CALLING FLORIANA HOME

ANDREW VINCI’S ARCHITECTURAL FIRM IS BASED IN FLORIANA, AND HE HAS MADE THE UNDULY OVERLOOKED TOWN HIS SECOND HOME AS HE PLAYS TOURIST ON HIS LONG, MEANDERING WALKS WITH HIS DOG VICTOR. THIS IS BORGO VILHENA, ON THE CAPITAL CITY’S DOORSTEP, AS SEEN THROUGH THE ARCHITECT’S DISCERNING EYES.

I moved my practice to Floriana from Sliema, where I still live, five years ago, when in pre-COVID days it made more sense as a base, reached easily by clients and close to the bureaucratic authorities that we deal with daily.

I had fond memories of the town from my visits as a child at my aunt’s in Market Street, a large apartment with wonky patterned tiles at the end of an endless staircase through which a wicker basket, or qoffa , was lowered to take up the shopping; something you would still see done from the balconies here on the streets.

Other than that, Floriana was all to discover, having since mostly skipped it by on my way in and out of Valletta.

At first, I did not venture out of our new office much, popping in and out for meetings. But things changed when I later adopted our office dog, a whippet named Victor, and had to duly go round the

block for potty breaks. This soon escalated to treading all possible permutations of routes through the town’s gridded streets, eventually staying on for long walks after work till the homebound traffic cleared, to the point of working and living here just to hit the sack in Sliema.

Though parts were rebuilt post-war, I regard Floriana as relatively untouched with its streets still lined by traditional, modest and palatial buildings alike, peppered with small shops and bars run by locals. Not yet overrun by supermarkets, one will find their butcher, baker, tailor, sweet shop, art gallery and even a skilled gilder in St Thomas Street worth a visit.

At the same time, the town is home to embassies and several large corporate and government offices, the Malta Police Headquarters occupying a former hospital, the Central Public Library and the imposing Archbishop’s Curia.

Floriana is split down the middle by the busy St Anne Street, flanked by Bologna-esque arcades and distinct terrazzo floors housing regrettably dwindling, though still charming, businesses that will hopefully reflourish once plans to pedestrianise this grand thoroughfare materialise.

My haunt in this stretch is the Vilhena Band Club, or każin, the only one in the parish dedicated to St Publius. It’s a great place for observing characters from all social strata and backgrounds – best done sipping cocktails on Friday’s jazz nights, led by the immortal saxophonist Sammy Murgo and his band.

On one side, you’ll find anything from the greasy spoon institution of Lollie Snack Bar for your daily ħobża bil-bajd, laħam u bacon, which I will not translate, to the gentrified Waterfront cruise terminal, if that’s more your thing, and spectacular views over the Grand Harbour from the bastions.

On the other, the magnificent parish church faces the expansive Granaries, il-Fosos, used for large summer concerts; and what is arguably the most beautiful hotel in Malta, The Phoenicia, perfect for a day at its iconic Bastion Pool even if not a guest.

What ties Floriana together, however, are the extensive gardens that are a delight to walk through, or simp ly take a pause in, day or night.

The once walled long garden, chock-a-block with monuments, known as Il-Mall, from Maglio, a croquet-like game played by the Knights there, borders the neighbourhood of Balzunetta. This is actually the true home of St Patrick’s Day celebrations in Malta on account of the Irish regiments of the British Army once stationed there, and well worth checking out come next 17th March. Floriana’s official football club colours, white and green, were handed over by the Irish soldiers after a historic match before their departure.

Further on, you’ll find the luscious Argotti Gardens, housing a botanic centre run by the University of Malta; and the recently restored St Philip’s Garden below, with the majestic Wignacourt Fountain lying at its centre.

The belt formed by the Vilhena, Sir Luigi Preziosi, King George V and Herbert Ganado Gardens atop the bastions is also a staple on my walks with Victor.

I cannot fail to mention the MSPCA where, prior to being a dog owner, I used to pop by after meetings at the Planning Authority smack opposite just to see their pooches and long for one of my own.

I could, at this point, seriously think of moving here altogether, though what if that would take away from the charm of slowly discovering the place as a daily tourist?

DISCOVERING THE VILLAGE OF XEWKIJA

DOMINATING THE SKYLINE ON THE SOUTHEASTERN SIDE OF THE ISLAND OF GOZO IS THE UNMISTAKABLE XEWKIJA ROTUNDA CHURCH. BUT BEYOND THE DOME, FOR WHICH THE VILLAGE IS WIDELY KNOWN, THERE IS SO MUCH TO EXPLORE. HERE'S A LIST OF THINGS TO SEE AND PLACES TO GO IN XEWKIJA - ONE OF THE OLDEST VILLAGES ON GOZO.

THE VILLAGE SQUARE AND THE ROTUNDA

Undoubtedly, the top place to visit in Xewkija is the main square. Upon arriving there, you will experience the feel of the typical G ozitan village square, complete with community village clubs, smaller stores, restaurants and caf é s. Step inside the massively grandiose rotunda and admire the sheer space of the temple dedicated to St John the Baptist. Initiated in 1951, the church, built in local honey-coloured globigerina limestone, is an architectural masterpiece, with beautiful sculptures and a Carrara marble floor.

The more recent scenic paintings from the life of St John are by the Gozitan artist Paul Camilleri Cauchi. The church is adorned with stained glass windows that burst with amazingly bright and diaphanous colours as the sun’s rays pour through them. Arch your neck upwards to follow the highest tip of the dome, considered the third largest freestanding one in the world. On one side of the church, in the sacristy, is the older church,

which was dismantled stone by stone when the newer one was built around it. The older church, which had served the parish since 1665, has been rebuilt as a museum to preserve the rich sculpture. If you’re visiting the village in June, it is worth noting that the people of Xewkija go to gre at lengths to celebrate the ir patron saint , and their village feast is associated with joyful revelry and street décor, including a gigantic street umbrella under which the youngsters dance to the band marches to avoid getting scorched in the sun.

THE XEWKIJA WINDMILL

Heralding all visitors at the crossroads, the Xewkija windmill is a landmark to all who visit the island of Gozo and not just Xewkija. The recently restored Xewkija windmill is open to visitors and is one of the landmarks, topping the li st of what to see in Xewkija. Uniquely shaped as an octagonal structure, the windmill also features an oven that served for baking bread in times gone by.

WORDS VISITGOZO / MINISTRY FOR GOZO

B AKER IES AND VINTAGE GROCERY S TORE

Being one of the older villages on the island, Xewkija still pr eserves some older bakeries. While some are more popular than others and are sought by visitors who tour the village, others are still tucked away in its backstreets. One particular old-style grocery store, still sporting its well-preserved vintage sign, continues to serve the community’s needs in one of the older streets. Xewkija is also known for the stone décor visible in the houses. The stone sculptures adorning the rotunda are the

work of one of the local families. You may be lucky enough to stumble upon one of the sculpture master s at work in a workshop a stone’s throw away from the windmill.

COUNTRY LIFE

Away from the village core, Xewkija is a village that knows its roots in country life. Typical farmhouses and horse stables are scattered in the village’s periphery. From here, it is easy to follow paths that lead to rural scenes and coastal views. On the edge of the village of Xewkija, you will also find the medieval Chapel of Santa Cecilia,

considered to be the oldest chapel in Gozo. Don’t miss out on this as it is yet another landmark in Xewkija.

MĠARR IX-XINI BAY AND TOWER

One particular road leads to the valley and the quaint bay of Mġarr ix-Xini, guarded by a coastal tower. You can hike down or be prepared to drive along a narrow and steep country road to reach it. The bay and the surrounding waters are also a favourite diving spot. Mġarr ix-Xini Bay became famous when Angelina Jolie filmed the movie By the Sea at this inlet.

