Light Years
Ahead
Interview with Abi Stern, of Stern Lighting
How did you become involved in the lighting industry? My father was one of the first electricians in Israel at the time of the establishment of the State of Israel. He was responsible for wiring the electricity at the Kotel and putting other major sites onto Jerusalem’s electricity grid. His work sparked in me an interest in lighting and I decided to study how to manufacture light fixtures. I started studying techniques and materials, invested time in learning all about the industry and even went abroad to fairs and exhibitions. At the time, most manufacturers of chandeliers and light fixtures were in Tel Aviv. These manufacturers had learned their trade in Europe and continued to work in the field when they came to to Israel. I had to start from scratch and build my business from the bottom up. When did you open a business of your own? About fifty years ago, in the 1960s, we opened our first store near the Habesha neighborhood in Jerusalem, and eight years later moved “Shtern Chandeliers” to Strauss Street in the heart of the city. We have since opened a large manufacturing facility and showroom in Romema. Is there a difference between lighting and light fixtures? Lighting is the source of light – the bulb – and light fixtures are what house that light source. When I started working in the industry fifty years ago, each of these components was separate. The fixture would generally consist of a metal frame in some shape and color, and the light (or bulbs) were affixed somewhere on top, inside or below that frame. 4

SEPTEMBER 2016
Even back then I understood that lighting was not only functional and that if we want to determine the atmosphere and character of a room, we have to focus on how to present the light. So I began my acquaintance with the design and manufacture of light fixtures and began making chandeliers. In essence, I discovered an art and it has been my occupation and life ever since. Have you faced any challenges over the years? Around fifteen years ago, they started to dig up the roads in the city center in preparation for laying down the infrastructure for the light rail. This led to a big change in the city’s public transportation and parking systems and made the location of our store inconvenient for customers. Most businesses were moving to Talpiot but we felt it wasn’t the right place for us. We decided to relocate to Romema, a northern suburb of of Jerusalem, which has experienced a huge industrial boom in recent years. We even had trouble finding a store that could accommodate our manufacturing facility and showroom, so at present our showroom and factory are on split levels. We have ample parking in our new location, customers should call in advance and we will open up a parking spot for you. How has the lighting industry changed in the last fifty years? More than a century ago, Thomas Edison invented the first bulb in history which consisted of a metal filament. Then came fluorescent bulbs and the more recent PL version of the fluorescent family, and later the halogen element. Each of these technologies lasted a couple of decades and now LED has revolutionized the world, offering more power and energy efficiency. Today its capabilities are exponentially higher than its predecessors and it’s a technology that’s developing at a rapid pace. One day we’ll look back and laugh at how much we paid for a bulb with such low wattage. How have these changes in technology affected your business? I wasn’t a young man when I started my business but I was de-

termined to learn and succeed. I keep up with the times and I am always on the lookout for new developments in the industry. When technology evolves, we do too. The creative potential of LED and other new lighting technologies is enormous and I utilize them as my new medium for creative design. Instead of creating stand-alone light fixtures, these new technologies enable me to design custom lighting integrated into the design of a room. Contemporary lighting design, like recessed lighting or lighting that works by reflecting off a wall, often doesn’t involve a visible light fixture. This can provide softer, more natural light and light up a space more effectively. I work on these kind of projects with many architects and designers who share my creative vision. What makes Shtern light fixtures unique? I see every lighting project as a unique opportunity to create something that doesn’t exist yet. You bring us an idea, your plans and an interior designer and we’ll turn your dream into a reality. We import and sell products from manufacturers abroad, but we manufacture most of our fixtures ourselves. Our expertise lies specifically in manufacturing fixtures that are one of a kind. We can take fifteen seemingly random items and put them together to form a unique and extraordinary fixture. We exactly reproduce fixtures for clients who show us a catalog or a picture of something they like. We adapt existing fixture designs to clients’ specific requests (color, material, embellishments, etc.). We also specialize in laser cut fixtures as well as layered laser cuts, using specialized machinery. If you can imagine it, we can make it. In addition, there are specialists one can hire today to calculate with mathematical accuracy the number of watts a room requires for optimum light. We reach almost identical values by just walking into a room and using an artist’s perspective to assess the most appropriate type and form of light. Tell us about a few special projects you’ve done over the years. We have created unique light fixtures for various large projects and venues, including hotels, educational institutions and public buildings. These include the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Jerusalem, Kever Rachel, Kever David HaMelech, Kever Shmuel HaNavi, Lot Hotel at the Dead Sea, Hebrew University, Bikur Cholim Hospital in Jerusalem, many prestigious shuls and event halls, and more.
We also have a Shul Ner Tamid Gemach that’s been operating for about 30 years. Materials of all kinds that are left over from the manufacture of other light fixtures we use to manufacture a Ner Tamid for shuls or shtiebels – each of which is completely unique. Is LED lighting safe to use? Many decades of research has shown that every source of light, from the most primitive of candles to today’s advanced lighting technologies, can have an ill effect on our health. LED is no worse than any other technology.
How do I know which bulbs to buy? We hold stock of all types of bulbs but we highly recommend LED bulbs. Why use more power for the same result? But if a client comes in and insists on halogen, we won’t refuse to sell it to them. We offer a five- year guarantee on our imported European LED bulbs and an almost lifetime guarantee on our custom light fixtures. Who’s in your team? I do some installations myself but my oldest son Shlomi, who is a licensed electrician and project manager, will often do installation of lighting for private clients or in collaboration with architects and other design professionals. He is also my Rebbe when it comes to teaching me about new technologies and how we should integrate them into our work. We invite the public to come to our store and consult with us on all the available options to fulfill their dream.

Letter from the Editor
SHARING THE MIRACLE OF SUCCESS
Dear Readers, I was in a meeting with a young entrepreneur, and he popped the following, question regarding a particular business we were discussing: Is this a good business? It’s certainly a very interesting question. How do you define or classify a business as being ‘good’ or not? Many variables come to mind when trying to answer this question: Who is the business for? What are the goals of the owner? Does the business meet the desired lifestyle of the owner? What added value does the owner bring to the business? Is there competition? Is there growth potential? How much money can be made? Is it a seasonal product or service? Does it bring a solution to a problem? These are just a few of the countless questions that need to be addressed before being able to answer the original question. We discussed in a prior issue that the best business is one where the owner has a passion for the products or services he offers. In this month’s letter, I want to address this question from a different perspective: the YOU factor. If you look around your house, office or school, you’ll see a wide variety of products, such as computers, air conditioners, tables, watches, doors, windows, appliances of all types, notebooks, light bulbs and many more. There are individuals who make a fortune in each of these industries, and at the same time there are individuals who have failed in each of them. You can give the exact same product to two people to sell, and they will have totally different results, based on their skills, enthusiasm, ideas, work ethics, resources, marketing and sales strategies and personal belief systems, among other variables. This allows us to conclude that there is no such a thing as a good business or a bad business. There is instead such a thing as the YOU factor: what are you going to do in order to succeed. Furthermore and to prove the point, an established company with great products hires two new salespeople. Both have the exact same product and are given very similar territories. One of them becomes “salesman of the year” and the other one quits after thirty days, blaming his lack of success on the price of the product, and because “the market is not interested in this type of product”. So when evaluating a business opportunity or a job, don’t go around asking friends, relatives or even the so called “experts” about the business you’re considering. Instead, go to the mirror and ask the following question to the guy you are looking at: What are YOU going to do with it to make it a success? Wishing you a great end of summer! Finding
Our Place in the System Interview with
Dr. Sara Genstil, Psychologist
Since 1983, Dr. Sara Genstil, Ph.D. has been practicing psychology using the Intersubjective Systems Theory. She uses this treatment modality for individuals with various conditions, such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, trauma, relationship issues, etc. Dr. Genstil is available to see couples and families privately as well. In addition, she treats bereaved families through the Ministry of Defense and terror victims through National Insurance (Bituach Leumi). What is your background? After completing my B.A. and M.A. in Social Work at the University of Southern California (USC), I became actively involved in the Jewish and Israeli communities in Los Angeles, which was a very rewarding experience. I felt I was contributing to the bonding of the two communities. However, in my work with patients in the Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles, I felt that I hadn’t the extensive knowledge required to really bring about change. Therefore, I decided to continue my education toward a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the California Graduate Institute (CGI) with a psychoanalytic orientation. After completion of my Ph.D., I did a post-doctorate with Robert Stolorow, Ph.D., the global leading authority in Intersubjective Systems Theory. The knowledge that I gained from him made me feel that I had finally acquired the depth and expertise that would enable me to truly help patients achieve the changes 8
•
SEPTEMBER 2016
they desired. Over the years, Dr. Stolorow became my supervisor and mentor and is my guiding voice to this very day, especially when I am dealing with a patient with deep psychological issues. My relationship with him enables us to consult and brainstorm together on appropriate therapeutic interventions. What is the Intersubjective Systems Theory? The basic idea is that no person lives in isolation. Every individual is part of a system, and in fact, of many systems, defined by various common terms such as family, couple, mother-child, teacher-student, to name a few. In order to understand an individual’s behavior, we must understand the systems in which the individual functions, together with the subjective experience of each member within each system. The degree to which a system is healthy or unhealthy results from the role of each part of the system (i.e., each individual in the system). This means that a healthy system can only be established by each individual examining themselves and their behavior within the system. (“Am I responding adequately to my spouse, child, friend, employer, etc.?”) In other words, we must focus on ourselves and try to adapt our behavior in relation to other individual(s) in the system. It’s important to emphasize that every individual’s perception of the world is based on experiences from early infancy and throughout life, which shapes their individual world view (defined as their “organizing principles”). In order to improve a system, we need to identify the organizing principles that influence
Bizness Magazine
02 999 3939
their behavior, especially in cases when this behavior causes friction or conflict. In other words, the ideal way to improve a system is for each member to take responsibility for his or her own actions. When one part of the system changes, the entire system will change as a result. In therapy, the implication of this approach is to understand a patient’s organizing principles. For example, I had a patient who all her life had been told she was stupid. Her parents and teachers expected very little from her and thought she was incapable of achieving anything. These messages affected her to the point where she believed that she was incapable. This became her organizing principle. Until her early 40s, she did not pursue higher education and accomplished very little professionally, working as a sales person in a clothing store, and living her life in the belief that she was worthless. She came to therapy as a result of depression, difficulties in relationships and low selfesteem. During the course of treatment, once we had identified the subjective system in which she was entrapped, we were able to make changes. Of course, sifting through all the emotional baggage she had accumulated during her lifetime made it a long process. Gradually she began to connect with her true self and true abilities, and became aware that her former perceptions were false. Subsequently, she not only went to college, but succeeded in obtaining an M.A. in Education with high honors. Her goal was to make an impact on the educational system that had failed her. Can problems arise due to unknown trauma? Over the years, I have worked with numerous women who had trouble connecting with men and consequently hadn’t married. For example, I had a patient who was 32 years old and unmarried. Through the process of therapy, she revealed that she had been molested when she was about 10 years old and had never disclosed the secret to anyone. She had formed the perception that “men are dangerous.” Anytime she tried to connect with a man, she subconsciously sabotaged the relationship and backed off. Once we identified the trauma and its impact on her behavior, and confronted her fear, anger, misery and the secret that she’d kept even from her mother, we managed to work through it and enabled her to realize that the person who had molested
her was dangerous, but that this was not true for all men. In other words, she replaced her former organizing principle with a new one. Eighteen months later, she married. Are there traumas that cannot be overcome? Generally speaking, the earlier a trauma occurs, the harder it is to overcome. A 26-year-old female medical student came to me for treatment as a result of anxiety and an inability to connect with men. During the course of treatment, she revealed that her infant and toddler years were spent on a kibbutz, and as was mandatory at the time, all children slept every night in the designated children’s house. Her caregivers reported that every night she had protested and cried. Being forced to separate from her particularly loving and caring parents for those first three years of her life led to severe trauma, which developed into anxiety and an eating disorder. This trauma left such an indelible mark on her being, that even after working together for years, she is still unable to fully connect with men. She was able to resolve her anxiety and eating disorder and recently sent me an e-mail saying that she holds the position of head of a department in an Israeli hospital. However, she has never married. Do you have any parenting tips for our readers? Winnicott, a great psychoanalyst, answered this question by saying that the best tip for parents is to provide “a relatively good environment.” Obviously, parents aren’t able to be present at all times and all parents make mistakes. It’s enough if parents meet a child’s basic needs most of the time, but only if both physical and emotional needs are met. It is critical to build “basic trust” by creating as solid an attachment as possible between a parent and child, but within the framework of a family set of boundaries. Another major tip is to encourage a child’s development in physical or motor, sensory and emotional areas. Any final words of wisdom? Every client is like a puzzle. And every client brings a new piece of their puzzle to each session. My role is to assist patients to fit the pieces together and see the whole picture – an entire being that makes a whole, complete puzzle. 052-260-9087 saragenstil@gmail.com

