Welcome Home We think 2015 is a watershed for design in Bangkok. You could say the past couple years were about playing catch up. “We can do black typography on glass, too! We’ve got dangling light bulbs and subway tiles!” Great, except this town’s interiors were starting to look more and more like eerily convincing copies of Brooklyn’s. Beneath it all, there’s a current of creativity that’s finally starting to bubble up from an ocean of roughly hewn wood. While we’re keeping an eye on international brands and trends, it’s refreshing to see so many talented Thai designers coming to the fore with solid designs of their own. We’ve gathered some of our favorites here. Grab a coffee, pull up a chair and make yourself at home.

ear Ram Intra Road km. 14, Baan Rim Suan Ram Intra is a new development of homes perfectly located right on the soon-to-open MRT Pink Line. With land plots starting at 75 sq. wah, each home comes with a full range of facilities, while a large green space sits at the center of the development.

Verawan “Pook” Athiphanumphai, the real estate development manager of Suanluang Home & Property Co., Ltd., explains that the main concept behind the project is warmth. Architecturally, each property has been designed for comfortable living and to be different from most housing estates. What’s most important, she says, is that every house must be energyefficient and well ventilated. As a result, Baan Rim Suan Ram Intra has received the award of Energy Efficient Housing Estate from the Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency. “To be an appealing choice for buyers, we build convenient, individual homes,” says Verawan. “Residents should have enough free space to plant trees or do other activities. To make each house as comfortable as possible, our design is open and spacious. Comfortable houses must also be well-ventilated and save energy. It all begins from the design—the building has crossventilation; doors and windows are placed opposite to each other so the air passes through them easily. Our chosen materials also have high thermal insulation properties.”

Shera Advertorial Granada_2015_3.indd 6 AvenueHomeDecor2015_NEW.indd 5

The European-style homes have a distinctive suburban ambience thanks to their colorful and accommodating architecture. The color of each roof has been toned down to harmonize with the rest of the building. That’s why Verawan chose Ha Huang Granada Cool Series, which efficiently reflects heat and features longer eaves to prevent sunlight reaching the building directly. “The roof’s color should be light,” she says. “Soft colors are better at reflecting the heat. We opt for Ha Huang Granada Cool Series because it has the ability to reflect heat. Also, thanks to the high-gable architectural structure, the heat from sunlight inside the building gradually ventilates outside, and doesn’t get trapped in the internal atmosphere. The drainage system is another strong point. Since our roofs are high and steep, we need water to drain quickly. Ha Huang Granada Cool Series has more pronounced curvature than average concrete roof tiles, resulting in more efficient water draining, which also reduces leaking problems.”

Verawan “Pook” Athiphanumphai Real estate development manager of Suanluang Home & Property Co., Ltd.

Green Houses Even in the tropics, industrial decor can get a bit dull, with all those bare bricks and lack of decorative elements. Indoor gardens are coming to the rescue, breathing some life back into functional spaces, and adding a connection to nature. To see it done right, check out Pure Luck, the shop-house kombucha brewery of Chatthip Phungtham, or Exhibition Designer Pantavit Lawaroungchok’s indoor green space.

HOTEL DE L' AMOUR

Architectural Design That Blends Elegance With Efficiency

T

o attract tourists to Buriram, the architecture and interior decoration of Hotel de L’amour has been carefully designed to represent a Thai-antique look inspired from Prasat Phanom Rung. Here, every step you take is intended to be magical, from the meticulously chosen materials to the outstanding level of service.

Saksit Rattayapichat The owner of Hotel de L'amour

Saksit Rattayapichat, the owner of Hotel de L’amour, has chosen to use the Shera Zedar Shake; substitute wood roof, which has a descending pattern that leads the eye from one building to another. Not only does the design unify every building in the hotel, but it also imitates the look of cedar wood, giving a natural touch to the property. In addition, it is easy to install with its interlock and sub-roof technology, perfect for establishments that don’t require regular upkeep, such as hotels that are open for guests at all times. “When we first chose Shera Zedar Shake, it was originally based on natural look both color and appearance,” says Saksit. “But after using it on one building, we were impressed. A lot of people complimented us, so we started to use it on all the other buildings. In terms of quality, it’s great. Personally, I think we made a good choice in using this product because we’re a long-term establishment and our hotel is one of the biggest in the province, so we really need to focus on quality.”

Thanks to both its architecture and the owner’s choice of materials, Hotel de L’amour has achieved a uniquely elegant look. Each hotel room is connected with a pathway surrounding the pool, which sits in the center of the hotel grounds. Additional facilities include a spa, gym and the Cafe de L’amour. “I came up with the hotel’s concept. I’m not an architect, but I’m a local who wants to give back to Buriram, so I built something that I’ve always dreamt of creating,” says Saksit. The owner chose to build the hotel under an aged cedar wood concept, not only because of the material’s high quality, but also its environmental sustainability. Shera Zedar Shake is available in a variety of colors, including Black Wenge, Brown Chestnut and Yellow Zente, all of which replicate the look and feel of natural cedar wood. Available in three widths, the tiles are designed to be durable and flexible, with long-lasting "color through" technology. Importantly, in the interests of guest safety, Shera Zedar Shake tiles are also non-flammable, non-corrosive and non-toxic.