MY MILAN

AS AIR MALTA PREPARES TO LAUNCH FLIGHTS TO MALPENSA NEXT MONTH, OPENING AN EASY GATEWAY BEYOND ITALY’S MOST COSMOPOLITAN CITY TO DESTINATIONS LIKE NEW YORK, ITS CAPITAL OF FASHION, ART AND FINANCE IS RE-DISCOVERED, HIGHLIGHTING THAT MILAN'S BEAUTY IS NOT JUST IN VIA MONTENAPOLEONE’S IMPECCABLE SHOP WINDOWS.

I was barely 16 years old when my parents shipped me off on my first solo trip abroad: passport in hand and my first credit card burning a hole through my low-cut jeans, I boarded the Air Malta flight to Malpensa full of youthful enthusiasm.

That first taste of relative freedom, away from the watchful gazes of my parents and assorted distant cousins, forever tied me to the wonder that is Milan, at once elegant yet tough, closed off to the careless visitor yet strangely welcoming.

Because the Lombard capital, as I always say, is a locked-up safe box and all you need is the right key to experience the wealth of its wonders and its people. Contrary to popular belief, Italy’s most cosmopolitan city offers beauty in spades, and not just in Via Montenapoleone’s impeccable shop windows.

Start your day with coffee and brioches at Giacomo Caff è in Palazzo Reale before the de rigueur visit to the pink-grey Duomo di Milano. Pass through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele and browse for beautiful art books at the venerable Libreria Bocca before stocking up on stationery at nearby Mondadori and making your way to Palazzo Durini Caproni di Taliedo, one of architect Gio Ponti’s undisputed masterpieces.

In the city’s artists’ quarter of Brera, standing behind a particularly flattering nude bronze of Napoleon, the recently refurbished Pinacoteca di Brera houses the most marvellous collection of art, dating from the 13th century right until the very recent past. Admire Andrea Mantegna’s Lamentation of Christ and Francesco Hayez’s The Kis s alongside familiar favourites by Preti and Caravaggio.

Tucked away behind swathes of wisteria is Villa Necchi Campiglio, a gem of 1930’s domestic Art Deco architecture and interior design by the legendary Piero Portaluppi. Walk through its stunning halls and up its yellow-carpeted staircase to marvel at the marble bathrooms before popping round to LùBar in Via Palestro for a spot of Sicilian lunch or a calm dinner courtesy of the gorgeous Bonaccorsi siblings.

Reserve tickets to see Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper at the Domini cans’ Santa Maria delle Grazie and get your fill of

contemporary art at Fondazione Prada; its Bar Luce, designed by Wes A nderson also happe ns to be extremely Instagrammable.

Equally beautiful, if a little d ramatic, is the Cimitero Monumentale di Milano, dotted with veritable works of art in the guise of tombs and funerary monuments.

Milan is also home to two legendary theatres, which couldn’t be more different from one another if they tried: the Teatro alla Scala, Italy’s beacon of opera and Maria Callas’s second home, has a marvellous classical programme for symphony, opera and ballet aficionados, while the Piccolo Teatro di Milano puts on an avant-garde offering of contemporary theatre and dance in the tradition of its founder Giorgio Strehler.

Follow your theatre-going with a spritz in a plastic cup at the little kiosk by the Colonne di San Lorenzo and immerse yourself in Milan’s nightlife at the Navigli, or at Plastic if you’re in the mood to party with the city’s young and beautiful.

If you enjoy driving while abroad, rent a car and use Milan as your home-base to explore the gorgeous Lake Garda and Lake Como. Immersed in quasi-Mediterranean microclimates, these northern lakes are some of the most picturesque in Italy. Lake Garda in particular houses Il Vittoriale degli Italiani, once home to Gabriele d’Annunzio and a wonderful expression of eclectic decorative arts, while beautiful Lake Como might regale you with an Amal Clooney sighting if you’re particularly lucky. Visit the beautiful Villa Carlotta and its gardens and try the olive oil produced around the lake; it’s delicate, light and delicious on a grilled steak with a squeeze of lemon.

Milan is also extremely well connected when it comes to trains, with regular high-speed services to Turin, Genoa and Bergamo providing plenty of opportunity to change scene if you’re feeling adventurous or overstimulated by Milan’s at times frenetic pace.

Capital of fashion, art and finance, Milan and her people are often misunderstood. Yet under the reserved, austere façades are a sophisticated, vibrant city and its inhabitants, ready to be known and loved much like I first did 20 years ago. And fall in love I still do, because beneath the shadow of its grey spires and skyscrapers, Milan l'è semper un gran Milan

WORDS FARSONS

A REFRESHING EXPERIENCE

THE NEWLY OPENED FARSONS BREWERY EXPERIENCE OFFERS VISITORS AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN ABOUT THE RICH HISTORY OF BREWING IN MALTA AND THE PIVOTAL ROLE FARSONS HAD IN SHAPING THE ISLAND’S BEVERAGE INDUSTRY AND CONTRIBUTING TO ITS SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC LANDSCAPE.

Malta’s own first brew was the Farsons Pale Ale, produced in the newly built brewery of L Farrugia & Sons Ltd. Its launch in Qormi at the feast of St George was an immediate success.

The quality and price managed to displace Simonds’ local market dominance in a few months, forcing the British Goliath to seek merger with the Maltese David. The companies agreed to unite and by mid-1929, Simonds Farsons Ltd was brewing Hopleaf and other popular ales and stouts, favourites of the British armed forces and gaining popularity with the locals at the same time. This was one of the significant milestones in Malta’s brewing history.

Simonds Farsons Ltd began its operations in a challenging environment, but the company's commitment to quality and innovation laid the foundation for its future success. Joined by the Scicluna family in 1948 to form Simonds Farsons Cisk Ltd, the company produces iconic beverage brands that have become integral to Maltese culture.

Cisk Lager is the country's most popular and widely consumed beer, and together with Kinnie, aromatic herbs, have become part of the Malta’s very own soft drink made from bitter oranges and Maltese identity that are enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. The Farsons Brewery Experience showcases historical artifacts

related to brewing, such as old equipment, bottles, labels and advertisements. These give visitors a tangible sense of the company's evolution and its impact on the Maltese culture. Visitors can learn about the brewing process, ingredients used, and the science behind creating different types of beer, including lagers, ales and specialty brews.

The Experience treats its visitors to a pint of Cisk from The Cisk Tap, the very first Cisk-themed bar on the island, offering the freshest beer, as well as panoramic views. One can also opt for a beertasting tray to sample the variety produced. This adds a sensory element to the Experience, giving visitors a chance to appreciate the flavours and craftsmanship of its products.

Enjoy br owsing through the Farsons Brandstore, where mementos, merchandise and even products made by Farsons can be p urchased.

The Farsons Brewery Experience offers a combination of history, education and entertainment, making it an appealing destination for all beer enthusiasts and those intere sted in Malta’s industrial heritage.

SAILING INTO THEIR FUTURE

THE JARHEAD YOUNG SAILORS MALTA FOUNDATION HAS MADE THE ELITE SPORT OF SAILING ACCESSIBLE TO THE ISLAND’S TEENS. AS THE TEAM PREPARES TO COMPETE IN THE ROLEX MIDDLESEA RACE THIS MONTH, JYS'S FOUNDER, GREGORY NASMYTH, TALKS ABOUT GIVING YOUTHS THE OPPORTUNITY TO TRAIN IN COMPETITIVE SAILING AND FULFIL A CHALLENGING DREAM.

October means Rolex Middlesea Race season, and you can almost taste the excitement along with the sea spray on the island. But the biggest wave of anticipation probably comes from the Jarhead Young Sailors Malta Foundation (JYS), notable in that the crews are completely composed of young teens under the supervision of an adult skipper.

For these youngsters, sailing the Rolex Middlesea Race is a dream they couldn’t have envisaged had they not been taken under the wings of the non-profit foundation, which was launched by Gregory Nasmyth and his wife Samantha Rowe-Beddoe with the aim of offering young ones, who previously had no access to the sport, the opportunity to train in competitive sailing.

