Here at the Ministry of Communications and Magic, we know how much miscommunication and misinformation can cause misunderstanding and butthurt. We don’t mind reporters who report the truth, but those who create divisions in society through biased reporting will have their attitude adjusted. And by that we mean house-arrest in Narathiwat with nothing to do but listen to Bird Thongchai songs. But hey, it doesn’t have to come to that. We’re just asking that whenever journalists announce bad news, they do it professionally, with the right context. Let’s look at some examples. 1. The baht hasn’t been this low since 2009. OK, true. Not that we can be held responsible for the actions of Abhisit Vejjajiva; we had nothing to do with his premiership. But let us put the baht’s level into perspective. A low baht means your goods are cheaper for foreigners. So seize the opportunity instead of grumbling about your next Tokyo shopping expedition! You’ve been accumulating months’ worth of vintage US shirts and retro Italian eyeglasses at flea markets across town. Head to Sukhumvit Soi 11, set up a little rug, and sell it all back to their original owners who will find your prices very reasonable amid our current currency setback. 2. Exports haven’t been this bad since the 2010 flood. Why is it, you ask, that despite a weak baht, which makes our products cheaper, our exports have plummeted to a level unheard of since a cataclysmic flood wiped out Thailand’s (and hence the planet’s) entire hard drive manufacturing capacity and much of the region’s automobile production? Again, you seem to be lacking perspective—or are really desperate for a free stay in Narathiwat. Slowing exports is all part of Dear Leader’s self-sufficiency master plan. Why give our stuff away? We made it. It’s ours. We’re keeping it. If people want hard drives, they can make their own from now on. 3. THAI Airways hasn’t been this broke since forever. We can’t deny it. The national carrier seems to be experiencing some slight cash-flow issues at present. That’s actually a good thing. As they sell warehouses and former offices, you hipsters can snatch them up for a song and convert them into coffee shops and galleries. Or just imagine a food truck made from a retired Boeing A380! Besides, who needs to fly to New York when we’ve sucked them dry of every subway tile and taco van concept they had to offer? In short, quit grumbling and celebrate the SET tanking, the baht nosediving, exports plummeting and all that jazz. It’s just Mother Economy’s way of telling you it’s time to stand on your own two feet and get creative.

HOT OR NOT

Hot: Nostalgia

Not: Today

Things are kind of rough right now, what with the falling baht and exports at a record low (see Page 3, page 3). So, what better time to don those rose-tinted specs and reminisce. The city’s theater fraternity agrees, too. The coming weeks see the opening of four new plays: two about time travel, another set in the Rama 7-8 era and another set during the Vietnam War (see BK Now, page 21).

Hot: Self-trackers

Not: Work-out fads

Yoga with cats, surfing indoors and pretending to be a ninja––there’s never been so many ways for people to tell their friends they went to the gym without really working out. Ditch the fads (and the duck-face) and take responsibility for that flab with the new batch of self-tracking devices in town (see page 14).

INTERVIEW Acoustic crooner Apiwat “Stamp” Eurthavornsuk, 33, is back after a year’s hiatus with his biggest concert yet, Vitamilk presents Stamp Fahpah Concert, this Sep 19 at Impact Arena Muang Thong Thani. Here, the ex-coach of The Voice Thailand discusses how the show changed him and the next steps in his career. Why is the new concert called Stamp Fah Pah (Stamp Thunderbolt)?

Hot: Art galleries

Not: Art bars

You can’t just rent a space, chuck your mate’s doodles on the walls, plug in a fridge full of Leo and call yourself an art bar. Well, you can. But you can do better, as Schemata and Yen Akart Villa have proven by opening genuinely impressive new art spaces (see ow.ly/QBZXD)

How do you choose directors for your music videos?

kae71463

Hot: Hipster Greek

It will probably be the biggest concert of my life. It’s been a year since the Stamp Grean Day concert, so I thought now is the time to try. It’ll be fun. Grean Day was my first concert, so it was more focused on the music, like submitting a thesis at university. At first, we were thinking of naming the new concert Grean Day 2, but I wanted it to be fresh. Then I randomly came up with Fah Pah because I remembered reading a comic about a band with the name Wai Roon Fah Pah (Teenage Thunderbolt), which I thought was hilarious. It’ll be full-on, wild and really, really fun.

