The space often hosts workshops and events on weekends as well.

Serving vegan food since 2011, this quiet corner on busy Ratchadaphisek Road has long been a favorite spot among the city’s health-focused crowd. It specializes in regional dishes, like plant-based panang curry, som tam platters with crunchy tofu sticks, and khao soi with tofu and mushrooms. BEST IZAKAYA

Teppen 12/2 Sukhumvit Soi 61 063-205-1889, 02-714-1412. Open Mon-Fri 6pm-12pm; Sat 5pm-12pm; Sun 5pm-11pm Born in Tokyo in 2004, Teppen boasts two branches in Bangkok. The original Ekkamai

location is covered in wood furnishings, including a long bar where you can catch the occasional fire show as the chefs work. The robatayaki (charcoal barbecue) and karaage (deep-fried chicken) are excellent, but you can also find classic Japanese dishes like okonomiyaki (massive, bonito-covered pancakes) and sashimi sets, best rinsed down with ginger highballs and sake.

Okinawa Restaurant Kinjo

Daimasu

24/1 Sukhumvit soi 69, Prakhanong 02-711-0536. 10AM-12PM

9/3 Soi Anumarnrachathon, Surawong Rd. 02-634-1477. Open Mon-Sat 5.30pm-1am; Sun 5.30pm-12am

Phra Khanong’s humble home of Okinawan cuisine gets all the staples right, like stir-fried bitter melon with egg, pork ear with ponzu sauce, and grilled saba fish bento boxes, all washed down with the archipelago’s own, refreshing Orion beer. The vibe here is distinctly islandlaidback, too, with floor seating, walls plastered in beachy photos, and abundant tropical prints. It’s little wonder it’s a favorite among neighborhood residents.

8 • Best Eats

Tucked away off Surawong Road, this wood-clad cubby is redolent of grilled meats each night, as diners sit around tables, cooking cuts like marbled beef short rib, scallops, and premium kurobuta pork. Naturally, there are endless Asahi deals, highballs, shochu, and sake to wash it all down, plus fresh sides like pickled eggplant, cabbage in the house’s special sauce, and raw tuna with chopped wasabi.

Teriyaki Bar Kelly’s Sukhumvit Soi 51 02-662-5155. Open Mon-Sat 5.30pm-12am Some come to this retro izakaya named for actress Grace Kelly for the nabe (hot pot), teppanyaki, or crispy karaage (fried chicken). But everyone comes for the skewers: chicken skin, neck, and breast, pork belly and bacon-wrapped leek, all slathered in shio (salt) or teriyaki sauce. The drinks include cheap and colorful cocktails, a lengthy selection of sake, shochu and umeshu, and requisite Asahi draft beers.

Izakaya Tsudoi Thonglor Soi 3, 02-712-5209. Open daily 5pm-1am. Tucked away in Thonglor soi 3, Tsudoi hits all those homey Japanese izakaya feels with a wood-laden interior, red lanterns hanging outside, and posters on the walls advertising specials. One difference here, a lot of their ingredients are sourced locally, including fresh fish from the Gulf. Exclusively for Citi Credit Card members Get 5% discount on food only 01 Mar ’20 - 28 Feb ’21

Shinsaku Chongjaroen Tori Tama 18 Park Lane, Soi Sukhumvit 63 Road, Klong Tan Nuea 02-382-0141. Open Mon-Sat 5.30pm-11pm This Tokyo-born yakitori specialist prides itself on using virtually every part of the chicken—all sourced from Thailand—including delicacies like misaki (hen’s tail) and otafuku (the fatty meat that runs along the neck). Chef Toru Tanaka has become a cult figure, earning praise from all who sit at his blond-wood altar in Ekkamai. When you’re satisfied with skewers, drop by sister sake bar Orihara Shoten next door.

Suanplearn Market, Rama4 Rd., 065-826-6355. Open daily 11am-midnight. Not to be confused with the more club-like version at Groove, Shinsaku Chongjaroen at Rama4 has a more intimate music club feel (which does feel like more of an izakaya to us). Food is hearty and unpretentious, and the beverages are served in icecold frosted mugs. There is also a happy hour every day until 7pm. Come and Enjoy! Exclusively for Citi Credit Card members Get a complimentary beverage valued THB 990 when spending THB 5,000 or more /sales slip (limit 1 drink /person /card /table /sales slip) 01 Nov ’20 - 31 Jan ’21

Now, you can try its luscious chicken, beef, pork, prawn, or vegetable khao soi and gaeng hung lay (northern Thai pork belly curry) on the premises, amid its wooden tables and traditional Thai murals.

