Songkran in Bangkok

Some people don’t know though. Could you explain to us? Songkran is a… look like a shirt, and the button, the button... like this. The wrong, maybe... Songkran not only this, but maybe… shirt and trousers.

General, what is Songkran exactly? What is the true Songkran? Yes. What’s Songkran? I know that, I know that, I know everything. Songkran, I know that.

General Manager Andrew Hiransomboon

Most of you, dear readers, are Thai or have lived here for over three years (see, BK is like Google and Facebook, we know everything about you). But just in case you’re new in town, we thought General Somchai Chaisom could give you a few tips on navigating Songkran. General Somchai is Minister of Happiness, Foreign Affairs, Explaining to Foreigners and Good Intentions.

facebook.com/bkmagazine

Right. It usually does get very wet and people tend to unbutton their shirts and pants. Do you approve of that kind of behavior? We’ll probably just execute them. Yikes. That seems harsh. Many countries in ASEAN understand because ASEAN is not the same. Songkran is indeed celebrated throughout the region. Is it OK to splash water on people you don’t know? Some people in Thailand do not want Songkran. Do you know that? Sure, but what if they’re in shorts or wearing a bikini? Are they fair game? Tourists think that Thailand is beautiful, safe and that they can do anything they want here. That they can put on their bikinis and go anywhere they want. I ask, can you get away with wearing bikinis in Thailand? Unless you are not beautiful? OK, so no bikinis unless you’re ugly. What if it’s just a really tight shirt, though? The East and the West are different. I ask you to tell the US that its one-size-fits-all shirt does not suit everyone. There must be different sizes... So, do not make one-size shirts for people worldwide. Do you need to say something before you touch someone with talcum powder? Love me just a little, but love me for long time. Wow, OK. That sounds a bit personal. Don’t worry. If you’re not doing anything wrong, there’s no need to be afraid. Thank you, General. Can we sprinkle you with water? OK. That’s enough.

upfront HOT OR NOT

Hot: Closed restaurants

Not: Rumored closures

For all the rumours about early closing times and curfews, the real reason we can’t get into restaurants is because they’re closed voluntarily. We head to Taper for dinner: it’s only open for brunch. We swing by Le Du for lunch: it’s only open for dinner. We turn up to Opposite on a Sunday night: it’s closed for a private party. We drop by Ceresia for breakfast: it’s closed Sunday mornings.

STREET TALK

Hot: Nudity

Not: Drinking and driving

First Halloween turned into an excuse for sexy fancy dress, and now our outfits for Songkran are going the same way (see page 26). Every year they get tighter and skimpier, which we’re all for. So put on your shortest sequined shorts and start downing those buckets. Just leave the car at home.

Hot: Fried chicken

Not: Burgers

You are not nearly as passionate about burgers as you think you are. In our recent online burger quiz (ow.ly/L7GWT), most people failed to match more than three Bangkok burgers with the restaurant. Think about that. And anyway, burgers are so last week now that Taiwanese junk food sensation Hot Star XXL has arrived with fried chicken fillets the size of your head.

Hot: 70s nostalgia

Not: 00s nostalgia

Trawling through Bangkok’s record stores in honor of Record Store Day this week (see page 14), we came across some real gems buried beneath the well-pawed Slade and Springsteen LPs our dads probably tossed away back in the day. While crate-digging in Bangkok can be a frustrating endeavor, we’ll take it over any more club nights dedicated to ironically cobbled-together mp3 playlists.

After losing his fertilizer supply business to the 1997 financial crisis, Taradon Tunduan, 68, took up a completely new career altogether: tree surgery. Eighteen years later, he’s now the number-one tree surgeon in a country where the profession is hardly recognized. Here, he discusses the poor state of Bangkok’s urban trees, and what can be done about it. What does it take to be a good tree surgeon? Only to love trees. It’s not limited to men or women or people from a specific educational background. You simply have to develop that personal interest and learn how to communicate with the trees. You have to be able to feel and understand what they need. It’s no more complicated than learning a new language. All you have to do is be patient and observe keenly. How would you like to see Bangkok’s urban landscaping develop? A water compound is made from two hydrogen molecules and one oxygen. Urban green space should be built to the same ratio. It shouldn’t be there to offset urban development but rather be a part of it. I don’t hope for Bangkok to become a jungle like Khao Yai, but I wish that we had more greenery suitable for an urban lifestyle. Separating trees from the rest of the city is missing the point. Urban forestry

is totally new for Bangkok, so our tree surgeons are like elementary children compared to those in Australia or the United States. Do people complain when they see you cutting down trees or branches? Yes. One time a guy stopped his car and shouted curse-words at me. I’m kind of happy in a way that they show concern, even if it is misdirected—trees need to be cut in order to grow. You know the old saying; spare the rod, spoil the child. We cut the trees so that they can thrive. You only became a tree surgeon at the age of 50. How did you make that transition? I did my own research at the library and, mostly, on the internet. But I learned a lot from just going out and doing it. I started by cutting small trees causing problems for townhouses around Sukhumvit.

get in the loop

bkmagazine.com

It’s a very physically demanding profession to take up at such an age. I have assistants who do the climbing, but I do occasionally have to climb the tree myself to demonstrate and reassure them that there is nothing to be scared of; that the branches can hold my weight and theirs. How would you like to see the profession of urban tree surgery develop in Bangkok? In the 18 years I’ve been doing this job, I haven’t seen any obvious change. But even so, Bangkok is actually ahead of many cities in Southeast Asia—surgeons in other capitals don’t even know which branches should be cut. They misread the signs that the tree is sending. I’m not a businessman and don’t want to expand my business. Instead I train people—we need more people to spread our ideas of urban tree management. Interview by Sam Nathapong

Center Stage

Where to admire the visual arts

Chatuchak is fast becoming Bangkok's most vibrant art hub. It's long been known for the weekend market's bustling "Art Zone" (see right), which is an unprentetious answer to the high-brow galleries of Silom and Sukhumvit. But the neighborhood's green spaces and quiet atmosphere is now attracting top-level institutions, too. MOCA opened further to the North, gathering the kingdom's foremost artists in one stunning structure. Numthong Gallery is showcasing today's edgiest names in contemporary art. And Sala Sudasiri Sobha is the city's most refined concert hall. Sala Sudasiri Sohbha was founded by Nat Yontararak, an award-winning classical pianist, composer and teacher. Loogtan, Nat’s daughter and the concert hall’s manager, says that the character of Chatuchak played a big part in the choice of location. “We decided to build it here because the area also has a peaceful atmosphere. It’s tucked down a dead-end lane, not too far from the main road but quiet enough for our music-related activities like concerts, training and sound recording, none of which can happen if you’re near a noisy, bustling road.”

Roberto Saltori

On the edge of Chatuchak District, the award-winning piano master Nat Yontararak found the perfect neighborhood for his dream concert hall, Sala Sudasiri Sobha.