“It all started when I bought the Jarhead, a J-109 racing sailing boat. I came quite late to the racing world, but I managed to gather together a crew of misfits for a 600-miler in the UK, later sailing down to Malta from Saint-Tropez to do the Middle Sea Race.

“ We drifte d around Sicily before getting hit by a northwesterly wind and breaking the mast. The boat was stu ck in the UK for about two years, until Brexit hit and we decided to migrat e to Malta,” Greg recounts.

For a while, he toyed with the idea of selling Jarhead, until Samantha came up with an alternative plan – using it to train young would-be sailors, who didn’t have the funds to access a racing boat. Thus, the JYS Foundation was born. The project was an immediate hit, with youngsters from various schools responding with enthusiasm.

Since then, JYS has added a second boat, the Jan, and the crews have taken part in five Rolex Middle Sea Races. Greg recounts how the look on the faces of those who manage to complete the circuit is priceless.

“It’s a very punishing race, but the sense of achievement once you do is incredible. I can’t think of anything else that is so rewarding on a personal level, and this is exactly what I wanted to help these kids experience. When we first arrived in Malta, we realised that sailing was very much an elite sport. So you had all these young ones living on an island, surrounded by water, who had never been sailing. It was bizarre,” Greg confides.

He is of the view that forcing yourself to get up and do stuff that scares you, even if it looks terrifying, is an important life lesson. But how do the parents of the young sailors view all this?

“We do sit them down and warn them that, yes, competitive sailing carries an inherent element of danger. Then again, the crew isn’t simply dropped into a competitive race. From sailing on a dinghy to being part of a racer’s crew, there’s a whole ocean of difference. Those who want to aim for the Rolex Middlesea Race will have done a lot of intensive training with us to ensure they are equipped with the knowledge and the expertise, not to mention all the survival courses,” he explains.

The project is run by an experienced administrator, Wilfred Buttigieg, and during the race, there are adult skippers on board who are constantly in touch via satellite and who decide to pull back should things get too hairy.

29 SPORTS WORDS RAMONA DEPARES

Greg’s proudest moment came in 2020, when Jarhead sailed, and finished, the Rolex Middlesea Race. He describes the feeling of jublilation as the race was held in particularly rough weather, and yet, Jarhead not only ploughed on but also proceeded to win the race’s first prize in ORC Class 6.

“She came back in at 3am. Understandably, the parents were quite worried but the sheer joy on everyone’s face when they finished the race... All the families were there, waiting on Ta’ Xbiex seafront to greet the crew. Seeing the kids running down the pontoon... the emotion was indescribable. I suspect the Ta’ Xbiex neighbours may not have been very pleased with us on that particular occasion,” he says with a rueful chuckle.

“It was one of my proudest moments. Jarhead is quite small, so when it’s rough it gets the brunt of the waves in a way the other bigger boats escape. But you know what: everyone wants to do it again the year after. You forget how bad it was.”

And there are more ambitious plans afoot as, in 2020, JYS was also responsible for putting together the first female team under Nikki Henderson, best known for being the youngest person to skipper a round-the-world yacht race.

Now, Greg wants to extend the opportunity to migrants. He tells me how many of them have been traumatised by their experience at sea, and that being part of JYS may help heal this pain.

Meanwhile, as preparations for the upcoming Rolex Middlesea Race are in full swing, the JYS crew is ready to face the challenges head-on. Greg, who has worked alongside the world-record-breaking swimmer Neil Agius, plans to have the celebrated Olympian give a talk to the young crew.

“I’m sure they will find it very motivational and, of course, it will be great to have him tackle the environmental angle, too. It’s important. After all, this is where the love of sailing stems from. It’s all about the love of the ocean,” Greg concludes.

RACING INTO HISTORY

THE 13TH EDITION OF THE MALTA CLASSIC, A MOTORING FESTIVAL THAT HAS TAKEN ITS PLACE ON THE EUROPEAN VINTAGE AUTOMOBILE EVENT CALENDAR, IS BEING HELD THIS MONTH. IN THE RUN-UP, HERE’S A LOOK INTO THE MALTESE ISLANDS’ CULT OF THE FOUR-WHEELED DREAM MACHINE.

You won’t have been in Malta long before you realise that car culture is a very big part of the local psyche.

As an important port of call for the British Empire, it wasn’t long after the motor car was invented that the first examples started arriving on the islands. The year 1904 saw the importation of the first two examples: a Siddeley, bought by a Goz itan businessman, and a Cadillac, purchased by the noble Inguanez family of Mdina.

Within a few months, more of these karozzi tan-nar (fire-propelled cars, as the bemused locals called them) arrived, and a fledgling motorised bus service also appeared.

By the 1960s, certain models of Alfa Romeo, Austin, Morris and Hillman vehicles were even being built in a local factory;

families were starting to own more than one vehicle and some Maltese began to cross over to Sicily to take their holidays on the road.

The Maltese wholeheartedly embraced this form of transport, and today, car ownership is high . However, many look beyond the simple convenience of their daily A-B vehicles and display an a lmost American-level of adoration towards them.

Maltese drivers and auto engineers regularly achieve victory in international drag racing and drifting competitions; Maltese mechanics, their skills honed in the old Malta Dockyard and shipbuilding industry, are known to equal their Cuban counterparts when it comes to improvising how to keep old heaps on the road. And, of course, the old locally-built Malta buses became famous the world over.

Over and above that are the private garages, containing thousands of shiny, rare, Italian, British, French, German and American motors, each polished to within an inch of its automotive life and only allowed to see the sunshine on a Sunday morning drive. Unless it’s raining, of course.

It was, therefore, only a matter of time before Malta’s very own mini-Mille Miglia came into being, with a little help from French entrepreneur Thierry Giovannoni who, in 2007, set the wheels in motion for first ever Classic Car Grand Prix on the Valletta coastal ring road.

Two years later, enthusiasts set up the Valletta Grand Prix Foundation and the Malta Classic was transferred to its current home, the medieval city of Mdina, in 2011.

Every year, the Maltese drivers face stiffer competition from an ever-growing list of international participants, with personalities

such as Egon Hoffer, Guy Broad and John Burton (names that those in the know will recognise) shipping in one of their priceless machines for the event. Meanwhile, the international classic car press also takes an interest, with British motoring TV and magazine leading lights Fuzz Townshend, Paul Cowland and James Walshe among those who have recently rhapsodised about their experiences at the Malta Classic.

Over 70 pre-1976 cars participated in the last edition, including some genuinely unique vehicles; two-seater racers and other classics built between 1910 and 1975, as well as single-seat racing cars dating from 1930 to 1960...

This year’s event is being held from 5th to 8th October, and when the chequered flag is waved for the final time , I foresee it being classed as another winner.

The line is often a trace of a manual gesture; a trace of the free expression of purely artistic thought; the expression of the artist’s ideas and impressions. Up to this day, artists question and challenge the line, its meaning and representation, its linearity and its culture. Through the works of local artists and collectors, this exhibition aims to take viewers out for a walk, just as Klee’s line does, to freely explore and understand the vast spectrum that is line.

CAPTURING THE MOMENT

FREELANCE PHOTOGRAPHER ALEX TURNBULL SHOOTS FROM THE SKY, BENEATH THE OCEAN AND ANYWHERE IN BETWEEN. BUT HIS HEART LIES WITH THE SEA AND ANYTHING THAT SAILS ABOVE OR LIVES BELOW IT. AND WHEN PRESSING HIS CAMERA’S SHUTTER RELEASE, HIS GOAL IS ONE: INDEFINITELY FREEZING A UNIQUE MOMENT IN TIME.

A DENTIST BY DAY AND A PHOTOGRAPHER… FOR PRETTY MUCH THE REST OF IT. WOULD THIS BE A CORRECT ASSUMPTION?