Interview with Shmuel Zisovitch and Yechiel Dopelt of
Property Point Management
Managing Your Property, Properly What motivated you to open Property Point Management? We recognized a strong need for services in the field that went beyond simply selling. We repeatedly saw people buying amazing investments or vacation homes and then finding themselves unhappy with the mediocre management services available to them. Property Point Management was created to rectify that. We believe property management is a specialist profession. It demands attention to the smallest details, efficiency, in-depth understanding of the real estate market and its trends, local legal knowledge, basic building knowledge and the ability to resolve highly strung emotional situations. With a network of friends and relatives in the area, why would someone need a managing agent for their Israeli property? Theoretically, friends or family CAN do what we do. But, like most things in life, there is a benefit to having someone who specializes in doing the job. For example, when your car has a flat tire or needs an oil change, most people don’t think twice about taking it to a mechanic. Not because they can’t change the oil or tire, but because the mechanic has the necessary training, experience and equipment to correctly service your car. Property management is similar in that regard. Do you have current knowledge of real estate trends to assess maximum rent? Experience in marketing a property? Are you able to screen potential tenants? Do you know what clauses to include in your lease? Is your nephew able to document the condition your tenant receives an apartment in so as wear and tear is differentiated from tenant neglect? What if your tenant unexpectedly loses their job and can’t pay rent? How do you manage with Israeli bureaucracy? How do you help overseas investors? Making an investment in the booming Israeli market is a smart move. It’s all about location and demand. For optimum financial return and peace of mind you need to hire a property manager who delivers more than just the promise of professional service. After meeting with you and absorbing your vision for your property, we dedicate ourselves to achieving your goals. We are your advocate, your eyes and ultimately YOU in a remote setting. We offer a full maintenance and concierge service for vacation 10

homes and classic property management services for investment properties. What does this include? Each management agreement is specifically tailored to the owner and the property. We investigate ways to improve the property and can oversee construction projects. We advertise the property, screen tenants, negotiate professional leases and document the property’s condition when the renter moves in and out. In addition, we collect deposits, rent, ensure utilities are paid and deal with the insurance company when a maintenance emergency occurs. Maintenance is a huge advantage of hiring our company. Here in Israel, reliable skilled technicians are surprisingly difficult to get a hold of, especially on erev chag. When handled by us, your maintenance will be efficiently dealt with by our team of professionals who offer reasonable prices due to the volume of business we give them. Do you also work with properties in which the owners reside? We offer a unique service — Property Home — answering the needs of busy homeowners who want home maintenance but just don’t have the time to find and contact, get quotes from and oversee service professionals. Or they just don’t speak the language. By signing up for this care package, they have peace of mind knowing things will be taken care of and knowing how much the cost will be. What does your company offer above others? We think it is crucial to utilize our knowledge and experience to take care of your investments as if they were our own, tailoring our service to your individual property needs at the best possible rates. The filter for each decision made is… ‘What would I do if this was my property?’ We are exclusively dedicated to this and can confidently say we are the best you will find. Property Point Management offers its services in Jerusalem and Beit Shemesh. Office: Rechov Yavneh 7, Ramat Beit Shemesh A, 02-966-3777

The Men Behind
Handymench Interview with Dave and Moshe of The HandyMench Handyman Services
How did The HandyMench come to be?
What is your favorite type of job?
We understood that there was a gap in the market. It was very hard to find a reliable handyman who was thorough and willing to give things the proper time and attention. We wanted to be able to ease people’s minds by repairing their homes right the first time and offering them a guarantee on the work performed.
We don’t really have a favorite; we enjoy all the jobs we do. Most of all, we like having a satisfied customer.
What types of services do you provide? We do just about everything that one would need to upkeep their home, from installing bug screens to air conditioning and everything in between. This includes small electrical like lights, fans, outlets and switches; small plumbing like snaking drains, repairing small leaks, resetting toilets, and replacing toilet mechanisms; building and repairing pergolas and sukkahs; painting; locksmith work; glass replacement in windows and doors; furniture repair. We even do small moving jobs.
Do you have staff who work with you? Yes we do. We just hired a great guy – we only hire people we can trust. We know how important our personal service is to the customer, and we will only hire someone who can do as good a job or better.
What types of projects do you spend most of your time on? Replacing locks, small painting jobs, hanging light fixtures and fans, repairing outlets, unclogging and replacing sink traps. 12

SEPTEMBER 2016
What is the secret to customer satisfaction in your field? I don’t think it’s a secret. It’s fairly simple: you must treat people well and do the job right from the beginning without ever cutting corners.
What percentage of your jobs is from referrals of previous clients? About 70%. Our reputation of getting the job done professionally, with a smile, and cleaning up afterwards is something that people are looking for. Our customers are very happy to pass our names onto their friends and family.
What if you come across a problem that you can’t solve? It’s rare but it does happen. We always explain to the customer what the problem is, why we can’t solve it, and possibly refer them to someone who can. If we don’t know what the solution is, we always research it and call the customer back when we find the answer.
What are the most common areas people should check before renting or buying a home? The standard things to check if you are buying a home are: the electric infrastructure, the air conditioning, and the hot water systems. If you are renting, here’s my
Bizness Magazine

recommendation: check the window screens. It’s something most people forget and later regret. Also it’s always a good idea to get the previous tenant’s number and ask if there were any leaks and if the landlord is responsive in taking care of repairs.
Do you offer a guarantee on your work? Yes, we do we offer our “worry-free guarantee.” If we worked on it and it doesn’t work the way it should, we will come back — no ifs, ands, or buts.
What do you do if you accidentally damage something while in someone’s home? Accidents do happen. It is possible that we might drop something, like a screwdriver, and it lands on something fragile, like a table or a chair. The first thing we do is tell the owner, and the second is that we fix or replace the item.
Can you give us an example? A few weeks ago we were working in a very old building, in what seemed to me like an apartment that had been split into two. We were hanging some shelves for a young woman, and I accidentally drilled through the wall. That wall must have been five centimeters thin, by far the thinnest I had ever encountered. I had made a hole all the way through the wall to the neighbor’s side. I, of course, told the owner who went next door and told them. As you can imagine they were less than impressed. They came over to talk to us, all geared up for a fight, we calmly explained that we were going to fix it, and that they had nothing to worry about. I don’t think they believed us. We spackled the wall and went back a second time to sand it smooth. We even went back a third time just to check that it was to their satisfaction. On that last visit they thanked us and told us not to worry. I think they were a little surprised!
What makes The HandyMench unique? In our industry, it’s a common practice to give a price quote
based on the way a home looks – if you enter a mansion, they get one price, and if you enter a run-down rental, they get another. We don’t do that. We have fixed prices for things and are always happy to give you an estimate up front. We also understand that no one likes to have work done and have a mess left behind, so we make sure to leave a room cleaner than when we got there. Providing great service and cleaning up really well is truly the company’s motto.
How should someone prepare for a HandyMench visit? The first thing they should do is to make a list of everything they want us to take care of. It helps everyone: it helps us get a complete picture to set up an efficient work order, and it helps the customer so they don’t forget anything. When a customer sets an appointment with us, it’s also very helpful to give as much detail as possible so we can prepare accordingly.
What do you enjoy most about what you do? We enjoy fixing things. We enjoy the interactions with the customers, and we like the challenges.
How does the service charge work? We price things by the item not by time, as we think its the most honest way to charge. Items vary from 30 NIS to 300 NIS depending on the item. The service charge is 250 NIS + 17% VAT, that is our minimum charge to visit a home. Here’s how it works: Anything under 250 NIS will be charged 250 NIS; anything over will include the 250 NIS. We’ll use light fixtures as an example. We charge 120 NIS for installing a standard light fixture, if all you have is that, it will cost you 250 NIS + VAT. If you have two light fixtures it will still cost you 250 NIS + VAT. If you have three light fixtures, it will cost 360 NIS + VAT.

