficial. Sometimes the children, grandchildren or even great grandchildren of elderly adults, provide the impetus that is unrecognized by the adult in question. At times these people are the motivating factor that leads elderly loved ones to an exercise program to maintain strength and vitality as they grow older. Exercise is multifaceted in this regard. It has many benefits that positively affect one’s outlook, keeping people healthy in mind, body and spirit, and allowing for vitality and ability to maintain independence as the aging process moves ahead. Many women and men enjoy exercise well into old age and receive the multiple benefits exercise has to offer. Physical activity in the form of prescribed training increases bone density, muscle mass/strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and resilience of soft tissue and associated structures, and range of motion around joints. It also assists metabolism, blood circulation, and energy system function. Movement education assists in developing and maintaining mobility and stability in general movement and coordination patterns. When one is more confident and able, and thus less reliant on others, this provides a general feeling of wellness, and decreases mental stress. In effect, this helps one’s emotional stability and well-being, and becomes a contributing piece of the complicated puzzle of one’s overall healthy ageing process. Proper exercise and positive reinforcement of movement patterns help neural pathways stay viable, allowing for daily living

to proceed less hindered as people age. As elderly people suffer decreased ability to live life in the physical domain, this loss also affects other aspects of one’s personality, and drains life away. Elderly adults understand the importance of simple movement patterns that young children and even healthy older adults don’t yet fully comprehend. When one is elderly, one does not want to lose the ability to move sideways in a kitchen, back and forth, going from a higher cabinet to reach something, to a lower cabinet, or to put something away. People want to be able to get up, lie down, roll over in bed and use their bodies to live life to the fullest. They want to continue to do the things that make them laugh, to go places, to practice hobbies, visit family and walk around. A proper, monitored exercise program can help an older or elderly adult maintain or improve participation in all of these basic and fulfilling life activities.

“Anyone Can Play, You Just Have to Push the Right Button”
Interview with
Itamar, Manager of the Ambitizia Marketing Company
Who invented the ‘Kaftor Method’ for teaching guitar? The creator of the Kaftor Method, Ahava Shmaya, was a teacher of guitar for private pupils for fifteen years, and taught guitar for youth at summer camps. After years of giving private lessons, Ahava created the Kaftor Method, which enables the participant to learn to play guitar within six sessions. What is the magic of the Kaftor Method? There’s no need to expand on the magic of guitar playing; it’s a world in itself, in which the player gives of himself and creates art for others. It’s fun, it’s exciting, it’s satisfying and gives a feeling that’s impossible to describe. The magic of the Kaftor Method is the group learning. The success of the Kaftor Method comes from experiential learning, and the student’s ability to improve his playing ability during regular lessons. A pupil who learns with a guitar teacher actually feels he is dependent on the teacher, as the teacher constantly stops and corrects him, or improves his hold. In the Kaftor Method, the pupil follows the teacher, pays attention to those next to him and how they hold the guitar, and thereby improves his hold. If he plays differently from them, he hears that his playing is different and immediately corrects while playing, without the need for the teacher to stop him and start anew. He is actually free to improve his ability to play while in the lesson, without becoming dependent on the teacher. And this is the great success of the Kaftor Method, because self-learned methods are engraved on the brain far better. Also, the Kaftor Method as it were ‘obligates’ the pupil to practice at home because of the fact that he will have to play for everyone at the next session what he has practiced at home - and if he has not practiced, he will feel uncomfortable…; take into account that at the sixth session you will have to play three songs for everyone. This obligation, together with continuous practice and the method of giving over the material, brings an amazing result - playing guitar in six sessions. How long does it take to learn with the Kaftor Method compared to private lessons? With the Kaftor Method, one can reach within 18 hours of the course at a level at which one knows the basis of the chords and how to read them and play from the notes. One knows three rhythms, three kinds of strumming, and in fact everything in order to open a book of chords and simply begin to play. In private lessons, by comparison, there is often a block caused by the constant stopping and correcting by the teacher. In a private lesson there is no obligation as in
the Kaftor Method, in which the teacher requires of each pupil to play for everyone what he has practiced during the week. How would you feel if you had to stand in front of everyone and say ‘I haven’t practiced’? Unpleasant, isn’t it? The Kaftor Method takes you into a brief system of group obligation, but at the end of it you know how to play! For what ages is it geared? Our primary target group is adults from age twenty, thirty, even fifty and sixty. The Kaftor Method generates a kind of magic - and many people who dreamed all their lives of playing guitar, and perhaps even had a few private lessons but didn’t succeed and left their guitar on the shelf together with their childhood dream, reach us with enthusiasm and come out at the end of the course knowing how to play. The magic of this method is that even the most shy open up after one lesson - as we consolidate the group with ‘group pride’; it’s not just a group that has come to learn to play, but a group in which every participant plays an integral role in the success of us all, so it is easier to open up and play with those around one. Where does the name Kaftor Method originate? The name Kaftor comes from the world of training - of coaching. The motto of the Kaftor Method is: Anyone can play; you just have to push the right button. Everything is possible; you just have to believe, train, practice, and see that it’s definitely possible. Is there anyone for whom the method is unsuitable? For someone on a level at which he already knows at least ten chords the Kaftor Method is unsuitable. How long has the Kaftor Method existed? The method in general has existed already 12 years. We are now introducing it into the chareidi framework for the first time - naturally with suitable songs, separate groups for men and women, and lessons given by professional teachers of the Kaftor Method. At present we are opening groups in Jerusalem and Beit Shemesh areas for Englishspeaking men/women. What do you enjoy most about the course? The surprise of the students when they are able to play almost anything they want by the end of the course. This is an experience beyond words. So how does one join? Call 054- 844-1217 and leave a message. An English speaker will return your call. We’ll do our best to make you feel comfortable joining the Kaftor Method, and be happy to meet you!

I Can’t Take it
Any More
Interview with Mr. Albert Kahn
J
ust in case one person suspects a personal motive for this message, I want to make it very clear that neither I nor any member of my family sells insurance. There is no personal gain for me or my family, monetarily or otherwise, from anyone paying heed to this important message. Mr. Kahn, what is your background? I grew up in N.Y. and attended the Telz Yeshiva in Cleveland and Rabbi Moshe Feinstein’s, z”l’s yeshiva. I have a degree in accounting and I built a real estate business where I own and manage properties. Where do you live? In Flatbush, New York. What prompted you to devote your energy to motivating people to get life insurance? I’ve always been involved in collecting money for widows and orphans. Only a few short years ago, a rebbe with a lifeinsurance policy to protect his family in case of a tragedy, G-d forbid, was a rarity. A friend of mine, who was a rebbe, suddenly passed away. There was no life insurance policy. I was involved in raising money so that the rebbe’s family would be able to survive. At that time it dawned on me that the tens of thousands of dollars that I was raising for a single family could purchase life insurance policies for dozens and dozens of rebbayim who couldn’t afford a policy. Shortly thereafter, I joined with Jeff Kirshblum to promote the “I CAN’T TAKE IT ANY MORE” campaign to motivate parents of children in yeshivos, businessmen and principals to implement a program in their yeshivas to insure every rebbe. It is a simple solution to a major problem, solvable with a few dollars. For a few dollars a month, you can buy term-life insurance. I’m trying to prevent a bad situation from becoming catastrophic. How much of your time do you dedicate to this mission? I dedicate myself 24/7 to this crucial mission. What are the most dramatic cases you have seen? Recently, a 27-year old Mir yeshiva man bought a life insurance policy. Just three months later, the unthinkable happened. The policy will make all the difference to his family until they are self-sufficient. What type of efforts are you making to raise awareness? I place ads in newspapers. I target chassan/kallah classes. I go to speak with every gadol and organizations such as OU, Agudah, 14
•
JANUARY 2016
day schools, yeshivas, companies and groups in general. OU already implemented a plan for its Employees and Mashgichim and Beth Medrash Govoha in Lakewood has a Plan for 1,700 of its Avreichim. I speak to anyone with Jewish workers. I encourage them to pay a part of the premium so that the cost will be shared with the employee. It’s a great Hanukkah present for a few bucks and shows the employee how much the organization really cares. Who pays for all the media coverage? Most of it is my personal money. For those who want to share in the mitzvah, I have created a non-profit organization that gives tax deductable donation receipts. Do you fundraise for the advertising campaigns? Not actively. Sometimes, at the end of my ads, I write an invitation to people to be part of this life-changing mitzvah. Are there any particular groups that you direct your message to? I do not discriminate or select any particular group. I talk to and help make programs for all groups. Do you find people saying that they have bitachon and therefore they do not need or want insurance policies? Not any more. With great Siyatah D’shmayah, I changed the whole mindset and all agree with it now. It is an act of kindness to take care of your family. If you do not do it, then it will fall on the community; therefore you should do it. What are the Gedolim saying about this effort? R. Yaakov Kamenetzky z”l agreed with it. R. Eliyashiv z”l said that this is the proper thing to do and his son-in-law, Rav Yitzchok Zilberstein, said that this is a mitzvah of pikuach nefesh. R. Moshe Feinstein z”l said that it’s a form of effort that is proper and permitted by Hashem. He said that people should get term-life insurance during the sheva brachos. The Mesilas Yesharim teaches the concept that there is nothing new. I just have to keep repeating the message over and over. So I keep saying just two things: 1. Get adequate term-life insurance for husband and wife (separate policies) and 2. I’m not in the insurance business, nor is anyone in my family. Based on a psak I received, this is an expense you can put

