Krungsri Decadent Gourmet Discounts Gianni Ristorante Chef Gianni Favro is a long-standing favorite on Bangkok's Italian restaurant scene. His venue on Soi Tonson is known for consistently outstanding food, an elegant opera-house atmosphere and polished service. Among the menu, the fritto misto with baby squid, tiny shrimp and fish fillets on a bed of polenta is head-and-shoulders above the mundane deep-fried starters served elsewhere, and the slow-cooked wagyu beef cheeks served with an Amarone wine are also wonderful. The ever-changing specials frequently knock it out of the ballpark.

Dear Dear Leader, We heard you’re in New York right now for the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly. It’s an important moment for humanity. While some heads of state, such as Omaral-Bashir or Kim Jong-un, will not be making the trip, you should still get to rub shoulders with many other world greats, like Vladimir Putin. We can’t tell you how psyched we are! We have a few things topping our agenda, and we do hope you can cover it all in between the boring speeches by old men. First, we need some Hudson Rye whiskey and Brooklyn Bitters to make Sazeracs with this dodgy absinthe a friend of ours just brought back from Romania. Try The Brooklyn Kitchen (Frost St.), which will stock all that and more. When you get back, the trick to not getting busted at customs is to... Actually, you should be fine. Secondly, we absolutely must have the new pink iPhone 6S which won’t be here for another month. (Unlocked! Don’t get ripped off on eBay, Dear Leader.) Thirdly, a bar dedicated solely to cereal. Half of Bangkok is already covered in white subway tiles with “industrial” light bulbs dangling from the ceiling. But much work remains to be done if we’re to be named Best New York City Outside of New York City before the decade is up. For example, we’ve been told that eating cornflakes with almond milk out of a shoe box is now where it’s at. We hear you, Kith Treats (Flatbrush Ave.) is kinda ripping off London’s Cereal Killer Cafe—but their minimal aesthetic is more in line with ours. So take lots of pictures and we can copy it here, too. Fourthly, we so want that hippie chic look that was all over the catwalks at last week’s New York Fashion Week. See if you can use your charm and connections to get some of that crochet goodness from Tommy Hilfiger—months before Spring 2016 collections hit stores! We hear their PR is a real rice queen, so don’t be shy. Finally, if you happen to stumble upon a blueprint for democracy, do bring it back, too. Unless it’s going to take up precious space in your suitcase, in which case, the aforementioned items definitely come first. Have a great trip and a safe flight home, The Good People of Bangkok

upfront HOT OR NOT

Hot: Justice

Not: How long it takes

Disgruntled puu yai and angry young business scions have not had it good lately. First, the Phuketwan journalists were acquitted of all charges brought against them by Thailand’s navy, then the Appeals Court threw out Natural Fruits’ defamation case against human rights lawyer Andy Hall. Now it’s been announced that Kanpitak “Mu Ham” Pachimsawat is finally going to see some jail-time for mowing down a queue of waiting bus passengers in 2007. Justice here may not be swift, but at least it can happen.

INTERVIEW

Hot: Australia

Not: Brooklyn

Now that the streets of Brooklyn have become saturated with Aussie cafes, ours have too. Hot on the heels of Kaizen, Toby’s (ow.ly/Snk70) is the latest blondwood shrine to smashed avocados and flat whites. Elsewhere, Sweetery (ow. ly/Snkhw) is doing ridiculously over-the-top desserts with origins down under, while chains Jones the Grocer and Pie Face are flying the Oz flag at Emquartier.

After seven years absence from the spotlight, ‘90s electro-pop wizard Zomkiat Ariyachaipanich, aka Mr. Z, one of the founders of the legendary Bakery Music record label, is back with a new single, “Chan Rak Ter Yoo” (I Still Love You). Here, he tells us why today’s Thai music can never stack up against his beloved ‘90s heyday. What’s driven you to return to music? After releasing my last album seven years ago, I went traveling and produced some work for others. Then two years ago I went on tour with P.O.P., which helped me meet lots of young musicians who inspired me to explore the music world again. It made me curious to find out how things had changed from the old days.

Hot: Asoke

Not: Sleaze

Wow. It seems like Bangkok’s sleaziest area is finally beginning to get on board with the whole not-pandering-to-sexpats thing. Last week, it welcomed Q&A, the new cocktail lounge from the Sugar Ray guys, while earlier in the month saw the opening of Lab Ramen burger kiosk, new-school steakhouse Meat Bar 31 and the follow-up to Ekkamai’s Nikko coffee shop. Pity the guys behind Hooters didn’t get the memo.

Hot: Bands to watch Not: Lazy lineups Before winter fully strikes and the likes of Tattoo Colour, Flure and Getsunova pad out every festival lineup under the sun, take note: there’s a whole new roster of artists coming up whose musical chops are certified by some of the biggest local names in the business. Find out who they are and where to see them next on page 6.

What’s your take on the music scene now? Aside from the music, social media totally amazes me. I recently started a Facebook fan page after 20 years in the industry. Honestly, I’m an oldworld guy. I still believe in organic, face-to-face interaction, so I’m not quite used to these virtual relations. But I’ve never been able to interact with fans so instantaneously—it’s a great thing to learn. Musicians these days are so talented, but they have problems producing well-crafted works. I was shocked to ask a band about their recorded work, and they confessed that they didn’t really have any. They are so talented! How come they don’t create their own music?

get in the loop

bkmagazine.com

Why do you think this is the case? There are a couple of reasons our music industry is flailing: too many distractions, whether it’s the internet or K-Pop, and the political situation. How can musicians make great works amid conflict and the fear of having their gigs canceled? It’s been like this for a decade, really. There’s also a dearth of A&R reps these days with the collapse of the traditional record label system. Artists choose to promote their music through Youtube instead. But good songwriters are sparse. What are your tips for the next generation of songwriters? Music references are important. For example, if you like disco pop, you need to know Michael Jackson, not just Lady Gaga. You need to be able to analyze the music you are passionate about and experiment over and over. Who knows, you might invent a new kind of music, or at least create your own style. In the ‘90s, there were loads of these types of kids doing this. It’s rare nowadays.

giveaways, updates, stories

facebook.com/bkmagazine

Why do you think we’re seeing so many reunion concerts these days? Maybe people are just feeling more nostalgic. But for me, there are simply less outstanding artists these days compared to the ‘90s. Good songs are harder to come by than in the old days too, especially what I call “raw songs”—which are those which are so well-written they can be remixed into so many differentversions. Any plans to launch another record label like Bakery? I wish I could. I still love to see and guide young people playing music with passion. Interview by Monruedee Jansuttipan and Theerada Moonsiri

PRO PICKS We ask 11 big figures in the Bangkok music scene to name their favorite new local bands. By Carl Dixon and Vasachol Quadri

1. Strange Brew (Kha-Na-Beer-Bood) Recommended by: Wannarit "Pok" Pongprayoon, Stylish Nonsense/ Panda Records About them: Based in Bangsaen, Chonburi, this band formed way back in 2008 but have been performing as Strange Brew since late 2014. The five-piece—Golf Yutthana (vocals/guitar), Jay Ratchanon (bass), Mo Kritinan (guitar), Peep Sirimit (organ) and Ohm Chanutpong (drums)—have a sound that’s best described as psychedelic surf rock.

