Metropolitan Police ordered to memorize photos of superiors’ genitals All officers for the Bangkok Metropolitan Police have been ordered to remember by memory the genitalia of their superior officers and other important public officials. The move comes after Pol.Lt.Gen. Siridej Loetwatthanasakun, one of the city’s highest-ranking officers, complained that his short-time appointment at a Ratchada massage parlour was cut short by “over-zealous young police officers,” during a sting operation last week on suspected brothels. Pol.Lt.Gen. Siridej told reporters yesterday that officers failed to recognize him despite his repeated screams of “Don’t you know who I am?” and insisted more needed to be done to protect other high-ranking officials suffering similar indignities.

“Things can get pretty funky in those rooms,” he told reporters yesterday. “Clearly, facial recognition is not enough to stop this gross invasion of my privacy. Extra measures need to be taken to prevent the same thing happening to other lieutenants. Guys our age can’t just turn it on at will, you know.” Speaking to reporters yesterday, Pol.Lt.Gen. Siridej said the police officers should have been able to tell immediately that he was “a big deal,” winking as he said “big.”

upfront HOT OR NOT

Hot: Tall Thais

Not: Party dwarves

The owner of Maggie Choo’s was on Facebook the other day complaining that the club’s Theatre of Oddities night, aka his midget party, wasn’t working. And this week new Irish bar Drunken Leprechaun launched with a bevy of little people trussed up in green suits. Haven’t these people heard that using dwarves for entertainment is about as cool as advertising doughnuts with blackface? Meanwhile, the department of health has set a target to increase the average height of Thai men to 175cm within the next 10 years. Clearly, they don’t want the nation to be a seen as a bad party trick.

INTERVIEW

Hot: Chinese food

Not: Chinese tourists

www.facebook.com/gossipgirlthai

www.facebook.com/gossipgirlthai

We’re really beginning to get a taste for Chinese food now that it’s coming out of our favorite hipster chefs’ kitchens, like Opposite Mess Hall (ow.ly/PJBEf) and Little Beast (see page 20). Not that our visiting friends from China would know. The TAT just published the results of a poll asking their favorite places to eat in Bangkok. Top of the pile? Sirocco, followed by a stream of other tour bus-friendly spots you’re unlikely to see on any other list.

Hot: Cindy Burbridge Not: The rest of Gossip Girl’s cast With fake acting and shot-by-shot, copy-cat production, the pilot of Gossip Girl just about lived up to everyone’s expectations. But at least the casting crew got Lily Van Der Woodsen right. The winner of 1996 Miss Thailand World, Cindy Burbridge, was perfect in the role of a glamorous society mom. Sadly, none of the rest of the cast looked even half Thai, or had a clue how to act.

Hot: Parties

Not: Meet-ups

What happened to the days when you could just go out and have a good time? Now everything’s a networking event (see BK Now, page 34)—basically shorthand for shooting fingers and making small talk with people you either don’t know or want to see fail, gloriously.

Nude street artist Ronnachai “Peed” Kumsiri, 26, recently started a Facebook page this past June under the name Street Nude, Global Warming (on.fb.me/1TGNiB4). The Khon Kaen university graduate and his friends travel around Thailand to take nude photos amid natural and damaged environments, and then post them online with sassy captions in an attempt to stir debate about the ecological impacts of climate change. Here, he discusses his passion for ecology and how his confrontational artwork is viewed in Thailand. How did nudity become your preferred medium? It’s really easy and fast. If I see something worth shooting then I can just grab my phone and take the photos. No props. No makeup. No outfits. It’s just your pure self and nature. How did you start this project? I’ve always been interested in nature and have always been environmentally friendly. Two years ago I decided to go out into both natural and polluted places like garbage fields and contrast them with nudity. Tell us your work process. How do you pick a location? First I come up with the message I want to convey and then choose the location accordingly. Sometimes I just go wherever I want to and shoot my photos. Once I arrive at the location, I ask for permission from the nearby chaobaan (locals), then I have to wait for the perfect moment when

there are not a lot of people around to take my clothes off. It’s as easy as that. My photographer friends, Kittapong Chaiprathum and Nattavot Boonjuang, take the photos for me with either my iPhone or a full camera setup.

way they see fit. Some might see it as impactful and understand that I’m trying to send a message about global warming, but then there are definitely some conservatives that see it as obscene and choose to overlook the underlying message entirely.

With locals nearby, is it embarrassing?

Why global warming?

No. Well, my friends have seen every part of me so I’m definitely not embarrassed when I’m with them. But obviously it does get quite intimidating when there are people just staring from afar too. It must be difficult to be a nude artist in conservative Thailand. What problems have you encountered? Some people just see my work as salacious and obscene, but I can’t do anything about that. Being nude allows me to become closer to nature. It’s all about connecting people back to nature. People can take it any-

It’s a global conflict. Natural disasters in Thailand are so obvious. There are fewer winter days, longer summers and abnormal rainfall patterns. Who knows what will happen in the future if we don’t start taking action now. Thais can be ignorant of big global issues. I’m trying to generate more awareness. What are you working on next? My next photo will be taken at a khlong (canal). Eventually, I want to create an exhibition of the hundreds of photos I’ve taken and someday showcase them abroad. It depends if I can find sponsors though. Interview by Lalita Kittisrikangwan

cover story Beat the Rain

Still undecided where to go this long holiday? Here are our top picks for the rainy season around the country. By Pinnyada Tanitnon, Lily Kittisrikangwan and Monruedee Jansuttipan

TOP NORTHERN DESTINATION C H IANG MAI Rainy season in Chiang Mai usually consists of just light drizzle and short bursts of rain, making it an ideal escape from the tropical downpours of the south. Here are some of our top wet weather picks for the North.

