September has always been a favourite month; I loved going back to school as a child, the new pencil case and stationery, the new opportunities to learn and meet new people - which as an adult are now year-round - but there’s still something special about this month. Indeed, I am moving on to a new ‘school’ but before I go, I’ll leave you with this issue, which like an emporium, is brimming with interesting things, and is full of opportunities to learn about and discover Malta.

We take you to a traditional fishing village which has lots going on around it too; we introduce you to a cool collective of artists and share exhibition info with you from some others. We find out about the liberating sport of freediving, celebrate Maltese Folk Music and we take you on ‘The Camino Maltés ’, a new walking route.

We learn the origins of some ship graffiti, and while on the subject of writing, we meet an artisan who specialises in typefaces seen locally. Take a peek inside the Malta Postal Museum; read some old letters and find out about stamp design over time, and marvel at the process - which still baffles me - of getting a piece of a paper from one home to another.

The month is packed full of events – you really will have fun planning your timetable – music, history, food, parties – you name it, you can immerse yourself in it here. And to sustain you, we have a long list of restaurants whose food won’t remind you of school dinners to indulge at.

MARSAXLOKK’S CHARM LIES IN ITS LAID-BACK AND AUTHENTIC ATMOSPHERE. EXPLORING THE LOCAL LIFE AND ENGAGING WITH THE FRIENDLY LOCALS CAN BE JUST AS REWARDING AS VISITING THE TOURISTIC SITES.

I have chosen to buy my first home in Marsaxlokk – while it is well known for being a charming fishing village, known for its picturesque harbour, colourful traditional luzzu boats, and bustling fish market, there are more places that my camera and I would like to share with you.

The first is a watering hole of a different kind - St Peter’s Pool – a hole in the rock which you will recognise from promotional materials. It's an impossibly beautiful spot for swimming, snorkelling, and cliff diving. The crystal-clear waters and rocky surroundings make it a unique and refreshing place to visit via tourist buses which get relatively close by – you do need to walk a bit but the swim is the reward!

If you do like to walk, take a hike along the Delimara Peninsula, which offers stunning coastal views and serene landscapes. It's a less touristy area and perfect for nature enthusiasts and those

seeking tranquility. You’ll get the chance to discover Delimara Fort which occasionally opens to the public to show off its impressive canons and the striking Lighthouse too; I think it could be an Edward Hopper painting!

You’ll probably arrive at the waterfront promenade which is lined with cafes, restaurants, and souvenir shops. It's a great place to soak in the local atmosphere, enjoy fresh seafood, and watch the fishermen going about their daily routines. The colourful fishing boats are part of the fabric of Marsaxlokk and you can go on a fishing boat tour to experience the life of a Maltese fisherman. Some tours offer the opportunity to help with the catch or learn about traditional fishing techniques too.

Located near the waterfront is the small but charming St Paul's Chapel, which is dedicated to the Apostle who is said to have landed in Malta after a shipwreck. It offers a peaceful place for

reflection and is adorned with traditional religious artwork. This quaint chapel holds historical importance as it dates back to the medieval period. Another place of worship, the Church of Our Lady of Pompeii, is a beautiful church in the village core, featuring unique architecture and religious art. It's worth a visit to appreciate the local religious and cultural heritage – even if you are not religious, the intricate work and the devotion really is quite incredible.

Although not directly in Marsaxlokk but nearby on the way to Bir żebbugia, the Għar Dalam Cave and Museum are worth a visit. The cave is a prehistoric site with a rich history, and the museum displays a collection of fossils and artifacts that provide insight into Malta's ancient past.

Marsaxlokk's bustling Sunday market is a vibrant and lively affair, where local vendors showcase their wares, including fresh seafood, artisanal crafts, and unique souvenirs. It's a fantastic opportunit y to experience the authentic Maltese market atmosphere.

FORT DELIMARA

Overlooking the beautiful Marsaxlokk Bay, Fort Delimara dates back to the 19th century. With its strategic location and impressive architecture, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

The instagrammable bay really deserves the trip and walk down the stairs that lead to it – alternatively, charter a boat and head in to swim in the crystal clear waters. Fill your feed and be the envy of your friends!

COLOURFUL DOORS

These houses were originally fisherman’s cottages and today are short-let properties. Perfectly located close to restaurants and the seafront, they are decorated to be similar to Pinto’s Wharf in Valletta.

DELIMARA LIGHTHOUSE

St anding tall on the rugged coastline, the Delimara Lighthouse is an iconic landmark that is now available to book for a short stay. Enjoy a scenic stroll to the lighthouse and admire the stunning vistas of the sea and cliffs.

Located by the water’s edge, the Monument pays tribute to the fishermen of Malta. The bronze statue shows a father returning from fishing with the haul being met by his son, daughter and cat.

DEEP AND MEANINGFUL ART

TINA HAS SINCE 2018 EXPLORED PERSONAL, POLITICAL AND CONFESSIONAL THEMES IN HER ART. SHE IS A SELF-TAUGHT ARTIST WHO HAS EMBARKED ON A REMARKABLE ARTISTIC JOURNEY. HAVING SPENT TWO TRANSFORMATIVE YEARS IN BARCELONA, SHARING A STUDIO WITH INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS, TINA HAS HONED HER UNIQUE ARTISTIC VOICE.

A focus on the human form has been evident throughout Tina’s career. Her work is characterised by distinctive brushstrokes, personal experiences, and thorough research and documentation before translating her vision onto the canvas.

Her ongoing exhibition consists of oil on canvas or board paintings that are reminiscent of a quintessential Maltese summer in the Mediterranean sea. An element of nostalgia is ever present in these paintings which remind Tina very much of her childhood with long summer days and months spent by and in the sea.