“We decided to build here because the area has a peaceful atmosphere. It’s quiet enough for our music-related activities like concerts, training and sound recording." Loogtan adds that it sits in a neighborhood known for its well-cultured residents—affluent and educated classical music admirers. It’s also not far from the Thailand Cultural Center and Muangthai Ratchadalai Theater, Bangkok’s two other main performance halls. “And the new train station will be right beside us too, bringing more like-minded people to the area,” says Loogtan. Music isn't the only art represented in Chatuchak. Narate Kathong's Artlover Gallery is just one of the many galleries at the Chatuchak Weekend Market. Narate has been exhibited throughout the world and has won multiple awards.

So you know where to indulge in music? Now check out these places to both look at and purchase the work of Thailand’s hottest artistic talent.

Chatuchak Weekend Market “Art Zone” JJ Market is vast, but art lovers know where to go: Section 7. At this remote section at the far-right corner of the bazaar, young and veteran artists gather to display everything from old paintings to watercolors, etchings, charcoals and sculptures. Prices vary depending on your bargaining skills. Phahonyothin and Kamphaeng Phet Rd. Open SatSun, 10am-7pm

Numthong Gallery This is the new location for one of Bangkok’s best-known dealers, Numthong Sae Tang. With years of experience in the art business, he curates masterpieces from both established and emerging Thai and international artists, including Montien Boonma, Chatchai Puipia, Vasan Sitthiket, Kamin Lertchaiprasert and Michael Shaowanasai. Ari Soi 5, Phahonyothin Soi 7, 02-617-2794. Open Mon-Sat 11am-6pm. www. gallerynumthong.com

MOCA Further to the north on Viphavadi-Rangsit Road, you’ll find telecom tycoon Boonchai Becharongkul’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA). Here, he displays his vast collection of paintings, drawings and sculptures from notable Thai contemporary artists. The highlight is the country’s largest collection of Tawan Duchanee paintings. 499 Kamphaengphet 6 Rd., Ladyao, Chatuchak, 02-953-1005/-7. Open Tue-Fri 10am-5pm, Sat-Sun 11am-6pm. www.mocabangkok.com

With a cultural range that spans affordable art at an open-air market to refined classical concert halls and avant-garde galleries, Chatuchak and its environs are now Bangkok's most exciting playground for art enthusiasts.

TRANSPORTATION More than 30,000 people in Bangkok still use water transportation every day. Bangkok Post reports that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has ordered 200 households around Khlong Lad Phrao out of the area to make way for a new boat service that will provide transport from Lad Phrao to Phra Khanong. The same development aims to improve the environment along a 5.5km stretch of Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem, reaching to the Chao Phraya River, with small relaxation areas proposed every 100 meters.

The Chao Phraya River could be about to see a renaissance. Big new developments are both underway and moments from being given the BMA’s green light, including new water-borne transportation links, pedestrianized boardwalks and a shopping mall offering Paragon-levels of luxury retail. So, here’s how the Chao Phraya could look tomorrow. By Sam Nathapong, illustrations by Panita Thiraphapong

Traditionally known for its jewelry and antique shops, Charoenkrung is now gaining a reputation for contemporary art and design. The biggest development on the old riverside road is the news that Thailand Creative and Design Center (TCDC) is relocating to the Grand Postal Building and will be open by the end of 2016, which was recently renovated by the Department of Architecture Co., Ltd. and Shma Company Ltd. Renderings of the new TCDC will be unveiled by the end of August. TCDC could potentially be the spark to activate interest in the Charoenkrung area and connect the dots between its existing network of art galleries and bars both new and old.

COMMUNITY

RETAIL The malls just keep on coming. Set to open in 2017, Icon Siam will be the biggest of all. The mega B50-billion riverside development by three property giants—Siam Piwat, Magnolia Quality Development and Charoen Pokphand— will transform the 80,000-sq-meter plot of land on Charoen Nakhon Road into something approaching a brand new suburb. It will consist of two luxurious sky-scraper residential buildings, as well as two shopping complexes, a 3,500seat auditorium and a large-scale multimedia light show.

A rendering of the Kadeejeen Community Museum

The BMA plans to improve accessibility for both cars and boats to the Klong San area, also known as the Kadeejeen community. Once considered one of Bangkok’s most cosmopolitan districts, the area is still filled with unorganized street vendors selling all sort of items, whom the BMA intend to organize into a proper street market, while improving the environment by covering the dirty riverbank in aquatic plants.

Duangrit Bunnag Architect/Founder of DBALP, owner of Jam Factory Most people who live in Bangkok forget that we have the river. Urban structures have not been built adjacent to the river. That’s why we’re trying to include the river in every conversation we have about urban development. The real charm of the Chao Phraya from the Thonburi side is how you approach it. Around Klong San, for example, you must walk past a jumble of alleyways and mixed-used shop houses and then suddenly you’re standing in an open area with the river in front of you.

Good Signs

The river is alive when there are people around it. It is part of the urban fabric and, whenever we build something new, we must consider preserving its charm. We must look for possibility within the river’s current context. Don’t try to change things, whether you think they’re good or bad, otherwise we will have to rebuild the whole thing, which means tearing the old structures down.

The BMA also plans to set up signs to give information about historical sites and buildings reaching from Klong San to the Kadeejeen Community. Icon Siam

Current riverside developments destroy the charm and spirit of Bangkok’s riverside. We always look at case studies from abroad, forgetting that Thailand is different. We must respect our river and its legacy and add value to what’s there. Preserving what’s there will create genuine charm.

Taking in an area that encompasses the Bangkok Fish Market, Wat Yannawa and the old Bangkok Dockyard, Yannawa Riverwalk will be a 1.2km, five-meter-wide, car-free promenade with cycle lane and recreational space. There is also talk of establishing a museum that tells the history of the area. Backed by residents and landlords, the proposal is currently awaiting approval from BMA. If it goes ahead, expect a completion date of 2017 at a cost of B152 million. Yannawa Riverwalk could be considered Bangkok’s very own version of Hong Kong’s Avenue of Stars or Melbourne’s Southbank.

Samruay Imkrajai Taxi Boat Driver The Chao Phraya River has become a part of me. Tourists are really encouraged to spend their time by the river, and often hire a longtail boat to reach quiet locations away from the city. I take them along the canal routes to see the slow, unencumbered side of river life. I am concerned about the current water quality. Bangkok has problems with flooding which means that fresh water in the north gets stored behind dams. As a result, salt water is engulfing the Chao Phraya and we have terrible pH levels. Ultimately it will be uninhabitable for freshwater fish. It’s at its worst around Klong Toei pier. Feeling Blue In keeping with the current trend of local designers adapting traditional craft skills, Vickteerut’s sister line, Vick’s, has rolled out a line of special indigo-dye shirts as part of its latest spring/summer collection. Head designer Teerut “Vick” Wongwatanasin and cohort Pang Sudhinaraset traveled to Chiang Mai and Sakolnakorn to learn the local indigo-dying methods before integrating them into the brand’s trademark linen shirt designs. Prices start at B4,400 per piece. Available at the Vick’s boutique, Ari Soi 2, 02-2791260. www.vicksweekend.com

Instant Living 10DK is a new interior design service that promises “total decoration in 10 days.” It’s the brainchild of Preechaya Chavalittumrong, a Cornell architecture graduate who also has almost a decade’s experience working as an analyst at The Government Housing Bank of Thailand. Preechaya and her team of architects and designers say they can inspect, design and decorate your condo within 10 days. The service achieves its quick results by leaving the foundations of your apartment untouched while filling the space with furniture and props, mostly from high-quality local brands. There are four design packages: timeless classic, modern elegance, comfy loft and Scandinavian-inspired (starting from B380,000). Contact 095-873-0505 or email your inquiry to hello@10dkbangkok.com.