Eats Payao 23/15 Yenakart Soi 2 083-262-6142. Open Tue-Sun 11.40pm–3pm, 5.30pm–10.30pm. Owned by a Thai-Singaporean couple, this Sathorn spot—now in an expanded new space on Yen Akat Soi 2—serves a variety of regional dishes, although it’s best known for its piquant northern Thai dishes. Using ingredients predominantly grown on their farm in Payao, the husband-wife duo whips up khao soi, gaeng hung lay (pork belly curry), spicy sai oua (northern Thai sausage), and specialties like Hokkien mee.

Ginger Farm Kitchen, 101 The Third Place, Megabangna, Open daily 10am-10pm. Other branch: ONE NIMMAN, Nimmanhaemin Rd., 052-080-928. If you are a fan of locally sourced ingredients and supporting small-time farmers (and you should) you’ll fit right in here. BEST SOUTHERN

Khua Kling Pak Sod 98/1 Thonglor Soi 5 086-053-7779. Open daily 9am-9pm. The southern restaurant by which all other southern restaurants in Bangkok are measured. The list of must-orders ranges from the fiery, in dishes like the namesake khua kling with minced pork and yellow curry with seabass and young coconut, to the fragrant—stink beans with shrimp, pork stir-fried with shrimp paste, and braised pork belly in a Chinese five spice stew. Exclusively for Citi Credit Card members Get a complimentary pork or chicken khuakling valued THB 180 when spending THB 2,000 or more /sales slip (limit 1 dish /card /table/sales slip) 01 Oct ‘20 - 30 Jun ‘21

59 Sukhumvit Soi 8 02-253-5556, 091-878-9959. Open daily 10.30am-10.30pm

This family-run restaurant may have propelled Supaksorn “Ice” Jongsiri into the limelight, but this treasured institution eschews stardom. Here, you’ll find fiery spices and herb-inflected flavors across “grandpa’s” khao yum (southern rice salad) and “grandma’s” khanom jeen. Fresh fish and plump crab might be the main draw, but don’t miss the wonderfully sinful desserts, either.

The Phuket import boasts a refined ambience, but its southern Thai fare is as uncompromising as it comes. Think khua kling that grows with a slow burn, plump prawns covered in tamarind sauce, and yellow curry packed with crab meat. The SinoPortuguese interiors, meanwhile, bring a regal air. G/F, I’m Park, Chula Soi 9, 063-465-6565. Open daily 11am-10pm. Other branch: Mega Bangna 061-956-5656

With a name like this, you know what you’re in for: southern Thai dishes that reflect Phuket’s rich heritage. Think nam prik goong sieb (shrimp paste with sun dried shrimp), Hokkien-style mee noodles, kai thod kamin (fried chicken with turmeric), and the ever-present stink beans with shrimp. The colorful shophouse recalls the colonial town’s charming architecture, too.

Koh Samui’s two-decade-old Southern dining institution, Khao Hom arrived in Sam Yan in 2017 and hasn’t looked back. Here, you can expect the same tried and trusted family recipes as well as produce like kapi (shrimp paste) and curry paste flown in straight from the island. Inside you’ll find colorful batik-patterned pillows, woven baskets and vintage enamel plates. Exclusively for Citi credit card members Get 10% discount on food only 01 Oct ’20 - 31 Dec ’21

Janhom 273/4 Soi Ramkhamhaeng 21 Phlabphla 02-319-1128. Open Tue-Sun 10.30am-9pm Despite its suburban location, this southern Thai specialist still packs in crowds, all streaming in to try Surat Thani native Poonsri “Auntie Baew” Sarikarn’s fresh dishes. Auntie Baew refuses to season her dishes with sugar to accommodate us wimpy Bangkokians. Order her gaeng luang with crab priced by weight, but make sure you have plenty of rice, because this soup is a delicious assault on the palate.