before calculating your ma’aser and tzedakah, if necessary. Termlife insurance can be put into your household expenses. It’s not a luxury, it’s a necessity. Give us an example of a thank you letter from families who have had to use the insurance plans? A woman wrote to me thanking me for implementing the program in the yeshiva where her husband was a Rebbe. She realized that they would need even a higher insurance amount than what the yeshiva provided, which she then bought. Then the unthinkable happened. She wrote, “I cannot describe to you how important it was for me to know that my family would be able to survive financially after my husband’s passing and not have to depend on friends, neighbors, and strangers to help us. The funds from these policies have literally saved the lives and futures of my children. There are really no words to express how important having this insurance is to us. I plead with all yeshivos that have not yet joined your campaign to do so immediately!” When should families start buying insurance? At the shevah brachos. The latest, after the first child. The earlier the better to prevent becoming uninsurable which could happen at any time. Therefore, buy as much as you can for as long a period as you can afford. Should both parents have separate policies? Absolutely. The breadwinner must have insurance for the obvious reason. The other parent should also have insurance as the breadwinner will need that money to hire extra help in the house and potentially other expenses related to the emotional well-being of the family as a result of the loss of a parent. How much insurance does a family need? I recommend people get a minimum policy of 15 times the family’s annual expenses for the breadwinner and 10 times for the non-working spouse. People should continue to carry their term-life insurance policies until the youngest child is at an age of being self-sufficient. What type of money are we talking about for a new couple getting married or for a young family with a few children? Until 35 years old, the price is very affordable. In Israel, a one million shekel policy costs about 75 shekels per month for a man and about 65 for a woman. In the US a million dollar policy costs about $25 per month. A bonus in taking a free simple blood test (in the privacy of your own home) has been that I have been able to save lives. Occasionally the blood test had revealed a serious disease which then had been treated just in time. Are some plans better than others? Look for an honest, independent broker who will shop around for the best policy from a solid company, even if that means a small commission for him. As you do not gain financially from your chessed, are you able to direct people to the best plans, brokers and companies? Yes, and of course people have no obligation to buy from them. I work with experienced professionals in the States and in Eretz Yisrael who want to be part of this amazing mitzvah. What’s the biggest obstacle you encounter from individuals or communities? Procrastination. People feel that it’s not going to happen to them. People feel they are still young and they have time. People
think it’s expensive. Fortunately, the issue of emunah and bitachon is no longer an obstacle. Some people think that they are covered by having mortgage insurance. This is good but not enough. That pays for the home. But what about the daily living expenses? Do you get involved passed the stage of promoting awareness? I review people’s policies and advise them and their brokers as to the best companies for special policies for people with medical conditions and for lower prices in general. I’m happy to speak to any group to raise awareness and to help them implement proper plans for their students, members or employees.
“If you can afford it, you should do it and if you cannot afford it, then you should definitely do it!” How can you get more people involved in being part of disseminating this crucial message? When people really connect with what I’m doing, with the reality of a tragedy, they realize that there are very few mitzvas that can accomplish what this one does with relatively little money. As one Gadol said, this is the Refuah before the Makah. If everyone would just take care of their own four amos, meaning their own family’s insurance needs and their own community’s insurance needs, that would be enough. Give us some ideas. Chasanah present. Buy them insurance for one year. The benefit includes that you are educating them on this need. If tragedy strikes, it will cost you much more than that; try to collect one million dollars for that family. Add some money to the support you are giving to your children or others “under your wing” towards a small insurance policy. This is the cheapest and most probably the most important gift you can buy your kids or grandchildren and you should never need it. How about shuls? I suggest that shuls make it “mandatory” that all members get life insurance to avoid the financial burden to the whole community when tragedy strikes. I help shuls implement such programs. What is your long term goal? My goal is that no one should get married without life insurance, which, in essence, is the kesubah, which demands financial security for your family. If you had the choice for another mitzvah mission, what would it be? Wills. I would raise the awareness for wills for the purpose of whom you want and who wants to take care of the kids should something happen to both parents. If not done, the State will decide what is best for your children. Not necessarily what you may have considered. How can people contact you for further information or advice? People can call me in the USA at 347-203-4712. My e-mail is albertkahn51@yahoo.com www.BIZNESSMAGAZINE.com

Are You Financially Literate? By Richard Gussow Certified Financial Planner
I
was surprised by the results of a new international survey on financial literacy released by S&P Ratings, Gallup, the World Bank and the Global Financial Literacy Excellence Center (GFLEC) at George Washington University. According to the survey results, Israel ranked 4th in the world in financial literacy (Sweden, Norway and Denmark were tied for 1st place). The survey showed that 68% percent of Israelis were financially literate. Compare that to the US, where only 57% of the population is financially literate. You are probably shaking your head. If you are new (or veteran) immigrants, I bet you’ve had a hard time understanding the Israeli financial system, with concepts you’ve never heard before, and in Hebrew no less. Terms like tsamud, keren hishtalmut and other items unique to Israel. By now you are probably thinking “Am I financially illiterate”? The Financial System Here is Complicated Let me reassure you. The survey measured basic concepts. I tried a few sample questions and indeed, the concepts were very basic. The financial system here is likely far more complicated that what you had in your birth country. So if you can even begin to understand the Israeli financial system, you are ahead of the game and would likely have done well in this survey. That said, even native Israelis have trouble understanding how the system here works. Tax laws are complicated, and don’t get me started on pension rules, which seem to undergo radical changes annually. Just when you think you are beginning to understand, they change the rules of the game. Foreign Citizenship Makes It Even More Complicated It gets worse when you add another citizenship to the pot, especially US citizenship. Many people in Israel once craved US citizenship, now record numbers are giving up their US citizenship. Why? Well, unlike just about any other Western country in the world, the US taxes citizens who reside abroad. It results in onerous reporting. Not only that, a US citizen who invests in a non-US mutual fund, ETF or other types of foreign investments is subject to PFIC reporting taxation, which in some cases can exceed 100% of the profit! I cannot tell you how many of my US clients had PFICs in their portfolio when they came to me. If you have an investment account with an Israeli brokerage, the odds are you have PFICs as well. Caveat Emptor! You Can’t Understand Everything On the other hand, some people really believe they understand 16

the financial system here. They think they understand everything there is to know and don’t need any assistance whatsoever. I have a client who thinks he knows everything there is to know, which leads me to believe that he only hires me to prevent him from making all the mistakes he would have made without me. Professional Advice Can Save You Lots of Money and Aggravation I bet some of you are DIYers (Do It Your Selfers). You try to manage everything on your own. For less complicated finances, that is fine and it can be a great way to learn the system without causing too much damage. However, for those of you who are older, with pension funds, investment accounts and the like, keeping your finances in order can be a daunting task. Do you really understand what your retirement benefits will be? Are you in the best possible investment vehicles to maximize your retirement pension? Is your portfolio appropriate for your lifestyle and risk appetite? I’ll bet that many of you will answer “I don’t know.” Even people who are in the financial services business cannot manage everything on their own. My firm’s clients include a senior executive of one of the major Israeli banks, and a very senior executive at a foreign bank that has a branch in Israel. If they don’t think they can do it alone, why should you? The above information is not intended to be, and does not constitute, financial advice or any other advice. It is general in nature and not specific to you. Before using this information to make an investment decision, you should seek the advice of a qualified investment advisor and undertake your own due diligence.

Interview with
Tzvi Lefkowitz, “Tzvi Air”
When we met you in 2012 you were Handyman Tzvi, then you became Handyman Tzvi Technical Services and now we see your car around town as the new and improved Tzvi Air. Tell us how have you evolved and what prompted you to change? This is Israel, the wild Middle East. And yet we’re in The King’s Palace. The only way you can make it here is to break yourself. If you want to be something, first you have to become nothing. In New York, I was a contractor with a crew of 25 builders working on a variety of projects. We wanted to be close to my family here so we moved, thinking, hey, if you can make it in New York you can make it anywhere. I started off as a handyman because it was a quick way to find jobs. Then I added Technical Services so people would understand that there is one stop shopping with me for all their home and office needs. Then finally it was time to specialize. Why air conditioning? Because the work is gratifying and the field is in a desperate need of service and installation improvements which I excel in. How do you asses if an air conditioning unit needs to be replaced and choose a proper replacement? I evaluate whether it’s worthwhile for the customer to continue to service their ailing unit or to replace it with a new one. I assess 18

which unit and which brand is going to fit their need in quality and budget. There can be four or five different units that can work on paper, but only one is going to fit the client’s requirements exactly, including the design and looks of the unit. The future service and maintenance of the system has to be well thought out. And at the end of the assessment, a customer can always rely on the fact that the service and/or installation will be top notch. What are you doing different than other A/C technicians? Tzvi Air is an HVAC company. We have teams that specialize in installation, repair and service of AC units. Since we have four vehicles, we can now be in four places at one time. We also try to complete projects in one day without troubling the customer with return visits. Our customers appreciate both the quality and the efficiency of our work. For example, a few months ago we installed a central A/C system in the Old City, a very challenging place to work. Our small cars allowed us to maneuver in very tight street conditions. The A/C was very critical for the health of the client and we managed to remove the 18-year-old unit and install a top quality Fujitsu system all in one day. Why Tzvi Air, what’s the message? I invested a lot of energy in my previous company names, so I wanted “Tzvi” to remain in the name to capitalize on my good reputation and name recognition. A tzvi is light and quick. That’s us. What is your secret to customer satisfaction in your field? Excellent question. I was hoping you would ask that. We have publicized that customer satisfaction is unconditionally guaranteed. If anything happens during installation, mainte-

