We publish STUFF because more than 80% of the expected annual job openings in Wisconsin through 2030 require less than a four-year degree. You can find plenty of information online about navigating the application process for a four-year college but finding information about picking the right technical school program is trickier, which is why we asked experts at southeastern Wisconsin tech schools for their advice. You can read what they had to say on page 29.

Finally, we are especially grateful to our longtime partner, GPS Education Partners, who has supported this initiative from the very beginning in 2017.

Many companies employ people to coordinate shipping and receiving products and materials. These people don’t work directly on products but are critical to keeping a business moving.

BREAKING DOWN THE SUPPLY CHAIN

The products we use every day start as raw materials like metal, plastic resins, food commodities or fabrics.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been shortages of one product after another. From toilet paper to new trucks, these shortages were often caused by supply chain issues. Dozens of companies often contribute to making products available for us to buy at a store or order online. Issues at any one of them, or the transportation between them, can disrupt product availability. These issues create plenty of job opportunities. Companies employ people in supply chain management jobs to make sure they have the right materials available at the right time to make the products that consumers want. They also need employees to figure out the best and most efficient way to ship those products to stores and consumers.

The need for people working in supply chain management is growing as companies look to save money moving products as efficiently as possible. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates supply chain jobs in Wisconsin will grow 32% by 2030, with median salaries around $62,870. Four-year and two-year schools including Marquette University and Waukesha County Technical College have programs in supply chain management.

All of the parts and components made by factories eventually come together for final assembly and distribution.

Once products are finished, they are shipped to retailers or warehouses for distribution.

When consumers finally buy products, it is the end of a complex process that benefits from companies knowing what to make and how to ship it.

STUFF SE | Fall 202210 A SUPPLEMENT OF BIZTIMES MILWAUKEE SUPPLY CHAIN

Most manufacturers don’t actually make the final product we see. Instead, many companies specialize in making components or parts that go into a final product.

RENOVATING THE MILWAUKEE ATHLETIC CLUB

It took three years and $62 million, but the Milwaukee Athletic Club in downtown Milwaukee has a completely new look after undergoing a massive renovation project. The club’s 100-plus year-old building at 758 N. Broadway had become highly inefficient over the years and the mechanical systems serving its 13 stories were out of date. However, the project was about more than updating the heating and air conditioning. Initially, the plan was to turn the building’s middle five floors into a 95-room hotel, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced a change of plans and eight of the floors were turned into 54 apartments. Elsewhere in the building, there are ballrooms with breathtaking chandeliers, restored murals from 1948, top-notch athletic and fitness facilities, and a rooftop bar and terrace.

Here are just some of the Wisconsin companies that worked on the project: Graef USA | Architect/Engineering | Milwaukee Kahler Slater | Architect | Milwaukee ECS Midwest | Consultant | Brookfield CG Schmidt | General Contractor | Milwaukee Arbon Equipment Corp. | Industrial Doors and Docks | Milwaukee Badger Swimpools | Swimming Pools | Prairie du Sac Baseman Bros. | Gym and Sport Floors | Ixonia Berglund Construction | Exterior Façade/Building Envelope Restoration | BlairMilwaukeeFireProtection | Fire Protection Systems | Butler Butters Fetting Co. | HVAC, Plumbing, Electric, Fire Protection | Milwaukee Common Links Construction | Commercial Construction | Brookfield Core Tech | Security and Surveillance | Milwaukee Construction Supply & Erection | Structural and Architectural Metals | DrexelGermantownBuilding Supply | Building Materials | Brookfield Geis Building Products | Garage Doors | Brookfield Hetzel Tile & Marble | Tile and Marble | Menomonee Falls Horner Plumbing Co. | Plumbing | Pewaukee Integrity Environmental Services | Abatement | Waukesha Klein-Dickert Milwaukee | Glass | Pewaukee L & A Crystal | Polished Concrete | Mequon Langer Roofing & Sheet Metal | Roofing | Milwaukee Munson Inc. | Fencing and Paving | Glendale Next Electric | Electrician | Waukesha Performance Contracting Inc. | Acoustical Ceilings, Specialty Walls and Ceilings | Sun RegencyPrairieJanitorial Service | Professional Cleaning Services | New Berlin Schindler Elevator Corp. | Elevators | Menomonee Falls Veit & Company Inc. | Specialty Contracting and Waste Management | New Berlin 13stuff.biztimes.com | STUFF SE BeforeBeforeAfterAfter After