Yes, that is a perfect way of describing it. Photography has been a passion and business of mine throughout my days at university while studying, and it is now what I do while I am away from the clinic. Being able to have a perfect balance between two rather different careers keeps me excited and motivated to push the limits and be the best that I can be both as a dentist and a photographer.

WHEN DID IT ALL START? WHEN DID YOU DECIDE YOU WANTED TO DO THIS AND REALISED YOU COULD?

I always had a passion for capturing the moment – from before I was a teenager. However, I would say that I really started trying

to push my name out there as a photographer about 10 years ago, still very much as a hobby. Once I started getting hired for smaller projects, mainly local sailing regattas after I had captured my first two Rolex Middlesea Race events, the actual thought of creating a business and a career out of photography started to become a reality. This was about eight years ago.

YOU HAVE A VAST REPERTOIRE, SHOOTING FROM THE SKY, BENEATH THE SURFACE AND ANYWHERE IN BETWEEN; FROM YACHTING TO PEOPLE, LIFESTYLE, SOCIETY AND THE GREAT OUTDOORS. BUT WHERE DOES YOUR HEART LIE AND WHICH SUBJECT MATTER DO YOU IDENTIFY WITH MOST?

My heart most certainly lies with the sea, and anything that sails at its surface or dwells below it. I always loved the way

44 PHOTOGRAPHY
WORDS IL-BIZZILLA

sailing boats can move so gracefully under wind power, as well as handle the power of the sea. In more recent years, I have also enjoyed shooting anything from small speedboats to 100-metre superyachts, capturing their most unique and beautiful features. The underwater world attracts me because I get to be in a place where humans aren’t meant to be, exploring the lesser explored locations. The sea is a constantly moving medium, always creating unique moments in time.

INDEED, SAILING AND THE SEA FEATURE PROMINENTLY. ARE THESE A PART OF YOUR LIFE TOO?

They most certainly are. I am very fortunate to have flexible hours at my clinics, which allow me to be out at sea almost every day of the week, be it shooting a sailing race or a motor yacht that is for

sale, or just for leisure. Whenever I get the chance to be out sailing, be it on assignment documenting a race, or a training session on board a sailing yacht, or for pure pleasure, I take it. Till this day, every time I get on a boat, I feel that flutter of excitement!

YOUR WEBSITE INCLUDES A SECTION ON THE ENVIRONMENT. WHAT DO YOU SEEK TO CAPTURE HERE AND IS THERE A PARTICULAR MESSAGE YOU WANT TO CONVEY THROUGH THESE IMAGES?

My passion for the sea goes hand in hand with keeping it as free from litter as possible. Being an island in the middle of the Mediterranean, we end up having bays filled with litter below the surface every time the wind blows inshore. A few years ago, I began to document an incredible NGO known as Żibel, which organises monthly marine clean-ups and also removes highly

45 PHOTOGRAPHY
Alex Turnbull

dangerous abandoned fishing gear that remains trapped on the seabed. It gives me great satisfaction to be part of a community that removes so much detrimental litter so frequently, come rain or shine. The more images come out of these clean-ups, the more the greater com munity can understand how much litter lies below the surface, and also the more people are enticed to come and help out at the next event.

MALTA FEATURES PROMINENTLY IN YOUR WORK, WHICH IS UNDERSTANDABLE SINCE YOU ARE BASED HERE. BUT HAS IT PROVED TO BE PARTICULARLY INSPIRATIONAL… AND ‘PHOTOGENIC’? AND WHAT DO YOU FEEL IS THE MOST UNIQUE ASPECT OF YOUR ISLAND THAT EMERGES FROM YOUR WORK?

Yes, certain areas in Malta and Gozo never run out of different ways of capturing them, namely Valletta, the northwestern coastline of Malta and the sheer cliffs of Gozo. Valletta is an important backdrop behind most of the yachts I shoot. The bastions and all the prominent domes and steeples add so much to every image, be it from right at the water’s surface, or from an aerial vantage point.

YOUR PHOTOS BRING OUT THE TRAVELLER IN YOU. WHAT DOES TRAVEL MEAN TO YOU? AND WHAT SIGH IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO SHOOT?

Travelling is an opportunity for my mind to ingest new scenes; to feel excited about not knowing what’s behind the next corner. It is also an opportunity to experience different cultures and meet new people from all walks of life. The second question is much tricker for me as there are so many places I would like to explore. Right now, I am really enjoying travelling to numerous sailing events. However, on my bucket list is Greenland. I would really like to

capture icebergs and the vastness of the country as it seems to be a rather unexplored location.

DO YOU FEEL THAT PHOTOGRAPHY, AS AN ART, IS AS APPRECIATED NOW, GIVEN MOBILE PHONES WITH GOOD CAMERAS AND THE USE OF FILTERS ETC, WHICH HAS MADE IT ACCESSIBLE TO ALMOST ANYONE? Yes, I think so. I actually think that smartphones have allowed people to be more exposed to photography and this has allowed more people to capture their unique moments. One still needs a creative eye to capture an artistic, unique moment, and I strongly believe those who have honed that skill make do with anything from a smartphone to a full-blown camera set-up.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR OWN PHOTOGRAPHIC STYLE AND TECHNIQUE? WHAT SETS YOUR OWN IMAGES APART?

This is something that is constantly developing for me; what I always push myself to improve on. In my situation, I would say that with boats, which is 90 per cent of what I capture these days, I’m always looking for that sail filling with wind at just the right angle, with the light in the perfect spot, creating unique shadows and reflections on the surface of the water or on the hull of the boat. I’m also really striving to capture more details, be it a distinctive shimmer of the sea reflecting on a small area of a boat’s hull, or the emotion of the crew in a racing situation. I believe that my editing style is also recognised by many, as I like to create contrasty and punchy images. I would say indefinitely freezing a unique moment in time is always my goal when pressing the shutter release on my camera.

IN SEARCH OF LINE

ON 30 SEPTEMBER, THE NEW VICTOR PASMORE GALLERY IN VALLETTA OPENED ITS DOORS TO THE PUBLIC WITH THE LAUNCH OF FPM’S LATEST EXHIBITION, IN SEARCH OF LINE.

This exhibition project has been years in the making (it was 2019 when the last exhibition, Music in Malta – From Prehistory to Vinyl , was set up at the Cathedral Museum, Mdina), and it has also coincided with the opening of new premises that will permanently house the Pasmore collection as well as FPM’s administrative offices.

In Search of Line explores, in all its formats, one of history of art’s greatest subjects – the line. Artists have long been intrigued and challenged by the nature of the line that has manifested itself over time in so many ways – weaving, drawing, writing, singing and so forth. Through the works of mostly Maltese 20th-century artists together with a selection from the Victor Pasmore collection, the exhibition aims to break down, explore and understand the vast spectrum that is line.

As with all FPM exhibitions, the exhibits on display are primarily from private lenders together with a selection from public entities.

Decades of trust and collaboration have given the Foundation access to a network of private collectors willing to lend their artworks for exhibition purposes, thus allowing the public greater insight into the country’s treasures.

In Search of Line is much more than just an exhibition, and the project has included diverse interdisciplinary collaborations with other contemporary artists and institutions. The European Graduate School held a three-day seminar which culminated in The Musical Line , a performance connecting drawing and music held at the Casino Maltese, and dance artist Florinda Camilleri gave a livecomposition performance of light, sound, and movement in Moving in Lines: Mapping Affective Geometries

In Search of Line is open until 14 January 2024. For more information on visiting times and tickets please visit www.victorpasmoregallery.com

MALTA COMIC CON: WHERE POP CULTURE COMES TO LIFE

Back in 2009, a small congregation of superheroes, arch villains, anime characters and steampunk stars descended upon Spazju Kreattiv in Valletta. Back then, the sight of a bunch of people in costume outside of carnival season was unusual enough to draw many a stare, passersby asking what was happening within Malta’s cultural hub.

