It’s not easy dealing with the few remaining women on the NRC, but with our helpful tips, our charter-drafting heroes should sail through International Women’s Day (a slightly emotional time for womenfolk), on Mar 8, with no problem at all. 1. If you’ve hired your wife as your personal assistant, which is totally legal and fine by us (57 of you have done it), make sure you get her to tell herself to buy some flowers for herself. 2. When women mention adding gender equality to the charter, show your support by putting your best man on the job to draft the best possible bill.

3. Leave a copy of 50 Shades of Grey on your desk. It could start an interesting conversation with your female staff. A playful wink and a little tap on the buttocks will show them that “you get it.” 4. Show you’re genuinely crushed about Ticha Na Nakorn resigning: “It was a pretty irrational and sudden decision, but it’s hard for us men to understand what PMS can do to the human mind.” 5. Make positive suggestions about areas where women need to play a greater role in politics: “I believe women know best when it comes to children. Or at least infants.”

6. Lobby for the creation of new panels where women’s skills can be better utilized, like a Deputy Minister of Fashion, a Secretary of State of Emotions, or even a Health Commissioner of Dieting and Aerobics. 7. Be tough on safety. It’s a sick world out there and you’re not going to let psychos get away with preying on defenseless women. Offer helpful tips like staying home after 9pm, or wearing several layers of clothes in public. 8. Make sure you kiss your female staff and wish them a very happy Women’s Day. Little things like that can go a long way. Also: chocolates.

upfront HOT OR NOT

Hot: Affordable luxury cinemas

Not: Unaffordable beer

Isn’t beer meant to be a working man’s drink? Some of these latest brews cost more than boutique wines and come in smaller bottles. So this weekend, instead of hanging out at the craft beer bars, we’ll be eating popcorn in the air-conditioned comfort of a luxury cinema. Thanks to the new one at the Emporium, we can actually afford to (see page 12).

STREET TALK

Hot: Boat parties

Not: Pool parties

We don’t want to see you with your clothes off (nor you us). And if we did, we’d be this guy (see page 6). As such, we’d rather get our fix of waterside partying by hopping on board the Duck & Noodle party boat or heading to the upcoming Great Outdoor Market with its rickety floating bar. (See BK Now, page 30)

Hot: Boozy milkshakes Not: Cocktails with bacon We’re still reeling from the realization that not everything’s better with bacon. Thankfully, after that little failed experiment, bartenders across town are now turning their attention to ice-cream, spiking their frosty shakes with everything from Malibu to chili-infused liqueur (see Blends, page 20).

A 21-year-old money boy

Not far from one of Bangkok’s busiest nightlife districts is a shadowy boulevard frequented by swathes of what are colloquially referred to as “money boys.” Tee, 21, stands among them. For over a year, he has been offering his sexual services to a steady, late-night clientele. BK chats with him to gain an insight into this illegal means of livelihood. Why did you choose this job?

How often do you work?

How much do you get paid?

Actually my friend at university introduced me to it. As I’m from upcountry, living alone here, I have to pay for my tuition, my bills, as well as my dorm’s rent all by myself. So I decided to give it a try. He persuaded me it’s lucrative and so it turned out to be.

It depends. I work 3-4 days a week and basically I get hailed 3-4 times a night. I work from 9pm till around 2am. Weekends are the busiest. I once got picked up eight times a night—my record. But rainy season is the worst.

The price strictly starts at B500 per encounter. Everyone around here offers the same rate. There are special prices for certain sexual fetishes, like orgies. More often than not, I make around B40,000 to B50,000 a month.

How do money boys work?

What services do you offer?

You stand by the streets. People from all walks of life—whether it’s businessmen or even students—will drive or walk up to greet you. We lead them to a cheap motel nearby. They pay you. When things are done, they sometimes drop you off at exactly the same spot or they pay you a tad more to travel back yourself.

I offer just about anything they want, which sometimes doesn’t even go as far as sexual intercourse. The most common request is masturbation. My customers are just about anyone, from 20 - 50 years of age. I sometimes get waved down by girls, too. I tell them I can’t have penetrative sex with them, but surprisingly some are still satisfied with just some touching. Oh, police are my customers, too. And I always use a condom.

What is the most dangerous thing you’ve ever experienced? I once got charged by the police for night-time loitering. Thieves are commonplace here, too. Do you plan to keep doing this after graduation? No. It’s not a permanent kind of job. Once you reach your early 30s, you’re done. There are new faces here almost every week. The youngest I’ve ever met is 14 years old. I dream of being a hotel receptionist. That’s what I’m studying towards right now. Interview by Tewit Phanitprachaya

Hot: Summer

Not: Al fresco dining

The summer collections are here (see page 14) and so is the crushing heat. The elusive cool breeze you may have enjoyed for the past few months at Never Ending Summer, Salt (on that topic, see page 25) or Wanderlust’s rooftop, is rapidly turning into a sticky, humid and oppressive vapor. Zuma and Vogue Lounge do have outdoor air-conditioning, but we’d never encourage that kind of environmental recklessness, would we now.

When she’s not fawning over the pictures in Kinfolk, she’s updating the look-book for her new indigo tie-dye Facebook business—with images shot on her Canon 70D and filtered to look like film. She charges B1,000 for each shirt and puts the profits into a very noble cause: stage dressing for the latest gig by a Scandinavian indie two-piece no one’s heard of. Except her. And her friends. Hence why they’re the only ones in the audience.

Studio Lam

the charmingly rustic shop on Soi 31 is the perfect place for her and her friends to hang out and post Instagram pics—which has earned her over 5,000 followers. They’re nothing to do with her sexy selfies. It’s all about the food. Really. When she dines out, it’s wagyu beef and otoro or nothing, which she can lecture you on while compulsively swirling her wine.