nance or later on, we take full responsibility. We believe in building long term relationships. Our prices are highly competitive and if there are small things that need to be taken care of which were not within the price quoted, we don’t nickel and dime, we just take care of it. How did you get to the point that when people think “air conditioning” they immediately think of you? That’s the secret of success – reputation. That’s why we spend so much effort on pleasing our customers. People recommend us everywhere. Word of mouth can break you or make you. Who else is on your team and why did you select them? Kalman is a Beit Shemesh resident, fluent in English, Hebrew and midos. He’s diligent and dependable, has excellent integrity and is completing his A/C Technician license. He is also looking to grow with the company and understands the value of customer service and product satisfaction. Avi has been with us for two years. He brings seven years of experience in related fields. Avi is our backbone in the field, he’s a perfect installer and technician who thinks things through and knows how to get the job done in a timely manner and with a smile on his face. David is an excellent technician with many years of experience. He speaks English and Hebrew. David is detail oriented, efficient and goes beyond the call of duty to please his customers. We always get positive feedback about his work. A common complaint about air conditioner heat is that it is dry, exacerbates coughs and dries out skin. What do you recommend to combat this problem?
Works directly with Architect, Interior Designer and Contractor
For New & Renovate Homes
The air conditioners here do not dry out the air like they do in the States. In the U.S., heat is generated by furnaces causing the air to be dry. In Israel, it’s a heat pump that reverts the circulation of the Freon between the outside and inside unit, so it does not produce the dried air effect. What are the benefits of using an air conditioner over gas radiators to heat your home? Air conditioners are safer, especially if there are small children in the household. Air conditioners are also more energy efficient than radiators, making them significantly cheaper to run. How do you recommend servicing your air conditioners in winter? Winter is when you should be cleaning out the evaporator coils and the ducts, which gather layers of dust and sand over the summer. Most people only remember to have their air conditioners serviced when there is a heat wave on the forecast. Taking care of it in the winter will save a lot of hassle, not to mention improve efficiency of the units. And as always, monthly washing of air conditioning filters is a good habit to get into. How do you plan on continuing to be the most recognizable name in the industry in Beit Shemesh and Jerusalem? By continuing to provide the highest level of service which includes being able to get to all our customers on time, whenever they need us. Tel. 02-628-8282 www.TzviAir.com

Is Your Business Missing out by Not Utilizing Video? By Ahron Glazer
A
bout four years ago, small brands with small marketing budgets decided to take on the big bad world of advertising and create a new style of advertising with low cost and minimal budget videos. This wave of simple, yet unbelievably clever, videos went very viral and sparked high viewership, higher engagement and soaring sales. Companies have since tried to follow this trend; many failed, but some succeeded. K-mart, for example, succeeded in creating a comeback with their hysterically viral video, “Ship my pants”, with more than 21 million views. Today, if brands want to keep up, it’s no longer a matter of how; they need to consider video marketing as part of their overall marketing strategy. Since 2012, we have seen an influx of video making its debut in digital marketing, but now video is taking center stage for a few different reasons: I SEO: SEO is not just the description of videos anymore, but also text found within videos can be measured for keywords and tagging. II Visually appealing: Short and simple, people love watching stuff. III Story-telling: Video is a great way to express your story. Now, in 2016, what are we expecting? The answer: Video. YouTube is the most well known and most popular when it comes to video marketing, with a claim of having more than 300 hours of video uploaded every minute. One of the main reasons why YouTube is so successful is because it’s owned by Google and included among top search results for brands and keywords associated with those brands. Another popular video choice is Vimeo. Vimeo is great for more “professional” or artistic style videos. In addition, Vimeo has easy access of understanding analytics of your video’s reach in order to track and understand your audience. Other social platforms like Vine officially stepped on the scene in late 2012, but only within the last year or so started garnering popularity. People love using Vine as an outlet to display their oddities, unique talents and silly moments. However, the Viners who figured out how to tell stories in their six-second slots have found success and millions of fans and followers. 20
•
JANUARY 2016
The reason why some popular Viners have over 10 million followers is due to their creative talent to share stories. The challenge brands will face in using a platform like Vine is being able to maintain their brand narrative, while telling a story, while promoting their brand. Not an easy task… but not impossible. Some brands that have found success using Vine include Starbucks and Chrysler, T-mobile, HP and others. Regardless of your video choice, for brands looking to improve and upgrade their performance, the move must be made towards video. But don’t assume that just because you put yourself in the eyes and hands of millions on computers, smartphone screens or tablets, you will see success. Brands still need to consider that when shooting your video, the art of video marketing is to: • Share your story • Engage with your followers and fans • Don’t lose what keeps you authentic Being able to share your story in a powerful way, targeted to your audience, is the best form of advertising a brand can promote. But a compelling story is only half the equation; the other half comes with having a good marketing strategy to promote that video across digital marketing platforms: social media channels, email marketing and PR efforts. Don’t underestimate the value of an optimized video, both within the video itself and the supporting content surrounding it. Happy filming!

INSURANCE
You Are Entering the Insurance Danger Zone By Shimon Cohen The following are areas where you may have insurance — but it’s not enough.
where he was confined, the daily cost, including a battery of tests, was much, much more. Result: He had to pay thousands of dollars out of pocket.
Our tip 1. Don’t rely on the freebie! 2. Call Egert & Cohen for your Travel Insurance (we provide cover for pre-existing conditions, pregnancy up to week 36 and most important — we’ll deal with the claims!). Case #1 The son of a client of ours purchased a home recently. He took out a mortgage through the bank and they referred him to their insurance company. (The bank requires both life and structure insurance). All good and well, until… the young man had a claim which involved water damage to his own apartment and to neighbor below. And now, surprise…the policy he has does not include Third Party Liability. While this is standard on most regular structure policies, apparently the issuers of mortgage policies are only concerned about the damage to “their” apartments and certainly not about the welfare of the client. Therefore, the young man is now stuck with a large bill to cover his neighbor’s damage. Insurance policy: Yes Proper coverage: No Our tip 1. Check if your mortgage policy has cover for Third Party Damage. (If it’s through a bank-connected insurance agency… it probably doesn’t!) 2. Switch to a private insurance agent who will ensure you are properly covered. Case # 2 Our client relied on his credit card Travel Insurance for his trip to the U.S.A. Why? It’s free, of course! Unfortunately, he was hospitalized for five days for a suspected heart attack. He came back and submitted the bill to the insurers. Now the small print jumped out – there is a ceiling of $2,000 per day in case of hospitalization. In the top N.Y. hospital
Case #3 You live in an apartment block with another 15 apartments. Let’s say that you and another 70% of the tenants have Structure Insurance including cover for earthquake and natural disasters. What happens if, G-d forbid, there is an earthquake and the building is destroyed? What insurance do most people have? At present, the average premium is NIS 6,000 per sq. meter. In other words, a 100 sq. meter apartment in Rechavia is insured for NIS 600,000. Try and buy a new apartment in Rechavia for that! Our tip You can increase what’s called the “land-value” of your apartment for up to five times the original amount - so, the same apartment is now covered for NIS 3,000,000. With that, you can easily think about a new apartment! BUT! This increased land value only applies to damage caused by earthquake. Other damage (such as a fire destroying the whole building) is subject to the original amount (in our example NIS 600,000). A gezunte winter! 02-623-2546, 050-548-2192 www.egertcohen.co.il www.BIZNESSMAGAZINE.com

DENTAL CENTER
It Takes A Team By Dr. David Schlussel, DDS
W
e have all heard the age old adage “it takes a village to raise a child”. The same applies to dentistry. It takes a successful team to take care of a patient. Very often, the appearance is that your dentist alone is the one who takes care of you. While the dentist might be front and center, dentistry and the care for our patients is a team effort. Sometimes that team is comprised of many players, and sometimes a few. The members of the team consist of the primary dentist, the hygienist, dental assistant and the non-clinical team such as financial coordinators, treatment coordinators and the like. Very often, there may be more than one dentist involved in the team. There could be multiple general dentists or specialists in one or more offices. So why is a dental team better for our patients than working alone? When multiple dental professionals work together, they can draw on each other’s vast experience and add to their collective knowledge base. In addition, when two or more team members look at the same information together, a more objective decision and diagnosis can be made and then subjectively altered to fit the patients’ specific needs and concerns. When a team can cultivate the skills and knowledge to treat all the phases and levels of a patient’s care, an ideal situation has been created. A team should be able to handle simple as well as complex cases. This can range from comprehensive exams to oral hygiene care; from restorations such as tooth colored fillings and crowns, to full mouth restorations and cosmetic enhancements involving crowns, veneers and bridges on teeth or implants; from non-surgical and surgical gum treatment to oral surgery needs such as wisdom teeth extractions, bone grafting, implant placement and sinus lifts’ from simple to complex orthodontic needs. A dental team should be able to handle all of the patient’s needs. The final, and most important team member is the patient. The patient should be involved in all decision making and should have an equal say in all of his or her treatment. Our patients’ needs and concerns are always looked after first and foremost, so that they can be partners in achieving optimal oral health. We thrive on building lasting relationships while inspiring our patients to maintain a lifetime of dental health. Our constant pursuit of higher education allows us to provide our pa22