About Time Leather and canvas NATO straps are all the rage in the watch world—as are vintage designs. Timex has taken notice and just issued a very smart Weekender 40 package that comes with a watch and three NATO straps to keep your watch looking its best in the office (in leather), on casual nights out (navy with an oxblood striped canvas) and on the weekends (green canvas). The watch itself is a real beauty, with a very 50s round body and clean, white dial with two sets of military-style numbers from 1-12 and 13-24. It’s the kind of watch that makes you wonder why anyone would spend B150,000 on big brands. B4,900 (quartz movement) at a department store near you.

Wet Look

To celebrate Songkran this weekend (Apr 13-15, see BK Now, page 26), you’ve got a choice of pool parties or electronic music festivals. Here’s how to show up in style. By Vasachol Quadri and Chantich Kongchanmitkul

By the Pool

Electronic Festival

Two of the biggest hotel parties this year are Songkran Splash Away Party (Apr 11) at W Hotel and gCircuit at Centara Grand (Apr 10-12). For the boys, make sure you go bold neon or gold while for the girls, a pool party always means a new bikini and something stylish to wrap up in. Also, don’t forget some tinted moisturizer or foundation with SPF level above 25.

Need something more upbeat? Turn it up by attending one or more of the massive EDM festivals happening at RCA (Pepsi S20, Elecktro Liquid Festival and K-EDM Sonkran Festival). No matter your choice, girls, rock a crop top with full makeup (just make sure it’s waterproof). Guys, this is your one real excuse to wear board shorts, along with a print tee and shades.

SHOPPING

Spin it

Ahead of the global Record Store Day on Apr 18, we round up Bangkok’s 13 best brick-and-mortar stores to source vinyl. By BK Staff Bryter Layter

8 Musique

1979 Vinyl and Unknown Pleasures

Fatblack Records

Situated in Thonglor’s Black Amber building, this record storeslash-live venue specializes in Brit-rock, from The Beatles right through to the Libertines. The garden-like, tiny space also hosts regular gigs from up-and-coming rockers.

This popular store offers up everything: new releases from indie/ pop bands like Disclosure and The 1975 to classics from The Velvet Underground and The Flaming Lips as well as Thai 90s artists like Proud and See-Tao-Ter. They also stock a number of turntables, both for beginners and for pros—the Crosley Memory Master (B23,500), which comes with a three-speed turntable and cassette player, is a good starting point.

Good for: Brit-pop/rock 4/F, Black Amber Building (behind Kiatnakin Bank), between Thonglor Soi 5-7. www.fb.com/1979vinyl

8 Musique

Good for: Oft-overlooked reissues (Francoise Hardy, Tom Waits) and local releases from Plastic Section and Cyndi Seui Ei8ht Thonglor, Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor), 02-713-8366. BTS Thong Lo. on.fb.me/13Qfoi6

Big Tiger Records Follow the mo lam sounds to this sweaty corner of Chatuchak market. Like a mini Zudrangma, it sells a lot of forgotten Isaan gems (some on cassette, too), with the added bonus of a shelf of post-rock and pop-punk releases. Big Tiger also makes regular appearances at pop-up markets like Made by Legacy and Cheeze. Good for: Thai roots music Chatuchak Market, Section 5. IG: Bigtiger_36

Bryter Layter Named after a classic album from 60s folk singer Nick Drake, this hidden-away store is owned by the same folks behind the hip vintage store The Trapeze Swingers on Phra Arthit. Crate-diggers will find old vinyl, mostly jazz, blues and soul, with names like Coltrane and Coleman figuring prominently, as well as 80s-90s Thai pop and an interesting selection of old books. Good for: Old jazz and blues, from as little as B100 Arun Amarin Rd., 086-332-1045. www.fb.com/BryterLayterCafe

Hall of Fame Records Here you’ll find both secondhand and new vinyl from local and international artists. There’s a big focus on the classics, from American metal band Megadeth through to Jimi Hendrix, Bee Gees and The Beatles. Secondhand turntables from Pioneer also available from B8,000. Good for: Prog-rock 2/F, Thanya Shopping Park, Srinakarin Rd., 081-844-9709. www. hofrecord.lnwshop.com

Heaven & Hell Record Shop This longstanding stall in section 22 of Chatuchak has serviced the needs of Bangkok’s vinyl-loving metal-heads for some 15 years. There are also plenty of CDs, cassettes, T-shirts and, well, more soothing sounds on offer, too. Good for: Metal, drone Chatuchak Market, Section 22 Soi 7, 081-330-0307 and 089-132-3474. www.fb.com/Heaven.Hell.Record.Shop

Hidden Tracks Records From Terminal 21 to Thonglor to Samut Prakan, this record store keeps moving further from the city center. Thankfully, you can still order online—and the selection’s still very impressive, spanning all the currently hyped electro, indie-pop, rock and r ‘n’ b acts, plus some welcome reissues. They also stock some portable players from Crosley and Numark. Good for: Contemporary cult movie soundtracks, from Drive to Blue Valentine 8/209 Supalai Ville, Soi Sridan 3, Srinakarin Road, 085-970-0076. www. fb.com/hiddentracksrecords

The Reco Room

NEW!

With its bare brick, raw wood and cement, this stylishly turned out recent addition to Ekamai Mall looks more like a cafe than a record store. The funk and jazz-focused vinyl collection features plenty of Miles Davis, Marvin Gaye and Gil Scott-Heron. As for audio set-ups, you won’t find any faux-vintage Crosley players here; this stuff’s the real deal. We dig the old-school amplifiers, though these don’t come cheap. Good for: Blue Note Records reissues Ekamai Mall, 3 Ekkamai Soi 10, 085-322-5403. ow.ly/KXYEc

Record Hunter Record Hunter offers up a very wide range of secondhand vinyl covering everything from pop, rock, jazz and blues to heavy metal, thrash and reggae, with an emphasis on rare and limited items. Good for: Japanese pressings of your favorite rock records

Christian Hogue

Stocks both CDs and vinyl, secondhand and new, including collectable box sets from the likes of The Smiths and The Beatles. The vinyl side focuses on indie-rock albums from hot new international bands plus some selected local artists. Secondhand from B500 and new from B800.