The answer was the first edition of Malta Comic Con (MCC), up till then a dream that the local comics scene considered unlikely to see fruition. The market was too small, Chris Le Galle – vice-president at Wicked Comics, which organises the event – was often told. Yet, the first year attracted a sizeable crowd of hundreds, and the numbers continued to grow year after year.

Today, the event has had to move to much bigger premises in Ta’ Qali, and it has extended its reach beyond Maltese shores. The programme invariably includes A-listers from international comic con circles, and a number of enthusiasts travel to Malta each year to join local fans, attracted by the idea of a relatively inexpensive package that brings them in close proximity to the headlining heroes.

And this year’s edition looks set to be buzzing, with a series of strong names headlining the programme – starting with actor Eric Roberts, of The Dark Knight and The Expendables fame, who will be joined by Yellow Power Ranger Kiperman Sullivan and anime voice legend Pietro Ubaldi.

Other instantly recognisable names from the scene include Scott Kolins (The Flash, The Avengers, Justice League and Blue Beetle) and Joe Benitez (Titans, Superman and Batman) among others. These will also be joined by cosplayer and writer Ani-Mia, as well as many other fan-favourite creators, who have already participated in previous MCC editions but are always eager to return and catch up with their Maltese fans.

“When we started, most people were unfamiliar with the concept of a convention, so our plan was always to start small and grow gradually. The convention was an instrumental platform to help the local comics community thrive, and one can say that they have both grown alongside each other,” Le Gall says.

52 CULTURE
WORDS RAMONA DEPARES
FROM HUMBLE ORIGINS, THE MALTA COMIC CON HAS GROWN INTO A FULLY-FLEDGED CONVENTION WITH A STRONG INTERNATIONAL REPUTATION.

Now, from humble beginnings that included five guests and a few aspiring local artists, the MCC has grown into a fullyfledged convention with a strong international reputation.

“These days, we average more than a 100 guests and exhibitors during each day of the MCC and, each year, the demand for tables keeps increasing from both foreign and local creators.

“Each year, we increase the convention activities and see familiar and new faces in terms of both exhibitors and attendants,” Le Gall says, adding that the event has also been instrumental in spurring the growth of local creators.

Understandably, it’s a proud moment when professional creators remark about the high standard of local artists, a number of whom started out with a small stand at the convention and went on to find professional employment in the industry.

Others went on to publish quality comics regularly, both with local and foreign publishers, while teaching and encouraging younger creators. Then, there are those who found employment in various related fields, such as film, graphic design, gaming and marketing.

The success of the convention has attracted the attention of the international industry, with pop culture journalist Chris J. Thompson stating: “Malta Comic Con has gone on to become a recognised and respected entry in the global comics calendar. I look forward to it as much, if not more than Angouleme, San Diego, or any of the other wonderful events I’ve had the privilege of attending worldwide.”

This year’s programme includes a good mix of events that crosses genres, ranging from combat demonstrations to various Japanese culture appreciation activities, workshops, supervised ac tivities for kids, video and tabletop gaming, collectible exhibitions, retail stands, fun quizzes and other challenges. But t he most eagerly awaited segment is probably the annual cosplay competition, for which attendees are known to go all-out.

If you’re in Malta this October and you love yourself a good dose of pop culture, you’ve got your itinerary sorted. The two days of ‘the Con’, as it is affectionately referred to by regulars, see an eclectic mix of attendees that range from families with young children to teenagers who are just getting into comics, to scenesters who can recite the name of the most obscure Marvel artists.

The convention is known for providing an inclusive space to everyone, its comparatively small size an advantage in terms of fostering a strong community feeling even among strangers. The only really serious decision that needs to be taken before attending is whether to ride the 2023 Barbie and Wednesday Addams trend or whether to take a more traditional approach to your costume.

The Malta Comic Convention takes place on 28th and 29th October at the Malta Fairs and Convention Centre (MFCC) in Ta’ Qali between 11am and 7pm. www.maltacomiccon.com

DIVE IN

MALTA’S PACKED WITH PLENTY OF PLACES TO DISCOVER ON THE SURFACE – BUT DID YOU KNOW THERE’S A TREASURE TROVE OF HIDDEN GEMS AT THE BOTTOM OF ITS STUNNING WATERS?

HERE ARE SOME UNDERWATER SITES TO SEE AROUND THE MALTESE ISLANDS.

It’s no secret that Malta’s a divers' paradise. From wrecks to reefs, whether you’re a novice or an advanced diver, there’s a diving opportunity ready to welcome everyone into the water.

With over 50 dive schools in Malta, and around 80 dive sites comprising 48 reef, about 30 wreck and 25 cave dives, the Maltese Islands are the perfect place to pick up this hobby.

Here are our top three picks of some simply stunning sights to see below the surface:

ĊIRKEWWA MARINE PARK, MALTA

Featuring a natural pool to a depth of six metres, teeming with aquatic fauna and flora – as well as deeper dives which will take you to an underwater arch, and a submerged statue of Our Lady – this Natura 2000 site is an absolute playground for divers of any level.

HMS MAORI, VALLETTA, MALTA

Located in Malta’s iconic Grand Harbour, the HMS Maori is a shallow

dive at a maximum depth of 16 metres, and is the perfect opportunity for beginners to dip their toes into the world of wreck diving. The HMS Maori was sunk during WWII, and was eventually raised and transported to her final resting place just off St Elmo Bay.

BLUE HOLE, DWEJRA BAY, GOZO

Fans of Game of Thrones will be familiar with the iconic Azure Window, which collapsed during a storm on 8th March, 2017. While the natural arch was a popular tourist attraction in its day, the Blue Hole, also found in this area, still maintains its position as a mustsee spot for divers visiting Gozo.

Take the plunge into this natural rock formation and descend to a depth of 15 metres. Then swim through an underwater arch out into the open waters where you can discover the remains of the Azure Window itself in what is now known as the Azure Reef.

You can find a list of dive sites in Malta, as well as PADI-certified schools, by visiting padi.com/dive-sites/malta.

A GENRE OF ITS OWN

OCTOBER IS OPERA MONTH IN GOZO, BUT THE MUSIC IS ONLY SECONDARY TO THE COMMUNITY SPIRIT IT ELICITS AS SCORES OF VOLUNTEERS JOIN FORCES TO STAGE PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCES “OUT OF LOVE”.

When Matthew Sultana, head of production at Teatru tal-Opra Aurora in Gozo, tells me opera in Gozo is a “story of love”, he’s not referring to the storyline of this year’s production of Madama Butterfly

Speaking during a break from his day job as a senior civil servant, he explains why every year, he, along with dozens of others from the Gozitan capital Victoria, dedicate every spare minute of their free time to staging an opera for one night only.

“You cannot justify it financially. We get nothing in our pockets. We do it because we love the genre, we love the theatre and we love the place and the community it stands for. La patria . It’s a story of love. There is no other explanation. This is my life, and I cannot imagine life without it.”

Opera on Malta’s sister island of Gozo transcends all standard conventions of the genre. It is not just about the music. It is so much more. Yes, of course, the productions are of a supreme standard, with world-class performers in the title roles accompanied by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, spectacular scenery and couture costumes designed by local fashion designers.

They are everything you would expect of an opera production worthy of the name and ticket price.

But the annual operas staged every October by the Aurora and Teatru Astra in Victoria (yes, there are two opera theatres on the same street) are a veritable showcase of community spirit, uncompromising passion and dedication.

The two theatres are not just landmarks of the city, but they are also the beating hearts of the locality because they belong to the local band clubs, which were both established 160 years ago.

Teatru Astra was the first grand theatre to be built and forms part of the vast complex belonging to Soċjetà Filarmonika La Stella. Not to be outdone, the rival band club, Leone Philharmonic Society, built an even bigger theatre dedicated specifically to opera, the Aurora, just across the road, and proceeded to stage the first ever opera in Gozo in Januar y 1977, which just so happened to be Madama Butterfly.