The Expat Party Creep After taking style cues from the latest Apple keynote presentation—jeans, loafers, untucked dress shirt—he heads to the cool, underground establishment only he knows about: Maggie Choo’s (where he still thinks the girls on the swings genuinely find his jokes funny). After that it’s straight to Ku De Ta for a night of chatting up women 15 years his junior with stories about how he personally knows the Bangkok Invaders. But none of this seems to help much, since come 1am he’ll be found in Mixx, prowling the dance-floor looking for a takeaway.

The Reborn Buddhist The short hair lets you know she’s humble, while the outrageous, flashy glasses let you know she’s rich. And that ringing you can hear; that’s her phone telling her to be mindful of others. It does that every 15 minutes. No bad thing when it lets you escape another conversation about meditation retreats in Khon Kaen, Yao Noi and Doi Suthep. All this time out has taught her to hate all forms of violence and rhetoric—but she’ll still fanatically attack anyone with different views from her own.

The Blogging Traveler You know she travels beyond Hua Hin because she wears hiking boots even in Bangkok. And carries a selfie stick. You can read about these adventures in her BK interview, where she bravely describes a cross-continent journey “sponsored” by her mom and posted every step of the way on Pantip. Even photos of empty planes and Thai Airways lunch trays.

“Peru is so hot right now.”

The Social Entrepreneur This guy has a plan. And it’s to save the world using your money. That’s why he’s rented a permanent desk in a co-working space and employed a few dozen children in Mae Sot to make stuff for him. These saved labor costs will help build the business, which is good for everyone. Mainly him, though, since he really, really needs a new condo. One that’s bigger. CHIANG MAI

Jungle Juice Drive out of town and you’ll find some of Chiang Mai’s most creative coffee shops. By Tewit Phanitprachaya and Nareerat Yoddamnern

Sepsilp Glin Kafe Bannok

The Giant

This lengthily-named café and art gallery caused a stir when it opened thanks to seating that allows you to dip your toes in water while you enjoy a cup of coffee (all under B100). Don’t expect full service; they just focus on making the coffee and let customers pour it themselves, but that doesn’t stop people flocking here nearly every day. The owner, Neng, is well known in Chiang Mai coffee roasting circles for his brand, Bannok, which uses a mix of Pang Khon coffee from Chiang Rai and Doi Saket coffee from Chiang Mai. Dotted around the front yard are vintage cars as well as stacks of old televisions and haystacks. They also serve beer and food, mainly Thai classics like fried rice and yum woon sen (spicy vermicelli salad).

The quaint village of Pok in Mae On district is home to this stunning tree-house coffee shop-cum-resort in the middle of the jungle. It looks like something out of a children’s tale, with seating for 20 nestled in a gargantuan banyan tree (advance booking is a must). The café offers an extensive menu of coffee (iced B120, hot B85) brewed with locally farmed beans, as well as finger foods like sausage pizza (B199), shrimp-stuffed spring rolls (B85) and Chinese-style steamed shrimp dumplings (B85). There’s also a five-room boutique hotel on the same plot, with rooms from B3,500-B5,000 per night. Note that there’s no mobile signal in the area, but they do have Wi-Fi on request.

Lhong Pa

Situated along the Mae Sai River, this café boasts a personal cascade foot spa for you to make the most of the tranquil surroundings and home-cooked food. The owner highly recommends the kao si klong moo obb (slow-cooked pork ribs with rice, B89) and moo sam chan tod jim jeaw (deep-fried pork belly with spicy Isaan-style dipping sauce, B69). The selection of coffee (B60) is sourced from Chiang Rai.

Nestled in the forest, Lhong Pa is a gallery-turned-restaurant situated on one rai of beautiful land in Mae Rim district. Formerly a gallery, the homey, air-conditioned indoors is decorated with eye-catching artwork and hipster knickknacks, while there’s also an open-air seating area under a translucent roof. Food covers classic pasta dishes like spaghetti carbonara (B120) as well as some exotic hybrids like spaghetti nam prik ong (Northern-style tomato paste with minced pork, B105). What’s more, there’s a wide drinks selection, from typical iced coffee (B75) and iced green tea (B60) to a variety of fruit-infused soda (from B60). They are always packed at the weekend so head there early.

Like Sepsilp, it also offers over-water seating, allowing you to chillout barefoot above the Ta Chang River. ESCAPE ROUTES By BK Staff

SARABURI

Grape Escape It’s Khao Yai vineyard harvest season, and Charn Issara Estates (71 Moo 8 Nikhom 3 Rd., Muek Lek, 02-235-2358, www.charnissaraestates.com), a commercial property that has its own vineyard in Muak Lek district, near Khao Yai, will host their second harvest on Mar 21. The estate has been bottling Shiraz (red) and Chenin Blanc (white) since 2014 and during harvest season offers grape picking and traditional grape stomping, along with parties with live music and wine tasting. There’s currently a special rate on 2-4 bedroom pool residences at Charn Issara Resort starting from B2,000 per night, including breakfast. The estate plans to produce Cabernet Sauvignon soon, too.

VIETNAM

Sapa, So Good The charming mountain town of Sapa, in Northwest Vietnam, has been on tourists’ radars for a few years now thanks to its misty morning views of cascading rice terraces and interesting blend of cultures. The latest reason to visit is the newly opened U Sapa (8, Cau May, Sapa Town, +84-203-871996, www.uhotelsresorts.com/usapa), a 57-room property set in a French colonial building in the middle of the city. It’s currently offering a 25-percent discount on rates, which start at US$53 (B1,700) per night from now through Oct 31. The U Straightaway to Sapa package also gets you round-trip shuttle bus tickets between Hanoi and Sapa at $US103 (B3,300) for one night’s stay.