Good for: Mainstream rock and pop

The Reco Room

Until the end of May, chef Edoardo Bonavolta of Luce Italian restaurant in Eastin Grand Sathorn presents a menu of raw vegan cuisine in addition to the restaurant’s regular menu. Each of the dishes is prepared using temperatures no higher than 42 degrees Celsius to preserve all the ingredients’ natural nutrients. Singapore-based restaurant booking service Chope has now arrived in Bangkok. The service promises to make it easier to book restaurants online, taking your details and communicating directly with the venue. Already well established in Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing, Chope is launching here exclusively through restaurants which made it into BK Magazine’s Top Tables 2015 fine dining guide. Presently, you can only access the Bangkok Chope booking page through the Top Tables website (bk.asia-city.com/toptables) or by visiting restaurant reviews on bkmagazine.com.

This new joint ticks two huge Bangkok food trend boxes: it’s in Sala Daeng, it serves barbecue. Good Neighbour is meant to evoke a garden party grill, serving six-hour slow-smoked ribs, burgers (B250) and grilled cheese (B170) in an actual back yard every Friday and Saturday night. Sides include the Mexican corn and kale Caesar salad (both B80) and slow-roasted veggies (B100). There are a few cocktails available too, all at B220, as well as draft Leo beer (B150). Or go for the adult happy meal deal, which gets you a burger, a beer and fries for B400. But you might need to get there quick. This experimental pop-up says it’s only going to hang around until the end of April. And don’t worry if it rains—they have some indoor tables as a plan B. Soi Sala Daeng, 097-285-9454. BARS

By the Glass

Not in the mood for a whole bottle? These eight places have some of Bangkok’s best options for wine by the glass. By Vasachol Quadri L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon

Appia One of the owners of this Roman-style restaurant owns a vineyard while another is a partner of boutique wine importers It’s Riesling. As such, the wine list is excellent, focusing mainly on organic village-made bottles that represent good value-for-money. Best choice by the glass: Arranged by body (light, medium and full), the large selection of red starts with Montepulciano (B240) from Italy up to Cotes du Rhone (B300) from France, while the shorter white list includes Vermentino (B230) and Basa Blanco (B280). 20/4 Sukhumvit Soi 31, 02-261-2056. O p e n Tu e - S u n 6 : 3 0 -1 1 p m a n d S u n 11:30am-2:30pm

L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon Surprisingly, the super-high-end French fine-dining restaurant has some sub-B500 but world-class wines, picked by sommelier Benoit Bigot with a focus on biodynamic bottles from all parts of the world. Best choice by the glass: Valdicava Rossa di Montalcino DOC 2012 (B450/glass). This Tuscan red has a smooth and supple texture with a taste that hints at dried herbs and cherries. The other touted selections by the glass are the 2012 VDP des Cotes Catalanes, Passion Blanche (B400/glass) for white and 2010 Ventoux (B360/glass) for red. 5/F, Mahanakorn Cube, 96 Narathiwat Ratchanakarin Rd., 02-001-0698.

Cinema Winehouse Nestled in the old town, this colonial-style shop-house is both a brunch spot and free screening lounge. It also features a carefully selected wine list focused on small producers mostly from Italy which rotates regularly. Best choice by the glass: The house wines start from B90/glass while Cotes du Rhone and Coteaux d’Aix en Provence come in at B140/glass. 59/61, Samsen Rd. 096-465-6526. 083-5540170

Grand Hyatt Erawan Both the gentleman’s club-like Tables and the more casual Bar @494 are well known

18

among wine lovers for their appealing prices. Bar @494 offers a selection of wine by the glass which starts at just B199, suited to drinkers who want to explore new bottles without paying a premium. Tables, meanwhile, boasts a more fine-dining atmosphere but still has some top-rated labels for around B300, including some great Old World bottles (still quite a rarity at this price point). Best choice by the glass: Our picks from Bar @494 are Lindeman’s Henry’s Sons Shiraz-Cabernet (B199/glass) from the Hunter Valley in Australia for red, and St. UrbansHof’s Urban Riesling (B299) from Mosel in Germany for white. At Tables, the Isole E Olena Chianti Classico DOCG 2012 (B460/ glass) is a medium-bodied red wine with refreshing citrusy and spicy notes, while Schlossgut Diel’s Riesling Kabinett (B480/ glass) from Nahe in Germany is recommended for white. Grand Hyatt Erawan, 494 Rachdamri Rd., 02-254-1234

The Okura Prestige Sommelier Marc Bittner oversees the cellar at this Japanese five-star hotel, and keeps it well stocked with interesting old and new world wines that are a rung above many other hotel offerings. The same list is available at all three of the hotel’s outlets— Yamazato, Elements and Up and Above. The latter has particularly enticing happy hours from 5-7pm, when you can claim a 20-percent discount. Best choice by the glass: For red, Chateau Gonet-Medeville, Cru Monplaisir (B450/glass) from Bordeaux, France. The Okura Prestige Bangkok, Park Ventures Ecoplex, 57 Wireless Rd., 02-687-9000. BTS Ploenchit.

Peppina After the success of Appia, chef Paolo Vitaletti moved around the corner to serve up the most authentic Neapolitan pizza in Bangkok. The wine list is short and sweet, starting from B1,300 a bottle with much of it under B2,000. Most are organic village-made bottles from France and Italy. Though the wine comes from the same distributor as Appia, 90 percent of the list is different.

Best choice by the glass: White starts with Villa Caterina Grigio (B250) from Italy and Luneau Papin Plarres Blanche (B250) from France. The recommended reds include Maswel Badfola (B240) and Le Volte by Ornellaia (B280), both Italian. There’s only one sparkling option by the glass, Zardetto Prosecco Brut (B240), also Italian.

Cinema Winehouse

27/1 Sukhumvit Soi 31, 02-119-7677

Wine Pub Wine Pub at Pullman Bangkok King Power Hotel was one of the first specialty wine bars in the city. Thanks to its Vinoteca machine, a grand wine dispenser which preserves the flavor of open bottles, it also serves a whopping 48 different wines by the glass. This means it’s one of the few places that offers really premium wine without needing to buy the bottle. Best choice by the glass: Highlights include Chateau de Lestange’s Cabernet Sauvignon (B275/glass), for medium-to-full bodied red, and Wairau River’s Sauvignon Blanc for white (B295/glass). Sparkling options include Prosecco Private Cuvee (B175/glass) all the way up to Louis Roederer Brut (B700/glass).