Silver Lining of the Industry
The Interview with
Meir Simah of Otzar HaMelech
How many years have you been working with silver, and how did you begin? I have been working with silver for 34 years. I wanted to learn a profession in the arts, so I learned to be a metalsmith. After doing a year-long course, I bought all the necessary materials and starting practicing with basics. I worked in different factories to gain experience, including a silver factory in Beit El, which gave me the desire to work with silver over gold. In 1985, I went to the best silversmith school in France, where I was very successful. When I married and returned to Israel, I was offered a job in that same factory in Beit El, but I realized that I wanted to work independently. I starting working from home — fixing, buying, and selling items. What items do you currently offer? I sell any type of silver item available, but only from the best brands. There is no shortage of lesser quality silver available, and I will not sell such items, even if that’s what customers want. I don’t sell to you, rather I buy for you. From the high-quality brands that I work with, I pick only the best of their items to have in stock. That being said, I can also special order an item that a customer may see elsewhere. I often get calls from clients telling me they are in a store and see a particular item, but they are not sure if it is a good price or high quality. I ask them to send me a picture by email or Whatsapp for an immediate assessment. If I have the same item, I can usually offer them a cheaper price. If I don’t, I can usually get back to them right away with a quote for ordering it. For the chagim, like Chanuka, Sukkot, and Pesach, I bring in a larger selection of items and try to give the best prices possible, because I understand that there are a lot of expenses during those times. I also do all silver repairs, whether the item was purchased from me originally or not. Why are your prices generally cheaper? My prices are usually between 10-40% cheaper than stores. Since I work independently from my home store, I don’t have the overhead costs of a big store, like rent and workers, so I can offer the best prices. What other advantages are there to purchasing from you? My service. After the purchase, I don’t give a guarantee, but I give service. For example, if a customer bought a chanukiya, and there was a problem with it, I would either fix it for free or replace it. I will apply pressure to the original company until they replace a faulty item. I simply don’t take “there’s nothing we can do about it” for an answer. Do you have options for people who don’t want to spend money on sterling silver items? 14

SEPTEMBER 2016
We have a large selection of combination items, including silver with crystal or wood and silver plated. These items have become a very popular substitute for those looking for more affordable items. Again, I only bring in the best quality available. Tell us about your new engraving machine. Something that was missing in Beit Shemesh was the option to engrave on silver, so we have recently purchased an engraving machine. My son, who’s a graphic artist, works with me. We offer computerized engraving with next day service. Besides engraving names onto silver, we can engrave designs, logos, and decorations onto any type of metal, wood, and even plastic. Basically anything except glass. Are all your clients from Beit Shemesh? I have a lot of clients that come from out of the city, usually because they were disappointed by the service they got in other places. Many of my clients have gone and checked elsewhere, but they always come back to me for the selection, price and service. Any tips on how to preserve your silver? When people come to buy an item, I always show them how to clean it, because I want it to stay as nice as possible. I won’t sell an item without teaching the customer how to protect it. I also sell an amazing silver cleaning agent that I have tested against many other products on the market. When silver is left out, it gets oxidized. If you don’t clean it, it will start getting yellow, then darker and darker, until it turns black. Don’t wait until it gets black. Clean it when it’s yellow with a good cleaning agent and a simple kitchen towel. I am happy to show people how to properly clean and shine their silver, even if they haven’t bought it from me. What about all the interesting home remedies, like toothpaste or baking soda and tin foil? These remedies are good when the items are already black and need to be properly cleaned. However, when you need to shine and protect silver, you should use a special silver cleaning agent.

Choreographing a
Beautiful Event
Interview with Michal Kaye, of Events Israel What is event production?
Who are your clients?
Event production refers to a company that coordinates and plans all aspects of an event whether it be a family or business event. We help the client find the location for their event, music, photography, gifts for their guests, flowers, themes, transportation, hotels; you name it, we do it.
My clients are English speakers from around the world who are planning an event in Israel, as well as English speakers who are living in Israel. I have recently started to work within the Israeli community but it’s more in regard to business events.
How did you get into the world of event planning? Since I was a small child I had helped my mother in her catering and events business. After 10 years in nonprofit, planning events and conferences, I made aliyah and ended up working in high tech as a change so opening Events Israel was an accident actually. About six years ago, one of my mother ’s friends from Toronto needed help planning her daughter ’s wedding in Israel. My mother offered my help, even though I was working in hi-tech at the time. However, I was able to multitask. That was my first wedding I planned and coordinated. A week later I had another wedding and so on. Hence, Michal K. Events Israel was born.
What types of events do you run? I work on weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, family occasions, business meetings and events.
How do you walk the fine line between organizing everything efficiently and not controlling the client? Every client is different and needs help in different ways. Some need to have their hands held the whole time and sometimes they just need you to guide them. As long as you are always in communication with the client, you can be on top of everything and allow the client to choose the right path for themselves.
How do you help bridge the gap between Anglo clients and Israeli businesses? After six years working in the business I know how to ask the questions that the client might not know to ask. I make sure that the contracts cover the client as much as possible and just being the go-between reduces the client’s frustration.
What is the main difference between organizing simchas and corporate events?
out from the budget.
A family event or simcha has a lot more emotion involved in contrast to a corporate event, which is about business. Most event producers will say that with a family event, 50% of our time is being a therapist to all sides involved.
How long do you need to properly plan a wedding?
What should a client expect from an event planner? Discretion - The level of discretion between an event producer and a client is like a doctor-patient confidentiality agreement. Attentive Listening - I always listen to what a client wants and plan accordingly. Usually I can gauge what venues and vendors to recommend because I have listened to what the client wants and work with them to create the event they want. Creativity - Planning an event is not just about booking the vendors, but it is also thinking about how it all comes together; from the invitations, to the napkin color, to the menu. Some clients don’t have a clue where to start or what they want their event to look like. They always know what they want it to feel like; so as an event planner I have to work with the client to refine an idea and go with it.
What are some important things to be careful about when planning an event? Make sure you read every contract. I translate my contract for my clients if they don’t have it in English so, even if they have to sign the Hebrew one, they can still understand what they are signing. If the client has the budget, they should add an extra 10% just in case. Sometimes you need to know you have a little leeway overall.
Is an event planner only practical for those with a bigger budget? I have done events for all budgets. Some people want to have someone else worrying about all the big arrangements and little details. It’s worth it in the end, even if it takes
I have put together a wedding in three weeks. Sometimes I have had a year and a half, but it always ends ups being finalized at the last minute. In Israel, there is no real amount of time that we would say is the appropriate amount of time for planning an event.
How is event planning similar to choreography? It is choreography - event planning is logistics and making sure it all works together to create a beautiful event.
Do you have professionals who you can recommend to your clients for their events? I work with a lot of amazing vendors, all of whom are English speakers so my clients feel comfortable on that special day. But if a client wants me to check out someone who has been recommended to them by their friends (as friends always recommend), I love meeting new vendors and seeing if it is the right fit for them.
With so many details to tend to, something is bound to go wrong once in a while. Any interesting stories to share? Not really. Even if something goes wrong, my job is to fix it and only, maybe, tell the client at the end of the event. As long as it is fixed, they don’t have to know what went wrong. One of my favorite stories is when a rabbi thought the wedding was a day later even though we spoke to him the previous day. He told us that he was not going to make the chuppa before sunset. Thankfully we were able to find another rabbi, and the bride and groom where just happy that they could have their sunset chuppa. Sometimes it’s about being flexible and understanding that we can’t control everything.

A Recreational Center for the
Whole Family
How long has the Mishor Adumim bowling alley existed? The Mishor Adumim bowling alley was established ten years ago by Shimon Shem-Tov, who wisely anticipated the future development of the Mishor Adumim industrial area. What is your business background, and what changes has Good Lanes brought with it? I have a Masters’ degree in clinical child psychology from Tel Aviv University, but after completing my studies I decided not to continue in that field and instead I joined my father in business. During our lunch breaks my father and I would sometimes come to the Mishor Adumim bowling alley. That’s where the connection began. I became increasingly attached to the place and to bowling, and later on I joined the local league. The decision to run the bowling alley came out of a love for the place and the game, as well as the potential that I saw here. Our company – Good Lanes Ltd. – started running the place in June of this year. We set ourselves a goal of upgrading and turning the bowling alley into a recreational center for the whole family. Who are your customers? Although we have all types of customers, it’s mostly religious or haredi Anglo families that come to our establishment. Since we opened the play area we also have a lot of mothers coming with toddlers. Our coffee bar is right next to the play area so they can relax while older children enjoy video games and bowling. In the later night we also have youth coming to bowl or play billiards and to enjoy themselves at the restaurant/coffee bar, as well as at the new sitting area we’ve created outside. Why do people come to you from Jerusalem and the surrounding area? People from Jerusalem are drawn mainly by the warm, intimate, family atmosphere we have here, and also by the high-quality parquet and bowling lanes, which provide the best game experience in the region. There’s also our excellent service, the cleanliness, and the range of recreational possibilities. In addition, there’s lots of convenient parking, and the drive here is fast because there are no traffic jams, we’re just 10 minutes from Mount Scopus. Do Israelis really enjoy bowling, or is it more of an American experience? Israelis love bowling, too. They’re less familiar with it than American families are, and it’s not really as much a part of Israeli culture but once they’re exposed to it they generally get hooked on the game and continue to play regularly. 18

Interview with
Avichai Goodman
of the Good Lanes Bowling Alley, Mishor Adumim That’s another one of our goals: to try and bring the culture of bowling, with its enjoyment and sociability, to Israelis. Tell us about your league. There’s a local league, which meets on Tuesday evenings, for all levels. The league is very supportive of new players and provides guidance in a fun environment. The top players represent Mishor Adumim in national competitions. We also want to set up leagues for kids and youth. We have bowling coaches who would be glad to serve as instructors for bowling clubs. Anyone interested in joining is invited to contact us. What about birthdays or fun days for groups? We offer a birthday party program that includes tables set with helium balloons, snacks, candies, and unlimited cold drinks for participants; a bowling game with prizes; and to top it off, pizza for the entire group. It’s much easier for the parents than to organize the birthday themselves. All they need to do is show up. And of course the kids love it. In addition, any group can hire out the entire bowling alley for an occasion. Sometimes families do this to celebrate an adult birthday; sometimes other big groups (yeshivot, schools, corporations) want to plan a fun day. We’re flexible about providing whatever the group needs, including food (either from here or from the catering service of their choice), music, and whatever other services might be necessary. What do you enjoy most about your work? We like to see our customers having fun, enjoying the experience, and creating good memories. We’re always thinking about how to advance and develop the place further. Since we took over, the physical appearance, the level of maintenance, the atmosphere, and the service have improved considerably. All of this is reflected in the positive feedback we receive. People thank us for making it so much fun. What’s the secret to success in this business? First of all – hard work and investment on the part of the management and the staff; everyone has to feel committed to a common goal. Also, aspiring to excellence, constant upgrading, attentiveness to the needs and wishes of the customers, and being flexible to them, while at the same time keeping up with technological and social change. It’s all geared to maximize the fun. 02-590-9353 bowling.adumim@gmail.com http://bowling-adumim.com Find us on bowlingadumim