Mattnimare

Pok says: “Strange Brew have really nice songs and a guitar sound that reminds me of Si-TaoTher, the Thai indie-pop legend from the ‘90s. Their music is part surf-pop, part ‘70s psychedelia, with garage-style drumming and vintage organs. They sing in Thai, about what’s happening around them, using old-fashioned language. Listen to singles like ‘Bangsaen Lady,’ ‘Starshine’ and ‘3Hours.’ The group has a sense of humor, too, as you can see by their Thai name, ‘KhaNa-Beer-Bood,’ which means bad or expired beer. I predict they’ll hit it big in Bangkok soon. This band is a kind of time machine, a surf picture of past decades.”

2. Morg Recommended by: Charlie de Nipanan, DCNXTR About them: We first wrote about the duo of Pruet Chesadaphun and Panlop Maneekunti when their dreamy single “Air Shower” appeared on Comet Records’ first compilation back in 2013. Now that the label has put out a second compilation, the synth-oriented band is back with a much darker single “Breath.” What’s more, they’ve got more gigs and a much-anticipated full album set to launch this year. Charlie says: “We've never really had a good chillwave band in Bangkok. But Morg is legit—it’s just too bad most people don’t know them… yet. I think the fact that they will be more active this year will see their popularity really grow. They have very nice melodies. I like the way they sculpt their sound; they’re not a sloppy band who just follow the trends.” Catch them at: Noise Market (Nov 21-22) and Stone Free Music Festival (Dec 11-13). soundcloud.com/morgbkk

3. Mattnimare Recommended by: Beady Williams, founder of Mind the Gap concert promoter About them: This rock band—comprising Wan Asvaraksha (vocals/ guitar), Zung Chatkawmanee (guitar), Ap Taowti (bass) and Baboon Weerawong (drum)—formed back when they were in Mahidol University’s College of Music. We tipped them for stardom when they first popped up in 2013. And then everything went quiet. Now, the band has announced its signing to new label Tigger Music with a more mature (yet still rocking) single “Coming of Age.” A full album is expected by next February. Beady says: “I first came across Mattnimare a few years ago at the Robin Hood pub on Sukhumvit. Despite the setting, it was obvious that this was a band with big potential. Too many indie bands shuffle on stage like roadies but these guys had a confident swagger backed up by a very slick set. They disappeared from the live scene for a while after last year's debut single ‘22’ but news of their upcoming album and the release of their latest single, ‘Coming of Age’ explains their absence. Some people have been comparing them to Slot Machine. Musically, I don’t hear it but having seen Slot Machine in a small pub before they went stratospheric, I understand the comparison.” Catch them next at: My Hero # 2, Nov 7, at Rockademy. www.fb.com/mattnimare

W Map

Tug Suk

4. W Map Recommended by: Tippamet “Toey” Kaosaiyanon, owner of 1979 Vinyl and Unknown Pleasure record store and live music venue About them: This four-piece band is the new project of Nod Aranyanark (guitar, piano and synth), who previously in So::On Dry Flower's Lor Song, Jarupot Jaruwattanasakul (drum), Napat Malai (bass and synth) and Chittapon Wongviriyasit (guitar and synth). They have just released their first single “Black Rainbow,” a dark and glitchy piece of ambient post-rock. They’ve also performed at venues like Moose (opening act for Goose) and Brownstone. Toey says: “Even though W Map categorize themselves as a post-rock band, it’s the way they integrate ambient and trip-hop sounds into their instrumental songs that really makes them interesting. They don’t follow the trends; they’ve forged their own sound that's somehow optimistic and not too dark. They should make a very interesting impression on the indie music scene this year.” Catch them at: Oct 29 at Moose. www.fb.com/wmappage

5. Tug Suk Recommended by: Tokin Teekanun, founder of Stone Free Music Festival and The World May Never Know concert promoter, singer/guitarist in Triggs & The Longest Day About them: This mysterious duo perform a mix of scuzzy rock and lo-fi folk, and are known for their raucous live sets. Tokin says: “This band’s lo-fi sound reminds me of music at its purest, bursting with character. They’ve got a hint of surf rock, psychedelic folk and chillwave, plus old-school lyrics that are a bit cliche but somehow mix in perfectly. If you like late-1980s indie music such as Daniel Johnston or the Jesus and Mary Chain, you’ll probably be familiar with this sound. But not many people can replicate the style without seeming to try too hard. Live, they remind me of the Velvet Underground. I keep my fingers crossed when watching them because sometimes they randomly invite people to jam with them, even if they have only rehearsed with them once.” Catch them at: tugsuk.bandcamp.com

SUKHUMVIT ON THE UP What used to be a small hub of housing projects on Sukhumvit Soi 77 is quickly expanding. Set in one of Bangkok’s fastest growing residential areas, Sansiri Town Sukhumvit 77, also known as T77, is turning into a well-serviced, welcoming community that attracts stylish young professionals and families in the know. Here’s why. 1. It’s convenient T77 is a leafy, peaceful sanctuary, accessible through Sukhumvit sois 71 and 77, but it is still easily within reach of the bustling Thonglor and Ekkamai neighborhoods. There is a shuttle bus service connecting it with BTS On Nut, though the station is less than a 10-minute walk away. Access to the Ramindra-At Narong Expressway is also only a few minutes’ drive. 2. It comes with the heart of good living The exciting soon-to-open Habito Community Retail Mall serves as the leisure and entertainment hub for the residents of T77. Branded by Winkreative, the creative agency of Monocle-founder Tyler Brule, Habito will be fully operational by mid-2016, and will include highlights like Chef Man’s latest concept restaurant, Teien Sushi Bar (from Piman 49) and even RSM Muay Thai Academy for those looking to stay fit. With a strong emphasis on healthy-living, there’ll be plenty of lush green areas, epicurean choices of organic food and ethically produced products, on top of the basic services you need. 3. It’s a great community for everyone On top of convenient retail options, it's also the perfect location for all walks of life. Families looking for top schools are catered for by Bangkok Prep's soon-toopen Secondary School, while the new generation of entrepreneurs, freelancers, artists and designers will welcome HUBBA-TO Co-working Space & Artisan Hub

T77_4.indd 7

(open Feb 2016). This new space from the guys behind Ekkamai’s Hubba is one of the largest, most well-equipped in Southeast Asia, suitable for young professionals, entrepeneurs, arts and crafts appreciators, artists, or anyone looking for quality space. The whole package makes up what defines quality-living in a metropolitan city like Bangkok.