This casual European restaurant is backed by some serious wine guys, which is reflected in a well-curated wine list. One of the partners is Kim Wachtveitl, who owns boutique wine importer Wine Garage and also hosts the monthly wine tasting events at the Hive (Piman 49, 40/9 Sukhumvit Soi 49, 02-6626062). Most of the list comes from the old world—France, Italy and Spain. Best choice by the glass: Red by the glass start from B230 with choices like Merlot de la Chapelle, France, and Mourvedre Blend Epistem No. 3. The white, too, starts from B230 with three varietals—Albarino from Spain, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay from Australia. Sukhumvit Soi 45. 02-662-4478. Mon-Fri 11-1am, Sat-Sun 10:30-1am Peppina

ROUND UP

Super Dry Where to get the best dry-cured ham in Bangkok from Europe’s top-four ham-producing nations. By Natcha Sanguankiattichai

Pop-Up Charcuterie Pop-Up Charcuterie

Spain

Two of the most popular hams right now are from Spain: the jamon serrano (serrano ham) and jamon iberico (iberico ham). While serrano ham is made from ordinary white pig, Iberico ham comes from the eponymous black Iberian pig—or at least pigs with 75-percent black Iberian blood, also known as pata negra (black hooves). It is not just the breed that matters, the curing time and pig treatment effects the grade of the ham. The finest is jamon Iberico de bellotta, which is made from free-range, acorn-only-fed pigs and cured for at least three years. Eat here: Tapas Y Vino (2/F, Grand Millennium Sukhumvit Bangkok, 30 Sukhumvit Soi 21 (Asoke), 02-204-4158) is one of the few hotels that actually serves genuine Iberico ham. Try the jamon Iberico plate (B750/30g) or the chef’s salad (B350). You can also now find it on supermarket shelves thanks to Iberico’s (www. fb.com/myiberico), a new brand available at selected Villa Markets (try J Avenue) as well as via Passion Delivery (www.passiondeliver.com). A package of 48-month-cured jamon iberico de bellotta is priced at B1,320/80g while serrano is just B260/80g.

Italy The Italian term prosciutto means cured ham made from the hind legs of a pig. Prosciutto di Parma (aka Parma ham) and prosciutto di San Daniele (both PDO-certified, see box) are among the most popular Italian prosciutto crudo (raw ham). They are both dry cured, bone-on, and seasoned only with sea salt, which results in mild flavor. Pigs for Parma ham are fed with grains and whey from Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese production, resulting in the creamy texture and sweet flavor. Also from Northern Italy, prosciutto bazzone from Tuscany yields more aroma thanks to spices used in the curing process. Eat here: One of Lenzi Tuscan Kitchen’s (Ruam Rudi Soi 2, Wireless Rd., 02-001-0116) talking points is the prosciutto sourced from chef Francesco Lenzi’s uncle’s small-scale ham curing business back

in Italy. The Tagliere del Lenzi (B790) offers an excellent selection of meats and cheese including culatello della garfagnana and lardo. Pizza Pala Romana’s (1/F, CP Tower, 313 Silom Rd., 02-6383440) deli section also has some prosciutto starting at B270/100g.

France Jambon de Bayonne (ham from Bayonne in Southwest France, PGI) comes from pigs fed with organic maize and cereals that must be grown on farms in the same region. The ham has to go through at least seven months of dry curing, while regional spices like Espelette pepper give jambon de Bayonne a totally unique flavor. Eat here: Pop-Up Charcuterie (Anantara Siam Bangkok, 155 Rajadamri Rd., 02-126-8866) offers a range of hams, sausages and cheese from France, Italy and Spain including jambon de Bayonne (starting at B180) with wine pairing available.

Iberico’s

Germany Though most German hams are cooked, the country also produces two popular, smoked varieties of boneless dry-cured ham, known as rohschinken (raw ham). Schwarzwälder Schinken (Black Forest ham, PGI) is cold smoked over pine wood for several days and left to mature for just several weeks. The result is a signature black rim and intense, spicy and smoky flavor. While Black Forest ham is deboned before it’s salted, Westphalian ham, from Northeastern Germany, remains on the bone until the end of maturation, when it is smoked over beech wood and juniper twigs. Eat here: Black Forest ham with pickles and brown bread (B390) and Strammer Max (German bread with Black Forest ham and fried eggs, B260) are both served at Deutsches Eck (Sukhumvit Soi 20, 081-814-1173). Also try Bei Otto (1 Sukhumvit Soi 20, 02-2600869), the longstanding German food institution, for takeaway Black Forest ham (B140/18g).

Tapas Y Vino

What is dry-cured ham? Unlike the cooked, wet-cured ham you normally find at supermarkets, drycured ham is produced by curing a pig’s hind leg in a mixture of salt (and sometimes spices) to draw all the liquid from the meat. OPEN DOOR

Abbot This casual diner brings a taste of Cali chic to Bangkok. The buzz: Parts of the team formerly behind the legendary Bed Supperclub are back with a slew of new restaurant projects, and the first cab off the rank is Abbot. Taking its inspiration from the coastal Abbot-Kinney Boulevard in Los Angeles, California, the restaurant goes for that region’s renowned blend of casual yet refined dining. And they take their bar seriously, too. The decor: Casual, natural and laid-back, this decor is as Carlifornian as the menu. The arched ceiling and mezzanine are complemented by a bare concrete floor, dangling light bulbs, canvas-upholstered low chairs and wooden tables. A sizable bar, which can seat around 10 people, sits next to the stairs to the mezzanine, boasting chic wooden shelving. While the low tables of the ground floor can make it hard to have a proper

20

meal, there are a few dining tables up on the mezzanine as well as a private room. The food and drinks: The kitchen cooks up a light and fresh California-inspired menu that’s focused mainly on seafood and vegetable dishes featuring some intriguing ingredients. The whole beetroot roast and friends salad (B120), for example, is dressed with raspberry kombucha (from Chinatown’s Pure Luck brewery). Appetizers such as the lightly-seasoned goat cheese fritter on a bed of roasted eggplant are B150 each but you can order three smaller portions for B98 each. Mains span both surf and turf with the likes of wagyu skirt steak (B1,250/250g) and the grilled deviled wild Pacific salmon (B645). The bar is led by Noppasate Hirunwathit, who used to work at Lady Brett. Here,

he creates a list of California-inspired cocktails including the 310 Spritz (strawberry-rhubarb reduction, fresh orange, Chandon Brut NV, B330). A selection of Californian wines is also available, starting at B310 a glass. Why you should care: If you’re on a workout program or following the clean food trend, Abbot makes a logical choice for your cheat day due to the menu’s emphasis on light dishes. They’ve also just launched an appealing Sunday brunch deal at B850 for 13 courses plus live acoustic music. Natcha Sanguankiattichai 253/2 Sukhumvit Soi 31, 02-258-6250. NEW AND NOTED

Street Eat

While food stalls may be disappearing from the streets of Hong Kong, Bangkok's just welcomed a new restaurant claiming to serve original dai pai dong-style dishes, specifically wonton noodles. Occupying a shop-house in the middle of Thonglor, Gokfayuen (161/7, Thonglor Soi 9, 02-712-5779. www.facebook.com/wuntunmeen) boasts a rather retro silver-and-white theme. The brief menu specializes in late-night drinking food like wonton meen (B79), chinese kale topped with lard and oyster sauce (B79), char siu (barbecue pork, B139), char siu noodle with or without soup (B89), and dried shrimp roe noodle with oyster sauce (B89).

Culture Clash

The team behind Moose and the sorely missed Cosmic Cafe has taken a more polished route with the King Rama V-themed R.E. 234. The name refers to the Rattanakosin Era, when Western cultural influences really began to spread in Thailand. This is

reflected in the colonial-inspired decor and Thai and European dishes like srang wa goong (broiled shrimp salad, B280) and massaman gai (B240) through to avocado salad (B220) and a variety of pizza (B240-340). There's also live jazz every Fri-Sat and valet parking.