Her paintings that are executed in oil on board or canvas are based on research that she herself undertook in the last year, studying people and their bodies as they are in motion underwater with abruptly foreshortened limbs disappearing into the distance, showcasing their freedom and fluidity.

These figures also signify a sense of freedom that Tina herself seldom feels when she finds herself at the beach being ever so conscious about her own body. And yet, in contrast, the people she sees and studies seem so comfortable and nonchalant. A freedom that Tina envies.

The paintings, however, also possess an element of gratification to the viewer on looking at these paintings of headless bodies as

they move through the water. By removing the head, Tina aims to emphasise the sense of weightlessness and detachment from the world above. As her research continues, she delves deeper into the themes of freedom and tranquility that underpin her work. She wants viewers to explore their own relationship with water and to experience the freedom and release that it can offer. The floating figures become a symbol of escapism, representing the beauty and peace that can be found in the depths of water.

The sea is captured swiftly in very quick strokes with adequate refl ections of the objects, rocks and colours in the water. The subject in itself requires her to work quickly, and this explains the dripping or bleeding pain amply visible on several of these paintings.

Each painting also adequately captures the hot Mediterranean sun visibly gleaming on the water’s surface.

With an upcoming pursuit of a Master's degree in fine arts in Rome, Tina is poised to elevate her artistic prowess.

Bavarians take pride in their customs and festivals, such as Oktoberfest. There is no other better month to visit Munich than September! This year will be the 188th Oktoberfest celebration between September 16th to October 3rd. This world-renowned beer festival takes place every year - the ideal opportunity to experience the best of traditional German merry-making, food specialities, and craft beer.

If you'r e well-timed to be there on the first day of the festivities, reserve seating at an outdoor bar and watch the opening day parade go by with 9,000 participants marching in traditional clothing representing the different clubs and villages of Bavaria

- then begin the celebrations with tent hopping! At Oktoberfest, beer gardens are set up in tents, each with a different atmosphere and theme, offering a new traditional food to indulge in. For the more daring, have a turn on the amusement rides, or if you feel the beer having its way with you, play the arcade games and attempt your go to win prizes.

Yet, even if you miss Oktoberfest, you will not miss out on the famous beer culture Munich is known for. The city's beer halls and gardens are integral to its social life. Have your experience of local bear culture and head to the sought-after Roofgarden Lounge on the 6th floor in the Hotel Bayerischer Hof. Featuring a breakfast buffet as well as an à la carte seating area in plush, modern interiors. Another well-recommended beer garden is the smaller Keisergarten in an art nouveau house with a lovely shaded area. Dine at its exquisite eatery, with regional beers and wines accompanying your meal.

Ingenious as the nature of this city is, you'll find beer gardens on the water too! Book a ride on a passenger raft at Seitner Jose , and expect nothing but a thrill. Like no other raft on the water, you'll be accompanied by a live-instrumental band as you slide down a river with an overflowing pint in hand!

MUSIC IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF MALTA'S CULTURAL HERITAGE, REFLECTING THE ISLAND'S HISTORY AND DIVERSE INFLUENCES, PASSED DOWN THROUGH GENERATIONS, RETAINING ITS UNIQUE IDENTITY. ANDREW ALAMANGO IS WORKING TO CURATE EXAMPLES AND INVIGORATE THE SECTOR.

“The roots of Maltese folk music can be traced back to ancient times when Malta was ruled by Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Normans, and other civilizations. Each of these cultures left a mark on the island's musical expressions, contributing to the rich tapestry of Maltese folk music which is characterised in ‘Għana ’. It typically involves improvised verses and strong emotions, tackling various themes such as love, politics, and social issues and is often performed in a competitive manner during festas and gatherings. The wit and speed of the sung conversation makes it a spectacle to behold.

The lyrics of Maltese folk songs are central to conveying emotions and historical narratives. Themes range from love, heartache, and daily life to patriotic sentiments and stories of heroes and

legends. The captivating storytelling aspect of Maltese folk music has helped preserve the island's cultural heritage and oral tradi tions and whilst difficult to understand if you don’t sp eak the language, the feeling and emotion are evident, and nonnative speakers will certainly enjoy the experience.

Today, the guitar is an accompanying instrument for the għannej and is a 20th century development. Before that it was probably accompanied by a bowed harp or lyre-like instrument.

Thanks to technology like film cameras and audio reels, the Maltese documented their own family histories and lots of folk music. Recordings enabled the migrant community in Australia, Canada

and elsewhere to develop the tradition in these countries too. The Magna Żmien collects and digitises these recordings, films and images related to the Maltese and diaspora and Għana features in a big way in this communi ty archive.

The tradition is still popular with people connected to land, but it has seen a decline since the 80s, when we moved more into living in towns and a diff erent society. Between the height of its popularity of course there were other distractions like the music halls and now the digital age.

I feel i t is my duty to inform the public about the beauty of the scene, the poetry, the richness of the Maltese language, and how it evokes something which is very personal; raw almost. I'm trying to see how today’s mus icians and artists can take on aspects of this tradition so we can educate, inform, save and celebrate this wonderful musical tradition.”

DIVING

This natural cave located on the eastern side of Ramla Bay is very commonly confused with Calypso's Cave which is located on the other side of the same bay. Both are worth a visit and what a great Instagram shot!

INTO THE BLUE – A DIVER’S STORY

YOU CANNOT BE A GOZITAN AND NOT HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE SEA. THE BLUE SURROUNDING THE ISLAND IS PART AND PARCEL OF BEING GOZITAN. WE MET UP WITH FRANCO BUGEJA, A 45-YEAR-OLD SEASONED TRAVELLER AND FAMILY MAN WHO MAINLY IDENTIFIES AS A LOCAL DIVER AND DIVING INSTRUCTOR.