Habito

4. Bangkokians love outdoor markets And T77 does one of the best of the year, Winter Market Fest, which takes over the entirety of the iconic San Samran Bridge, connecting the two sides of the canal together. Launched back in 2013, the market has turned into a huge success, bringing together some of the trendiest Bangkok food and fashion stalls over a winter weekend in the month of December. The area is now poised to be the venue for exciting future events. 5. The residential options are awesome There are six projects in total: five condominiums and one townhouse development, totaling 5,000 residential units within T77 alone. And the latest condominium addition to the community is the highlight of it all. The Base Park West is conveniently situated right across from Habito and steps away from Bangkok Prep. It comes with the best view T77 has to offer, with rooms starting from B1.89 million.

cover story 6. Safe Planet Recommended by: Tanan "Boo" Boonyatanapiwat, Slur About them: This melodic-pop band is something of an underground super-group. It began with Thitipat "A" Arthachinda (guitar and vocals) and Aphiwich "Doi" Khamfoo (drums and percussion) quitting the band Shadow Flare, before recruiting Chayapan "Yii" Jantranuson on bass. Boo says: “Safe Planet are really spicing things up on the Bangkok music scene. I first met Doy when we were the backup band for Death of a Salesman, and I knew right away he had talent. Later, he sent me Safe Planet’s first single and I clicked share without a second thought. This is a pop band that’s not at all contrived, but full of melodic detail and nice arrangements. Compared to other pop bands, they’re not an easy listen, but they’re not too complicated, either.” Catch them at: www.fb.com/safeplanetband

7. The Black Codes Recommended by: Panlert Srisroi, founder of Indie 10's music blog About them: This is the latest project by Karnpaporn Boonput, who previously released bright and breezy folk songs under the name Snuffvideo. Now he’s traveling into twisted electronic territory with this ambient and experimental venture whose image owes something to the UK’s PC Music record label but whose sound Karpaporn dubs “whateverwave.” Panlert says: “I think The Black Codes’ sound is a reaction to the same old boring music played by so many bands in Thailand. The music has class and style, produced cognitively and full of intention. The concept of the songs, the name of the band and the artwork are all very unique. It’s good to see a Thai artist doing something as different as this.” Catch them at: www.fb.com/Theblackcodesband

Jelly Rocket

8. Jelly Rocket Recommended by: Natdaroon “Lady Soma” Panyawai, DJ/party organizer About them: This dreamy electronic pop trio—Pak Jutapak (keyboard), Pun Nonlapun (vocals) and Mo Chutichan (guitar)—burst onto the scene back in 2014 with their lovelorn single “How Long.” They have an album in the works, too. Lady Soma says: “It’s really hard to find a good all-female Thai band and even rarer to find one that plays electro-rock or dream-pop. I’m really impressed with their live performances. I haven’t really seen a good female guitarist here since the band Cuckoo [2009]—too bad she’s now in Germany. But Jelly Rocket is the real deal. I’m sure there’s a lot more to expect from them.” Catch them at: Cat Expo, Nov 14-15, at Wonder World Fun Park. www.fb.com/jellyrocket

9. Jinta Recommended by: Pakarn "Bai" Kiatpinyo, Manager Director of Sofar Sounds Bangkok, organizer of “guerilla” gigs around Bangkok About them: Led by Nuttee Witchukriengkai (guitar/vocal), this five-piece— Jeepy Amatyakul (guitar/harmonica), Teerawat Ukris (violin/guitar), Kiatudom Kiatsungssong (bass) and Sarit Kundawong (drums)—blends folk with a touch of post-rock. The results at times are hauntingly beautiful. The band have just taken up residency at Parking Toys’ Watt. Jinta

Bai says: "They're a folk band that gets the folk right—the complex trials and tribulations of life told through simple melodies. We just had Jinta at Sofar Sounds #4. The band did a tribute song to the singer of Assajan Jakgawan who recently passed away. By the end of the song, the audience was left in tears. Nuttee's voice resonates pain in the most soothing way. His lyrics carry the weight of the world, but the melodies are as light as the wind. Other band members also excel and you can hear hundreds of hours of practice in their performances." Catch them at: www.fb.com/JINTAJINJIN

10. Aire Recommended by: Piyapong "Py" Muenprasertdee, Community Manager and Co-Founder of Fungjai music zine About them: This Thai-Japanese instrumental rock band—comprising Reo (guitar), Tatsu (guitar), Van (bass), Phil (keyboard) and Ginn (drums)— formed in 2012 and have since forged a reputation for their loud live performances. The Black Codes

Safe Planet

Py says: “If Fungjai were to pick only one, it'd have to be Aire, an instrumental rock band with dashes of post- and math-rock. Their shows are energetic, they don't say much—guess it's because they're instrumental?—and their odd time signatures just make it so much more fun to head-bob along.” Catch them at: Hedsod 3, venue TBA, Feb 13, 2016, www.fb.com/aire.bkk

