Interview with Raphael Tolledano, world renowned wigmaker and founder of Ralph Wigs International

Raphael Tolledano is a member of the prestigious Tolledano family of Toledo, Spain. His ancestors left Spain during the Spanish Inquisition and settled in Italy. Wigmaking has become a Tolledano family trade. Raphael began as a professional wigmaker working for the celebrated Paris Opera House for eight years, where he learned under the famous Joseph Pipeno. Recently Raphael designed all of the wigs for the musical Titanic in Chicago. Raphael has designed hundreds of ZLJV WKDW KDYH EHHQ IHDWXUHG LQ QXPHURXV WKHDWULFDO SURGXFWLRQV DQG ¿OPV When and why did you open Ralph Wigs International?

I opened Ralph Wigs International 20 years ago. I wanted to infuse the market with high-quality wigs that were eye catching and had a modern touch.

She works from her home in Jerusalem. Liora coordinates wig sales in various locations throughout the country and sells to sheitel-machers, who in turn sell to their clients. We are available to attend women’s gatherings and events as well.

Where are the wigs made and sold?

Who are your clients?

Our factory is located in Palermo, Sicily. We are mainly based in New York, with branches in Israel and Japan.

Japan!? What is the market like there?

Japanese women go crazy over my wavy-haired wigs. Americans like Japanese-straight permed hair while the Japanese want wavy wigs. I guess the grass is always greener on the other side!

Tell us about your branch in Israel.

Liora is our sales manager in Israel as well as Europe. You can place orders and purchase Ralph Wigs from her directly.

My main clientele are Orthodox women, cancer patients, and as mentioned Japanese women. I also provide wigs for theatrical and film productions.

How has Ralph Wigs come to be known as the “Rolls-Royce” of wigs?

I focus on hair quality, comfort, and fashion. I like to create a tailor-made look. When a customer comes in, I see what suits her personally, and try to give her something that will make her look her absolute best. I keep up with the latest trends and incorporate them in my wigs. Everyone knows that when you buy a “Ralph Wig,” you are guaranteed to love the way you look in it.

Do you consider wig making an art or a science?

Wig making is definitely an art. You do, however, have to incorporate a science aspect too, in terms of exact measurements and specifications.

What do you take into account when making someone a new wig?

I try to match the hair as best as I can, based on color, texture, weight, etc. I also take into account the shape of the client’s face and their lifestyle in trying to match the right style with the latest fashions. Each wig contains more than one type of hair, to maximize a natural highlighted look as well as for combining styles: for example, the top may be sleek and silky, while the bottom will be wavy with a bit more body.

Is there really a difference if the hair used in a wig is European, Brazilian or Mongolian?

There are over 40 countries from which you can purchase hair. Every woman must assess what is suitable for her needs. In general people who want very light hair select European hair, while South American hair is preferred for a darker look.

How long, on average, does a Ralph wig last?

Ralph wigs will last five to ten years, depending on how often it is worn and how a client takes care of it.

What if a woman wants a wig that you think really doesn’t suit her?

My ultimate goal is for my customers to look their best. I will not sell someone something that is not good for her. In such a scenario, I would gently explain why it wouldn’t be good for her and show her other options more suitable.

What’s the key to comfort in a wig?

The construction and measurement of the cap is of the utmost importance. We use cotton caps with 100% silk tops and a lace front. When measuring the cap, I also take into account the thickness of the woman’s hair to make sure the cap fits well and is comfortable.

What if a customer is not satisfied with her custommade wig?

It’s very simple: if she doesn’t like it, she doesn’t have to buy it. My goal is not to just make money off my customers. I provide a service of making women feel great about how they look. If they won’t feel great in it, they shouldn’t buy it.

Purchasing a new wig is a considerable investment. How does your staff make a client feel more comfortable and at ease with her decision?

My policy, that the client is not obligated to keep what she ordered if she doesn’t like it, makes clients automatically feel much more comfortable. I am the only high-quality wigmaker who won’t make you keep a wig that you ordered and didn’t like.

What do you love most about your work?

I love to make women feel good about themselves. And I love to create. My favorite clients are those that come in and trust me to work my magic in making them look beautiful. I love utilizing my creative abilities and choosing for my clients the wig that will suit them best in terms of color, length, body, and style. Letter from the Editor

SHARING THE MIRACLE OF SUCCESS

Editor in Chief Ariel Topf

Dear Readers,

Business Development Yisroel Meir Simon

A common conversation I have with my clients and acquaintances is about success. As we have discussed in the past in this column, success is the result of your enthusiasm, your ability to take quick action, closing your ears to the “naysayers,” setting exciting goals and focusing on activities that will get you closer to those goals, among other factors.

Chief Designer Adam Ram

There is another element that many people fail to take into account – the people factor. Next to the guy in the mirror (yes, you), the most important variable is to attract and surround yourself with extraordinary people. Everything is about people. Every great enterprise is defined by the people behind it, whether it’s a business, a charitable organization, a school or even a family. Always be on the lookout for achievers, for high quality individuals who are searching for the right opportunity to show their worth and accomplish their own dreams. Although it’s a great merit to transform people and help them become the best they can become, you should look to associate yourself with people who already have the foundation built within: they’re always positive, they’re honest, they’re seeking to constantly improve themselves, and they value the opportunity you present to them as if their lives depend on it. You cannot do it all yourself and expect to grow. You must be able to delegate the tasks you are involved with in order to move to the next level. You need extraordinary people in every area of your business or organization. The key to attract these individuals is to be a person that these people want to be associated with. They are looking for a leader, someone with dreams, goals and a concrete plan of action. But the real secret is they want to be with someone who really cares about them. Set a goal of finding amazing people this summer and enjoy the journey! Ariel Topf ariel@biznesssmag.com

Ariel has built several companies on three continents in the fields of internet, retail, wholesale, franchising, direct sales, high-tech, employment, food manufacturing, food supplements, clothing manufacturing, pet nutrition, personal development, restaurants, advertising and publishing. 10 Secrets to a Great Family Getaway By Nicole Bem

When you’re planning your next family trip, consider renting a vacation home. Keep it local and travel to Israel’s north for a family experience everyone will love. As experienced travelers, we prefer to stay in vacation homes when going away. We enjoy this type of vacation so much, we’ve created a family getaway in Tzfat. Here’s 10 reasons why you’ll all love your time away at Villa Tiferet. 1. FEEL AT HOME Unlike a hotel room, a vacation home offers space for everyone. Villa Tiferet’s kosher kitchen is modern, large and fully equipped. If you have some work to catch up on, there’s an office area with a printer and screen. There’s also a washer/dryer, portacrib and high chair. (Just like at home!) 2. SAVE MONEY Stay in a luxurious place for less than the cost of a hotel. When you’re a group of six or more, it’s actually less expensive to stay in a vacation home than pay for several hotel rooms. And think of the extra money you’ll save by not eating out all the time. 3. BE PAMPERED LIKE ROYALTY Domed ceilings, a ruby-red chandelier and a dining table to seat 16; a splashing fountain in a courtyard surrounded by Moroccan pillows; and a living room with a fireplace and cozy couches. At Villa Tiferet you will feel like a king in a castle. For those who love to cook, the gourmet kosher kitchen is fully equipped to create a lavish banquet. 4. QUIET SECLUSION Family-style hotels are not quiet places, but Villa Tiferet is. (No need to worry about other people’s babies crying all night or being kept up by rowdy hotel guests.) When you stay in a vacation home, the place is exclusively yours. At Villa Tiferet, serenity is the key word. Relax in the courtyard, watch a sunset from the rooftop, or sit around the table and play board games with the family. 5. PRIVATE FAMILY TIME In a hotel, large families are often split up into separate hotel rooms and meals are shared alongside other guests. It can be isolating, noisy and distracting. Staying in a home such as Villa Tiferet, you will be together in a quiet, private setting. 6. CELEBRATE SHABBAT WITH KEDUSHA Daven in one of the ancient synagogues in the Old City. On your way back, listen for zemirot echoing in the cobbled streets. Shabbat in Tzfat is an uplifting, festive treat. And Villa Tiferet makes it easy, providing you with an urn, hot plate, candles, kiddush cup, bentchers and all you need for havdalah. On Shabbat day, there are games and books for the kids to enjoy while you stretch out across the courtyard pillows for that well-deserved afternoon nap. 7. EXPLORE ISRAEL’S NORTH Explore our beautiful country and make Villa Tiferet your base for the north. Ideal for families, Tzfat is near hiking trails, horseback riding, swimming in the Kinneret and much more. And we’re happy to help you plan your family vacation. 8. GO LOCAL When you’re away, you can only fully experience life in a new place when you live like a local. Shop where the locals go, including the colorful farmer’s market that’s held on Wednesdays, then enjoy a delicious home-cooked meal with your family. 9. FUN FOR THE KIDS When you stay at a hotel, parents are often compelled to keep children occupied and quiet. At Villa Tiferet, there are board games, puzzles, children’s DVDs, books and Xbox games to keep them entertained. They can also play outside in the courtyard or swing in the hammock on the large fenced roof. Since you have the place to yourself…let the kids have fun! 10. SPACE FOR EVERYONE TO RELAX If your kids are older, they’ll want time to themselves. Villa Tiferet is large, with many rooms and cozy reading nooks to curl up in as well as a quiet rooftop for chilling and star gazing. Everyone will find their own place, yet be together. Now that you know the secrets to a great family getaway, plan one! 054-311-4669 Nicole 054-311-4668 Amir www.villatiferet.com Find us on Facebook: Villa Tiferet