Franco’s love for diving goes back to his childhood years. With a hint of what can be described best as a mischievous smile, he reminisces about carefree days at the beach and how he and his friend had the first taste of diving at the age of fifteen. The underwater world beckoned, and the following year, Franco would repeat the experience. Since then, he has been hooked. He describes this second stint at diving as spellbinding, a marvellous evocative experience as he witnessed the underwater scenery he had seen before when snorkelling and swimming in the local bays. This was the turning point in his life, and he explains how upon resurfacing, he knew he had found his life’s calling.

At 18, Franco started diving, a habit that would take him to the beach every Sunday, come rain or shine. After seven years of diving, Franco qualified as an instructor in 2000. Initially, he planned to travel the world as a diving instructor. Eventually, he decided to work for two years on the island with a local diving school to gain enough experience, which is vital when diving is

undertaken professionally. At this point, he already knew the local dive sites like the back of his hand and focused on becoming more technically proficient.

As Franco talks about diving, there is no doubt that an authentic call of the sea exists. Franco goes as far as to say that he believes he did not look out for the sea, but the sea sought him out. Franco’s childhood memories are all about the sea. He describes life with his brothers when at every opportunity, they would run down to Ħondoq ir-Rummien bay to spend a day there. Winter did not deter the brothers, and despite the cold weather and his parents’ ‘nonpermission’ stance, he would still find a reason to enter the cold water. It is the same persistent call of the sea that Franco feels today. When it is calm, all problems are washed away, Franco says, adding that a swim, a snorkel and ultimately a dive is his cure for everything.

When asked about his favourite diving spots, Franco says Gozo is rich in beautiful dive sites. The Blue Hole is a spectacular dive,

and while the Azure window was unfortunately lost, the boulders have created a wonderful dimension below the surface. However, the Inland Sea dive pulls the strings on Franco’s heart as it evokes memories of when he ultimately decided that diving was his life. It is the spot where he fell in love with diving.

His most memorable encounter in the sea is one that involves sea horses. Fr anco explains the world of seahorses at Gozo’s Mġarr ix-Xini, giving it a lyrical vibe akin to fairytales. He remembers that in a particular year, Mġarr ix-Xini was swarming with herds of seahorses of different sizes and species. Franco was lucky enough to witness the rare experience of a seahorse g iving birth during a night dive. He poignantly describes this ethereal marvel of nature as the pregnant seahorse gave birth to thousands of tiny seahorses.

When it comes to challenges, Franco considers diving a straightforward sport when done with the proper safety precautions. Diving cannot be practised alone and thus requires a

dive buddy. That can be tricky to organise. Franco’s advice to those who have yet to try diving is very practical. He says it is like searching for a restaurant. It is essential to check the reputation and credentials of a dive centre. No extensive course is needed for a first dive, and discovering scuba diving with an instructor starts from very shallow waters, eventually leading to a deeper level when one is comfortable.

For Franco, diving is his way of being close to the sea. He cannot imagine life in any other way. Instructing others is what he ultimately enjoys most. Meeting new people and giving them a taste of underwater, which he is passionate about, is one of his life’s bigger blessings.

MARSALFORN –GOZO’S FISHING VILLAGE AND SEASIDE RESORT

Marsalforn is one of the larger bays of the islands. Surrounded by several hills, the seaside town’s main attraction is the clear blue crystalline sea – a scene which mesmerises in all seasons and is a joy to capture for both artists and photographers. As an anchorage point for fishermen, the brightly coloured fishermen’s luzzus have always been present in the harbour, and even today, one might still be lucky enough to meet fishermen hauling in their catch or tending to their nets at Il-Menqa which can be considered as the soul of Marsalforn. Naturally, this is also why Marsalforn is home to many seaside restaurants.

A SEASIDE TOWN COMPLETE WITH EVERYTHING

Marsalforn can be best described as a seaside town complete with everything, including a church dedicated to Saint Paul’s Shipwreck. The church’s steeple and visible clocktower from the bay adds a picturesque touch.

When choosing Marsalforn for your seaside holiday, there are many accommodation options - hotels, B&Bs, guesthouses and self-catering apartments. Many are conveniently located at most a mere five-minute walk from Marsalforn beach, and others perch out the slopes with glorious bay vistas and open sea views. Waking up to the amazing sunrise or witnessing the fiery sunset from balconies and terraces is a fantastic experience. A seaside holiday in a town like Marsalforn also means convenience because, in Marsalforn, one can find different shops and amenities, resulting in lesser trips to the rest of the island.

HIKING, SWIMMING, SNORKELLING, DIVING AND EVEN FISHING

Marsalforn is about enjoying the classic seaside holiday. You can kick off the day with a brisk walk at sunrise before the sun’s heat becomes fierce. One can stick to a pleasant walk along the promenade or be more adventurous and head off to the tracks to Xagħra or Qbajjar. A walk to Qbajjar is a like a walk along the water’s edge, especially

if one keeps walking on Xwejni and the saltpan area. Hiking inland means taking the route through Marsalforn Valley. For an amazing hike, trek further inland and climb the Merżuq Hill.

Swimming, snorkelling and or sunbathing are a must at Marsalforn. Along the shore, there are a variety of different swimming spots. Families with toddlers and young children favour Il-Menqa , a sandy area located just in front of the local police station and sheltered behind the promontory of the breakwater. Youngsters and stronger swimmers are keen on enjoying dips from the rocky areas, such as Il-Ponta ta’ Santa Marija and Għar Qawqla. Swimming at these points is considered deep-sea swimming and should be tackled only by robust swimmers and avoided altogether in rough weather.

Marsalforn is also home to various diving centres. Diving is one of the experiences many consider to be on the list of what to do in Gozo. While diving might not be everyone’s cup of tea, snorkelling is easier and a delightful experience to capture a glimpse of what lies beneath the surface.