Bringing
Our Clients’ Visions to Life Interview with
Josh Kotlar,
Founder of New Edge Design What is New Edge Design and what’s the vision? New Edge is a design studio that offers branding, product design, print, website and app design as well as WordPress development and maintenance. Our vision is to offer more than just something visibly appealing but rather a branding and design experience based on high level business know-how and market strategy. Who makes up your clientele? For the last six years, we have been servicing professional service providers and ecommerce site owners as well as mobile app startups. We have also worked with some inventors and startups who came to us with an idea and needed it designed in a way that would bring their product and dream to life. In short, we have a wide range of clientele but our bottom line is beautiful design with a great user experience. How does “you get what you pay for” apply to your business? Well, we’ve had clients come to us after trying to do it the cheap way, and they landed on our doorstep six months later after a lot of headache and stress. At the same time, there are so many beautiful templates out there these days for websites that get the message across, and we do offer that option to clients who don’t have the budget for a custom site. For a low price, we can research a template together, redo some design elements and add any missing features to get a nice looking and useful site. Although this is a great option, many clients don’t want their main face to the world to look like something they bought off the shelf. No matter what type of project you are launching, saving money now may cause you more time and money pitfalls later. I advise to do your research into the right company, and do it right the first time. What are UI and UX? And why should I care? That’s a great question since most people hear those terms have no idea what they mean. In the tech industry, a UX designer, or user experience designer, is primarily concerned with how the product feels. The broad responsibility of a UX designer is to ensure that the product logically flows from one step to the next. An example project is creating an easy to use sign-up process to a platform, or creating wireframes of screens for a mobile app. UI designers, or user interface designers, are particular about how the product is laid out. They are in charge of designing each screen or page with which a user interacts in order to ensure that 24
•
JANUARY 2016
the UI visually communicates the path that a UX designer has laid out. So why should I care? When hiring a designer for a more complex project like a mobile app, or a website with a lot of user interaction, hiring a regular graphic designer may not cut it. Some graphic designers are not concerned with how screens link to each other, nor how someone interacts with the product. Instead, their focus is on crafting beautiful icons, controls, and visual elements and making use of suitable typography. What kind of ecommerce platforms have you worked with and what are some of their differences? Over the last 6 years we have worked on several ecommerce platforms that our customers were either already using, or they needed guidance on which would suit them best. The market is basically split into two different types of platforms. The first is open source platforms such as Magento and WooCommerce and the second is out of the box hosted platforms like BigCommerce, Volusion and Shopify. An open source platform like Magento is among the most popular ecommerce platforms; it’s free to use and highly scalable. At the same time, the customization of a theme is very time intensive, it’s recommended to use an expensive hosting service like Rackspace or Nexcess and you need to maintain the site on your own or hire a company. When using a platform like BigCommerce, on the other hand, the site is completely hosted and comes packed with all the features needed to run an ecommerce business. BigCommerce type customers are usually smaller to medium size businesses, that can live with the limitations but prefer the ease of mind knowing there is always customer support available. WooCommerce, which is an ecommerce plugin for WordPress, has grown in popularity over the last five years as an affordable open source option. What’s the key to making a successful app? To get your app to stand out from the crowd, you need to focus primarily on the user experience. Customers use apps as an easier way to access what your brand has to offer, so the design should always focus on the user. When a client approaches us to
Bizness Magazine

create a mobile app, they usually have over a hundred ideas and are looking to take over the market in less than six months. We all know the feeling of being excited over a great idea. My job is to help our clients focus on realistic goals in a realistic world; taking into consideration budget, time and market need. While a client’s feature list may make this product one of a kind, I always begin by writing down all his features and organizing them into launch stages, with levels of priority. My initial goal is to help my clients create what’s called an MVP or a minimal viable product. Once we have stripped away all the “extras” and gotten down to the main features which will give the product the ability to test the market, we can move on to the wire frame and design stages to bring it to life. Should every website have a mobile version? Every new client these days wants a mobile version of their website. For many websites, creating a website version for each resolution and new device would be impossible, or at least impractical. Responsive web design is the approach that suggests that design and development should respond to the user’s behavior and environment based on screen size, platform and orientation. In other words, the website should have the technology to automatically respond to the user’s preferences. This would eliminate the need for a different design and development phase for each new gadget on the market. Besides saving us from frustration, responsive web design is also best for the user. Every custom solution makes for a better user experience as we can create custom solutions for a wider range of users, on a wider range of devices. Besides the user experience and evolving range of devices, is the SEO ramifications. According to Google; it now receives over 50% of its searches from mobile devices. Therefore, websites which are responsive are more important to SEO than ever. My advice is to make sure the WordPress site you build will be responsive, using Bootstrap if possible, and always make sure it’s in the proposal. What type of products does Product Design include - is it only in the realm of digital and hi-tech or do you design actual products that you can hold in your hands? What are some examples of products you have designed? First let’s define product design. Product design is the process of creating a new product to be sold by a business to its customers. Product designers conceptualize and evaluate ideas, turning them into tangible inventions and products. The product designer’s role is to combine art, science, and technology to create new products that people can use. No matter what your product, your customers expect it not only to function well, but provide total user experience. At New Edge, we create both digital and hi-tech products such as mobile apps and back ends, as well as physical products you can eventually hold in your hand. The processes for both are very similar. First we start by understanding the concept and creating a wireframe, or storyboard, using paper and pencil. Once the client acknowledges that we are going in the right direction, we turn the sketches into a wireframe using an online tool. Depending on the type of product, digital or physical, different types of tools are used. For some it may be a wireframing program like Axure or Balsamiq, and for physical products we would use 3DS Max and Solidworks. We then apply the design aspect, which shows the product in real detail as well as color and definition. For most
product projects, my team can take a 3D design one step further and give the product life by either showing it rotating in 3D to see a 360 view, or animate it to show how it would work in real life. An example of a project we just designed recently was a building design for a new shul, which at this point is just a large dirt area on the side of a mountain with preliminary blueprints. After creating a handmade drawing of the future building, we turned it into a 360° model, and then created a 3D version to show future investors how the building would look when finished. We can do the same for the interior design as well. In short, we can help you bring any idea to life! How does your wide range of knowledge and experience with startups, project management, and ecommerce put New Edge Design in a class of its own? With years of experience in the field, I pride myself on an upper hand in the industry. Being that I personally built many digital companies of my own from the ground up, I have not only been through all stages of the process, but have lived through the process from idea to strategy to go live. My experience working with over 50 clients, as well as employees and contractors from over 10 countries while managing a large bulk of those projects, has given me the ability to see a client go from an idea to a product over and over again with success. Covering such a large spectrum of projects from ecommerce to data to design to development, to strategy and marketing has given me the ability to offer real value to my clients. We aren’t just a design company. We offer so much more than that. If you’re looking for a company that can take your new idea or existing business and bring it to the next level, you’ve come to the right place. What is the most exciting part of your business? The most exciting part of my business is bringing my clients’ visions to life. Although it could be a lengthy process, when you combine strategy, marketing, design and development into a project that doesn’t exist, or exists on a low level, seeing the end result is always very gratifying. To help a client get to where he wants to go makes the job that much more fulfilling. We don’t approach clients with a ‘who’s next’ attitude; rather every client is another part of the New Edge family. We’re looking for clients who want to work with us long term and keep us in the loop with their ups and downs throughout the lifetime of their project.