Mae Sa Waterfall

THE GREAT FALLS The wet season is the best time for a trip to the waterfalls, as this is when they have the fullest bodies of water, while surrounding forests are at their greenest. The most impressive is Mae Sa Waterfall, with its drop descending over more than 10 tiers. The majority of visitors hang out around the bottom level, so if you want more privacy, just hike up a little further. If you’re lucky, you might even see elephants taking their baths in the bottom-most pool. Entrance is B200 per day. Easier to get to is Huay Kaew Falls, the ideal waterfall for a fuss-free picnic. Located on the bottom part of Doi Suthep, it consists of a high descent point that pours over a 50-meter rock slope that offers numerous spots to relax and cool off. Entrance is free, but make sure you pick up after yourself and throw away any trash. Don’t feel like preparing food? No problem. There are also restaurants you can visit that overlook the cascade, so you’ll be able to dine with a view too. Those who are up for a little more hiking, climb further up the same spot to the Monthathai Falls. Since they’re located in the national park area, there is a B200 entry fee— but this ensures they remain more secluded, and the ground up here is also more suited to picnicking. During the rainy season, the water gets high enough that those who don’t wish to get completely wet can hang out by the banks and comfortably dangle their legs in the water. What most people don’t know is that Monthathai Falls also carries the only path to a pretty hidden gem. If you’re physically in-shape, climb up to the waterfall’s third tier, then hike 40 minutes upwards on the trail above the drop. Here, you’ll find a separate little waterfall deep in the forest that a lot of people don’t know about. Don’t forget your Gopro, as you’ll be able to snap some rare footage of the spot at its most picturesque. Although smaller, the Bua Thong Falls have got to be crossed off any bucket list purely for their unique appearance. The water drops down a white limestone and sandstone cascade which has been naturally carved into steps that even let you walk up the fall. But be careful; some areas can be slippery. This spot is very popular during the rainy season, as the pool beneath can actually dry up completely during the scorching hot summer. Entrance is free, but bring your own refreshments.

Arttitude Gallery

STAY INDOORS

Arttitude Gallery

Thanks to Chiang Mai’s booming coffee and art scenes, there are plenty of reasons to visit the Northern capital for a city break alone. The recently opened Arttitude Gallery (Nimmanhaemin Rd., 052-002-202) introduces a new angle to Chiang Mai’s cafe scene by catering to health-conscious art lovers and replacing the coffee with 100-percent pure cold-press fruit juice. Each drink is named after famous paintings based on the flavor and color. Try their signature Monet Sunrise, consisting of carrot, passion fruit and pineapple, while admiring the displayed works of permanent and periodical exhibits. For coffee with a view, Ponganes Espresso (133/5 Ratchapakinai Rd., 052-089-569) wins hands down thanks to its setting amid the great outdoors. You’ll also be cooled by a natural breeze rather than air-con as you enjoy your quality cup of Joe. For a cozier, homier view, visit Rustic & Blue (Nimmanhaemin Soi 7, 098-495-7119), where you’ll find an adorable vibe similar to that of a Northern California flower farm. The cafe specializes in tea and food made from home-grown organic produce. The floor-to-ceiling windows provide a view of their well-kept garden while you dine. Go for afternoon tea and try their homemade cheeses paired with salami. And if it rains? Let it! It’ll just make for a prettier view.

cover story TOP NORTHEASTERN DESTINATION UBON RATCHATHANI When the rain comes, Isaan has abundant things to check out. On top of a host of cultural festivals, there are also some real natural wonders. Here’s where to head this season.

www.facebook.com/Chaicatawan

The Candle Festival Though every part of Thailand celebrates the Buddhist lent festival, Ubon Ratchathani can proudly boast that it has the most grandiose carved wax candle parade in the kingdom. As always, the event begins on Jul 29 at Thung Sri Muang, the vast pavilion in the city center, before setting off on a parade by car across the city. This year’s theme, Plern Hatthasilp Thin Khon Tham Thian “visiting candle maker communities,” lets spectators see close up how local artists create their magnificent wax candle sculptures. Among the 11 participating temples are Wat Bhurapa, Wat Sripradu, Wat Thung Sri Muang, Wat Liab and Wat Sri Ubon Rattanaram. Shutterbug tourists also stand the chance to win the TAT Ubon prize by submitting their photos from the event to the competition. Visit fb.com/tatubonfanpage (Thai language only) for more information. The deadline to submit pictures is Aug 7. On Jul 29-31, the town will also host the twin event International Wax Festival 2015, featuring more contemporary wax works under the theme The Light of Life. This event also takes place at Thung Sri Mueang. The entire festival runs through July 31.

You’ll need to set aside a full day for a roadtrip to Pha Taem National Park, but it’s worth it. Start by catching the first sunlight at Pha Chanadai, which also offers a panoramic view of the curve in the Mekong River. A 90-minute drive away you’ll find the natural wonder of Sao Chaliang, the site of giant rock pillars standing like mushrooms. Another nearby attraction is Pha Taem, where ancient paintings line the walls of a cliff next to another scenic Mekong River view. An hour further north, you can hide from the heat at the gorgeous Saeng Chan Waterfall where water and light flow simultaneously through a small hole in a cave wall.