Not: Mexican trucks

When a trend makes it into a BK roundup, it’s a sure sign it’s reached saturation point. This week it’s the turn of taco-specializing food trucks, which have rolled into town alongside a raft of their bricks-and-mortar compadres (see page 16). Meanwhile, we’re training our eyes on the horizon for the imminent arrival of souvlaki trucks.

It depends if we have chemistry. There are only a few producers that know me well, like Pong (Thitipong Kerdtongtawee) from Hello Filmmaker and Ton (Yossiri Baisri) from Huaklom. Most of the time we’ll grab a bite to eat and discuss the gimmicks. The success

get in the loop

bkmagazine.com

of a music video depends on how well the director knows the artist. I adore Ter Nawapol’s MV to “Nakleng Keyboard” (Keyboard Hustler), even though I barely had any input. He sent me the plot and it was solid; he introduced the character into the music video, showing the viewer what [the character] does and building interest. I really like working with people like that— it makes the experience fun. How did your three years as a coach on The Voice Thailand change your attitude to music? I’ve grown up a lot from being involved with The Voice. I’ve become more understanding. I understand more about who I am, what I can and can’t endure. I expect less from people; I don’t expect that this person’s going to be like this or like that. And I understand more that everyone has their own thing going on, they have different baselines. What does the Thai music industry need to improve? I see a lot of cool bands and think there should be more live platforms

giveaways, updates, stories

facebook.com/bkmagazine

for them. When I was starting, I had a lot of places to perform like Fat Festival or Virgin gigs. But the radio industry is dying and these gigs are disappearing. Now, a new industry is happening and bands are getting popular from movie soundtracks and lakorn OSTs, being discovered on Youtube and then hired to perform at gigs. It’s like you have to be famous first before you can play. They should be able to practice and gain stage experience. Is it true that you waited in line with fans for K-Pop band Big Bang concert tickets? Yes. I was lining up to go to their concert. I started becoming a fan because of my girlfriend. I actually liked Girls’ Generation before and then my girlfriend liked Big Bang. Then I started taking her to watch [the concerts] and their concert was just really fun. There was like a collective effervescence that really hit home. Interview by Arisa Wiwatsomwong and Lalita Kittisrikangwan

MICE Sustainability Forum 2015 Moving Forward: Now or Out

Sustainability is now more than a trend. Having adopted sustainable practices since 2008, Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) first hosted the MICE Sustainability Forum in 2013 to raise awareness among Thailand’s MICE industry.

We now live in the Era of Sustainability where sustainable practices aren’t just a trend or nice things to have, but a requirement for future success. Those businesses who miss out will fast become outdated in the rapidly growing MICE industry. Come join us.

The MICE Sustainability Forum 2015 aims to encourage more local MICE businesses to jump aboard the sustainability movement by inviting a number of successful, talented

KHAO YAI

Back to the Mountain Escape Khao Yai has unveiled its brand new two-bedroom villas decked out in blocky wooden furniture. Each of the new villas are 263 sq meters, coming with two bedrooms and bathrooms, a pantry, spacious living room and, the highlight, a private, sunken pool—not to mention great views of the lush Khao Yai forests. The resort itself has plenty to offer after your daytime nature walk, such as an outdoor spot with a fireplace, a restaurant serving farm-to-table dishes, a rooftop bar and a communal pool with a well-stocked bar. Through Aug 31, the resort is offering introductory rates of B16,500 per night on Sun-Fri and B18,500 on Saturday. Reservations can be made at goo.gl/4d140y.

KHAO LAK

Nautical by Nature Named after a real ship, Khao Lak’s nautical newcomer, 813 Khaolak Hostel (www.fb.com/813khaolakhostel), is the latest themed hostel to appear on the sea-facing mountains. Located 800 meters from the beach and nestled right by the Khao Lak night market and International Tsunami Museum, you’ll feel like you just stepped into a ship’s interior when you see the bare cement walls, rustic furniture, wooden floorboards and nautical markers like wooden barrels, anchors and thick ropes. The hostel is home to 11 ship-style rooms, with two room types—single and double (both around B1,200 per night). Although an on-site restaurant is still in the works, there is an outdoor bar serving beer and classic cocktails, alongside live acoustic music.