Tapping into Greater Emotional Satisfaction Perkins One Brain

A Good Life Awaits

S

hlomo Perkins is originally from Sharon, Massachusetts and made aliyah after receiving his degree in communication. Upon completing the army, Shlomo learned to be a One Brain Facilitator and established Perkins One Brain. As seen on his website, Shlomo has succeeded in helping his clients make the changes they were seeking. What is One Brain Therapy? First of all, One Brain is a type of guidance, facilitation and consultation. It is not technically considered “therapy.” I am a facilitator, not a therapist. This may seem like semantics, but there’s an important distinction. I do not heal someone; I make it possible for one to heal oneself. A Perkins One Brain session lasts between an hour to an hour and a half, usually tending towards the latter. It involves verbal communication, muscle testing and various simple and gentle exercises. What is the goal of the facilitation? The basic goal is to give the client a feeling of free will so he can choose how to act, think and feel. More specifically, we release emotional stress from brain and body cells. We want to take people out of “survival mode” (reacting) and put them into cognitive thinking (choosing) mode, to release the triggers that bring them into “survival mode,” to help them gain awareness of being in “survival mode,” and to teach them what to do accordingly to get out of there. 8

JUNE 2016

Can you please elaborate on the three aspects of a session: verbal communication, muscle testing and various exercises? Sure. Verbal communication helps me gather information about the client’s struggles. It also helps people to vent and feel heard. Muscle testing is a way to communicate with the subconscious. By gently pressing on someone’s muscle, I can get yes or no answers based on the rigidity or resistance of the muscle. This allows us to define the root of the problem as well as how to fix it. The answers come from one’s entire lifetime cell and brain memory. When certain topics or questions bring a pleasant emotional reaction, the muscle will be strong. When an unpleasant emotional reaction takes place, the muscle weakens. In general, people are aware of physical reactions to emotional stimuli (weakening of the knees and sweaty palms when scared, butterflies in the stomach when nervous, etc.). The body is able to display our emotions. After gathering data though speech and muscle testing, exercises are used to release the emotional stress. These can include gentle hand or eye movements, placing hands on certain parts of the body, reading short texts and various other maneuvers of this nature. Who are your clients? I have a wide range of clients. I have worked with young children through the elderly, in English and Hebrew, with both men and women. I work with anyone who wants to solve an unpleasant behavioral pattern. Such patterns include any emotional pain, fear, fear of pain, anger, depression, frustration, addiction, argumentativeness and learning disabilities. I work with anyone who feels unaccepted or unacceptable, anyone who doesn’t feel fulfilled or as if he isn’t living the life he wants, and anyone who has a physical pain or sickness. How do you work with physical symptoms? I am not a doctor, so I always emphasize that I do not replace the need or desire to visit the required professionals in any circumstance. We can always work on how one relates to

Bizness Magazine

02 999 3939

Interview with Shlomo Perkins, Founder of Perkins One-Brain

such pains or illnesses. Also, various methods subscribe to the idea of physical symptoms being a result of certain emotions or energy flow blockages. Through getting in touch with our emotions and energies and bringing them to a more pleasant place, the goal is that the body will no longer have to display symptoms. I have worked with people with sore throats, knee pain, back pain, fevers etc. This doesn’t exempt someone from treating the symptom accordingly with the appropriate professionals, but we work to treat the root or source of the issue. Do you believe that the body contains everything necessary to heal itself? To a certain extent, yes. Obviously, we all go through a normal aging process. The question is, how is our quality of life along this journey? If we are truly in tune with ourselves and all aspects of our personalities, we should feel well as we go through life. Releasing emotions and energy blockages can allow the body to “heal itself,” or in other words, to work the way it truly can. This can certainly be a process, and everyone has her own pace and starting point. How can you help people who suffer from chronic pain? Pain is used as a signal to bring us awareness of something going on inside of us that is unpleasant. We can work on discovering those emotions and thoughts and releasing them. One who feels Choice and Acceptance may still have challenges in life, but he will not have the need for the body to act in such a manner. Even if a doctor successfully manages to eradicate such symptoms (as desired), it’s still important to deal with the emotional source of such pain. What about people who engage in self-destructive behaviors like addictions? Any type of behavior that stems from a lack of choice or self-acceptance is within our jurisdiction. When would you not recommend the One Brain method? As stated earlier, we do not exempt someone with a serious symptom or illness (either physical or mental) from seeking help in a more traditional way. I only work on an emotional and an energy level. Even if treating the source helps with the

symptoms, one has to be responsible for treating the symptoms until that time comes. Can you give us an example of how you helped someone previously thought to be helpless? I don’t want to get too specific because the privacy of my clients is of utmost importance. Earlier I stated the various types of people I work with. I have helped people with a fear of heights, a fear of being in a monogamous relationship, an inability to wake up for college courses and a hatred towards family members. On my website there are testimonials. Can something that happened to someone at five years of age still affect his body when he is in his 40’s? Definitely. If one doesn’t release experiences and traumas, one continues to carry them. This is why in a Perkins One Brain session, we don’t just release stress in the present but also in the past. If we release a past stressor, then we won’t have a previous behavioral pattern to reenact in the present time. How can someone be sure she doesn’t have underlying stressors built up in her system? If someone truly feels calm, happy, tranquil, choice, oneness, acceptance, equality, enthusiasm, etc. most of the time, then most likely she or he is functioning as desired. If not (like most people), then there are clearly issues (the way one relates to external stimuli in this case) at play. Physical or emotional pain can also be a sign of built-up emotional tension. How can we teach our bodies to properly process stress, so it won’t become trapped inside? This is a process that I help a person experience in our sessions. It involves one truly being in-touch with oneself and communicating properly with one’s internal and external worlds. The exercises we do help someone use a different part of the brain. This can be a challenging transition at first, especially without help.  054-771-5292 sperkins18@gmail.com http://sperkins18.wix.com/perkins1b

Free Your Pipes

with Hi-Tech Plumbing Interview with

David Daniel

of Daled Daled Plumbing David Daniel originally learned the plumbing trade from his grandfather, as it had become a family trade. He earned his degree from Michlelet Habonim and he is certified in insulation and roofing, in addition to plumbing. What type of plumbing do you do? I can provide solutions to any type of plumbing problem. I also work with insulation and roofing (including rappelling on buildings when necessary). My main expertise is locating the source of recurrent leaks. I usually do these via my cameras - infrared or fiberscope, and I also use robots. What are the usual causes of leaks? We generally find things like rocks and nails that are stuck in pipes. A leak that comes back twice in a month is generally caused by poor infrastructure or negligence by the plumber who originally installed the plumbing… I once even found a hammer stuck in the pipe, which had been left there by the original contractor! Explain to me how you locate and extract foreign items from the pipes. After using one of our specialized cameras to locate the problem, we send in a robot that crushes up the item, thus freeing the passageway. The robot has a special joystick that we use to maneuver it. The technology is amazing: The camera is like an ultrasound and it is as if we are doing an operation on the pipes! Are there leaks that you can’t find the source of? I have never had such a situation. Who are your clients? I have many satisfied clients from across the board, including the Belzer Rebbe and his Hassidic court - I am the main plumber for all the Belzer Chassidim in Kiryat Sanz; the Karliner Rebbe; the Chief Rabbi of Israel, HaRav Yitzchak Yosef; the Kol Ya’akov Yeshiva in Bayit Vegan; and the network of Ganei Sulam. I also work on the commercial level for chains like FOX and Steimatzky. My name has 10

JUNE 2016

been spread by word of mouth as a competent plumber who can find leaks and can give high-quality work. Our clients appreciate the fact that we use only Jewish labor. Can you tell us an example of a problem you uncovered? I was called into Yeshivas Mir because there was a lot of water leaking into the Beis Midrash, causing a big disturbance. It turned out they had had security cameras installed and the electric cable was somehow strung through the plumbing! What do you enjoy most about your work? The satisfaction I get when I know that I helped someone find a solution to their problems. It is very uncomfortable for people to have a flooded house — I am happy to relieve them of such a situation! I want to add that I try to make payment easy, and accept payments when necessary. I also offer a discount to bachurei yeshivot. 

JUNE 2016

We understand that our clients are under a lot of pressure when moving and we try to be mindful of that. We always come to the home before the actual move and give very detailed instructions. In addition to that, we offer packing services - we can pack and carefully label everything in your home for you. Fragile items are wrapped carefully and clearly marked, dishes are classified as needed, etc. What tips can you give on how to experience a successful move? • Before packing, one should equip oneself in advance with: different size packing boxes, masking tape, a box-cutter knife, scissors, a thick marker, newspaper or wrapping paper and bubble wrap. • Books, CDs and DVDS should be packed in small boxes. • Glass items should be wrapped and packed with newspapers to prevent them from shattering inside the boxes. • Boxes should be labelled and numbered with a marker so they can be located quickly when arranging items in the new location. • Boxes containing glass and decorative items should be marked “Fragile”. • Potted plants should not be watered for two days before the day of the move. • Staircases should be cleared of any objects that may interfere with the movers. • If possible, park a car close to the entrance in order to save the area for the moving truck. • Before moving, it’s recommended to call the electric, water and gas utilities to read the meters. • Call your telephone, cable and internet providers to inform them of your move. What gives you the most satisfaction in your work? When the customer is satisfied that’s what makes my day! Our customers come to us from one generation to the next — they’re happy so their kids use us too! 