During the seasonal shrimp parade at Kaeng Lamduan Waterfall, situated in Yod Dome Wildlife Sanctuary in Phu Jong Na Yoi National Park (045-210-706, dnp.go.th), tiny freshwater shrimp jump from the water and “walk” across the waterfall’s rocks in order to make it upstream to breed and lay eggs. The spectacle only appears at night on 4-5 occasions around late August through mid-September, when conditions are perfect and the pools are at their deepest. Check with the park before heading there. But even if you’re timing’s not good, you can still admire the beauty of Huay Luang Waterfall at its most spectacular. Book a stay at the national park (B600 for two people, and B1,200 for six people), which is 22 kilometers away from Kaeng Lamduan Waterfall.

Ubon people are well-known for their dessert addiction. In fact, nearly all of the hangout places in town are dessert-related, especially milk bars. Apart from the well-established Lek Nomsod (045-240-149), you’ll also find newer places like Nom Lamoon (080-430-0999, www.fb.com/nomlamoon) and Nom Noir (095-883-4383, www.fb.com/nomnoirubon). Another new contender is Charcoal Soymilk (095-451-5655, www.fb.com/ charcoalsoymilk), which just expanded from a night-time-only street stall to a proper cafe, sharing a space with the health-centric cafe Pals (try the super-thin-crust pizza made from light-flour crepe and the cold-pressed juice). CHIANG MAI

Legendary Noodles On first appearances, the newly-opened Manna Noodles and More (www.fb.com/ mannanoodles) may look like your typical noodle shop with plain white walls and a sliding glass door. However, locals have been anticipating the opening of this lunch and dinner place for over six years. Until seven years ago, the owner ran a tiny noodle shop renowned for the taste of its marinated meats and rich broth, before closing it down to follow other endeavors. Due to popular demand, though, the restaurant recently opened its doors again—this time in a bigger location with a slightly longer menu. By keeping the decor simple and the prices low, the owners say their old customers can relive the restaurant’s storied past. Try the signature noodle soup with marinated pork (B35) or slow-cooked beef (B45), each made according to secret recipes. The dish has been nicknamed kuay tiew luk krung (half-blooded noodles), due to its particularly herby aftertaste and aroma. Apart from noodle dishes, standouts on the menu include the signature marinated fried pork (B40), and boiled meats with special dipping sauce (B35-45), while they also sell homemade soft cookies (B10) and brownies (B10), made from scratch by the owner’s American wife.

NAKHON PATHOM

Storybook Adventure The 100-rai Woodland Project in Nakhon Pathom is also home to a beautiful, privately-owned museum known as Woodland Muang Mai (www. woodlandmuangmai.com). Based on the “woodmen tales” portrayed in thousands of intricate woodcarvings taken from the collection of owner Narong Thewphaingarm and his ancestors, the museum promises a spiritual and religious journey. Aside from the large collection of impeccably carved aged wood, you’ll also find the Woodland Village, where you can buy food and handcrafted souvenirs, and a wooden cathedral the owner claims is one of the largest in the world. Entrance for Thai adults is B300 and foreigners B650. Have some cool rooms? Email your news and promotions to travel@asia-city.co.th

The studio promises quick results after eight sessions of its ballet-inspired, barre-based, 57-minute workout, which combines intervals of cardio, strength training, stretching and recovery. reasons to dine at the Rabiangthong buffet

Salmon Sushi

Spread out across a mezzanine balcony, Narai Hotel’s massive buffet at the longstanding Rabiangthong restaurant focuses on quality ingredients and dishes freshly prepared at live cooking stations. Here are some of the highlights.

STEAMED BLUE CRABS Fresh from Surat Thani, these crabs are selected from the day’s catch and boiled up straight away. The process results in dense, fresh crabmeat bursting with aroma and taste.

THAI SOUPS Comforting and heartwarming recipes are cooked up each day, from Sukhothai noodles to classic tom yam with prawns or grouper, as well as assorted rice soups.

CONGEE One of the hotel’s best-known dishes is its delicate and fragrant congee. The soft and airy rice is well complemented by a perfectly seasoned soup, which you can watch the chef stir live. Opt for either pork or seafood and finish with the condiments provided.

PIZZA Using the same recipe as the hotel’s longtanding pizzeria, Peperoni, Rabiangthong cooks up delectable mini pizzas that are guaranteed to satisfy. The same station also serves other cheesy classics like lasagna and baked spinach, all made to order.

FRESH MEAT Choose your meat from the station, whether it’s beef, lamb or pork, and let the cooks prepare it to your preferred doneness. All meat is marinated and pre-baked to guarantee the most scrumptious flavors and tenderness.

GRILLED SEAFOOD To make sure each prawn is served at its finest, Rabiangthong’s chefs never pre-boil them before putting them on the grill. As the

chef says: “We’d rather cook it slowly than lose the aroma and sweetness in the boil.” Grilled salmon has also recently been added to the station.

Deep fried marinated blue fish river with tamarind sauce

JAPANESE FOOD Whether it’s rolls, sushi or sashimi, you won’t find dried out and pre-assembled pieces here. Every roll is made in small batches to make sure they don’t lose their freshness, while sashimi is cut-to-serve only when you order. Steamed Blue Crabs

Priced at B550 for lunch and B850 for dinner, the buffet at Rabiangthong already represents great value for money, but dine within Jul 31 and you’ll receive a B100 gift voucher, and use for the next time you visit the restaurant.