Plu 3 Suanphlu Rd., 084-638-8888. Open daily 11am-2:30pm, 5pm-10pm. Busy, tropical wallpaper, a striking bright orange sofa and Art Deco-style bronze light fixtures complete the look at Plu, Suan Plu’s cozy Thai dining spot. Here, you’ll find that classic Thai flavors rule in dishes like the 48-hour-braised pork belly and soft boiled egg with five-spiced soup and the fried smoked duck breast with chili and garlic. O.P. Garden 4, 6 Charoen Krung 36 Alley, Bang Rak 02-235-2238. Open daily 11am-10pm

Always fenced in by a long queue of Asian tourists and Chula students, the original branch of this rapidly expanding restaurant chain serves quality Isaan food in a casual setting. The menu covers various styles of somtam, as well as other Northeastern favorites like tom saep (spicy pork soup) and grilled pork neck. But the crowds mostly come for the fried chicken—beautifully marinated, with perfectly crispy skin.

It should come as no surprise that there are a mindboggling 29 different varieties of somtam on the menu here, considering the owners have boldly named their ten-branch restaurant after the dish. You’ll be hardpressed to pick your favorite—deep-fried, with plara, with young coconut shoot—because they’re all good. Whatever your pick, pair it with other Isaan favorites on the menu, from grilled fish to laab and namtok.

This garishly lit, supernaturally busy Isaan institution serves some of the best grilled chicken in the city, but there’s a whole lot more than gai yang going on here. The yam pla dook foo (crispy catfish salad), tom yum, and shrimp cakes are standouts on the well-worn menus.

After-work crowds pile into this unassuming ramen oasis down a seedy back soi in Silom. That should give you an idea of what this place is all about: every flavor and variation of the Japanese soul food you can find under the sun. But there’s a lot to love about dishes like the crunchy, tender tori karaage, too. You can cut through the fat with cherry-flavored, annin tofu soybean pudding.

falafel to the hearty hummus, tender shish taouk (marinated and grilled chicken), and satisfying Lebanese-style meat pies. It’s one of the handful of consistently great kebab options outside of Nana, too.

999 Sukhumvit Rd. 092 819 8131. Mon - Sun 11:30 am - 9:30 pm

The menu here features all the Lebanese classics, including kebab khashkhash, which combines tender skewers of charcoal-grilled lamb with a tasty tomato sauce; kibbeh, the torpedo-shaped national dish made of crispy wheat and filled with a fragrant meat filling; and incredible dips. If you’re angling for something traditional, try the kibbeh served in yogurt sauce with Lebanese rice.

This all-vegetarian venture puts a modern twist on Mediterranean cuisine. The signature chickpea dip is elevated with tons of toppings and styles. Try the Lucid Dreams, which features avocado, rocket, egg, kalamata olives, almonds, and balsamic over a bowl of creamy hummus. Or opt for a hearty breakfast dish like the shakshuka. Either way, scoop up all that deliciousness with an order of house-made pita.

BEST INDIAN

Dosa King 153/7 Sukhumvit Soi 11/1 080-545-1111. Daily 11am-10.45pm All vegetarian, unflashy, and unpretentious, this Southern Indian restaurant has earned a loyal following over nearly two decades in business. The

long menu is a repertory of vegetarian staples: light and fluffy idli (steamed rice cakes), crunchy-edged vada (Indian savory doughnuts made from black lentils), and crisp and addictive dosa—South Indian pancakes made with fermented rice and lentils, stuffed with various fillings.

Saravanaa Bhavan

2/F, Baan Silom, 663 Silom Soi 19 02-635-4556. Daily 8am-10:30pm

Don’t be put off by the deeply tinted windows. Silom’s home to southeastern Indian cuisine is a neighborhood favorite. Order the masala dosa and you’ll discover why. The rice crepe is huge, clearly cooked to order, and teeming with a delicious masala potato filling. Nearly every table can be found tucking into the dosa or vegetarian thali sets, but there’s also a concise menu of meat curries.

The self-described “world’s no. 1 Indian vegetarian restaurant chain” hails from Tamil Nadu in India’s South, but its massive menu spans the Subcontinent—you’ll even find Chinese Indian dishes here. Typically, though, expect the holy trinity of dosa (thin rice and lentil crepes with various fillings), idli (steamed lentil rice cakes), and vada (crispy lentil doughnuts).