Saving Lives in
3
Tell us how United Hatzalah was born? United Hatzalah is a national organization dedicated to saving lives, with countless branches across the country. Our mission is to arrive at the scene of medical emergencies as soon as possible and provide the patient with appropriate medical help until the ambulance arrives. United Hatzalah was founded 10 years ago with the onset of the Second Lebanese War. At the time there were many different rescue groups. Not all of them were properly equipped, and there was often lack of communication between them. We saw the need to unite all these groups under a single organization which would be dedicated to unifying the level of professionalism, training and efficiency of the disparate organizations throughout Israel. The Beit Shemesh United Hatzalah branch is managed by Dovid Leff and his deputy Chaim Dreyfus. Baruch Geffen is the Halacha coordinator and works closely with Rav Ephraim Margalit and Rav Mordechai Goldstein. Who is the driving force behind United Hatzalah? The man who keeps the whole thing going is Eli Beer, a truly amazing person. He is the founder and president of United Hatzalah. The organization is directed by a very talented team, including the CEO, Moshe Teitelbaum from Ramat Beit Shemesh. How large is United Hatzalah’s network? United Hatzalah oversees approximately 3,000 volunteers in 40 locations across the country, although that number is constantly increasing as each day more and more people sign up to volunteer. In Beit Shemesh and the surrounding area we have around 80 volunteers. Each volunteer treats around 550 people a year. In recent years there have been many places which, having seen 26

Minutes Or Less
United Hatzalah’s success, asked us to help them set up our model. Some of the international locations United Hatzalah operates in are Panama, Brazil, Mexico, Australia and Jersey City. What is the extent of United Hatzalah’s operations? We operate a unit of 400 ambucycles. Our ambucycles are instrumental in helping us achieve a rapid response time of three minutes or less. We also have five ambutractors (an ambutractor is basically an ambulance in the form of a 4-wheel drive vehicle) which are extremely effective in accessing victims in hard-to-reach areas like mountain paths and desert roads. Additionally, United Hatzalah maintains a small rescue fleet on Lake Kinneret, which is known for being surprisingly dangerous. From where does the organization receive funds for ambulances, ambucycles and medical equipment? Our annual budget is approximately 40 million shekels. The majority of funds – about 70% – come from donors in chutz laaretz. The rest is donated by people in Eretz Yisrael. Now that Misrad Habriut has officially recognized United Hatzalah as a national emergency service provider we are working on getting government funding. What training is required in order to be eligible to volunteer for United Hatzalah? All volunteers must be certified EMTs. After an intensive training course, candidates need to pass practical training in 100 real-life emergency scenes. Finally, candidates must take an exam and have a personal interview before they enter active service with United Hatzalah. New volunteers are then equipped with a rescue bag and a Mirs walkie-talkie with GPS technology which they keep nearby at all times. How many calls does United Hatzalah receive a day?

Interview with
Dovid Leff,
Manager of the Beit Shemesh branch of United Hatzalah Our dispatch center (1221) receives an average of 700 calls daily from around the country. On top of this, our volunteers are often called in to assist other emergency services like Magen David Adom. How can the public take part in this mission to save lives? An educated public can save lives themselves! It is vital for parents, teachers and babysitters to learn first aid and to take regular refresher courses. United Hatzalah, together with Nurofen for Children, has launched a country-wide initiative called ‘Safe Family’ which offers a four hour first aid course completely free of charge. To find out about courses in your area, or to organize your own group of 25 people, call 052-761-6777. Secondly, during an emergency, public bystanders must make sure not to crowd around the victim or interfere with emergency personnel in any way. And of course, by donating to United Hatzalah and enabling us to acquire vital medical equipment, the public become true partners in our mission to save lives. Why call United Hatzalah? United Hatzalah has the largest network of first responders across the country. In the event of an emergency in which each second counts, we recommend dialling 1221 and our dispatcher will dispatch volunteers and an ambulance or mobile intensive care unit if necessary. In life-threatening situations it is vital to call 1221 or 101 to ensure a rapid response time. What is the cost of calling an ambulance? A call to United Hatzalah does not cost money at all. The public should be advised that United Hatzalah has worked tirelessly to ensure that if an ambulance is called and is then determined to be unnecessary, the patient will not be charged. If an ambulance is required in a lot of cases the patient can receive a refund from Kupat
Cholim. You’ve been involved with United Hatzalah for years now. What have been the most inspiring and rewarding events you witnessed? Having been involved in saving lives for the past 17 years, I’ve taken part in both challenging and joyous events. The most emotional for me is bringing a new life into the world and when a resuscitation attempt is successful. There are two instances of successful resuscitation attempts which are particularly memorable for me and give me the strength to continue with this work. A few years ago, there was an incident in which a 12-year-old girl collapsed in the street in Ramat Beit Shemesh and lost consciousness. I was one of the first responders on the scene. We worked hard to revive her but the situation seemed hopeless. Eventually we managed to stabilize her and transport her to hospital. Today, when I see her around the neighborhood, completely healthy baruch Hashem, I feel grateful that I had a part in saving her life. Another time, an older woman collapsed in the middle of her granddaughter’s wedding in a hall in the Beit Shemesh area. I was among a team of responders who managed to revive her. A few days later, when I visited her in the hospital, she was fully conscious and about to be discharged. How can our readers find out more about United Hatzalah’s activities? We have a very informative website: www.israelrescue.org. We are also on Facebook, and have both national and local Facebook pages where people can see what we’re up to on a daily basis.

Each Client is A
Masterpiece Interview with Ariella Fisher, Professional Makeup Artist
Ariella Fisher learned in the prestigious Il Mikiage Makeup School, pursuing degrees in Beauty and Master Makeup. Ariella currently specializes in Bridal and Evening Makeup. She is now expanding her knowledge by learning Fashion Makeup in Tel Aviv, which includes professional makeup for models, campaigns, runways and photoshoots.
What inspired you to become a Makeup Artist? I came from a totally different background with a degree in economics. After my divorce, I wanted some outlet to relax and to bring out my creative side. What happened was that I fell in love with makeup and turned my passion into my career. Each client of mine comes out looking gorgeous, since I put my whole heart into the makeup; each client is a masterpiece for me. What services do you provide? Do you have staff that works with you? I provide bridal makeup, evening makeup, casual makeup, shidduch makeup, makeup workshops and women’s beauty evenings which I hold from time to time on a wide range of beauty topics. I work together with a professional hair stylist for a complete beauty service. How do you make sure a kallah’s makeup stays on for the whole wedding? I make sure to tell the kallah to hydrate well the week before for supple skin, and to use moisturizer a month before the wedding for more effective application of makeup. I use very high quality products and base products for makeup. In addition, there are special techniques for the application of the makeup. The more skilled the makeup artist, the better the results will be, and long lasting makeup is an indication of this. How do you pick eye shadow colors and styles for your clients? Do you base it on their coloring and eye shape? their clothing? their preference? First of all, I like to get to know the client personally, their everyday style and preferences. Since I want my client to be happy I have to be responsive to their needs. For the ideal eye shadow, I choose the color based on eye shape, size and placement. Each 28

client is beautiful and my techniques are personally tailored to enhance beauty. What if the client requests something that you think would look awful? I would patiently explain that while her idea is a very good idea, it would look much better if we applied some of my ideas. I would of course explain the logic behind my techniques. What is the secret to making a woman feel good about her appearance? To look for the beautiful attributes and characteristics within her appearance and emphasize them, telling her how unique she is because of them. Is there really a difference between buying your makeup in a generic beauty store in the mall or at a top-of-the-line makeup company? Personally I purchase my makeup in top-of-the-line makeup companies in order to guarantee the best results. When buying makeup in generic beauty stores, on the one hand prices are lower, however you have to have some understanding of makeup to know whether the quality is good or not. I have though been surprised many times to come across good products at low cost. Has there been much change in the methods of makeup application over the past 10 years? How do you keep up to date with any changes? The makeup trends always change, not just in the past 10 years, but for thousands. Part of my training was learning techniques of makeup application from different periods of time. In order to keep up to date I make sure to acquire as much knowledge as I can through fashion websites, magazines and fashion blogs. What do you love the most about your job? I love the process of application of makeup, for me it’s art and the best part is when I hear the WOW at the end result.

SHOP Interview with owner, How was Kosher Cakery born? I was a teacher in New York at Darchei Torah in Far Rockaway and baking and cake decorating was a side hobby of mine until people started asking me to bake cakes for their special events. Friends in America who had family and friends here said there was no place to get American specialty cakes in Israel. Upon making Aliyah, I fulfilled that
need by opening Kosher Cakery. How has your business been operating until now? Until now, Kosher Cakery has been operating out of my apartment! My kitchen and most of my living room were completely taken over by the bakery. B”H, we have grown so much that it’s just not possible any more to function, prepare, package and send off orders out of my home. How did the great success of your business propel you to open your new store? It mainly goes back to my apartment. At a certain point, I realized that as the business continues to grow, my home doesn’t! With so many orders to fill, we had a need to purchase a third oven and mixer – which there was no way of fitting into my apartment. Moving to a new store will enable our staff to work more comfortably and efficiently, as a result of which we can fill the growing number of orders. What will greet customers as they walk in the doors of the Kosher Cakery Shop? Our beautifully decorated store is a bright and fun place to step into. We will have available daily our special chocolate chip cookies, gluten free peanut butter cookies, chocolatey chewy brownies, cupcakes and more. There is a cozy place to sit with available coffee and tea. Our custom made cakes are obviously only by order. We offer a big range in prices of cakes, from very affordable cakes to high-end customized ones. We also sell balloons and edible prints at our shop. Where is your store located, and what is the hechsher? Do you deliver? The store is located in the Sheinfeld Shopping Center in Beit Shemesh and we are currently under the Hashgacha of Machzikei Hadat (Belz). We have been delivering mainly to Bet Shemesh, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and the Gush Etzion area, and will continue to do so from our new location. What is your trick behind making cakes that both look stunning and taste out of this world? We can’t divulge our secrets! What people love about Kosher Cakery products is that they are a “Taste of Home”. After tasting 30

Devorah Altman baked goods of so many other bakeries, it was clear to me that I wanted to sell products that taste fresh and delicious, with no chemicals or preservatives. I guess that’s the big secret. As far as the design goes – our goal is to make the customer happy. With that in mind, the cake is specially designed for them, with an emphasis on what they love. Our professional staff puts endless amounts of time, energy and thought into the design – so it should be just right. Our goal is clear – make people feel loved and thought of. What is unique about what you offer the bakery market? How has the local Israeli market taken to this “imported” concept? I think there are two unique things about Kosher Cakery. The first is our custom made products. This is still a new concept on the Israeli market. Most of our customers are American, though Israelis are starting to get into it – and loving it! The second unique thing is our buttercream. In difference to Israeli styled whipped cream, our cakes are covered and filled with rich, delicious buttercream (available in many flavors!). Name some of the strangest requests for cakes you have received. That’s a hard one! You can check out the blog on our website – where we feature cool cakes that we make with the story behind them. I think one of the strangest was a request for an avocado cake! After some thought and brainstorming, we did manage to figure out how to make an authentic looking avocado cake. Another was a “Missoni” cake – Missoni is a designer someone was very fond of. Her mother wanted the cake to look like the classic designer pattern. That was really cool as well! Oh! My two sons love testing me – this past year, one requested a cool cake that doesn’t look like a cake. We came up with a spaghetti and meatball cake, it was pretty cool. And he loved it! - which is a huge compliment, since my sons are my biggest critics. The other one is a pancake lover – I made him a stack of pancakes (out of cake of course) with a bottle of maple syrup in midair pouring out syrup. It is called a gravity defying cake. What are some of your biggest hits? Big huge giant chocolate chip cookies – a great, cheap birthday options. tie it with a bow cake, comic birthday cake, and some others. You can find them all on our website! Looking forward to greeting you at our new store!