11. Super Unknow Recommended by: Piyamas “Pym” Muenprasartdee, Yellow Fang About them: That name is no typo. This is the new band from Aimcharoen Rojthaworn, a familiar face from his country-folk projects Alone Tournament and Katuru. Now he’s back with a much heavier ‘70s psychedelic rock sound, joined by Tem Kantatree (bass), Nap Lertwattana (drums) and Desktop Error’s Bird Adisak as guest guitarist. Pym says: “They’re probably not the first Thai band to take psychedelic rock seriously, but they’re one of the very best at it. They have such a strong sense of style. While lots of international bands might have a similar approach, the sound is very new and exciting in Thailand. Their live shows are so impressive.” Aire

escapes ESCAPE ROUTES By Pinnyada Tanitnon and Bonnie Sananvatananont

HUA HIN

Dog Town Shiba Inu dogs are adorable Husky-like Japanese pooches and Hua Hin now has a cafe where you can hang with 12 of them. Inu Cafe (10/21 Soi Naeb Kehardt 8, Han Hin, 089-915-8242, www.fb.com/inucafehuahin) doesn’t stand out for its standard industrial decor (bare bricks, dangling light bulbs) or menu (burger with cheese-filled meat patty—yum). In fact, they stopped serving coffee because patrons were feeding the caffeinated drinks to the dogs. Instead, you’ll have to settle for smoothies and sodas like the Passiony (passion fruit and honey, B75) and the Suika (lemon soda with watermelon cubes, B75). The adorable Shiba Inu make it all worth it, though. Planning on bringing your own mutt? Call ahead as the Shibas can be naturally territorial.

KOH CHANG

Tie the Knot Tucked away on Koh Chang’s Kai Bae Beach, The White Knot (039510-771, www.thewhiteknot.com) is a new nautical-themed (think Connecticut, not Rayong) boutique resort with only six bungalows. It’s secluded, cozy and you’ll be treated like royalty given how small the place is. Their specialty is actually weddings and beachside events that see the entire resort get booked out, but there are plenty of weekends when it’s vacant. The bungalows all come with a king-size bed, and start from B2,250 inclusive of breakfast.

PATTAYA

Beach Bangers Chang Beer’s Warp Music Festival 2015 (Oct 24, 4pm-2am) might be the largest DJ event seen on a beach so close to Bangkok. Taking place on Pattaya’s Jomtien Beach, it’s headlined by Andrew Rayel, the Moldovan-born DJ ranked 24th in the world by DJ Magazine in 2014. Other DJs so far announced include Revealed Recordings’ Thomas Newson, Scandinavian duo T&R, Dutch duo Dubvision and San Francisco-based Max-Vangeli, along with a variety of supporting acts. For those who want to make a weekend of it, the event is also offering hotel packages at Saisawan Beach Resort (www.saisawanbeach.com) from B4,500-9,500. Event tickets B1,500 (regular) and B2,500 (VIP) at www.thaiticketmajor.com or 02-262-3838. warpmusicfestival.com.

VIETNAM

Free Loader Restored 1930s mansion-turned-art deco hotel La Residence Hue (www.la-residence-hue.com), overlooking the fabled Perfume River in central Vietnam, is a member of Accor’s MGallery collection of upscale hotels with unique character. As it turns 10, now is a good time to visit thanks to a host of offers. On top of 10-percent discounts on rooms, dining and spa treatments, there’s a chance to win two free nights per year for 10 years by hashtagging your best pictures of the hotel or Vietnam #laresidencehue10. Kick Assche The French luxury fashion house Christian Dior has been in Thailand for a decade, but the men’s collection, Dior Homme, has only ever been available at highend multi-label store Club 21—until now. The first dedicated Dior Homme store has now opened on Emporium’s M floor, letting guys stay up to date with head designer Kris Van Assche’s current fall/winter collection, Homme Fleur, which reinterprets traditional items like tuxedos with contemporary yet very wearable silhouettes. Bangkok’s latest mega-mall has opened in an unlikely part of town. CentralPlaza Westgate brings more than 500 shops and 200 restaurants to Nonthaburi, in anticipation of BTS Bang Yai opening in 2016. Among the shopping favorites are H&M, Uniqlo and Charles & Keith, while restaurants include Bonchon, Tudari and Yogurtland. Unlike other, more central shopping malls, it also offers free Wi-Fi throughout, and caters to families with a kids’ playground on the 3rd floor. Intersection between Kanchanapisek Rd. and Rattanathibet Rd., 020219-999

Opened on Sep 14, Zettino is a new men’s accessories shop located opposite La Monita restaurant in Mahatun Plaza. The brand first began last year as an online leatherware store offering affordable items like messenger bags (B5,900), cross body brief cases (B5,100) and passport wallets (B1,790), as well as non-leather items like money clips (B1,290). It has now also introduced its first women’s handbag (available in two colors, B4,900). Online shopping is still available at www. zettino.com. Mahatun Plaza, 888 Phloen Chit Rd., 02-9505564. It’s official. Laptops are dead. They killed PCs off, and now it’s their turn. While Microsoft’s Surface has been trying to get us to work on a tablet since 2012, we knew it would take Apple to finally convert us. It’s hard not to get excited about the iPad Pro’s gorgeous 12.9 screen, elegant keyboard cover and its ability to use a stylus, turning it into the ultimate toy for digital artists. While we’re pretty sure the iPhone 6s will hit shelves in Thailand around Oct 31, the iPad Pro is scheduled for release in the US some time in November, meaning December here. Priced from $799, it should cost roughly B30,000 in Thailand.

Backpacks have always been big business in both streetwear and preppy looks, but there are now more and more options that can be mixed with your smart-casual work outfit. The key is matching your backpack with a jacket or suit, and completing the look with sneakers, not leather loafers.

While backpacks are stealing the limelight at the moment, Louise Vuitton’s spring/summer 2015 collection and Lemaire’s spring/summer 2016 range show that the crossbody bag is on the way in. So, grab one before everyone else does—just make sure your bag doesn’t droop past your hipline so it doesn’t look like a daggy satchel.

NEW BAR

A Perfect Teenhood The other Soi Nana, on the fringes of Chinatown, has been happening for some time, but this new opening might be the coolest of the lot. Teens of Thailand hides behind an ominous Indian-style door, behind which is a small, dimly-lit room like something Wong Kar Wai might conjure up. Much of the shop-house’s original architecture remains, with vintage Thai furniture scattered around the place, encouraging interaction moreso than sticking to your seat. The team behind Teens of Thailand features a who’s who of the local art and nightlife scene, including the co-founder of Ari drinking gem Barka and mixologist Niks Anuman-Rajadhon (owner of Drink Academy), with a little help from Note Dudesweet, veteran photographer Kachain Wonglamthong, and the late Sqweez Animal guitarist Singha Musikapong. Expect to see Kachain’s racy photographs hanging from the bare cement walls, as well as exhibitions and upcoming events from Note—plus, of course, a well-curated playlist. The real highlight lies behind the bar, where Niks stocks his vast collection of gin, from Hendrick’s and Tanqueray to Ashley Sutton’s Iron Balls and the must-try Hanami gin (the house pour). Niks changes his drink list every day (check the board). On our last visit, he mixed us a Ramos Gin Fizz, a smoothie-like mix of rose water, citrus cream and egg white shaken till very foamy and topped with soda (B350). The Mr. Cop-Peler (B320) offers a bitter combination of gin, sherry, fresh orange and Campari. Singha is also available in small bottles (B150). 76 Charoenkrung Rd., 081-443-3784