Aiming to be light, sleek and moisture-wicking, highlight products include Speedform Fortis running shoes (B5,990) and One Low Basketball Shoes (B6,590), a collaboration with Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry. 1/F, Siam Center, Rama 1 Rd., 02-26581000. JUST THE BASICS 1

Xiaomi Mi Band (B790)

At first glance: This isn’t the most handsome-looking device on the planet—a silver oval-shaped tracker without a display nestled in a basic rubber bracelet. Features: Only the bare basics, such as a step-tracking sensor that also tracks distance, active minutes and calories burned, an automatic sleep detector that records deep and light cycles and a heartrate detector (a feature which its economical counterparts like the Fitbit Flex and Jawbone Up24 still lack). There’s also a silent, vibrating alarm clock and a vibrating alert whenever your phone rings. Also, the band is waterproof so you won’t have to fret about it when you’re stuck in a downpour. We say: The perfect starter for those who want to get a fitness band but aren’t sure if they should splurge just yet. 2

Fitbit Flex (B3,990)

At first glance: A small tracker encased in a sleek interchangeable plastic bracelet without a display, except for a row of lights that tell you how close you are to reaching your daily step goals. Features: Sensors that record the number of steps you take per day, which also calculate the estimated calories you’ve burned, distance traveled and active minutes. Additionally, the band boasts a sleep tracker and vibrating alarm, but you’ll have to manually switch between sleep and wake mode. The band also tolerates water well, but you shouldn’t swim with it on for too long. We say: This is the band you should invest in if you don’t want to go all out in terms of expense, but want something smooth and basic that will keep you accountable for your day-to-day activities. 3

Jawbone Up24 (B6,290)

At first glance: Arguably the best looking economical band, with its slick and “twisty” design making it look like a fashionable bracelet from afar. There is no screen, but two LED indicators light up when you switch between sleep and wake modes. Unlike its counterparts, the bracelet isn’t adjustable, so you’ll need to choose between three standard sizes. Features: A built-in step counter tracks your steps and can differentiate between a regular stroll versus a workout. The nifty sleep tracking system comes with a silent alarm to ensure you don’t wake up feeling groggy by only waking you up during a light sleep cycle. Another quirky feature is the inactive alert, where the bracelet will vibrate whenever you’ve been sitting still for too long, acting as a reminder for you to get up and stretch out. We say: Pricey for something basic, but it contains some useful features that the other bands lack.

14

FITNESS FANATICS 4

Fitbit Charge HR (B5,350)

At first glance: A medium-sized texture-finished band with a monochrome OLED display showing either the time, heart rate or steps taken. Features: Everything that the Fitbit Flex covers and more. The sleep tracker upgrades from manual to automatic, there’s a heart rate monitor that makes calorie counting more accurate, as well as a little screen that will show your stats in real time. However, unlike the Flex, it isn’t waterproof so make sure you remove it before you go for a swim. We say: A good economical choice for fitness fanatics who don’t want anything bulky. 5

Fitbit Surge (starts at B8,350)

At first glance: Designed as a high-end fitness tracker that will work for runners, the Fitbit Surge has the look of a fitness tracker and smartwatch hybrid. A square-shaped touchscreen display sits atop a rubber strap that grips nicely when you exercise. Features: The Fitbit Surge contains all the basic features present in the Flex model, with the addition of a three-axis built-in accelerometer—so now your steps up the stairs will count. The automatic sleep tracker allows you to comfortably nod off in front of the TV without fretting about manually activating sleep mode. The built-in GPS will help you track your runs, as well as generate a reading of heart rate and calories burned. As a bonus, the band is also able to show your text messages on screen, as well as let you control your phone’s music playlist via Bluetooth. We say: A great option for those who want a fitness tracker with a screen and built-in GPS. 6

Garmin Forerunner 225 (B10,900)

At first glance: A lightweight round-faced watch with an easy-toread color screen, secured on your wrist with a comfortable silicone strap. Features: A built-in, sensitive heart-rate tracker that will indicate your heart-rate zone (Active Recover, Aerobic Threshold, Tempo, Sub Lactate Threshold and Lactate Anaerobic Threshold) while you exercise. The Forerunner 225 also features a step tracker that is adjustable to the activity you’re doing. There is a built-in sleep tracker, too, which will give you detailed information on the app, including a breakdown of your physical movements while you sleep. We say: A suitable option for those who are really into their fitness and for desk-jobbers who religiously run races.

