concept Libraries [and art centers] are essential to the functioning of a democratic society…libraries are the great symbol of the freedom mind. – Franklin D. Roosevelt Libraries and art centers constitute and represent the foundation of democracy. The presentation of information to the masses ensures the freedom to read, to view, to speak, and the practice which invites discourse.

Therefore, my design was centered on the maximizing of discourse through the creation (or providing) of public domains.

competition posters: saltlakecity live-grow: self-sufficient living
WHY are home and business occupants so negligent with their water and energy usage? Drinkable water is being wasted for lawn irrigation, flushing toilets, and for landscaping and mass amounts of energy are being consumed to purify and manage waste water. This design reduces the inappropriate use of drinkable water through integrated site design and water efficiency to minimize water usage. Located within a brownfield site along the Surplus Canal (fed by rivers, canals, stormwater, and snow runoff that drains into a dead sea – the Great Salt Lake) in Salt Lake City, Utah, this sustainable community with refugee housing and low/middle income families approaches design to not only house but also feed and employ the building occupants as well. Residents promote healthy landscapes through rainwater gardens, grey water reuse, biofiltration ponds, and blackwater subsurface wetland systems. In addition to using water-wise systems, the residents learn to become self-sufficient in food production through four types of gardens as their skill sets develop. Each tier of gardening educates the residents to become professional agriculturalists.
Each home provides a sense of visual continuity yet defines personal space. This is achieved through prefabricated, modular design. This allows for flexibility in design and site location yet maintains a feeling of equality and democracy since no home is larger than another. Each home is equipped with innovative passive designs to reduce energy and water use, making them more resilient to shifts in availability of water, energy, and climate change.

Currently our society has a tear down, throwaway, and rebuilt mentality. Even with proper motives, such as replacing an old dilapidated building with a new green building or renovating existing structures, so much construction waste is being sent to our landfills. What if we could salvage every piece of a building before it is demolished?

What impact could this method of construction have on our environment, society, and our idea of what architecture and recycling is and can become. The purpose of this design is to provide a facility that not only recycles materials but is also made of recycled material.

Kings Peak stands taller than any other summit in Utah, and gets inundated with climbers during July and August. This shelter provides shelter for stranded hikers and provides elegant views from the top of King’s Peak.