SRI LANKA

Yogi’s Retreat Situated in Tangalle, in Sri Lanka’s South, the five-suite Maya Villa offers an off-track yoga retreat where you can hold your poses while overlooking paddy fields, frangipanis and fruit trees. The new 10-day ashtanga yoga retreat starts at US$1,670 (B54,300) per person and covers accommodation for 12 nights, 10 days of yoga and three vegetarian meals a day, plus use of the villa’s facilities (like its 20-meter L-shaped swimming pool). The next retreats are set to take place from May 1-13 and May 15-27. There’s only room for 10 participants in each so you know you’ll get plenty of personalized attention. For the less hardcore yogis, there’s also a six-night offering.

PATTAYA

Center Court It may not be beside the beach, but the new Courtyard by Marriott South Pattaya (goo.gl/FY6Q7n, 038-418-333) is handily located close to Pattaya’s clubbing district and main walking street. The hotel offers 132 contemporary rooms priced from B2,400-4,400, including breakfast. There’s also a 24-hour gym and massage center on-site.

City of Music The annual Pattaya International Music Festival returns on Mar 20-22. From 6pm-1am daily, Thai and international musicians will take to a number of stages set up across the city, from Dolphin Circle in the North to Bali Hai Pier in the South. The lineup includes Sweet Mullet, 25hours, Retrospect, Richman Toy and popular reggae bands such as Samai Niyom, TA-MONE, Deep O Sea and Gold Red. Designer Digs Don’t confuse the new Fab Cafe on Ari Soi 1 with the popular Fabb Cafe in Chiang Mai. This creative/design-focused space originated in Japan and has another three branches in Taipei and Spain, all of which offer different design services to their visitors. In Bangkok, Fab Cafe takes the form of a co-working space with product design facilities. The cafe offers 3D printing and 2D laser cutting machines along with instructors to help you out. The cafe also plans to host regular workshops like last month’s pinhole camera-making and build-your-own radio tutorials. Check their Facebook for updates. 77/1 Ari Soi 1, 083-6199983. The lightweight headphones hook around the ear with bendable sections for a comfortable, secure fit while playing sports. Other features include six-hour battery life, water resistance, 30-foot Bluetooth control, built-in remote and hands-free mic. They don’t even sound too bass-y, a common accusation leveled at Beats headphones. This season, we see all the style guides leaning towards crop tops and A-skirts. It’s easy to play around by mixing them with other plain items as well—it’s not all about prints. Bold colored blazers and jackets need to be matched with bottoms of the same color.

Like everything 60s, bell bottoms are finally back this year. Go for both bell-bottom and boot-cut jeans in light blue for the safest results. Other fabrics in deep blue make a good choice too, just don’t play around too much with glittery details and stay away from black if you want them to last longer than a season.

Like most old-town areas in Bangkok, the residents of Lan Luang have been there basically forever, having inherited their shop-houses from their families. Residents tend to be older here, though Thammasat University students enrolled at the Pra-Chan Pier campus are a common sight. Tourists on their way to Khao San can also be found quite regularly.

There’s plenty of good street food around here, like Pad Thai Thip Samai, also known as 9 Pad Thai Pa Tu Phee (02-2216280). However, if you’re looking for something a little classier, the crew behind much-loved drinking and dining spot 10 Seven Spoons (Chakkaphatdipong Rd., 02-629-9214) have

While traffic conditions during the day are relatively mild, they can slow to a painful crawl at night, especially on weekends when people flock to Khao San. There are also no nearby BTS or MRT stations, so taxis are the transport of choice to get to and from the area. Walkers shouldn’t have much of a problem, as the pavements are generally wide and uncluttered.

W

The area’s old buildings are charming to some, run-down to others. That said, the footpaths are quite spacious and well-maintained, and the streets are laid out in a manner that’s inviting for walking. The area also houses a great many museums, such as the 3 King Prajadhipok Museum (Lan Luang Rd., 02-280-3413), 4 Nithas Rattanakosin Museum (Ratchadamnoen Nok Rd., 02-621-0044) and the 5 Varadis Palace Museum (Lan Luang Rd., 02-282-9110). Cultural sites like 6 Sunthorn Thammatarn Temple (Soi Lan Luang 1, 02-629-9089), 7 Ratchadamnoen Stadium (Ratchadamnoen Nok Rd., 02-281-4205) and the 8 Nang Lerng Horse Tracks (Phitsanulok Rd.) are also big tourist attractions.

Cocktails start at a little over B250 each. The same people are also behind the tiny, tiki-themed bar 11 Mad Moa (Chakkaphatdipong Rd., 085-155-2601), home to a delicious wagyu burger (B240), and underground craft beers, as well as 12 Pollen Baked Goods (Chakkaphatdipong Rd., 087-040-5736), which does a great assortment of French country-style pastries. Another hot neighborhood haunt is 13 White Line (Thammanoon-Withi Rd., 081-540-6057), which serves up sophisticated bar food and awesome music.

Lan Luang and its surrounding areas are filled with old shop-houses and government buildings—most of which have been there since early in Bangkok’s conception—leaving little space for newer residential apartments or condos. While there are some apartments for rent, most are quite rundown and a little shady-looking. We recommend checking out 1 Baan Pahn Fah (Phra Sumeru Rd., 02-629-1396), which offers 28-sq-meter rooms for B6,000 a month. For something a little classier, 2 Ratchadamnoen Condominium (Nakhon Sawan Rd., 02-282-9071) has rooms from 40 to 67-sq-meters, ranging from B7,000 a month to B15,000 a month. For more choice, try the nearby Khao San and Phaya Thai areas. Those looking to live the shophoused dream might need to look further afield to Charoenkrung or Banglamphu, because new dwellings on the market are few and far between here.

ROUNDUP

New York Style Steak & Burger

Shake It

Milkshakes are delicious, and even better with booze. Here are six places that do it best. By Vasachol Quadri Escapade Burgers & Shakes

Once Upon a Milkshake

Firehouse

Hidden away in the food court of Siam Paragon, NEW! this recent Singaporean import does milkshakes, and only milkshakes. There are over 30 flavors to choose from, starting with classics like strawberry (B69/89) and butterscotch (B89/119), and getting fancier with the likes of bubblegum (B119/129) and red velvet (B149). There’s no ice used here, so these are some of the richest and creamiest shakes around. Make your shopping experience a little more interesting by opting for one of the three boozy offerings: Rum Raisin (B89/109), Baileys (B119/149) and Malibu (B119/149).