“We do all the organization and operation;

the customer can just sit and relax” Interview with Levi Kern CEO of Best Forward International

Best Forwarding International specializes in exports and imports by sea, air and land. They specialize in kosher food imports and exports to and from Israel and worldwide, and deal with the authorities: FDA, the Health Ministry and the Israeli Standard Institution (ISI). Best Forwarding International also specializes in moving apartments from and to Israel and internationally, handling the professional packing, insurance, transporting, shipping and freight. How did Best Forward International begin? I gained experience as CEO of international companies based in Israel. I opened Best Forwarding International by myself and I made it grow to what we are today. What are some foods and products you import/export? Matzah and daled minim are examples of items sent through us. We attend all types of international exhibitions to continuously improve and understand our clients’ businesses. We recently imported the ceramics for the newly-renovated Belz mikvah in Jerusalem. We have also sent revolving doors to mikvahs around the world. Which countries does Best Forwarding International import/ export to? We will ship anywhere in the world, but mainly specialize in the U.S. Canada, UK, Belgium and France. What type of insurance is offered? Theft, loss and/or damage insurance. We have great relationships with top international insurance companies that have been cultivated for many years, significantly benefitting our clients. Do you take care of all necessary customs and taxes on cargo? We are very organized with paperwork and take great care ensuring shipments reach the customer complete, with no loose ends. For example, sometimes a customer wants us to organize a container or arrange a flight. We organize storage and loading, send necessary paperwork to customs in Israel and then release the shipment through customs abroad with all the corresponding bureaucracy. Basically, every aspect of the process is handled by a different supplier, and that’s where our expertise comes through for our clients. We are their one-stop-shop, resulting in a hassle-free and low cost experience. We

do all the organization and operation; the customer can just sit and relax. Which is why our slogan is: You choose Best and we do the rest! What type of packing services do you provide? Can you assemble or disassemble furniture? We provide professional packers and sell packing materials as requested. For bigger moves we hire professional carpenters and electricians if requested. We try to work only with Jewish companies wherever possible, from the transport in Israel to the transport in chul. When taking other workers, the work is always under Jewish supervision Does the cost of shipping a container justify moving the contents of a home overseas? We always try to help the customer with good advice. Sometimes we explain that to import a new fridge from abroad might be cheaper, but if it gets broken they may pay much more to fix it, and they won’t have a guarantee. Sometimes, instead of buying new furniture in chul and then shipping it, they should buy new in Israel. Why use Best Forwarding International for overseas shipping instead of the post office? If more than one box or over 50 kg is being shipped, we buy space on passenger planes and do all arrangements for you, which is why we are much cheaper. Sometimes we send people to the post office if we know that it will be cheaper for the customer. Who is your staff in Israel? Do you work with other moving companies when necessary? Our policy is to work with competitors when it helps our clients’ needs. We work in cooperation with other shipping companies. I remember people that called us for a quote and shipped with another company. In the end, we did the shipment for the other company, so we all had a good laugh. Why do your clients choose Best Forwarding International? Our goal is to please the customer, provide excellent service, and to make sure their possessions are in the same condition when they arrive as when they left their house. Our company has complete transparency, everything is explained in detail. Sometimes people can sit down with me for two hours and tell me how emotionally taxing their move abroad was for them. It’s all part of our service. We adopted a method so the customer knows exactly how many meters they have. Our truck measures the surface in front of the customer. No surprises. You pay only for what you actually send. A few weeks ago someone called for a quote and asked if we could come to his apartment to estimate how many cubic meters it has. I estimated he had 3.5 meters which would cost $250 per meter. After I left he called another company and used the assessment that I gave him, and they quoted him $200 per meter. Of course, he went with them because they were cheaper. But when they actually turned up, they charged him according to eight meters!!! The beautiful part in all this was that he called back to tell me he realized that I was cheaper and trustworthy. With Best Forwarding International, the customer is a true partner throughout each part of the process and they see what we do and how we quote each delivery option separately. This earns us our customer’s full trust. 

On the

Road...

Interview with Oriel

Pikel,

owner of Lechol Makom B’Yisrael, Oriel car services What types of services do you offer? We provide transportation for any and all types of occasions such as tiyulim, family events, special occasions, sports events, business conferences, and trips to the airport. We have our own 20-seater minibus and are in the process of acquiring a smaller 14-seater. We work with reputable companies to rent buses and additional vehicles including wheelchair-accessible vehicles and bulletproof windows when needed. All our cars are clean, neat and air-conditioned. We provide transportation service all over the country. Do you have an office your drivers can turn to when needed? Yes, all the vehicles are equipped with a GPS system hooked up to our office. This way we can see exactly where the drivers are and help them out if they are lost or otherwise in trouble. What makes for a smooth transportation process? First of all, from the start we make sure to ask all the necessary questions to avoid any misunderstandings. We make sure in advance to find out the exact destination, stops on the way, approximate waiting time (when relevant). When we are working with pick-up from the airport, we make sure to take down the flight number so we can keep updated on actual arrival time. I make sure that the driver and customer have each other’s phone numbers before the travelling begins. We always send our drivers 15 minutes earlier than the agreed upon time to leave room for the unexpected. All of our drivers are not only honest and reliable but are flexible and understanding as well. When the unexpected happens, we will make the effort to accommodate as best as we can. Whether it’s an additional stop, a change in plans or another bathroom break, we strive to make the trip as comfortable as can be for you and your family. Can you give us some stories of satisfied clients? A family whose son was unfortunately killed in the 14

JUNE 2016

Second Lebanon War was making a memorial for him at the Tzrifin army base. They raised money to have a sefer Torah refurbished in his memory. The entire trip was very moving for the whole family and they were extremely appreciative of our understanding, flexibility (including a 45 minute unanticipated stop) and pleasantness during such a sensitive time. Another time we were taking a family from Gush Etzion to the air-force base by Mitzpe Ramon. They were attending their son’s graduation ceremony after having completed a course to promote his rank to officer. The catch was that this officer would be getting married the next day, so the family was understandably under pressure that everything should work out exactly as planned. Baruch Hashem, we were able to deliver the exact service they needed and the family was very satisfied. Have you ever had a situation where one of your vehicles broke down or got stuck? Just recently we took some yeshiva bochurim to a hike in an air-force training camp in the Negev. We had permission to use the area until 12. The hike they were going on was in an area called “Har Masor” — called that because the shape of the mountain resembles a saw. When we arrived I found a shady spot to park the car to wait for the bochurim. I was told to move the car as it was next to a mountain of rocks that could fall down on the car, G-d forbid. The only problem was that the place where I was told to move was not sturdy ground. The minibus sank into the ground and I was stuck. I had no recourse but to order a jeep to come bail us out. In the meantime, the bochurim finished their tiyul and found a better attraction! They immediately got to work trying to dig me out of the sand. They started digging all around, while shouting to me to step on the gas and attempt to get out every now and then. After an hour of work, we succeeded! The boys seemed to have enjoyed it more than the challenging hike they were on! To book your transportation, please call 053-334-5531 

Is Your Camera Obsolete? By Moshe Benaim of MB Photography

I

f you own a smartphone, you’re likely part of, or at least aware of, the heated debate about whether or not you still need a plain ol’ camera. With strong contenders on both sides, many people have passionate opinions on the issue. Small camera sales have steadily decreased as iPhones and the like have increased in sales. Do you really need both? Have beloved point and shoot cameras become obsolete? Are there any advantages to keeping your old camera? Is your smartphone just as good? You’ve probably entertained some or all of these questions. In case you’re not sure and you haven’t formed your own opinion yet, this is a rundown of some of the main features of most point and shoot cameras that may, perhaps, make them worthwhile for you to hold onto. 1. In general, most point and shoot (P&S) cameras have higher megapixels than standard phone cameras. For most pictures, this won’t matter, as a picture on a screen only needs about three mps to look perfect, and most phones have that. If you are printing lager pictures, you’ll need a higher resolution, or if you’re cropping parts of the picture you’ll want higher resolution as well. Nine mps are usually enough even for those, so all the newer cameras with super high mps are a bit of a gimmick, unless there’s a reason you need to get that small. The best phone cameras often have as high if not higher mps than the lower quality small cameras. 2. Small P&S cameras have larger sensors, which allow in more light and allow for greater precision in the photo. For the most part, a good phone camera will give just as good results. In fact, all sorts of anecdotal evidence points to not being able to tell which photo comes from which camera. Specific cases might warrant a small camera over a phone, such as where light is limited, like night time photos, because you’ll get more light and a nicer photo. There are apps you can download on your phone to edit and improve the image, but they don’t beat the real thing. 3. Optical zoom is something oft-discussed. On a phone you can only get digital zoom, which is not as precise. Again, this isn’t something that a layman will generally

notice or care about, and most people clicking away with their phones are not aiming to get the perfect photo of a dramatic event. If you are, you would probably be the one toting a small camera anyway. 4. P&S cameras come with all sorts of extra settings you can use to get exactly the photo you want- black and white, toy effect and more. For split-second photos where you don’t really need it, these are unnecessary, and a phone is great. For a more glorified photographic experience, these are fun and can net really special pictures. Many phone camera enthusiasts will say these are just overload that no one uses anyway, and in fact most camera salespeople won’t even be able to explain how to use them properly. If you can take the time to figure them out, you’ll probably enjoy using them. 5. Shutter speed on small cameras means you can get the picture you want the second you want it, and you can get your child in action without blurry photo quality. The truth is, even most P&S cameras can’t really get you that, but a dslr can. A quality dslr camera is expensive, but if you enjoy taking good pictures, it’s probably worth the money. 6. If you take pictures often, you’ll drain the battery from your phone camera pretty quickly. But weigh this vs. the ease and convenience of having the phone camera on you at all times. Many people won’t carry both. What should you take away from all of this? It really depends what you use your camera for when deciding what you need. For taking pictures and developing standard size photos, or for sharing online with friends, phone cameras are probably the better and easier choice. The photos go straight to your email, whatsapp or any other application you use online seamlessly, with beautiful quality. For more professional results, with greater setup time and if you use your camera frequently, stick with your point and shoot. And for the most reliable and expert photos, where you can control all of the factors, invest in a dslr, which will give you photos you’ll love forever.  050-762-0049 mbfotographer@gmail.com www.BIZNESSMAGAZINE.com