Cool Hunting Nostalgia is still going strong— and so is the mid-century industrial look. As the trend ages, designers are trying to personalize it, whether it’s with an abundance of vegetation (see page 6) or touches of hunter’s lodge-evoking Americana. It can get a bit surreal, creepy or kitsch (stuffed Bambi in the living room, anyone?), but it’s never short on whimsy. Tree huggers will be somewhat comforted by taxidermists Nature Decoration’s claims that they only employ zoo animals that died of natural causes. 01

“I think people still love the industrial loft style and the trend is bound to stick around for a while, except people will seek out alternative materials for the floor and wall instead of just bare cement. Another thing that’s trending is keeping the room white and letting the furniture tell the story. People are focusing more on details that represent themselves—for me it’s stuffed animals—and painting a picture to show that.” — Kittipong “Tum” Paiboonsombut, owner of Blue Dye Cafe

01 TIMMER FURNITURE

03 EASE EMBROIDERY

07 SALT AND PEPPER

Run by the giant furniture importer Champaca Wood, which also collaborates with Studio 248 designer Purim Kraiya and Sukalaphan Suwansomboon, Timmer is a new brand specializing in small and mediumsized home decor made from oak, maple and teak. The design’s use of plain wood belies little design tweaks with an almost Art Deco quality. Cyclists should check out the Shift side table; a trolley-like low table that allows you to park your bike at one end. Capsule is a wall decor piece with storage room for books and hangers, while the Robin Hook is a single hanger that allows you to be creative with how you position it on the wall.

This is the second project from one half of up-and-coming design duo Flo Furniture (one of BK’s brands to watch in 2014). The label specializes in home decor that incorporate embroidery techniques. The Faii collection turns cotton-polyester fabric into hexagonal shapes in a variety of brown tones. Users can pick their favorite shade and mix the shapes any way they like to create objects like room dividers or unique wall decor. Prices start at B4,500 per sq meter.

You don’t have to be jealous of your pet anymore, since the furniture of Mha Dog and Living is now being designed for people too, under the new label Salt & Pepper, which launched at TIFF 2015. We like the Ocean collection wall mirrors and rounded tables featuring pretty, twisted steel and ethnic-inspired patterns. Also check out their wooden kitchen and tableware.

02, 06 M/O/M AND THXFUL FOR SMALL MERCIES Veteran designer and furniture maker Inthanu Faromkao has finally put his own brand together, M/O/M, for which he partnered up with two friends, Piti Kuptawatin and Adiwis Wittaya, to specialize in basic home furniture that can be used both outdoors and indoors. Their designs pretty much stick to the Scandinavian style, but also use a lot of bowed technique both with steel, like the Ging Kaew chair (bowed steel topped with woven faux rattan, B4,500) and bowed wood like the R&R stool (B3,800). Inthanu, alone, also introduced a second brand at the Baan Lae Suan Fair in July called Thxful for Small Mercies, which blends Thai wood carving and weaving techniques. Highlights include the beech-wood-carved pendant light (B1,650, there’s also option for walnut wood at the same price), woven tray (B1,150 for beechwood to B1,550 for walnut) and wooden box carved with a lotus pattern (B650-2,150). 04 EGG WHITE DESIGN STUDIO Founded in 2014 by designers Kittima “Joy” Chatchaleomwit and Sirinut “Pop” Keetanitinun, who comes from a family of carpenters, the studio extends its reach into both the wholesale market for high-end wooden furniture as well as a more design-savvy market for minimal-yet-functional pieces. The para-wood furniture ranges from the Matchbox working desk (B9,300) and Perd cabinet (B6,200) to smaller pieces like the Curve wall decor (B120/piece) and Eggstand (B150).

08 MHA DOG AND LIVING Small, functional furniture for your pooch, founded by designers Pipidh “Oak” Khowsuwan and Anchana “Nek” Thongpaitoon. The luxury pet accessories brand focuses on items that are not only practical, but also decorative, like Play Tent (B6,500) and Wooden Bed (B5,500), doggie rest spots with a kind of Wes Anderson bohemian camping vibe—perfect for open-plan, loftstyle spaces. 05 FIOBULA Debuted at TIFF earlier in March, this brand specializes in minimal wooden and cushion furniture with Scandinavian touches. A collaboration between the decade-old ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) furniture exporters and the young Dots Design Studio, the Macaron collection (ashwood with green and red cushion, B3,300/stool, B4,200/bar-stool and B7,400/bench), was quickly featured in Wallpaper* magazine, while the Whipcream Sofa (oakwood with duck feather cushion, B16,900 for one seat and B28,900 for two seats) won the Design Excellence Award 2015.