Is your child consistently left out of games or conversations and doesn’t know how to join or shmooze with others? ••• Is your child smart, personable and mature but never gets invited over by friends? ••• Did you move to a new apartment, but it’s already two years and you can’t seem to connect with the neighbors? ••• Is your daughter leaving for seminary but is scared she will not develop any friendships? ••• Are you going to shul or riding the bus, sitting next to the same people day after day, but have no idea how to communicate with them? ••• In short, do you see the world moving around you, with people connecting to one another on all levels and participating in life, while you seem to remain on the sidelines?
Perhaps I can help you or your child live a fuller, more positive, more productive life. WHO IS MRS. SHAINDEL COHEN? Mrs. Cohen is an internationally acclaimed educational consultant and social skills specialist who has lectured in Israel, England, Canada, Mexico, and throughout the United States. She specializes in nurturing the shy and selective mute child and has designed and taught programs related to this field such as communication and friendship issues, assertiveness training and self-esteem, social skills, conflict resolution and much much more. She is available to work with children, teens and adults on any related social skills challenges.
Why doesn’t my child get invited over by friends? Question: My daughter is one of the oldest in her first grade class. She is my oldest child and my only girl. She is smart, very mature and has a lot of personality. She can be a leader, although she is sometimes bossy. She loves company and constantly needs friends to play with. Her teacher says that she is very sociable in school and the girls like her. Sometimes she is even too busy playing during recess to eat her snack. Every week my daughter goes through her “friend list” and calls girls from her class to invite them over. Sometimes a friend comes and sometimes no one is available. My big question is - why doesn’t my daughter ever get invited over to a friend’s house? When friends come to my house they have a good time. They can come a few times but they don’t invite her back. Why do you think this is happening? Answer: Friendship must be reciprocal and obviously something is happening that is not reciprocal. It may be that children are coming to your house because of your nice toys or great treats or because your daughter is available, but not necessarily because the friend shares common interests with your daughter. You say that she can be bossy and likes to be a leader. Being a good sport requires letting others also have fun and not dominating the activity. It requires a host to let her guest choose first what to play and not boss her around and it requires your daughter not to criticize her guest in any way. This means that comments such as “You’re a cheater!” “You’re out!” “That’s a babyish game to play!” are totally inappropriate when hosting a friend. Praising a friend often, even when she makes a bad move and avoiding arguments at all costs will help your daughter keep her friends. Teach her the art of negotiation, help her learn to suggest a change in the activity or switching positions so that her friend won’t get bored with her. “How about if you be the mommy now and I’ll be the baby?” “How about if I turn the rope and you jump?” My suggestion to you as a mother would be to monitor her play sessions from an adjoining room and try to figure out what is going wrong. When you hear your daughter breaking basic rules of friendship, gently and privately call her out and remind her. Soon, not only will she be socially correct, she will soon be sought after as a playmate of choice by her classmates. Hatzlacha!

Complete Magnificence Interview with Hanna Saadon, Architect and Interior Designer
Hanna graduated with a degree in architecture and interior design in Jerusalem in 2011. She then went to France and worked in prestigious Parisian agencies for three years, focusing on upscale renovations of private residences and luxurious hotels. After three years in Paris, Hanna returned to Israel with her expertise.
What services does your company provide? My company’s name of Archi & Design Office is a clear definition of my job: architecture and design. Unlike traditional architecture or design agencies, I offer my clients a complete service, both architecture and design. How did you get started in Israel? Upon returning to Israel, many friends of mine from France approached me to renovate their apartments. It was then that I felt it was the time for me to start my own company as a French-English-Hebrew speaking architect firm. Real estate agencies and young companies like Sweetinn have asked me to renovate and furnish their short term rental apartments. Through these experiences, I learned autonomy and strong professional organizational skills while advancing my expertise in both architecture and interior design. I have had the opportunity to work on high-end projects and design hotels in collaboration with talented designers. What inspired you to go into the field? I think that my personality brought me 20

to where I am today. I love my job and every project is like a new adventure for me. My parents taught me to always have my eyes open, to look at what’s around me, and to analyze everything I see. I always wanted to be creative and see things in an original way. What is the difference between architecture and interior design? Technically, there is a big difference between architecture and interior design; but architecture and interior design are very similar to one another. In fact, architecture and design are necessarily linked. To develop a livable space, architecture is the first step, and design is the end of the mission. Architecture is about the structural works (plumbing, electricity, air conditioning/heating, etc.). Interior design is more about the style you want to give the structure you’ve started to create. For example, the walls you have drawn need a facing material, the
plumbing points are waiting for their faucets, and so on. If you are using a very experienced contractor, is there really a need for an architect? Unfortunately, this is a question I’ve heard so many times from people who decided to renovate a home for the first time. The architect is supposed to control everything at every moment. Mishaps can happen and do happen at worksites! You have your life, your job, and your everyday troubles. Therefore, you need to have the ability to rely on someone professional who runs the whole project, and is able to deal with the contractors and suppliers. How can using an interior designer and architect actually save you money? Losing money is a major fear when embarking upon a building project. So it’s clear that saving money is more than one of the client’s expectations when hiring an interior designer! The client expects his architect to bring
him a capital gain and take the responsibility of the project in his arms. Running a project is not a simple activity. You have to draw blueprints for every centimeter of the home, you have to choose materials with taste (yours and the client’s!), you have to manage deadlines, budgets, and the relationships between everyone who is working on the project; which include the contractors, the suppliers, and the client. What do you think can be improved in the building industry in Israel? I think that Israeli architects are very talented, but foreign designers can bring a lot to the industry. Israel is a relatively new country and welcomes a lot of tourists and olim chadashim. It has to adapt itself to the personality of the new Israelis who are coming with their culture and their vision of architecture and design. 058-650-9213 hannaoik@gmail.com www.BIZNESSMAGAZINE.com

Keeping Your
Pipes Clear Interview with Bar Tzvi Septic Truck Services
Tell us about the services you provide. We are plumbing, water and sewage professionals. We provide reliable service, attractive prices and we guarantee the best work. Our services include: sewer work, solar water heater (dud shemesh) installation, solar panel installation, thermal photography, leak detection, gutter repair, pumping factory and institutional seepage pits, and pipe and sewage system replacement. We provide service in Jerusalem and the surrounding areas, Ma’ale Adumim, Beit Shemesh, Modi’in and Gush Dan. How long have you been in business? We’ve been in business for over 25 years (three generations!) and have thousands of satisfied and loyal customers. What is a septic truck? A septic truck, or “biuvit”, is a special kind of truck that has sophisticated equipment. Most of the large plumbing companies, have special cameras that can photograph the sewer from inside in order to find out what is causing the blockage. The septic truck also has two tanks: one vacuums the contents of the sewer with a long hose, and the other pumps water into the pipes and rinses them out so that we can be sure that everything is totally clean afterwards. In cases of flooding, such as in a parking garage or basement, water can be pumped out with the help of the septic truck. How does it work? We use pressure to unclog pipes. The truck can clear a blockage with very strong pressure (160 bar) using water. A strong, targeted stream of water comes out of a special pipe, where the stream can open up the blockage and wash it away. The advantage of using water is that the pipe also gets a general cleaning, which will help prevent future blockage by washing away any grease buildup that has started to collect on the pipes. It is important to use a knowledgeable company for opening any blockages, as the method of clearing a blockage can vary according to what the cause of the blockage is. A reputable company should also explain to the client how to avoid such blockages in the future. What types of institutions and businesses use your services? Not only private homes and apartment buildings need the services of septic trucks. There are many large businesses such as restaurants, hotels, gas stations and factories, as well as institu22

tions like hospitals whose sewage systems are complex and who use their sewage systems at a very high frequency. They need our services on a regular basis in order to keep everything in working order and to prevent any future sewage problems. Additionally, the law prohibits throwing grease into the regular sewage pipes, in order to prevent pollution, etc.; therefore in every institution that has a kitchen, or uses grease for other purposes, they have a grease trap where they drain all their oils. When it fills up, we pump it out –with our septic truck – and dump the grease in an approved site. Why are there so many plumbing problems in Israel? There are sewage systems all over the country that have been built improperly or are very old. As a result, there are many problems such as blockage, unsuitable pipes, incorrect installation of infrastructure and more. Our septic trucks can temporarily solve these problems by pumping out the water and drying these areas. These issues occur frequently during the winter when it rains and the water drains mostly to one
Bizness Magazine
02 999 3939
place – this is the main reason for flooding. Another reason for problems, such as blockages, is homeowners’ failure to properly maintain their homes’ sewer systems. It’s important to remember not to throw paper or anything else into the toilet. The sewage system is very sensitive and we need to treat it with care. What causes recurring problems in sewage systems? Sometimes improper use can cause problems, like blockages. In addition, an old sewage system also leads to recurring problems. Generally, one should replace the pipes every 20 years. In many cases, rusty, cracked pipes are very problematic and there’s no choice but to replace the pipes or the entire system. A well-established and experienced company will be able to examine your system and even replace it for you if necessary. Once it was much harder to find where the problem was coming from, but today the sophisticated equipment and the advanced technology available have made it possible to quickly get to the root of the problem and then act accordingly. An ordinary run-of-the-mill plumber who doesn’t have the necessary equipment won’t be able to help in these instances. What usually causes a blockage? There are various explanations for what causes a blockage: 1. Tree roots penetrating into the sewer 2. Accumulation of oil and dirt which then turn into hard clumps inside the sewage tunnels 3. Disposal of items such as cotton balls, baby wipes, hygiene products, Q-tips, and diapers into the sewage system. It’s not a good idea to try and open a blockage on your own. If you’re not a professional this can cause more damage to the system. Our plumbing company has special cameras, which help us to find the source of the problem very quickly. Without professional service, a plumbing problem is liable to shut off an entire house or business. How do these cameras work? Even in the plumbing world, technology has really helped us to advance. The camera is connected to a screen which allows us to identify in real time what the cause of a problem is if there is something broken or if there is a leak or blockage in a pipe or manhole. This sophisticated equipment benefits both the customer and our company. It is especially beneficial to our customers because it saves the extra expense (money and time) of having to break walls in order to find the leak or the reason for the blockage. It’s also very helpful for us because it saves us time and extra manpower. Thanks to the camera the work gets done in an effi-
cient and timely manner. In addition, the customer receives a disc at the end with pictures of the inside of the pipe. Do you have other high-tech equipment? Another area that our company specializes in is a thorough check and repair of maza”chim -moneh zrima chozeret (backflow prevention device). Every place and business that uses two different sources of liquids has installed a backflow preventer. This system needs to be under supervision and tested annually. It is important to note that in order to install, repair or even to check a backflow preventer, a company needs to be certified by the Ministry of Health. In addition, our company specializes in the purification and disinfection of water reservoirs. There are buildings that have water reservoirs on their roof, which need to be checked and purified every few months. Our company has been accredited by the Ministry of Health in order to be able to provide this special service. When should one call the plumber to find the source of a leak? When you see that your water bills are higher than in previous months, or you notice the paint peeling from a specific place on the wall or there are signs of mold on the walls or ceilings, it’s time to call the plumber. We can locate the leak quickly and efficiently. In many cases, we find more than one leak and can fix everything before too much damage is caused. If you have home insurance, there’s a large chance that the insurance company will be able to cover the expenses for the leak damage and repairs. We can provide a detailed report describing where the leak is located so that you know the exact location of the leak in your home. For those of us who live in apartments, how can you tell if the leak is coming from ours or the neighbors’ home? When it comes to residential apartment buildings, it may be difficult to know if the leak is coming from the neighbor or not. You’ll need to investigate. The best way to check is with a professional plumbing company who can locate the leak. If you (hopefully) are on good terms with your upstairs neighbors, you’ll be able to share the expenses with them if the leak is discovered to be coming from their apartment – which is usually what happens.