Interview with Jordana Staiman, M.S. CCC-SLP Speech Language Pathologist

Empowering Mothers,

Enabling Children Jordana Staiman is a Jerusalem-based American trained and licensed speech language pathologist with 14 years’ experience. She works with children from preschool through adolescence and has worked in many different settings. Jordana is currently working in special education schools, and supervising speech therapy students at the Master’s degree level. Jordana is a certified Hanen provider. Why did you go into speech therapy? I love working with children! I’ve been working with them since I was young. Enabling children to express themselves and aid in their development, brings me much satisfaction personally and professionally. What special course are you offering this July? I am offering an adapted ‘It Takes Two to Talk’ course from the world-renowned Hanen Centre. The Hanen Centre is a non-profit organization which develops programs, workshops, and resources to help parents and professionals promote children’s language development. The Hanen approach is based on the theory that children learn to communicate during their natural interactions and conversations in daily life, with the important people in their lives-their family. Our mission is to empower the parents and caretakers by imparting information to the parent on how children develop language skills and the role the parents play in its development. In addition, the parent learns why specific strategies are important for their child and how they can be applied to everyday interactions. All Hanen programs incorporate current research from the fields of early language intervention and adult education, along with continual research on the efficacy and effectiveness of the programs. ‘It Takes Two to Talk’, is geared to mothers of children from birth up to age five, whose speech and language development is delayed (which may or may not be associated with other types of delays). The program is designed for children ranging from those who are not yet using any words to those who are beginning to combine two to three words (as opposed to those with difficulties related to the ability to produce specific sounds). The parent then gains an understanding of the next steps in the development of

their child’s communication skills. The child’s goals are established and the parent is given the tools to help their child achieve these goals. What is unique about the ‘It Takes Two to Talk’ course? ‘It Takes Two to Talk’ reflects a family-centered model of intervention recognizing the child as part of a dynamic social system and the family as the most important element in a child’s life. Empowering parents involves supporting and strengthening their capacity to access knowledge and gain practical skills fostering their child’s development. In addition to having a family-centered focus, ‘It Takes Two to Talk’, provides a naturalistic approach to intervention which draws upon opportunities for learning that occur throughout the child’s natural activities, routines, and interactions. By learning to communicate in real-life situations, a child is better able to generalize newly learned skills to other situations. In addition, in contrast to direct treatment which is time limited and time specific, ‘It Takes Two to Talk’ enables parents to make interventions an ongoing process. How will the course be run? The course will be given in Jerusalem, limited to a group of six mothers. The course will be comprised of five group sessions for two and a half to three hours each. Two additional individual sessions will take place in the child’s home, which will include videotaping and providing feedback on the parent-child interaction. This will enable parents to a) become more aware of how their child is communicating and b) increase the parent’s ability to understand and apply the strategies that are learned in the group sessions. What outcome can the parents expect from taking this course? Considerable research related to the ‘It Takes Two to Talk’ program has been conducted over the years by the Hanen Centre. Research has shown that following an ‘It Takes Two to Talk’ program, mothers successfully learned to use the strategies taught and continued using them after the program ended; children became more involved in interactions and engaged in more “turntaking”, both verbal and nonverbal, and the child’s language skills improved, including an increase in spontaneous use of words and larger vocabularies. For more information or to be included in the next session contact Jordana: 053-311-3916 jordanastaiman@gmail.com  www.BIZNESSMAGAZINE.com

With his good hands (and perhaps genes!), he caught on quite easily. After some training, David became a perfectionist in house painting and repairs and opened his own business where he serves many satisfied customers. What’s unique about you and your service? “Unique” is my name, and that’s what my service reflects. I care about my customers and respect them. Their homes need to look absolutely perfect, neat and beautiful when the job is done by giving the neatest, most professional and reliable service possible. My top priority is that my customers should be happy when they walk into their homes. I employ only Jewish laborers, a valid concern for homeowners. I also give a 100% guarantee on my work. Do you offer any other services? Sure. I install crown moldings for a high class job. I also deal with mold issues (not to be confused with moldings!) I do general home improvements and repairs, but only for my painting customers, as I am not a handyman per se. My profession and passion is the painting industry. Why is interior painting such a significant home improvement? It doesn’t take long after one of the neighbors springs for a new interior paint job before everybody else can soon be seen standing

out in front of their homes with paint brochures and color swatches. Why? A good interior paint job transforms the appearance of your residence. It’s like getting a new home almost overnight. Why is home painting so important? Obviously, a good paint job beautifies and adds character and personality to your home. For that reason alone, it’s important to take sufficient time planning which colors, shades, and paint styles you want to use to decorate your home. But paint also serves as one of your home’s primary lines of defense against insects and other damage, so it’s an important aspect of home maintenance as well. When should I paint? There isn’t any set timeline when you should plan to re-paint your home. It varies depending on climate, the quality of paint that was previously applied, how thoroughly your home was prepped beforehand, and whether or not you hired a professional painter. A poor paint job can last as few as three years before it needs attention, and a polished one can last upwards of twenty. The determining factor is the condition of the home’s current coat. Is the paint chipped, cracked, flaking or peeling? Are there areas of exposed concrete, or is there any sign of water damage to either your siding or the paint itself? Finally, how does your home look? If you see any of the signs mentioned above, a new paint job is probably in order; even if you don’t, you might still be ready for a change. There are many other ideas, tips and advice that I dispense for my customers to bring out the best in their color choices and create the home of their dreams. 

MAC H ANAYIM A Summer Experience that Lasts all Through the Year

How did Camp Machanayim begin? Camp Machanayim, Summer Camp Programs for the English speaking Charedi community in Eretz Yisrael, was established 30 summers ago by Rabbi Dovid and Mrs. Chava Goldstein from Har Nof, Yerushalayim. Mrs. Goldstein reminisces, “As new Olim, we saw that frum children from English-speaking homes in Yerushalayim, particularly in Har Nof where there were so many families like ours, lacked the summer camp opportunities that have been a staple of the American frum community for decades.” Rabbi Goldstein’s many years of experience in Chinuch and Kiruv preAliyah, together with Mrs. Goldstein’s vast experience having attended and worked in summer camps from an early age, helped them understand that what Eretz Yisrael’s frum children needed was a “structured, fun, creative and exciting, American-style, English-speaking, summer camp experience, with-a-strongemphasis-on-good-middos and appreciation and enthusiasm for Torah and mitzvos.” How has the Camp developed? Machanayim is now world-renowned as a leader in the field of summer camps in Eretz Yisrael. With legions of happy campers to its credit, it now boasts several summer camp programs for Talmud Torah boys and Bais Yaakov girls, including: Camp Machanayim day camp for boys; Bnos Machanayim day camp for girls; Bnos Machanayim T.A.B.s (Teens At Bnos Machanayim); Machanayim for Special Kids in the day camps; Separate Golan Adventure Sleep away Camps for boys and for girls; Bnos Machanayim International/YAALE Touring Camp Program; and Camp Machanayim “In English for Hebrew Speakers”. Who are the campers and the counselors? The campers come from a wide variety of neighborhoods and cities throughout Eretz Yisrael and even from countries abroad. The common denominator is that our campers are Bais Yaakov girls and cheder, talmud Torah and yeshiva ketana boys. The members of our staff are talented, warm and experienced graduates of the best yeshivas and Bais Yaakov high schools and seminaries from around the world. They represent important role models for their campers as bnei and bnos Torah, a tremendous responsibility. Rabbi Goldstein explains: “Along with their natural talents, skills and experience gained from being campers themselves, our staff is trained to give their campers attention, support, encouragement and challenges in order to be the very best that they can – and all in a positive, fun, growing environment. The connection between counselors and campers extends far beyond their summer experience, with counselors strongly encouraged to stay in touch with their campers throughout the

year. The Goldsteins remark: “Years ago we coined a phrase: ‘Machanayim! A summer experience that last all through the year!’ Relationships begin during camp, but the ‘real’ relationships are cultivated afterwards and can last for many years to come.” Parents who attended Camp Machanayim now send their children to have the same positive experience. As they stand to register the children, they can be heard humming the camp songs from their youth! Tell us more about the high-quality experience at Camp Machanayim. With small bunks and a capable and dedicated staff of Counselors, Co-Counselors, Junior Counselors Specialty and Technical staff, a high level of personal and individual care is offered. Everything possible is done to identify campers’ strengths and allow their uniqueness to shine out. Rabbi Goldstein explains that children of any age – and indeed adults too – are most fulfilled and happy when challenged to go beyond what they thought they could accomplish. At Camp Machanayim, the goal is to teach the skills needed to succeed, and provide the support and encouragement for achieving one’s best. Campers’ self-confidence and self-image are boosted by the mere challenge and endeavor, so they are given the chance to “take the challenge” at every possible opportunity and grow socially, athletically, and creatively; and in their middos and especially in their relationship with Hakadosh Baruch Hu. Mrs. Goldstein adds, “We do this through all of the exciting sports, creative activities, trips, swimming, and plays; and especially, in the girls’ camps, with the greatly anticipated Machanayim Camp Theme.” The girls’ camps feature a variety of creative activities, such as the famous Bnos Machanayim camp songs, dance, food decorating, contata, a full program of Arts and Crafts, and so much more. While the boys, for their part, are interested mostly in sports, swimming, leagues, challenging hikes etc., they also enjoy plenty of creativity in Arts and Crafts, during Bunk Day Presentations, Night Activities, Color War and more. Both camps feature a full swim program, but the more developed professional Swim Instruction Program is emphasized in the girls’ day camp, because mostly the boys just want to play in the pool! What do you enjoy most about directing Machanayim? The happy faces on all of the Machanayim Campers throughout the years! We are grateful to Hakadosh Baruch Hu for all of the simchah that our campers have experienced over the past thirty years and b’ezrat Hashem it should continue for another thirty. sues by observing their facial expressions, body language and tone of voice. Do you work with children who are on the autism spectrum or have other delays? Yes, I deal with many children and adults who have Asperger’s because, for them, the social realm is their main issue. They want very badly to be able to integrate with others, but don’t know how. Children with autism, on the other hand, do not really want to be social. What are the basic techniques that you use to build social skills in children? I start by explaining why the skill is important in order to succeed socially, and then I use role modeling, visual aids and a system of practice, remediate and reinforce. How long do you generally work with someone before improvement is seen? Each case is different, but I pride myself on not wasting people’s time and money. Depending on the client’s level of motivation, one can even see improvement with the first meeting. Would shy adults benefit from working with you? How does your work with adults differ from that with children? Being an “introvert” is not a dirty word. Only if it gets in the way of daily living does one need to work on improvement. It differs in that one can work cognitively with an adult, whereas with a child that is less of an option. How can parents know if their child can benefit from help with their social skills? If certain behaviors are getting under the skin of the parents or teachers. For example, a 14-year-old boy who asks his teacher, “Are you expecting a baby?” or asks a rebbi, “How much do you earn?” This child would need help learning to be less blunt. Another example would be if a child consistently gives a one or two word answer to whatever he’s asked – he would need to work on improving his communication skills. A third example is a child who is constantly being singled out by a bully – I would work with her on assertiveness. A common case is a single young adult who can never get to a second date. The important thing to know is that change is possible, whatever age and whatever stage – no one is stuck and everyone can grow. Whether the challenge is mild or more severe, I can help you or your child make progress and live a more socially satisfying life. 