This Soi 11 institution is still pumping out some super burgers. The milkshake list is just as enticing, coming in old-school varieties like Double Chocolate (chocolate ice-cream, homemade chocolate syrup and milk, B140) and Mean Vanilla Bean (vanilla ice-cream, vanilla beans and milk, B140). The alcoholic options start with the Lynchburg Shake (B220), in which a shot of Jack Daniel’s is added to either of the two above choices (whipped cream is optional, too). We also dig the Pina Colada Shake, which mixes vanilla ice-cream with coconut cream, milk and a shot of rum (B220).

Escapade Burgers & Shakes NEW!

This new opening brings flavors from Brooklyn to Bangkok, via Shanghai. As the name suggests, the focus is on oversized burgers and steaks. On top of craft beers, wine and cocktails, they offer a range of milkshakes, mainly classics like vanilla, chocolate and banana chocolate (B95), to which you can add selected spirits. Here, they suggest you pair the vanilla milkshake with triple sec, chocolate with creme de cocoa and banana chocolate with Baileys (all B120). Park 22 (opposite the former Imperial Queens Park Hotel), Sukhumvit Soi 22, 02-262-0920. Open daily 11am-11pm. www. fb.com/NYsteaknburger

Bangers Arguably the premier hotdog joint in town, this tiny Thonglor hangout also does some of the best shakes in the business. You can spruce up the three basic flavors of vanilla, strawberry and peanut butter (B140/180) with a shot of rum for another B120. The real highlights, though, are the four dedicated boozy shakes, including Bail Me Out (Baileys, rum, coffee and vanilla ice-cream, B280), We Are All Nuts (hazelnut syrup, almond liquor and vanilla ice-cream, B280), White Knight (white chocolate liquor, rum and vanilla syrup, B280) and Blah Blah Berry (raspberry, cassis, strawberry, cherry and rum, B280). 159/10 Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor), between Sois 7-9, 02-3921556. Open daily 10:30-1am (Tue 5pm-1am). www.fb.com/ bangersbkk

This tiny bar down in Phra Athit divides opinion with its haughty service, but its cocktails and burgers remain some of the best in town. Mixologist Karn Liangsrisuk also adds his masterful touches to milkshakes, in which he makes use of rare, fresh and infused ingredients. There are eight main milkshakes (B80), and another daily special (B180) that’s announced early on Instagram. You can add a spirit to the Monkey Blenny (vanilla ice-cream, sundried banana, orange juice, milk, marmalade and black peppercorn, B80) or Frost Orangery (vanilla ice-cream, elder flower syrup, orange juice, milk, cracker, marmalade, passion fruit and topped with crispy durian, B80) options for an extra B270, choosing yourself or leaving it up to Karn. He can also customize a shake based on your chosen poison (B350-450). Last time we picked Hendrick’s gin, which he mixed with goat chili-infused liquor, vanilla ice-cream, rosemary, green apple, pineapple juice, apple juice, grapefruit syrup, thyme and topped with white chocolate and a slice of green apple—juicy, spicy and unlike any milkshake we’ve tried before.

25 Degrees Open 24 hours, this US restaurant chain does burgers, ribs, sandwiches and salads. What really excites us, though, are the shakes, especially the four adults-only “spiked” choices. The Banana Shake (B250) combines Captain Morgan dark rum with banana liqueur, fresh banana, milk and vanilla ice-cream, while the Coconut Shake mixes Malibu with coconut milk and vanilla ice-cream. Our pick is probably the Night Owl (Kahlua, chocolate liqueur and vanilla icecream, B250)—a decadent delight. Another refreshing option is the Mint Shake (mint liqueur, mint syrup, vanilla ice-cream and milk, B250), still a pretty rare find in Bangkok. G/F, Pullman Bangkok Hotel G, 188 Silom Rd., 02-238-1991. Open 24 hours daily. www.fb.com/25DegreesBangkok

Bangkok’s bike café scene has moved up a gear. Here are the latest openings. By BK Editorial

Tokyobike & Laliart

Sora City

Tokyobike & Laliart After opening stores in the UK, Australia, Germany and Singapore, the Japanese bike company from the suburb of Yakana, Tokyobike, has reached Thailand. The lightweight bikes put precedence on comfort over speed. Head on down to test out their models, starting from the Bisou (B23,800) up to the Single Speed (SS, B31,900) or the limited New Balance (B34,900). After perusing the bikes, you can kick back at the cozy cafe inside, Laliart Coffee, which serves espresso (from B70) made with organic beans from Northern Thailand, as well as homemade ice-cream (B55) and baked goods like the “marchy” dough and earl grey brownie (both B75). They also stock a range of coffee-making products and some beans. 20 Ari Soi 2, 02-117-1016. Open Tue-Sun 11am-8pm

The Wheels Bike & Bistro Bangkok’s cyclists have peddled far beyond the center of town. Located on Srinakarin Road, almost directly opposite Paradise Park, The Wheels Bike & Bistro focuses more on bike sales, maintenance and parts than food and coffee, but you can discuss your biking needs over sodas (B30) and beers (starting at B100) thanks to the on-site bar. 228 Srinakarin Rd., 094-465-2695, 091-504-1956. Open Mon 10am-8pm; Wed-Thu 10am-8pm; Fri-Sun 10am-10pm