SUPER WATERPROOF 7

Polar Loop (B3,990)

At first glance: An horizontal LED screen across a smooth-looking black plastic bracelet without any knobs or buttons. Features: This waterproof band features a calorie and step counter which will detect whether you’re doing a high, medium or low intensity activity. The corresponding app will also show your daily, monthly and weekly activity levels as well as show you tips on how to reach your goals. We say: Solid for those who want a waterproof version of the Fitbit Flex or Jawbone Up. 8

Misfit Shine (B4,390)

At first glance: A matte-colored, round-faced tracking module secured between a rubber band. The module can be removed and clipped anywhere on your body if desired. Features: A sturdy but lightweight design that is waterproof up to 50 meters. Like other fitness bands, it features a step and sleep tracker and a personalized fitness goal setting. We say: An excellent basic band for those who like to swim for exercise. 9

Garmin Vivoactive (B9,700)

At first glance: The square face makes the tracker a look a little bulky, but it offers a semi-professional appearance with an easyto-read touchscreen. Features: A sleep and activity tracker customizable to the sport you’re playing, from swimming to golf via special watch applications. One of the most accurate sport-focused activity trackers on the market that we’ve tried thanks to the built-in GPS with strong satellite and automatic VO2 max calculations. We say: One of the best watches out there for all-round athletes who are fond of the water.

bites & blends RESTAURANT

Parisian House Located in the new glasshouse in front of Sindhorn building, Cafe Parisien serves up traditional French cuisine in consultation with Bangkok’s favorite French chef Herve Frerard (formerly of Le Beaulieu, #12 in Top Tables 2015). Unlike the chef’s defunct fine-dining restaurant, the mood is more casual here. Don’t miss the chef’s specialties like the ISA scallops served with celeriac puree and nantua sauce (B590) and pepper steak with French fries (B950). The place also offers a three-course set lunch deal at B690 with mains like Scottish salmon feuillete, navarin of lamb shoulder or grilled organic pork chop. 130-132 Wiresless Rd., 02-650-9993

World Food

The Ratchaprasong area’s biggest hotels have come together for High Tea Jubilee at Ratchaprasong, offering tea sets inspired by international tea cultures at eight locations around the junction from now till Oct 15. Participating venues include Renaissance’s R Bar, Anantara Siam’s Lobby Lounge, Centara Grand, St. Regis’s Drawing Room and Erawan Tea Rooms, as well as the newly opened 1823 Tea Lounge by Ronnefeldt at Gaysorn Plaza. The cheapest set on offer can be found at Erawan, where their Thailand-meets-Europe tea set (B600) includes bael pandan tea, Thaistyle sweets and a pistachio eclair, while the most lavish is at St Regis, where TWG tea paired with a selection of Italian desserts like Sicilian Cannoli will set you back B1,250/set.

The newly opened Amara Bangkok, an upscale hotel line from Singapore, has rolled out an all-day-dining restaurant, Element. The 145-seater, 24-hour restaurant, is helmed by executive chef Colin Liang, who has a long culinary experience of Western and Asian food. The menu’s focus is on authentic Singaporean dishes but it also comprises Thai and provinicial Chinese cuisine. The highlights include Hainanese chicken rice (B270), bak kut teh (pork bone soup B230), Singapore-style laksa (B380), Malay nasi lemak (B270), and Hokkien prawn mee Soup (B330). Also enjoy creative cocktails such as Singapore Sling and Amaria at the bar in the lobby. Amara Bangkok, 180/1 Surawong Rd., 02-021-8888

For the first time since Four Seasons Bangkok’s rebranding as Anantara Siam, the hotel is hosting its annual World Gourmet Festival (now in its 16th year) from Sep 7-13. Chefs, winemakers and food experts from around the world will gather to create eight dinners, five brunches and two high tea buffets. Participating chefs are Francesc Rovira from the one-Michelin-starred Fonda Xesc (Spain), Jean-Francois Berard of the one-Michelin-starred Hostellerie Berard (France), Patrick Raingeard of the one-Michelin-starred Cap Estel, France; Hirofumi Imamura of the one-Michelin-starred Kazuo Okada (Hong Kong) and Francesc Gimeno Manduley of Bohemic Bistro, Spain. Mex Level

Bangkok’s Tex-Mex and Mexican scene has never been so vibrant. Here are seven new openings from the last few months. By Natcha Sanguankiattichai and Arisa Wiwatsomwong

La Monita Urban Cantina

Tacos Factory

Cactus

This yellow kiosk is run by two kids from Thammasat’s liberal arts faculty whose mantra is “We cook for our friends.” Fittingly, the place has a quiet, friendly vibe, while some dishes add slightly tacky touches supposedly for local tastes, as in the Pizza Tacos (B139). More classic offerings include the soft/hard shell tacos (B69), quesadilla (B150), nacho set with cheese, sour cream and salsa (B99) and guacamole set (B109). Catering services are also available.