Doors of

Opportunity By Meryl Cohen

A

door is first and foremost an entrance. A door or doorway symbolizes transition or opportunity. Beyond it may lie a new experience or insight that may broaden our understanding about ourselves or life in general. In my own life, I have seen that when one door closes another soon appears on the horizon. Have you noticed the difference in doors all around the world and particularly within Israel? From a bustling shuk to mystical Tzfat, they are all unique. I think of them as personal signatures. They can tell us a story about the inhabitants of the house. What is the significance of a red door today? Feng shui, the Chinese philosophical system that harmonizes us with our surroundings, teaches that certain colors bring about emotions and feelings. The front door to your home is the spot where energy enters your home.

Painting a door red helps bring more energy into the home and creates a feeling of welcome. At this time of year, when we count Sefiras ha’Omer, doors and doorways take on a more personal meaning. We all have our own personal doorways that we walk through on our journey of self-improvement. We can leave things behind as we go from one area to another. I would like to invite you to my gallery where I will be featuring a new door I am currently working on. My other work will be on display as well. Please join me for an open house at Rechov HaNurit 5/2 in Beit Shemesh on Friday, June 17th, between 10:00 AM -2:00 PM. If it isn’t convenient, please call to arrange another time to come or to have me bring some work to your home.  077-228-5757 052-5959-006 merylcohenartist@gmail.com www.merylcohen.com www.merylcohenart.etsy.com Find me on Facebook: Atmosphere Art by Meryl Cohen www.BIZNESSMAGAZINE.com

Back Pain?

Reduce your risk with back fitness! By Jerrold Hyman

B

ack pain can strike at any age! It can debilitate, create mental fatigue, generate psychological angst and plenty of physical pain. People want to know what can be done about it: ‘Are there solutions to my problem? Do I need to live like this forever? I can’t function, I am at my wits’ end, and nothing seems to work.’ It is very discouraging. Proper back health is an often neglected part of most fitness programs. Often, muscles in the arms, chest and shoulders are built up while imbalances are created in other areas of the body. Over time, such asymmetry leads to misalignment and pains in areas of the body that are not fit to carry loads properly. Amazingly, back pain affects millions of people. In the U.S., some statistics claim that more than eight out of ten people become affected by back pain at some point during their lives. Severity of back pain varies. Some back pain is chronic and never really goes away, some is severe, and some comes and goes without explanation. Sometimes one’s back is injured by impact, others lift a load improperly, and for others an abrupt, violent cough or just the act of picking up a pencil can do the trick. ‘Ow! My back went out!’ People seek different ways to find relief — often through medications or other various modalities in the medical field. Others look to reduce symptoms and further risk by implementing a supervised back health plan combining regular exercises with proper flexibility training. An ounce of prevention can go a long way. You can reduce your risk by taking the proper steps towards back health through fitness. There are also exercises that can help one who suffers from back pain onto the road of recovery. Such a journey may include multiple endeavors to assist the process. In the end, most people who take this journey find proper back 24

health exercises including maintaining a normal body weight, building up to weight bearing, conducting a proper flexibility program, doing specific water exercises, and obtaining proper guidance to be indispensable to maintaining back health. Elite Fitness Israel will help walk you through the process in your own home and guide you towards back health through preventative exercises. We include back health as an integral part of an overall fitness program and will teach, supervise, and monitor the journey through private lessons and training. You will be able to do the things you like to do again with a healthy back and, G-d willing, even more activities as you progress and continue on a road of ongoing back health. 

Tzvi Air Sets Higher Standards for Air Conditioning & Heating

in New Residential Projects Exclusive interview with

Tzvi Lefkowitz founder of Tzvi Air

How did you feel going from being a successful New York contractor working in large projects to starting small again as a one-man show after your Aliyah? In New York City, my projects included remodeling and building custom houses, with my biggest project being to build a 32unit condominium. Returning to Israel in 2011, I didn’t know the Israeli market and wasn’t sure which field I should concentrate on. I had to explore my options and find my niche. After a year, I started focusing more and more on air-conditioning repairs and service. When I had a client whose air conditioner couldn’t be fixed, it naturally led me to install new units. Thanks to my experience as a contractor, as someone who can view the home as a whole, I was able to take into consideration not only air conditioning specifications but also the space requirements, drywall and lighting designs needed to deliver optimal comfort and beauty.

In short, we have to pay the price of settling the Land. I decided to be humble, start from the bottom and, from there, to conquer gradually. What successful strategy propelled you back to working on large projects? My goal from day one was to become big again. The key to success is to start with the final goal in mind. The principles of success are the same in every place. You need to conceive what you want to accomplish and then build the right strategy with the right tools available to you. Some of the important elements in my strategy were to be ready to work harder than anyone else, ensure absolute client satisfaction, advertise in the right media and reinvest in my business. Most important, surround myself with the right personnel. This is how I transitioned from small to medium and, finally, to larger projects, ensuring along the way that I had the proper infrastructure to deliver impeccably in every job. Speaking of large projects, you were awarded the contract for the entire air conditioning and heating systems installation in one of the most iconic multi-residential projects in the region. Yes. And this is exactly where we wanted to be. We put in the hard work and made the right decisions during the last five years, in order to get to where we are today. On what basis were you were selected as the exclusive air conditioning and heating systems contractor for Ganei Haela from among so many other qualified vendors? Our company values. We have a tradition of providing professional installations and prompt and expert repairs and maintenance services. We only offer the highest quality products according to the specific needs of our clients. We consider ourselves the experts and we provide our clients with the utmost in customer care and satisfaction -- all at fair prices. The demand for our services is the result of applying this philosophy. The Ganei Haela management has been watching our growth and client satisfaction record for the last four years. They have an exclusive clientele who appreciates beauty, quality and service. They needed someone who knows the community and who is already trusted by their clients to provide the high-end service they expect. In addition, they needed a professional team that has the right infrastructure and the necessary connections in the industry in order to secure the delivery of the equipment and materials. Most critically, they needed someone they could trust.

How is this project different than most multi-residential projects? Most residential projects offer an unfinished structure in which to install a central unit system. The new owner is essentially left on his own and is highly limited in terms of potential options. The Ganei Haela project, in contrast, allows each homeowner to customize their A/C system according to their needs and wants without any restriction in terms of product brand, type of equipment or specifications. Each job is planned to perfectly fit each particular family. How do you plan to manage the logistics of this complexity in terms of product selection, personnel and materials? This is where my experience in the construction industry in general, and in the air conditioning industry in particular, plays a major role. Our team of experienced installers, a fleet of service vehicles and strong connections with suppliers and manufactures are the key to deliver the expected service and ensure client satisfaction. What type of warranty do you offer for this type of project? The property owners are fully covered by a combination of the warranties provided by the builder, our company and the product manufacturers. Where do you plan to concentrate your efforts? We will continue with our plans to grow based on the same principles that took us to where we are today: hard work and commitment to excellence in all areas – especially in that of client satisfaction. Are the days of calling Tzvi Air to install individual units at private homes a thing of the past? No. This is what put us on the map. By employing enough technicians in the company, we are able to accommodate customers who need technical services such as air-conditioning repairs or installations of small and full house systems. What’s next? The plan is to deliver this project beyond the client’s expectations and continue to secure contracts with other multiresidential projects. This project is simply the stepping stone we need to continue to grow and expand our company. We are looking forward to see where this leads, one day at a time. 