Beyond the cent ral Marsalforn bay lies the pebbly inlet of Qbajjar and the cove of Xwejni , characteris ed by shallow pools surrounded by large boulders. Both Qbajjar and Xwejni are swimming zones and, like Marsalforn, are considered ideal fishing spots by those who enjoy angling.

THE DINING EXPERIENCE

Marsalforn is also notorious for its many seaside restaurants. Spoilt for choice at every hour of the day, Marsalforn is also about bars, cafeterias, gelaterias and other dining options. From fast-food kiosks and family-friendly restaurants to more refined dining spots, seafood is on most of the menus and having lunch or dinner at Marsalforn is a must for all seafood lovers.

VISIT THIS MUSEUM, POST HASTE!

THE MALTA POSTAL MUSEUM AND ARTS HUB IS A COMPACT BUT INTERESTING MUSEUM IN ARCHBISHOP STREET, VALLETTA, NEXT TO THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE AND NEAR THE GREEK CATHOLIC CHURCH. SPREAD OVER FOUR FLOORS, IT CAN BE FOUND NEXT TO THE TRADITIONAL ENGLISH PUB WHERE ACTOR OLIVER REED HAD HIS FINAL DRINK BEFORE PASSING.

The building which today houses the Museum, once belonged to Caterina Vitale (1566-1619), the first female pharmacist of the Knights Hospitaller. Bombed during World War II and rebuilt after the War, the beautifully restored typical Maltese property retains its Baroque façade.

The Museum is home to an extensive collection of artefacts and documents related to the island’s long and colourful history marking all major historic milestones during the last five hundred years. Selectively collected and professionally displayed, the objects tell the story of Malta's experiences of war and peace, governance, trade, love and politics. The permanent exhibition includes a run through of the island’s history from the 15th Century to the present day starting with the fascinating story of the Knights of St John and their postal system. Through the display of objects, the narration of stories and the interactive experiences, the museum highlights the important role played by the Post along the centuries. For the avid philatelists, the Museum has every Maltese postage stamp issued from 1860 to 2010 on display.

This building is often used to host both heritage and contemporary art exhibitions since the Museum boasts of two gallery spaces for art and culture lovers. The permanent art exhibitions include a collection of old photographic prints by Richard Ellis reproduced from his glass plates. Mr Ellis was born

in London in 1842 and landed on the island nineteen years later. In 1871, he opened his own photographic studio in Valletta. His photographic collection is considered to be the most comprehensive pictorial record of Malta during the Victorian and Edwardian periods.

The Museum also owns what is arguably the finest collection of artworks by Emvin Cremona under one roof. An avid stamp designer, Cremona is regarded by many as one of the best Maltese artists of the 20th century.

The Museum offers a large audio-visual room where one can view a fifteen-minute historical documentary. There is a boutique shop with specifically designed merchandise, inspired by the rich legacy of the Post and the Museum's own art collection. A dedicated kids' area on the upper floor welcomes children to play postie, watch educational videos and also participate in special activities for their age group.

The opening hours of the Malta Postal Museum and Arts Hub are 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday whilst on Saturdays it is open from 10am to 2pm. CAMINO MALT É S: TIME TO SAUNTER?

ACCORDING TO THE 19TH CENTURY ECOLOGICAL THINKER AND ENVIRONMENTAL ADVOCATE, JOHN MUIR, ‘TO SAUNTER’ IS PROBABLY DERIVED FROM PEOPLE ON PILGRIMAGES IN THE MIDDLE AGES REFERRED TO AS GOING TO ‘À LA SAINTE TERRE’, HENCE THE VERB ‘TO SAUNTER’.

Thinking of walki ng the Camino de Santiago? The 3,600km Camino Maltés, is now a recognised Camino de Santiago route or iginating from Malta and traver sing by land and sea through Malt a, Sicily, Sardinia, Barcelona and th e Cata lan / Ar agonés re gion of Spain until event ually reaching Santiago de Compostela. The walk has been developed by XirCammini, a Maltese voluntary organisation that represents the Federación Española de Asociaciones de Amigos del Camino de Santiago in collaboration with other regional Camino NGOs and government entities in Malta and Spain.

Local pilgrims can start their walk at St Paul’s Catacombs in Rabat and make their way through Żebbuġ, Siġġiewi, Qrendi, Żurrieq,

Gudja, Għaxaq, Żejtun and Żabbar ending in Fort St Angelo for the last pilgrim stamp in Malta. The ferry connection from Marsa to Pozzallo enables the pilgrims to continue the Cammino di San Giacomo from Caltagirone to Capizzi and traversing to Palermo, where another ferry will take them to Cagliari in Sardinia. In Sardinia, the pilgrims follow the Camminu Santu Jacu to Porto Torres, where another ferry will take pilgrims west to Barcelona. From Barcelona, the route proceeds on the Catalan Aragonés route until Logrōno. Here it connects with the Camin o Francés until Santiago de Compostela.

The Camino de Santiago is a collection of European pilgrim routes that finish in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. This tradition dates

back to the 9th century. It was declared one of the “three great pilgrimages of Christendom” by Pope Alexander VI in 1492.

Pilgrims carry a ‘pilgrim passport ’ (Credencial) which is stamped en-route. To qualify for a Compostela (certificate) one must walk at least 100km before reaching Santiago de Compostela. Pilgrims can complete the journey over multiple legs, spread across several years. They can also cycle, ride on horseback or sail the route.

The Camino Maltés is a fully-fledged official route. Those who start their walk in Malta and end in Santiago de Compostela will be entitled to a compostela. Why not join the 350,000 pilgrims that undertake this endeavour each year?

The Camino Maltés is a fully-fledged official route. Those who start their walk in Malta and end in Santiago de Compostela will be entitled to a compostela.