Cactus is co-owned by a Le Cordon Bleu graduate, who’s based his specialty tacos on traditional Mexican recipes. The truck’s offerings include the special flour tortilla chips with salsa (B60) or guacamole (B100), tacos (two per serving) with fillings like chicken tinga (B160), al pastor (pork, B180), shredded beef (B200) and the vegetarian cocoa bean, corn and zucchini (B150). Or opt for the trio option (one each of chicken, pork and beef) at B300. We’re impressed not only with the flour and corn tortilla, made in-house from scratch, but also the salsas ranging from sweet-and-sour pineapple to hot and smoky.

Express Mexican Food Cactus

After many years’ kitchen experience in his hometown Mexico City and also in Chicago, Martin Gutierrez and his Thai wife have opened this new kiosk in Phra Khanong’s W-District. As the name suggests, the place serves quick and traditional Mexican dishes (from B80-B220) made with local produce. Tacos, burritos, nachos and quesadillas come in chicken, pork, meat or vegetarian fillings. W-District, Sukhumvit Soi 69-71. Open daily 4pm-11pm. BTS Phra Khanong. ow.ly/Qsh9L

Taco Taxi Nana nightclubbers have a new place for a late-night feed. Parked in front of the Ambassador Hotel, this food truck is not at all hard to spot, with its bright yellow paint job and matching table sets. Operated by the same people behind the soi’s Tex-Mex establishment Charley Brown’s Mexicana, here you can expect the same tacos (B60 each) with fillings like shredded chicken or beef, pork al pastor, yucatan pork, crispy bacon and jalapeno prawns. You can choose between hard and soft shell, or add an extra B10 for the double-decker option (both shells glued together with refried beans). The truck also sells so-called Mexican smoothies (B100), aka frozen margaritas, in lime, strawberry and passion fruit flavors. Two Angels Tacos

In front of Ambassador Hotel, Sukhumvit Soi 11, 086-787-8064. Open Mon-Sat 8:30pm-3:30am. BTS Nana

Casa Azul Set in a small blue house toward the end of Soi Ari, Casa Azul’s funky, casual vibe and daily deals like Taco Tuesday and Friday ladies’ night have seen it quickly become a favorite among local residents. Themed and named after Frida Kahlo’s house in Mexico City, the setting is certainly lively thanks to wall paintings and other brightly colored art pieces. From the compact menu, expect staples like nachos (starting at B290), burritos with fillings like smoked pork, grilled chicken and grilled veg (starting at B200) and quesadillas (starting at B200). Also keep an eye on the chalkboard menu’s daily specials like tamales (Mexican steamed corn-dough wrap, B150), fish tacos (B250) and tuna burrito (B300). The bar naturally packs plenty of booze, too. Casa Azul

Currently parked mainly on Suan Phlu Soi 8 from 6:30pm, the truck is also a regular at Silom Soi 8’s newly-opene Whiteline bar and gallery every Friday. See ow.ly/QyXxc for details.

La Monita Urban Cantina This sleek new mall branch of the much-loved Mexican joint aims to elevate people’s expectations of the cuisine. Chef/owner Billy Bautista’s menu goes well beyond fastfood burritos and tacos, serving up plenty of modern twists, seasonal dishes and high-quality ingredients, alongside Latin craft cocktails and a decent view from Emquartier’s sixth floor. Creative ingredients are added to Mexican classics; think braised beef tongue tacos (B165), duck carnitas quesadillas (B380) and guacamole made with pineapple (B195) or mango (B220). We love the indulgent melting cheese dip (starting at B350), which you can have topped with house-made Longanisa pork sausage (B420)—like a quesadilla turned up to 11. 6/F, The Helix Quartier, The Emquartier, Sukhumvit Rd., 02-0036238. Open daily 10am-10pm. BTS Phrom Phong