A few years back, there was a point when the Plaza Athenee Bangkok, A Royal Meridien Hotel (yes, that’s its full name) had one of the top three brunches in town, right up there with Sukhothai and Four Seasons. We have a feeling those days might be back as the Rain Tree Cafe, which is where the brunch is held, has just reopened after a complete renovation. It’s now much more Thai, in a lavish Rama V-style that combines plenty of marble and hardwood. The Sunday brunch (noon-3:30pm) ticks all the right boxes: fine de claire, Belon and Irish oysters; live lobsters; Parma ham; Roquefort cheese and six cooking stations. Prices are net, from B2,800 (including water) to B3,800 (free-flow sparkling, wine and beer) and even B4,900 to upgrade that sparkling Chandon to Moet & Chandon Champagne. It also makes for a suitably plush high tea venue. Plaza Athenee Bangkok, A Royal Meridien Hotel, 61 Wireless Rd., 02-650-8800

La Monita’s next-door neighbor El Osito has had a revamp. Reopened as Osito, the new kitchen is helmed by German chef Daniel Bucher formerly at Le Meridien, who offers a more serious take on Spanish food, using as much local and organic produce as possible. Thankfully, the much-loved Reuben and pastrami sandwiches (both B320/150g, B460/250g) remain on the lunch and dinner menus, joined by Spanish staples like Iberico ham (starting at B550/40g), Iberico ham croquettes (B170), seafood paella (B760) and highlighted charcoal-smoked dishes like dryaged tomahawk steak (B3,000/1kg), clams (B180) and octopus (B460). Teaming up with La Monita, it has also launched the Latin Weekend Brunch from 10am-3pm every weekend, serving Mexican- and Spanish-inspired eggy dishes. This October, Blue Elephant Cooking School & Restaurant is marking World Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a Pink Ribbon menu of lunch and dinner dishes. The special menu will be prepared by Chef Nooror Somany Steppe’s younger family members, Sandra Steppe and Emma Steppe, using high-antioxidant herbs and organic ingredients with the aim of making every dish healthier. Highlights include foie gras with gac fruit and pomegranate salad, and clear soup with rambutan and soursop. Finish your meal with desserts like almond pudding with fruit salad and date flan. Prices start from B200. Part of the proceeds from the special menu will be donated to Thai women in need through the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer (QSCBC). 223 Sathorn Rd., 02-6739353. Girls Night Out Bangkok’s top spots to gather your girlfriends.

Muse and Roof Hideaway Who’s in: Mind is a party animal, but Best wants a quiet drink. To make things worse, Aum hates traffic and says she wants to stay in one spot all night. The solution: With its rooftop views of Thonglor, the charismatic open-air Roof Hideaway makes for a perfect place to soak up the night breeze. Along with your drinks, order some savory dishes from their expansive menu that fuses Western and Eastern flavors, like the highly recommended grass-fed tenderloin with truffle risotto. Afterwards you and your girls can dance off the calories at the downstairs Muse Nightclub. Drink this: Don’t be shy to order whisky on the rocks. But make sure you don’t miss the special promotion of two bottles of Chivas Regal Extra at B3,800 and get a voucher to use the service “U Drink I Drive” (valued at B1,500, limited availability and conditions apply), offering a ride to your home safely after your fun-filled night. 159/8 Thonglor Soi 10, 089-988-5995 and 087-888-5599. Who’s in: Tonight, the gang is in the mood for a bit of sophisitication and old-world charm. How about dinner and drinks? The solution: Set in a 100-year-old house painted bright pink, Namsaah just oozes nostalgia and charm jazzed up by a playful pop edge in the decor’s kitschy palette. The menu here was created by one of Thailand’s most globally recognized chefs, Ian Kittichai, and adds twists to Asian comfort food—with drinks specially designed to match. The creative appetizers include salmon tartare wonton tacos, while one highly recommended main is the Drunken Lobster, which comprises Canadian lobster on top of Thaistyle stir-fried noodles with green pepper corn, hot basil, chili and garlic. Drink this: They have some of the best cocktails in town. But come mealtime, to go with the spicy flavors, the restaurant serves Jacob’s Creek Lamoon (B210/glass and B1,100/bottle, promo price valid until Nov 15), designed to pair with fiery Thai dishes thanks to its fruity profile and silky tannins. 401 Silom Soi 7, 02-636-6622. Wine I Love You

Wine I Love You

Who’s in: Work is over and the girls figure that there’s no point in heading straight home this late in the week. Besides, it’s raining and traffic will be a nightmare. The solution: The city’s favorite wine bar chain has expanded its empire to the futurist Groove annex at CentralWorld. Amid the handsome bistro decor, it serves up a range of international comfort food, from pizza and pasta to cheese platters, to accompany the floor-to-ceiling selection of wines from all around the world. Drink this: For a refreshing fruity tipple, we recommend the Jacob’s Creek Sparkling Moscato Rose (B1,150), a bubbly whose light and refreshing taste of berry is balanced with a hint of pear. For an ideal combo, order it chilled along with a platter of brie cheese. G/F, Groove at CentralWorld, Ratchadamri Rd., 081-921-2016. Open daily 11am-midnight. BTS Siam/Chit Lom. Hashme Who’s in: Everyone is feeling a bit lazy and indecisive today. Where should we meet up? Is it drinks? Is it dessert? Is it too early for dinner and too late for lunch? The solution: Thonglor’s nightlife just keeps growing. Situated on Thonglor Soi 9, the new 9:53 Community Mall offers a list of restaurants and cafes where you could pretty much spend the whole day. Our pick for a classy night out, though, is Hashme European restaurant and bar, which has caused a stir on Instagram for its humungous waffle tower. But that’s far from all that the place has to offer. Come sundown, the bar takes its drink list very seriously. Our tip to complete the night out with the girls? Get a seat out on the balcony to enjoy the rooftop breeze. Drink this: The signature Extra Coffee Berry is a rich, aromatic coffee-based cocktail that mixes Chivas Regal Extra, syrup, and vanilla with strawberry to cut through the sweetness, topped with cocoa powder. File this under: missed opportunity. Set in what was once an old boathouse right by Phra Arthit Pier, Sheepshank’s themed decor of old pulleys, crates and buoys is topped only by the river views, which are particularly stunning come sundown. The menu, from Seven Spoons’ chef Somkiat “Joke” Pairojmahakij, promises so much, too. Like that Old Town favorite, the focus is said to be fresh, organic produce. The reality is pasta, seafood and meat dishes that read well on paper but in which the ingredients simply fail to shine. All the dishes we’ve tried here—and that’s quite a few—have been fundamentally unbalanced. The starter of grilled squid and chorizo skewers (B230) comes with a chipotle aioli that tastes dehydrated and earthy, plus squid so characterless you may as well be eating chorizo on a stick. The duck confit salad (B320) features dry, unseasoned duck that’s completely overpowered by the sweet-on-sweet combo of fresh peach and blueberry vinaigrette. Mains hint at some intriguing