Band clubs are an institution on the Maltese Islands. They are the traditional cultural and social hub of a community, supporting the

feast of the local patron saint, so it is not surprising that a theatre owned by a band club would revolve around the community and bring that community together.

Opera music was played in the streets of Gozo long before that first staged production in 1977. Popular arias would be performed by the bands as contemporary musical hits of the day.

“People in Gozo have long been fond of operas because their only source of live musical entertainment were the bands and they used to perform arias and overtures from operas. Some opera

music reached Gozo only 10 or 15 years after it was composed,” explains Matthew.

Fuelled by a healthy convivial rivalry, the two theatres have now established a brief but exciting annual opera season in October. In fact, despite staging the most well-known titles such as Rigoletto, which the Astra is returning to this year on 26th and 28th October, for the third time in its history, the opera in Gozo can be defined as a genre in its own right.

“What you see on stage is an opera like the others, but the way it brings the community together makes it a completely different

genre,” points out Matthew, who was 14 when he first got involved as an ancillary actor carrying a banner. “Opera in Gozo is a genre in itself. Not even the one in Malta is created in the same manner.”

And that difference is all down to the army of volunteers who work on the productions. “We are all volunteers. That is a prerequisite. If you’re paid, you can’t be at the decision table,” insists Matthew, who juggles two jobs and family duties around his theatre life. “I am at the theatre every single day from 8pm till midnight.”

The Aurora’s production of Madama Butterfly on 14th October will involve some 200 volunteers, including chorus, backstage crew, seamstresses and wardrobe, props, ushers, set builders, flower arrangers and cleaners.

The opera is the theatre’s biggest night of the year. In fact, it is the only evening when it is used as its original intended purpose. The rest of the year, it remains mostly closed and dormant and reverts to being “just” a band club.

“We go every day because it is our band club. If I am at home and I have nothing to do, I don’t turn on the TV; I go to the band club. Before putting up the opera, we have to transform the place into a theatre after the mess of our festa on 15th August. When we’re an opera house on opera night, that’s the g lory of the social club.”

The Astra, on the other hand, has a busier calendar, staging not only opera, but also highly anticipated musicals and the Christmas panto. Next year, they will produce not one but

two operas: the world premiere of Valeriana in May by their late musical director Mro Joseph Vella, a co-production with Festivals Malta; and in October, Verdi’s Giovanna d’Arco , which has not been performed on the Maltese Islands since 1852.

They may be volunteers, but that’s not to infer that they are amateurish in any way. The productions attract internationally establishe d talent in the title roles. This year, Astra’s Rigoletto stars Simone Piazzola in t he title role, Enkeleda Kamani as Gilda and Gianluca Terranova as the Duke of Mantua.

Gozitan set builders from Teatru Astra have created sets for operas in Sicily and Rimini, while the Aurora contributed some costumes to a Franco Z eff irelli touring production of Aida . “Gozo contributing to the home of opera,” quips Michael Formosa, Teatru Astra president.

While nurturin g and fostering the community’s skills, the operas offer other benefits to th e residents. “This is a good opportunity for people in the community to get exposure to the highest form of theatre production, to teamwork, which is an important life skill, and to do voluntary work,” explains Michael, who started helping out as a theatre atte ndant in his teens.

He is e specially keen to point out that there are plenty of young people involved in the production, and the audience is also getting younger, possibly attracted by the glamour of a gala night out. “We want t o keep that volunteer experience thriving because it’s very rewarding. We w ant to nurture that further,” he adds.

An auditor by profession, Michael must “meticulously manage time between my professional commitments in Malta and my responsibil ities at the theatre.” Like most of the volunteers on his team, he’ll be using his vacation leave to focus on the theatre in the runup to the shows.

That “h ealthy rivalry” between the two theatres is also a source of inspiration. “It makes us proud as people from Victoria,” says Michael. “It’s unique. B ut it’s healthy from a strategic perspective as we can engage together in key discussions with the government, so there is also that ele ment of collaboration. We obviously want to be better and to improve on what we’ve achieved.

We want to outdo ourselves to continue building on our good product.” That’s the spirit.

CHASING WAVES AND DREAMS

WITH A PASSION FOR DIVING AND AN UNYIELDING DREAM OF PURSUING PHOTOGRAPHY AS HIS PROFESSION, JASPER MULDER'S JOURNEY FROM A DIVING INSTRUCTOR TO AN UNDERWATER PHOTOGRAPHER IS A TALE OF DEDICATION, INNOVATION AND AN UNQUENCHABLE THIRST FOR THE PERFECT SHOT.

Living in Malta for seven years provided Jasper Mulder with the perfect playground to explore his passion for diving and the underwater world.

As a diving instructor, Jasper's connection with the ocean deepened, but it was his interest in photography that truly propelled him into a new dimension. He started acquiring photography gear and learning the intricacies of capturing shots around and in the water. Jasper observed that the deeper he ventured into the ocean, the more colours faded from the scene. To counteract this, he learned to master the use of flash to restore vibrancy to his images.

Now studying photography at university in his native Netherlands, Jasper is on a mission to capture the dynamic energy of surfers.

It was during a surf trip to Sri Lanka that Jasper's passion for surf photography was truly ignited. He found that riding waves was an exhilarating experience, and he was drawn to the challenge of fre ezing these moments in time. He began experimenting with different angles and techniques to capture the essence of surfing, often placing himself in the water as close to the action as poss ible.

Jasper's unique approach to surf photography involves a delicate balance between riding the waves and capturing them on camera.

“I personally enjoy working with slow shutter speeds while taking photos in the water; this way, I can create my own image; an image you cannot see with your own eyes,” he reveals.

66 PHOTOGRAPHY
WORDS IL-BIZZILLA

T his balance isn't without its challenges as Jasper needs to account for the unpredictable nature of waves, wipeouts and the physical demands of maneuvering within the wave's impact zone.

Jasper advises both aspiring photographers and surfers to “enjoy the moment and live in the moment ”. The sentiment might sound like a cliché, but it's this approach that allows him to capture authentic and emotionally resonant images.

He also emphasises the importance of finding one's unique perspective in the crowded field of photography. “Try not to compare yourself with other photographers. Find what you're best at and what you enjoy the most. People will notice your uniqueness.”

Jasper’s journey is one of relentless pursuit and unfaltering passion. His dream job is to be a professional surf photographer, traveling to different corners of the world to capture the beauty

and power of the sport and the ocean. His vision includes working with magazines and brands, contributing his expertise to surf competitions and even attempting unconventional challenges like underwater cliff diving photography.

Every click of his camera is an invitation to get immersed in the world he sees – a world where waves and dreams converge in breathtaking harmony. Jasper's portfolio showcases the synergy between his love for the ocean and his artistry in photography, painting a vivid picture of the world below the surface and the action atop the waves.

As he continues to chase waves and capture moments, his impact on the world of surf photography is bound to be as deep and enduring as the ocean he so passionately explores.

RESTORING NATURE

CHADWICK LAKES HAS BEEN GIVEN A NEW LEASE OF LIFE THROUGH A REGENERATION PROJECT THAT TAKES INTO CONSIDERATION THE HISTORY AND ENVIRONMENT OF THE VALLEY, WELCOMING NATURE-LOVING VISITORS ALONG ITS TRAIL.

Chadwick Lakes is one of the most ecologically important valley systems in Malta – an environmental hub that sustains a fragile natural ecosystem to be observed and enjoyed along its 2km trail.

Lying at the limits of Rabat and Mtarfa in a stretch of the Fiddien valley, the lakes, formed from the construction of dams in different sizes and shapes, extend to Wied il-Għasel in the periphery of Mosta. The presence of water in these large catchment areas, in what is also known as Wied il-Qlejg ħ a, has created a diverse habitat that is characteristic of Mediterranean valley systems.

It was in the second half of 19th century that Sir Osbert Chadwick (1844-1913) was asked to coordinate a water supply system for Malta at a time when its population continued to increase. He planned several dams with the intention of retaining as much rainwater as possible. Hence the name Chadwick Lakes.