The cement walls, wood windows and pallet display stands at this new café and bike shop on Sukhumvit Soi 26 look like something straight out of Japan. Apart from selling some cute, pastel-colored city bikes (all from the eponymous brand and starting at B13,900), there’s also a cafe serving coffee shop staples. The highlight is their house-blended coffee with nutty and dark chocolate flavors (we think it tastes best as a latte, B95), which they also use to marinate the pork for dishes like the braised pork with rice (B195). We also like the fluffy buttermilk pancakes with assorted toppings (starting at B100). 61/52 Sukhumvit Soi 26, 02-001-6600. Open Thu-Tue 9am-9pm

Bico Cafe This one-stop rustic establishment sells bikes and accessories, and also offers a bike repair service. Smile Riders, the cyclist group behind Bico, aims for the shop to become a community space, hosting activities and exhibitions while serving good coffee. They offer various brewing methods, from French press and pour-over to drip and vacuum, with either single-origin or blended roasts. The espresso starts at B100 and in-house baked items like the upside-down pineapple cake (B150) rotate daily. To help lessen the amount of garbage, Bico doesn’t offer to-go packages. CHEF Q&A Jacobo Astray

22

Jacobo Astray, previously a chef de partie of the legendary El Bulli in Spain, is one of very few chefs in Bangkok to offer private fine dining. Here, he explains what his business, Gula (www.gulabangkok.com), is all about.

Why do private dinners rather than work at a restaurant? There is a new gastronomic trend for fewer customers, long set menus and more exclusive, personal service. I feel very comfortable with this.

How does it work? Once the client emails me information about their dinner requirements, I send them a proposal and arrange a meeting in their home to see the place. On the event date, I arrive about two hours early with any equipment that they are missing to guarantee a perfectly executed dinner. Once guests are seated, the 10-12 courses start and I explain each dish being served.

Do you have your own venue or any specific requirements from a clients’ home? We don’t have a physical venue yet but very often, restaurants or hotels contact me to do special dinners or events. Apart from that, we work at the clients’ homes. Obviously I need a kitchen space, but it does not necessarily need to be fully equipped. I can bring some equipment with me or even adapt the menu. For me, it´s more important that the kitchen size is relative to the number of guests.

What might a 12-course dinner for six people include? I execute molecular techniques learned from El Bulli. Sample dishes are olive spheres (liquid olive) or melted eggplant with miso and honey as snacks; starters like mushroom foam with 63-degree cooked egg, crispy ham and truffle oil; sous-vide lamb rack with polenta and rosemary as entree. Desserts might be the yogurt sponge with white chocolate, crispy coconut and berries. There’s no fixed price per person, as it really depends on the ingredients served, I’d say between B2,500-B3,000 per person.

OPEN DOOR

Site Salt's chef has moved his Ari-defining food to the other side of town. The buzz: Chef Ruangrit Teparak, formerly of Salt, has abandoned Ari for the resolutely less hip Bang Na. Salt had come to define Ari, perhaps even more so than Pla Dib, so it's a bit of a shock that its chef would head for the 'burbs, down an anonymous soi tucked behind CentralPlaza Bangna. But with his new partner, Andrew Bunnag, a landscape designer based in Hua Hin, they've found a high-ceilinged space to dial things back, focus on a slightly shorter menu (it still requires its own clipboard) and introduce Greater Bangkok to the joys of fusion cuisine, a-la-Ari. The decor: The vast open space provides plenty of room between tables, high-ceiling windows and an outdoor terrace. Bunnag held on to elements from the restaurant's actual construction site and

24

added a few more picked up at salvage yards—such as a concrete mixer or massive chains. The result is an interesting variation on industrial chic, and true to the restaurant's name, is more idealized construction site than Kinfolk-magazine-worthy workshop. The food: Ruangrit's menu spans sushi, pizza, steaks and fusion dishes. If that sounds too ambitious, know that he packed in the crowds for years at Salt doing just that. His prominent pizza oven is the real deal, he can slice raw fish convincingly enough and his frequent trips to Europe show in his French dishes. That means you can have a thin-crust pizza with parma ham (B280/400), a giant tub of sashimi on ice (sets from B450-1,300), or even kimchi fried rice (with grilled chicken, B220) under one roof. We particularly like

the fusion dishes, where the chef's personality comes through a bit more. Do try the grilled snow fish teriyaki with crispy bacon (B300). Why you should care: If you don't live in Bang Na, you probably care more about what this means for Salt than anything else. But denizens of the eastern 'burbs will definitely see this as a sign their neck of the woods could be on its way to getting craft beers, cold brews and eggs Benedict at every street corner. In the meantime, locals now have a trendy one-stop-shop to grab some sashimi, a pizza or venture into some fusion cuisine. GrĂŠgoire Glachant Bizzo, Bang Na-Trat Soi 23, 086-383-3600. New Nippon

Set in a three-story, bright orange building, Japanese restaurant Iki (2 Naradhiwas Ratchanagarindra Soi 4, Sathorn, 02-286-5001) is pulling in the Sathorn office crowds. The first two floors are decorated in a warm mix of wood and leather, where you can enjoy a la carte bites like menji katsu (B200), mixed tempura (B400) and mixed sashimi (B1,500) made with mostly imported produce. The open-air rooftop on the third floor might be a bit too hot for lunch, but does make for a good after-work spot.

Lunch Friendly

Kisso (8/F, The Westin Grande Sukhumvit, 259 Sukhumvit 19, 02-207-8000) just launched a new sushi kaiseki-style lunch comprising six courses: an appetizer of the day, sashimi, a charcoal grill dish of your choice, seven kinds of sushi, red miso soup and dessert. Priced at B1,200, the lunch course is available Mon-Sat 12-2:30pm.