Modern Med'

Garibaldis (Somerset Lake Point Tower A, 41 Sukhumvit Soi 16, 02-262-0835. garibaldisbangkok.com) is a modern Mediterranean restaurant and bar with an industrial yet colorful interior. Dishes come from France, Italy and Spain and include the likes of asparagus soup with a variety of seafood (B260), haloumi salad (grilled dry cheese with beetroot, pine nuts and orange B290), risotto porcini with pan-fried pigeon (B540), and spinach and ricotta cheese ravioli with truffle cream sauce and egg yolk (B440). For dessert, you can order blackberry strudel with vanilla ice cream (B230) or classic tiramisu (B250). Note: they also have lunch specials which change monthly. Dharath Hoonchamlong

This classic Hainanese chicken restaurant chain has been packing in the crowds for more than 30 years in Singapore, and last year opened this restaurant in Bangkok. The simple, subtly Chinese decoration remains similar to the mother branch—checkered tablecloths and some round tables with lazy Susans. The signature dish is, you guessed it, khao mun gai (B110/set, chicken alone at B90-590) that comes with three different dipping sauces (chili, sweetened black soy sauce and ginger), while other highlights include the crispy tao hu tord (deep-fried tofu, B160) and pork spare ribs (B160). The Great Kabab Factory HHHH

Indian. L/F, Majestic Grande Hotel, 12 Sukhumvit Soi 2, 02-262-2999. Open daily 11am-4pm, 6-11pm. BBB-BBBB. F

This Indian franchise offers a fairly new fine-dining experience for Bangkok: the chef creates a daily-rotating set menu comprising mostly Indian kababs, which you can tuck into all-you-can-eat style. You don’t have to order or go get your food from a buffet line; all you have to do is choose between the vegetarian (B1,200) and non-vegetarian (B1,300) options. While the setting, with its shiny tile floors and blue lights, feels like a lonely hotel lobby, the food is very traditional—kababs, dal, naan and biryani—and the service feels warm and personalized. Diners sit at their tables while a small army of waiters carry over tray after tray from the open kitchen. The first course comprises six kinds of kababs, each served in rational portions which leave you enough space to ask for more of your favorites. On our last visit, we particularly liked the interesting texture and flavor of the khatte bharwan aloo (potatoes

Mono+Mono arrived in Bangkok late last year surrounded by hype. This was largely due to the name, which comes from a hugely popular Korean-style fried chicken restaurant in New York’s East Village that burned down in 2013. True to those roots, Mono+Mono Bangkok has a distinctly New York City vibe, with tables made from black metal piping, Tolix chairs and the obligatory subway tiles, as well as plenty of air plants and medicine bottles. It all comes together nicely but is a bit boring and uncreative, much like the menu. Aside from Korean fried chicken and gua bao (buns), the food is all about fried things like onion rings (B60), fish and chips (B245) and calamari

stuffed with little chunks of cheese and nuts), the firm gulnari paneer tikka (rose petal flavored cottage cheese), mildly flavored murgh tikka kali mirch (black pepper flavored boneless chicken) and kashmiri jheenga (red chili flavored prawns). The galouti kabab (minced lamb patty), on the other hand, is a bit too creamy in texture to really taste of anything. A vegetarian option like the subz galouti kabab (minced yam and lentil patty) is much more exciting. Some other kababs are rather intense: the tandoori mushroom and the lamb ribs are way too salty, while the fried fish and pineapple skewer are so spicy that the four sauces (mint, yogurt, tomato and tamarind) offer little respite. We certainly can’t fault the freshness of these kababs, though, which are served piping hot and don’t seem to have been left standing for too long. After finishing your first course, you get your plate changed, and naan bread and biryani are served with two lentil stews (neither of which were too memorable for us). While we prefer the more balanced spices of the vegetarian biryani over the chicken variety, this course is a bit of a let-down following the full-flavored kababs. The traditional Indian desserts like kala jamun and various kesari kulfi (saffron ice cream) are wellexecuted, but your enjoyment will be determined by your tolerance for sweetness and how much room you’ve got left. The service is great, the atmosphere surprisingly welcoming and the food plentiful, but ultimately The Great Kabab Factory is an intriguing if not wholly ecstatic experience. (B175), plus a few sad-sounding salads— the only one we’re drawn to is the softshell crab (B175). Even the fried chicken (20-wing party set, B495; 14-wing large set, B375; 8-wing medium set, B215; and 5-wing small set, B155) doesn’t compare to BonChon, Bangkok’s other New Yorkborn Korean fried chicken name. We find not just the chicken at BonChon tastier, but also the garlic sauce, which is less sweet than Mono+Mono’s. That said, we prefer the salty tang to Mono’s spicy sauce. As for the gua bao, they too don’t deliver on much other than looks. The crispy deep-fried soft shell crab bao (B195, plus B30 with fries and pickles) lacks flavor, both in the crab itself and the bun, which is only saved by a sweet mayo sauce and nice texture. The pork belly bao (B155, plus B20 with fries and pickles) is also unpleasant. Though the braised pork itself melts in the mouth, the sauce is just so salty that it ruins the taste. Sides such as the smoked salmon salad (B175) and fried calamari (B175) are OK but nothing memorable. Mono+Mono pulls off a nice vibe, and we’d say it was worth an after-work drink if the booze options were better (Heineken on tap is all they offer, B100). Service is good and prices are pretty budget, but in this city’s fast-paced junk food scene, it struggles to keep up.

ESSENTIAL EAMES: ICONS OF 20TH CENTURY DESIGN

The exhibition: The life and work of the quirky American design couple Charles and Ray Eames is structured based on the book An Eames Primer, written by their grandson Eames Demetrios. Though best known for their revolutionary molded plastic chair and lounge chair—dubbed “the greatest design of the 20th century” by Time magazine—the couple also made major contributions in the fields of architecture and fine art. Inside, you’ll be taken through their life history, ideas and working philosophy as committed problem-solvers in design and production. You get to see hundreds of photographs from their family collection, watch short films that they produced, see samples of their other exhibitions, and view over 90 pieces of Eames furniture.

Why you should see it: There’s a good reason why this traveling exhibition has enjoyed immense success all over Asia, from Tokyo to Hong Kong and Singapore. For Thai designers and fans of the Eames, this is the perfect opportunity to find out more about other aspects of their work and projects which are equally impressive. Even if you haven’t got a clue who they are, you may still go home feeling inspired by their story. Runs through May 31

THAI NEOTRADITIONAL ART

The exhibition: It features the work of six award-winning Thai art masters, including Professor Chalermchai Kositpipat, National Artist in Visual Arts 2010, and Panya Vijinthanasarn, National Artist in Visual Arts 2014, who originally painted the beautiful imagery on the walls of London’s well-known Buddhist temple, the Buddhapadipa Temple, in 1987. Many of these Buddhist paintings, drawings and sculptures have been created using Western techniques, and are stylistically different from traditional Thai artwork, yet are still recognizable as resolutely Thai. There’s also a book under the same title available for purchase at the MOCA Shop. Why you should see it: These colorful masterpieces are not your average Buddhist paintings. It’s worth perusing three floors of MOCA to see these vibrant artworks, so instrumental in developing a new style of Thai Buddhist art that appeals to international audiences. BANGKOK SONGKRAN Summer’s here! If you’re sticking around Bangkok, here are some tips on the city’s top splash spots.

