Best Eats is back.

You may not even remember, but there was this sort of pandemic last year? BK had to skip Best Eats 2022, but we return this year more optimistic than ever and with a reinvigorated dining landscape.

Bangkok looks and feels very different now. This year’s guide to the best comfort food in Bangkok reflects a renewed passion for easy eats and fun, inventive hangs as well as important mainstays of the city’s dining scene.

Whether you’re a vegan with a sweet tooth or are on the hunt for the best hummus in Bangkok, Best Eats 2023 is an important guide for your stomach (and your wallet) that puts the focus on food that’s easy to love.

You’ll find a lot of new picks this year for all-round cuisine like Indian and Northern Thai, but you’ll also get a good look into specific dishes from burgers and pizza to wings and ramen.

Plant-based food at this bright, double-decker bistro along Sukhumvit is top notch. The quinoa burger may be the most famous dish, but the big personal indulgence is the cauliflower tempura in hot sauce—that and the sweet, delectable smoothie bowls.

This two-floor vegan paradise is a popular name when thinking of going green in the city. Their vegan dumplings (with chili oil, gyoza sauce, sesame, and spring onion) and the taco-slash-sushi fusion Tokyo tacos steal the scene at Vistro.

Ari’s go-to upmarket somtam spot serves up Isaan classics and fresh seafood from Hua Hin. The owner, a native of the royal resort town and former partner at Somtum Der, brought her family recipes to Bangkok in the form of somtam with crab or spicy mango salad with fresh mantis shrimp.

CRYING TIGER: THAI GRILLED E-SARN AT NANGLINCHEE

Crying Tiger composes authentic street flavors with mall comfort. There’s a tum poo maa (blue crab somtam) that’s salty and biting, a cucumber tum pla raa, and other Isaan flavors you might be able to find on the street of a northeastern town.

JAE KOY RATCHATHEWI

But Jae Koi is a spot on which you can always rely. This semi-indoor baan-style joint—prepare to take the heat—also has the option of an air-con private room. A must-try is their hyped yum pla dook fu (deep fried minced codfish with green mango salad).

Somtam Khun Kan’s concise menu is small but mighty, each dish with spicy flavors. We recommend tum sua pu pla ra (somtam with rice noodles, fermented crab and fish), which is noticeably spicy but still mellow enough to encourage repeat spoonfuls.

For Isaan restaurants, there were few more hyped in 2022 than Zao. First opened in Ubon Ratchathani, serving real Isaan food—not dishes adapted to cater to Bangkok tastes—in a space that’s even more hip than your average cafe, while supporting local farmers in Isaan.

Laappaak Dining Room serves top-notch dishes at affordable prices within a cozy backyard-style atmosphere. MONTAGNE

Bangkok is in no danger of running out of ice cream parlors, but this one from chef Bhupar “Poon” Choonharas stands out. After winning Thailand’s first Sweet Chef competition in 2018, Poon trained in France under ice cream master Emmanuel Ryon. You’ll find a mix of both traditional and unusual flavors.

Brassica should definitely be on every donut lover's go-to list. They offer many flavors—from creme brulee and lemon curd to strawberry cheesecake. Originally opened in Nanglinchee, you can now find them in Ekkamai with One Ounce for Onion.

How often do you come across a cafe that is Russian and Eastern European-focused? At this Russian bakery, you’ll get all the familiar bites like medovik, pavlova, anthill, or even prague cake in a homey cafe atmosphere.

Foodies looking for a quick adventure should visit this modest, multi-floor izakaya shophouse dedicated to Okinawan cuisine. Beyond the recognizable gyoza and takowasabi, expect dishes brimming with textures of tofu, fermented fish and spam (yes, real spam) washed down with Asahi.

TERIYAKI BAR KELLY'S

Named after Grace Kelly, this izakaya institution provides a wide range of classic comfort dishes including nabe (hot pot), teppanyaki, takoyaki balls, wings, noodles, and beyond. The must-try delicacy is the teriyaki skewers, and the beverage list is diverse, featuring budget-friendly, vibrant cocktails.

OBANZAI KITARU

In case you want to find a nice, humble spot to drink solo after work, head to this Phrom Phong izakaya-slash-oden specialist to get your belly warm and fuzzy inside. Like its name suggests, here, you have a nice obaasan (aunty) cooking for you. Be sure to order their hamburg to pair it with a variety of Japanese draft beer.

THE OLD ENGLISH

Our personal favorite spot to dip out for lunchtime bangers and mashed (and some beers we shouldn’t be drinking in the middle of the work day). Its new digs just outside BTS Thong Lo are definitely smaller than its previous perch near Thonglor Soi 5, but it still gets packed each night with the neighborhood’s afterwork crowd who come for the extremely competitive happy hour special and generous portions of greasy food.