Curry Paste

Chef Jason Bailey has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to bringing technology to Thai food. His big investment for the new Paste (3/F Gaysorn Plaza, 999 Ploen Chit Rd., 02-6561003) is a coconut milk extractor which lets him produce plenty of fresh coconut milk in-house. He’s using it to create new curry dishes like gang gai gorlae (Southern Thai-Muslim curry with sous-vide chicken, B480) and the Southern-style curry with catch of the day (B750). The wine list is also longer here; starting at B310/glass and B1,200/bottle. BK Editorial

This new spot in Ekkamai is already popular among the young, hip crowd. The futuristic, red-lit venue aims to be a bit of everything. It starts the day as a brunch spot with a straightforward menu of panini, wraps (both from B170) and, of course, eggs Benedict (B230), to be enjoyed along with Tonino Lamborghini-branded coffee. Evenings see the menu extend to tuna tatare (B240) and slow-cooked pork medallion (B270) plus pizza and pasta (from B260). The signature drink is called Tonino Lamborghini vodka, but we recommend just sidling up to the bartender and letting him mix something to match your mood. Yuan HHHH Chinese. Millennium Hilton Bangkok, 123 Charoen Nakhon Rd., 02-442-2000. Open MonS at 11:30am-10:30pm; Sun 11am-3pm, 6-10:30pm BBB-BBBB F

The elegance of the decor and the sweeping views of the Chao Phraya are reason alone to visit, but this refined Cantonese restaurant’s bustling open kitchen delivers, too. The best deal is the all-you-can-eat dim sum lunch, which comes with such delicacies as snow fish stuffed with shrimp (B150 a la carte), steamed crab legs (B150), and deep-fried creamy custard buns (B80). On top of the dim sum, you’ll get to sample delicious soups and meats, such as the roasted duck. Service is particularly impressive: that’s one area where standalones struggle to keep up with five-star riverside

Pul Sin HHHH Thai-Chinese. 460 Prachathipatai Rd. (Wisutkasat Junction), Phra Nakorn, 02-281-9229, 02-2822728. Open daily 9am-9:30pm. No corkage charge. B. F

This Chinese restaurant is the stuff of legend, having held a reputation for some of the best roasted duck in town for more than 60 years. But, apart from that speciality, there’s not much that really demands you traverse across town. We’re not exactly impressed by the slow service or inattentive staff, but it doesn’t seem to bother the hard-core fan base, mostly government officials working in the area. Prices are pretty cheap, too, with plenty of proper dishes starting at B60, while the dining room is bright and inviting, thanks to a revamp a few years ago. The long menu is clearly separated into categories:

hotels. If you’re seated close to the kitchen, be warned that the loud hiss of the burners under the woks can get a bit annoying, though. It slightly ruins the serenity of the river views and attentive service. On the food front, Yuan is really solid, but not solid that it stands appart from the legions of Cantonese restaurants in town. The fried scallops drizzled with mayo and served atop a sparse bed of cabbage and carrot shavings—a signature dish—are more Marina HK (a pretty grotty place in Siam) than Hong Kong’s Michelinstarred Lung King Heen. The roast pork, also a signature dish, is another serious disappointment—too dry, too bland. Stick to the duck, which is done just right. We’d also recommend the wonderfully crisp jellyfish, the bouncy steamed prawn dumplings and the spicy, hot and sour soup with chicken. The desserts, too, are a pleasant surprise, whether it’s the fresh mango pudding or the much more classic sesame dumplings in ginger syrup. Evenings are a la carte only, a good time to get Peking duck (B1,600) since it’s not part of the lunch deal. At B999 net (inclusive of tea and chrysanthemum tea, rising to B1,200 net on Sat-Sun starting from Mar 14) the midday deal is hard to beat , though: lots of good food, impeccable service and stunning views.

chicken, seafood, fish, crab and, of course, duck . The latter comes in portions priced at B75, B130 and B300. The dish lives up to its reputation and we love that the thick slices of duck are both tender and juicy, swimming in a well-rounded stock. The crab fried rice, which took 30 minutes to arrive on our last visit, isn’t amazing, but is a decent side that’s not at all soggy. Other dishes are a let-down, though, such as the stirfried fish maw with eggs (B100/150/200), which comes with sad, tiny pieces of maw. It’s almost flavorless, too, if not for the small side of sour soy sauce. The stir-fried shrimp with dried chili is similarly bland, tasting as if it’s been quickly fried up with little attention to seasoning. The or suan (oyster fried in egg batter, B85/130/170) is better but, served without flour, it’s not really the or suan most of us know. The oldstyle tangy chili sauce is delicious, though. Pul Sin is generally quite packed-out and walk-in customers can have a tough time winning the attention of the harried staff, so it’s best to book ahead. That said, if you’re not coming especially for the star dish, you’re better off leaving this old establishment to the food bloggers who review it over and over again.

now Hey Bangkokians, Which Movie are You?

The Stressed Out Junior Exec This is you: You hang out in Thonglor and party with the beautiful people but you have 30 insane clients to deal with tomorrow and they all expect greatness from your foggy brain. What you need: To slow way down and gather your thoughts. Watch this: About Time. Fittingly, this 2013 romantic comedy drama is about one young man discovering his family’s power to travel through time, and how he tries to use it to win over the woman of his dreams. Along the way, he finds out that even his superpower can’t shield him from the ups and downs of ordinary life. Don’t just take it from us: “Brilliantly written and well directed by Curtis (this is his third film behind the camera), About Time is just another jewel in his crown as the reigning romantic comedy king.” -Michael A. Smith, MediaMikes

The Burned Out Senior Exec

The Moneyed Student

This is you: Basically, 10 years of being the aforementioned junior exec, and not watching the right movies, and now you’re ready to move to Pai and start buffalo herding.

This is you: You’re about to graduate from Chula, ABAC or Thammasat and hesitating between that over-paid job at an oiland-gas company or touring the world on a bicycle (with your parents’ money).

What you need: Something to remind you that life is beautiful.

What you need: A movie that explores all those scenarios.

Watch this: The Million Dollar Arm, where J.B. Bernstein (Jon Hamm) is a sports agent with a failing career. In a last ditch effort, he flies to India to find cricket players he could make into great Major League baseball stars. On the way, he learns some important lessons about friendship, family and teamwork.