ORIGINAL: Silom From Dusit Thani all the way to Narathiwat intersection, Silom Road is guaranteed to be crowded during Songkran as it’s one of the two officially designated areas for Bangkok water-splashing between Apr 12-14 this year. QUICK BITES: Especially for the festival period, there will be 200 stalls offering food and drinks for you to refuel, as well as gear for your water fights. EVENTS: Head over to W Bangkok, only a stop away at BTS Chong Nonsi, on Apr 11 for its annual Songkran Splash Away Pool Party, in collaboration with the busy party collective Kolour.

Silom

NOTE: Fans of DJ Station and the likes, stay on till nightfall and head over to Silom Soi 4, where the crowd goes wild in front of Tapas Bar. Don’t forget that the roads will be shut from 2-8pm, so stick to the BTS/ MRT.

NOTE: There’s a strict no powder policy to prevent any possible harassment in the area, so stick to your water guns, guys.

OLD TOWN: Phra Nakhon

Every year, the streets around Siam Square get packed with teenagers toting water guns. The square at CentralWorld is taken over by M2F Bangkok Songkran Festival 2015, which will be divided into four zones: Toy, Water, Food and Foam Party.

Another hotspot for Songkran lies in the heart of the Old Town. Khao San Road shuts off completely to make way for the opening parade on Apr 13, and a huge stage for live performances throughout the duration of the festival. The nearby Suan Santichaiprakarn public park on Phra Athit Road also hosts Traditional Songkran in Banglumpoo for those who wish to make merit or just enjoy traditional Thai music performances.

(23 Phra Athit Rd., 02-633-5000). If you’ve made your way down through Khao San Road, you can stop by day-time hideout Fabulous Bar & Dessert (32 Khao San Rd., 02-629-1144), and the original outdoor Bombay Blues (Soi Rambutri, 095-5201515) down the relatively quiet Soi Rambutri at night. EVENTS: This Apr 13-15, the Water Festival 2015 takes place throughout seven riverside venues, with free water transportation provided between Wat Arun, Wat Pho, Wat Prayoon, Wat Kalayanamitr and community malls Tha Maharaj, Yodpiman Riverwalk and Asiatique the Riverfront. For late-night parties, just stay put on Khao San.

HIDEOUTS: While lots of place are shut during the Songkran holiday on Phra Athit Road, you can still grab a few cocktails by the river at Babble & Rum at Riva Surya

CENTRAL: Siam Square & CentralWorld

COOL TREATS: Siam’s got of heaps of new icy treats to try this summer, like the fluffy ice-shaved bingsu ice cream at Seobinggo (Siam Square Soi 7, 095-712-4872) or the customizable ice dessert at Once (228/2 Siam Square Soi 2). In the mood for some chocolate? Magnum Pleasure Store just made a return to 1/F, Siam Paragon, 991/1 Rama 1 Rd.

Convention Center, Centara Grand, this year on Apr 10-12. If you haven’t got tickets yet, they will be available at the door on the night.

NIGHT TIME: RCA Notorious for its night-time water fights, RCA will be awash with Bangkok’s sexiest partygoers from 6pm-2am. Expect countless parties happening at pretty much every club—from the beginning to the end of the soi. EVENTS: Get a dose of EDM at the four-day Pepsi S20 Songkran’s Official Electronic Dance Music Festival, held at the brandnew S20 Factory from Apr 11-14, with epic performances by the likes of Krewella, Afrojack and deadmau5. Live Bangkok is also hosting Elektro Liquid Festival on Apr 11, featuring Berlin DJs Fritz Kalkbrenner and Alex Rath on the main stage, and lots of local DJs in the outdoor party area. NICHE SPOTS: For something different before the parties begin, you can see the Korean Broadway Nanta Show (RCA Plaza Building, 02-641-4407-10) at 8pm. Tickets during Songkran (Apr 11-15) come with a complimentary drink at Gaso Bar & Bistro (RCA Block E, 087-664-4500). NOTE: Hands down, Route 66 pulls the biggest crowd, and it celebrates this year with the Songkran Summer Fest 2015 from Apr 11-16. But if you’re not too keen on the MET 107 stuff, try Beer Cap for rock tunes and craft beers.

EVENT: gCircuit’s world-famous Song Kran 9 gay parties are being held at Bangkok

FREEWILL ASTROLOGY ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Uitwaaien is a Dutch word that means to go out for a stroll in windy weather simply because it’s exhilarating. I don’t know any language that has parallel terms for running in the rain or singing at full volume while riding alone in an elevator in the mad-happy quest to purge your tension. But in the coming weeks, you don’t need to describe or explain experiences like this; you just need to do them. Give your instinctive need for exuberance room to play.

T HE 100-Y EA R-O L D M A N W H O CLIMBED OUT THE WINDOW AND DISAPPEARED (FELIX HERNGREN, 2013) An old man escapes from a nursing home and finds a suitcase full of cash, which leads him on an unexpected journey involving several murders.

GEMINI (May 21-Jun 20): When he was in his 50s, French painter Claude Monet finally achieved financial success. He used his new riches to buy a house and land, then hired gardeners to help him make a pond full of water lilies. During the next 30 years, they were his obsession. He made them a central feature of 250 canvases, which now serve as one of his signature contributions to art history. “I planted my water lilies for pleasure,” he said. “I cultivated them without thinking of painting them. And then suddenly, I had the revelation of the magic of my pond.” The imminent future is a good time for you to do something similar, Gemini: Create or find a source of beauty that will stimulate your sense of wonder and fuel your passion to express yourself. CANCER (Jun 21-Jul 22): “Everything we do in life is based on fear, especially love,” said Cancerian comedian Mel Brooks. Although he was joking, he was also quite serious. More often than we like to admit, desperation infects our quest to be cared for. It’s a fundamental human problem, so there’s no reason to be ashamed if you have this tendency yourself. Having said that, I’m happy to report that you now have the necessary power to overcome this tendency. You will be able to summon tremendous courage as you revise and refine your relationship with love. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Do you ever feel reverence and awe, Leo? Is there anyone or anything that evokes your admiration, humility, and gratitude? The coming weeks will be a good time to seek out experiences like these. According to my reading of the astrological omens, you will get tender jolts of transformational inspiration if you blend yourself with a sublime force that you trust and respect.

Swedish Film Festival 2015

Stockholm Stories

TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Your nasty, nagging little demon isn’t nasty or nagging any more. It’s not doing what demons are supposed to do. It’s confused, haggard, and ineffective. I almost feel sorry for the thing. It is barely even keeping you awake at night, and its ability to motivate you through fear is at an all-time low. Here’s what I suggest: Now, when the demon’s strength is waning, you should break up with it for good. Buy it a one-way bus ticket to the wasteland.