This Thonglor Mexican institution still has a breezy charm thanks to it’s shipping container-turned kitchen tucked away in a residential alley away from the main drag. The focus here is on the Yucatan cuisine and spice palate—going so far as to call themselves food “extremists” who would never put anything inauthentic on the plate. The 17-strong taco menu includes everything from basic al pastor tacos to lamb barbacoa.

CHARLIE BROWN’S

One of Bangkok’s oldest Mexican restaurants (opening in 1992), Charlie Brown’s offers some of the best bang-for-your-buck tacos in town. Slow-cooked Australian beef tacos start at just B110, nearly a third of the price you’ll find at other places, and even fancier options like baja fish tacos barely scratch the B130 mark. Taco prices can get out of control in this city, so it’s nice to see some sanity here.

CHOLOS

Started by chefs who cut their teeth in the kitchens of Gaggan and Gaa, Cholos started as a simple taco truck on Sukhumvit Soi 12 (you can still find it around there) but has grown to include branches in Thonglor and even Phuket. Here, things move away from Mexico a bit, favoring LA-style tacos and food. While the options are limited to just four (beef, chicken, fish, mushroom), at B180/2 pieces it’s a great deal.

It’s rare that a pizzeria gets as much hype as Sparrow has seen this year—the last time that happened would have been Pizza Massilia nearly a decade ago. The talking points here start with the 48-hours house fermented sourdoughs that set the stage for a host of exotic and traditional Italian ingredients. Amazingly, the chef churns out all these pizzas with just two mini ovens that fit only one pizza each.

Ciao Pizza cooks its thin-crust pizzas in a hybrid woodfired oven that sits right by the front window. The 48hour pizza dough yields a light and crispy crust, with options for toppings such as diavola, affettati misti (mixed cold cuts), and Napoli (anchovies & mozzarella). Also not to be missed are the rich truffle ravioli, grilled Australian wagyu beef striploin, seafood linguine, and Valrhona chocolate fondant with homemade ice cream.

It’s hard to miss this Vietnamese restaurant in The Commons Thonglor thanks to the walls covered with stickers atop a row of counter seating that lets you peer directly into the open kitchen. The banh mi sandwiches, which are the restaurant’s main claim to fame, take an American twist with warm, stir-fried fillings instead of the usual cold cuts. The portions here, whether it be pho or noodle bowls, are extremely generous.

EASTBOUND BUN ME AND MORE

This tiny weeny sandwich shop in Phra Khanong puts most of its kitchen energy into one thing: banh mi (and spring rolls or the occasional rice bowl). There’s a wide range of meats and fillings, including unconventional options like pork char siu and lemongrass chicken, that you can shove in between the crispy-soft, fresh-made baguettes. There is something to be said for single-dish specialists, and if you like banh mi, this is your spot.

SAIGON RECIPE

You will feel like you just strolled into a shop in Hoi An here. Lanterns, communist propaganda, wooden cabinets, and breezy blue and red drapes wave in the wind—all supplied by the JapaneseVietnamese couple who owns the place. Here, the focus is on southern and central dishes. You won’t find banh mi here and that’s ok—go for the banh xeo tom thịt (a crispy rice crepe packed with shrimp, minced pork and bean sprouts).

THUYEN

Thuyen breaks the mold for Vietnamese restaurants abroad, foregoing both propaganda art and Indochine cliches in favor of a slick townhouse vibe. They will deviate from traditional flavors and preparations here a bit—rolling your nem noung for you, strange sauce pairings, etc.—but do a great job nailing the classics like beef pho and rice flower pancakes. Grab a banana fritter to wrap up your meal.

HANOI HOUSE

You won’t find any fusion flavors here, just simple and wholesome Vietnamese staples. On first visit, try the eight-hour-stewed beef pho—light and fragrant—or the nam nueng (large marinated grilled pork dumplings), which are deliciously salty and juicy. Even though you hear about it less often, the Vietnamese fried rice here is a must-try thanks to its deep flavor and hints of curry.

Breakfast is the game at this vibey all-day dining joint atop the same building as craft beer specialist Hair of the Dog (they’ve also expanded to locations in Asoke, Ploenchit, and the Mercure Hotel). This is mostly American-style breakfast, so expect plenty of huge pancakes with heaping dollops of butter, thick slices of French toast, and wraps jammed to the gills with eggs and sausage.

BREAKFAST STORY CHU

Chu used to be one of the few places in Bangkok to get a proper Western-style brunch, but these days the competition is fierce. To its credit, Chu has upped its game in the face of this challenge. Sloane’s maple sausages and Bartel’s sourdough bread showcase a commitment to quality suppliers in dishes like the big breakfast, while items like its Greek yogurt bowl prove it’s not all fat and carbs here. You’ll still find this place packed during peak brunch hours.

We’ve done American and English, how about some French-style morning grub? The full breakfast opts for baked chickpeas instead of potato hash. You get the idea.

Despite the Japanese food and decor, this is actually an import from Brooklyn, New York.
