PROVIDING A HOPE FOR A BETTER LIFE THROUGH MATERIAL REUSE Material reuse can have a deep psychological and emotional response. Haitians, through these systems, will remember the legacy of those who passed on, still live, and who have donated time, money, and resources to help out our fellow man. Three systems of prefabricated parts will be utilized: 1. Pallet Housing Currently shipments of food and supplies are being sent to Haiti. The pallets on which the materials are being shipped can act as temporary or long-term single family housing structures or as chicken coups, which are very common in Haiti. Scrap metal may be applied to create weatherproofing for the structures. Pallets and current wood debris can also be cut apart to create cladding for new structures. 2. Earth Bag Housing A simple system of reusing rice or burlap bags. Earth is poured into the bags along with adobe or concrete admixtures to create brick-like structures. Barb-wire is then placed between each stack to prevent shifting. After the bags are stacked adobe or stucco can be applied for extra strength and aesthetics. 3. Rubble Gabion Structures Using our preexisting knowledge of gabion structures, rubble from the earthquake can be collected to build walls for housing and to create ripraps for shorelines, roads, or hillsides. The pallets symbolize the help and aid received from others. The earth reminds us of those who have returned to Mother Earths care. The rubble keeps our thoughts on the past but gives hope for a better future.