Another Round The best new bars to get your drink on this July. By Vasachol Quadri Whiteline Gallery and Bar

Hair of the Dog Joining the community of bars and restaurants at Mahatun Plaza Arcade, next to La Monita and Whisgars, Hair of the Dog is the latest serious beer bar in town, run by former tap master at Mikkeller Bangkok Pete Spalino and friends Jon Andresen and Mike Macdonald. Here, the tiny bare concrete room provides an intimate drinking hole, while surgical lighting above the bar and hospital beds doubling as tables give off a haunted hospital vibe. There are 13 beers on tap, supplied by all the familiar faces (Beervana, Brewdog and Hopsession), which they say will rotate regularly. Priced at B220-430. 2/F, Mahatun Plaza, 888/26 Phloen Chit Rd., 02-650-7589. Open daily 5pm-midnight. BTS Phloen Chit

Whiteline Gallery and Bar Finally, somewhere for live music and arty parties on Silom. This renovated six-story shop-house on the corner of Silom Soi 8 is the brainchild of filmmaker Oliver Wolfson. For now, the main action takes place on the ground floor, a grungy art space that’s more than a little reminiscent of Charoenkrung’s Soy Sauce Factory, from the paintings on the whitewashed wall to the film projections and colorful lighting. The drinks keep things simple with beers: Leo starts from B80/can, Beerlao B150, Deschutes IPA at B250, with homebrew soon to come on tap. The bar is currently busy hosting esoteric events from Fri-Sun, including this Saturday’s gig Smoke (see BK Now, page 36), featuring exciting synth-pop act Naked Astronaught and more. In the future, the whole building will be turned into an entertainment hub, combining bar, restaurant, club and gallery. Silom Soi 8, 087-061-1117. Open Fri-Sat 7pm-11:45pm, Sun 8pm-10pm. BTS Sala Daeng

Craft Silom and Belle’s Room Whisgars’ Silom branch has welcomed a couple of new additions. Firstly, the supposed “pop-up” beer spot Craft (Sukhumvit Soi 23) has followed it across town. Craft Silom offers some 20 craft beers on tap with names including Rogue Dead Guy Ale (B220/320 per half-pint/pint), Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA (B250/350) and Two Tales Black Ale Draught (B310-410). Secondly, Belle’s Room has opened inside the same venue. Hidden behind a wall, this speakeasy-inspired lounge only has a small list of cocktails, but do ask the bartender to tailor one to your mood. G/F, Holiday Inn Silom, 981 Silom Rd. Open daily noon-midnight

Brew Beer & Ciders Sukhumvit Soi 11 After launching The Beer Cap on RCA last year, beer enthusiast and entrepreneur Chis Foo has returned to his blockbuster brand, Brew Beer & Ciders, opening a new branch on the Soi 11 party strip. The new venue takes over a twostory building opposite Marshmallow and sells some 300 imported bottles. On tap, there are currently 10 brews from the likes of Beervana, Leffe, Magners, Paulaner, Bacchus, Stella Artois, Bombardier, Limburgse Witte, Guinness and Brewdog (Punk IPA). Prices start from B240-260/pint. 30 Sukhumvit Soi 11, 02-255-5532. Open Mon-Sun 11am-2am. BTS Nana

Revolucion Cocktail Bar There’s a nightlife revolution going on down in Sathorn. Hot on the heels of the French bistro/bar Marcel comes this colorful Latin-American-themed cocktail bar. With branches in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Xiemen, the new opening brings a touch of Suk 11-style nightlife to the area. The imported bartenders specialize in both classic cocktails like mojito and Moscow Mule, and reinvented signatures like the Aged Negroni (gin, Martini Rosso, Campari, fresh strawberry, blueberry, orange, passion fruit and soda, B390). Tapas dishes come from French chef Julien Lavigne, formerly of D’Sens and Oskar bar (do order the the truffle and iberico pork grilled cheese). 50 Sathorn Soi 10, 02-235-4823. Open daily 5pm-2am

Whisgars Silom

Sugar Ray

Modern Classics This weekend, check out these four brand-new whiskycentric cocktails at some of Bangkok’s best bars.

Le French Cremation at Whisgars Silom

New York Sour and Pacific Rob Roy at Pacific City Club

The whisky and cigars expert has so much happening right now. It recently branched out to Silom with a third venue of Whisgars that also includes a follow-up to Craft beer bar and a hidden speakeasy cocktail lounge called Belle’s Room. Here, talented lady mixologist Suwincha (Chacha) Singsuwan offers tailor-made cocktails depending on her customers’ favorite base spirit, as well as a signature menu. We highly recommend Le French Cremation (B395++), a smoky and sweet whisky-based cocktail made from a mix of Chivas Regal Extra, Green Chartreuse and vanilla syrup. To serve, the mixologist will burn a secret herb on a wooden board and cover it with the serving glass before pouring in the mix for a smoky result.

Located on the 28th floor, this normally members’ only networking space consists of a Six Sense spa, fitness facilities, meeting room, cigar bar and club lounge. But right now, part of the lounge is open to the public for Thursday’s jazz night and the Sundowner’s networking event every Friday. Be sure to try the New York Sour (B290) cocktail, which puts a twist on the classic whisky sour by mixing Chivas Regal Extra, fresh lime juice and syrup with a full-bodied red wine. Or, if you’re looking for something sweet and aromatic, go for the Pacific Rob Roy, made using Chivas Regal Extra, Martini Rosso and almond syrup, garnished with rosemary. Alternatively, just ask veteran mixologist Sanoj for his personal recommendations.