THE USE OF MEDICINAL PLANTS IN 17TH AND 18TH CENTURY MALTA

OF THE 1,200 SPECIES OF FLOWERING PLANTS THAT INCLUDE MALTESE ENDEMIC SPECIES, IT IS ESTIMATED THAT ABOUT 458 ARE MEDICINAL PLANTS OF WHICH 158 ARE MALTESE ENDEMIC ORIGIN. THIS PLACES MALTA AND GOZO IN A UNIQUE POSITION WHEN ONE CONSIDERS THAT THE GREEK HIPPOCRATES MENTIONED 250 MEDICINAL HERBS IN HIS HISTORICAL WORK.

The Physicians of the Order of St.John practiced medicine in accordance with Galenism, based on the theories of Claudius Galen, a Greek philosopher, physician and surgeon, cited in early manuscripts in the mid-1600’s. The indigenous Squill for example, was used as an expectorant and a diuretic by villagers and lay healers. The local clergy too had their favourite go-to healing plants and recipes and to ok Psalm 104 “God created herbs for the service of man” to a very interesting level. It is said that the nuns or friars of St Theresa in Cospicua could eliminate boils and abscesses with an ointment carefully prepared from local Mallow

leaves. Alternatives to Mallow were a Fennel and BellaDonna poultice or a compress made from Almond Oil and sugar which also seemed to do the trick.

Slaves known to possess healing skills were also consulted by locals, since going to a Physician of the Order of St John was most times an unaffordable experience for the Maltese. Treatments administered were not unlike the methods used by local village women and these comprised of hot baths infused with the recommended plant or herbs for the complaint. Patients would be left to relax and soak

in lavender, cypress, juniper, mint, rose oil, oregano, fennel, laurel leaves and wild thyme. Wild thyme was also used to treat a sore throat or bad breath or to alleviate skin conditions.

“Late 18th century Malta was a bizarre world. A whole crowd of lay healers treated patients for various diseases - swollen feet, ringworm, pterygium, warts, jaundice.” - Ciappara, 1978

The names of herbs, plants and other materia medica used by the Knights between the 1500’s and late 1700’s can be found in various historical documents held in the archives of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Mdina and the National Library in Valletta. Countless lists, pertaining to legal disputes, pharmaceutical stocks, pricing, indexing of herbal remedies that comprise of oils, ointments, syrups, conserves and powders derived from white roses, fennel, senna, vinegar, sugar, anis, borage, verbena and other local plants, are cited in books and papers referring to them for medicinal use.

Amongst the healing recipes commonly prepared for the sick by the Knights, were ‘Waters’, which ranged from simple ingredients to more complex preparations for the treatment of catarrh, Gout, dental problems, Calcium or Uric Acid stones, the Plague and Carbuncle boils. Other herbal and plant preparations were used to alleviate other problems; such as an olive oil based solution to rid your four-legged friend of an infestation of fleas, or a remedy prepared from Bitter Almonds, Peach Nuts and Cabbage Gravy/ Juice to stop you from getting drunk at a banquet “even if you drink many different types of wine and you eat a lot.”

In fact, Cumin, was amongst one of the many herbs and spice plants foraged for in the Maltese Islands and used for this purpose. The Spanish Broom, Calendula flowering plant, the Cynomorium (also known as the healing fungus found on the infamous Generals Rock in Gozo) and Bitter Almonds were also considered vital additives to coffee remedies.

With Autumn almost upon us, the seasonal rains that replenish the Maltese islands between September and May shall start to quench the dry countryside and gardens, bringing to life many of the incredible local Maltese flora which formed part of a pharmacist’s stock during the 17th and 18th Century. However, before you put on your trekking shoes and wander off to forage for Maltese flora, it is important to note that many of the herbs, wildflowers, plants and trees are strictly protected by law and several species are also crucial for the survival of the local fauna and especially the Maltese honeybee (Apis mellifera ruttneri ), endemic to the Maltese Islands and a subspecies of the Western honey bee.

You can still enjoy seeing some examples of Maltese and Mediterranean plants, besides other non-native species, by visiting the Argotti Botanical Garden in Floriana.

“ The 2023/24 season aims to be more appealing to the general community showcasing a wide array of events about highly-topical subjects, while always having artistic excellence and communal inclusivity at its core. Amongst the projects planned for the first part of the programme, we have the collective exhibition the wind blows…waves in all directions in collaboration with EuroPride 2023, a theatre adaptation of Ġorġ Mallia's book Mitt Ruħ , a retrospective

of Ingmar Bergman's most acclaimed films, a live music concert by Cher Camilleri, and the return of last year's exuberant drag show Kwijns ! with a new script that is sure to amuse and entertain in equal measure all those in attendance.”

WHAT’S YOUR TYPE?

IT FEELS LIKE CHEATING, WRITING AN INTERVIEW ABOUT A DEAR FRIEND’S PROJECT YOU’RE JUST AS ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT. WELL, MAYBE NOT QUITE AS MUCH AS HE IS. MATTHEW DEMARCO HAS BEEN AT IT FOR OVER TEN YEARS

Design college in the late noughties was an exciting time. It was the start of social media and suddenly, like-minded artists from all over the world were brought together in a way like never before; something that hugely influenced Demarco’s view on branding and its local manifestations.

Signage and Maltese typography had not really been studied locally, and he wanted to change that. Demarco started off Maltatype as a Tumblr page to document and celebrate local street branding and it ended up having an international following, inspiring many others all over the world to start their own insertcountry-here-type projects.

Luckily for us, this project preceded a difficult time for a lot of the old shop signs around Valletta and Malta. A few years later, the city would be announced as the Capital of Culture for 2018 and this would drive what was a slow gentrification into a full frenzy. As exciting as it was to witness Valletta coming back to life again, a lack of awareness and enforcement during this revitalisation meant that several of the most iconic and historic signs were lost forever. Some were destroyed and some, mercifully, ended up in private collections.