ELEC TR I C I A N
Sunlight Night By Ari Katz
I
cannot say if it’s my age, the oxymoronic daylight savings punishment, or cumulative fatigue, but this winter, more than any I can remember, the moment the sky goes just dark enough for Ma’ariv, about 5:02, I am completely wiped out. Not just like ‘I need a coffee or a power-nap and then get back out there’ tired; I mean like ‘give me a hoody sweatshirt, a massive plate of nachos, and a re-run of SuperBowl XXXII’ tired. (Yes, that’s the one the Broncos triumphantly defeated the Packers). Where did all my energy of the summer go? When the earliest Ma’ariv is 8:15 and I’m running in there still fired up, 12 hours after having begun work with little or no break? How come things are so different now? There are many, many factors, but the most obvious is the light itself. Few things in the world trigger our circadian rhythms the way sunlight does. Our whole nervous system is synchronized with the sun and while sunrise springs us into action, sunset signals the sudden and inexplicable need for hoodies and nachos, or some version of the two. And while artificial light can offset this rhythm, it seems futile to disregard it altogether. In these dark days of winter, to make the most of the limited amount of productive daytime, lighting becomes more important than ever. Not only for extending our day’s work beyond the early sunset, but even the relatively weak daylight, and even our moods, can be improved with a lighting upgrade. A 20% increase in the lighting quality of a warehouse, school classroom, Yeshiva, or office can quantitatively increase productivity and conversely weak lighting can drastically reduce the productivity. Many studies prove this, and a simple Google search is sufficient to find such studies; but anyone who has tended to the management of employees or students knows what a change in lighting can do to brighten a room, and more amazingly, the moods of the people using the room. I have written several articles about LED lighting and the commercial retrofitting I have been involved with. I have written about their super long life-span and savings, their non-toxic composition, their high CRI rating, and other measurable ways LED is far superior to conventional fluorescent lights. But it has occurred to me that perhaps the greatest benefit of an LED conversion lies in the subtle, yet crucial, improvement to the overall working environment. A well-lit store is one in which people feel comfortable and enjoy spending time. A well-lit Yeshiva or classroom is one where students fall asleep less and eye-strain isn’t yet another obstacle to learning. A well-lit office is one people don’t feel like they have to get out of every hour for a five-minute dose of sunshine. Any of these places, when lit properly, will maintain a “light” atmosphere and be less affected by the outside transition 34
•
JANUARY 2016
from day to night, which is essential for productivity when that night time transition comes on so early. So before analyzing why employees are always running outside, or students can’t keep their eyes open, or customers don’t linger in the store longer, make an assessment of your lighting. While these scenarios are complex in their causes, and so too their solutions, a properly lit environment enables people to feel more comfortable and thus less distracted from their tasks. It’s not the full solution, otherwise it wouldn’t be such a common problem, but it is surely an essential part of the solution, as happy customers/workers/students actually perform much better than when they are not happy and motivated solely by external rewards such as raises in salary or the promise of a good sale, or threats such as losing one’s job or failing a test. Jerry Seinfeld once quipped that if we were a type of car he would never buy it, as there seems to be no end to the maintenance we require: teeth, nails, washing, food, eight hours of sleep, temperature sensitivities, and now lighting sensitivities. So I would argue and say that our needs are not a sign of inferior quality; rather they are a sign of sophistication. Each of us is a Rolls Royce and as no owner of one would ever consider using generic oil, so too our needs are sophisticated, and yes, plenty of sleep, proper hygiene, a balanced diet, and even quality lighting are needed if we want to get the best performance out of our students, our workers, and even ourselves. Ari Katz is an expert LED light supplier. Working directly with a manufacturer, he specializes in commercial, heavyuse lighting, his lights have been used in more than 50 stores, Yeshivas, Seminaries, and private homes. To see how your office or institution can benefit from switching to LED lighting, call Ari for a free consultation and savings breakdown.

Eat Well, Be Well
-Naturally Interview with Dr. Rina Granot, founder of Yad Labriut Health Center Dr. Rina Granot made aliyah from the United States 33 years ago. She lives in Bnei Brak, and divides her time between Yerushalayim and Bnei Brak. She has a PhD in natural medicine, a Masters degree in psychotherapy and coaching, and is also a licensed fitness and Pilates instructor. Fifteen years ago, Dr. Granot established Yad Labriut, a center for training professional Health coaches, and also for counseling private clients, and supporting the public to better health, naturally. Dr. Rina, tell us a bit about what you do. Clients come to counsel with me from all over the country about healthy, tasty, easy family nutrition and solutions for childhood and seasonal illnesses, such as digestive, respiratory or skin diseases. I also have years of expertise and experience with the whole spectrum of women’s issues, from pregnancy and nursing, through creating a vibrant middle-age and menopause. Overweight, lack of appetite, chronic fatigue or pain, and many other issues where spirit, mind and emotions may be influencing the physical bodily symptoms are my forte. I specialize in interpreting blood and lab tests, and offer natural solutions for people whose test results reflect sub-clinical or fullblown health problems - such as high/low blood pressure, glucose, triglycerides & cholesterol levels, or liver, kidney, immune system imbalance. What inspired you to establish Yad Labriut Health Center? There was so much demand for my services as a naturopath and health coach, I just wasn’t able to do it all on my own. Knowing this profession is an excellent source of parnassa, and also because of the flexible hours, I thought to myself, ‘Why aren’t there more frum people working in the field?’ A group of entrepreneurs in Bnei Brak helped me establish a center for professional training. That was 15 years ago. Now we have five courses in Jerusalem and Bnei Brak as well as an amazing home-study program, which reaches people all over the world, in Hebrew and English, and lots of working graduates influencing our community, B”H. What is the difference between a nutritionist, naturopath and health coach? Nutritionists must study four years in university, and be proficient in many facts and figures, including medicines that conventional doctors prescribe; it’s not an easy option for most religious women. A naturopath’s education, on the other hand, focuses on pre36
•