Extra LP at Tonino Lamborghini Lounge This luxurious spot in Ekkamai is the Lamborghini lifestyle brand’s first lounge in Southeast Asia, and welcomes the city’s swanky set. The futuristic, red-lit venue sits behind the Horizon Building on Soi Ekkamai, offering a bit of everything from coffee and brunch in the morning to pizza and pasta by night. But cocktails are the real highlight here. Pa, the lady mixologist behind the bar, is capable of making special cocktails depending on your mood and always keeps an updated list of drinks. One of the latest additions is Extra LP (B350), created by Wipawade Krongmuang, which features an infusion of Chivas Regal Extra, cinnamon, vanilla fresh lime juice and sugar syrup for a taste that’s mild and sophisticated. Rob Royce at Sugar Ray This cocktail-centric bar is a hidden gem on Ekkamai Soi 21. The bar is run by some very cool cats who make syrup under the brand Socrates and organize the Made by Legacy flea market. The interior combines apothecary-whimsy with homey charm: leather couches, wooden tables and steel shelves showcasing jars of spirits. Try the newly launched Rob Royce (B450), a combination of Chivas Regal Extra, Carpano Antica Formula-infused vanilla and cocoa nibs, and orange bitters, stirred with ice before being served in a chilled coupette glass with Royce Nama chocolate. Do note that it’s only open three nights a week: Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. 2/F, Baan Ekkamai, Ekkamai Soi 21, 094-417-9898. Open Wed, Fri-Sat 8pm-2am. Crab and Claw

The Mud 26

Lobster & Oyster

This latest project from the people behind The Local, Ployparn Markawat and chef Colin Stevens, is all about New Englandstyle seafood. Don your bib and prepare to get your hands dirty by digging, hammering and cracking into shellfish dishes like the whole Maine lobster (B2,600) and bucket of crabs (B1,300) or keep it neat with lobster thermidor (B2,600), crab roll (chilled peekytoe crab on a bun, B490), clam chowder (B220) and oyster rockefeller (B360). Perhaps best of all, they say their freshly imported ingredients all come from sustainable sources.

Here, every table comes with a tabletop charcoal brazier so you can grill your own fresh seafood amid an American barnstyle setting. The highlight is the XL Sea Platter (B999), comprising a 30cm-long giant squid tentacle, Japanese scallops and freshwater prawns. Finish your meal with a classic campfire dessert of s’mores (chocolate and toasted marshmallow between crackers, B80).

As the name suggests, this place is known for its fresh lobster and oyster dishes. Run by grill-specialist chef Marian Baranek, who has six years’ experience at Hix restaurant in London, this seafood spot’s specialties include sets such as Canadian grilled lobster (B230 per 100 grams) with mashed potato, garlic bread and salad. Other highlights include lobster thermidor with portobello mushrooms (B625), smoked lobster (B240 per 100 grams) and appetizers such as grilled portobello mushrooms with cheese (B195 for normal size, B250 for giant size).

Craberman Inspired by American-style crab houses, this rustic-looking restaurant aims to be a new home for seafood lovers with simple dishes done right. Fresh oysters are B720 for a dozen, steamed crab (B700/kg) comes in one of four seasoning choices, three of which are secret, and river prawns start at B1,250/kg and can be served grilled or fried with garlic and pepper. Note: seafood is only available for dinner. The restaurant does Southern-style kao gaeng at lunch. Mahatun Plaza, Phloen Chit Rd., 092-420-9999. Open Mon-Fri 11am-2pm; Mon-Sat 5-11pm. Koongtung Inspired by American-style seafood restaurants, Koongtung’s “eat with your hands” concept sees food served on the table with no plates or cutlery. The owner guarantees that all the seafood is delivered fresh each day from local markets in Mahachai and Khlong Toei. To go with it are three homemade sauces: Bang Bang red spicy sauce, Thai seafood sauce and garlic and pepper sauce. The various seafood buckets include prawns (B189 for small size and B289 for medium size), river prawns (B389) and mixed prawns, clams and mussels (B389). Reservations are recommended during the prime hours of 8pm-9pm. Night Market near Ram Intra-At Narong Expressway, Praditmanoontham Rd., 086-761-5558. Open daily 6pm-1am

Nawamin Festival Walk, Prasertmanukij Rd., 085-364-6419. Open Tue-Fri 5-10:30pm; Sat-Sun noon-3pm

Laemgate Previously at Rain Hill, the renowned seafood restaurant from Sriracha Laemgate has opened in Ari where it offers an all-youcan-eat deal (B555 net) featuring fresh catches from Chonburi and oysters from their own farm. Other recommended dishes include namprik kaipoo (crab egg chili paste), moo kam wan (sweet grilled pork). Finish your meal with ice cream (lime, Thai tea), crispy roti and floral tea. Note: Reservations are mandatory. The buffet is 90 mins/round (11:30am, 1:30pm, 5:30pm and 7:30pm) and be cautious with your order because you’ll be charged an extra B200 per left-over dish. 30/1 Phahon Yothin Soi 11, 084-959-5959. ADVERTORIAL

Energy Saving for Sustainable Enhancement The Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) is working together with Impact Muang Thong Thani to prove that investing in sustainable energy management can reap big business rewards as the country looks to advance its MICE industry standards. In order for Thailand to be recognized as one of the top five MICE destinations in Asia, a serious upgrade of venue standards is required. With this in mind, TCEB is supporting IMPACT Exhibition Management Co., Ltd., which heads Impact Muang Thong Thani Convention and Exhibition Center, to improve its standards, especially in regards to energy management. Here, we Exhibition Management Co.,Ltd, about how energy saving can support the business. When did Impact start its sustainable policy? We have focused on lifting our security standard since the Bali bombing in 2002. From that time, TCEB has worked with us to upgrade our MICE capabilities to meet international standards. TCEB has helped us achieve MSMS 22300 (MICE Security Management System) certification in 2009 and ISO 22000 (Food Safety Management) certification in 2012. With sustainability having become the major development talking point across the world, we have really focused on energy management since early 2011, becoming the world’s first convention and exhibition venue to receive ISO 50001 certification that same year.