Over a century later, in 2020, the Energy & Water Agency embarked on a project to regenerate the area in an environment-friendly manner, based on detailed studies that provided a clear picture of the approach that needed to be taken. This project was part-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, under Operational Programme I – European Regional and Development Fund 2014 – 20.

Focused mainly on the ecological restoration of the valley system, the studies investigated its level of degradation, the proliferation of invasive species and the damage they were causing to the whole e co system. They also identified measures required to protect endemic spec ies characteristic of the natural Maltese habi tat

The project also included th e repair and restoration of banks and retaining walls and th e removal of debris and silt deposits from the existing dams, while the valley’s rain harves ting capacity was further expanded.

The EWA project aimed at allowing the natural habitat to re-establish itself, recreating the water catchments and also establishing a trail through the whole 2km stretch of the valley between Mtarfa and Fiddien for locals and tourists to explore and enjoy.

Today, following the restoration project, the valley is vibrant with different vegetation and species, including the Painted Frog – the only amphibian found in the Maltese Islands. Its population at Chadwick Lakes is the largest in Malta, but it is becoming less common due to climate change and the ever-increasing invasive species.

At Chadwick Lakes, visitors can also come across white willows and white poplars, both protected indigenous trees, as well as the caper bush and various birds, such as the European robin, Cetti’s warbler and the Spanish Sparrow.

The trail starts from the Fiddien Box, a structure once used as a water distribution chamber to direct the outflow of water from several springs in the area into a pipe network.

It leads on to a series of dams and bridges, presenting visitors with a unique opportunity to experience the natural valley system and its interesting features, flora and fauna. The route is also punctuated by facts and details of historical and environmental relevance, highlighted in a series of information panels.

Ecological restoration work s are ongoing, both with regards to vegetation and also to fauna. Among these is the removal of invasive species, specifically the Red Swamp Crayfish and the Great Reed, to help the valley system continue regaining its optimal status.

The Chadw ick Lakes Trail is a must on the itinerary of visitors to the Maltese Islands, who are seeking to experience a different environmental setting and appreciate the characteristic country views. Walking the trail is also a family-friendly activity, with the f irst part catering specifically for children to play in a safe space, surrounded by nature in a special area of conservation of national significance.

KEEPING THE ART ALIVE

GENERATIONS OF PASSIONATE ARTISANS ARE TAKING THE UNIQUE MALTESE ART OF GANUTELL FROM THE PAST TO THE FUTURE, KEEPING THE TRADITIONS AND AGE-OLD TECHNIQUES STRONG, AS WELL AS THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX AND WORKING ON INNOVATIVE, MODERN TWISTS TO THIS HERITAGE.

The centuries-old art form of ganutell – exquisitely delicate flowers made from pearls, wire and thread – has remained alive through the love and dedication of the masters of this uniquely Maltese craft and the younger generation helping it evolve.

Dainty and elegant, ganutell flower pieces are steeped in local history. Thin pieces of wire are individually formed into petals with pearls, sequins and stones. Beads were used to decorate the centre gem, but now bouillon wire is more popular.

The art of ganutell flowers was present in Malta even before the arrival of the Knights of the Order of St John. The first artists were nuns and monks in their monasteries. They elevated the artwork to such a high level that the Knights used to commission pieces to send to Rome as gifts for the Pope.

“Ganutell mounts were mostly found in churches and houses of wealthy people,” says octogenarian Maria Kerr, who has been working ganutell for decades and is second to none. “After the war, many of these mounts were lost, and it took some time for them

to be replaced. As the material used was always costly, few could afford it. For a long period, ganutell was nearing its natural death.”

In fact, it only started to revive about 26 years ago, Maria points out. Through modern communication, it spread in Malta and all over Europe, India and Japan. “Its use has not changed in popularity because it is still found in churches, in households, for bridal headdresses and bouquets, and smaller mounts in box frames or under glass domes.”

Maria was a bridalwear designer and seamstress and, 25 years ago, took up the art of ganutell. Over the years, she has made countless beautiful, handmade and colourful ganutell pieces, raising her to the top of her craft. She explains it is an intricate art that needs imagination, precision, perseverance, a feeling for colours and infinite hours of hard work.

“My passion for flowers makes me feel good even on a difficult day. I sit down quietly in my studio and create petals, details and leaves for each ganutell flower. I play with colours, but instead of paint,

I use satin thread. I am now 80 years old, so it takes more time to create the design. But once I’ve seen it in my mind, I start.”

It takes Maria a couple of hours to complete the first flower, and she continues working until the project is ready. “Sometimes it takes months and even years, but my motto is ‘where there's a will, there's a way’,” she says.

Maria argues that ganutell's flowers cannot be compared to other art forms. “Ganutell has different techniques, and each flower's material must be prepared beforehand.”

Her hopes are that the craft will have some standardisation. "Tutors who can properly teach this beautiful art, using the right technique, materials and tools, will help keep the tradition alive,” she maintains.

The demand for ganutell is still there, especially because it is very difficult to restore the old pieces. And younger generations are interested in the art form and taking it seriously.

Janine Cardona, the founder of Janine Jewellery, is among these. She is giving ganutell a fresh look by working it into some of her jewellery pieces. “We are used to seeing ganutell adorning our churches and homes in the form of bouquets. This tradition should be respected and kept alive. However, this is limiting,” she says.

“That is what inspired me to take ganutell to another level, give it a modern look in jewellery and fashion accessories, drawing this traditional craft closer to younger generations.”

Janine came up with the idea of incorporating ganutell in jewellery when she presented a drop necklace, Il-Ganutell Ġojjell , for the Ġieħ l-Artiġjanat Awards 2021 edition, organised by the Malta Crafts Foundation. This year, she submitted a statement necklace titled Rożina for the 2022 edition.

“I have also created a collection of simpler pieces using basic techniques in ganutell for a more casual look. The positive feedback I received motivates me to continue developing my line,” Janine says.

She learned ganutell the traditional way from her aunt; then, she applied what she learned to her Systems of Knowledge aesthetics project in sixth form, where she recreated Botticelli's famous painting, Primavera , with ganutell pieces.

“I believe that everything must be done to keep this craft alive in the Maltese Islands. We should keep on creating bouquets for churches and other traditional ways. However, we must go a step further and think outside the box. Attempts have already been made, using ganutell to create hair accessories, bouquets and souvenirs for occasions such as Holy Communions and weddings, as well as jewellery.”

Janine believes incorporating the ethereal ganutell pieces in jewellery will help secure its longevity, mainly because the pieces enhance the beauty and confidence of the wearer. “Having women wear eye-catching ganutell creations, innovatively showcasing a Maltese craft, will, in my opinion, highlight the importance of keeping ganutell alive in the future.”

SOME GOOD FOOD FOR THOUGHT

TALES FROM THE MALTESE KITCHEN: ĊENTINARJA

BOIL IT, BAKE IT, FRY IT, OR MUNCH IT RAW, ĊENTINARJA IS ONE OF THE MOST VERSATILE AND NUTRITIOUS VEGETABLES OF THE MALTESE AUTUMN KITCHEN. BUT MANY STILL DON’T KNOW HOW TO USE IT.

The litmus test of reaching full adulthood is when you are considered savvy enough to buy fruit and vegetables from your trusted greengrocer. Newbies naively accept what the greengrocer chooses for them. Not so, the seasoned grown-up. After casting a critical eye over the produce on display at the back of an open truck, they would then proceed to dig through the wooden crates, expertly casting off any specimen that did not meet their exacting standards before selecting the freshest the field had to offer.

And the shopping basket would not be complete without a bunch of karfus u tursin (Maltese celery and parsley) thrown in free of charge. At age 48, I am still not considered worthy of this task according to my 86-year-old father, who insists on choosing the fruit and veg himself.