This secret brunch spot in the heart of Siam Square is well worth the trek up three flights of stairs. Occupying one corner of a fashion boutique of the same name, the unfinished-looking space epitomizes minimal loft style, with seating for just 20 people on a motley collection of sofas draped in black dust covers and flea market dining chairs. English chef Davina Pickering helms the kitchen, and has been turning out a consistently reliable menu of pastas, salads and pancakes for about the past three years now. Though the one-page menu has much of the usual savory-meets- sweet comfort staples, the food here really is a cut above most brunch places in town. The berry cream cheese French

flavor combinations. The snapper with artichoke, raisins, olives and celery (B420), however, is overcooked, with any possible tanginess offered by the artichoke hearts again buried by onedimensional sweetness. Even though well cooked, the conchiglie pasta with handcaught crab and lobster oil (B320) has all the flavor profile of salt and pepper, and a few sad capers. Even when something goes right, as in the mountainous bruschetta with roasted capsicum, jamon and anchovies (B200), you’re left wondering how much better it could be if the kitchen had cut back on the oil or been less stingy on the anchovies. Our complaints aren’t limited to the food, though. Despite the spectacular setting, the ambiance is hardly what you’d hope for in a laid-back riverside restaurant. Our last visit saw the outside bar’s club-ready soundtrack of Justin Bieber and Maroon 5 turned to 11, waging war with the inside air-con room’s playlist of MOR ‘80s chartpop turned up even higher. The problem worsened when, in the midst of some pretty severe air circulation problems, staff took the much-delayed decision to open all the windows and doors without adjusting the sound levels. Positives? The drinks are decent, including the full range of Beervana imports, some well-executed if uninspired classic cocktails and a small wine list. As big fans of Seven Spoons, word that chef Joke will soon be taking a more hands-on approach, and introducing a lunch menu, has us cautiously optimistic Sheepshank can up its game, but for now we’re thoroughly under-whelmed.

toast (B370), for example, gets the flavors just right, with subtly sweet toast and a thin layer of clotted cream and mixed berry jam that balances out the saltiness of the accompanying Italian sausage, crispy bacon and parsley scrambled eggs. The maple nutmeg butter pancake (B350) is equally comforting, topped with a slice of pumpkin, Italian sausage, baked beans, a lava egg and a side of creamy pesto sauce. The warm milk-poached salmon fish cake (B450) is another star dish, packed with fresh fish and sitting on a delightful citrus quinoa tomato herb salad, topped with breaded onion rings and a well-matched horseradishand-caper mayonnaise. On the dessert side, the warm rum chocolate brownie and cream shot (B160) is a gooey, d a r k , c h o co l a t e - y h e a v e n , o n l y b et te re d by t h e i ce - co l d m e l te d bittersweet chocolate drink with chocolate ice cubes (B130). OPEN DOOR

Jones the Grocer Australia’s answer to Dean & Deluca opens at Emquartier The buzz: Jones the Grocer is an Australian grocery chain with four branches in its home country as well as outlets in New Zealand, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. In addition to offering gourmet grocery items, each venue also serves as a cafe/restaurant. The decor: Overall, the feeling is sharp and modern. The vast space is scattered with shelves filled with imported products like olive oil, balsamic vinegar, dried pasta, tea, jam and sauces. Much like Dean & Deluca Mahanakhon, there are high ceilings, loose table settings and plenty of natural light flooding in to make for a relaxing meal. The large food counter comprises a long bakery display on one side, a coffee counter in the middle and an open kitchen on the other side.

22

The food and drinks: This Bangkok branch seems to be less about the groceries and more focused on proper restaurant dining. On its two-sided paper menu you'll find all the comfort food staples like all-day breakfast items, salads, burgers, grilled meat, pasta, risotto and pizza. Highlights from abroad include the Jones burger (B495) made with an Australian wagyu beef patty, bacon, Swiss cheese, truffle mayonnaise, pickles, yellow mustard and caramelized onion, and the 120-day grain-fed Australian black Angus T-bone steak (B1,380). For something more refreshing and less fatty, try the Funky Beets salad (B265), in which poached beetroot is accompanied by whipped feta, white beans, hazelnut crumble and grape seed dressing. Among the range of cakes and tarts are some Australian classics like lamington (sponge cake coated with chocolate and desiccated coconut, B148) and sticky date pudding (B235) served lukewarm

with salted caramel sauce and vanilla bean ice cream. To drink, there are both coffee and wine from down under on offer. Espresso starts at B75 while a glass of Australian white wine starts at B320. Why you should care: While Jones the Grocer can’t quite compete with some of the other restaurant options in this food-heavy mall, it’s one of the few places to serve hard-to-find Australian desserts in Bangkok. Here, it's all about imported seafood, whether it's Maine lobster, Dungeness crab or New Zealand greenshell mussels, boiled up and served up on paper mats. Be prepared to get your hands dirty with the mixed seafood set (B399), which includes shrimp, octopus and mussels, with your choice of sauce: Louisiana, medley, lemon pepper, Indian and Thai seafood. The West Coast wings (B120) and Cajun fries (B85) make for mean appetizers, too.

Stranger Danger

The modern industrial-style Hello Strangers Cafe (61/45 Sukhumvit Soi 26, 090-994-8760) serves a variety of hot and cold drinks, plus sweets and pastries. Recommended items include the double-shot, cocoa-based Monkey Brain Latte

TABLE TALK

(B90) in a skull cup, the buttery strawberry or banana chocolate pancakes (B180), homemade carrot cake (B90) and soft chocolate cake (B90). The place even has a vinyl record corner.