“That’s a problem too, though”, Demarco tells me. “Because in an ideal world, we’d be able to enjoy them as part of the visual vernacular of the city, as they were meant to be.” He tells me about one of the most spectacular shopfronts in Valletta, sadly gone before his time. It had graced Republic Street in the capital when it was better-known as Kingsway, a spot that now hosts a fast-food outlet. “It was known by the Beltin ( Valletta residents) as Dimitri’s, after the owner, who had a large sign that read ‘D. Buhagiar’, alongside lots of other smaller reverse-gilded glass signs

advertising all of his wares.” His pastizzi were legendary, a fate similar to that of his beautiful signage. Residents have confided in Demarco about how they saw the signs being destroyed during the renovation, though he secretly holds onto a sliver of hope that they somehow survived and might be resting in a dark corner of someone’s garage, waiting to decorate our streets again someday.

“Maltaty pe i sn’t there to turn Valletta into a museum. The city thrives when it is lived in and busy, so it’s not about freezing everything, but rather about using the past to inspire the future.” He takes me down to lower Republic Street where a stunning example of a foil-backed glass sign hangs in a new outfit. Xmun Borg used to be a confectioner and is now the Michelin-starred Noni. “I may be biased, having handled the branding, but Archi+ were the driving force behi nd the exceptional evolution of this signage that respects the past whilst still advertising the current establishment.” The old sign hangs behind an industrial-looking sheet of safety glass on which the Noni branding is delicately etched in white. It’s a skilful dance between past and present where they work in symbiosis; a conservation success story.

The awareness of these priceless works of art has grown and the local community are certainly more knowledgeable of the intangible value they bring to our streetscapes. “In an ideal world we’d be able to look back in fifty years’ time and not only appreciate what was created in the 20th Century, but also what was being created in 2023. That our newly-crafted signs would sit alongside those that came before them, respectfully adding to the evolving vernacular, rather than replacing it. We have a duty to create something that represents contemporary design, with a part to play in the story of branding in Malta.”

BUILDING BRIDGES FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

This fort is one of the best preserved in Malta having retained most of its original features, not least its unique Armstrong 100-ton gun – the world’s largest cannon ever built. It is very popular with locals and foreign visitors, drawing thousands annually. One of its standout features is the Guthrie Bridge, a mechanically operated bridge which was drawn inside the fort with the help of two hinged cantilever arms that supported it thus isolating the fort for better defence in case of an attack. It could take loads of up to three tons. This bridge commonly equipped British forts all over the former empire and remained in use until the 1920s when it was considered not suitable to support the weight of the newly introduced motor transport and was removed. Now thanks to the combined efforts of the Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna (FWA) NGO and the Eden Leisure Group, this bridge has now been reconstructed using some of its original parts after a laborious three-year project.

When dismantled in the 1920s, it was replaced by a filledin causeway bridging the width of the ditch. This utilitarian structure was eventually removed to allow the reconstruction of the present Guthrie Bridge. Restoring the bridge was most challenging also because very little was found published about

how it originally worked. There are today no complete working examples of this bridge anywhere in the world except the one at Fort Rinella which has been restored. This bridge was designed by Charles T Guthrie in 1869. It was pulled inside the fort by six men using a block and tackle while its roadway was balanced on two hinged lifting arms powered by gravity.

The restoration of this bridge involved conservation and repair of various original parts of the bridge that were salvaged directly from the fort or from other similar forts in Malta, and the reconstruction of its missing parts using the same methods of construction and materials. It formed part of FWA's broader effort to restore Fort Rinella and towards which Eden Leisure Group generously funded the €60,000 project.

Prior to the commencement of the project a lot of historic and scientific research was conducted both in Malta and abroad. In all this, instructions on its operation found in the Malta Garrison Standing Orders of 1897 were fundamental in cracking the hitherto obscure method employed in the bridge’s operation. A scientific model was also created to test its operation. The restoration initiative began in 2019, with Mario Farrugia from

FWA and Ian De Cesare, Chairman of the Eden Leisure Group, describing the intricacies of the project at its launch event. Farrugia emphasized that the aim wasn't just to replicate the original bridge but to make it functional again, providing visitors with an immersive experience.

This marks the second major heritage restoration project by the Eden Leisure Group, following the restoration of the 18th Century Organ at Our Lady of Victories church in Valletta. Through the Eden Leisure Foundation, established in memory of Cettina and Maurice De Cesare, the group expresses its

commitment to preserving culture and heritage while giving back to the community.

As the Guthrie Bridge stands once more, it bridges the past and the present, embodying both corporate goodwill and heritage preservation. It's a testament to the power of collaboration and the importance of maintaining historical treasures for future generations to appreciate.

The classic steak tartare is a delectable starter or an ideal light summer main, always to be served chilled. Simple to prepare and will surely tantalise the taste buds of your guests. This no cook dish, with some careful planning, can be ready within minutes making it a great option for summer entertaining.

STEAK TARTARE

INGREDIENTS

High quality, premium fresh beef fillet

1 small shallot, finely diced

1 tsp capers

1 tsp English or Dijon mustard

Worcestershire sauce

1 egg yolk or quail egg yolk/s

Season to taste, salt and pepper

METHOD

To simplify this dish, you can mix and prepare your ingredients from before to have them ready, whilst always keeping your beef chilled and prepared last minute before serving.

Per single serving, add into a mixing bowl, the chopped capers, the shallot, a teaspoon of your preferred mustard English or Dijon, 1/2 teaspoon each of salt and cracked black pepper, combined with 2 dashes of Worcestershire sauce, and slowly combine ingredients. This can be returned to the fridge to be used later.