TCEB has helped us achieve ISO 22000 (food safety) certification in 2005 and MSMS (MICE security management system) certification in 2009

How did you succeed in such a short time? Staff are the key. You need to raise awareness about the goals of each policy and get them onboard. No matter how much money you put into changing all the light bulbs, it will be a waste if your staff don’t understand the true meaning of energy management.

Why should all businesses, especially in the MICE industry, implement sustainable practices? Sustainability ensures you can expand your business responsibly. It’s not just about laying down green grass. You need to meet international standards, such as ISOs, to prove that your business has grown with the required quality. These certifications help you gain trust and business with international clients. For those MICE businesses who want to get the certification, the TCEB can help subsidize the costs involved. How can businesses make a difference?

What’s been the outcome since you started this energy plan?

For Thailand to be one of the top five of MICE destinations in

IMPACT’s Targets

Have you considered using alternative energy? Yes, We are now exploring the use of gas and solar power. We study on solar energy for our exhibition buildings and all future projects like parking buildings. Though it won’t completely replace conventional energy, we anticipate it can make up 20 percent. We’ve looked into installing wind turbines option at our lake too, but the study has not been positive enough.

OPEN DOOR

Err The brains behind Bo.lan serve up nostalgic Thai vibes. The buzz: Err is the newest project by chef-couple Duangporn Songvisava and Dylan Jones, the masterminds behind one of Bangkok's top Thai restaurants, Bo.lan. With its name taken from the informal Thai word for agreement, Err aims to be a hangout spot with a casual and raw vibe that showcases the fun side of Thai culture. The chefs also encourage diners to get in the sprit by traveling upriver by boat. The decor: Set in a two-unit shop-house near the river, the restaurant is decorated mainly with rustic and nostalgic elements. The bare bricks and concrete are livened up with an old wooden kitchen cabinet, tin plates and retro children’s board games, while the kitchen and seating is modern yet refined. The painting of a hippie aunt in sunglasses cooking on a seem-

30

ingly crumbling wall sums up the theme pretty well. The food and drinks: Though the bites are more casual, you can still expect the focus to be on good ingredients and slowfood techniques aimed at lessening the restaurant’s environmental impact. To go with the bar vibe, there’s a list of small-portioned Thai dishes that go well with drinks. These include the likes of chicken satay with brioche (B195), naem (Northern-style garlic and sticky rice cured pork, B195) and the so-called Chicken Movie (B150), deep-fried whole-chicken skin with homemade Sriracha sauce (B150). There are also serious meal options like pad krapao nuea (stir-fried beef with holy basil, B380), clay pot braised black-lip mussels with glass noodles and black bean sauce (B320), and pork hock in tom yam

soup with pickled cabbage (B180). The bar boasts a lot of cocktails made with Thai spirits, like the Waan Noi (Maa Jai Dam banana spirit, shade grown coffee and coffee liqueur, B250) and the LTBT (Lamai Takrai Bai Toey, Lamai sugar cane spirit, lemongrass and pandan essence and lime, B220). Why you should care: Of course, Bo.lan fans will find much to enjoy. But if you still haven’t checked out that highly-rated establishment (#10 in our Top Tables 2015) for fear of fine-dining haughtiness (and prices), here’s a much more relaxed setting to try Bo and Dylan’s creations. NEW AND NOTED

Daily Fruit

This new cafe on the corner of Siam Square Soi 11 comes from a chain that's already popular in Chiang Mai. As its name suggests, Fruiturday (Siam Square Soi 11, 082-204-0066) focuses mainly on fruits, in choices like mango, apple, orange and coconut. Choose from simple fresh fruits (starting at B40), fresh fruit juices (starting at B35), fruit smoothies (starting at B59), fruits with yogurt or milk blends (starting at B79) and fruit ice cream (B40/scoop) to fruit-focused desserts like the Fruit Family (coconut pudding with variety of fruits, B119) and All About Mango (mango pudding served with mango, ice cream and sticky rice, B159).

Mexican House

Set in a small blue house toward the end of Soi Ari, Casa Azul (2/23 Phahon Yothin Soi 7 [Ari], 02-619-5107) is the latest addition to Bangkok's thriving Mexican restaurant scene. Themed and named after Frida Kahlo's house in Mexico City, the setting is cer-

They keep the vibe casual with Mexican comfort dishes like nachos (starting at B290), burritos with fillings like smoked pork, grilled chicken and veg (starting at B200) and quesadillas (starting at B200), while the chalkboard lists daily specials like tamales (Mexican steamed corn-dough wrap, B150). The bar packs plenty of booze, too, including margaritas (starting B150), Singha (B80), Corona (B200) and Verdett (starting at B240) beers, and a few white and red wines (starting at B150 by the glass).