The Big Mango

Food trucks keep coming thick and fast, the latest of which is the bright-sky-blue ManhattanMango (www.manhattanmango.com). Inspired by the city that never sleeps, the truck serves a variety of light snacks, mains, desserts and beverages. But what sets it apart is that almost every dish centers on one key ingredient: mango. Highlights include the spicy calamari mango salsa with fried flat bread (B120), sweetand-sour mango with soho chicken rice (B75) and spicy green mango salad with shrimp (B85). To drink, try the Skyscraper mango iced-tea (B65), with crispy mango bubble. Check their website for the next exact location. Theerada Moonsiri

On Saturday, Sep 26, at 1pm, The Thai Film Archive will be screening a documentary about the atrocities of German concentration camps titled German Concentration Camps Factual Survey. Led by producer Sidney Bernstein along with treatment adviser Alfred Hitchcock, the project began in 1945 with the aim of portraying rare footage shot by combat and newsreel cameramen. However, the project was officially abandoned until the UK’s Imperial War Museum decided to restore the footage 70 years later along with its script, rough cuts and shot list. Premiering globally at the Berlin Film Festival in 2014, the film is regarded to be an important look into the reality of life at war. There will also be a talk after the screening by Dr. Tul Israngura Na Ayudthya, a history lecturer from Chulalongkorn University, on the lessons that can be learned from the concentration camps. now DAY TRIP Rattanakosin For those who rarely take a trip to explore Bangkok’s Old Town, now is a good time to do so. This is the last week of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Museum Route campaign, which provides free shuttle buses between five different museums in one day. Here’s a quick guide on what else to see in the area.

MORNING

MIDDAY

Start the day at the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, overlooking the Giant Swing, where drivers can ditch their car and board a free shuttle van to tour the area at their own pace. If you haven’t eaten, treat yourself to an old-school Chinese-style breakfast and strong cup of coffee at Kopi Hya Tae Gee, established over 60 years ago. King Rajadhipok Museum will be the first stop, a museum dedicated to the lives of King Rama VII and Queen Rambhai Barni, the Parliament Permanent Exhibition, The Thai Cabinet Museum and the Royal Thai Orders and Decorations Museum.

Move on to Rattanakosin Exhibition Hall, an interactive museum that takes you through the story of the establishment of this old part of the city. As part of the tour, you’ll also get exclusive access to its True Coffee Shop on the fourth floor, which offers a beautiful view of the iconic Golden Mount (Wat Phukao Thong) and Loha Prasat, the latter of which was just renovated. The Ratchadamnoen Contemporary Art Center is right next door, too, if you want a quick browse through the romantic watercolor paintings of Z Watercolor Exhibition 2015, which closes on Sep 27. Tonchabab Record Store, a hidden gem for vinyl junkies, is right around the corner, but if you need to refuel, continue walking down Dinso Road for a late lunch break at Krua Apsorn, a local hit. Do try the coconut ice-cream.

AFTERNOON

EVENING

Just beyond Ratchadamnoen Road, The National Gallery is currently home to an exhibition sponsored by the Embassy of Israel. Writing with Light presents the work of Israeli photojournalist Ziv Koren, whose iconic photographs have been widely published in the international media. Other ongoing exhibitions include So Hope, a contemporary Thai and Islamic art exhibition by Keeta Isran and the annual Art Camp 2015, featuring over 400 pieces of work by National Artists, professors, independent artists and art students. To make an arty day out of it, The Art Centre at Silpakorn University is also showing an art exhibition inspired by the Japanese-Thai literature Behind the Painting.

You’ve got an excuse to check out the riverside Tha Maharaj Community Mall now that you’re in the area. You’ll find the usual offerings of Gram Cafe and The Creamery Boutique Ice-Cream, who have both opened branches here, as well as munchies at newbie joints Noanoa Cafe and Puff Stick. (In roughly two week's time, there’ll be a new branch of Peppina joining the mall too.) For something new, though, we suggest heading down Tha Tien for Err: Urban Rustic Thai, a recent opening by Bo & Dylan of the famed Bo.Lan. The crafted cocktails and the Thai retro gimmicks are adorable, but if you still fancy some riverside luxury at an affordable price, you can take the popular option and head for the rooftop of Sala Rattanakosin for the view of Wat Arun over the Chao Phraya River.

now FREEWILL ASTROLOGY by Rob Brezsny

FILM Opening

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): “I feel like a wet seed wild in the hot blind earth,” wrote author William Faulkner. Some astrologers would say that it’s unlikely a Libra would ever say such a thing—that it’s too primal a feeling for your refined, dignified tribe; too lush and unruly. But I disagree with that view. Faulkner himself was a Libra! And I am quite sure that you are now or will soon be like a wet seed in the hot blind earth—fierce to sprout and grow with almost feral abandon. PAWN SACRIFICE (USA)

GOOD KILL (USA)

Biography/Drama. American chess prodigy Bobby Fischer (Tobey McGuire) faces his toughest competition yet at the 1972 World Chess Championship. Sep 24

Drama/Thriller. An Air Force drone pilot (Ethan Hawke) under the command of the CIA begins to question the moralities of his job dropping bombs on Afghanistan from his post in Las Vegas. Sep 24 EVEREST (USA)

Adventure. Inspired by the true story of a group of hikers (Jake Gyllenhaal, John Hawkes, Jason Clarke) climbing Mount Everest when a deadly snowstorm strikes, forcing them on a desperate journey for survival. Sep 24 THE GREEN INFERNO (USA)

BEFORE I WAKE (USA)

Horror. A group of university students travel to the Amazon rainforest with a project to save a vanishing native tribe. Their good deed quickly turns into a nightmare when their plane crashes, leaving them abandoned in a part of the Peruvian jungle inhabited by cannibals. Sep 24

Thriller. A young couple adopts an orphaned boy, only to find that his nightmares physically manifest every night when he falls asleep and uncontrollably alter their realities. Sep 24

SPECIAL SCREENING Movies on Design

This year, Bangkok Design Festival is hosting five film screenings under the name “Movies on Design” at the BACC from Sep 25-Oct 4. These films revolve around concepts that make up the modern digital age from all perspectives. From documentaries featuring the founders of world-class startups to developers of your favorite video games, there’s plenty here that is bound to ignite inspiration for all designers out there. MICROTOPIA (52 MIN)