Ego

EGO (LISA JAMES LARSSON, 2013) When a womanizer loses his eyesight, he must re-examine what actually matters to him and what’s superficial.

HOTELL (LISA LANGSETH, 2013) Erika’s perfect life has fallen apart. She starts group therapy and checks into various hotels in an effort to find anonymity.

THE REUNION (ANNA ODELL, 2013) After not receiving an invitation to her school reunion, a famous artist shoots a film about what might have happened if she’d gone and confronted her former nemeses. Free entry. Movies are in Swedish with English subtitles. SF World Cinema. 7/F, CentralWorld, 02-2688888. BTS Chit Lom.. www.sfcinemacity.com

VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): A lot has happened since you were…uh… indisposed. You’ve missed out on several plot twists. Rumors have been flying, allegiances have been shifting, and riddles have been deepening. So are you ready yet to return to the heated action? Have you learned as much as you can from the commotion that provoked your retreat? Don’t try to return too early. Make sure you are at least 70 percent healed. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 22): Rent, but don’t buy yet. That’s my $250-per-hour advice. Keep rehearsing, but don’t start performing the actual show. OK? Flirt, but don’t fall in love. I swear to you that your burning questions will ultimately be answered if you don’t try to force the answers to arrive according to a set timetable. I guarantee that you will make the necessary connections as long as you don’t insist that they satisfy every single one of your criteria.

SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21): The Guerrilla Girls are a group of prankster activists who use humor to expose sexism and racism in the art world. Every so often they take a “weenie count” at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. During their first survey in 1989, they found that five percent of the artists who had work hanging in the galleries were women, while 85 percent of the nudes depicted in the paintings were women. More recently, in 2012, their weenie count revealed that four percent of the artists were female, but 76 percent of the naked people in the paintings were female. The coming week would be a good time for you to take a weenie count in your own sphere, Scorpio. Conditions are favorable to call attention to gender disparities. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): The English term “engine” refers primarily to a machine that transforms energy into mechanical power. But its roots are in the old French word engin, which meant skill or wit, and in the Latin word ingenium, defined as “inborn talent.” According to my reading of the astrological omens, your “engine” is unusually strong right now, which means that your cultivated skills and innate talents are functioning at peak levels. I suggest you make intensive use of them to produce maximum amounts of energy and gather more of the clout you’d love to wield. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): What I’m about to say is not a hard scientific fact, but it is a rigorous poetic fable. You don’t need to go to the mountain, because the mountain is willing and able to come to you. But will it actually come to you? Yes, but only if you meet two conditions. The mountain will pick itself up and move all the way to where you are if you make a lot of room for it and if you are prepared to work with the changes its arrival will bring. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): If you were a fouryear-old, cookies might be a valuable treasure to you. Given a choice between a bowl of stir-fried organic vegetables and a plate full of chocolate coconut macarons, you’d probably choose the macarons. For that matter, if you were four years old and were asked to decide between getting a pile of macarons and a free vacation to Bali , you’d also opt for the cookies. But since you’re a grownup, you would never get distracted by a sugary, transitory treat. Right? PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): On June 23, 1917, Babe Ruth was the starting pitcher for the Boston Red Sox in a Major League Baseball game against the Washington Senators. After the first batter drew a walk, Ruth got upset with the home plate umpire and punched him in the head. Ejected! Banished! The Babe had to be dragged off the field by the cops. The new pitcher was Ernie Shore. He proceeded to pitch a perfect game. In the coming weeks, Pisces, I see you as having the potential to duplicate Ernie Shore’s performance. Coming in as a replacement, you will excel.

last word

Tony Jaa From stuntman to internationally recognized actor, Tony Jaa, 39, recently made the great leap into Hollywood in the latest installment of the enduringly popular Fast and Furious franchise in cinemas now. Next up is a Thai-US collaboration, Skin Trade, about two detectives taking down human trafficking in Bangkok. Here, he discusses his lifelong debt to muay Thai, how Hollywood differs from Thai cinema and what it was like shooting alongside the late Paul Walker.

Muay Thai is an art. I have always been mesmerized by it. As boxers, we have a dance before every fight to worship the holy spirit of muay Thai, and our ancestors who practiced it. I present the art of Muay Thai to the world in the form of motion pictures. The iconic movements in muay Thai are universal. I spice them up with interesting plots and entertaining villains, ultimately so that audiences can experience the beauty of our traditional martial art. The three things that represent Thai people are our unique culture, religion and king. These are our legacy. I can feel it in every muay Thai gesture. When our country was at war, muay Thai was our weapon. We fought for our people, for our land to be independent and for the king. It’s shown on the walls of temples and historical sites all around the country.

My first vivid memory from childhood is going to an outdoor screening of Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee films. For a kid in the countryside, it was completely mind-blowing. I dreamed of being just like them. I began with analyzing their movements. But I realized my muay Thai moves were something unique; I was glad to inherit these skills. I learn from my pain. Most people thought it absurd when I told them I wanted to become a movie star. But I was raised to think positively, so I kept pushing myself in training, ignoring the negative comments. Every day I go to work I imagine the world as a big school where I can experiment with new stuff and learn from the people I work with. I like to take risks. I’ve jumped through flames, ridden on an elephant’s back and fought 80 stuntmen in one longtake action scene. It’s physically painful but also rewarding.

Hollywood is a factory. I have seen how the dreams of movie producers, writers and actors are manufactured, delicately and systematically. It’s totally different from what we’re doing here in Thailand. CGI is everything there and most of the time they d o n ’ t wa n t you to experiment with something new that might lead you to hurt yourself.

My trademark is real live action. Not computer-generated muscles. I talked with James Wan [the director], who’s fond of authentic action. That’s why I got the part in Furious 7.

I learn from my pain.

Vin Diesel warmly welcomed me with a big hug. He said he’d been waiting to meet me ever since he saw me in Ong-Bak [2013]. It’s all about building your own iconic character. Everybody starts off playing a small role and later forges their trademark, like his characters in the Fast and Furious and Riddick franchises.

One scene I shared with Paul Walker required all my experience. All my moves had to be perfectly timed to land in the right place. Paul and I practiced for two weeks and on the final cut we filmed from nine in the morning till three in the morning the next day. It was the most difficult scene I have ever done. Friendship has no boundaries. My upcoming movie, Skin Trade, is a collaborative project between a Thai

company and Hollywood actors. We’re enriching each other through working together. There are more opportunities for Thai people to work around the world than ever before. I want to see Hollywood in Thailand. I want to present the good parts of our country to the world: our beautiful culture, the taste of our food and the way Thai people behave. I want to bring more professional people here to film our country. I am proud to finally be seen as a role model. Knowing that there are many people admiring my work and waiting to see me kick the bad guy’s ass in movies is a fulfilling, recharging thought. Don’t be afraid. Dare to dream big and have the courage to follow your dream. More than anything, I’m proud to be Thai and to have the opportunity to show the bright side of our country on the world stage.