Savory Shoppe

The former dessert cafe Flour Shoppe (G/F, Central Chidlom, Phloen Chit Rd.) now serves up savory dishes too. Thai-Irish head chef Brian Hill says he's taken inspiration from classic American diners, though the focus remains on house-made ingredients. Dishes include English muffin burgers (from B165), breakfast sandwiches (from B90), spaghetti with spicy anchovy and breadcrumbs (B160) and the warm breakfast salad (B175). Natcha Sanguankiattichai

Le Boeuf HHHH French, Steak. Mayfair, Bangkok - Marriott Executive Apartments, 60 Lang Suan Rd., 093971-8081. Open Mon 11:30am-11pm; Sat-Sun 11am-11pm. BB-BBB

This steak-frites specialist takes its queues—in fact its entire concept—from Le Relais de Venise L’Entrecote, a 50-year-old Parisian restaurant where the wait for steak in a classic “Cafe de Paris” green sauce served with bottomless fries can take more than an hour. Le Boeuf in Bangkok isn’t affiliated with them, but David Perrot (of Crepes & Co.) claims he’s got the original green sauce recipe from the Cafe de Paris in Geneva, which popularized L’Entrecote’s sauce some 20 years before the Parisian restaurant opened. While we can’t test that claim, we can say that whatever sauce Perrot and his kitchen team are serving is pretty delicious, whether authentic or not. What tastes like a potent mix of dijon mustard and garlic laced with an unholy amount of butter makes for a powerful accompaniment to the single main dish spotlighted at Le

Yakiniku Bar HHHH Japanese. 55 Sukhumvit Soi 53, 02-259-5781. Open Mon-Fri 4-11:30pm; Sat-Sun noon-11pm. BTS Thonglor. Parking available. BB-BBB

Akiyoshi is one of the most popular shabushabu chains in Bangkok thanks to its quality meats and succulent soup. Sharing the same space is this yakiniku sister chain. Upon your arrival, you’ll be asked whether you’re having yakiniku or shabushabu and be seated accordingly. Don’t worry; you can also do both. There are tables with grills installed for yakiniku, while the staff will bring you a table-top compact stove if you opt for something soupy. The sizable dining room is decorated in a contemporary Japanese style, though the soundtrack is a weird mix of English pop ballads. Unlike the shabu side, there’s no buffet option for grilling. The menu is filled with all the usual meat items with a brief explanation of the cuts. Among the options, there are two imported cuts of wagyu from Japan: sirloin (B1,100/120g)

Boeuf: entrecote steak with a walnut green salad and unlimited fries (B680). (Although unlike other famous L’Entrecote restaurants, you’ll also find lamb [B720] and salmon [B880] for the beef-weary.) Unfortunately for somewhere with such single focus, all three of our steaks (one rare, two medium) are overdone, but that only detracts slightly from what is deliciously tender and flavorsome meat. The unlimited fries come swiftly from the kitchen and only ever in small batches to ensure they’re always crisp and piping hot. There are only four starters on the menu too; all amply portioned variations of spreadable meat, from foie gras terrine (B560) and chicken liver mousse (B315) to pork rillettes (B330). We love all of them. Wines are kept equally compact with an OK house Bordeaux at B190/653/980 (glass/ carafe/bottle) and a further selection of whites and reds that never breaks above B3,000. The dessert menu is more ambitious, with over a dozen classic options veering towards the creamy and chocolatey. The vanilla ice - cream profiteroles in chocolate sauce (B260) are a safe bet. The restaurant itself is also a nice place to sit. Detached from the serviced apartments in a pill-shaped glass box, it feels like a standalone, decked out in a fitting combination of dark woods, ox blood fabrics, brass and leather. If anything, the richness of the surroundings makes you feel a little too guilty exploiting an all-you-can-eat French fries deal.

and karubi (rib meat, B1,300/120g). Other than these, it’s all about the local beef, priced from B280/120g for the plate cut, dubbed “Yakiniku Bar,” to B550/120g for the special rib cut. There are also a few pork options from B180-200, chicken at B150 and seafood like tiger prawn (B220), squid (B200) and scallop (B280). On our last visit, the waiter didn’t seem all that knowledgeable, offering answers like, “It’s better” or “It’s yummier” when we asked the difference between the jyo karubi (special rib, B550) and karubi (rib, B350). Aside from that, the service is nothing short of attentive when it comes to changing your grill top or adding more firepower. For those who can’t quite d e c i d e, t h e re a re a s s o r t e d b e e f (B450/120g) and pork sets (B380/150g), both accompanied by lettuce and kimchi. Overall, the meat is fresh and succulent, only ruined by an overly sweet marinade. The overwhelming sweetness continues with the yakiniku sauce served on the table and the gochujang sauce of the bibimbap (B180, B250 for hot stone pot). However, the seafood is fresh, such as the salmon butter yaki (B180), for which the cook himself delivers the salmon on a bed of butter and enoki mushroom, and handles the grill duties himself. Though this yakiniku spot doesn’t quite live up to its shabu sister’s reputation, the produce is reliable and so is the service.