vention, natural nutrition, healthy weight loss, herbs and natural methods of treatment. A health coach also focuses on the tools and steps for consistent, sustainable change in real life, including staying motivated while attaining your goals. Why is it so helpful to have a frum nutritionist or health coach? There are loads of advantages. A frum nutritionist can identify with your lifestyle. She knows all about large families, low budgets, too much good food on Shabbos and Yom Tov, as well as possible tznius issues with regards to exercising. It’s definitely important to have a health professional who understands all these details. Developing a healthy lifestyle requires working to uproot previous bad habits. A frum nutritionist understands that the basis for this is actually in the Torah – improving one’s middos. Does everyone need nutritional counseling? Most people have something about their health that warrants improvement, and we can help by illuminating the road to better health. I have accumulated a myriad of time and money-saving tips over many years of caring for my family naturally, many teaching hours, and many hours of work devoted to the health of our community. Countless well-meaning Moms have prepared brown rice for their family. Without knowing my tips, the rice is doomed for the trash, leaving in its wake a big anti-response against healthy grains in general. Had they spoken to me first, I would gladly have told them first to get the family used to brown rice in soup they love, or in a yummy stuffed pepper dish. That way the tastes and consistencies mingle, and the unfamiliar becomes similar to the known and loved until it “grows on their taste-buds.” Plus I’d have treated them to a delectable grain recipe that people gobble down and beg for seconds…Unfortunately, there is no second chance to make a first impression. Or to take that first trial bite… Please give us a success story. A family comes to mind where almost every family member desperately needed an individual program, and the pregnant Mom had no strength even to eat…a dangerous situation in itself. The father was barely home, totally stressed out, and had dangerously high blood sugar and fats. Some of the kids were overweight, others skinny, sickly, picky eaters. With great patience and attention to detail, we built an easy to follow plan which attended to the nutritional needs, schedules, budget requirements and likes and dislikes of the whole crew. Now, about eight years later, everybody’s health is fine, B”H, and the since-then married kids are devotedly raising their own families this way. My own family follows this path of health too and I find a tremendous source of nachas and gratitude in contributing to Am Yisrael through strengthening the Mitzvah of “Venishmartem me’od lenafshoteichem.” You can set up a face-to-face, phone or e-mail consultation with Dr. Rina Granot in Hebrew or English. The Thought That Counts By Rachel Factor LCSW
T
houghts are an interesting phenomenon. We can’t see them and we can’t touch them. Yet they are always there, determining our moods and influencing our behaviors. We don’t choose the initial thought that comes to mind, but we get to choose how we interpret it and if we choose to act upon it. This article’s aim is to help the reader make better choices as to which thoughts are worth listening to. Thoughts and feelings that come with a bang, a fright and a sense of urgency are usually the kind we want to let pass through. They trick us into thinking they are genuine and noteworthy. However, they hold no substance and can lead us astray. For example, Suri, a high school teacher, is about to start teaching when she is suddenly overtaken by a state of anxiety. Thoughts of worthlessness and inadequacy begin whirling around in her head. She desperately tries to push them away, but they only get stronger. It would be helpful for Suri to let these thoughts pass through. These thoughts are not helpful, and trying to push them away only makes them worse. Trying to reason with them is kind of like trying to reason with a tantruming toddler who wants every candy in the store. However, just as we believe that our toddler can get through the tantrum without heavy parental intervention, the tantrums in our minds can run their course and we can be okay too. Yaakov is davening and is struck with the thought that maybe he mispronounced a word. The thought makes him so uncomfortable that he repeats the word. This happens again, and again. Eventually davening becomes burdensome. All this started with a thought that produced such a feeling of urgency that Yaakov felt compelled to listen to it. Individuals often don’t realize that they have a choice whether or not to listen to the thought. The thought appears so real and lifelike that it just has to be true. Or some will think, “If Hashem planted this thought in my head I must be meant to follow it”, though that’s also just a thought. Helpful thoughts, which can be seen as wisdom or insight, come when we are in a quiet state of mind. They come with a sense of knowing. There is a different quality to these thoughts, and they just feel right. One cannot force wisdom to come; one only needs to trust that if one lets go it will come. Upon the need to make a decision or deal with an uncomfortable situation, it is best not to negotiate it when feeling tense. That’s kind of like using the same unhelpful thinking that is causing the unpleasant feelings to solve it. If one can wait out the uncomfortable feeling and try one’s best not to get involved with

it, one’s innate wisdom will emerge and one will know how to deal with it. Many are quicker to trust someone else’s wisdom than their own, in their feared situation. For example, Rina, a woman who often finds herself obsessing, is petrified that she “might have” said something insensitive when talking to her neighbor. All day she replays the conversation in her head trying to determine if she should apologize. Finally she calls a friend to ask her opinion on the matter. Rina feels relief that her friend feels she has nothing to worry about. However, Rina is reinforcing her inability to trust herself. I try to impart to my clients that Hashem gave them their own mind, with everything necessary to make proper decisions. This is not to say we should never ask for advice; however, people often know inside what they need to do, they just seek out reassurance because they crave a feeling of knowing for certain. In therapy, individuals will learn to become more cognizant of their thought processes, especially those preventing them from branching out of their comfort zones and facing their fears. Clients are encouraged not to act on fearful or insecure thinking, and to have the courage to see all kinds of feelings through. Over time, our goal is to see our fearful thoughts for what they are, no matter what costumes they are masquerading in. When we can postpone acting upon them, either they will fall away or our wisdom will tell us what to do next.

ALL ABOUT CONTACT LENSES A mother and daughter stood next to the service counter at our shop. They seemed to be at a loss, uncertain to be precise. ‘So what’s better? Lenses or glasses? I just can’t decide,’ the girl was saying to the branch manager. ‘Wait a minute,’ the mother said. ‘At what age do you even recommend wearing lenses?’ ‘We get asked such questions all the time,’ Einit’s optometrist, Hillel Cohen, tells us. ‘There are still people who are still afraid about putting contact lenses into their eyes, others are not willing to hear about glasses, and there are those who are simply undecided.’ So for the benefit of those of you who can’t make up your minds, we’ve submitted a list of questions to an expert in the field. Firstly, Einit’s Hillel Cohen explains to us how contact lenses work: ‘Contact lenses are like small glasses lenses which sit on the eye. The lenses sit on the cornea, which is responsible for refracting light and is next to the tear ducts. With hard lenses there is an additional effect – the tears fill the space between the tear ducts and the cornea, lubricating the surface of the cornea, especially with corneas which are affected by distortions like keratoconus, and allows exceptional vision’. There are different types of lenses, and they are administered to our clients according to their eyes and their personal needs. At Einit, we received the low down about the different options: HARD LENSES: Gas-permeable, less flexible, smaller than soft lenses (by about 10mm), recommended for far-sighted people or in special circumstances. They are known to be harder to adjust to because of the lack of softness and flexibility. There are those who hold that the risk of eye infection is lower than with soft lenses. Hard lenses is particularly good for people with dry eyes. SOFT LENSES: Flexible, soft and comfortable. Soft lenses are dome-shaped and are about 14mm wide. They are made from a special polymer which is water-permeable (between 28-79%), and rests nicely on the cornea. The factors that make soft lenses so comfortable include the build of the lens (diameter, curves, edging and more) and the materials used (prevents allergies, doesn’t dry out, stable, doesn’t rip, maintains eye’s moisture and more). There are soft lenses which are available as dailies, bi-monthly, monthly and yearly. There are even soft lenses which don’t have to be removed for a full month. Changing lenses more often reduces the risk of various eye problems. DAILY MULTIFOCALS: These are advanced lenses which are created with 3D technology, and are made from three lenses which are “stuck” on top of one another so that each lens is designated for a different vision segment - far, intermediary and near vision. DAILY CONTACT LENSES FOR PATIENTS WITH ASTIGMATISM: Until recently, only hard or monthly contact lenses were available with cylinders. Today, dailies can be made with cylinders and are also suitable for near-sightedness. MOIST LENSES: Patients with sensitivity or dryness who until now were forced to limit the amount of time they wore lenses because of discomfort, can purchase lenses with added moisture. These lenses contain polyvinyl alcohol which gives added moisture with every blink of the eye SILICON HYDROGELS: Absorb up to five times more oxygen than regular lenses, which makes them suitable for sleeping in. Silicon Hydrogels are suitable for frequent flyers, for example, or for people who take regular afternoon naps. HEALTHY LENSES FOR VISION DISTORTIONS: Keratoconus is a vision problem where the cornea is distorted and becomes like a cone. The ramifications of keratoconus is blurring of vision if it is not corrected by eyeglasses. Usage of contact lenses that are healthy for keratoconus is the best treatment. There are only a few types of contact lenses for those that suffer from keratoconus. Look out for more tips on contact lenses in the next issue of Bizness Magazine!

The Inner Child – or Who’s Running the Show? By Minda Garr, MSW
I
often say to clients that the real drama in our lives isn’t the one in our daily experience, but the one going on behind the scenes in the subconscious. We often get clues about that drama, but unless we know how to decipher them, it’s like trying to read a coded message literally, taking the words at face value. Recently, someone became enraged during a quiet conversation where differences of opinion were being discussed. This individual threatened to walk out, saying the conversation was unnecessary. Other participants were shocked into silence. Taken at face value, one could assume any number of possibilities. This person felt insulted, uncomfortable with conflict, wasn’t feeling well or was in a bad mood. Any one may have been correct. But when intense emotion is expressed, it may also indicate that a long-forgotten memory has been tapped, unconnected to momentary events. Every day, things happen that we don’t like. It may be current events, the behavior of children, or a conversation with a spouse, relative or friend. Mostly, we experience mild annoyance, but move on to the next thing calling for our attention. But sometimes our reactions are inexplicable, even to ourselves. The intensity of the emotion we are feeling – fear, hurt, anger or even rage – may be objectively out of proportion to the event that triggered it. We may find ourselves in the midst of a hurtful argument and feel like breaking something, running out the door, or just screaming. Whoever is present may be asking “Who is this person? Do I know her? What’s come over her?” If we were to investigate, we might discover that this unknown person is actually a fearful, hurt or angry child that has broken through the barriers of our consciousness, responding to an adult situation with the skill set of a 6 year old. Knowing this helped me decipher my friend’s rage – I may have been in the presence of a 6 year old having a temper tantrum. Daily, we encounter experiences of intense emotion or inexplicable behavior, even with people we don’t know. We see irritated drivers on the road, impatient people cutting lines getting on the bus or at markets, and rudeness and anger expressed towards check-out clerks or secretaries. With strangers, we are rarely motivated to try and understand their behavior. With family and friends, and mostly with ourselves, we often want to understand what is happening. What is the source of strong feelings leading to sometimes confusing behavior? To get clear about the feelings and the behavior, it is helpful to 42

look into a time and place that we are not used to examining closely. We have to go back to our childhood, not with our cognitive mind, but with our feeling mind. We have to trace back the feelings to try and understand the circumstances in which we first experienced them. When someone cuts in front of me in line and instead of feeling mildly annoyed, I am feeling enraged, and begin shouting, I can attempt to discover the source of these intense feelings. When I am calmer and away from the situation, I can close my eyes and connect to the feeling of rage. I can ask myself,“When, earlier in my life, did I feel such strong anger?” I can ask myself when anger was connected to someone moving into my personal space, or trying to get to something I wanted before I did. As I ask myself questions, images may pop into my head from my childhood. They may seem unrelated, but the feelings I recall may be very familiar. I can ask myself what thoughts or beliefs I developed then about myself or the world. There may be surprises for me, as I get in touch with beliefs that unknowingly lie behind my adult reactions to annoying situations. Getting in touch with the thoughts and beliefs of my inner child may take the intensity out of what I am now feeling. Acknowledging the child within can remind me to let the adult take back control of my life. I wouldn’t want a 6 year old managing my bank account, nor any aspect of my emotional life. The adult I am is certainly wiser and more capable. By wandering back in time to the events of my childhood, I can check out old thoughts and beliefs that no longer serve me, adjust them to match my adult perceptions, and free myself of inappropriate responses to events in my life.