Supermarkets have diluted and de-personalised this wholesome experience of selecting ingredients, and I miss it. Food in Malta is never about nutrition; it is so much more. Food evokes emotions. It is a social event; the star of any gathering, where guests are served the biggest portion as a sign of respect.

Choosing the right ingredients is critical, which is why we have such strong feelings about who sells the best produce and how best to cook it. And we are just as opinionated about the taste of single ingredients.

Take the ċentinarja (chayote). Never have I come across a vegetable so divisive as this humble pear-like gourd. A (non-scientific) survey (read: friends and family) resulted in a strong 50-50 split between the lovers and the haters. Some had never even heard of it, despite

FOOD

growing so ubiquitously and voraciously that, once upon a time, you could pick them up, literally, off the ground for free.

We couldn’t even agree on whether it is a fruit or a vegetable. It’s both, sort of. Botanically a fruit, it is used and prepared as a vegetable, and every part of it is edible, including the skin, flesh and seeds. Overshadowed by the trendier and equally versatile courgette, ċentinarja slipped out of the minestra pot and almost into oblivion. Today, its less common appearance in selected shops is met with curiosity, but some still consider it a staple of their autumn dishes.

“Ċentinarja has certainly been around for many years in Malta and is perhaps more popular with the older generations,” says Caine Vella, manager of the organic farm Vincent’s Eco Estate in Mġarr, which still grows the vegetable. “It is becoming more popular nowadays, although it could certainly do with more awareness. Zucchini have remained a very popular vegetable in comparison to the ċentinarja , although shops that do sell this vegetable usually sell most, if not all, the produce.”

Originally hailing from cent ral Mexico, but now grown in many other countries under different names, the ċentinarja grows without much fuss and is naturally organic as most insects ignore it.

“Simply chuck a fruit into a shady corner of the garden and let it grow on its own,” chuckled one farmer. Once settled in a shady, humid spot, the tree starts growing from March onwards, eventually producing hundreds of the green, ridged, pear-sized

vegetable. Hence its name from the Italian word for hundred, cento “It can take over the entire garden. Once you have ċentinarja , you’ll have it forever.”

While many turn their nose up at it, proclaiming it too bland, ċentinarja is extremely versatile as it complements any other ingredient beautifully. It is also packed with nutrients, antioxidants, essential vitamins, minerals and fibre and is especially high in folate and low in calories and carbohydrates. In other words, it should be the health-conscious eater’s best friend.

Traditionally used in soups when the “more modern” zucchini are in short supply, Caine suggests a “more adventurous” method of eating ċentinarja – serving it raw. “Slice it thinly on a platter with traditional Maltese produce, such as ġbejna (goat’s cheeselets), sundried tomatoes in oil and galletti (water biscuits).” Try frying chopped ċentinarja to make a version of the Maltese scrambled egg dish, balbuljata , or bake it stuffed with peppered cheeselets.

For my friend Celine Petrillo, the ċentinarja holds a special place in her heart as it was one of the favourite vegetables of her recently deceased father Nazju Abela. “Mum used to buy it occasionally for daddy’s Saturday corned beef soup. She would chop it up to add it. Well, half of it really, because dad used to eat the not-so-perfect cubes in the meantime.”

And on 22nd October, his birthday, Celine will be cooking that special soup once again, perhaps saving a few raw and imperfect pieces of ċentinarja for the good old times.

WORDS MARIGOLD FOUNDATION

DON’T STAND STILL

October is breast cancer awareness month all over the world, and every year since 2015, The Marigold Foundation has been running a nationwide camp aign to raise awareness about female and male cancers.

The main campaign goal is to educate, prevent and motivate the public to take care of their health, know the signs, lessen the fear to self-check and undergo the necessary screenings.

This year, the campaign, bearing the tagline Don’t Stand Still, will focus on common female and male cancers, namely breast, ovarian, cervical, testicular, and prostate cancer. The main message urges people to self-check and get tested, while other prevention measur es, such as getting vaccinated against the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), are also being put at the forefront.

Parallel to the education and prevention efforts, the campaign will also be raising awareness on the impact of cancer on the

mental health of survivors, patients and their caregivers. The goal here is to urge people to break the silence and reach out. Often, the mental well-being aspect of battling and recovering from cancer is overlooked, and this, unfortunately, has horrible consequences. This is why The Marigold Foundation is including mental health as well this year.

Through its campaign, The Marigold Foundation raises funds to support all cancer NGOs on the island to further their cause and provide much needed resources. It also fundraises to acquire tools and systems to be used in cancer care at Mater Dei Hospital.

This October, the foundation will be donating a state-of-the-art Canon Aplio diagnostic ultrasound system, financed by funds raised during the nationwide Pink October-Movember 2022 Campaign. This equipment is pivotal in the provision of brachytherapy required to treat cervical cancer. To date, patients were required

to travel to London for treatment as this was not available in Malta. But thanks to The Marigold Foundation, cervical cancer patients will soon be treated at the Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre.

Throughout the years, the Pink October-Movember Campaign has been communicated using attention-grabbing visuals, intended to stand out and stop people in their tracks. This year’s nude stone and marble statues, portraying the human body, zone in on areas impacted by the most common cancers in focus. The idea behind these visuals takes life from the campaign tagline – Don’t Stand Still. The statues are captured in a moment, defined by their creator, allowing us to pause and reflect on our responsibility to take action and take care of our bodies.

IL-BIZZILLA TALKS TO JOSEPH ZAMMIT

HEAD & NOMINATED PERSON GROUND OPERATIONS

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED AT AIR MALTA AND IN WHAT ROLE?

I joined Air Malta way back in 1987 as a Passenger Handling Agent. Throughout the past 36 years, I was involved in a number of projects spreading over different units. But my main involvement was Ground Operations, where, for the past 10 years, I have held the position of Head & Nominated Person Ground Operations.

WHAT DO YOU MOST ENJOY ABOUT YOUR CURRENT ROLE?

When it comes to operations, every day is a different day. The number of daily challenges we have to manage makes our job more interesting, with the ultimate goal being our customers’ satisfaction in the most timely and safest way.

AND WHAT’S THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT?

Time is the most challenging aspect of our daily operations. Decisions have to be taken within very limited timelines to avoid disruptions and keep the operat ions going. This can be quite challenging when you need to bring together all stakeholders engaged on various projects within very tight schedules.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING IN YOUR FREE TIME?

I try to cycle as much as possible. For me, this is not just a sport that keeps a person physically fit, but it also gives the opportunity to visit beautiful places both in Malta and other countries, ultimately contributing to a healthier life from all aspects.

WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE EUROPEAN DESTINATION AND WHY?

Generally, my holidays are based on attending cycling events. This makes Italy my favourite destination, especially the north. The views and the peacefulness when cycling up in the Dolomites are impressive and not to be missed.

WHICH HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE DESTINATION AND WHY?

Last year, I cycled around 1,000km round Sardegna in seven days. This was one of my best travel/ cycling experiences. The views, the terrain, the cuisine and the people were all beautiful.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE LANGUAGE?

Being Maltese, I am proud that we have our own language even though we are a very small country. I also consider Italian as a favourite language. I have been spending time in Italy since I was a child and the language always attracted me. When I am there, I love engaging in discussions with Italians.

FAVOURITE MOVIE?

The Godfather.

FAVOURITE GENRE OF MUSIC? Rock.

DREAM HOLIDAY DESTINATION? Egypt.

WHERE WOULD YOU RECOMMEND VISITING IN THE MALTESE ISLANDS?

The northwest coast of Malta is not to be missed; the views there are particular.

PREFERRED MALTESE DISH?

Timpana – baked macaroni in pastry.

FAVOURITE MALTESE EXPRESSION?

“Li tiżra' taħsad ” ... In English, it translates to: ‘You reap what you sow.’ This means that future consequences are shaped by present actions.

A working theatre for over 300 years, the Manoel has enthralled theatre and performing arts enthusiasts from all around the world.