Using T-Shirt Marketing to Succeed in your Business Interview with

Gadi Moshel

from Canaan Studio What is Canaan? Canaan Studio is a factory that prints shirts, clothing and other promotional items for businesses, organizations and individuals. When did the company begin and how? The company was founded in Kibbutz Tzora in 1985 as a kibbutz factory that made dolls for tourists on site. The dolls were dressed in printed shirts, and subsequently the factory became what it is today. What items do you sell? Shirts, hats, work clothes, bags, conference bags, and promotional items like: mugs, pens, keychains, disk-on-keys, towels, water bottles, etc., all printed with the clients’ company logo. What are the advantages of using a printed shirt for marketing purposes? On trips and special events, printed shirts have three main advantages: 1. Distinguishes the group 2. Unites the team 3. Useful souvenir of the event If you yourself are an employee, recommend it to your boss. Here are a few reasons why: A unique and well-designed printed t-shirt catches people’s eyes and brings them that much closer to the product you’re trying to sell. When your company arranges a party for a holiday or takes a trip, it’s recommended to give out printed t-shirts or caps as souvenirs of the event. This gives employees a feeling of belonging, and gives the company the appearance of an organized, 28

JUNE 2016

united group. They are not only on special occasions - wearing the t-shirts in the office every day gives employee and client the impression of a serious, responsible team and reliable service. In addition to these advantages, in many workplaces employees can dirty or tear their clothes while working. Organizing workclothes for everyone is a simple solution to this problem. It also prevents discomfort for employees who can’t afford a wardrobe for every work day. In most cases, employees really enjoy printed t-shirts, and by wearing them they contribute to the company’s marketing and provide portable advertising for the company. The t-shirts are inexpensive presents and contribute to employee satisfaction and company’s exposure. You can only gain by printing the company’s logo on to t-shirts for your workers. Besides companies, what other uses are there for printed t-shirts? Events, birthdays, camps, sports events, parades, groups, weddings, end-of-the-year events, business trips; the list is endless. Who are your clients? Companies, organizations, factories, small businesses, youth movements, schools, individuals, camps, families and all types of groups. Why do your clients choose Canaan Studio over the others? People know us and trust us. We have been around. We have reliable quality service and our professional work is guaranteed. What about a company that doesn’t have a logo? We provide graphic artists when necessary, to create logos or to design shirts. Is it worthwhile for small companies to “dress” their staff with promotional items or is it only for larger companies? Large and small companies should do their best to brand themselves internally. I would add that giving promotional items to as many clients as they can is a great marketing strategy. Tell us about your new location. In the beginning of 2016 we moved out of the kibbutz to a larger more accessible location in Har Tuv. Most of the companies and organizations that we work with are from the greater Bet Shemesh area and its surroundings. This location accommodates us for growth and is easily accessible, especially to our clients from Bet Shemesh and Modi’in. What are your plans for the future? What is your vision? We want to be recognized as a company that not only manufactures company clothes and promotional items, but also as a company that can help you advance your general marketing strategies. Any additional word of advice? When you print your shirts, do it with a leading company with plenty of experience and can meet deadlines, give you a warranty, and service you all the way, and – most importantly – that’s close to you!  Canaan is located in the industrial zone of Har Tuv Bet, Beit Shemesh Contact Number: 02-991-6916 Visit Canaan at www.cstudio.co.il

All About Your Brakes

Y

ou’re driving along a sunny, leafy street near your home where kids play all the time. You’re being extra careful, when all of a sudden, a young boy runs into the street chasing his flyaway ball. Your brakes screech as you hit them hard and fast, and the boy gives you a sheepish look as he runs back to the safety of the sidewalk, ball in hand. Thank goodness for working brakes. Although every aspect of your car should be working for optimal performance and a safe ride, the brakes are of particular importance, as they can be the most acutely responsible for accidents. If the brakes are not working properly, you may have no control over the car’s ability to stop, which can be very scary and result in a pretty serious accident. Something like windshield wipers not in proper working order must be dealt with, but is not an emergency, whereas brakes are top priority, and you shouldn’t drive unless they’re in perfect working order. How do brake systems work? Most cars these days work with a hydraulic system that puts pressure on discs that are on the wheels to prevent them from turning. When you press on your brake pedal, it triggers rotors, or padded clamps, to squeeze on the disc. This produces a friction that slows the wheels, or stops them completely. Trouble can begin when the pads get worn thin and can’t produce the friction necessary to slow or stop the brake. So what should smooth, working brakes feel like? When you press gently on the brakes, you feel the car gently slowing down along with the pressure. Anti-lock brakes may produce a pulsing in the pedal if you stop abruptly, but otherwise if should feel smooth, engaged, and should not emit any noise. What are the signs of brakes in trouble? You’ll usually notice something is off even without any prior experience, whether

there’s an associated noise or a feeling in the pedal. Often, there’s a wear indicator on the pad that makes a light squeal when the pad has become too thin. That’s an excellent signal to get them changed before trouble starts. If you don’t hear that, when the pads get really thin or the pads have worn out completely, you’ll hear or feel a grinding sound or vibration as the metal hits the disc with nothing in between to soften the impact. This is a situation you want to avoid even more so because not only will your safety be compromised, but the metal pieces can get damaged through the impact, and it will cost more to fix them than to do the simple brake pad change originally needed. Another possible scenario is when the car feels like it’s being pulled to the right or the left side when you’re braking. While this can signal an issue with the alignment or other systems in the car, it may indicate a problem with the brakes. Whatever the source, this is a symptom that requires immediate attention. Yet another problem could be diagnosed if the brake pedal pulses, or the steering wheel pulses when you step on the brakes. As mentioned earlier, this is normal for anti-lock brakes when stopping short, but it’s not normal for regular, soft braking. The probable cause for either of these is uneven rotor surfaces, which can have multiple causes, one being what we said about not having your brake pads changed in due time. Other reasons could be excessive heat, or the cooling and heating that the rotors undergo all the time while you’re driving, which eventually warps the rotors. This is a wear and tear issue that can be addressed with rotor resurfacing. While it’s often tempting to ignore problems you notice that don’t cause immediate trouble, with brakes, it’s not worth taking the risk. Most of the issues mentioned here are simple, quick and not too expensive to fix. Get it checked out and drive safe. 

Even Though it Ain’t Broke, Please Fix it, Mr. Fix It By Ari Katz

I

n the next few weeks both my truck and I are due for a scheduled check-up and service. Neither of us seem to need anything at the moment as my truck is only six years old and well before the age of periodic repairs, and as for me at 39, I too Baruch Hashem, seem to be healthy and in no need of check-ups or maintenance, except for losing a few pounds and adding a few hours of sleep every week. Nevertheless, I know that without our scheduled check-ups, both my truck and I will end up neglecting those warning lights and sounds and aches and, if left unattended to, will ultimately break down in a big way, of course at the least convenient time. It’s axiomatic that most things, whether people, cars, pets, or appliances, don’t suddenly break down. There are exceptions, but in general, large problems come from the precipitous accumulation of smaller ones that have been ignored. And whether deliberate or not, turning a blind eye to small problems, or failure to notice them, is the setup for catastrophic failure later on. Take a simple door handle. When new, the door closes nice and smooth and gently, the “click” sound a calming reassurance that all is good with this door. Six months later, that same door now needs a good tug in order to get it past the door frame. A few months later, the handle begins to loosen from all the unnecessary tugging. At this point a mental note is made that the handle seems not to work properly, but it never gets past the subconscious. The tugging further wears a groove into the tongue of the lock, making it impossible ever to work smoothly again. Another month, and the handle is so loose screws begin to rip out of the wooden door. Finally, the culmination of months of frustration with the manufacturer of such crummy doors, that “click” a faded memory, now mixes with the insulting “thud” each time it doesn’t close; add a screaming child in the background, and wham! A mighty tug is given and, in what would be a moment of comedic brilliance to everyone except the hapless victim, the handle comes right off the door. Adding insult to humiliating injury, the other side of the handle clangs onto the tile floor, clearly announcing that you are now locked in. Unable to tolerate the puzzling irony of being locked inside the world’s smallest bathroom holding nothing but

the useless handle, you thrust your shoulder into the door with everything you’ve got and, like a middle matzah, it splits unevenly down the middle, leaving you free to rest on your now sore left side and in need of a whole new door. This is funny because it happens every day, at some time to everyone. It all could have been prevented with a simple shpritz of WD-40 every six months or so. Really. For years now I have wondered why homeowners will go out of their way to honor their car’s needs, yet neglect their homes until something actually breaks. And this is precisely where I come in. Don’t wait until something actually breaks to have it looked at and fixed. That famous saying is not always true. Your home needs a check-up, a once-over, and physical exam to tighten what needs to be tightened, oil what needs to be oiled, clean what needs to be cleaned. I am the general practitioner for your home. So before you find yourself locked in your own bathroom, let me come over and fix all the things that are not yet broke. This isn’t why I called my company Mr. Fix It Solutions, but it definitely is apropos.  Contact 052-736-7369 premiumrepairs@gmail.com

DENTAL CENTER

One Hour Braces! Dr. Eli Gherman, DDS

I

t happens all the time…..a patient comes in a week before the wedding and asks, “Doc, can you fix my teeth?” Most of the time the answer is no, teeth take a long time to move. However, there are times when a small problem in the patient’s smile can be corrected in a very short period of time. For example, a space in between the teeth, or a tooth that sticks out can be fixed within a couple of months, weeks and, yes, even in one hour! How is that possible? Let me explain….. When I was in my orthodontic post-graduate program at Montefiore Medical Center, one of my teachers, Dr. Shelton, patented a method called “fingerdontics”. Besides being a high-end Manhattan orthodontist, Dr. Shelton was also a professional jazz flutist and naturally a very patient man, and for the method of fingerdontics one needs to have a lot of patience. (First a Warning: Before I explain his method, do not try this yourself as you may damage your teeth.) He would lean his finger gently on a tooth while explaining to us that teeth are actually joints. The tooth sits in a socket of bone and is surrounded by fibers that connect it to the bone. These fibers can stretch, so after just a short time the tooth will visibly move. After his “show and tell” he would leave the room, and within seconds the tooth moved back out of place! We all learned the lesson: the problem with “fingerdontics” is that the same fibers that stretched and allowed for the tooth to move will then return to their original shape and bring the tooth back with them. This is what orthodontists call “tooth memory.” One way to reset tooth memory is through the normal course of orthodontic therapy. This allows for the extra time that enables the fibers to reshape in the new position. The other way is to place a fixed or permanent retainer after the teeth are moved. So how is it possible to move teeth in one hour and make sure they stay that way? We place a fixed retainer on the back of the teeth. I use a small and sleek fixed retainer and coat it with a very smooth material. Patients are very happy because the fixed retainer is comfortable and avoids the need to wear a removable retainer full time. I’ve also modified Dr Shelton’s “fingerdontic” method, since I have rachmanus on the patient and my finger, and instead use a couple of braces to accomplish the same thing. 34

JUNE 2016

To sum up: We often can correct minor spacing or tooth misalignment in one hour with some braces and a fixed retainer. So when you have an important business meeting tomorrow but fear you look like Nanny McPhee, or you are afraid your date tonight might mistakenly call you Sponge Bob, it can’t hurt to give us a call. You might still have time; in fact, you might have more than enough time! One hour braces! Please note that we don’t recommend you wait till the last minute to get orthodontic therapy. If you see something in your smile that you want to correct, it is always better to come in for a consultation as soon as possible.