last word FREEWILL ASTROLOGY LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): A researcher at the University of Amsterdam developed software to read the emotions on faces. He used it to analyze the expression of the woman in Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting, the Mona Lisa. The results suggest that she is 83 percent happy, 9 percent disgusted, 6 percent fearful and 2 percent angry. Whether or not this assessment is accurate, I appreciate its implication that we humans are rarely filled with a single pure emotion. We often feel a variety of states simultaneously. In this spirit, I have calculated your probable mix for the coming days: 16 percent relieved, 18 percent innocent, 12 percent confused, 22 percent liberated, 23 percent ambitious and 9 percent impatient. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): “What makes you heroic?” asked philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Here’s how he answered himself: “simultaneously going out to meet your highest suffering and your highest hope.” This is an excellent way to sum up the test that would inspire you most in the coming weeks, Virgo. Are you up for the challenge? If so, grapple with your deepest pain. Make a fierce effort to both heal it and be motivated by it. At the same time, identify your brightest hope and take a decisive step toward fulfilling it. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 22): Actress and musician Carrie Brownstein was born with five planets in Libra. Those who aren’t conversant with astrology’s mysteries may conclude that she is a connoisseur of elegance and harmony. Even professional stargazers who know how tricky it is to make generalizations might speculate that she is skilled at cultivating balance, attuned to the needs of others and adaptive to life’s ceaseless change. So what are we to make of the fact that Brownstein has said, “I really don’t know what to do when my life is not chaotic”? Here’s what I suspect: In her ongoing exertions to thrive on chaos, she is learning how to be a connoisseur of elegance and harmony as she masters the intricacies of being balanced, sensitive to others and adaptive to change. This is important for you to hear about right now. SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21): You’re entering a volatile phase of your cycle. In the coming weeks, you could become a beguiling monster who leaves a confusing mess in your wake. On the other hand, you could activate the full potential of your animal intelligence as you make everything you touch more interesting and soulful. I am, of course, root-

ing for the latter. Be as ambitious to gain power over your own darkness as you are to gain power over what happens on your turf. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): I’m a big fan of the attitude summed up by the command “Be here now!” The world would be more like a sanctuary and less like a battleground if people focused more on the present moment rather than on memories of the past and fantasies of the future. But in accordance with the astrological omens, you are hereby granted a temporary exemption from the “Be here how!” approach. You have a poetic license to dream profusely about what you want your life to be like in the future. Your word of power is tomorrow. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): A philanthropist offered $100,000 to the Girls Scouts chapter of Western Washington. But there were strings attached. The donor specified that the money couldn’t be used to support transgender girls. The Girl Scouts rejected the gift, declaring their intention to empower every girl “regardless of her gender identity, socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation.” Do you have that much spunk, Capricorn? Would you turn down aid that would infringe on your integrity? You may be tested soon. If you are faithful to your deepest values, even if that has a cost, you will ultimately attract an equal blessing that doesn’t require you to sell out. (P.S. The Girls Scouts subsequently launched an Indiegogo campaign that raised more than $300,000.) AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Consider the possibility of opening your mind to provocative influences you have closed yourself off from. You may need

to refamiliarize yourself with potential resources you have been resisting or ignoring, even if they are problematic. I’m not saying you should blithely welcome them in. There still may be good reasons to keep your distance. But I think it would be wise and healthy for you to update your relationship with them.

to a part of your past that you have never owned and understood…a phase from the old days that you have partially suppressed…an intense set of memories you have not fully integrated. I say it’s time for you to deal with this shadow. You’re finally ready to acknowledge it and treasure it as a crucial thread in the drama of your hero’s journey.

PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Over 10,000 species of mushrooms grow in North America. About 125 of those, or 1.25 percent, are tasty and safe to eat. All the others are unappetizing or poisonous, or else their edibility is in question. By my reckoning, a similar statistical breakdown should apply to the influences that are floating your way. I advise you to focus intently on those very few that you know for a fact are pleasurable and vitalizing.

GEMINI (May 21-Jun 20): The ancient Greek philosopher Thales is credited as being one of the earliest mathematicians and scientists. He was a deep thinker whose thirst for knowledge was hard to quench. Funny story: Once he went out at night for a walk. Gazing intently up at the sky, he contemplated the mysteries of the stars. Oops! He didn’t watch where he was going, and fell down a well. He was OK, but embarrassed. Let’s make him your anti-role model, Gemini. I would love to encourage you to unleash your lust to be informed, educated, and inspired—but only if you watch where you’re going.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): The Latin motto “Carpe diem” shouldn’t be translated as “Seize the day!”, says author Nicholson Baker. It’s not a battle cry exhorting you to “freaking grab the day in your fist like a burger at a fairground.” The proper translation, according to Baker, is “Pluck the day.” In other words, “you should gently pull on the day’s stem, as if it were a wildflower, holding it with all the practiced care of your thumb and the side of your finger—so that the day’s stem snaps softly away at its weakest point, and the flower is released in your hand.” Keep that in mind, Aries. I understand you are often tempted to seize rather than pluck, but these days plucking is the preferable approach. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): When I talk about “The Greatest Story Never Told,” I’m not referring to the documentary film about singer Lana Del Rey or any other cultural artifact. I am, instead, referring

CANCER (Jun 21-Jul 22): Charles Darwin is best known for his book The Origin of Species, which contains his seminal ideas about evolutionary biology. But while he was still alive, his best-seller was The Formation of Vegetable Mould Through the Action of Worms. The painstaking result of over forty years’ research, it is a tribute to the noble earthworm’s crucial role in the health of soil and plants. It provides a different angle on one of Darwin’s central concerns: how small, incremental transformations that take place over extended periods of time can have monumental effects. This happens to be one of your key themes in the coming months.