CUSTOMIZING TO YOUR NEEDS
So you’ve finished planning where to put the infrastructure in your new kitchen. Now you know where the sinks will be, and where the oven, refrigerator, and cupboards will be situated. This is exactly the time to plan how to divide the storage area. The possibilities are endless. Where once our grandmothers made do with simple cupboards, in which they stored utensils and products and each time bent down, took out half the

us: Cupboards with sliding shelves, wide drawers with internal divisions; setups that take advantage of corners and ‘dead’ areas, and so on. The choice is wide and the possibilities infinite. But even so, how does one find one’s feet in all this? Planning! Make a list and detail in it everything your cupboards are going to contain: silverware, storage boxes, electrical appliances, food items, kitchen towels, and so on. Now find a place to fit each item: For example, for food products a pantry with sliding shelves; for towels and boxes – drawers; for pots and pans – a magic corner or particularly wide drawer; for your most valuable service find a place of honor in a klafa(an upper kitchen cupboard that opens upwards, comes in a choice of models and adds beauty, style and comfort!), and so forth... You’ve landed up with a small extra area and have no idea what to do with it? Don’t worry! Our consultant is sure to have an idea or two to give you. Think of the degree of accessibility you need for each and every item. Store the most useful in an easily accessible place, and vice versa. The early planning will cause you to think of all kinds of possible eventualities, and enable you to solve problems before they occur. In this way you are sure to enjoy your new kitchen much more!

A Jewel Hidden in the Hills of the Galilee Interview with
Avi Frangi,
General Manager and
Lauren Levitas,
Marketing Manager of Kitron Hotel Avi, what inspired you to open the Kitron Hotel? I was visiting in the area and fell in love with the lush scenery. It was so beautiful and serene. I thought it would be wonderful to open a hotel where people could relax and recharge in the pastoral landscape. Hi Lauren. Tell us a bit about yourself. I have an extensive background in travel and event management. I did PR for a travel agency and loved the industry so much that I ended up studying tourism. Later on I ran an event company that organized major events for large corporations, some including VIPs and diplomats. Some of the more exotic things I have done include becoming the first Jewish female game ranger for South African national parks and arranging the Miss Israel Pageant to Capetown. How is Kitron different to regular tzimmers? Kitron has 21 private cottages, or tzimmers, of different sizes, but we operate as a hotel in that we have a central dining room and a main lobby building. Kitron is the best of both worlds. The chalets are spread out over a large area which provides privacy that is often lacking in a hotel. But guests who are looking for a hotel-like atmosphere love our lobby with its cozy sitting area. And of course, we provide a full hotel service including room service and concierge. Tell us more about the different types of tzimmers available. There are 11 grand suites (Atzmon Suites) which sleep up to 10 people. Our Atzmon Suites have a master bedroom with en-suite bathroom and Jacuzzi, a further bedroom with two beds, another bathroom and a loft which is perfect for children. We have eight Tavor Suites, which comfortably accommodate a couple and five children. And our two Spa Chalets, equipped with a sauna and Jacuzzi, are ideal for couples to have a getaway. What kinds of events do you host? The privacy, luxury and beautiful surroundings make Kitron the 46

Our cottages can accommodate up to 150 guests, and we can host up to 450 guests for indoor and outdoor events. For corporate events we can provide all necessary technical elements to create your ideal event. Kitron’s large grounds and varied facilities can be used for a multitude of happenings. What do guests love about Kitron? People just can’t get enough of the stunning scenery! They love our tzimmer-hotel concept, and the fact that the grounds and chalets are so well maintained. Our delicious cuisine is very popular, and our chef is happy to customize the menu to accommodate special dietary requirements. Our religious guests appreciate our high standard of kashrus, by Harav Eliyahu Rottenberg. We also have two synagogues on premises for the convenience of our guests. Our magnificent swimming pool is a real luxury during summertime getaways. We pride ourselves on our outstanding service, and go out of our way to make sure that guests have a most memorable stay. What is there to do in the area? One of the very special things about Kitron is a jewel nestled in the hills Kitron is that it is so well situated in the of the Galilee. We arrived after a long lower Galilee area. Whether you’re look- journey to a warm welcome and a cup of coffee and pastry. We’re located only 20 minutes the duration of our stay. From the outside, the cottages look like regular away from the Kinneret where there are tzimmers, but the minute we opened tons of attractions. Natural Benefits
of Winter Fruits and Vegetables By Yaron Zaken
T
houghts of cozy heated rooms, hot chocolate, warm clothing and cuddly blankets make winter seem less bleak. But how often do we really consider the special value of the fruits and vegetables available in the winter, which are packed the essential nutrients for warding off winter ills? Below is a short list of some of the best of them; tasty and healthy, enjoy them to the full. Apples The proverbial “apple for the teacher” is a filling, ready-to-eat snack packed with some four grams of soluble fiber—17% of the Daily Value (DV) which is important for colon health and controlling blood sugar levels. A good source of immune-boosting vitamin C, apples also contain quercetin, which has anti-allergy and antihistamine properties. Avocado Many think of an avocado as a vegetable, and although it is primarily known as a fat source, it is actually a fruit- quite a healthy fruit! In a cup of sliced avocado you can find 10 grams of dietary fiber, 42 percent of your daily value of vitamin B-5, and 35 percent of your daily value of vitamin K. Avocado should be regularly enjoyed by all, also providing large doses of vitamin C and potassium, as well as healthy fat. Bananas A favorite with many children, bananas are among the healthiest all-season fruits. Rich yellow when ripe, they are delicious raw, and serve as a staple food in some countries when cooked. Banana is one of the best sources of potassium, and helps stabilize blood pressure during winter. It also improves the immune system, being packed with vitamins and fiber. 48

Beets This root vegetable contains high levels of cancer-fighting antioxidants, as well as lutein, which protects the eyes. Roast or pickle them, or treat yourself to delicious hot or cold borscht Eggplant Eggplants are also one of the best dietary sources of antioxidants, in addition to providing plenty of soluble fiber. As well as promoting regular digestion, soluble fiber contributes to healthier blood sugar and blood cholesterol levels. Eggplant salads of all type are a favorite in Israeli cuisine. Garlic Garlic enhances immunity, due to its antibacterial and antifungal properties. Garlic is such a fragrant and versatile addition to almost anything-- vegetable dishes, salads, soups, fish, chicken, pasta sauces etc. Grapefruit A great way to start any meal, grapefruit is known as a good appetite suppressant as well as contains pectin, a soluble fiber thought to slow the progression of atherosclerosis. Be cautious and consult your doctor before eating grapefruit when taking medication; interaction with liver enzymes can in some cases be harmful. Lemons Tired, nervous or anxious? Concentration and alertness on the wane? Pep yourself up with a drink of fresh lemon juice before tackling your next task. Even the scent is energizing. Adding the juice of half a lemon to a glass of water every morning supports liver and gall bladder function, and the citric acid in lemons helps break down lipids and stimulates the digestive juices, which is helpful in reducing body fat and cholesterol. Onions To get the most out of onion’s cancerfighting antioxidants, it should be eaten raw; the benefits of its phytochemicals are much lower when cooked at high heat.

Oranges Vitamin C has the benefit of staving off disease, and is essential for producing collagen, hormones and neurotransmitters. An average orange provides 70 milligrams of vitamin C, or about 78% to 93% of your daily requirement. Pears As a high-fiber fruit, a medium pear contains about six grams, which can help with blood sugar control and promote weight loss. Pears are an excellent source of vitamins C and K, and are also packed with B vitamins, calcium, magnesium, and potassium. Persimmons Persimmons are a good source of fiber and vitamin C with a wonderful bright color. Pomegranate Pomegranate is not only a treat for the eyes and palate, but for your health! Pomegranate arils (seeds) provide potassium, magnesium, fiber, and vitamins B-1, B-2, B-6, C, E, and K. Red Bell Peppers Red bell peppers are known to be a superfood. One pepper contains twice the vitamin C of an average orange, in addition to other antioxidants. Spinach Popeye probably knew nothing much about vitamins or minerals, but he was spot on about spinach belonging in a muscle-building nutrition plan. Eat it raw, or increase the fiber content by boiling it. The dark color means it’s full of phytochemicals with anti-inflammatory properties. Spinach is also a great source of calcium, and vitamins A, K, and E.