Before

After This patient didn’t like the spacing between his teeth and refused to walk outside with braces or Invisalign. We placed four braces, while he sat in my office for one hour. We then placed his fixed retainer, and he was all smiles!  Dr. Gherman received his degree in orthodontics from Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Bringing Jews Home

TAMA 38 By Ilan Rubinstein

L

Path to Profit

ast month, I promised to cover another government program called TAMA 38. Israel is uniquely located between Africa and Asia, along a geological fault line called the Great Rift Valley. The land has historically suffered from a major earthquake every few centuries with resultant high casualties and extensive damage. Rather than waiting for the inevitable to recur, various measures were proposed in order to forestall the possibility of devastation and financial ruin. In 1978, the Israeli government implemented new standards for building which created structures that can better withstand earthquakes. However, the problem of less solid, existing housing remained. In 2005, the Israeli government enacted legislation called TAMA (National Outline Plan) 38. This law promotes private sector reinforcement of building structures completed prior to January 1st, 1980 via the granting of additional building rights as well as tax incentives to developers. The TAMA 38 program got off to a slow start for a number of reasons including objections from individual tenants, local authorities’ reluctance to allow for higher levels of urban congestion, and economic viability. Consequently, revisions were made to the law which included increasing the incentives and reducing the requisite majority of agreeable tenants required to start the ball rolling from unanimous to 66% of the tenants. TAMA 38/1 The plan is as follows: Tenants in a building get together and sign an agreement with a developer who agrees to refurbish and strengthen the building, adding some or all of the following: Additional floor space, security rooms, balconies, elevators, parking, exterior cladding and more. In consideration, the tenants pass on the new building rights provided under the legislation to the developer for the construction of new apartments on additional floors. Note that with TAMA 38/1 there will be a high level of noise, dust and inconvenience for the duration of the work. The builder is then able to sell these apartments on the open market which, along with the tax breaks, enable him to undertake the remedial work and improvements and make a tidy sum to boot. Classic win-win, except that TAMA 38/1 is only viable in higher value property areas and not necessarily where it is most needed for example Bet Shean and Afula. It is hoped that

further revision of the law will make some of these other areas more viable. Such projects are often completed within 12-18 months from commencement of work. TAMA 38/2 This plan involves demolition of the existing blocks and construction of brand new taller buildings in a more pleasant, intelligently planned and aesthetic setting. These projects can take between 5-10 years. This is a more extensive enterprise which attracts some of the larger property companies. TAMA 38/2, when it fully takes off, could significantly improve the stock of housing, both in terms of quality and numbers. Owners are thus able to upgrade an old dingy asset to a new larger one complete with all the mod-cons. Tenants are provided with replacement accommodation during construction. An 80% majority is required to pass this category of redevelopment. “SHOW ME THE MONEY!” There are several ways to capitalize on TAMA 38. Firstly, one can purchase brand new TAMA 38/1 apartments in a refurbished building with savings of 10-20 percent on regular developments. Secondly, one can buy an existing apartment currently at some stage of planning or construction in either TAMA program from owners that cannot wait and need to sell now. In addition to receiving income from rent, there is a significant upside in the hope of trading old for new or getting free extensions and refurbishment. Such upside, if realized, can provide substantial capital gain over the medium term. Thirdly, one can invest as a partner with a developer or into a fund, rake in a share of the profits and/or convert the investment into a substantial discount on purchasing one of the new apartments. Turnaround is expected within two to three years. There are some great ways to make a good return on the real estate changes taking place in Israel. Why Vintage and Period Furniture is Sought-after

AN INSIDE LOOK

O

ld furniture, dating as far back as the 1700’s, is still highly regarded and sought-after even today, with all of our technological advancements. These woodworking masterpieces have essentially made their appeal timeless by combining all of the features we admire, and they do so with a sense of balance and harmony that can only be achieved by a human touch. A key difference between the furniture of times past and the produce of today is the method of manufacture. Today, even most high-end furniture is made in a factory using an array of powerful machinery to do the work. This means that the manufacturing process plays a key role in design choices, where ease and efficiency of production take priority over esthetic considerations. The once beautifully refined and wonderfully decorative furniture of the Queen Anne, Victorian and Chippendale styles, to name just a few, have now been replaced by the so-called modern design, which attempts to imply that the square, simple “clean” esthetics is the choice of our time. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely such design started as an artistic choice, as clean and elegant design characterized by graceful straight lines may be found, for example, in beautifully refined Federal-style pieces. Rather, most modern design stems from an inability to reproduce the works of the past and as an attempt to increase profits by simplifying design. When one looks into the history of woodworking, the reasons for this become clearer. The old craftsman had no electricity, no bolts or screws. Nothing but their own hands and simple tools to do the work. A close connection with the wood as well as a development of individual skill was necessary in order to produce high-end results. The great benefit of these traditional methods would result in a high level of artistic freedom. The skilled worker was free to work the wood in any way he pleased, be it a curvy cabriolet table leg, a delicately carved violin head-stock or hand cut dovetail drawer joints, which could last for hundreds of years. Now compare that to the rigid capabilities of a woodworking machine, where “square and straight” are almost a necessity. In a factory setting, production of complex shapes using machines requires careful machine set-up and many operations will still need to be done by hand, whether with a machine or a hand tool.

An example of a modern style of fine woodworking, highly refined work and very popular among modern craftsman.

Extremely contemporary yet still completely refined and satisfying, this is an example of modern design which stems from artistic choices. The construction of such a piece is highly involved, a fact almost hidden by its natural appearance, but surely felt in its presence.

These modern methods which allow for fast mass production cannot by any means reproduce the amazing designs found in the best of furniture, hence resulting in the development of the over-simplified, modern design. It’s understandable that the employment of master craftsmen by a large company might render the high end-furniture prices inaccessible to most. Nowadays, the production of magnificent hand-made furniture has become a specialized, yet still highly sought-after niche market, with modern design in this case being of refined taste. Today, the innate human drive to create articles of beauty, objects which reflect in their presence a sense of a human accomplishment, has led to an ever-growing and enthusiastic community of amateur woodworkers. This is the reason why high caliber woodworking hand tools are widely available in the market today. However, along with this availability follows an array of woodworking “gimmicks” promoted to help woodworkers around skill-related issues, with all kinds of unnecessary “problems” being invented, which one of those products can allegedly solve. This is of course profit-related, so the best of woodworking know-how remains harder to discover and learn. The truth is that there’s no substitute for real skills learned, skills which unlock the doors to true woodworking capabilities and the utmost of joy in the craft. Here at Restorno we have the privilege to examine many antiques and learn from their clever yet practical construction. We are excited to be opening a woodworking school this summer, which will offer hand tool woodworking and restoration classes. From basics to advanced, and for all age groups. Please contact us for more details regarding the courses and admission.

The picture says it all. Chairs like this Queen Anne dining room chair were made well before we had electricity. Only skill can get you there, and only select individuals are still making such furniture today.

This Federal style sideboard is a great example of a highly rich and decorative piece which maintains a sense of refinement and simplicity.

Helping People

Interview with Rabbi Shea Lewis,

Director at The PATH Center Rabbi Shea Lewis is originally from Edgware, London, and has been living in Israel for the last 17 years. A graduate of Hasmonean High School and Gateshead Yeshiva, he continued his studies in Israel, where he received smicha from HaRav Meir Bransdorfer. After his studies in psychology at the Open University, he started coordinating educational opportunities for mental health professionals. In 2015, Rabbi Lewis launched PATH, where he feels able and privileged to offer these services in a professional setting. What is the PATH Center and why was it founded? The PATH Center is an exclusively English-speaking training and provision center in the fields of counseling and psychotherapy. The PATH Center aims to bring everything under one roof. It gives the professional community a place where they can train, network and advance with the warmth and professionalism that they have now come to appreciate and welcome. Who are your students? We have a very diversified crowd at PATH who live locally, as well as students from Bet Shemesh, Telzstone and Petach Tikva. We also have long-distance students from England, Belgium, and as far away as Australia! Our students are from all across the religious spectrum. What courses do you offer? The flagship program is the two-year training program in clinical mental health counseling. This program is structured on the syllabus presented in most American universities, and offers students a solid but wide-ranging program dealing with an array of topics that therapists are likely to encounter in their clinical work. In addition, we have advanced programs for professionals such as a unique program in Expressive Arts that is starting in a few weeks’ time! Is there fieldwork as part of the training? PATH has its own dedicated fieldwork coordinator who oversees students’ placements and currently works in collaboration with many English-speaking yeshivos, seminaries, and other organizations. The low-cost yet professional services that we are able to provide have been welcomed by many directors over the last year, and we’ve received tremendous feedback. To whom would you recommend counseling as a profession? Generally, students who walk through our doors will all say the same thing: that they always knew this is what they wanted to do! Our job is to guide and train. Of course, not every student is suitable

for this field — which we’ll tell them quite honestly if that is the case. It is a disservice to them, and of course any potential future clients, to train a less -than-ideal therapist. Who makes up the staff of the PATH Center? All of our faculty are licensed professional psychologists and social workers, all of whom have decades of experience in clinical work and training through supervision and lecturing. Time and time again our students report that, compared to Israeli university social work programs, specifically in terms of actual clinical skills and therapeutic tools, our program has constantly delivered a training level that is second to none! This, I’m sure, is due in no small part to the stature of our faculty and the fact that they are all currently running busy practices and not teaching psychotherapy as an abstract academic field. As the center has a religious student body, we are under strong rabbinical guidance; our syllabus actually includes a specific module on halachic and hashkafic considerations when working in this field. We also accommodate by hosting separate hours on campus for the men’s and women’s groups. What are your plans for the future? Originally the vision was to create a central campus with clinics that provide a service for therapists and clients alike. Now that this vision has Baruch Hashem been realized, we are expanding our horizons and have some exciting new programs and internationallyacclaimed guest lecturers scheduled in the fall. Aside from the main training programs, we have hosted four top-class lecturers from the United States over the last year, and have more lined up to present in 2017. Particularly exciting is a three-day conference with acclaimed Harvard professor Dr. Ron Siegel, who is one of world’s authorities on mindfulness. In addition, we hope to expand our clinics and professional library that currently operate on campus. From where do you draw the most satisfaction in your work? The siyata dishmaya that we have experienced has been overwhelming, seeing the students’ smiles as they walk into class, and experiencing the amazing atmosphere and sense of belonging for the English-speaking professional community has been incredible. The heart-warming comments and emails from people whose lives have changed make it all worth it! 