CONTRACTORS a deadline related to the project’s financing, crews from Milwaukee-based construction firm C.G. Schmidt had to work double and weekend shifts to get the job done. The firm does a lot of work on school projects where work is done over the summer, so it was used to working on tight timelines. Still, to get a 16-month project done in 12 months required four full-time construction managers instead of the normal two. Around 350 construction workers contributed to the project, including 70 from C.G. Schmidt and another 200 to 300 tradesmen and women.

How do I save money?

What changes my budget?

The amount of money you spend each month on some things, like rent, may not change very much. Other costs may go up and down depending on your activities. For example, utilities charge you based on how much natural gas or electricity you use, so if you have to heat or cool your house a lot, your costs may go up if those items are not included in your rent. The amount you spend on food may also change if you eat at restaurants a lot since they are generally more expensive than cooking at home.

If you want to save money for bigger purchases like a house, a new car or a nice vacation you will need to spend less than you make each month. There are lots of ways to save money on regular costs, including splitting housing with roommates, buying generic products instead of name brands, buying in bulk, not using credit cards or at least making sure you pay off your balance every month to avoid interest charges.

How much do I need to make to live like I want?

At its heart, a budget is about how much you make and how much you spend. Every month, there are certain costs you can plan for like rent, utilities, groceries and food, and transportation costs like gas for your car. There are also unexpected costs like medical bills if you get hurt or car repairs if you’re in an accident. You should plan some extra cushion in your budget to account for these, to save for bigger purchases in the future or to pay for things you want to do like going to a Brewers game or seeing your favorite artist live in concert. It may seem like it is a long way off, but you should also plan to set some money aside for your retirement.

WHERE YOU LIVE MATTERS: cost of many common items in your budget will be different depending on where you live. The Economic Policy Institute estimates housing for one person in metro Milwaukee is around $663 per month, while it is around $1,000 in Chicago and $2,350 in San Francisco. Here’s a look at how some common costs compare across metro areas.

BEFORE THE INTERVIEW:

• IDENTIFY NEXT STEPS: Ask the interviewer what the next steps in the process will be so you know what to expect. There may be additional rounds of interviews, skill tests, background checks, reference checks or maybe just waiting for other candidates to have their interview.

• FOLLOW-UP: You could send a handwritten note, an email or make a phone call, but you should ab solutely follow up with the person you interviewed with to thank them for their time. If you can, mention specific things from your interview. Try to reach out within 24 hours of completing the interview. If you haven’t heard any update after a week and a half to two weeks, it is acceptable to ask about where the company is in the hiring process.

NAILING THE JOB INTERVIEW

But here’s the thing: A job interview does not have to be scary. A little research, some practice and following a few key tips will go a long way. After all, a job inter view is about helping the person hiring get to know you, and no one knows your story better than you do.

• DO SOME RESEARCH: You’ve applied to the com pany and landed an interview, but before you walk in the door you will want to get a better understand ing of the company, its history, and the products or services it sells. If you know who you will be inter viewing with, try to learn a little about them. How long have they been with the company? Where did they go to school? Do you have shared interests?

• MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHERE YOU’RE GOING: Especially if you’re interviewing at a big company, it can be tricky to find your way around an unfamiliar building. You might be given instructions on where to go, but if not, it’s a good idea to ask for clarifica tion. At the very least, look up the location online and plan your route in advance.

• DRESS THE PART: Depending on the job you’re ap plying for, it may not be necessary to dress in formal business attire, but you should certainly dress better than you would on a typical day of school.