Watch this: American Reunion. In this follow-up to the high-school comedy American Pie, the gang is reunited 13 years later. From deteriorating sex lives to abusive employers, things haven’t quite worked out the way they planned. Somehow, the restorative powers of sex will make it all OK.

Don’t just take it from us: Scott Foundas of Variety described the film as a “sharp, slickly produced...stirring underdog tale.”

Don’t just take it from us: “American Reunion reminds us what we liked about the original.” —Peter Travers of Rolling Stone.

The Trendy Business Owner

The Freshly Minted Parents

This is you: You started a coffee shop, a brunch cafe—in Thonglor, of course —a boutique wine import business or a handcrafted leather goods shop that only exists on Facebook. At this rate, you’ve calculated you’ll break even by 2035.

This is you: You have kids now. Which you love. You also no longer have clothes that don’t have puke on them, friends who don’t have kids, the ability to talk about anything but your kids, or the time to sleep.

What you need: Inspiration and a little pat on the back. It’s all going to be OK.

What you need: Something for your little angels to watch while you doze off.

Watch this: Forrest Gump. Not only will it leave you refreshed and rejuvenated, but this 1994 classic sees the slow-witted Forrest become a millionaire thanks to his shrimp fishing biz. If he can do it, so can you.

(Have them) Watch this: Planes: Fire & Rescue. In this sequel to the beloved Planes, Dusty the airplane joins a team of firefighting planes. When a massive wildfire breaks out, he must step up to become a true hero.

Don’t just take it from us: It won the Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Visual Effects, and Best Film Editing.

Don’t just take it from us: “There are honestly stirring moments and ... soaring 3D visuals.” —Justin Chang of Variety

FREEWILL ASTROLOGY PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): When Arnold Schwarzenegger became Governor of California in 2003, the state had the eighth largest economy in the world, right behind Italy and just ahead of Brazil. Schwarzenegger had never before held political office. When Cambodian doctor Haing Nor performed in the film The Killing Fields, for which he ultimately won an Oscar, he had no training as an actor. He was a novice. Will you try to follow in their footsteps, Pisces? Is it possible you could take on a role for which you have no preparation or seasoning? According to my divinations, the answer is yes. But is it a good idea? That’s a more complex issue. Trust your gut. ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): To depict what lay beyond the limits of the known world, medieval mapmakers sometimes drew pictures of dragons and sea serpents. Their images conveyed the sense that these territories were uncharted and perhaps risky to explore. There were no actual beasties out there, of course. I think it’s possible you’re facing a comparable situation. The frontier realm you are wandering through may seem to harbor real dragons, but I’m guessing they are all of the imaginary variety. That’s not to say you should entirely let down your guard. Mix some craftiness in with your courage. Beware of your mind playing tricks. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Whenever I close my eyes and seek psychic visions of your near future, I see heroic Biblical scenes. Moses is parting the Red Sea. Joseph is interpreting Pharaoh’s dream. Jesus is feeding 5,000 people with five loaves of bread and two fish. What’s the meaning of my reveries? Well, this psychic stuff is tricky, and I hesitate to draw definitive conclusions. But if I had to guess, I’d speculate that you are ripe to provide a major blessing or perform an unprecedented service for people you care about. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 20): In a New Yorker cartoon, Tom Gauld outlines “The Four Undramatic Plot Structures”:

36

1. “The hero is confronted by an antagonistic force and ignores it until it goes away.” 2. “The protagonist is accused of wrongdoing, but it’s not a big thing and soon gets sorted out.” 3. “The heroine is faced with a problem but it’s really difficult so she gives up.” 4. “A man wants something. Later, he’s not so sure. By suppertime he’s forgotten all about it.” In my astrological opinion, Gemini, you should dynamically avoid all four of those fates. Now is a time for you to take brave, forceful action as you create dramatic plot twists that serve your big dreams. CANCER (Jun 21-Jul 22): “To be happy is to be able to become aware of oneself without fright,” said heavyweight German philosopher Walter Benjamin, a fellow Cancerian. I am happy to report that there’s a good chance you will soon be blessed with an extraordinary measure of this worry-free self-awareness. And when you do––when you are basking in an expanded self-knowledge infused with self-love and self-appreciation–– some of your chronic fear will drop away, and you will have at your disposal a very useful variety of happiness. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): “As you get older, the heart sheds its leaves like a tree,” said French novelist Gustave Flaubert. “You cannot hold out against certain winds. Each day tears away a few more

leaves; and then there are the storms that break off several branches at one go. And while nature’s greenery grows back again in the spring, that of the heart never grows back.” Do you agree with Flaubert, Leo? I don’t. I say that you can live with such resilient innocence that your heart’s leaves grow back after a big wind, and become ever-more lush and hardy as you age. You can send down such deep, strong roots and stretch your branches toward the sun with such vigor that your heart always has access to the replenishment it needs to flourish. The coming weeks will provide evidence that what I say is true. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): “I will not wait to love as best as I can,” says writer Dave Eggers. “We thought we were young and that there would be time to love well sometime in the future. This is a terrible way to think. It is no way to live, to wait to love.” That’s your keynote for the coming weeks, Virgo. That’s your wake-up call and the rose-scented note under your pillow and the message scrawled in lipstick on your bathroom mirror. If there is any part of you that believes love will be better or fuller or more perfect in the future, tell that part of you to shut up and embrace this tender command: Now is the time to love with all of your heart and all of your soul and all of your mind.

LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 22): I love the song “Shine On You Crazy Diamond,” by Pink Floyd. Other favorites are Tool’s “Third Eye” and Yo La Tengo’s “Pass the Hatchet, I Think I’m Goodkind.” But all of these tunes have a similar problem. They’re more than ten minutes long. Even before my attention span got shrunk by the Internet, listening to them tested my patience. Now I have to forcefully induce a state of preternatural relaxation if I want to hear them all the way through. In the coming days, Libra, don’t be like a too-much-of-a-goodthing song. Be willing to edit yourself. Observe concise boundaries. Get to the point quickly. (You’ll be rewarded for it.) SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21): Sneaking around isn’t necessary, Scorpio. There’s no useful power to be gained by hiding information or pursuing secret agendas. This is not a time when it’s essential for you to be a master of manipulation who’s ten steps ahead of everyone else. For now, you are likely to achieve maximum success and enjoy your life the most if you are curious, excitable, and transparent. I invite you to embody the mindset of a creative, precocious child who has a loving mommy and daddy. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): In 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first humans to reach the summit of Mount Everest. It took them seven weeks to climb the 29,029foot peak. In 1960, Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh got into a bathyscaphe and sailed to the lowest point on the planet, the Mariana Trench at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. It took them four hours and 47 minutes to go down 36,070 feet. Based on my analysis of your astrolog-

ical omens, I think the operative metaphor for you in the coming weeks should be the deep descent, not the steep ascent. It’s time to explore and hang out in the depths rather than the heights. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): The African country of Ivory Coast has two different capital cities. Yamoussoukro is the official capital, while Abidjan is the actual capital, where the main governmental action takes place. I suspect there’s a comparable split in your personal realm, Capricorn: a case of mixed dominance. Maybe that’s a good thing; maybe it allows for a balance of power between competing interests. Or perhaps it’s a bit confusing, causing a split in your attention that hampers you from expressing a unified purpose. Now would be a favorable time to think about how well the division is working for you, and to tinker with it if necessary. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): I’ve gone on three book tours and done my spoken-word show in scores of bookstores. But one of my favorite author events took place at the Avenue C Laundromat in New York City’s East Village. There I performed with two other writers as part of the “Dirty Laundry: Loads of Prose” reading series. It was a boisterous event. All of us authors were extra loose and goofy, and the audience offered a lot of funny, good-nature heckling. The unusual location freed everyone up to have maximum amusement. I see the coming weeks as a time when you, too, might thrive by doing what you do best in seemingly out-of-context situations. If you’re not outright invited to do so, I suggest you invite yourself.

Ornanong Thaisriwong B-Floor Theatre’s Ornanong Thaisriwong, 34, caused a massive stir last month when the restaging of her solo theater performance Bang-La-Merd, part of which detailed her ordeal registering her play with the army, attracted a nightly audience of plainclothes soldiers who recorded each show. Here, she tells BK about the thrill of performing live and the duty artists owe to society. Our society’s problems drove me to study sociology and anthropology at Thammasat University 15 years ago. I met the love of my life there: acting. After graduating, my friend took me to watch a play called Crying Century by the B-Floor group. It was love at first sight. They introduced me to the world of physical theater, using beautiful visuals to comment on pressing social issues. There weren’t many people doing things like that. I thought it was awesome, so I asked to join. History shouldn’t be written by a single group of people who put everything in a book and call it history. We all need some sort of documentation to remember things that have happened. Even our Facebook statuses are historical documents. This is the history that won’t be put in books. An artist’s work should shed light on what’s really going on. People don’t have to agree with them, but it should raise questions about what society is facing. That’s the duty of an artist.

I love performing live. I love that you can get real feedback from your audience right away. That’s what differentiates it from the movies or soap operas, where everything’s left to the editors. You can tell how your audience feels from the look in their eyes. Audience reactions can be surprising. At one of my recent performances of Bang-La-Merd, a lady stopped my show after 30 minutes and confronted me passionately, but politely, saying my show offended her. She said she wanted to exercise her right to leave. I was stunned, but that was her right. Many Thais judge things before getting all the information. I asked the lady what scenes offended her, but she couldn’t tell me. She just said it offended her. Our concept of Thainess needs to get with the times. Some people hold onto this Thainess so tight that there’s no room to add new interpretations. Why should we be compared against the Rama I era? I admire our young artists. They live in a society full of disharmony

and they feel the need to speak out. It’s kind of sad that the older artists ignore them. The main perk of doing small theater productions is that there are no limits. You don’t need to worry about sponsors. It might be hard to find t h e m o n e y, but that’s the price you pay for freedom of thought.

my shows were being monitored by officials. It’s the first time that’s happened to me. I feel that’s a creative space that shouldn’t be invaded by anyone. The whole incident emphasized my message that we don’t have freedom of expression. We, artists, have to self-censor ourselves based on the presumption that others will censor us. I’m talking about freedom of expression while there’s a soldier at my show—what a day!

I stand for free speech

The original version of Bang-La-Merd was inspired by the lese majeste SMS incident where an old man [Ampon Tangnoppakul] died in jail before the court ruled on his case. Lese majeste cases are a closed book in which no one knows what’s happening. My first show in 2012 was all about questioning the law. The latest version is all about freedom of expression under martial law. I was pretty shocked and scared that

I see it as a violation of my fundamental rights and freedoms, not just as an artist, but as an ordinary person. We have been taught about citizen’s duties, not citizen’s rights. That’s why lots of us don’t know what others’ rights are. Public and private space have been merged, so we don’t really know what’s ours.

I stand for free speech. If you don’t hold this ideal, then you must think important topics are sacred things that can’t be criticized or touched upon. You must believe things can’t be held to investigation or public scrutiny. Freedom is about respecting each other, not causing harm. Our society is governed by feelings, which override reason. If you’re driven by anger and hatred, chances are you don’t even know what you’re fighting about. There is no unity in this world. Everything is clashing and cultures are getting mixed up. You can’t just deny someone because they don’t think like you. Living in harmony is unnatural. There will always be fights and moments when people don’t agree. Arguments can help you understand each other; they don’t necessarily harm anyone. I want my right to an open election back. When they give it back to me, then we can all talk maturely.