Two Angels Tacos Named after two cities of angels, Los Angeles and Bangkok, this colorfully painted truck serves up specialty tacos. Pattanapong Sakduang has partnered up with LA-born Le Cordon Bleu graduate Chris Ostray, who formerly worked at LA names like Pigg, Wexlers’ Deli, Wood and Wine and Bastide before landing in Thailand and working with Chiang Mai’s Rustic and Blue. The tacos here are served with corn tortillas, made using imported corn masa from California. Fillings include classics like al pastor (pork) and carne asada (beef), as well as Thai twists like gai yang somtam (grilled chicken with papaya salad) and tom yum gung, all priced at B60 each. Other than tacos, they serve choriqueso (open tortilla with Mexican chorizo and melted cheese, B100), shrimp ceviche on tostada (B150) and some meattopped fries (B150). Popping up around town in locations like Soi Rangnam and Soi Thonglor. See www.fb.com/TwoAngelsTacos for details.

OPEN DOOR

Viva 21 The latest Viva branch emphasizes food as much as drink—with a little help from Eat Me’s Tim Butler. The buzz: Viva 21 is the third outlet by the Viva team after the riverside Viva Aviv and the JJ Market Viva 8. But unlike the other, drinkdriven Vivas, here the focus is put as much on the food. The decor: Set in a newly-built shop-house-style development, the wood-heavy space has little in the way of decoration beyond the building’s bare-brick walls, arched window frames and wooden floors, all lit up by Edison lightbulbs. The ground floor is dedicated to a long bar that takes up half the space, while the kitchen is set on the mezzanine level, with a chef’s table in front. The food: Spanish head chef Guillermo “Billy” Carnicero, who used to work at Eat Me, heads the kitchen and designed the menu of so-called "modern international cuisine" in consultation with Eat Me’s head chef, Tim Butler. The food's influences are global, span-

18

ning modern tapas like the Spanish snack selection (B650 for two), which includes red curry and smoked duck croquetas, mango gazpacho, Spanish omelet, kimchi chorizo and quail egg toast, and jilda with anchovy and olive, to creative takes on classics like wagyu strip loin steak tartare with Isaan–style seasoning served with rice crackers (B550). We also like the deconstructed salmon gravlax with diced wild-caught salmon cured with vodka, salt and brown sugar, cream cheese and crispy baked bagel slices (B350) as well as the lemon curd tart (B250), which features chopped coconut and peanut in a glass verrine topped with lemon curd and Italian meringue. The drinks: Cocktails and whiskey lead the way here. The head bartender specializes in molecular techniques picked up from his time at Myst (Thonglor). At Viva 21, he reinvents classics with creative presentation. Try the Lost Star (B280), a gin-based drink using

fresh starfruit juice mixed with syrup, blue curacao, apple syrup, lime juice, egg white and martini bianco, served with slices of starfruit, whipped cream and cola caviar on the side. For something more gentlemanly, order the Al Capone (B320), a whiskey-based drink made from Johnnie Walker Red Label, Hennessy, Grand Marnier and Jameson. Classic cocktails cost B220-B350. There are also plenty of single malts. Prices start from B220 for Singleton 12-year, B260 for Glenmorangie Original and B480 for Glenfiddich 18-year. Why you should care: Prices are perfectly positioned for bar food to share (plenty under B500 and not much over B1,000), while the fusion touches are handled well. Try the dark chocolate and fresh fig tart with milk chocolate chantilly (B240) for dessert. Upstairs, you’ll find the NY-inspired sneaker store.

New on Bangkok’s pastel tofu jelly dessert scene is Tan-Yu Tofu (Thaninthon Village, Vibhavadi Rangsit Soi 35, 02-0232267), which offers its signature grid-patterned jelly in five flavors: milk, green tea, taro, cocoa and strawberry (all B35), served with a variety of toppings for an extra B5-20. 8/10/15 6:13 PM