Interview with
Netanel Buta
Element Omanut be-Etz
Where Carpentry
Meets Art What is Element Omanut be-Etz (Wood Design)? We’re a boutique company that provides quality, personalized garden and patio design services. We use a variety of different types of wood and other high-quality materials to offer special, non-standard design possibilities that give the finished product a unique appearance, such as combining different colors of wood, suited to the client’s tastes and requests. We accompany the client from the planning stage – including design and three-dimensional imaging – to the finished product. Our company specializes in building American-style houses, pergolas and decks, wooden storerooms and tzimmers, fences and stairways, as well as laying synthetic grass and landscaping gardens. How did you start out? Wood has been part of my life since childhood; it’s part of the world I grew up in. My grandfather was a building contractor, and my uncle was a builder who worked with wood. Element Omanut be-Etz was established in 2009, and since then, we’ve worked in many different parts of the country. It’s very important to me to keep up with new products and techniques, and every year I visit exhibitions and factories in Europe where I am inspired by new ideas that I can offer clients. I’m also a licensed building contractor for Etz ve-Etza, and I completed their wood construction and painting courses. Over the past two years we’ve introduced color woods, which bring new life and vitality into a sphere which was previously fixed and static. Who is your staff? I’m proud to say that we have a highly-qualified, all-Jewish staff. I have three professional workers who have been with us 24

from the start. We provide our workers with the most advanced tools for efficient and effective work. Tell us about some special projects you’ve worked on lately. One special project that I completed recently included a special luxury area with wall cladding, a Jacuzzi and sauna, surrounded by a deck and covered with a pergola, creating a magical, relaxing outside area. We used Douglas Fir with a brushed finish and Burmese Teak for the wall cladding and the floor. I enjoyed the work and it turned out superbly. Another project was a deck and patio with a unique, interesting combination of colors that created a very impressive result. An interesting color scheme can produce beautiful results, even without using the most expensive materials.

How do you adapt a project to suit not only the client’s requests, but also his budget? The first stage starts with determining what the client wants for his yard. On that basis, we create a plan within the confines of the budget. I must emphasize that I’m not willing to provide cheap, shoddy work at a low price. I believe in quality. I prefer to remove a few elements from the project, while still achieving the client’s vision, than compromise on quality. Do you define yourself as more of a carpenter or an artist? I define myself as an artist in wood, as in the name “Element Omanut be-Etz”. The idea of the company is to provide creative, non-standard solutions. When I sit with a client, I have a picture of the finished work in my mind, and the client usually ends up choosing what I propose. Is there any particular treatment for wood that can protect it from the hot Israeli sun? It depends on the item. For a pergola, the wood and paint must be stronger from the outset, and it’s a good idea to wash off dust once a year and to repaint every six years, depending on the type of paint used. For a deck, maintenance should be done annually, including a proper cleaning with a high-pressure hose and an oil coating. Maintenance is not as frightening as it sounds – it’s not hard work. Just as one has do gardening upkeep every two months, so too, the deck needs a yearly treatment to maintain a clean, fresh look. Tell us about the sukkah pergolas that you build. A kosher sukkah pergola is a creative solution that offers a stylish, shady pergola during the year that becomes a kosher le-mehadrin sukkah for Sukkot. It’s built in such a way that no steel is touching the standing pillars or the crossbeams. The crossbeams are connected using a unique, strong, drawer-like technique that requires no nails. Our kosher sukkah pergolas lend the garden and yard a touch of luxury. The client can also order different types of walls for the sukkah that open and close. How can one maximize space in a small garden? Planning a small garden is a challenge because one has to fit all the elements that the client wants into a smaller space. I recommend a deck and synthetic grass, with trees and plants included in the deck area. Of course, special attention must be given to lighting and an irrigation system. Adding hanging plants and building flower boxes into the sides maintain a green and colorful appearance while saving space.
Which item do you build most often? It’s difficult to name just one item, because our projects are generally all-in-one solutions for gardens and yards, including decks, pergolas, wooden fences, synthetic grass, and a smart electrical system. What effect does an attractive garden have on the home? A well-designed, tidy garden is a continuation of the home and invites you to sit outdoors and enjoy the tranquility. A wellplanned, shady garden makes the house feel bigger, because the yard becomes integral to relaxation and quality time spent with family and friends. Is it different working with Anglo clients? Do they want different things? Absolutely. The Anglo clientele appreciates professional workmen, and they put an emphasis on quality materials and good work. It’s easy for me to communicate with them because they understand what I want to give them. They don’t have fixed ideas, they’re open to new and different suggestions. What do you enjoy most about your work? I get enjoyment from what I do every single day. I like seeing an area that was empty or neglected turn into a place where it’s nice to sit and entertain, like a picture from a catalog. My greatest enjoyment is when I get positive feedback from clients and see how happy they are with the results. 050-676-3222 www.wooden-pergolas.co.il www.facebook.com/elementwood

Restoring Responsibility By Shlomo Perkins
T
owards the beginning of every Perkins One Brain session, we work on restoring responsibility, or ownership, of your pain and challenges. This is not the scolding that you may have heard throughout your life, such as “be responsible for your actions,” or “you brought this upon yourself.” The responsibility we practice is of an entirely different nature. It’s not unforgiving and angry. Notice the word choice I used above. I wrote “restoring responsibility.” Why restoring? Because in the state you’re in now, you’re physically irresponsible for your emotions. This is why you’ve come for help. Our survival mechanisms, along with our behavioral patterns, take away our free will. We function on autopilot. This may have served us well in the past, but it’s not what we want anymore. So first, in order to start taking responsibility, you must understand that you have not been functioning from a place of choice. If we have no choice over our reactions, and are not taking responsibility, then what are we doing? There are two methods in our toolbox. First of all, we tend to blame other people: “Because of him, I feel like this.” Second of all, we can become preoccupied with the “faults” of those around us instead of focusing on ourselves. These are natural human reactions, but we want to go above this. During the restoration of responsibility, I ask who you blame for what you’re going through. I also ask who bothers you with their behavior. You tell me names of people in your life. I verify which one or ones are correct in accordance with muscle checking (as established in my previous articles). Once we define who’s blocking your responsibility, I use muscle checking again to locate the proper energy exercise to release this blockage. During this exercise, you talk about the people you blame or who bother you. The combined speaking and exercise release your thoughts and feelings, allowing you to start taking responsibility. Once you’ve accepted the natural blame of others and have released it, you’ve now taken responsibility, or ownership, of your session’s issue. This is a positive step in the right direction. However, it’s just the beginning. Once you’ve regained your focus on your own actions and emotions, you’re ready to start making a change. This is 26

the springboard for the rest of your session and the rest of your life. Our method at Perkins One Brain is gentle. It’s logical that we haven’t taken responsibility. We shouldn’t be judged. This is how we, as humans, function and have learned to function. The first step is to be comfortable enough to stop denying our lack of responsibility. This can sometimes be scary. People will judge and hurt those who have not taken responsibility, or even those who admit to past failures. At Perkins One Brain, we provide a safe setting of acceptance, without judgment of your past; a place where you can start developing your responsibility and the life you want to lead. We are all equal and in this together.

A Walk Through the Forest By Meryl Cohen
I
have a passion for trees. This passion took root while I was living in Columbus, Ohio, shooting pictures of trees at the Dawes Arboretum. Thus began my journey of painting trees. To me, trees are figurative, representing man in many shapes and forms. They help sustain us in this world. Trees convey longevity and rootedness to the land. It was also in Columbus that I developed my current style of working, that I call fabric fusion. I freely combine acrylic paint, black and white photography, and a wide range of colorful handdyed and textured fabrics to create an entirely new and spiritually charged experience of the everyday world. Trees connect us to the highest of Jewish values. In the prayer service, we say that the Torah “is a tree of life to all who grasp it, and whoever holds on to it is happy; its ways are ways of pleasantness, and all it paths are peace.”
I am fascinated by tree trunks as well as by the entire tree. I paint trunks tall and narrow to keep the integrity of their natural form. Additionally, I am fascinated by the arrangement of trees in the forest. My trees can be hung in a variety of different configurations, suggesting immersion in a wooded enclave. While I paint them individually, I often install them in a series of three or more paintings with uneven spacing between them in order to give the viewer a sense of what it feels like to stroll through the forest. My trees hang in many commercial installations throughout Colorado and Texas, one of which is Crested Butte Ski Resort in Colorado, as well as in many private collections throughout the United States. Here in Israel, I have plans to exhibit at the Tel Aviv Opera House, 18.1-5.3.2017. My work can also be found in private homes in Beit Shemesh and Jerusalem and can be viewed at my gallery in Beit Shemesh by private appointment.

A Taste
of America
Interview with Herby
Dan,
founder of Herby’s Bakeshop
What is Herby’s Bakeshop? Herby’s is an authentic American bakery located in Beit El. Our products are available in many Anglo areas in Jerusalem, Beit Shemesh and Gush Etzion. How did you get into the baking industry? When I was in college I was a guest in someone’s home and had the best challah I had ever tasted. I took the recipe from her and during my school vacation I tried it out. During the next vacation, I got another recipe and made caraway seed bread, baked in a coffee can. My brother worked at St. Jude’s Children’s Cancer Research Hospital at the time and I took the bread to a staff meeting there. When they tasted it, they suggested that I should start selling bread. So I did. I was accepted to law school and when I was there I sold bread to about half the faculty. During senior year, we were discussing the business side of law and I kept talking about customers. The dean said,“ In the legal profession we call them clients, not customers.” I guess customers are for bakeries. I even had a sticker made up that said “Herby Dan Baker at Law.” Where did you gain your experience? After I finished law school, I worked for a year in law. But then I decided to open a bakery. I conferred with some other bakeries 28

and went to New York where I worked in quite a few bakeries and bagel stores, gaining a lot of hands-on experience. I also signed up for a course in a baking school after I got married, but in the end, I didn’t go. I did receive a set of reference books for the course and they were very helpful. When did the original Herby’s bakeshop open? I opened Herby’s Bakeshop in the basement of a pharmacy in Memphis in 1979. I was mainly baking challahs and doing home delivery. In January 1980 I took over the kosher bakery in Memphis and learned a lot there. They passed on their recipes for rye bread, donuts, brownies, etc., so we kept up our bakery until we left Memphis in 1986 to make aliyah. How did you bring your dream with you to Israel? For the first few months we were here, I worked in a few different bakeries including Angel’s. I kept baking independently, but didn’t have my own space, so I had to rent facilities from other people. In 1989 we opened in Beit El, starting mostly with challahs, brownies, and cookies. What items do you currently sell? Assorted challahs, cookies, cakes, donuts and regular and wholewheat pies. We also started selling Yerushalmi kugel recently and hope to add potato kugel to our repertoire as well.