A documentary focusing on homes built in unorthodox spaces to expose what it’s truly like living “off the grid.” From tents hung on trees or houses made from garbage, this film aims to make you reconsider the stability and safety that some people associate with the concept of “home.” Sep 25, Sep 26, Oct 2 WHERE ARCHITECTS LIVE (78 MIN)

A look into the metropolitan homes of world-class architects including Shigeru Ban, Mario Bellini and David Chipperfield. The film travels between the world’s greatest cities, taking you from Tokyo to San Paolo to Paris, in order to experience how space and desigßn can come together to tell personal narratives. Sep 25, Sep 26, Oct 4

KOOLHAAS HOUSELIFE (58 MIN)

This heart-felt and funny documentary follows the daily life of Gaudalupe Acedo, the housekeeper of the Maison Bordeaux house that is known for its world class architecture. Experience her routine and chores, and hear her intimate stories to learn how one can truly bring a house to life. Sep 25, 26, Oct 4 THE STARTUP KIDS (55 MIN)

A collection of interviews with the founders of startups, including Vimeo, Dropbox and Soundcloud, about how these young entrepreneurs went from life in high school to managing some of the world’s most widely-used businesses. Sep 26, Oct 2, Oct 4. GAMER AGE (92 MIN)

This documentary dives deep into how the gaming industry has evolved into mainstream culture and our personal lives. Through interviews with the developers behind some of the world’s most popular games, learn about the history of gaming and what’s in store for the industry’s future.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You and I both know that you can heal the sick and raise the dead and turn water into wine—or at least perform the metaphorical equivalent of those magical acts. Especially when the pressure is on, you have the power to attract the help of mysterious forces and unexpected interventions. I love that about you! According to my analysis of upcoming cosmic trends, these skills will be in high demand during the coming weeks. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Some astrologers regard the planet Saturn as a sour tyrant that cramps our style and squelches our freedom. But here’s my hypothesis: Behind Saturn’s austere mask is a benevolent teacher and guide. She pressures us to focus and concentrate. It’s true that some people resist these cosmic nudges. They prefer to meander all over the place, trying out roles they’re not suited for and indulging in the perverse luxury of neglecting their deepest desires. For them Saturn seems like a dour taskmaster, spoiling their lazy fun. I trust that you Sagittarians will develop a dynamic relationship with Saturn as she cruises through your sign for the next 26 months. With her help, you can deepen your devotion to your life’s most crucial goals. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): The coming weeks will be a favorable time to break a spell you’ve been under, or shatter an illusion you have been caught up in, or burst free from a trance you have felt powerless to escape. If you are moved to seek help from a shaman, witch, or therapist, please do so. But I bet you could accomplish the feat all by yourself. Trust your hunches! Here’s one approach you could try: Tap into both your primal anger and your primal joy. In your mind’s eye, envision situations that tempt you to hate life and envision situations that inspire you love life. With this volatile blend as your fuel, you can explode the hold of the spell, illusion, or trance. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): “Go to the edge of the cliff and jump off. Build your wings on the way down.” So advised author Ray Bradbury. That strategy is too nerve-wracking for a cautious person like me. I prefer to meticulously build and thoroughly test my wings before trying a quantum leap. But I have observed that Aquarius is one of the three signs of the zodiac most likely to succeed with this approach. And according to my astrological calculations, the coming weeks will be a time when your talent for building robust wings in mid-air will be even more effective than usual. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): You are being tempted to make deeper commitments and to give more of yourself. Should you? Is it in your interests to mingle your destiny more thoroughly with the destinies of others? Will you benefit from trying to cultivate more engaged forms of intimacy? As is true for most big questions, there are no neat, simple answers. Here’s an inquiry that might bring clarity as you ponder the possibility of merging your fortunes more closely with allies or potential allies: Will deeper commitments with them inspire you to love yourself dearly, treat yourself with impeccable kindness, and be a superb ally to yourself?

ARIES (March 21-April 19): You are destined to become a master of fire. It’s your birthright to become skilled in the arts of kindling and warming and illuminating and energizing. Eventually you will develop a fine knack for knowing when it’s appropriate to turn the heat up high, and when it’s right to simmer with a slow, steady glow. You will have a special power to accomplish creative destruction and avoid harmful destruction. I’m pleased at the progress you are making toward these noble goals, but there’s room for improvement. During the next eight weeks, you can speed up your evolution. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Taurus-born physicist Wolfgang Pauli won a Nobel Prize for discovering “a new law of nature,” which the Nobel Committee named after him: the Pauli Principle. And yet when he was a younger man, he testified, “Physics is much too difficult for me and I wish I were a film comedian or something like!” I imagine you might now be feeling a comparable frustration about something for which you have substantial potential, Taurus. In the spirit of Pauli’s perseverance, I urge you to keep at it. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): In 1921, the French city of Biarritz hosted an international kissing contest. After evaluating the participants’ efforts, the panel of judges declared that Spanish kisses were “vampiric,” while those of Italians were “burning.” Whatever nationality you are, Gemini, I hope you will eschew those paradigms—and all other paradigms, as well. Now is an excellent time to experiment with and hone your own unique style of kissing. I’m tempted to suggest that you raise your levels of tenderness and wildness, but I’d rather you ignore all advice and trust your intuition. CANCER (June 21-July 22): The astrological omens suggest you could get caught up in dreaming about what might have been. You may even be tempted to wander through the labyrinth of your memories, hoping to steep yourself in old feelings that weren’t even good medicine for you when you first experienced them. But I hope you will override these inclinations, and instead act on the aphorism. Right now, the best reason to remember the old days is to rebel against them and prevent them from draining your energy. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): You may laugh more in the next 14 days than you have during any comparable 14-day period since you were five years old. At least I hope you will. It will be the best possible tonic for your physical and mental health. Even more than usual, laughter has the power to heal your wounds, alert you to secrets hiding in plain sight, and awaken your dormant potentials. A steady stream of antics and whimsies and amusing paradoxes is headed your way. Be alert for the opportunities. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You have entered a phase when economic mojo is easier to conjure than usual. Are you ready to engage in some practical measures to take advantage of the cosmic trend? And by that I don’t mean stealing strangers’ wallets or scanning the sidewalk for fallen money as you stroll. Get intensely serious about enhancing your financial fortunes. What are three specific ways you’re ignorant about handling money?