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT COUNTERTOP FOR YOUR KITCHEN

Your kitchen work surface is used for placing food, cutting and chopping, baking, putting down hot pots and many other functions. Most of our countertops are made of marble, granite or Caesarstone (quartz). However, there are several other options that may work well with your kitchen décor and lifestyle. We’d like to tell you about the pros and cons of the most popular types of work surfaces on today’s market. Granite is first and foremost the most widely used material. It has a speckled surface and is available

AT KITCHENS WE PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR NEEDS AND PREFERENCES, AND WILL PROFESSIONALLY DESIGN A KITCHEN TO YOUR SATISFACTION. in a wide range of colors. Granite is a very durable surface and does not wear out quickly. You can use it for cutting, baking (rolling out dough) and it’s safe for hot pots. Granite countertops are usually high gloss, but they are also available in a matte finish.

On the other hand, granite is not stain resistant and is relatively expensive. Plus, it’s not recommended to use strong cleaning agents which are abrasive and can cause the granite to wear down. Its speckled pattern may also make it harder to match with a ceramic backsplash. Caesarstone countertops are the most popular in modern kitchens. This material is made from 93% quartz plus a small percentage of pigment which makes it available in a wide range of shades and finishes from matte to high gloss. There are certain types of Caesarstone that look just like natural stone. Caesarstone countertops are reasonably priced; some are even extremely low-priced. Because this is a synthetic material which is poured into a mold, shapes for an island or special counter can be custom made for your kitchen. Naturally, this will be more costly than the standard. The downside of this material is that it may develop stains if hot pots are placed on it (although generally these can easily be removed). It is also recommended to use a cutting board rather than to cut or chop directly on Caesarstone countertops. A welcome addition to the variety of kitchen countertop materials is the wooden work surface. If you appreciate the warm, natural look, solid wood would be an excellent choice of worktop material. Butcher block is the most commonly used version of this work surface. With wood, the textures and shades are almost endless. Colors range from light maple to dark walnut. Wooden work surfaces are most suitable for cutting and chopping. The countertop is actually one giant cutting board. Surfaces made of wood can easily be repaired by sanding. You can also combine wooden inserts on countertops made of granite or Caesarstone. However, wood definitely has its drawbacks. It’s not advisable to roll out dough or put a hot pot on a wooden countertop. They are not stain resistant and require resealing every so often. It’s also not recommended to use wood near the sink which would cause it to wear out more quickly. Last, but not least, stainless steel has an important place as a worktop material. It is hygienic, stain resistant, tolerates hot pots and is ideal for rolling out dough and baking. This material is available either in matte or high gloss. Integrated sinks are an option too. However, you can’t cut or chop directly on stainless steel. It can get scratched or show water stains quite easily. Are you confused by all the various available options for your countertops? Let our designer guide you. Call today and make an appointment for your consultation.

Keep Your Little Ones Happy

with Pitzponim Interview with

Moshe Feldman

owner of Pitzponim Baby Store

S

o many times, we routinely pass a store and don’t pay much attention. We assume it was always there and will always be there. Here’s a little bit of background information about a familiar store. How long has Pitzponim been in business? Our store has been opened for about ten years, providing faithful and professional service to all our clients. What kind of products do you carry? Just about everything you need for a baby, except food, that is. We have extremely broad selections of baby carriages, strollers, high chairs, car seats, infant carriers, baby baths, toys, pacifiers, bottles and lots, lots more. We have a really large area – 150 square meters of display, which provides our customers with lots of options plus a pleasurable shopping experience. Which brands do you carry? Today, the market is flooded with merchandise imported from all over the world. We try to work with the top brands that provide the best customer service and stand behind their products. We carry Silver Cross, Baby Jogger, Greentom, Mountain Buggy, Graco, Chicco and many others. Most companies provide a full one year guarantee on their strollers and service afterwards. However Baby Jogger and Greentom provide lifetime guarantees on their products. Do you carry children’s furniture too? Of course. We work with the veteran, reputable Segal baby furniture company. They have a large selection of infant cribs and changing tables. They also manufacture wooden and plastic cradles and playpens. In addition, we carry a full line of adorable child-size linens, fit for your little prince or princess. How do you decide which stroller or carriage to recommend for your customers? Before we recommend which model to buy, we try to evaluate what the personal requirements are for each customer. Only then will we guide the customer as to which choice is best for him. Do you generally have the merchandise in stock? We definitely have most of our merchandise in stock, especially the

Bizness Magazine

really popular items. The customer can either take it with him or have it delivered immediately. There are specific items that aren’t always in stock, but we try to have everything delivered within 14 days of purchase. Does Pitzponim offer newborn package deals? What are the advantages of these deals? In contrast to the chains that offer newborn packages of specific items which include a carriage, crib and dresser which don’t necessarily fit the needs of the particular customer, we prefer that our customers choose the items that they want and that best suit their needs. We then give an overall discount on the entire ‘package’ they have chosen for themselves. What are your store hours? We’re open every weekday from 11 am until 1 pm. Sunday through Thursday nights, we are open from 7 until 10.30 pm when the Pitzponim are fast asleep. We also have afternoon hours available by appointment. In conclusion, what is the most fun thing about your store? The best thing is that the customers that come to us are happy people. Children create happiness. We are happy to share our customers’ happy occasions and do our best to ensure them calm, quiet days and nights ahead. 

Dassi* had been looking forward to The Hope Tour for months, praying that her doctors would give her the approval to travel. An adorable seven- year-old girl, Dassi was diagnosed with blood cancer - acute leukemia - around age four or five, and has spent an inordinate amount of her life in Tel Hashomer Hospital. Since her diagnosis, Chaiyanu volunteers have been at her

side, in the hospital and at home, keeping her company, entertaining her, and filling the social void left from her lack of attendance in school. Dassi wished for an electronic keyboard for Chanukah, and Chaiyanu’s volunteers delivered it to her bedside with clowns and a musical celebration! And then came the doctor’s approval for The Hope Tour to South Africa! Dassi’s Chaiyanu volunteer, Temima Rosenstein, said Dassi made many new friends, and reunited with children who were with her when Chaiyanu sent her to Camp Simcha last summer. She loved seeing all the animals, going to all the parties at amazing people’s houses, and just dancing and singing on all the bus rides! Temima shared with Bizness Magazine: “This trip gave Dassi so much power and optimism to continue in her battle, and she hasn’t stopped raving about it since the minute she got home! Every second of the trip was an experience she wouldn’t give up for the world. She and her family are so grateful that Chaiyanu gave her this trip of a lifetime!â€?  Donate to Chaiyanu at www.chaiyanu.org.il

All About Food Processors

ood processors are fairly ubiquitous these days. Although not an appliance that everyone has, their ease of use and ability to shorten prep time immensely makes them hugely popular, and to many cooks, indispensable. A food processor allows you to experience an entirely different gastronomic experience, with chopping, pureeing and other functions that you simply can’t do by hand available with the touch of a button. While almost all food processors perform the same functions, there are vast differences between models. The two main differences are motor size and capacity. Motor size dictates how powerful your machine is. The more powerful, the stronger it will perform and the better the results. Lower wattage might work for pureeing soup, but it would be difficult to grind meat, for example. The higher the wattage the more likely the machine will last you a long time with no problems. Capacity is important so that you can fit everything you need all at once. Especially for households that keep Shabbat, have large families and often have guests, large capacity is an important feature; even with the larger models, you have to split your potatoes for your kugel into several batches. Beyond these, the differences are either in form or function. In form, every food processor has a different shape–some have straight sides while others are sloped. Some have the

buttons under the bowl, while others have them on the side. This is mostly a personal concern, although straight sides may make for more even processing. Also, check the bowl to see if it will leak liquid. Some bowls have a hole in the middle and liquid can leak out of them fairly easily, something that won’t be fun for you to clean up. In terms of function, food processors come with different blades that achieve different results. The standard blade is the s-blade, which is two curved blades in the shape of the letter “s” that grind and chop. Every miniversion has this. Other standard blades are large slicing and shredding. Beyond that, you might have to invest in a more expensive version if you want more options. Some stores sell models that are ordered with the famous “kugel blade” to achieve perfect potato kugel consistency. With a large brand you can order various other size shredding, grinding and slicing blades, which of course come at a price. One last thing to keep in mind is the company itself. A large, well-known company is often able to send you replacement parts if, for example, your bowl breaks. A no-name, cheaper brand won’t be able to do that. With food processors, if definitely makes sense to buy the best you can afford. As a small appliance, even the expensive ones are not prohibitive and can last a long time. 