What hechsher do you have? Besides our local hechsher we have the OU Israel Mehadrin hechser and are currently in the process of being certified by the Chatam Sofer Bnei Brak hechsher. What’s your most loved item? Our donuts are always popular. Americans miss real American donuts, and the sufganiyot that come out only for Chanukah don’t cut it. We currently deliver donuts to stores three times a week. There was a survey in Jerusalem a few years ago asking people where to get the best sufganiyot/donuts. Herby’s came in second out of all the available donuts in the city. When it came time for the Purim hamantaschen survey, ours were first! Our hamantaschen dough is so good that we actually sell it to the local girls’ school so they can shape their hamantachen in school and bring them home to bake. Parents came raving to me for weeks after about how good the hamantaschen were, and I even got some customers who came just to buy dough. Can people do special orders with you? Since we are a relatively small establishment we have the flexibility to make smaller custom batches to suit our customers’ requests. I like experimenting with making recipes healthier and can make cookies with less sugar, for example. Obviously a special order is still somewhat of a bulk order, so
although I can do a special order for a simcha, we don’t take orders for something like a single cake. Any advice for our readers on how to make the perfect challah at home? The best way to achieve a perfect challah is to pick one recipe and keep tweaking it until it comes out perfect for your tastes. Try increasing or decreasing sugar to control sweetness, eggs and oil to control richness. If you want to use honey, either instead of or in addition to sugar, you will need to use additional yeast. Also play with the oven temperature and baking time. It might take a few weeks of trying, or it might take six months, but once you have the perfect formula you should have the perfect challah. What makes your baked goods more authentic than others? We try to use only high quality ingredients. Also, I offer specialty cookies made with wholewheat or even spelt flour, which has become more popular nowadays. I work hard to make sure I don’t compromise the taste when increasing the nutritional benefits.

DENTAL CENTER
Let’s Hear What Everyone is Smiling About By Dr. Eliyahu Gherman, DDS What is Invisalign®? Invisalign® is a product produced by a California-based company called Align Technology. Align Technology was founded in 1997 and received FDA clearance to market Invisalign® in 1998. The Invisalign® system is a technologically-advanced esthetic approach to treating malocclusions, or poor bites. It uses threedimensional graphic imaging and CAD/CAM technology to create a virtual model of the patient’s teeth. With special software, this model is then manipulated by your orthodontist to form an ideal bite. There are many stages to go through to get from a poor bite to a good bite. In between, the teeth will be at different positions until they reach their final stage. From each of the virtual model’s stages, Align Technology creates an aligner, a clear, nearly invisible appliance that gently moves teeth to the desired final position. How long does Invisalign® take? Each aligner is worn for two weeks and then changed to the new aligner. Typically the treatment will take 5-12 months. However, this will vary based on your bite. Is Invisalign® better than braces? As I have emphasized in previous articles, there is no one orth“Invisalign with Dr. Gherman is everything as advertised. He’s personable and fun. He completely transformed my crooked teeth to an amazingly straight smile! It’s great and easy to use. Invisalign with Dr. G is a must!” – DG- Jerusalem “I was thrilled with the service I received with Dr. Gherman and Invisalign. Everything was explained very clearly, it was easy to make appointments, and the whole process was smooth from beginning to end. I am a professional who does a lot of public speaking and Invisalign never interfered with my job or my social life. My bite is now perfect thanks to Dr. Gherman. I would recommend it to anyone who needs to adjust their teeth and is concerned about how they might look with braces.” – AL- Neve Daniel “My experience with Invisalign was phenomenal! Dr. Gherman took care in explaining the procedure step-by-step and the process ended up being so simple and convenient! I am very pleased with the fantastic results and am grateful to Dr. Gherman for his expertise and professionalism.” – DD- Bet Shemesh

odontic system that is the best for all patients. Your orthodontist must determine if Invisalign® will be best for you. I have been using and studying the Invisalign® system for over ten years and I can tell you if it is right for you. Invisalign® does, however, have many benefits over braces: They are easy to use and hard to break. You can remove them for special occasions, for cleaning your teeth, or to eat some of your favorite foods that you can’t eat with braces. Of course the best part is that they are invisible! Invisalign® recently came out with a new material called SmartTrack which is faster and even more comfortable than the previous material. So how do I know if I am a candidate? Call to set up your free consultation. I am looking forward to helping you achieve the smile you always wanted in the best way possible!

Behind the Seams of Custom Upholstery B
ehind every great man, there is a great woman. And behind every great piece of furniture, there are talented people who design it, build it, and bring it to life. In past articles, we’ve discussed the furniture scene as it is today and how it was in the past. We have given much food for thought and practical tips on how to approach furniture, upholstery and design in general. Now we want to take you on a practical pictorial tour of some of the options we offer our clients, and show you many other design ideas to jumpstart your imagination! First up – upholstery! We might only see the final fabric and shape, but there is a lot of work that goes into making a chair or a sofa comfortable. A basic upholstered piece will consist of the frame, foundation, filling and fabric. The materials used, as well as the craftsman technique, are the things that dictate the quality of the piece and the overall comfort level. Please note that although there are different materials that are considered elite, it all comes down to personal preference.
install springs in a way that will give an even and noise free result. Once the foundation has been assembled, the filling is installed. Feathers: Expansive, fluffy, and old school, feathers have always been considered the crème-de-la-crème of upholstery fillings. They are still available today and can contribute greatly if used correctly. Feathers have a conforming quality, so they conform around your body when you lean on them. This can make for some heavenly comfortable sofa back cushions! However feathers are not so bouncy or supportive, so they are often mixed with other synthetic materials to obtain the right level of bounce and firmness. The use of feathers is quite rare today, mostly on account of their price. But it should be noted that they are out there for those looking for the ultimate result. Foam: Foam comes in many grades. They range from solid and hard to soft and giving. Often we will use two of more types glued together to give solidity with a soft top layer.
The first thing we must consider is the foundation for the filling. Typically there are two main options. Springs: Springs are a hallmark of quality. They offer a type of bounce and support that many old sofas and chairs are renowned for. Typically found in older furniture, springs are not so easy to obtain today!
Elastic belts: Modern furniture most often will use elastic belts to support the filling. There are various qualities in these belts, ranging from rigid to elastic and bouncy. It’s a very economical option, and very good results are achieved.
The choice of which material to use in a specific upholstery job depends on the required end result and the filling intended to be used. It takes experience to anticipate how different materials will work together and what affect they will create. It also takes fine skills to
Synthetics: There are several synthetic fillers used for cushions. These work well and are very affordable.
Fabric: As this is such a wide ranging topic full of personal upholstery design and a diverse range of materials, we will dedicate the next article to the subject. After reading this article you may feel a bit overwhelmed by the amount of options and details to be considered. But we can assure you that it is a very exciting process and there is nothing more satisfying than sitting on a personalized re-upholstered piece for the first time. Having said that, our team of professionals are more than happy to consult with you on the subject and help you with your decisions.

5 Tips
for Outdoor Photography By Moshe Benaim of MB Photography
F
or better or for worse, we live in an age where everyone has a camera at all times, and every moment is worthy of sharing with the masses. But just because you are snapping 50 shots a day, you don’t have to compromise on quality. Here are five tips for how to take the best photos possible with your basic camera or smartphone when you are outdoors and on the go. 1. Know your camera settings Whether you are using a simple digital camera or a smartphone, don’t rely on auto mode. The more control you take of the process, the better results you will see. And you don’t need to be a professional to learn the basic principles of focus, exposure, white balance and ISO that can make mediocre pictures great. For example, when shooting outdoors, select Cloudy or Daylight mode to maximize the light. 2. Follow the light When taking photos outdoors, pay attention to where the light is coming from. Whether it is a street lamp or the midday sun, avoid backlight, unless you are trying to get a silhouette. Side light, on the other hand, gives your image texture and depth, emphasizing the contours of a face or building, and casting shadows that create unique moods. Oftentimes, when shooting outdoors, the best way to take advantage of the sunlight is to use the shade. Shooting a subject under a tree or waiting for the sun to hide behind the clouds allows you to get the benefits of natural light, while avoiding squinty eyes and awkward shadows. Most importantly: don’t use flash! Whether you are using your digital camera or smartphone, the flash is generally harsh. Instead, try to get as much natural light as possible, or change your settings to increase your camera’s exposure and ISO levels. 3. Get perspective What makes an average photo interesting is often not the 32
•
SEPTEMBER 2016
content, but the perspective. When taking pictures outdoors, take advantage of your natural surroundings to tell your story in a unique way. Climb a tree, lay down on the pavement, or shoot between blades of grass to make your subject look unique and highlight specific features. Experiment with angles by taking the same picture from lots of different vantage points to see how different each one really is. 4. Learn about composition Again, you don’t need to be a professional to learn the basic rules of composition that can make a simple photograph look like a work of art. For example, one of the simplest photography principles is the Rule of Thirds, which claims that our eyes are naturally attracted to images that are divided into three parts, with the subject slightly off-center. Use the grid function on your camera to apply this principle easily. Check out other compositions rules, such as leading lines, scale, and framing, to learn how to highlight the best parts of your photograph. 5. Clean your lens This may seem basic, but sometimes the simplest things are the most important. Whether you are pulling your smartphone out of your dusty pocket or using a digital camera at the sandy beach, your lens is probably covered in dust, grime, and fingerprints. Simply wipe the lens with your shirt or a clean cloth to get clearer, sharper images. These simple tips show how easy it is for amateur photographers to transform their basic, everyday pictures into art. So take advantage of the last days of summer, and get outside to capture some everyday beauty.

GETTING THE MOST OUT OF THE MUSIC By Eliyahu Stein
Music sets the atmosphere for an event. When the music is pleasing to the ear, both in quality and decibel, it makes the night more memorable. Even if you have already chosen the musician or the band for your upcoming simcha it’s better to plan the musical program with the musician. Thorough music preparation can make the difference between an ordinary event and a wonderful event. Here are five steps to help plan the music at your event: 1. For a successful event, you will want to plan in detail. Where will the musicians play? Will they need to move from outside of the hall to inside the hall? If you are planning a wedding, how many of the musicians do you want playing at the chuppah? If you are planning an outdoor event, do you have a plan B in case it rains? 2. An event is multifaceted and the music should complement each part. What type of music do you want at the reception? What about music during the meal? Think about when you would like to have the dancing, and for how long it should go on. Make sure that the dancing doesn’t coincide with the main course being served.
4. Good musicians have a large song repertoire, but that doesn’t mean that they know how to play all songs. Make sure that you send them a song list prior to the event so that there won’t be any disappointments. Moreover, some songs have more than one tune so clarify which tune you want either over the phone or in person. 5. During the event itself, be in touch with the band/ musician if there are any changes in the schedule. Whether you’re planning an engagement party, wedding, sheva brachot, bat or bar mitzvah, proper and wellthought out plans for the music to be played will make it a memorable and enjoyable event.
052-5555970 ʯʸʨʹʰʢʸʥʮ ʣʥʣ
3. Music can be very enjoyable, but only when it doesn’t interfere with something else. Are there times during
your event when you don’t want any music? If so, let the musicians know before the event starts.