last word FREEWILL ASTROLOGY by Rob Brezsny LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Many people harbor the unconscious bias that beauty resides primarily in things that are polished, sleek and perfect. Celebrities work hard and spend a lot of money to cultivate their immaculate attractiveness, and are often treated as if they have the most pleasing appearance that human beings can have. Art that is displayed in museums has equally flawless packaging. But I suggest you appreciate a different kind of beauty: the crooked, wobbly, eccentric stuff. For the foreseeable future, that’s where you’ll find the most inspiration. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): “No tree can grow to Heaven unless its roots reach down to Hell,” wrote psychologist Carl Jung in his book Aion. My interpretation: We earn the right to experience profound love by becoming familiar with shadows and suffering. It may not be possible to ripen into our most radiant beauty without having tangled with life’s ugliness. Virgo, you have dutifully completed an extended phase of downward growth. In the next extended phase, however, upward growth will predominate. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 22): The Great Balancing Act of 2015 doesn’t demand that you be a wishy-washy, eager-to-please harmony whore. Instead, it asks of you to express what you stand for with great clarity. It invites you to free yourself from worrying about what people think of you. Do you know what you really want, Libra? Find out! P.S.: Your task is not to work on the surface level, trying to manipulate the appearance of things. Focus your efforts in the depths of yourself. SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21): Muslims, Jews and Christians are collaborating to erect a joint house of worship in Berlin. The building, scheduled to be finished by 2018, will have separate areas for each religion as well as a common space for members of all three to gather. Even if you don’t belong to any faith, you may be inspired by this pioneering effort to foster mutual tolerance. May it help inspire you to heal schisms, build consensus and cultivate harmony. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): In some phases of your life, you have been a wanderer. It has been a challenge to know which target you should aim your arrows at. You may have been forceful but not as productive as you’d like to be; you may have been energetic but a bit too inefficient to accomplish wonders. From what I can tell, one of those wandering seasons is now coming to a close. In the months ahead, you will have a growing clarity about where your future power spot is located—and may even find the elusive sanctuary called “home.” Here’s a good way to prepare: Spend a few hours telling yourself the story of your origins. Remember all the major events of your life as if you were watching a movie. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): You have been slowing to a crawl as you approach an exciting transition. But I’m here to advise you to resume normal speed. You have paid your dues; you have made your meticulous arrangements. Now it’s time to relax into the rewards you have earned. Lighten your mood, Capricorn. Welcome the onrushing peace and start planning how you will capitalize on your new freedom. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): “Most people reach the top of the ladder of success only to find it’s leaning against the wrong wall.” Aquarian actor Paul Sorensen said that. The coming months will be a good time to determine whether the ladder you have been climbing is leaning against the right or wrong wall. My advice is to question yourself at length. If, after your inves-

tigations, you decide it is indeed the wrong wall, climb down from the ladder and haul it over to the right wall. And if you’re satisfied that you are where you should be, celebrate! PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): When he served as Italian Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi denigrated the cuisine of Finland. “Finns don’t even know what prosciutto is,” he sneered. At best, he said, their food is to be “endured.” But Finland fought back. In an international pizza contest held in New York, their chefs won first prize for their “Pizza Berlusconi,” a specialty pizza that featured marinated reindeer. The Italian entry finished second. I foresee you enjoying a comparable reversal in the coming months, Pisces. ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): To ensure the full accuracy of this horoscope, I have resurrected an old-fashioned English word that isn’t used much any more: “gambol.” It means to cavort in a playful manner, or to romp around with mad glee, as if you are unable to stop yourself from dancing. In order to cultivate the state of mind that will enable you to meet all your dates with destiny in the coming weeks, you need to gambol at least once every day. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Do you remember your first kiss? How about the first time you had sex? Although those events may not have been perfectly graceful, they were radical breakthroughs that changed your life. Since then, there may have been a few other intimate rites of passage that have impacted you with similar intensity. No doubt you will experience others in the future. I suspect that the next installments are due to arrive in the coming months. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 20): Two-thirds of us don’t know what our strengths and talents are. That’s the conclusion of a study published in The Journal of Positive Psychology. One reason is what the report’s co-author Dr. Robert Biswas-Diener calls “strengths blindness,” in which we neglect our real powers because we regard them as ordinary or take them for granted. Here’s the good news, Gemini: If you suffer from even a partial ignorance about the nature of your potentials, the coming months will be a favorable time to remedy that glitch. CANCER (Jun 21-Jul 22): In 1504, Michelangelo finished his sculpture of the Biblical hero David. But he hadn’t been the first person to toil on the 17-foot-high block of marble. Forty years earlier, the artist Agostino di Duccio was commissioned to carve David out of the stone. His work was minimal, however. In 1476, Antonio Rossellino resumed where Agostino had stopped, but he didn’t last long, either. By the time Michelangelo launched his effort, the massive slab had languished for 25 years. I see parallels between this story and your own. I suspect you will be invited to take on a project that has been on hold. This may require you to complete labors that were begun by others—or maybe instigated by you when you were in a very different frame of mind. BK Magazine Friday, August 14, 2015