When ready to serve, prepare the premium fresh beef fillet per serving and trim any fat and proceed to chop very finely by hand or alternatively you can mince it with a blender.

Simply add the above mixture to the beef by folding it slowly with two forks to blend flavours and achieve a well-mixed and even consistency for the palette.

You can plate each portion into a neat mound and add an egg yolk on top for the classic definition of the dish or as a refined alternative you can use smaller quail egg yolks for a more chic aesthetic.

Serve immediately with simple potato chips, toasted crostini or your favourite crackers and finish the dish with some dollops of truffle mayo and micro cress for added colour and depth of flavours.

TURNING IT UP - THE SHE WORD IS GROWING

September 2022 saw the launch of a new format podcast for women. The strap line for the show ‘Conversations Women Rarely Have But Really Should ’ perfectly summarises the concept. The concept creator and host Trudy Kerr joins three women around a table discussing openly and honestly the issues that really matter to us but that often get brushed aside, such as menopause, relationships and intimacy, mental health, body image, relationship trauma, the workplace, and so much more.

As The SHE Word heads into its second year and third season the formula has proven itself to be what women really want; inspiring honesty. Lets face it, as women we don’t always need the answer, sometimes we just need reassurance that we aren’t alone. With over 1.8 million collective views, over 110,000 views on YouTube and rated in the top 10% of Spotify podcasts in the world, and a growing audience across all online platforms the simple show format has touched women all over the world. The SHE Word has extended to a show specifically for Younger Women hosted by Journalist Sasha Vella, and in the coming months will extend to additional new audiences.

The show has also launched its Patreon Page, which this coming season will see exclusive content, bloopers, early access to shows, and partners deals exclusive to the Patreons, but also donates half of its profits to the Richmond Foundation - to assist those women seeking therapy or guidance who cannot afford it because positive health is a priority for The SHE Word.

Mental health conditions are increasing worldwide. Mainly because of demographic changes, there has been a 13% rise in mental health conditions and substance use disorders in the last 6 years. Mental health conditions can have a substantial effect on all areas of life, such as school or work performance, relationships with family and friends and ability to participate in the community. And even though for most of us, COVID is behind us, the ‘shadow pandemic’ of domestic abuse is still on the increase.

These issues are affect all women, of all ages, every nationality and orientation - the challenges that face women do not discriminate, and we at The SHE Word will continue to bring women together, to unite, celebrate each other as we talk honestly and openly - to dissolve the stigma and empower women everywhere.

R: “ We enjoy the many events and parties on the events calendar aimed at the community. Apart from the regular nights on offer in Malta; there are plenty of small and themed events to look forward to.”

S: “Other events include the many meetups organised by Allied Rainbow Communities (ARC), which are well-attended and provide a safe environment for all.”

R: “There are also a number of LGBTIQ+ go-to spots such as cafés owned by members of the community.”

ON WHETHER THEY FACE ANY ISSUES IN THEIR DAILY LIVES

R/S: “Gladly, no. Of course, there are always one-offs. However, we do feel very protected by the Maltese law – where hate speech and cyber bullying are not tolerated and are illegal. If it does occur, we know that once reported, corrective action is taken immediately by the law makers.”

ON THE BEST THING FOR THE COMMUNITY ABOUT MALTA

R: “In Malta, it is generally safe to be yourself, aside from the few derogatory slurs here and there, which we’ve grown to ignore. The recently introduced laws recognising Civil Union, gay marriage, the possibility to change gender or have no assigned gender, as well being the first EU country to make conversion therapy illegal, are all initiatives the community welcomes, as they contribute to a country-wide culture of tolerance and acceptance.”

S: “The fact that we have seen an influx of immigrants and other minority groups moving to Malta has also contributed to a more accepting and open attitude in general.”

ON THEIR EXPERIENCE AS CABIN CREW FOR AIR MALTA

R: “Air Malta has a long history - and although born from a time when Malta was a much more conservative place, the company has always had a very inclusive approach.”

S: “Management has been very supportive, and we were accepted immediately by all. The cabin crew are of mixed ages and come from different backgrounds, with some having strong religious beliefs, however respect supersedes everything, and there has never been any tension.”

R/S: “Our colleagues are aware that we are an item, and we have always felt welcome and that we can speak openly about our relationship.”

ON EUROPRIDE 2023 HAPPENING IN MALTA

R: “I am very proud that Malta gets to host EuroPride as we’ve come a long way in just a few years. Malta Pride was only a small march attended by a few people in the past and it is now a massive event featuring local and international renowned artists, attended by huge crowds of people from the community along with their families and allies. Being half Gozitan, I am also looking forward to the celebrations happening in Gozo. It was only last year that Pride started to be celebrated there so it’s exciting to see the Gozitan community also coming together in celebration of the LGBTIQ+ community.”

S: “EuroPride being hosted in Malta means recognition that our country is doing well and can be of an example to other countries when it comes to the LGBTIQ+ community’s rights. It’s very exciting to see Malta Pride turn into such a huge and vast series of events, showcasing our local talent through many different artforms, so there is something for everyone. I think it’s also very important that there are a number of educational events happening to educate the community itself, as well as people outside of the community to raise awareness and promote acceptance.”

COMO TO MALTA SEAPLANES RALLY: ROBERTS CUP

October sees the return of the annual Como to Malta Seaplanes Rally – Roberts Cup, now in its sixth edition. Leaving Como on 5 October the amphibian seaplanes must make a route of their choice down all the length of Italy and across the Mediterranean to Malta, where they are expected to grace the Grand Harbour on 7-8 October. As always, all eyes will be on the weather, which has a tendency for mischief at this time of the year. All successful participants will receive a beautiful medal commissioned by the Central Bank of Malta and minted at the Royal Dutch Mint,

with a reception for VIP guests being generously catered for by Villa Arrigo. The Malta Seaplanes Association VO/1222, which organises this event in collaboration with the prestigious Aero Club Como, believes that a community flying club in the port area of Marsa can help regenerate the area and bring people together in a thriving new environment. IN EUROPRIDE CELEBRATING MALTA'S JOURNEY OVER THE PAST DECADE

Malta's LGBTIQ+ community is a buzz with excitement over this month's EuroPride Valletta festival. So are the country's supportive politicians.