למען עתיד ילדינו
For The Future Of Our Children
Promoting
Self-Worth and Happiness Interview with Shalom Iskowitz M.Ed, Director of Mentoring and Educational Services and Malky Myers M.Ed, Girls Mentoring Supervisor, Hakshiva For 12 years the Ramat Beit Shemesh community has had the privilege of benefiting from the great work of Hakshiva. Hakshiva has created a unique model with a wide range of services blended into a comprehensive continuum of care to meet the diverse needs of parents and their children. They give families access to tools they need to succeed, all under one roof. These services include mentoring, individual and family therapy, professional referrals, parenting workshops, social skills groups, educational guidance and evaluations, and a youth center which is a safe haven for many different groups of children. The past few years have seen the development of many new and engaging programs making the range and variety of Hakshiva’s services quite different than just a few years ago. The new Homework Center worked with 70 girls from almost every local school this year. Hakshiva’s two-year-old Beit Yaakov Seminar Program is providing an extra-curricular experience that encourages girls to grow as they discuss topics relevant to their everyday lives. I understand that in addition to the many programs Hakshiva offers the Ramat Beit Shemesh community, you are offering mentoring for girls. Can you give us some more information? Mentoring is the process of matching mentors with young people who would benefit from a caring, consistent, and healthy relationship. Understanding the individual needs of the child is the first and most crucial step to facilitate a meaningful relationship. Our intake and matching process were carefully developed with that goal in mind. The program is professionally supervised by a well-trained, sensitive, and committed program manager. Hakshiva’s mentoring model may differ slightly depending on the age of the child. Younger girls typically meet with their mentors bi-weekly according to schedules set up in coordination with parents and mentors. As the girls become more independent, they become more active in forming and personalizing their mentorship. By far the most important role of a mentor is to support and encourage young people, particularly as they struggle to overcome obstacles and solve problems. The mentor listens first and speaks last, enabling children to talk about anything, and reminding the child of her innate value. 34
•
SEPTEMBER 2016
Are certain types of girls more suitable for mentoring than others? Every girl can benefit from mentoring. Preadolescence and adolescence can be a confusing and often lonely time for girls. Biological changes, social shifts, individuation from parents, and academic demands are all part of the complexities and challenges girls experience. A caring and supportive mentor can make normal life struggles more manageable and hopeful. Through belief in herself, coupled with encouragement and guidance by an adult mentor, a young girl can flourish academically, socially, and within her family. Often additional challenges such as aliya, learning disabilities, illness, or family instability may further compound their struggles. No child has to navigate this path alone. How long does the relationship between a mentor and mentee usually last? Successful mentoring is defined on a continuum and is dependent on many variables. Close, healthy, supportive relationships between mentors and mentees that last for a significant amount of time (i.e. more than one year) are central to success. Regular, consistent contact between a child and a significant adult that is structured and geared toward the child’s interests and personality fosters trust, stability, and increased self-confidence. How is mentoring different than therapy? Some of the differences between mentoring and therapy depend on the nature of the issue for which a child is in need of help. Therapy is for issues and problems that might be more serious or complex and require a trained professional eye to assess and determine the best course of treatment. If a child is suffering from symptoms that are interfering with daily functioning, the therapy option could be explored. Hakshiva’s experienced therapists are available to explore both these options with parents and help guide the process. Who are the mentors? Our mentoring staff are handpicked young adults and women from a broad spectrum of the Ramat Beit Shemesh community who provide perspective to their mentees from their additional years of life experience and act as role models providing dedication, caring, and support. Hakshiva mentors are closely supervised and guided by the program’s management to help foster success. Children and teens can tell when an adult is authentically interested in them as individuals, when their ideas are valued and feelings are honored. Good mentors don’t judge young people or impose their own beliefs on them. Instead they remind them who they are and help them believe that they have the insights to make good choices. Knowing they are not being judged helps young people think through decisions critically, sifting through the deeper values that will shape the adults they become. Our mentors work hard to ensure that each mentee experiences this unique relationship. What’s the goal of the mentoring experience? The mentoring experience should promote strong feelings of self-worth, happiness, and an all-around positive outlook on the part of the mentee. We strive to help each girl develop tools for a successful life in which she can reach her full potential.

Can a Notary Notarize
Outside His State? By Avrum Aaron
A
s a US lawyer who lives outside the US, I am often asked to notarize documents for US citizens. This should be pretty simple. After all, I am a New Jersey notary by virtue of the fact that I am admitted to practice law in New Jersey. Since I can practice law while I am outside New Jersey, I should be able to notarize when I am outside New Jersey. Pretty simple — but not so fast. There are those who say that a notary can only notarize when he or she is physically located in his or her state. This is the position of the American Society of Notaries (www.asnnotary. org/?form=jurisdictionissues). Of course, they have as much authority to make state law as the American Automobile Association has to set state speeding limits. That is, none whatsoever. Only the states can make laws about notaries and some states’ laws — such as New Jersey’s — are not clear on this issue. On the one hand, the New Jersey Notary Public Manual states: “A duly appointed New Jersey Notary Public is authorized to perform notary services throughout the State of New Jersey.” On the other hand, in listing the five prohibitions that a New Jersey notary must be mindful of, notarizing outside the state is markedly absent. Now, some would argue that the lack of a prohibition is obvious, but that’s not the way the law works. It is a principle of law that one cannot be punished unless there is a specific statute that is violated. Therefore, it would seem that a New Jersey notary who notarizes outside New Jersey would have a good case not to be punished. The idea that New Jersey would attempt to prosecute a notary who notarizes out of state is highly unlikely (that’s why lawyers say it won’t happen, but could). The state shows how much they value a notarization by limiting the charge to notarize to $2.50. In the event a document is questioned because the notary was not in New Jersey, the notarization could be considered invalid. All that means is that it would have to be notarized again (assuming that’s possible). Just as an aside, a colleague of mine told me a story of a New Jersey lawyer who notarized outside New Jersey and his counterpart in the transaction (I think it was a real estate deal) threatened to make a complaint to the State Legal Ethics Board (whether that 36
•
SEPTEMBER 2016
threat was carried out or not, I do not know). Now, to lawyers State Legal Ethics Boards are what 25-foot-long sharks and the zombie apocalypse are to normal folks. I’m not too worried for the protagonist of that story, although I wouldn’t want to be him. Similarly, I received a question on my website about an outof-state New Jersey notarization that was challenged, although I never got the exact details about the nature of the challenge. There is an interesting solution to the problem of being outside your state and needing a notary. The State of Virginia allows for remote notarization and there are companies that are set up to notarize online. Whether these Virginia notarizations are acceptable in all the other states is a good question. For example, California law seems to indicate that they are acceptable, while New York has rules that prescribe that the notary and the signatory must meet face-to-face. There is, of course, Article IV, Section 1 of the United States Constitution, known as the “Full Faith and Credit Clause,” which directs all states to respect the “public acts, records, and judicial proceedings of every other state.” So, I don’t know how New York voids a Virginia notarization under the Constitution, although I suspect a clerk might just do that and the case will not make it to the Supreme Court. In sum, there may be something to worry about. Even if you use a Virginia service, your out-of-state notarization may be invalid. Who needs that hassle? I’d be happy to litigate the case up to the Supreme Court. However, saying that idea is less than cost-effective is like saying Syria has a law and order problem. So, just in case, get your document notarized in the right state. If you are overseas, there is always the US Embassy or Consulate. Of course, they charge $50 to notarize each document. But that’s the subject of another article. Avrum Aaron, Esq. has been practicing law in New Jersey since 1994. He has never charged to notarize a document and won’t notarize outside of New Jersey despite/because of what is written above. INSURANCE
Interesting Facts to Know About Insurance in Israel 10 Questions that People Ask Us By Shimon Cohen Motor Insurance I forgot to add on an extra driver to my car policy which has only two listed drivers. The unlisted driver had an accident – am I in trouble? You are! The policies clearly state that only the drivers listed are covered. You must inform your agent/insurance company before any additional drivers use the car. I was reversing out of my driveway – no cars were near, I checked. Another driver appeared out of nowhere, obviously driving quickly, and we collided. Who’s at fault? In general, anyone coming from a side road into the main road has to be especially careful and the courts will usually rule against the reversing car. The same applies to anyone making a U-turn (that driver is usually at fault) or crashing into a stationary vehicle (the car behind should have kept a distance). I was involved in an accident with a Palestinian car. The driver admitted responsibility. What are my options? Not too many! If the damage is small and the other driver is prepared to pay – go for it. However, if there is major damage there is usually no use in suing a Palestinian insurance company. You have to use your own policy – pay the deductible, lose your non-claim bonus and… smile! (What else?) Health/Life Investments Will my U.S. life insurance policy cover me in Israel? Some do and some exclude it. You must check with your U.S. broker. Israeli policies cover war and terror. Can U.S. citizens invest in Israel? This has become increasingly difficult. However, there are still a few options. Contact Yona in our office. By the way, if you are not a U.S. citizen and have nevertheless invested in the U.S. ($60,000 or more), you may be liable to U.S. Estate Taxes. Beware! I’m not an Israeli citizen – can I purchase supplementary health insurance? Yes – on condition that you also have Kupat Cholim. I have the highest level of Kupat Cholim cover – why do I need private supplementary health insurance? Three main reasons: 1) Private health insurance covers rare 38
•
SEPTEMBER 2016
expensive medications that are not included in the sal briut – this could cost thousands of shekels a month. 2) Option for surgery overseas – the kupa will only agree to this when no one in Israel can do similar surgery or when it’s already life and death. 3) Transplants – you have cover of $1,000,000 and access to a much wider donor base. Just do it!! Home Insurance My house is worth 2,000,000 NIS but my mortgage bank insures it for much less – why? In general, Israeli policies are based on the rebuilding value of property; approximately 1,500 NIS per square meter. You can however, “top it up” to the full value by adding coverage for the land value, thereby insuring it for the full value. If I rent out my apartment, is my tenant covered if he/she is hurt due to a fault in the apartment? Yes, the tenant is regarded as a third party (like any other visitor) – this is through a clause that we add on to your policy. My bank urges me to take out mortgage insurance for both life and structure, through their affiliate company. Why shouldn’t I do it? Two main reasons (and one more just for fun): 1) Often the bank does not include third party liability cover. That means that if your burst pipe causes damage to the apartment below – you’re in hot water! 2) If you ever have a claim on your structure who do you call? The bank? The unknown service company? 3) We are usually very competitive with the bank’s prices – try us!