THERE IS NO PART of the job search process more nerve wracking than the actual interview. Looking for an open position, it can be fun to imagine what it would be like to work at different companies. Filling out an ap plication or writing a cover letter, maybe a little tedious, but you’re in control and get to decide when you’re done. The job interview, on the other hand, requires you to walk into a room, sit down with someone you likely just met and tell them all about yourself in hopes they will give you an opportunity. Talk about pressure.

Here are a few things to keep in mind to make the pro cess a little easier:

• PLAN QUESTIONS OF YOUR OWN: Yes, an inter view is about you answering questions, but it is also your chance to learn more about the company. What things matter to you in a job? Are you going to need some schedule flexibility to accommodate school? What is it like to work for the company? What kind of work environment can you expect? What does the interviewer like or not like about the company? What opportunities are there to advance? These are all questions you can ask to help you understand if you want to join a business.

• SHOW UP EARLY: You never know what might happen on the way to your interview, you could get a flat tire or get stuck in traffic, which is why you should plan to arrive to your interview early. It will give you a chance to collect yourself and focus

before sitting down for the interview. There’s also a chance your interviewer will be ready for you early, potentially giving you more time to tell your story and learn about the company.

AFTER THE INTERVIEW:

A SUPPLEMENT OF BIZTIMES MILWAUKEESTUFF SE | Fall 202240 NAILING THE INTERVIEW

• BE YOURSELF: There are plenty of cliché interview questions. Where do you want to be in five years? What’s your greatest weakness? You should prepare to answer these questions and others, but it is more important that your answers are authentic than it is for you to give answers you think the interviewer wants to hear.

• ASK QUESTIONS: Wanting to know more about the company not only shows you’re interested in the job, but it will also help you learn if it is a place you want to work. Better to find out it’s not a good fit in the interview process than realizing it after a few weeks on the job.

• ACCEPT THE JOB: If all goes well, your interview process will end with a job offer. If you’ve done your research, you’ll know what the job should pay in your region. Depending on the offer, it is OK to negotiate for better pay and benefits, especially if you know what the position pays elsewhere and what your ex perience is worth. Hopefully, the process ends with you starting a new job. n

I originally was part of the cleaning crew and was promoted to Facilities Coordinator. As our facility grew I was given more responsibility and was promoted to a Sr. Facilities Technician. I now help coordinate onsite customer/vendor tours to ensure our facility runs smoothly.

I manage daily maintenance requests, along with assigning/ working on purchase orders and work orders. I also handle our security system and oversee the inventory management of our tool locker checkout program.

I’ve always liked creating and working with my hands. After I graduated high school, I began my career in forging through different companies but I knew I wanted to end up here. I love the brand and heard great things about the culture.

My day-to-day, along with our Safety Specialist, consists of safety engagement with employees at our two manufacturing plants. Ensuring that OSHA and regulatory compliance is in order through inspections, audits, and training. Working as the point of contact for safety and environmental concerns during company updates and improvements. Teaming up with other departments to implement improvements to our manufacturing process to enhance safety and ergonomics in the workplace.

The people! Our employees are amazing - their engagement and commitment towards safety and each other in the workplace is astounding! So often our employees will come to me with great ideas or suggestions on how to continue to improve upon safety and health in the workplace. Great employees and a great culture are what make the difference for me.

The two people who got me “into the doors” of Rytec actually still work here today. One is our Operations Manager (34 years with Rytec) and the other is our Order Fulfillment Specialist IV (16 years with Rytec). At the time they recruited me I was going to school pursuing fire science and was also working part-time as a firefighter. Rytec offered me the full-time opportunity I was looking for. I started out working as a Mechanical Assembler for our Spiral Door product line back in 1999. Soon after I got hired on I was given the opportunity to quickly progress and cross-train in several other areas within the shop. Around 2013 I was offered the opportunity to move into safety and ever since then, it has been my full-time career path at Rytec. They have continued to invest in me, my career and my journey.

This includes scheduling inbound and outbound ocean containers, arranging offsite pick-ups and return shipments, managing outbound shipments to customers (full and partial truck load) and working with LTL freight carriers. In addition, I handle inventory reconciliation and troubleshooting errors in our processing system.