After ten years effecting changes for the better, il-Gvern ta' Malta is as excited as everyone else in anticipation of this month's EuroPride Valletta festival. Huge movements forward in government legislation made over the past decade have greatly improved life for Malta's LGBTIQ+ citizens and residents, to the point that 'being in the band' is no longer something to hide but instead to be celebrated.

The Honourable Rebecca Buttigieg is the Parliamentary Secretary of Reforms and Equality and has dedicated herself tirelessly to the role she assumed upon election to office in 2022, continuing the innovative platform of a Labour government that came to power in 2013. Ushering in the many groundbreaking policies that have moved Malta from a country with little legal protection or recognition of LG BTIQ+ rights to one of Europe's, and the world's, leaders in this regard. Malta has been ranked Number 1 on the ILGAEurope Rainbow Index for the past eight years, not only matching but surpassing its fellow European Union members in ensuring quality of life is optimal for all the country's citizens. As Ms. Buttigieg states, “Malta was a very conservative country. EuroPride serves to commemorate the journey over the past decade and celebrate the leap forward made in LGBTIQ+ rights in Malta.”

It is not only the LGBTIQ+ community itself that gains when progressive government policies are put into place. The entire population benefits from a more cohesive society wherein all people are respected and such personal issues as sexuality and gender identity become irrelevant—in a good way. The obvious success of social integration has engendered strong support for the incumbent government, whose national five-year plan has already implemented further legislation to fight hate speech and disinformation.

EuroPride will see events taking place not only on Malta but al so on Gozo, where a parade and concert will highlight the presence and value of the LGBTIQ+ community on an island with a thriving arts community. Indeed, Gozo has attracted people with alternative lifestyles for decades and today there is much official support for domestic and international participants in the local arts scene.

In an era when openly LGBTIQ+ Maltese citizens hold public office in both t he national and European parliaments, “it is important that LGBTIQ+ people are seen in these positions,” says Ms Buttigieg, who reit erates that “sexuality is not an issue.” She is very proud of the government's policies regarding adoptions by gay couples in 2014 and equality of marriage enacted in 2017. That there is even a Parliamentary Secretary of Reforms and Equality within the Home Affairs Ministry is quite impressive, although perhaps one day when the world is more advanced it will no longer be remarkable but rather standard.

Alcohol consumed at high altitude can have a stronger effect than usual. Cabin crew are legally empowered to refuse to serve any alcohol to an intoxicated passenger and anyone under the age of 18. In extreme cases, crew may also temporarily confiscate the passenger‘s own drinks so that the passenger does not become a nuisance to the other passengers and crew. Furthermore, Air Malta is bound by international regulations which prohibit the embarkation or the carriage of drunken passengers. However, since you are reading this article, Air Malta‘s Flight Safety Committee is confident that you are a law-abiding and exemplary passenger. Indeed, the cabin crew may need your assistance to restrain another passenger in the unlikely event that he or she may act irresponsibly during the flight. The consumption of one’s own alcoholic beverages in-flight goes against Air Malta policy.

SMOKING

Smoking is prohibited from when you leave the departure terminal building until you reach the arrival terminal building. Smoking is allowed in designated areas only. Smoking is not allowed during any phase of the flight and in any area of the aircraft. Should you be aware of a passenger who has smoked in the toilet during the flight, please inform the cabin crew immediately so that they can check for any undetected fires. The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) is not allowed on board Air Malta flights. Similarly, the use of naked flames on and around the aircraft is also prohibited.

T RANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)

Devices that can send or receive data by wireless means, such as mobile phones and tablets, may be used during all phases of the flight provided the device has 'Flight Mode' capability and that this is enabled. If the data transmission capability cannot be switched off (whilst the device is operating), the device itself must be switched off completely for the duration of the flight. Bluetooth wireless connectivity is allowed. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Accessories, such as headphones, must not obstruct access to the aisle. The use of Wi-Fi with Flight Mode enabled is permitted on some of our aircraft that are equipped with an in-flight entertainment system. The Cabin Crew will make an announcement on aircraft that are so equipped, to inform you when Wi-Fi can be enabled on your PEDs.

NON-TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)

These could include, but are not limited to, items such as DVD players, electronic games, music players and personal cameras. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices shall be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing.

ARE THERE TIMES WHEN I CANNOT USE MY ELECTRONIC DEVICES?

Under certain circumstances, your Flight Crew or Cabin Crew may ask you to switch off all Personal Electronic Devices. This may happen during automatic landings, low visibility takeoff or landing, or during emergency situations.

I SHOULD INFORM THE CABIN CREW WHEN …

Your portable electronic device is damaged, becomes hot, produces smoke, is lost, or falls into the seat structure. If safe to do so, the device must be switched off immediately.

LAPTOPS AND NOTEBOOKS

Larger devices (e.g. laptops) may be used during boarding and during the flight, however they must be switched off and stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing since they could hinder an emergency evacuation. 'Flight Mode' must be enabled. Use of Bluetooth connectivity is allowed. Use of Wi-Fi under Flight Mode is allowed on some aircraft which are equipped with an inflight entertainment system.

CAN I USE HEADPHONES?

Personal headphones can be used during all phases of the flight. However, we ask you to remove your headphones during the safety briefing. For safety reasons, customers sitting in an emergency exit row must refrain from using headphones during taxi, take-off and landing.