Summer Safety Rules Part 2: Heat Stroke By United Hatzalah
T
he definition of heat stroke is: damaged thermoregulation and elevated body temperature higher than 40 degrees Celsius. That is, the body absorbs and produces more heat than it can dissipate. In this situation, a person is not thirsty; they are hot and now is the time to pour water on them. There is no need to let them drink now. Our body temperature must be kept at a constant level of about 37 degrees (it naturally deviates a bit up and down). When we do physical activity or eat, our bodies produce heat. In addition to the heat that our bodies produce we also absorb heat from the outside environment. In order to avoid the accumulation of too much heat, our bodies regulate temperature by “homeostasis” (maintaining a constant internal temperature even when the external temperature changes). This equilibrium causes heat to be emitted through perspiration, blood vessel expansion (this is why we turn red when we are hot), and acclimatization (the process in which the body adjusts itself to its environment). When the homeostasis mechanism is not able to maintain a normal temperature and it increases significantly above normal, we are liable to fall into a dangerous situation, which is heat stroke. Our bodies are mostly made up of proteins which operate at a constant temperature. When our bodies heat up to a temperature that these proteins are not used to, we are harming their functional ability. The most important proteins that are damaged by heat stroke are those in the brain. Imagine that you put an egg into a frying pan. What will happen to the egg? It’ll turn into an omelet. That is also what happens to the brain in heat stroke and an omelet cannot turn back into an egg…. A person suffering from heat stroke (and it doesn’t matter what age) will be red, hot and damp, will walk in zigzags, will slur her words or not make sense, will feel nauseous and vomit, will have changes in behavior, and could even lose consciousness. Heat stroke is extremely dangerous and there is a chance of death of it is not treated in time! When there is time, how can it be treated? Undress the patient and pour large amounts of water on him (Note! In order to prevent choking, do NOT pour water over his face). Call for medical assistance as quickly as possible so they can cool the patient using their professional methods. How can heat stroke be prevented? If you are on a field trip, make sure to take a fifteen-minute

break after every hour of walking in the shade. Keep an eye on young children who are not used to walking for long periods and need longer rest time. Make sure to drink a lot so that the body can produce sweat to cool itself down. Make sure young children aren’t carrying too much on their backs. If a member of the family had a fever during the week that the trip was to take place, they should not go on the trip (the same goes for a child who had diarrhea or vomiting before or during the trip). And remember Dehydration = drink water Heat stroke = pour water on the patient And not vice versa!!

CONTRACTOR
How to Choose a Kablan By Shiputzei Yerushalayim
A
contractor (kablan) will be responsible for ensuring the highest quality of work in your current (or future) home. He will listen to your requests and concerns, he will always answer his phone and make sure to keep coming back until you are 100% satisfied. The finished product will fill you with joyous satisfaction, only to be outdone by the wide variety of positive memories you have of your contractor from the beginning of the building process until the very end. Sounds great, right? Unfortunately, this is far from the reality for many people dealing with contractors in Israel. For this reason, whether building a new home or simply repairing one, people push it off because not only do they not know who to call, but they also don’t know how to choose from those they do call, especially given prevailing language and culture gaps. The truth is finding the right contractor doesn’t have to be as scary as it may seem, and there are plenty of good ones out there. However to find a good contractor, especially for a project that will take several days or weeks of work, it is imperative to do your homework. Here are some guidelines on how to choose the right contractor: First of all, never hire a contractor without asking for references. Unfortunately, there are many dishonest contractors out there, so it’s always worthwhile to hear about someone else’s experiences with contractors they have used for similar projects. Make sure you ask if the contractor gave a written proposal, and more importantly, did he honor it? A written proposal is very important, as it should stipulate, for example, what materials are going to be used, the price quote (including VAT or not) and a time estimate. In addition, depending on the size of the project, a payment plan should also be specified ahead of time, how much to pay upfront, how much over the course of the project and the balance upon completion. Just remember, the lowest bid is not always the best. Sometimes it is better to hold off on some of the things you wanted to do and to pay a little bit more for better quality. Remember, you get what you pay for! In addition, if the work is of a low standard, you will probably end up paying more in the end to fix his mistakes. Furthermore, be sure to inquire how did the candidate handle any problems that arose? Was he quick to return and fix the problem or did he try and shirk his responsibility? After you have narrowed down the search with your newfound references, you can start contacting potential contractors. Pay attention to the little things from the beginning. For example, did he answer the phone when you called to schedule a meeting? If yes, was he cordial and attentive on the phone? If not, did he quickly return your message? 42
•
SEPTEMBER 2016
After the initial visit, note if he was punctual or late. How soon did he provide you with a written estimate? These are all revealing signs regarding how the contractor operates and how he will behave both during and after the job is completed. Sometimes people are so pressured to begin so that they ignore some of the apparent warning signs that could have saved a lot of time and anguish had they paid attention from the beginning. Another point to ask the contractor is if he will consistently be on site, and if not, find out about the employees and the person left in charge. You need to be comfortable with the employees as they will be in your home a lot over the length of the project, and make sure that they will come with their own supplies and do not need to rely on you for your supplies or tools, or even food and drinks. While unfortunately there is no perfect formula to hiring the right contractor, these guidelines will hopefully give you the best idea of who you are getting yourself involved with to make it as easy and pleasant a process as possible. Good luck!

Moving Tips
Part
Last month, Gimmel Gimmel movers gave us several tips to help prepare us to be smarter about our moving. And this month we have a few more important and helpful ideas for you. Happy and safe moving!
Packing, Disassembly, Assembly: Having the movers pack your things costs money, buts it’s worth every agora when you do it with professional people. A professional is equipped with the necessary packing materials. And if you ask to pack your own things, they will supply you with packing materials as required, unlimited amounts of boxes, or at least a sufficient minimum quantity, and additional auxiliary materials — usually at lower-than-market cost. He will also be equipped like a carpenter so he can disassemble and assemble closets and other furniture. When an unskilled worker disassembles and assembles a closet, there’s a very large chance that the closet will not be the same as it was. What should you do? Check in advance what the packing cost is, what packing supplies the mover has and what their cost is. If you are packing on your own, ask how many boxes he can supply. Never agree to a price per box for packing. If the mover insists on a per box rate, usually 20-30 shekels per box, then agree to a specific sum as the highest limit, let’s say 1,000 shekels. And know who is doing the assembly and disassembly. How much does it cost to move? Basic Moving Cost: 1,300-2,000 shekels Add-ons:
Insurance Some movers try to save money and don’t insure the contents of the truck. If an accident happens and your property is damaged, the moving company won’t be compensated by the insurance company. If a large amount of property is damaged, many movers won’t be able to bear the cost and, even if you sue them, you won’t have anyone to collect from. Not to mention the grief and extra time you’ll have to spend on the claim against them. Many companies do talk about general insurance coverage, but don’t stipulate specific amounts. The insurance element becomes critical when the movers pack the contents of your home. The chances of something breaking or being damaged then grow significantly. What should you do? When signing an agreement with the movers, you should make sure the insured amount is listed (don’t get confused: this is to insure the contents, not the truck). Ask to see the insurance policy. And confirm that the amount covers the value of your home’s contents. Watch out for clauses about deductibles. These usually are for hundreds of dollars, but the amount of property damaged during a move is usually relatively small. This kind of clause lowers the movers’ motivation to be cautious. Not Staying on Schedule If you scheduled the move for early morning, it might mean you have to get up at dawn, but it raises your chances of the move starting on time. Scheduling a move for the afternoon is problematic. Moonlighters Movers who deal all year long with moving food and other items, and become home movers over the summer in order to enjoy the seasonal prosperity…. Not every truck owner is a home mover. This area requires professionalism. A professional mover can move the contents of a three-room apartment in the city within three-four hours. A moonlighter will need much more time and the chances he will damage your property are greater. What should you do? Make sure the mover deals with home moves on a permanent basis. If you suspect otherwise, ask for names of customers who moved homes with this mover during the winter. 44

Under the Management of Avner and Benny Michaeli
What Are All Those Car Parts?
M
ost drivers learn this incredibly powerful skill while still in their teens. It’s fairly easy to drive a car, so many drivers simply gloss over all of the parts that actually make the car go and bring it to a professional whenever there’s a problem. But knowledge is power, so here’s a small dictionary, in case you find yourself at the garage and want to feel a bit more knowledgeable. These are the most basic and important pieces of information to know about how your car operates: Engine ( )מנוע: The very heart of your vehicle, this makes the car go. The engine takes over where the horses left off, hence the power being measured in amounts of horses (aka, horsepower.) The quality of the engine indicates the overall quality of the car, as it’s the main part of the vehicle. The kind of engine used in a car is an internal combustion engine. You don’t need to know exactly what that means, but there are different types of engines for different purposes. Chassis ( )שאסי: This is like the skeleton of the car, the frame from which everything else hangs. It’s made of sturdy steel to keep everything together, and the shape of the chassis determines the size and structure of the vehicle – whether it’s a sedan, hatchback, and so on. Transmission System ( )תיבת הילוכים: The transmission system is what brings it all together. It’s how the different parts of the car “communicate” with each other. The terms you’re probably more familiar with are “manual” versus “automatic”. A car with a
manual transmission works with a gearshift and a foot clutch, and you need to manually change the gears. An automatic transmission system changes gears without your input and, for obvious reasons, these are the more popular varieties. Auxiliaries ()חלקי עזר: These are the “extras” in the car, the things that don’t make the car go, but make it comfortable and luxurious, or aid in driving. These are things such as the lights, dashboard panels, alternator, spark plugs, and other parts that you may or may not already know about. These are often what jack up the price of an otherwise standard system. When you use a car often, a comfortable, easy to use and convenient car is your best friend. Controls: These are how the driver controls the car, specifically the steering system, which includes the steering wheel and its connections to the other parts or the car, and the braking system, more commonly known as the brakes. These crucial components bring the engine together with the wheels, making your car go. Superstructure(על- )מבנה: This is a fancy term for the body of the car – outer body, windows, etc. These parts do not aid in the function of the vehicle, but are more than luxuries; without them, your car would be an engine on wheels, not too pleasant an atmosphere for driving, and especially cold in the winter and wet in the rain. Now, perhaps you’ll feel more empowered next time you take a trip to your garage, and you’ll feel more confident driving your car.

KEEPING YOUR KITCHEN SAFE
You’ve planned your new kitchen, sketched the cupboards to the last centimeter, and chosen the best materials, matching hardware, and the perfect color scheme. A moment before you send off the plans and order the work, stop and think: Is the kitchen that you’ve planned safe? The kitchen is, by nature, the center of the home. It’s a place where kids love to spend time, watching
AT KITCHENS WE CONSIDER YOUR NEEDS AND PREFERENCES, AND WILL PROFESSIONALLY DESIGN A KITCHEN TO YOUR SATISFACTION. the goings-on and, of course, looking for yummy snacks… It’s important that the kitchen is safe for them. Little fingers caught in heavy drawers,
a head bumping into the sharp corner of a table, burns caused by accidental spills from boiling pots – such scenarios are every parent’s nightmare. By following some simple rules, you can make your kitchen a safe space: Ensure that sharp corners (edges of tables, marble work surfaces, etc.) are not located in central areas where you or your children will be walking and moving, but rather are out of the way. Place your breakfast nook off to one side. Consider the handles you want to install. No matter how beautiful their design, you won’t be happy with them if hands are constantly being scratched or pierced by them. Choose handles that don’t have sharp edges. Ensure that there is a distance of at least 60 cm between the sink and the stove, and between the stove and top cupboards. The stove and oven should not be easily accessible to small children. Place electrical appliances such as an oven or microwave no higher than eye level so that hot foods can be safely and conveniently removed from them. Avoid placing the stove under a window: wind blowing in will fan a flame. (Besides, your window will end up constantly being sprayed with oily droplets….) Install soft closing mechanisms in the drawers (or, alternatively, install locks that prevent small children from opening them). A safe kitchen is a kitchen that the whole family can enjoy, without worries. Good luck!
